What have you heard from the president and from joe mansion and others. That gives you some sense that this might end the right way. But i'm concerned that we have not put the same level of priority ramp The rights of citizens to fully engage in our electric. This is not about partisanship. This is about supporting it. This is really the the. These numbers are extraordinary. But but the actual details of what's in this legislation include things that people have fought made sense for decades literally decades but never saw the opportunity. But here here. We are on the on the democrats only bill tonight Budget committee unanimous agreement. That means it's gonna make it out of the budget committee. Mark warner represents what you would probably consider the mansion wing of the budget committee bernie. Sanders represents The other side of the democratic party a they're all in agreement so lawrence on a scale of zero. Nothing's happening to one hundred. Joe biden is signing the legislation. Where does that put us on. The number line In terms of the end versus the beginning. But that this is what it's way up there of for this for this package of the bipartisan. Manchin are together on that bipartisan. Version of the bill They're very close together. I doubt that the budget committee would have ignored what joe mansion thinks in coming to this agreement but even if they did even if joe mansion as this proceeds wants to in some ways reduce the number. "To work. Texas governor Greg Abbott, responding last night to Texas House Democrats, leaving the special session and in many cases the state of Texas. Among those who went to Washington D. C Last night is House Democrat Penny. Morale is Shaw, who's on the line with us. So is Texas representative Garnet Coleman, who remains in the state but remains off of the House floor. I'm going to ask this of both of you. Let me start with representative Coleman. The governor characterizes this move as a refusal to show up for work and do what you were elected to do. Does he have a point? Balderdash? We are working. We're representing our constituents. Who believe in a free and accessible access to the ballot. And if this is how we can represent them. That's the best thing that we can do. It's not not working is actually working. To make sure that they represented in the most vigorous way that we can do it and this is what this is all about. You know, the governor is really funny. The agenda he laid out was an agenda to do, uh, Election reform of some sort That makes it harder for people to vote in. It could create intimidation in the ballot box. Uh and then the precinct and, uh, The lieutenant governor is doing trans kids in sports. Mean that's their agenda. I don't know why they're saying we're stopping our own because they put that agenda out. There is what they want to pass. Uh oh. I think it's better to go kill bills and then Think that everything is about passing a bill. I will point out that the items, the things that he said that you were keeping from occurring were not necessarily the items that he identified for the special session represented Morales Shaw. Those are issues that we vigorously vigorously push toward during regular session, and honestly, there was no reason why each of those measures could not have passed other than If the powers that be that hold the levers and that's the GOP, so they didn't pass those measures during regular session. Those were we were vigorously pushing for those. If you look at the legislative bills that were filed, you will find each of those and probably multiple versions of them and then to speak to the fact that we're not working. Um, if we're not working, I don't know what we're doing. This is this is more than work at sacrificial work. We're away from our families were away from our homes. We're away from our our own businesses. We are here to work for the people. This is this is no vacation. We're just not doing the work that he wants us to do. We are not bending to their will. We are bending to the will of our constituents and of the people of Texas, because let me tell you this bill. It's not going to affect one person, One party or another. It's going to affect everyone. It will affect seniors. It will affect young people. It will affect disabled people. It will affect all people of all creeds. So we are really working on behalf more than our constituents. But for the people were here today in Washington, not on cushy planes. They're regular chartered planes. Paid for by the House Democratic Caucus. Um, and in a regular old hotel. There's nothing, uh, exceptional or luxurious about either. Uh, and again, we're away from all of our own amenities. Some of us have health issues we're dealing with. And we have to make this sacrifice because, uh, every single law in this country and in our state is berthed at the ballot box. What does or doesn't happen there. "I'm Matt Harrold, Texas Democratic lawmakers arrived in Washington, D. C last night to break quorum of the state's special legislative session. They hope their absence will kill bills that they say what Restrict voting rights in the state. Stay tuned for Houston matters. Craig Cohen and his panel are standing by to discuss the bold move, which has drawn sharp criticism from governor Greg Abbott. Meanwhile, a former Houston police officer has been indicted for allegedly hitting a handcuffed suspect as Florian Martin reports. The incident drew outrage from civil rights advocates and is also subject of a federal lawsuit. Harris County grand jury indicted former HPD Officer Lucas Vieira for aggravated assault by a public servant. The first degree felony chief Trife Inner indefinitely suspended Vera in April days after Andre Howard filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against him alleging excessive force. Both the lawsuit and the criminal indictment accused the era of hitting Howard over the head with a pair of handcuffs while Howard was detained. And body camera video. Vieira can also be heard calling on another officer to shoot. Howard Howard's attorney, Randall Callanan, credits the D A. For the indictment. This is a new era with district Attorney Kim Ogg who is willing to prosecute cases of police misconduct. I believe that we can do this through this special session and again, remember, it's not that somebody's in Washington D. C is that they're not on the floor. I went through this In 2000 and three with several special sessions. So in lead that group with Diego and Jim Dunham and I can tell you these are stressful things, but I think that my colleagues did the right thing by going to Washington, D. C. She could wrap her mind around the fact that being in such a dangerous toxic environment an relationship could cause stress and maybe there was a chance for mental. Health may have taken a nosedive. She was entirely accepting of that in the beginning at this time there were a slew of things that camberley did not know but she would find out later plus when she got a good look at amanda body she would begin placing all of the pieces of this puzzle. Together it appeared that something more sinister transpired all the conversations she and amanda had about her leaving the death risk that brian made his violent tendencies. The control that he thrived from and how amanda was intending to lead plus the fact that she had a plan that was in motion an arrangement with her friend so shuki get out of the absolute hell that she was enduring. She even had two bags packed and one was already by the front door. There was no suicide note or message. There were no signs that would make anyone assume she was not in the right state of mind. Grinding and three other males were at her sister's bedside she had no idea who these other three men were. She told him to leave. The intensive care unit staff said. Brian claimed the bruise on amandus chest. Which was seen by the neighbors earlier that was from him performing cpr. He even told staff that amanda did not have any family later historian would change when he talked to amandus friend amber to justify the bruise on her chest. Brian said that amanda had fallen off a ladder. Trying to change a lightbulb. However we know that. Amanda toll mrs thompson before she died about the blunt force hits to the chance she said came from brian. At the time. Just tell the folks Who you are Your family, your background, your philosophy on government. How how government relates to we, the people. I appreciate that. So yes, arrived in the commercial real estate developer and broker I'm born and raised in Beaumont, Texas. Married to my wife, Kim for 12 years Now we've got we have four boys whom I love every ounce of my being there just there at the forefront of every decision that came and I make my wife a very successful attorney back home. Well, I plan to be a little bit different speakers than most. You know, I'll tell you my three priorities that I think I have a speaker in the speaker's office. But Focus on one is we have to get the economy back up and running. And let me tell you that this controller is going to give us a revenue estimate 10 A.m. today that will tell us what the budget looks like. And it's gonna It's gonna be a little grim. We're gonna have a whole lot less resources. Craft the state budget. Then we have thing we thought we would have had last in the last session. This is still the best state to do business in this is still the best state to live and raise your family. But We had the state coffers took a hit with covert, obviously, as as that every small business and large mrs alike, so we're gonna have less money to craft the budget. Yet 1000 people are still moving here a day coming from states with failed policy comes in Texas. You know they want that opportunity. They're not bringing that fall. They're not bringing public education teachers with him and not bring the DPS officers so that the core function of state government must go on. But it's really difficult with your resource is for every district. Every 10 years, we have to redraw political ons. They some population trends, and those numbers may or may not come during sessions. They may come too, some of which means we come back in and over time. But that the highly contentious issue also a constitutional requirement that we must fulfill. Doesn't my top three. Could you call me back and running crafted budget that is balancing respectful of what's going on at the kitchen table. And if redistricting after that, I want the member of the brain their priorities to the House floor, and I want them to work hard and I want to be respectful. I wanted to get their votes and past what they can pass. And so I put put the agenda back on them and say, Bring the which brings bring me your best bills and let's see what we get done. That being said. I don't see this as the next guy. I see. This is a great opportunity like he just said. I see this is a great opportunity for someone to step in and fill this Ford. There are entrepreneurs out there. There is a very smart individuals. If our that smart I wouldn't be talking to you e would be elected official. I'll be out making millions and billions of dollars off because I think there is a huge opportunity for somebody to step in and fill the void.
