"Michigan State is hosting the northwestern Wildcats in this one. And it's been pretty interesting because the landscape of football is used to be about how good you are. You know? Are you injured? Who you play when those normal sort of things Well, nothing is really normal right now, and we haven't played every game on the schedule. Once we got past week, one of the big 10 season And so Minnesota and Wisconsin canceled And what Dad did for the Badgers. They're done. They now you had to play six games that we were told the beginning and season to qualify for championship contention. This is the third cancelation. They're not going to get it done. No, they're not gonna make it now. And with the loss last week to Northwestern, that really hurts their chances to maybe backdoor playoff spot. And so it in the day what it does for Northwestern. If they're successful today, they win the West. And they're going to Indy, by the way, Speaking of Wisconsin, though, since that game's been canceled, and it's been deemed, obviously they're going to be ineligible for Big 10 Championship. We've started to see some of the Badgers. Leaf, one of their star cornerbacks, has said that he's going to declare for the NFL draft. He's just dropping out of the rest of the season because As I mean, it's kind of out there that there's nothing really to play for. At this point. You can't play for a championship game, so it'll be interesting to see how this continues to evolve. It's just getting crazier and it is getting crazy, But it's about to get crazy shoes dropping. Okay, well, we're looking at these college football playoffs and Maybe Notre Dame was exception for me. But Alabama one Notre Dame to Clemson three. Ohio State four. I mean, we could have probably guessed that before we play the game, but Northwestern is eighth. Yeah, they're in contention. So how state Well, who knows? Right. Indiana's 12 was constant 16th. I was 24th fairly good representation for the big 10. I think. But at the end of the day, um What's going to impact this think Lampson's had their problems with the cove. It we mentioned all have state And they've already had one game Cancel so they got be careful. That's true. So who knows? But that is that. And what can you do? What can you do? I mean, it is what it is. No, you have to play by the hand. You're dealt and covert is that Joker card. You just don't know. And I'm gonna, Yeah. Okay. I got to do this. I love Pat Fitzgerald, the coach in Northwestern. I just do Okay. In this 15 year go, CASS. He's in his 15th year. They're all time winning his coach. A couple years ago, he had took a northwestern. The championship game in the Big 10 gave a great Ohio State team. A heck of a football game. Last year was just a shipwreck. They want a Boeing winning three games. It was just a disaster. And they they've changed up into coordinators. I got a good quarterback. Their line plays been fabulous. So they really turn this sucker around to be 500 on the top ranked team coming in the East Lansing today. But he was talking about how we don't turn the ball over and how great we are, and I was so surprised to hear that because he's always called account of the way it is. There's nothing wrong with saying the team is struggling. All teams struggled somewhere along the way. Just coach if you're listening Cause you're already ready for the game. You don't have to do anything right now and turn. The turnover margin were last in the big 10 degree. Next the last Dalton and the country in the country Organ has the last dead last rank. They are minus 2.5 turnover margin per game. I mean, it just maybe just didn't watch film yet before that quote. I'm sure you didn't get that video. You know, rushing offenses last? I mean, But here's the other interesting thing, though We could say, Well, we don't run the ball. Well, they don't either. That's true. And their 13th and were 14. So that tells you they must throw the ball pretty well because when it comes to scoring offense or not too bad, so at the end of the day, they're putting points on the board. But they're not running the ball per se. They're scoring enough to win. Would that really is telling you their defense is carrying the day? Yeah, Defense is is a monster and Peyton Ramsey. The eye you graduate transfer. I know it's playing lights out. He's been great on offense, but you talk about that defense guys. Petty Fisher's back again from Northwestern team. It feels like it's been eight years. It has been eight years. You have to check his birth certificate, so they think about this. He's a junior, right? Yeah, well, he could be a junior again next year. Everyone that's true. I mean, if he says the Fitzgerald I want to come back. I want that Boehner. Sure you think that's gonna say no. So we're not He's gonna let him play. You know, Football's a great game, and it's got some wonderful people in it. And, uh, one of those people we believe his time, Alan Yeah. Tom, My own is the head football coach at Indiana and from his first day is being introduced as their head coach and the things he was saying. I remembered saying the guys in the office Indiana's found their guy now Terry Hoeppner was their guy and he passed away. But at the end of the day, this time Alan Guy Great High School coach in Indiana, and he's doing wonderful things with that program right now, and he's he's getting there. He's not there yet, but he's getting him there. He's right there, Leo Love each other. Yes, sir. Model, So get this, so they get they get down big don't have state and then they come back and they're right there at the end, but they don't quite get there. This is what he said to his team in the locker room. I want you listen to me carefully. Eyes on May we feel sorry for ourselves. We're quite that simple, You know, and I know it, but you can't quit. Get to class. You're fun. You've got character. That's up to you. It's a lot of fun will be played. Company for your city. Yes, sir. Each other too close. I've checked off by the result. I'll tell you guys You thought and you thought on your thought. Stay.

"Welcome to sports talk. Hey, Lance, How are you? I'm well, thanks for calling Good for my sports standpoint. That's addressed the Ohio State Indiana football game. This is that has finally some significant Yeah. Huge game. But Indiana guy and this just to be one of those magical years. Only because of the whole dynamic of household balls playing out that that I you may have an opportunity to upset them. Even it was at Ohio State. What do you think? Yeah. You know, I'm so happy for that program in that coach Because is it IU fan? You know this? There have been so many games over the years where it looked like they were going to pull off an upset on Lee to lose whether it was Bill Mallory or all the coaches over the years, But this year they have won those big games and man what? What? What a fun run. They're on right now. I'll tell you what. Vegas doesn't like their chances. There are 21 point underdog. I would not. I would not right off the Indiana Hoosiers that easily. That's a fun team. I took Indiana and the points that if you have to remember A few years ago, prior Terry Hoeppner dying. He had that program going in the right direction. Absolutely unfortunate was his passing. That was obviously the disruption Now the other my second thing you did you get a pacemaker or defibrillator. I got a pacemaker. Okay, Because I just had one of those done back in September. Somebody told me that my heart actually stopped and I didn't see the light at the end of the tunnel, which I guess is a good thing. Yes, I'm something so my friends that you see anybody that died that he knew. I said, I'm just glad to be back saying you exactly. Right. That's great. Well way. We're in the same club. Marie. Good. Hear from you. Call again sometime. Sure. Thank you. All right. That was fun. That was good. Heart. When we come back, we'll head down the stretch. I've been asked to do some to to kind of continue something that we did during the baseball season. It started last night, and I got a lot of people say, Well, why did you do that? Every night? I like Okay, I'm gonna do it because I found some like silly music to go with it, so we'll do it. Next. It's are now Carrier. Sports talk presented by Kelsey Chevrolet 700 WLW cap. "Has the better prospect in the better player I did have you on a team that won the state championship and I think I was the beneficiary of that as a result of just plain quarterback. You get to know him at all. I you know what we I I got the normal couple times we were at the Atlanta touchdown club banquets i. mean these exactly what everyone says. True first-class Guy, he's really close with Ted Wrath now is the head strength coach for the Eagles. The last couple of years, they were together Detroit. Everybody that's been around him. Just can't sandy thing but great stuff, and in the little bit of interaction that we did have as high school seniors He was exactly as advertised. Did you like all right? So you're really good high school player, you go to Miami of Ohio which I mean, it's not it's not like Ohio State Alabama, but it's a really good level of football and I think like when you got. There probably would have been right around when Ben was graduating right, so the the program had profile. You had some injury issues right in college. In kind of that derail things to some degree for you. It did. Yeah, you know because you go. You expect to go and and do a lot of good things in Miami just come off like you said it was Benn's last year. They finished tenth in the country. Terry Hoeppner was head coach Ashamed Montgomery. What's The oh? See and I really. Really, enjoyed, getting those guys, the recruiting process and you come in red shirted, but then you're you find a way where you're like the third or fourth receiver as a freshman as assault foreign. You expect that trajectory go upwards in my freshman. Year was returning to kick against Northern Illinois ended up breaking my ankle missing the rest of that season in the fifth week, the season or six game. I just had some issues with that. Where I was getting stress fractures, and really however you WanNa, look at it, I. I wasn't able to stay healthy enough to do the things that he expected to do, but I think some of those adversities, and some of those setbacks were really good for me to get a perspective because I had never really dealt with anything like that. Everything had always gone so well I. I think a lot of instances. Some of the disappointments that had that I had to go through through. My collegiate career has helped me be a little bit more resilient and coaching. Did you ever think about like what would have happened because that's a I mean it's a program. You can go to the NFL from that program. You know it's not unusual that guys get into a camp at the very least. A lot of guys get drafted, but there are a lot of guys in that program may make it into a camp, and that sort of thing. Did you ever think like I'm sure like to some degree? You thought about that like what might have happened if you hadn't gotten hurt. Yeah. I think so, but I also think that had it not happen. You know it would have not created the opportunity that I. I had with the bucks. When you look back on it, you really are such A. I I feel so fortunate because the timing. When we go through, and we talk about some of these things before we jumped on here I was really Kinda reflected back on how lucky I've been in you talk about right place at the right time. Those things have to align I'd get were targeting in things like that, but. To the fact that I have been a product of my grandpa establishing that family legacy, but then you know if if it's a year later and I, don't have that injury. Maybe I don't get a chance to get all at the bucks. His John's doing Monday night football. Them teams the head coach the following year, so there's a lot of things that I think you could look back on, but I wouldn't change it because I think the trajectory of all the things I've been so fortunate to have experienced up to. This point would probably be very different. Okay, so I've heard this story. The dinner I know how close like Oxford is to end, so it's pretty easy drive. Whose idea was that? was that just something you came up with on your own, or did somebody encourage you to do that? As far as which are going to indy in like you know like the whole idea of? Setting all that up and everything. Yeah, so so really what happened was it was an interview that that basically I was? I was talking to John and he was basically like right well. What do you want to do kind of like what we were talking about earlier? You want to get involved in football and. It so happened that Nate Hackett was leaving to go to the bills, and they were really looking for a quality control code, but Tim Bourbon it. Who is in Oakland with John? Now basically was so unbelievably efficient that he was able to do both roles, and they were looking just a fine him. Find an assistant for him that he could train. Uh so I went over there and met him at the Comrades Conrad like I, said I drove over there with one of my buddies. We stayed for the night, and then I got up the next morning and ended up you know, spend probably about an hour. So with him in his hotel talked a little football, and and really it was more of. Are you willing to come in work? Be Humbled. Do whatever you're asked I. Mean it was it was all encompassing to once you get more proficient than draw. Cards are breaking down, but he might be running errands for the coaches so wherever you can kind of create some value and have. A humble approach to just work hard and be loyal to the guys is exactly what that role entails is. Due. To leave there knowing you had the job pretty much I did. It was pretty surreal to know that. As soon as you graduate in the next month or so, and then I went right into after I graduated I came in the middle of as in that off season, with the box and it was man. It was amazing experience. It made me realize like when I look back on my mean, I did not know anything. You think you've got all the answers. Nothing and and what a great opportunity to be around. Somebody like John Know there was so many great coaches on that staff that really kind of put their arm around you and you are what the game of football is all about in in Kinda learn from a twenty two man perspective. was there someone on that staff that you worked? Really closely with I know sometimes like QC's will be kind of hooked up with a coordinator position coach, and though like look after a young guy like. was there somebody you were hooked up with on that staff? I mentioned Tim. Tim Burbenay Tio was great, and I'll tell you who immediately I mean. There were so many guys whether it's rich facade. Shia bill mirror I mean kiffin remorse. All those guys were so great me, but my interaction. I was really close where I can remember Greg. Olsen was awesome to me and I'll never forget the way treated me just for no reason other than he's just a great guy, and that always resonated with me, and it was a huge reason why when I was fortunate enough to get the job here. One of the first people you WANNA, be! Be Able to have as a partier staff if he wanted to be here with Greg, Olsen we only we lost him after eight year where he's the coordinator for the raiders now, but it. It just goes back to a pit him. Is You know when when you treat people?.

"And now move the sticks the ten takeaways podcast with Daniel Jeremiah Bucky Brooks and the pride of Indiana University though former holder for extra points and field goal attempts Louis Oh would you guys a lot of the arms there by the way it was a lot of that look at this look at the blatant pass interference Bernardi look we've Denardo in the background with no no no no Terry Hoeppner God rest him back there and that's let's see Billy Lynch part of the Lynch coaching family this is jumping up and down there too much information football program right now uh we didn't catch the ball what we're getting too and we didn't win this week either but we came really close yeah it's just like I did so thanks for that guy that was I like that because you guys down there you go buck Bucks GonNa join us in just a little bit here he's he's on his way in so we're going to knock out our takeaways here in just a minute but a couple of news items here off the opera as we wrap it up week four of the NFL season vodkas perfect he's done for the year of helmet-to-helmet hit I don't know if there's a less surprising story than than him in his way into trouble with the League for head to head that's no question John Jon Runyan handed that down and was is in in seeing that for sure and then we've got a couple of who might have as it's possible we might have eleven quarterbacks start in week five that did not start week one based on the injuries that we're seeing we had Josh Allen Mitch Trubisky depending on what happens with those two they did not finish week four dude jury so that's unfortunate saying insane man there's you know we'll get takeaways here in the second just real quick off the top one of the bigger overall takeaways man we've got so many team sitting at two and two in tweeted out the other night or after the games last night it feels like the end of the preseason does September kind of the new preseason everybody try and find their sea legs knock all Rostov and I feel like okay now the season starts there's three teams in the NFC that have a losing record just three of the sex scenes at a losing throw it all out the window and let's start fresh here we five what are you say there we go all right well we'll get a reaction from week four kickoff these takeaways I'll start off first one here the Patriots survive drawn harm.
"terry hoeppner" Discussed on Attack Each Day: The Harbaughs' Podcast
"Woody Hayes Bill arms Parker. George little. We've Eubank you mentioned sid Gillman air. He mentioned. Both course John Pont Carmen Khoza Bill Mallory should skip over for most of our listeners the name. Jim tressel Joe Novak Ron zook dick chrome. Paul diesel. Bill nar. Dizzy Randy Walker. John Harbaugh Nabi were Kelsey Gary Moeller, Larry Smith, dick Tomey, Terry Hoeppner, Sean McVay as the youngest of those guys. It isn't amazing list of guys that have come through. There should mention they have some pretty good basketball coach come through there too. So it's it's an amazing thing that history that pro quick aside that we've gone into here. That's an amazing coaches that have been at Miami. But the list that you read I mean outstanding but only nine of them correct tax with right because of the criteria that they set for it. So maybe Michigan used to set the criteria Heisman Trophy Super Bowl champion. You know? I don't know if you. Moshe's able. Yeah. The Super Bowl MVP would be the probably the best player criteria. Have you see for a coach here that wins a national championship that kind of thing if you're a coach that goes on like Tom Brady goes on Charles Woodson goes onto coaching, and they they both have sat us anyway. But a coach at a championship level that kind of thing you can have your own criteria that you could come up with this based on the things that we see here as far as the greatness of Michigan football, not everything happens at U of M other things happen when you go. Elsewhere and take Michigan with you to get back to what you're talking about little, Jack, so many athletes you've read later on that they do this and they do that. And you kinda like palm so disappointed in this guy. Or that guy? There are some on that list that doesn't happen. Tom Brady happens to be one of those guys. So not a bad role model for young kid like jacquard bought a C and have an have as a football guy to watch. And I think growing up all of his you because you love sport and continue to love sport. My growing up in a little town of crest line, Ohio. We we found those role models. I found them in the Cleveland Indians. I found him in the Cleveland Browns. Because those were the games that were on television. Those are the players that we got to know a little bit. And we and we kind of we wanna wear their number. We wanna we wanna walk like him. We want to set our our stance in in the in the batter's box says as our heroes did. But it's also important that they be role models and do things right. And and present that kind of image that we as parents want our children to be exposed to. And I just watched Jack Riley Corinne rally cream was the same. I watched it. We talked on the phone this week. I see so much in him that I that I see in Jack. And and that's what he was all about. So we need that in any way we can perpetuate that now Tom's playing. Now, we all know about him. But after retired five years ten years that image gets a little bit faded as as. Remember miss a player and how we remember as an individual. But we need to memorialize that in my judgment and other people said just sort of a statute of Brady just a statue of a goat with Thomson. So speaking of recognizing the great things that Michigan people have done our former Michigan football players have done. And this ties is something we talked about on the podcast. This is a really cool thing. Some business leaders in the state of Michigan, including Jarrett irons who played football here in the ninety s good friend of mine and Jarrett along with two other businessmen have put together the money to donate a copy of black and blue the story of Gerald Ford Willis ward in the nineteen thirty four Michigan. Georgia Tech football game to every public high school in the state of Michigan. They announce it over for MLK day, and how cool is that Jarrett and the other guys got together to make sure because I gave you a copy of documentary you, of course know, the.
"terry hoeppner" Discussed on The Assembly Call: IU Basketball Podcast and Postgame Show
"I still remember seeing the news tick across the TV screen that Alan Henderson injured his knee that was crushing to, however, although was then eleven twelve years old that was absolutely crushing. So that's certainly one. But then the other one would be Yogi making that three to be Iowa because the rollercoaster that team went on and then for that crew to come back and win the big ten and for it to be Yogi who we had seen go through all four years, and we just kind of felt like we had that special relationship with him as a player for him to be the one that made that shot. That was, I remember that show was an emotional one. I was emotional for doc, our friend yet Dukla be, yeah, so that on one on the bad side one on the good side. Obviously, there are many games that we've been emotionally angry and mad, but like I don't know all of the final Tom Crean sane. List of those shows that you want your answer. I don't know if we were so much emotional as just like bland. We were devoid of motion, actually kinda like. He goes, we'll talk about anything else. Time your dog died that feel better. Andy emotional moments. I would say somewhat tied to the Henderson injury, even though I think you could still like, you know, still, you can let yourself believe that good things happen that season. But I remember when Cheney like left the floor of the last time in the tournament, knowing that was over, wasn't emotional on the on the bad side which was tied to tied to yours. I mean, I was, I guess I was eight or nine years old. I mean, I remember the key smart shot. I remember jumping around and hugging, my dad and my mom and things like that. So I remember I remember that that would, I guess that would be one and then the comeback to Duke and in two thousand to you, you kinda put it potentially in the notes. That's one where I live. I been Cincinnati, not very long. It's a lot of Kentucky fans down here who obviously hate Duke. And and so I came into work the next day and people were like congratulating me as if I had won the game that they were just so happy that Duke it lost. It was kind of a weird. I was like, yeah, thanks pretty pretty tired from how hard I played in the game, Jared. Odal. Yeah, yeah. That was real real close striking. By the way, my dad just text me that he enjoyed the versus Purdue game that I was just talking about. So he's currently listening and I didn't know. Your emotional moment run. I think it was this is related to the shop, but Tom Crean speech after the, they won that game and clinched the title for the same reasons you put out is that team on a roller coaster. That speech is fantastic. I mean, rose. What you think about Tom cream now, obviously that is a beautiful speech and he you can tell when he was giving it, he was speaking as much to myself as he was the team. You know, for what everything they'd been through. I see. That's number one. And then a guess not an UB be one, but in Indiana one that that made me as a motion was when I found out that Terry Hoeppner had passed away those those are my two. I use sports moments that really got me emotionally and and to this damn I miss coach up every day. That guy was so great. I think you speak for all fans when you say that. No question about. All right. Coming up in our final segment, we will answer more of your questions as many as we have time for how did Andy and Ryan become Hoosier fans, and we get to hear Ryan's answer about how he would handle being placed in an awkward hypothetical situation with his coaching hero Mike shifts that and more coming up next stick with..
