"Rounds well this is the thing on that and I I've been thinking about that but I think your needs a long off into line and second error so great at this point show that you have the first and second round on those two and I I really do I think you made your draft a left tackle at you know with the twenty fifth yeah or any you know you have to fight them or cornerback but even wanna quarterback because if world you've gone and how did you keep the the roads are weighing but I think it's Wayne probably because Alexander probably gone wonderful three your call is there any cinar if if if Wayne's an both go elsewhere and then they go to roads and see renegotiate gonna help act why am I gonna do that I mean who E. start my cues in boys looking very yeah I mean you gonna you gonna try out Terence Newman again the whole meal came back we trust him you know no change and so that's I mean that's where we have some serious issues in the secondary that I still would because I trust them perfect and that more than I do the office like so that's why I don't think you guys as much as I would love to draft a quarterback this year and start grilling him I don't know that you can do it the first three rounds and it takes the other areas I am thoroughly enjoyed our conversations you add so much congrats on the twenty years old you don't ever wear a tie again and we'll go over it all the time yeah we'll go out now grab some beer soon thanks man appreciate gently on up to the absolute he is truly one of the best guys in this business does a damn good job and we're lucky to have chips Goggins off peak numbers for the Vikings by the way of forty one point six and a seventy nine share I support it that's why we talk about the Vikings are will finish was a political talk when we come.

"I think that's a little far fetched. I think what Mike Zimmer is going to be pissed off about, look as secondary play while Xavier Rhodes is not a good matchup for certain receivers, right? He has to win at the line of scrimmage. He's an early. He's what I call a breakfast corner. Breakfast corn is a cold presser at the line, right? But he's got a win early. He's not, you know, some corners are dinner corners. They win late in the route, right? The resources of the world, right? They can. They play off. They read the route their read the quarterback strop. They play off a breakfast corners, a guy that got a winner, and that's what that's really what roads has to do. He's got a win early, and I think he's pissed off at a secondary, but he's got to be pissed off his defense. Look, they miss they, they miss exurbia Griffin, and we hope he's ok. Everson Griffen. They miss him badly. He's got to get mentally healthy in that that hurts them because he was a good player for them. Hunters of good player. See when you have a combination of defensive linemen that are really good. Then somebody has a single block. But if you only have one or two, not every, you know it's hard to win. And I think that fronts not playing to the level they need him to play. Do you think there's going to be? They mentioned, McKinsey Alexandra guy. They got a Clemson and few years ago they, they mentioned him having some struggles. I mean, will we see a situation where Zimmer maybe make some changes? I mean, he might bring Terence Newman back on his coaching staff. I mean, ninety years old to me, Terence Newman played better than some of these guys are playing. I'm Ben Zimmer's like probably in the headset, say, interns you looking at Georgia. Okay. He's like, I'm gonna bring the whole pacman Jones will be out there in a couple of saying, hey, Terence Newman. You've played better. These guys just go halftime. Put somebody else's uniform and they won't know the fuck a difference. There's one bright spot though, and that's a former North Carolina guy. Mike us. He's he's a rookie. And I mean, I I just I thought it was wild. How after the game, everyone seemed to turn so sour on the Minnesota Vikings. I thought they did have some bright spots. The defense was what it was, but you're also playing the best team. This is the best show on turf two point zero at this point, if you're not if you're not going to if it's a seven on seven game and you're going to get pressure, the Rams are gonna kick your ass every time. I mean, nobody's going to beat the Rams if they don't get the Goff there's just no way you're going to do it. You just not going to be able to do it, but I'm trying my head to figure out which team that is in the NFC that has that passage. Obviously, the eagles for the team that had that last year in a team that really, but but they're not the same front that they were last year..

"Terence Newman was sort of forced into retirement and now he's on the Vikings assistant coaching staff this year. But they had so many communication breakdowns in the secondary. If you look at how tight ends of performed against the Vikings, there's been some ugly, big time plays with tight ends and running backs out of the backfield because they just don't between. I'm gonna go really meat and potatoes. Football on you here between linebackers and nickel cornerback. There have been some major. Communication gas that just didn't happen with parents. Newman was on the field. It was like having an assistant coach on the field. So I just don't think it's possible to stick the flag in the ground of number one defense in the NFL anymore with those two pieces missing. So the Rams already have the best offense in the league right now. And they're gonna say something far removed from the best defense in the NFL tomorrow night. The flip side of that though, we're talking with Phil Mackey ESPN twin cities is that the Vikings won't be facing. The best version of the Rams defense definitely going to be without cornerback. Keep to Leib could be without Marcus Peters. The other families to limited Mark limited the other ball hawking corner that they have. How do you expect the Vikings to react to that potential thing. The the problem is the Vikings are gonna listen to a negative. I am right now the Vikings we're gonna have to their their offense. Headline is so ravaged. I don't know if you can pick apart the ram secondary if you don't have time to throw. I mean, Kirk, even when Kirk cousins wasn't getting destroyed by bills pass rushers. He was Aaron on throws because it was obvious. He was waiting for somebody to knock his head off his shoulder pads. So I, I do think if the Vikings can get some quick hitting offense to Delvin cook, assuming he plays and their two star wide receiver Stefan digs. And Adam seal who really are legitimately two of the top ten or twelve wide receivers in the NFL they can run any route yards after the catch. They're very quick tough to tackle. I think that's the plan. If you, if you can't get quick hitting stuff to those three players, it's going to be really, really hard on the road short week, no offense of line. It's gonna be really hard to come away. With enough points to win the. I mean, you're, you're gonna have to score at least I would think twenty one or twenty four points to even be in the conversation. That's my guess. And it sounds to me in Phil, if if I understand you correctly that hypothetically, if you had the ability to start both digs and Alvin cook in your fantasy league that you probably wouldn't. Hypothetically, I, I would I if it's PT are starting all of those guys all the time. If you go Phelan's another one, if you go look, if you're gonna PR league feeling in a completely completely garbage game by the Vikings. Offense caught like fifteen passes for one hundred yards or something like that just with underneath stuff. So I'd start them on. I would start them all even if it's a blowout talking with Phil Mackey, ESPN twin cities, Donald show candidates. He brothers and a he. Brian came in at ski seems that the Minnesota Timberwolves will not be starting Jimmy Butler anytime soon. How professional sag there there wasn't. You can learn from how Andy doesn't don't don't care how good you are. You can always learn a tip or to how we operate it right there. Things get. So messy with this organization to where we are right now. How much time do you have? Oh, my gosh. I mean, this literally goes first of all, Gwen Taylor is the common denominator..

"All right well maybe they don't have a chance what everybody else is saying but terrorist before i let you go we have wade phillips on the podcast you're going to be on and wade phillips talked about you being one of the greatest defensive players he's ever coached and he's coached reggie white jj watt elvin buffet curly cup carl mecklenburg rickey jackson hole famers pro bowl players all pro selections what was your relationship like with wade and what did he mean to you man i loved weighed have the most effective way phillips and he he put a belief in guys that you can go out there and like pretty much be like superman i mean they gave us the feeling that hey if he asked us to do this we go out and do it and he was he was instrumental part of that couple of playoff things we had in dallas and obviously you've seen what you've done he's got a super bowl and bamber and he's in with the rams now and i think they're going to have a good team obviously he understands the game football is the best i mean going back those bomb rescue soul i mean it's a that's a football family and he really understands the game and he gets it to players and there's believing what he's doing and he believes in his players so that definitely helps you know i said to him turns that there may not be a coach in nfl history who is ever coached more defensive talent than wade phillips ever i mean he's he's definitely up there i i think there's the ryan brothers obviously because of that family there's family history i think codes zimmer for sure i mean that's three that i can name of what i mean i don't know you know history of you know all the coaches and the players they coach but those would be three that you know that i've worked under but i could say i'd bet that they've had some great talent in their careers terms congratulations on fifteen great years good luck on one final year if this doesn't turn out to be the last year and thank you very much for.

"You that right now they all they all think they all stink they all hurt just as much as the next one i'll tell you that for sure when does he stay with you more than the other so no i think probably clashes probably definitely supersede the others because of where we were and what we had at stake i'll tell you what though what's what's what's up now though because last year is over and done with we have to try to recreate that you know we're not giving anything and every year you gotta go out and work for it so we're talking about last year but at the same time it's over there's nothing we can do for about last year and there's nothing that's going to help with last year that moving forward so we we have to you know during these those putting a lot of work not just progressing you know get better day in and day out and once trying to can't come that's our that's our goal last year has done with an over another we can do about that so you talked about this year and obviously one of the biggest and most significant changes for the years the quarterback kirk cousins one of you seen out of him during the early parts of ota's i mean just is what i saw them when we played against them you know he's a very cerebral quarterback fiery guy he's got some we've got the mocking foam and you know he loves the game football so great teammate and you know looking forward to to seeing what he does want the regular people get you i know you're going ahead i'm gonna play back one more time just because he was the one organization they you spent the most amount of time with that i didn't ask you about but what would stand out to you about the nine seasons you did spend in dallas we had a season i think one thirteen danes there as well and had a first round bye it's with the giants won the super bowl i believe in arizona with the helmet catch david tyree helmet catch that was a memorable season because that was the first time i'd ever been to the second round of the playoffs and you know the first time for sure that ever had it i don't by and we had a a lot of great players you know being that we didn't make it to the to the big dance a lot of guys ended up going to hawaiian playing football so it was pretty cool to have that many players there to do that what would it mean to you this year if this vikings team finally could break through and get to the super bowl for you personally it would be awesome that would be the highlight of my career for sure and you know growing out i could do it you know undoubtedly and never looked back on it it's obviously the the goal that everybody wants to reach i mean you only need one and then you're pretty much etched in stone in the the football world as a super bowl champion that will never be thinking so that would that would definitely be awesome but we still have to play games and we have to play well so getting there is definitely going to be a tough journey for about to get a lot better as a team and you know hopefully everybody can stay healthy and definitely have a chance to do that is this team good enough to be able to do that everybody's good enough at this point in the season and that's that's talking about thirty two teams so there's a lot of variables that you don't understand i mean injuries happen you gotta go through training camp and playing games there and you still got a bill chemistry and ahmad route so i think there's a there's a lot of unknowns talent wise i mean you told me a team in the league but that's not able to talent wise and i'll tell you that.

"A dominant dominant player just as much as some of those other guys unbelievable and then in the secondary if we're going to pick four defensive backs who played for you and i know you've got an all star team this year coming up but give me four defensive backs and again i've got some ideas here but i want to see what you say for the four best defensive backs to the plate for wade phillips during his forty one years of coaching okay db's let's see well i mean just lately i to leave and harris were two of the best league right now still the best one week so chris harris has tremendous border and the key obviously is is tremendous blur so those two lately at cornerback oh let's see give me some names i let's see i can make it easy for you now once you give me that i mean we we can go right to the denver broncos knows steve atwater and dennis smith i mean that's easy the world those are easy yeah sure i mean that's a layup and yeah but again i'm drawing a blank here on whether there was anybody from houston from seventy six to eighty or new orleans from eighty one to eighty five or the eagles we have some some broken players home other we all star players trying to improve that so so basically we've got an old broncos backfield their way to yeah where the first time the second time yeah there there's a stronger the players have been around you know and i know everyone knows how great steve atwater was but i will say this to this day that dennis smith was oh he was he was the most most physical go oh here's a most physical safety of i've been around for sure he was incredible to watch and was i'm trying to think abbott terence newman in dallas who's played forever oh yeah yeah team really good right i mean and when i mean this when i say this is healing when you stop and think about it there may never be a coach in the nfl who is coached the defensive collection of talent that you have what does that mean to you well it means i'm lucky eric can because i've been able to stay in business as long and being around such you know so many good players and all these guys we've talked about a really great guys i mean they were great great guys a coach the the great people they were hard workers you know they all had similar things they had great ability but they utilize you know not everybody does it but they can you be a great player in this league wade and not be a great person i think it's hard to do i mean i think it's harder to do nowadays it's just because he i think they you know the the work ethic is a lot better than it used to be you know way back we didn't have an all season trove them so you know nowadays working hard now see they go through the summer get ready for training camp and you know we had a longer training camps because the guys weren't in good shape because some of them had to work and all season as another job so nowadays they're real professionals nowadays i think is there any chance that a player like marcus peters could crack through and supplant either chris harris or a key to leave on the old time way phillips defensive team yeah i probably lesson guys out in the second do i mean i'm sure we dealing teaser tj ward was another one that was pretty good player now i mean tj was a really really good player for us and helped us win that super bowl i think marcus yeah marcus from when i've seen so far i mean you know he's he's what he's had five more interceptions than than anybody in the league unless three years so i mean he's he's an exceptional talent and i think if they really well here what would it mean to you also to win another super bowl before the end of your nfl career yeah i mean you know that's that's the ultimate i've been lucky to be with a lot of winning teams you know and and had some opportunities before and and of course we finally did it a denver which you know the credit goes to certainly those guys and gary kubiak but yeah it'd be neat and be need to you know once you experience it you.

"The same thing and let's say you know i'm i'm gonna as one of the top defense alarming lake so they they bring a lot you can do a lot of things with them you can put pressure on on them to to cover their to match up with you know key was big receivers he's he's a big so he can handle the the larger receivers that we're seeing these days and we can put pressure on him play man to man or why can you know play some zones where they weren't he can jump routes and 'cause he's really smart and it gives you just a lot of things you can do with the guy as far as what you can call it's not what you call but what you can call with those kind of players is is really the secret how do you continue to relate so role to these younger players wait i don't know i'm just you know i myself i guess i don't i don't you know i i don't think i've changed the whole lot i've gotten a lot older but but i don't think i've changed the whole lot so because i you know i learned from my dad i mean you're not a task master you work with somebody you know if somebody you work with it's not you know they're not working for me they're working with me and that's that's always seemed to help and like i said i always explain why we're doing things and how important it is and and you know i always tell them hey if it's important enough to you get it done you mentioned the heat coach a lot of years this'll be a forty first nfl season that's a long time career began is night in nineteen seventy six is the oilers linebackers coach for the houston oilers they don't even exist anymore technically here so i want two to three little exercise if you don't mind i think it's kind of fun fortyone years isn't nfl coach i want wade phillips all star defensive team that you've coached each of the positions on the defense side would let's go through the defensive line if you don't mind best players you coach at east physician we're gonna make the all star defense for you what are you got wait oh wow oh i got too many defense lamb and i know you do that's you're going to say i don't know how you get a fiddle these guys i'm not even mention any names let's see who you put up there yeah well you know i started with your orders and you say the orders cosa linebackers and then i also close to in line there when i costa defense line i had had evan buffet is in the hall of fame and curley culp was in the hall of fame now and so i thought i was a hiccup a coast there for awhile how could ask them to do anything they could do it you know and i learned later on in my career that not everybody was locked those guys but i mean there's there's two great ones out there but i started out with and you know and then i got to go to philadelphia with with the guy name reggie white during a strike here we only play twelve games at twenty one sacks so where do you where reggie would have to be in there somewhere for sure okay here's the problem with this now so we got ellen buffet curley culp from ritu owned the hall of fame three four defensive line spots and we still have left by my count no yeah jj watt bruce thrown around yep who will probably more aaron donald yeah they're all bruce smith i i would say it's one of you know one of the greatest ones i coast to i mean you know he's reggie i mean both have what to hundred sacks or maybe bruce the whole time later and sex so he and reggie probably was a two greatest that that i think i coached that are retired now you know you throw in israel in jj what's the world i mean he's a tremendous tremendous player and then now donald so i.

"You don't see skilled gus you don't see why receivers you don't see defensive backs you don't see running backs plan at this advanced age so it's amazing but what he means to vikings he is one of four corners now since they drafted hughes from ucf that is a first round draft pick that the vikings have on the roster so he has been a valuable commodity to mike zimmer installing his defense of system newman followed him over had some history with them in cincinnati also in dallas so it's instrumental the coaches likes them that they have those warriors like newman who can give that message to younger playing only differences for terence newman when he was drafted the draft wasn't on television yet they deliver the results via telegram i mean this is i can't believe he's still so what were they doing when i got what i mean that was that was not a good that was there plead smoke signals i think is how they delivered notice smoke okay fair enough point that i'm making trying to make is this i i don't know that he'll be on the roster day one but because they spent another high draft pick on another corner like having them as him as a mentor in the offseason having them it's worth whatever little bit of bonus money they gave him to even if they end up cutting him but to be able to play that position in year sixteen it's remarkable and you've played at a decent level last year and your fifteen finally moved onto the pittsburgh steelers they drafted a potential replacement for ben rothlisberger and former oklahoma state quarterback mason rudolph here's what rudolph had to say about playing with big ben.

"Well that's the key i agree that you're gonna start at third on the depth chart he'll pass peterman shortly and then he and mccarron will be battling right so every single guy in that quarterback room is fighting for what they believe is their nfl life or their nfl destiny like peterman trying to prove he has a spot in this league and that he's not the guy that's gonna throw five picks on seventeen attempts as he didn't his first game aj mccarron sean approve i should have been a starter all along josh allen stran approve all the draft knicks wrong about accuracy in college like there isn't a josh mccown there isn't a guy even tyrod taylor who's gotten paid some money who's had some success in this level but recognizes work he is in reference baker mayfield like it's a tough situation to be drafted into for a guy who i think has the biggest learning curve of any of the quarterbacks i moved onto the vikings cornerback terence newman resigned with minnesota for sixteenth season in the nfl thirty nine this year thirty nine c impressive is this oh it's very impressive they love him in the vikings locker room he's been a tremendous leader for them and also continued to play at a high level you don't see skilled guys you don't see why receivers you don't see defensive backs you don't see running backs plan at this advanced age so it's amazing but what he means to the vikings he is one of four corners now since they drafted hughes from ucf that is a first round draft pick that the vikings have on the rostrum so he has been a valuable commodity to mike zimmer installing his defense of system newman followed him over has some history with them in cincinnati also in dallas so it's instrumental the coaches legs them that they have those warriors like newman who can give that message to younger play only differences for terence newman when he was drafted the draft wasn't on television yet they deliver the results via telegram they i mean this is i can't believe you still so what were they doing when i got what i mean that was that was not a good that was there.

"Number four the vikings selected central florida quarterback quarterback thank you corner i meant to say cornerback thank you mike hughes with number with the number thirty in the nfl draft from the the vikings needed an offensive lineman but they also wanted to cornerback and top players at that position are kinda often harder to find with the number thirty pick in the first round of last night's nfl draft in arlington texas minnesota selected central florida cornerback mike us general manager rick spielman had said before the draft there was no certainty that the vikings would select an offensive lineman in the first round they have a need there with starting right guard joe berger having retired and versatile jeremiah's syros cereals thank you having departed as a free agent but the vikings also had anita cornerback mackenzie alexander has been inconsistent in his first few seasons and terence newman might not return as a free agent and turns forty in september minnesota coach mike zimmer though said there is still chance newman could be back it's the third time in four years the vikings have taken a cornerback in one of the first two rounds of the draft trae wayne's was selected in the first round in two thousand fifteen and alexander and a second round in two thousand sixteen spearman's got a pattern in the in the draft of you know taking the quote best player available but taking the best player available that fits a need so not just like the best player available if they you know if they're stacked at a position and the highest rated player left on the board happens to be a position there are stacked and he's not gonna take that so i think what happened here was the off i believe they were targeting offense lineman but all of the offensive lineman today had rated higher than than mike hughes who they ended up taking we're off the board so mike us was the best player left on the board at that time and fit a need that they have they do the you know they do need some backup they need some some depth the defensive back position hughes's a fantastic player.

"Wwl radio network with the call i'm still trying to figure out how that ball hit the iron five times and did not go down the road i don't think it would have changed i don't think it will change anything about grayson allen because he's always going to be regarded many many many many quarters as public enemy number one but if he had been able to put that ball down plenty of duke fans would have said moment i e exactly you gotta leave our boy alone because we need him to deliver he was able to the scene the look on his face and the press conference even he couldn't believe that that's shot did not go down i will fully and watching it yeah i'll say this why didn't they go to marvin bagley the third overtime is beyond me and also in speaking bagley in in regulation that left handed baby hook yeah it was contested but that's one that he hits eight out of ten times he didn't draw iron there was an air ball the moment got bagley and then allen has the look and that that's a shot he hits also eight out of ten times and it should have gone down but the basketball guys give it a kiss the other way and that centimeter bright that little bit of english all of a sudden changes the way he's he doesn't have that duke moment it's amazing how many times it happens in sports was brought about that is i had duke winning the national championship in my bracket so i will really virginia oh my i had them at duke in the national championship i mean in that ball rolls out and then the league new terence newman goes off in the in the overtime now that my brags anything to shout out anyway but that missed shot unbc wreck me how much is old they'll beckham junior worth to.
