How Emilio Estevez Got One up on Alec Baldwin

"So Demi Moore though, you were you did wisdom with the Demi Moore. We were engaged. Yeah, that's what I thought. Yeah. No? No, I'm just kidding. No, but I'll tell you. But there's an Alec Baldwin component to this. This is in your new movie? And Alec doesn't even know this. Alex and his latest film does not know this story. Uh oh. Oh. Juicy castle. Do not use this clip. Alec Baldwin does not know the truth of how he came to be known by me. And that is, there was a bunch of us. There was a group of us. It was, you know, Tom Cruise and Sean Penn and so we were all up for the same roles and we, you know, we'd fight it out in some way would get the offer and someone would be in waiting. If that person passed, then you'd step in and we were all sort of kind of interchangeable for a moment. Along comes Alec Baldwin. Right. He's 6 foot something. He's not fucking ridiculously handsome. He's a wonderful actor. And the whole town is abuzz. All your hearing is Alec Baldwin Alec Baldwin. You and Tom Cruise are out slamming tequila. He's a dick. He's too tall. Right. So, Demi and I are engaged. She has a, she's living in a little bungalow that she owns in West Hollywood, and she has to go to the dentist and leaves me a home alone at her house. I sort of for, you know, for the afternoon. Right. Do you remember the days when we used to have the little phone answering machines and had the volume up? Oh, so you could hear it. Of screen calls. Hi. It's Alec Baldwin. Oh, I love this story. Go ahead. The phone rings. The volume's on. Hello to me. It's Alec Baldwin. And he's going on. And I don't know what. I don't know what the relationship is after that point. But I'm her fiance. Did you pick it up? It's Emilio. No. No, no, no. No? No, no. No. I walked over to the machine and I said, interesting. Alec Baldwin just called interesting. Huh. Erase. I hit the erase. And I felt like I had just given him some right hook, a cold cocktail. I knocked out a moment flat he's out overly tall. Done. To this day, I don't know if she ever heard the message or he ever called back.

New Lesbian Rebel Wilson Is in Love but NOT Engaged

"You know, for a day, let's say for a day or so, it was thought that America's newest lesbian Rebel Wilson and rebel from pitch perfect, she's the newest lesbian. It was believed that she was engaged to her girlfriend Ramona, a groomer. They made a 7 months and people assumed the question was asked and, you know, they got engaged. Because they were making out in a corner and telling everyone how excited they are to be engaged. That's what they said as a constant meanness tequila Halloween costume party. You know, George Clooney's tequila? The party Heathrow is on Halloween that he never attends because he's got a life now in children and they will both sporting diamonds on their ring fingers and people said the question was popped a couple of weeks ago. Let me ask you something. Why would two lesbians wear rings on their ring finger to show their engaged? And then only come out to say, no, no, no, we're not. Except to say they just want God damn it tension. You know, rebel was she loves a joke. She turns everything into a joke. She said, well, I was doing a thing called hot girl summer. I heard about it in rap songs and I was like, that sounds fun. But it really wasn't me a little bit more of a conservative girl normally. The date a few people over the summer and I had a really nice time and apparently single and looking for the right person. That's what she said over the summer. And now in love, she was and all those talk shows when she was dating a Budweiser air and naps dairy free ice cream founder Jacob bush, but they split in February of 2021 after about a year together, he must feel like a real asshole now. How does it feel for your woman to leave you for a girl? And one hand, it's gotta hurt and suck but on the other hand, it's like, they might fault. She doesn't like dick. I mean, that's just like, don't blame me. Obviously, it's something wrong with her.

When AJ Embarrassed Himself at Bill Maher's House

"Bill Maher's great podcast club random. Club random is nothing like real time. It's Bill sitting in a part of his house where every time he had parties, that's where people would go. I've been through a few of those. He throws great parties, there's a big difference in home property. And this one room was where you go to hear the music and smoke weed and, you know, it's a very comfortable kickback room. And bill's not in everyday pop guy. Throws these parties and, you know, there's only devices we barely drink. He'll take some tequila now and then, but on his podcast, he gets high and drinks, and he encourages his guests to do this and doesn't force them, but come over and do what you want. He invited me on the show. He's like 13 weeks in, so I would, you know, I don't know when I'm going to be asked, but it's going to be a while before you hear me in that because he does a lot of tapings before they air. But this part of the property is really nice. And he bought this house many years ago from Ben Affleck. And here's how stupid I remember I was that night. I remember thinking I was cool and hip and wanted to make a joke to Bill and some of his friends. So we're having fun and he told me, you know, this is Ben Affleck's former home. He was the last well, he was the last owner I bought it from Ben. And I remember saying to him like an idiot. Hey Bill, I was just in that other bedroom and I see now where Ben Affleck left his talent. Just such a stupid, even if even if, you know, look, I know he is a bad movie. That bob, but sometimes even the best of us want to be funny, but the funny man, and it's never a good idea. It's bill's house. We had to make the jokes, but him and I have this relationship where we do laugh at each other's jokes. He's very real and honest. He's not one of those guys who doesn't care who people think his friends off. He likes you, he likes you. But I regretted that joke for years. I love that athletes work. I respect how he made it, how he carved out a tremendous life for himself. The guy's buying $60 million houses now. So that night, I'm sure it won't be the last night that night I was an

"And I saw it in our feedback and I was thinking, oh, this is just the same thing that we talked about. I don't know, sometime last year, this F-22 crash. And then I was telling him that we had already covered it and he goes, oh, I didn't realize I thought you didn't you hadn't seen the latest update on the investigation of what exactly caused this crash. And so I went back and looked at it and went oh, you're right, Richard, sorry, put it back on our feedback. So he says, hi, ABG, how simple mistakes can lead to a $200 million loss. Thanks for the great podcasts. And the article from air force times says human error tech glitches and tape caused the May 2020 F-22 crash. And we're watching on the video, the result of that crash, a pretty sad looking F-22. This next slide is the front end, the business end of the well, I don't know if it's a business. But the front end of an F-22. Let's see. Several mistakes include, including maintenance, pilot, and technology errors, plus a wayward piece of tape compounded to cause the secretive May 2020 plane crash in Florida, that totaled an F-22 raptor fighter. According to the results of an air force investigation, redacted results of a commander directed an inquiry into the $202 million incident. Those things are not cheap. Obtained by air force times via the freedom of information act sheds the most light so far on how the accident transpired for one of the air force's most advanced airframes. Air force times reported in October 2021 that the F-22 grew increasingly wobbly upon takeoff, then refused to turn left and barrel rolled into the ground after the pilot safely ejected. The service last year said last year, that a mismanaged wash caused the plane's demise, but didn't offer further details. It was one of 9 major F-22 mishaps in fiscal 2020. That's a lot. That's a big number for mishaps in one year. The unnamed pilot involved in the May 15th, 2020, incident was a captain, serving as the 43rd fighter squadron's assistant operations, director, the 43rd flying squadron, our fighter squadron is the only air force unit that provides initial and requalification training for active duty, error National Guard and air force reserve, F-22 pilots. Problems began two days earlier when maintainers towed the advanced fighter jet inverts monthly wash to help prevent corrosion. A crew chief was tasked with managing the wash team of four maintainers to ensure they correctly cleaned the jet. The crew, chief periodically checked in on their work but didn't stay throughout the process. And inspected the plane once the wash was done. Although he didn't really inspect it very well. According to the tech order or maintenance manual that tells ehrman how to wash a raptor, a supervisor needs to watch over and participate in that cleaning, but the only team member with training in that role didn't know who the designated supervisor was supposed to be. Neither did the other three airmen. Hurricane Michael, the category 5 hurricane that forced F-22s to relocate from tyndall to egeland was partly to blame. The discipline and standardization of conducting washes in this unit suffered when operations moved from tindall to egeland after hurricane Michael, according to the report. Airman saw no problems during routine preflight checks, run before and after the day of the crash, though it's unclear how thoroughly the jet was inspected. They missed something crucial. Maintainers need to cover up electronics on the outside of the aircraft that would be damaged by water before they start a wash. But airman left tape on a part of the F-22s air data system known as a beta port that no one caught before the jet took flight. Now I'm going to pause here for a moment. There are probably several opportunities to catch something like this. And this is not something that's just related to military jets, but the jets that Rick and I fly have static ports that you have to make sure are clear of any obstructions like tape because when they take a jet transport aircraft somewhere to get washed, they are using high pressure water or whatever, whatever they're using to wash the thing. And they cover up these ports with tape. And sometimes, they forget to remove the tape. And when we're doing our preflight, walk around, that's one of the critical areas that we make sure is free and clear. Of any kind of blocking or contaminant. And so that's what happened in this case. The tape was covering a beta port. And but that's not the only problem here. While the jet was still on the runway, an alert popped up to tell the pilot that something was amiss with the flight control system. The pilot ignored it, and took off and started to climb. A new emergency procedure instituted for the F-22 just 15 days before the crash told pilots to abort take off if a flight control system advisory comes up during departure. Anyway, so I'm not going to read the entire thing. We're going to have this in the show notes because we're getting close well, we're actually past our three hour point at this point. But so we in the flying community have a way of disseminating information. And it can be through emails. It can be through a dedicated pubs publication system on your EFB or whatever. And apparently there were some holes in this system. And it turns out that the incident pilot here hadn't seen this memo that says, if you get this message, do not take off. And there was a question I have there is if they got that message before that wasn't part of their training, I guess they changed the procedure on it or left more autonomy. Yes. I don't know. Thank God. It seems like maybe this is something that they it was not uncommon to see. And the pilot thought, well, that's just not a problem. I thought that, too, and I think that they call it a flight control system advisory. So maybe it's something with it being advisory as opposed to a warning. Like, hey, heads up..

"The cost index is a number that has printed on your flight plan and the cost index basically very basic terms, but it deals with is the cost of the operation fuel versus time. And that number is a number that you put into your flat management system. And that is how your flight management system figures at what your econ speed is or your most economic speed is. Oftentimes, because of all these variables, it actually is cheaper to operate at a lower cost index, meaning a lower speed, yes, you're going to burn a little bit of extra fuel because you're going to have slightly higher fuel burn because of your slightly higher pitch attitude to maintain the altitude and slightly higher. Parasitic drag, not parasitic, that'd be the other one. Induced. But basically, it deuces drag, right? It's slightly higher and you strike because you're basically flying at a slightly higher pitch at it. But anyway, it means that you're going to basically be landing at the exact time at the precise time that you were expected instead of having to inspect instead of landing early and waiting on the ground and waiting for a K two open and then not being able to park when you thought you were going to park and people missing connection and all that stuff. So slower, sometimes is better. Faster. There isn't always better. Well, that's what the girls say. So just a quick thing. One of the things that we do and when we usually into somewhere in the latter part of our climb, or maybe even before that, but once we are above 10,000 feet, we're accelerating and we're getting out of that airport environment. We will look at our takeoff time and our projected flowing time, and we see what we're expected as far as our arrival time and if it's in a ten minute window that the company has proposed that this is where we want you to be on the ground in this window. And then if it looks like you're going to be 5 or ten minutes before that, then as Rick said, we can proactively go into the flight management system and adjust our cost index to slow down a little bit. Now, you could do that to a certain point, but the air traffic control system is basing your flights progressed on progress on what you propose that you were going to do when you file on the flight plan. Exactly. Sometimes you have to make sure that they understand that instead of cruising at 7 8 Mark, we're going to be a 7 four and you say is it okay if we slow down a little bit and there are some actual parameters that we have to adhere to ten minus ten knots .01 minus zero one mock. So anything outside of that in each of the and not only because of slot requirement or anything like that. But remember, you're flying through an organized system where separation needs to be maintained between traffic at altitudes because you not only have the vertical separation required by RVS, and you also have lateral separation along airways. And so yeah, and as Jeff was saying here, oftentimes, if you are trying to keep a schedule, it might behoove you to perhaps stay on your plan route and refrain from accepting any direct to. That might shave time off your arrival. And the cool thing about this whole thing is that you could reference and actually act as information in real time. You just have to look down into the right of your cap and down to the left of the FO to a little line on the control display unit that says ETA. And so based on what's going on in the flight at that time and the current conditions at that altitude, that is going to be your ETA. And you can kind of go off of that. And the cool thing also is that nowadays having real time direct indication with dispatch with via cars, you can let them know what's going on and what to expect. And so it makes your mix live a lot easier. Yeah, it seems like more times than not in my experience that when we make an adjustment to the cost index, it's to increase it and make us fly a little bit faster because whatever the traffic at the airport may have been more than it was planned for. We have something to do with de icing, et cetera. So you're trying to make up some time and get passengers to the destination as close as possible to the scheduled arrival time. But I have to say, one of my chefs that peeves is, I don't get to play that very often. I like that though. A lot of our arrivals aren't have arrivals have down winds that they put you on. There is Frankfurt. Frankfurt is notorious for that. Or Atlanta is a perfect example. If you're coming in from, let's say the northwest or the southwest and they're landing to the west, that means you're going to have to be put on a downwind. And there's really no way to let the FMS know exactly at what point you're going to turn base from that downwind. And so it kind of just projects a line out into space like 25 miles or something. And my pet peeve is not that, but the pet peeve is my first officers just looking into the progress page of the flight management system and just putting down that's our time that we're expecting to be touching down. And that time I don't think they realize is being used in all of our computer systems and monitors for when the flight is expected to touch down and arrive at the gate and everything. And a lot of times that could be like 5, ten minutes off. And so I try to say, okay, look, let's look at some other points on this arrival, and then from that point, let's see when we're expected to and then add, depending on the situation. It's a visual approaches. It's going to be a relatively short final. Is it a regular ILS approach? Then we'll add this. Is it a PRM? Precision runway monitor, kind of approach, which is 20 to 25 miles out for final, a very long final. Then you can add just the estimated time of arrival based on that. And I'll tell you a little secret, the most accurate thing that I've found, and it's because for so many years flying airplanes that didn't have a cars or flight management systems, the flight plan that paper flight plan that I'm handed the time that's on that flight plan to the time that you lift off. And then if you're going straight into the airport, then that should be almost to the minute. When you actually touch down, if you're going to go around and land the opposite direction, then add 5 minutes if it's one of those airports where you have the PRM approaches going on the net ten minutes to it. And within a minute or two, it's going to be very accurate. And people are blown away by that. And I go, yeah, well, this system has been around for decades. And these flight planning systems are extremely accurate, and they.

"20 feet and then I had golf clubs on the back of. All right. So you should look at the video. There's a lot more to it that was just a couple small, short excerpts, but now talking about the towing into the gate. I heard staff and Rick commenting in the background about there's a certain area or a certain gate or gates in the Baltimore area. But the gates that we fly into Baltimore, we don't have that kind of situation, but Los Angeles, at least in our older, where we used to be in Los Angeles at our old terminal Gates. There were several gates that required you to stop the airplane, have them hook up the tug and then drag you in the rest of the way. And it was because of the congestion in the area and they don't want you to go in there. Even if you have both engines or all engines running because it might be if it's perfectly planned and you don't have to stop, you could do it with a momentum and keep the power at idle or close to idle and it wouldn't be a big deal. But sometimes, as we all know, you have to stop short of the gate and then to get the airplane rolling again, you've got to add considerable amount of power and if things are kind of tight. You could end up blowing over baggage carts and causing all kinds of damage and possibly injury. So there are certain flights that require that. Now, why it took almost 40 minutes, I don't know, that might be some comedic. That sounds like a embellishment. Perhaps. It could be just make it more funny. Make it more funny. Yeah. Well, just like Texas and the shock said in Charlotte, it's because of take corners. There's a couple of gates on the E concourse for the regional flights where it would be tricky to taxi into those places and you look at the line that's painted on the ground for the tug to pull it around and makes this question mark. You have to basically follow that to get it lined up perfectly and that's why they told you in there. Funny story though about needing to be towed to the gate, not too long ago, maybe last summer. On a flight that arrived into Atlanta. And it won't name the airline that has occurred with, but it wasn't acme. Not acne. Good. Uneventful flight. Short from Charlotte, like 40, something minutes, easy. Taxi off her own way and park at the gate. Or so we thought. And I'm sitting on the left side of the aircraft towards the front and I'm going to use stairs here, but I'm looking at how far we are from the jet bridge. I'm like, well, maybe it was like moved out of the way for something else. I'm like, I don't know, just proportionally doesn't seem right. You seem too far away here. Engine shut down very clearly. We're sitting there. And then two seconds later. Stay in your seats, please. We're going to need to be total a little bit farther up. They stopped us short of the line we needed to stop at. And they already shut down the engines? Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's not good. Yeah. That happens. That's happened to me, actually. And all you do is you just hook up and it wasn't a big deal. It was just like, okay. Embarrassing. Came up with it. Just a second, what Stephanie and Jeff are saying there. I remember, especially when you're taxing the 7 47 around, especially the dash 8, which is the longest commercial airplane out there. I think the dancing of two two 5 might be slightly longer, but anyway, just know that the shade is a very, very, very long airplane where you have 225 feet wingspan and then these engines, these GNX engines suck in and blow a whole lot of air and it's very, very tricky taxing this airplane around, especially when you're sitting up like you might be you might as well be taxing this thing up from the fourth story of a building somewhere. So it's really hard to keep the center line and make those tight turns. So oftentimes that's exactly what you need to do. And a lot of airlines, especially I know my Ireland does because I refer to these all the time, they have what are called station guides and you will before flying into a particular airport that you don't fly into and out of all the time. You'll review this information. And often times they'll tell you. Based on where we usually park, you are expected or you can expect to tax you up to a certain whole short point or a whole bar and just shut engines down there make sure you have the APU going so you can maintain electrical and air. And then just basically have a wait for a tow truck to just boil you in because of that. Because of the space constraints and all that. So it happens more often than people realize. That also absolutely. No, that all sounds reasonable. I think the case I was describing it was unintentional. But no big deal. Yeah. Easily remedied. You know, it's better than the alternative of going too far. You know, that's exactly what was going to say right now. The worst. I mean, I hate this one of my pet peeves, man. You're coming in. You've got the center line right where he needs to be. You have the just the right amount of momentum of the aircraft going in and the guys pulling you in, everything is going great. And all of a sudden, he goes from just keep coming in to cross. Yeah. And you have to slam on the brain. Yeah. Damn it. Well, I hate that. In your airplane, you don't have all the passengers to think about, right? But in ours, I'm thinking, I'm going to do that. I'm going to make a nice slow, smooth stop, and it's your fault for not making it a proportionate motion to stop in a nice smooth way. So unless you're about to hit something or whatever. Yeah, I remember so when I first, when I first upgraded all those years ago, I was flying passengers. And my check airman on one of the.

Marte bianchini also reported that according to the investigation, the security cameras at the doctor Joaquin balaguer international airport showed that the aircraft was towed to the hangars, owned by the company, and that the work carried out on the right wing extended for approximately three hours. During that time the passengers who had traveled to Orlando waited in the VIP terminal of the airport, the investigative commission was able to verify that a similar aircraft was on the main ramp as a reserve to be used in case the maintenance work was not completed. But according to statements by a senior executive of the helo dose a company, the passengers required to carry out the flight on that particular particular plane. That kind of highlighted that in pink, I'm not sure why that would be so important that they used that exact plane. Maybe they liked the paint job better or something. Upon completion, did you guys hear that? Yes. Yes. That was me. Sorry. No, because it came in so loudly, I figured it must have something to do with something I have set up here. Somebody comes to me, just now and I'm going to read your brain from saying all of them. Okay. Upon completion of maintenance, security cameras show activity under the aircraft's right wing with spoiler movements on both wings and upon completion. The aircraft is towed to the main ramp and prepared for flight at Orlando. The sea should be two Orlando, I think. The CIA found that before, and during the shoot, the security cameras show movements in the flight controls, both ground spoilers went up, and only the ones on the left wing retracted. The three spoilers on the right wing stayed extended. A video made by a witness from the castle stadium. Okay. Shows that in flight, the aircraft continued with the spoilers of the right wing up. While those are the left wing look like they are attracted. According to the investigation. The recordings of the aircraft were the control tower at that moment. The first officer stated that he had a hydraulic problem, and later reported problems related to the flaps, then declared an emergency and requested vectors to direct him back to the international airport, as the situation progressed they decided to divert to the loss Americas international airport, where they were authorized to land in a south north direction on runway three 5. And after passing the head of said runway and turning left, they hit the trees and then the terrain on the right side of the track about 200 meters. The total duration of the flight was about 15 minutes. Okay, so that first slide Liz, I think taken from one of the security cameras. And you can see that the airplane taxiing out and clearly you see the spoilers, the ground spoilers on the right wing are in the opposition. And that looks like it. Which is really interesting. I mean, a lot of I mean, I don't know, I've never flown a G four, and I don't know what the yeah, not only that, but the fact that often times on bigger airplanes, we have what's called roll spoilers. And so if you command a role with a certain direction, then you're going to get the aileron and the roll spoilers come up. But if you look at the picture that was just on there a little while ago, you'll see that only the spoilers only the spoilers are up on the aileron is flush. But then again, I don't know if this is even equipped with roll spoilers at all. So that just does not look right right away. And then just what you said stuff. The fact that is there a fly control position indicator or their flag control position transducers that show what the position of the flag controls is in real time, which is something that would be helpful in this situation. I don't know if you'd be able to look out the window and kind of see the wing and maybe I don't know, again, I've never flown the kind of airplanes. I have no idea. It seems to me, I haven't either. But that seeing it from the cockpit looks to me like it would be impossible or difficult to so from that angle. Yeah. Cockpit windows there. So probably not. Yeah, unless you opened up the if they have an openable window up there that you can stick to. You don't have to have some indication on the ground then to stick your head out the window and look to the difficult to notice. So I'm assuming that everything that they were seeing and on their display panels were indicating that everything was normal because, you know, you wouldn't purposely take off if you knew that there was something. Wrong. Yeah. And these positioning the carriers are pretty straightforward and the way they work is just they basically work proximity sensors. So if something is if something is in a position where it shouldn't be, it'll show. And if you don't have a flight control synoptic page or a way of seeing what the position of the collect control is, then I imagine there'd be some kind of configuration warning. Is that like a limit switch, Rick? Or like a Halifax sensor? You got me there. I have no idea. There's got to be some kind of because usually the way these sensors work is by crossing lines of flux and that that is what is going to give a system the idea or the data input to let it know that a flight control surface or something that needs to be the position of something is close to something else. So once those lines of flux get crossed, now again might be older type technology. I'm sure there's newer stuff now. But the technology is pretty straightforward, whether it's new or old. And if there's no flag control synaptic page or a light or some kind of configuration warning about, how would you know? And if you can't look at the window, do you get on the airplanes that you fly? Do you get feedback from the actuator and a separate position indication? Feedback from the actuator and what way? What the autopilot on or off? Either way, are there any indications of actuator health? Aside from just a position of the flap or whatever. So yes and no. So we do have a flight control synoptic on all the Boeing Jets have flown. And during flight without a pilot on, we have what are called so the yoke. And the rudder pedals. Are connected to what are called background actuators. So those, so the autopilot, the autopilot director system is going to.

"tequila" Discussed on Airline Pilot Guy - Aviation Podcast

"Stand by news. This from the aviation Herald, a hop, exclamation point, Embraer, ER J one 70 on behalf of our France, registration, foxtrot hotel Bach box buck stop. Bravo X, ray golf, performing flight, 1671 from Lyons to Kane, Khan? I guess France was en route at flight level two 8 zero about 70 nautical miles southeast of Paris, Paris. When the aircraft was overflown by a cessna 5 50 business jet. Yeah. What? That guy had the flaps out still. Now I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. I'm offended at airline pilot dot com. I apologize. We're starting right off the bat with the offense. Offense are offense. Yeah. Yeah, well, here we go. Anyway, the assessment of 5 50 business jet had been clear decline to flight level two 7 zero. Both aircraft were able to continue to their destinations without further incidents. The BEA reported the assessment of 50 performing a flight from parile bourge to Geneva Switzerland and counter problems with their autopilot while climbing through flight level two three zero. The pitch angle increased in the aircraft suffered a load factor. Not sure exactly what they mean. When that happens, especially now, I hate it when I suffer a load factor. The aircraft had been cleared to climb to flight level two 7 zero, but overflow the Embraer ER J one 70 that was en route at two 8 O. The cessna crew reported they had a malfunction of the number one altitude and speed indication system. The transponder therefore reported erroneously, there were on flight level two 7 zero. This created a loss of separation with the potential of a collision without triggering tcas. The BEA rated the occurrence and incident only incident only an open investigation. I'm a stand corrected here. I thought the 5 50 overflying the Embraer was on the I guess lateral way or just past it, but this is, I guess, it over climbed it, I guess. So yeah, that makes sense. Yeah. So, yeah, apparently that was a potential collision. There and I thought there was some other information that I had read regarding this. No, maybe not. Maybe I'm thinking of another incident. But is that all we know about that? Yeah. I guess. Yeah. I guess the problem with the autopilot is there's clearly there are they took manual control which is what you're supposed to do, which is good through 5 little two three zero, which is fine. You don't. You don't have a two 8 zero anyway. So that's legal. So yeah, I mean, not a lot of information there. I don't think. It sounds to me like maybe one of the altitude speed indication systems was in error, and that was the one that was associated with that particular autopilot and maybe they didn't recognize it quickly enough. But as you say, Rick, just turn everything off, try to figure out what's going on. Oh, it looks like your system is good. Let's go ahead and re-engage the autopilot with that one, not this one, you know, but maybe it just happened so fast that the yeah. And it's perhaps, I don't know, perhaps good to remind folks out there that passed a certain point depending on the country. You go through what's called transition altitude, where you stop referencing your local ultimate setting and start referencing what's called Q and it's 29 92. So everybody is referencing 29 92 for that specific reason. So that everyone is guaranteed the separation that needs to be there for first of all safety. And the reason why you can't have, you can't be handful on a zero to Niagara is because RVS, M starts there. And your separation goes down to a thousand feet vertical, which is sounds like a lot, but when you have coming at each other with a closure rate of almost Mach two, it's really not a lot. So is that the same in every country to Rick the RV SM altitudes or does that vary? So obviously it's the same everywhere. The thing that changes is transition altitude or transition level. I remember that was different. Which is really weird because I remember in Ecuador, the fly from Quito to guayaquil, I think we're going to talk about key to hearing a little bit. But the fly from Quito to guayaquil was only 30 minutes the transition transition altitude coming out of keto with level one 8 zero 18,000 feet. And then transition level going into guayaquil was only 3000 feet. So that made up. Yeah, so that made for a very confusing set of circumstances there if you weren't careful. So that's 18,000 in the United States. Exactly. And it's transition altitude going up and transition level coming down. Hey, Rick, I had a quick technical question about this. So I'm familiar in smaller airplanes, altimeter, or the transponder is getting its altitude information through an encoder. So it's like a piece of transponder, equipment, and bigger airplanes like this with flight management systems. Is that a data packet coming from the aher? Or is it still processing the altitude information on the transponder side? Well, the latter is a bigger airplanes, at least the bones that have flown. They don't have a heart. Basically the input that goes into the ultimate is just that. It's a barometric input that goes under the ultimate, and that goes through an air data computer, and that gets branched off to a myriad of subsystems, including the transponder. And different auto piles, depending on what autopilot you're working with, which is why if you remember back in 1990 6, I think it was a 97. It was an accident. It was an error proof 7 57 that crash into the Pacific Ocean because taken off with tape over the static ports. And they were trying to figure out what their altitude was. And ATC was relaying the altitude to the pilots. But what the piles didn't realize is that the erroneous altitude.

Anti-Racism Is Alive and Well in America

"Moral principle being defended by Harper Lee and that is evoked by tequila mockingbird is the moral principle that we should not use people's race against them. We should not play the race card. It's the idea that we are all individuals. We are all in the country a minority of one that our rights accrue to us by virtue of being human. These are human rights. And so what you see is that the same anti human hatred that is attacked in To Kill a Mockingbird is alive and well today, except now it marches not under the banner of a certain kind of brazen racism, but now under the banner of an equally brazen anti

"It tastes sweeter but not in a good way. I taste like hints of coconut. And i'm sorry but the key not coconut. Yeah there's something a little sweet and something a little like this was fabricated somewhere rather than distilled. I take it has a cahan of like some spice There are the spice at the end. Gets you you're like what the hell is this. What it is but it has it has a little. Bit of like some spice. It almost tastes like something familiar. Like i should know what it is. But i don't know what it is got alina. I don't wanna say it's nutmeg but something in that the faily guard arlino that there's something there that just and but with the little industrial like i almost feel like You know the thing about the fourth. Eliza is it. Has this very like rich body that you feel the hallway through. This feels almost very thin. At the beginning you get a blast sweet and then you get this weird spice manufactured is like it's supposed to make you feel everything that get a feel yet if it tries to be everything in. It's nothing yeah. I would put it in a margarita. Well we'll save our guests for the very end because we we have to give everyone a chance so next up. Here's mystery celebrity tequila number to lose. I thought us boom at this point This one's a little bit watery. It has that spice at the end as well which i don't like it wants to imitate the burn of a classic la but it just like okay. Here's our pick it just little pinch of it and then off. The i would agree. It doesn't have the burn but it second wants to give you that. Burn just gives you little hint of it and it almost tastes a little water down. Yeah yeah it's not it's not the thickness of it's not like other tequila. Watered down doesn't have that sweetness which i appreciate. I don't want sweetness. the la. don't want fake sweetness. i want the natural sweetness. This this aspires a little bit more to that. And it's a feels just like that spice at the end. And then i forget the smell yes and i was gonna say i feel like i don't get like the typical thicky less. No that that that smells like the water. Like if you're taking a shower and it's all those calcium deposits smells like nice. You know definitely has more of an alcohol. Smell like you're just straight up smelling alcohol harsher. Yeah was something when when the zombie apocalypse happens. You can use the sticky. Let attend to your wounds. It would be perfectly fine in a margarita. But yeah it's like so far it doesn't hold a candle to the fourth no no and now the last la.

"You can't talk about celebrities. Tequila tasting celebrity thicky lot and i can't drink all at the myself so i invited one of my colleagues and you know what a friend of la time so got lamey. Rhonda's arts columnist for the los angeles times lean. I welcome thank you for having me and there. She is one of the owners of sarah's market here in city terrace sara. What's up. thank you so much for having me. So the episode is about celebrity tequila and of course one of the big things at least with my friends. They get mad at like kendall. Jenner has a tequila. George clooney has a tequila. they talk about cultural appropriation. Why is this an issue. Or why do the gringos like latin american culture. So much catalina. Because you bring the south american perspective so well i mean this goes back. Centuries people have always been enamoured in the united states with you know the sort of exotic the spiciness the sort of the faraway -ness of of latin american culture. I mean all the way from like the early spanish. Yes does here in los angeles to disney. Walt disney himself traveling all over latin america in creating cartoons inspired by latin america. I think you know. There's a sense of this kind of latin romance spanish romance that has always entranced and yet sarah when it comes to some of these celebrities making tequila or making beers or whatever it seems like some celebrities can get away with it but others can't. Let's put it this way. Can the celebrity make superior product when it comes to alcohol I think they can but might thing. Is i think they need to work. Very closely with the producers and attention to customers want not just because name on it. It's going to sow type of thing. I feel like they need to really work very closely with the consumers and producers. So now we're going to actually drink keila but we're gonna do an i'm boxing. I bought four thicky last one magnificent tequila than three. I have no idea and the magnificent tequila. We talk about tradition. You can't get more traditional in this one four tequila so i'm gonna pass it around for you folks and just described the bottle. What do you think. Initially when i i see it. I get a strong presence if that makes any sense it's not strong. I don't mean strong as in like the alcohol content is strong as in like had an attitude. it'd be like a heavy strong like demands respect attitude and then you have on the top you have a pina the heart of the gavitt. That's how you make your front. From roasting that and getting the juices gotta lena. This is one of my favorite. So i'm glad we're we're starting with one of my favorite tequila in fact my friend at an i Drink much of it. We call it the mouthwash and and in fact. He uses empty bottles to store his mouthwash. How much he loves us. So i'm very happy to have this in the mix today. Yeah where this is going to be our base. We're gonna start with that and then we're going to take these other ones right now. We're just seeing the bottles. Okay next bottle and i do not know the order. Okay that am. I not akilah by the rock. So this is the rotten dwayne johnson. The rocks tequila. What do you think of the bottle sarah. Okay it's doesn't have. I don't feel has a heavy presence. It feels classic in clean is what it looks like to me. The font is simple. there's not too much on the libor that the backgrounds. You get like that guy. That's on the the plant but it looks like a classic clean label bossom gardellin. I would have to agree. You have this beautiful landscape painting on it. Sarah font this is definitely dolled up rock. Not wrestling rock. Okay next up a boy haha tequila by these influencers named martin to belly and martin hoffy. Maybe our producer mighty. She's younger than us so she might know who. They are ha tequila. Sarah had thicky la bright. It looks like a fun bottle. How which is why it says haha. Yes i feel like we're going to be laughing it up a storm with this yup. I actually like the pinkney. That's on here pink. Eli i think it will attract me. Specifically because of the colors got alina. Yeah this looks like this is definitely you're attractive. Southwestern color palette phoenix airport gift shop kind of College which i like. I mean you know i say half-jokingly it's also obviously designed for instagram. Because this will be instantly recognisable while some of the other labels are a little bit more nate or quiet. Something like this is going to pop. The name is just beyond stupid. i can't i can't i. Cannot i could not order this with a straight face at a restaurant like a. What kind of tequila would you like. Can i get the haha please. It's like no. Yeah thank you influencers. No thank you. And then speaking of influencers. Lastly and who knows maybe lease lee. And i'll start with caroliina via one tequila by john. Farve adelson nick jonas. So catalina star. Well you know john. Vetoes is the Fashion designer who occupied. Cbgb's famous punk club in new york with his boutique. And i guess this is perfect. It's like he and nick. Jonas are inhabiting tequila so they take these shells. Go abbott thumb. This definitely feels old man club chair like they're going for i think a legacy look you know it's a brown bottle it has Gold gold touches. A kind of a flirt and lee type pattern on the front. Which i presume is supposed to be in garvey but looks a little to lead to me You know this is trying to say we are class. Sarah john vetoes. Did you like to join us. Brothers into big on the jonas brazil know about them. But i didn't follow it heavily. But i will say that i do like the way it's labeled. It's not like an actually rolled on there and i liked it. It's gold but it does feel like it belongs in some type of club. Or i gotta be part of some club to have this But this is actually interesting. I am interested in this one. Actually that's what we're gonna do now for the listeners. we're gonna start with for the lesser. We need a base of a great tequila and then after that. It's going to be mystery tequila marine our producer. She's gonna come in and not tell us who it is. We're gonna talk about the keila then at the end. We're going to have the grand reveal. So we're gonna start drinking salou. We're starting with the baseline fourth tequila. Oh that's good the food. That has the i hate to use this word mouth feel but it's not too sharp is not too soft is just perfect texture. It's a little bit sweet. Does it hit you too much. By the way we're dreams saddled episode means. It's been aged one year. So this is just your classic. Fourth tequila sarah. I think it's very very smooth. It's gentle it doesn't feel as hot coming down or something so it's really really good now. We go to the mystery tequila. We're gonna drink describe him. And then we're gonna take guesses to what tequila clink of glass. They'll be salute narrow more. That's this one..

"With awesome about fourth alleged based on decades old recipe and. This is one of the things that few people know about. And i wrote about this in my book. Taco usa. how mexican food concord. America shameless plug there but around the nineteen forties the makers of dickey lat time in mexico. That actually change the recipe of tequila because more american consumers were starting to go down to like acapulco they would of course juarez tasted the keila. The americans destroying our culture but keillor industry has always been about making money for themselves. Knew who cares who buys it. Yeah absolutely i mean. I think it's an interesting point that you know gringos have long been consumers of tequila and you know for decades have actually shaped how it tastes you know how it's marketed how it's made So that idea like appear kind of you know mexico. Specific spirit is maybe not actually so realistic. You talked about. Michael jordan's tequila brand michael jordan. The best basketball player of all time. But i haven't tasted as eli my. "Kate. This rush of tequila made by celebrities or being bought by. Celebrities has begun to transform the city of the key. Latte self and you went down there. You went through the distilleries and you talk to a couple of people. Yeah had tequila is madness. It was packed with tourists. Walking around holding these giant containers filled with like tequila drinks. People were partying and the distilleries were all under construction. They're all being expanded their boutique hotels popping up everywhere. All of the ave farmers who are suddenly making bank all have new trucks and detractors salutes. It's really impressive. Kinda you can see the money coming into the region and yeah like a lot of people are really excited. They think this is a really good thing. And then you know you have the traditionalist who have kind of this affinity for the older processes and they say that with this boom of tequila production you're losing some of the kind of processes that make really good tequila and so you're you're sacrificing quality one of the people you talk to was a descendant of the original south here in the united states south akilah just terrible terrible terrible tequila but this gentleman makes four alyssa which is an awesome amazing tequila. Yeah guillermo ericsson. South has an incredible story. His grandfather was running south tequila when he sold the brands To an italian company in the seventies and poor guillermo he wanted to work in the tequila industry but he couldn't because his grandpa had sold this company so like twenty thirty years later he he managed to get up the money on to basically start his own company doing tequila making the old fashioned way and his cuba is fabulous. "The keillor's a natural drink of mexico wrapped up in the country's mythology via film song and our but makers themselves have long relied on american consumers for their bottom line in two thousand twenty. Seventy two percent of all tequila produce was exported to the united states now. Celebrities see mexican spirits as a way to expand their brand and make easy bucks our guest today. La times mexico correspondent caitlyn anthem and also do a taste test with my colleagues to see which vessel every tequila of the mall and which is just block. We'll get to that in a bit and stick around until the end. I mean you should always but this time we also have a profile of an athlete. Who's competing in the paralympic games. But first we're gonna hear from kate recently. She did a big story about the rise of celebrity tequila and traveled to the heart of tequila country. The city of the self in the state of highly school kate. Welcome to the times thanks. It's good to be here dickey. La's usually associated with the state of halley's copa specifically to regions the city of tequila itself and the area. Another area called los altos. The elise go which translates as highlands. This mythical place in mexican culture that's also supposed to be the birthplace of naci so describe those two regions so tequila is located in a really beautiful valley just outside of the city of guadalajara. It's hot dryer and los. Altos is a region About two or three hours away. That's a lot higher. That's why it's godless on those and it's known for Having this really amazing soil so things grow really well there. And if you're like a tequila connoisseur you can tell which tequila comes from gob as in which place just by tasting it because you know god is have a really different lever depending on where they grow and both of these regions. Of course you see a lot of garlic. Because that's where they grow tequila big ranches the chato culture so you know for americans. We're talking about the guys in mariachi outfits sources a lot of stereotypes of mexican romance and all that. Yeah there is kind of a lot of romance ization. I think that happens there but it's also like a really real culture you know to. Cuba was born in these regions about five hundred years ago and the process of making. It is kind of fantastic and amazing. It's it's like an artisanal process. You know that. That is really specific. And i think that's one of the reasons that celebrity to kilos have gotten under people's skin because a celebrity coming there and kind of buying into this industry. Kinda goes against what tequila is supposed to be about which is a bit more of a of a homegrown kind of thing. You can't just make tequila anywhere in mexico like say whisky you can make whisky anywhere. The mexican government limits where tequila produced. Who highly on certain parts of four other states so the country has really invested itself historically and protecting tequila rate absolutely It's kind of like you know certain types of liqueurs that you could find. In europe floor champagne champagne is just sparkling wine from the champagne region. But yes so. Mexico's kind of tried to protect it with this thing called the denomination of origin. But the one thing mexican law doesn't protect is who can own these companies and so that's why you've seen just this flood of american foreign capital in recent decades into this booming industry. Let's give credit where credit is due. Sammy hagar the og celebrity thicky lawmaker. Taboada oh god back in one thousand nine hundred ninety s named after resort and and cantinas and all that so you had other celebrities over the years. I remember santana released tequila like in the early twenty tens but there is one celebrity. An actor in particular who's tequila company was sold for billion dollars. And that's what really started this. Most recent celebrity tequila rush great. So george clooney and his friend randy gerber. Who happens to be the the husband of supermodel. Cindy crawford Started this tequila company in twenty thirteen. Basically they paid a family to make tequila for them on and five years later they sold the company to one of these big beverage conglomerates for billion dollars So you're right like celebrities of all has been interested in tequila and actually them making a profit. You know. Sammy hagar sold his brand fred ton santana as well But when you hear a billion dollars like that gets people's attention so kind of overnight. According to people that i spoke to at these distilleries they were just getting flooded with phone. Calls from americans mostly who were like. What does it take to make my own to cuba. I want get in and amigos which george clooney was. George clooney brand. Not even that good. It's not bad tequila. But when i heard a billion dollars no no when i started seeing the the trucks with george clooney riding a motorcycle through the gme like really him. And that's what people said when they saw kendall jenner riding a horse video fields. It's like there's this very specific imagery and the celebrities are trying to tap into foot. It's an interesting question right. Like it's not necessarily their imagery. It's not their culture. So that's where you run into those questions of is this cultural appropriation. And and what happens when like thousands of years of history are being reduced to like a marketing campaign for a famous person. What happens when negra at then. Lola beltran are replaced by third eye. Blind guy and kendall jenner totally elon. Musk we got tesla's accua now to pop. Jesus we'll have more after this break. So my friends. At lemmon of media have a new podcast. I'm excited to tell you about called. I'm sorry i'm sorry is all about apologies. And how they play out in the court of public opinion. "Back in the nineteen eighties tequila did not have a great reputation in the us. People remember that they had about experience with tequila. Karlos marina owns lot l. Tenure distillery which makes his oral tequila among others coming into mexico on spring break and raking in them feeling terrible. The next day. Carlos is a fifth generation tequila distiller. His great grandfather started making it back in the eighteen. Hundreds carlos grew up around a garvey and tequila. It was in his blood but when he tried to sell his family's tequila in the us he kept running into the spring break problem. People thought of tequila as cheap as a mixer. Forty years later things could not be more different. Tequila is dominating the spirits market in the us and celebrities. Like george clooney rita ora and dwayne. The rock johnson have been launching their own. Kilos like crazy. This is the indicator from planet money. I'm stacey vanik smith to sales are booming. Money is pouring into the industry but inside the seeds of that boom is a bust a very slow growing bust. This message comes from. Wherever you go get seventy five dollars off your borough order at borough dot com slash indicator support for this podcast and the following message come from capital group home of american funds. Their fundamental research helps you say i can make more confident. Investment decisions visit capital group dotcom american funds distributors inc. Back in the eighties. Carlos camarena was a man on a mission to change two kilos reputation in the us to do this. He and a handful of distillers developed a plan to create a market for high end. Two kilos one sip at a time they would meet with bartenders and restaurant owners across the us and tell them a story. Carlos would talk about his family about the police go region of mexico where the navy plants used into keila are grown beulah zeros of bluer gubbay growing on their zone light. Those plants grow under the sunlight until they are ready to harvest and then they are slowly cooked to bring out the sugars. The birdies low cooking process in order to gently. Convert the sergeant the sugar. They we use stone distracted use of the government and then that precious ungava juice is distilled in these little copper pots carlos reckons. He's told the story thousands of times over the last forty years always ending in the same way with him pouring a glass of his best tequila and asking them to take a sip. The initial reactions were usually. Oh this is not tequila and my answer was well. This is real tequila. Not what you consume that spring break slowly but surely tequila gained stronger and stronger foothold in the us market right now. I think a lot of folks right. Wow there's just like to kill everywhere. Macwell actually tequila has been the fastest growing distilled spirits category in the north american segment. For something like fifteen twenty years. This is marie cerita guyton a professor at the university of utah and author of tequila. Distilling the spirit of mexico cerita says efforts from distillers like carlos and others helped change the image of tequila from body shots and bad hangovers. To a more refined high-end drink associated with tradition and great care can like bourbon or scotch. Cerita says she realized just how much the market had changed back in two thousand seventeen when george clooney and randy gerber sold their tequila brand koss amigos for a billion dollars. It was just like what the what like. Wow these white dude's mandated that much money in the tequila market. What does this mean. Probably not coincidentally suddenly tons and tons of american celebrities were jumping into the tequila market when there are johnson nick jonas. Oh adam levine. Acdc Puff daddy p diddy. Apparently the backstreet boys demand for tequila has gone crazy and that is creating problems because the supply of tequila has these natural limits for one thing says sereda. Real tequila has to come from navy. Plants grown in the police go region of mexico. Tequila has a terroir kind of like champagne. So the tequila boom has a lot of mexican and american tequila producers scrambling to lock down as much acreage as possible in official tequila territory. They started just buying land by land. I land that of course is driving up land prices which is pushing locals and other industries out of the area cerita says some producers are also harvesting plants before. They're ready making bad tequila. There's this pressure right to get the gubbay out as best possible. You know so folks have been using pesticides and chemical fertilizers to try to get everything to kind of move quicker. Finally cerita says there is a labor constraint. Harvesting in gob plant is dangerous. Takes great skill. The people who do it even have a special title. He minorities but there are only so many moderates and there are millions more plants going into the ground every year so producers are hiring unskilled laborers. Who don't always know what they're doing. Cerita now worries that the massive popularity of tequila is destroying the tradition of tequila that the land is being irreversibly damaged and the local economy is becoming totally distorted. I asked carlos camarena about this. And he says yes. There are definite drawbacks. Too tequila boom but mostly. He says it has really helped his region. We have full employment in the area and it has provided a season where you're leaving for everyone involved including the farmer of the people who works in the fields for the people that is working in the theories in designing labels in producing morals everything.

I haven't spoken on it yet. To goddamn tragedy all around. This drunk driver was 32 years old. She said, fuck the police. She down some tequila and wine during a podcast just hours before she killed a cop in a hit and run. And then boasted about carrying a knife being pro capital punishment and she's now facing 13 charges and 15 years in jail. That's not enough. This bitch's name is Jessica bavay. She posted a one hour and 51 minute live stream on her Facebook page Monday evening. And she spoke about what else the trial of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd and she slammed the cops in the video she's seen vaping and drinking and at one point, she washes down the contents of a red shot glass with a bottle of snapple. And she says, cops are signing up for potential death. Before she signed off the footage with saying, fuck the police. Now in the video, she boasts of loving guns because they're pretty. And she makes rants about being pro capital punishment. And then hours later, shit had got behind the wheel of her Volkswagen and intoxicated and with a suspended license shocker and she struck and killed this New York police department highly office the name anastasios sacos. 43 year old man, 2 o'clock in the morning, a married father of two young children who was redirecting traffic on the Long Island expressway, following a separate fatal car accident.
