disappointment and prevailing the rolling mats who lead the national league east have won 5 of their last 6 games and they're now 11 and four At Credit and investing Yeah sure Barry I think when I grew up I grew up in a town called osh we just outside of Toronto And growing up I didn't really have any influences that were in the business side And so as I was kind of progressing through my childhood and through high school I sort of was very interested in commerce and how that works So my first job really was working at a corner store where I used to stack what we would affectionately call Canada pop bottles but you could also do bottles I did that If you're in Minnesota you might call them pop bottles as well And I used to sweep out the parking lot as well That was sort of my first job at 13 and I was very interested in how that gentleman ran that store And my brother in law actually ran a small lumber yard in town that I worked out as well And so I was very very interested in how businesses worked How that operationally worked not just the actual element of working at them And so I kind of looked at people who had progressed into business and most of them in Canada at least had commerce degrees So that's how I went to queen's commerce And you come out of school you end up at Goldman Sachs pretty early in your career right Yeah actually it took a bit of a short stop first So back in the day when I was sort of again trying to explore how to get into business I noticed a lot of chief financial officers in Canada had a CPA or back then a CA And so I actually spent two years of Cooper's and lie brand working on my CA and Kennedy have to intern at an accounting firm So I worked there in corporate audit and business investigations which basically back in 1989 90 did a lot of the bankruptcies in real estate So in fact one of my early experiences was working on the Olympia New York bankruptcy with the reichman brothers So I have to imagine that's a useful set of skills to have when you're trying to decide hey am I going to see a return of capital as well as return on capital for this particular credit Yeah it's certainly taught me how to understand how you're going to get your capital back if you will I think that I think by early formative years in terms of business was one of skepticism because 89 90 was at least in Canada was going through large recession predominantly in real estate Had overextended itself building out and canary wharf at the time I recall cross collateralization I was kept from all the banks of course which was part of what we discovered And I think my formative year was started with a lot of skepticism which probably led me into credit as a result So from Cooper's and libraries and accounting how do you make your way to fixed income and Goldman Yeah sure Well I realized that the accounting profession probably long-term wasn't going to be for me And most people would move on to something different I had some friends who worked over a Goldman Sachs which frankly I didn't know a lot about at the time I walked across the street in Toronto ended up working to their initially in controllers But eventually worked my way into being a credit analyst there And very shortly thereafter I moved down to New York and spent actually most of my career in New York working for Goldman And always on the credit side So when I was doing my research into your background you have family members who are investment investors and pensioners into the Canadian pension plan how did that police teachers pensioners things like that Did that impact how you thought about doing your job For sure for sure I think that the greatest takeaway for me and I take that to my job today is know who you work for And for me I have a 91 year old mother and she would say to me every week when I talk to her how are we doing Because it's her money right And so my mother my brothers are about 18 years old as me so they take the Canadian pension plan right now as well and my sister So they're all beneficiaries of that And on top of that my brother and my other brother they're both one was a teacher one was a policeman so they also benefit from the Ontario municipal employee retirement plan and Ontario teachers pension plans So they're all beneficiaries of these large pension plans in Canada And I think what it really did is made it real It made it real for me in terms of the money that I was investing the sacred trust were literally 19 million people are giving you money to invest on their behalf is a sacred trust And so I used to say to the team at CPP IB that that's a special place to be and it has a higher duty of care in my mind because think about if you lose $20 million that's like the entire city of peterborough contributing to CPP for a year So that really puts things in perspective And I've taken that with me now because now I work on behalf of many beneficiaries And fiduciary is across the globe And I still think it's a sacred trust And it's a privilege to manage money Quite fascinating Coming up we continue our conversation with Mark Jenkins head of global credit at Carlisle discussing the state of credit today You're listening to.

"Yeah you know which which reminds me that poor guy on on instagram. Who's telling everybody going to buy them all jerseys. They liked that post at the dodgers. Win the world series. He's gonna be out lots and lots of money. Yeah so much money. He does that every year and he does it with a different team. Every year. it's been the yankees was like yankees last year before. Actually yeah yeah well this year. I think he's really going to be in trouble. Because i have a feeling. The dodgers are probably gonna win the world series. It's pretty good chance. It just got better is what i'm saying. Okay so like you said well hold on. The blue jays picked up right. Handed pitchers jose barrios and brand hand The nationals like. We said they dumped salary. Sterling marseille and yang gums. Go to oakland. Lester goes saint louis. Schwaiger goes to boston. The mariners you're saying made some subtle moves which is true Diego castio moves from get. They got him from the race for a reliever in a prospect. He's ryan pitcher in case you didn't know those. Are you talking about earlier. Yeah that's right and you said he's not there anymore. Yeah i still. I still have kiara up. Let's see what is this area right now. The ego castio. Or does he like to something one. Seven two two seven two two seven two. Well and i'll i'll tell you this. Though he did blow save the other day he gave up a walk off home. Run to join hyme in the tenth inning against the rangers. So there's that but anyway okay. It's gone up now. Yeah they also get abraham toro and Joe smith cat subtle. So we've noticed. Those people are one thing. I i did laugh by joe smith as golly. I hope his pitching his as boring as his name. First off and has been. He has gone three innings. Not giving up a hit or a run or walk. So that's been outstanding. Um your that's pretty good. This was a big deal for mariners. Fans trading away kendall raven rafael montero. People don't want him gone for awhile. He's been terrible..

"Podcast time for our weekly a train of thought segment and now we bring in the guy who doesn't mean every week my friend sal licata from wfan and s and. Why new york's out. How are you great. Can i really. I look forward to this a little meeting once a week discussing some topics that we normally discuss on the phone through tax. Anyway so this has been fun for mobile. We had breakfast sunday. So it's not like you know something's happened though assets and that was more about the baby the baby the baby. We need to follow up because last week we went off about. Mlb with the seven inning. Doubleheaders your point specifically about when they do a split doubleheader make fans pay for two games when they're seven innings and i'm still i still think. The runner on second is the dumbest thing to start the tenth inning. I've ever seen and now manfred. I guess the all star break said that's going to go away next year. Maybe he listened to the podcast. I don't know but i feel like you know. Progress was made after last week. And i think it's a surprise because most people doing we talked about it. Doing these overnights in getting getting a bunch of calls or visit while yelled about it. You know it's not going anywhere. I don't think people expected that change. Either of those two roles moving forward so thankfully manfred who seems to be tone deaf and not have a clue about what fans actually want in major league. Baseball to have got it here. Now again. there's gonna be labor dispute issues and maybe the players are going to argue against it. They don't wanna play nine any doubleheader. That's obviously really wanna play seven doubleheaders but nice to see manfred. Say that baseball is not looking to make those two things permanent and we give back to actual baseball games. The run run second. I hate but i could see teams in players being into that. Because i guess they don't wanna play fifteen inning extra games. But i'm sorry. Baseball is not seven innings. Change that one had to change. A baseball game is not seven innings. The most now. I'm not going to disagree with you with a runner on second because the more i got to watch the malls all right. This is just cheap but it does add instant drama. It does create when another words. We're watching a regular ballgame yankees the tenth inning and she was like all right whatever. Wake me up with something happens. In this case your ready woke up watching it. 'cause you say all right there's a guy at seconds something is gonna happen here one way or another. So i like that kind of added drama or the instant drama but ultimately the more i watched it the more the cheap in the actual game. And i'm excited for baseball being back to nine inning games without being boys second in extra in see i much prefer the fifteen in game. When the team runs out of pitchers and maybe a position player and i've seen games entering switching the leftfielder and the pitcher or something like that. I like all that but i did see now again though. It's baseball so they can ever just do anything right did then. They still have to get in something. That's ridiculous and now there's talk about banning.

"Can a floor manager. A floor manager thing is like when you're acquiring these guys if your goal is to have them play a role if you expect them to be role players if you expect the most important thing that they do to be to be willing to learn be willing to learn and change and adapt and grow you have to. Have you have to scout human beings because not all people are ready to do that and one of the things that the giants have done. Extraordinarily well is find people who are willing to do that. Work right willing to listen to. The giants have The giants have a coach. Ellis anakin. who's a woman. She's the first yemen in uniform to be a major league coach. And you know this year. She's focused on you. Know she focuses on kind of systems with the giants which is important when you have fourteen coaches. But she's also been focused on base running and you know the main in sight of the sabermetrics revolution and the data revolution around base. Running has basically been just give up on base running right. No need you could. Don't try steal You know guys who hit home runs are more important than fast guys etcetera etcetera etcetera. It's just sort of gotten marginalized which by the way is insane as the eighty five cardinals when you think about what they did on the field. Vince coleman would chop the ball and get a single then into pitches. he'd be on third. now anything can get this guy home now. You have to bring the infield in the way we jay with the new way that extra innings are played with a guy starting on second base in the tenth inning. Like look at how much pressure that puts on the pitcher. Look at that like starting on second base. That's why you see a lot of these extra inning games. They don't go nineteen innings like we've seen before they're done in they're done in eleven. Why because there's somebody standing on second base why that's so valuable to have if you had fast get on and then steal obeys. You're now putting why. I i went to the padres. Dodgers are the padres cardinals game a few weeks ago. And when i when you to see the shift from from the stadium as opposed on tv because you really don't get the full breadth of watching the defensive shifts on tv. 'cause they're so focused on the pitcher and the catcher and the strike zone. You say to yourself man. There should be a coach on every team. That's teaching guys how to like half bunt and push it down the left field line. If you're a lefty like like a free throw you should be hitting a thousand of those that everybody but like these guys are brilliant. I think about guys with you. Know like tire woods with a golf club who can like juggle the ball twenty nine times and then take his swing and put why can't people why can't dudes just do basically a just get. It passed the pitcher and get it towards third base in between thursday's that's a hit every single time every single time. I mike you know 'cause the nearest game standing behind second base. Yeah i think in the base running area the most impressive thing. I agree with you. If i could just watch the eighty five cardinals all day i would be. I would be thrilled. That is the most fun kind of baseball like watching the kansas city royals when they won the world series so fun and just very fun however the most impressive part to me about the giants base running this year. And you know. I i put it into their first base coach. Who's also sort of base. Running specialist is that they've got austin slater stealing basis. They've got brandon belt stealing bases thirty four year old first basement who has two legs in half a knee And the reason is that they are focused on identifying every opportunity so they have the data to figure out when it is that. If they go they'll make it rhyme and they they use that data to guide the players and the players are open to learning and that kind of systemic thinking is. What leads you to get the best out of thirty four. Your old donovan. Solano or will abass so stealing a base is not simply about ross because fast guys get caught especially. If it's about the jump you get is jump. It's about the jump on the pitcher more than the catcher. It's a jump. Combination of if brandon belt is going to be running it's because they're not holding them on and the pitcher or the pitcher is in the wind up instead of the stretch with him on first or the shift is such that they're going to have a hard time covering second And if you put all of those things together what you get is you know. Austin slater a guy. With average to slightly above average speed has six or eight steals right. And that's not nothing. That's another little piece that you put on the pile it's like. The giants are focused on not messing up things so we get it right. Get a little bit more right than next time. A little bit more right the next time. It's what makes it fascinating. It makes you even though you know. We're we're again. We have our own allegiances to another team. I think that is good for baseball. It goes against the swing as hard as you can swing your launch angle as high as you can and try and just hit the ball out of the stadium. Why because is that better for baseball. No it's better for my contract. Thirty home runs. You know. I can be a joey gallo and hit one. Ninety and hit thirty home runs in eighty. Nine rb is and get a massive contract like it's all sort of it does matter aren't whereas we should explain if if the at home audience doesn't know this randy you and jason are a big cubs fan so the whole thing. Your whole thing is yeah we just about mitch. Wild thing williams. Oh my god. Don't you literally will do anything for jerome walton. I'll do anything for al further back berry foot. I'll go out. Larry go classic keith. Moreland larry jerry hill just going to say the names of guys to say name reports fun to me jamie moyer. Let's take a break when we come back. We got some crickets jesse. What's happening that that classic trip you not use you expect in the middle of of may end of may and i still got my hat from from this past week so luckily i'm doing okay but can't say the same as before the cards but let's talk a little bit about The last week. Or so and i guess the first takeaways just You know the team kind of criss crossing and the team really having their first test out on the road. I know they went out to san diego and and took their lumps but As as far as going to chicago and to arizona. How'd you just kinda summarize the last weekend and what you've seen from this team that is kind of looked like a different team at various points and even sometimes on now back to back days. Look completely different team at times this year. Yeah it's been. It's been pretty weird. We've talked to the first few months about the team about how you know. Some of these matchups. They've gotten been pretty generous. Pretty you know welcoming for them getting out of last place teams and now you start to see them meet a lot of these titans another divisions this this this all the padres during the white sox Monotony other in arizona. Obviously was not the best team. But it's it's been kind of a question if they're if they're putting teams in by place beating up r bad teams and you know. I think it's a literally rescinded again. Hang with some of these teams. But it has been a little bit discouraging. I guess he them get swept by the padres and only got one pretty close win against the white sox and lose to to the cubs. So it's been it's been a tough go. I would say recently but a lot of injuries have kind of popped up. And you see guy like tyler on neil return last night kind of provide that offense if funds. They've been looking for so It's been it's been a weird stretch of a couple of weeks but they're hoping that with guys starting to kinda return the go trump right where they left off in april and ophthalmology associates. Your dot com your identity dot com or three one four nine six six five thousand. Tell them chris rabi sent. You set up an appointment with the best set up an appointment. Get your is taking care of doctors. Doctors had ophthalmology associates. Yeah what do you make the outfield situation. Obviously teller a neil getting dylan carlson. Back in the mix. But but but i would you describe what they've gotten collectively from the group of outfielders to this point. It's so hard to to measure. Just because i really had a small handful of games of their opening day. Outfielder is they've only think it's less than ten or so games of a toddler. Neil dylan carlson harrison beta around that round that mark maybe of games the three of them together when they when those three have been together. It's been a really solid outfield. Your hair's mater had had a nice showing had a little bit of a of a skit when he went up before right when he went onto the i l. But dylan's been playing okay. He's he's kind of been struggling to play a little bit lately and tyler neil has been the other night season ever since he came back that i i'll send so I guess the question is what can justin williams and lane. Thomas provide so far. It's been a little bit less than a less than auspicious but yeah justin williams has some internal numbers in has some qualities that make him a dependable option. He's just struggling to get the bat on the ball and get in the air a little more him to see and lane. Thomas had some struggles early in the season when it came to actual defense but those teams have kind of subside. A little bit. but. I think it's a little telling when when lane. Thomas is playing center field at the beginning of the season. Dillon was in right now. Still lane and right or left so It's been interesting conundrum for them. But once i think what most encourage them when to have their three main guys healthy. It's been a really nice outfit for them. You wrote about yada your molina. Who last night helped the cardinals to a win in the tenth inning. It's it's pretty unbelievable to look at yachties numbers and what he continues to do. Year after year zach and what he continues to do with the volume of play behind the plate. What stood out the most to you and your first year covering yati fulltime. Well yeah most. Incredible thing is that he's been obviously a great defensive catcher offense. It's kind of lagged the last two years. But he's doing this season just an absolutely silly manage sleep almost anything that comes his way. He's not he's one of the higher swing rates in the majors. He's his his chase. Trade is up up up there and it's just it's incredible. He's just doesn't really have a game plan when it goes to the plate of them display. And it's really working for him. i don't i don't really know what to say. The fact that he's just us getting a lot of batted balls and he's really getting a lot of things. Swing added even some of his flyouts of his pop out. Seem like they're going to say they are. So i mean he's always been above average offensive actor but this is remarkable. Does this season. He's played its best offensive season of his career news. Now thirty eight thirty nine. So it's been pretty remarkable follow and the fact that he's doing it while basically everything that comes his way is pretty crazy. Yeah i don't even know how you would go about to begin to describe his importance to this team. You know for a team that has certainly sputtered at times. Offensively just how important. His bad has.

The first week of the season last year that was delayed. You know we had those You know the marlins and the cardinals had those covert outbreaks. And you know the schedule. A weekend was already up ended. So yes so far. There have been a couple minor blemishes. Her i should say minor blips on the on the screen but mostly pretty good so far are in. I think we'll take on eventful this year. Yeah uneventful and I guess the flip side of that coin scott is that with all of the maybe time and energy spent Thinking about for fans especially whether or not the season's gonna start and if we're gonna have baseball against the flip side is well. We aren't sure about like a universal d. h. in a rule like that hanging in the balance would be maybe a bit more of a storyline in years past. Yeah it probably would that. Yeah i think that in this doubleheaders that are seven innings. Extra innings starting right away in the tenth inning or with a runner at second base. "Yeah it does. Help i step. There's no doubt about that of interesting. What's interesting now though about that play. Is that the catcher. Has to give the lane for the runner right. So if it's if it's even just a fraction of a second later if or if the Runners is down the line Just a little bit more then that now to play where the catcher can actually catch the ball and and then you know Not be in the way of runner. Because if tyler wade is running. He's got a faster first step. He's down there a little bit faster. If he's like. I don't know two feet. Further down the base pather a foot and a half further down the path that comes into a situation because the catcher was definitely over towards the base. It was he was. Isn't tyler wade or to pinch run for someone. I'll just talk. I'm not saying that was a decision. I'm just. I'm comparing them as as individuals and athletes the situation itself. If it was someone a little faster it might have been the bang. Bang play tyler. Had already pinch run for someone. Yeah i was calling for tyler wade there. I'm just a that in that situation. A faster guy may already got in so it makes this conversation almost because it could have been bang. Bang could have been either way so for the next question. We have it from eric heredia and he was talking about today's game. What is the benefit of today's game ending like did nice and tidy three hours. Forty five minute game game time. Yeah lots of kids will grow up remembering this day this historic day in baseball history when a baseball game ended in less than four hours. Thank god the blue jays didn't have to actually earn the win talking about opening day with extra inning rule. He's pissed about the extra inning rule and because the extra earning rule was supposed to make it so games and sooner and he's like well. You're already playing a three hour. Forty four minute game. What's the point. I mean i understand that. And then the next day the yankees played. I think like a three hour and thirty nine minute game or something like that. So fast to today was quick. No those are not facts. Those fat today was very quick though. Today was under three hours. I believe which is what i like to say. Even though the this this this goes back to the point that the major league baseball is just throwing a bunch of bullshit out there saying it's making the game faster and it's just not true. It's just not true. This was a covert just trying to eliminate the the games that go fifteen to seventeen innings or whatever thirteen fourteen and they just don't happen often enough to make it make a rule like this that changes the however many games that go into the tenth inning. It's just dumb. it's so it's it's trying to put a band aid on a problem and trying to make a a a pleaded of public like we're trying we're making a game faster because now we're ending by putting a guy on second base and giving them an opportunity to have ncaa college shootout style victory. It's stupid it really doesn't. It does not work for me. It really doesn't i agree. This is major league baseball seeing a forest fire and pissing on it thinking. That's going to put it out. Of course they do the wrong thing. I do though think sometimes especially when you get into those fourteen fifteen sixteen games which are rare they become slogs because the innings have nothing happening because guys are fried. So if maybe if you want to start this rule in the twelfth inning would you be down with it. no because it doesn't happen often enough to make a diff- when it does happen. I don't want to sit there like we had to sit through training four our game. Anyway you remember the game against the cubs. Eighteen innings against the chicago cubs like four years ago. It was a sunday night baseball game and enter the home. Run to win it. No brett gardner. That was the same weekend. It was in wrigley field. The eighties played an eighteen inning. Game on sunday night baseball we had to record a podcast. That's something that's fine. You list at your perfect storm for. Here's my the thing is though that game it got to like the thirteenth inning through the eighteenth inning and every inning was the same everyone was trying to go up there to hit a five hundred foot home. Run to win. That's every day never never yankees game ever but the extra innings became so monotonous because it was the same thing. Thirteen fourteen fifteen sixteen seventeen eighteen. There was the same inning every time you tell you. Let me tell you why. Let me tell you that then. Then fix baseball then. Then i'm not saying forget because it's broken but then make them do different things. Don't go out there and try to swing for the fences every single time. Get on base manufacturer. Run do what you gotta do to scratch a run across. Why is that. Why is that the sports problem in trying to change what we're doing with the actual sport and affecting wins and losses. Because now we're manufacturing a run fabricated out of the clear blue sky. There was a runner on second base. Nick nelson in his first appearance of the the twenty twenty one season young kid gives up a double that the rightfielder probably should've caught and now we're talking about him striking out the side and the game is over. He lost it because that runner scored get get outta my face with that. Dude.
