"Am also a licensed contractor today, and I employ people. So people can be rehabilitated, but they got to have the right mind frame. And by God, you can not give people. I mean, if you can't do the time, don't do the crime. And if you're not going to force them to do the time, then you don't need to be in that office. And you don't need to be in that position. Now, we're talking about giving billions of dollars away to Ukraine and I think you hit the nail right on the head there. We need more prisons, we need more rehabilitation centers. If we're ever going to correct this country, but our government has a cookie jar and they will not put that money back into America. Hey, Ron, let me ask you. Hey Ron, let me ask you a question. And great points all. Let me ask you. So I don't know how long you've been listening, but earlier we were talking about, you know, something that speaker of the Tennessee House Cameron Sexton said, which is basically a lot of these folks just you can't fix them. So I want to drill a little bit down if you could help me run. So you sound like a guy who is not the norm, right? So you've got all these prisons. You've got all these guys in prisons, a gang banging inside the prisons, and so forth. What is the difference between Ron and Illinois, who spent two years in a California prison, got his life together, made that decision that he wanted to make something of himself. What is the difference between you and the kind of guys that you were describing and how do we make sure that the guys like you, Ron, get out of prison, but we keep the guys in prison who are gang banging inside the prison and will certainly continue a life of crime outside the prison. Well, there again, I think, just sermon of character number one. Okay? You've got to be able to, before you just release these guys, these guys got to be able to work with counselors. They, you know, you have to put something into rehabilitating somebody. If you're going to college true, rehabilitation. Like I say, just can't lock somebody up in a cell and let them out for an hour a day on the yard and call that rehabilitation because it change is not rehabilitation. Right. I mean, that's just not. There's no education there. There's no schooling going on there and there's nobody showing these guys any love. Now, with that being said, there are some of those guys that are going to be repeat offenders. And they're going to be career criminals. And so when it comes to being a repeat offender or being a career criminal, then you have to have stiffer sentences, but you have to dump that money. I mean, us as Americans are paying billions and trillions of dollars in taxes, but none of that money is being dumped back into America. And Ron, I love your spirit. I love your comeback. You are a great story. And I really appreciate you sharing it with us here on red eye radio. The phone number, 8 6 6 90 red eye, 8 6 6 9 zero 7 33 39 will return next. Get in touch with

"Just basically in the middle of a community that's been carved up. In fact, Nashville has had the same congressman for two decades. Jim Cooper, a moderate Democrat who had survived previous redistricting battles. We've been a state capital that spoke for itself for at least 230 years. We've been democratic for longer than anybody can count. At least a hundred years. So in January, after maps were approved, Cooper had had enough. He called it quits. I know how politics works have run probably more than any living politician, and when they stack the deck against you, you're wasting your time. And Democrats argue Nashville could have been kept whole. Each congressional district in Tennessee needs to have about 767,000 people. Nashville has 715,000, meaning lawmakers could have just added one extra midsize city instead of splitting it in three. But Republicans have defended their maps, saying they followed the law. Tennessee House speaker Cameron Sexton says he thinks the split will help, not hurt Nashville. Well, I think, you know, David single gained more representation. He never hurts to have more people and Washington fighting for you. But Nashville native Odessa Kelly worries that whoever is elected won't be fighting for her. She's black and gay, and she says these maps will weaken the power of black and brown voters. There is no Republican that can accurately represent me, my values and my morals and my thoughts. There's none. There's zero, right? And what they did is tried to dilute that. Kelly is running as a Democrat in the redesigned district 7. The one across the railroad tracks from Krispy Kreme that's probably her best chance. According to census data, out of those three newly drawn districts, it has the highest percentage of black voters. I'm not going to lay down and take this and neither should anyone else who believes in the fundamental ideas of America where everyone has a right to their voice. It has a right to be heard because that's essentially what they took away. But it will be an uphill battle. She'll be facing Republican incumbent Mark green, who is running for his third term. And if the Republicans master plan goes their way this November, they'll control 8 out of the 9 U.S. House seats in Tennessee, helping the GOP in their push to take back

"And we'll start with a $50 billion hiring freeze report that Apple plans to slow the pace of job growth and spending in some departments. That sent the stock sharply lower midday erasing $52 billion from its market cap by the end of the day, it's just the latest tech company to cut back on hiring plans. Vimeo today joining the names names like Alibaba and Tesla and planning layoffs while alphabet meta and Intel are just some of the company is putting a pause on payroll additions. The Apple news seem to have an impact on the broader market as well with the major indexes all giving up gains in the afternoon. The Dow swinging more than 650 points from high to low and closing down one tenth of a percent. So as we get into the heart of tech earnings, we're going to get more warning signs like this for the future. Dan and Nathan, is it it's one thing to have layoffs in the pause hiring. Should we make it? This is being pieced out. First of all, welcome to the desk here. This is kind of fun here. We're going to have a little fun today. All right, so you just called it the $52 billion layoff question. Again, we don't know what they're going to be asked this question when they report their earnings next week and they're probably kind of piecing this information out. They don't want it all to come out. We've been talking about for a month or so since Microsoft pre announced the existing quarter because of FX headwinds. So sometimes these companies like to get the information out there, little by little, so then when basically with a report and guide that's not all one big bomb, if you will, and again, you know, you think about Apple, the way it's acted over the last few weeks, it was up 17% at its highs today. It literally traded to a penny aware it was on June 1st before it sold off after it had a little run off of its melos here. And if you think about what the S&P 500 did over that same period of time, it was up about 8%. So Apple doubled the performance of the S&P 500 off the loads, and the NASDAQ, the NASDAQ 100, was up about ten or so percent. So I think investors were maybe looking for an excuse to lighten up when you look at the day chart and you see that headline and went down in a straight line here. But again, I think this is probably a better way to get all the bad news out, little by little than all at one report when they were very likely to guide lower for the at least the existing quarter. No, that's a good point, but Bono and I have to ask because this is Apple we're talking about here. You know, it's one thing to put Vimeo in that campus lowering hiring or another smaller tech company announcing layoffs or something like that. But what does it indicate that Apple is striking a more cautious tone? I mean, this is a company that has really withstood its economic challenges, whether it be the pandemic or even the financial crisis over the last decade and a half or so. So if they're the ones pausing hiring, what does that say about the rest of the economy? That's a great point. And it's been company small and large. I think some of it is kind of floated another radar. There's been some lagging in terms of periodicity in terms of company saying, whether it be Netflix or Tesla, et cetera, taking that, hey, we are going to slow down here, but I think Apple Dan mentioned it has kind of been the bellwether. It's been the safe haven. I mean, all the superlatives you can just kind of pile on to that. And it's been like that perceived margin of safety. And it's come across as being very impervious. And now that they're saying, actually, you know what? This macroeconomic situation actually applies to us as well. I think investors are taking notice. Now, I do think it's a good job on their part in terms of getting out in front of things and being transparent and kind of like setting the tide for what is to come. But I think so many investors have taken safe haven there, regardless of what's going on in the rest of the market that now Apple following suit and saying, hey, this applies to us as well. I think yeah, if you see any continued weakness in Apple, that is really what's going to lead to this market rolling over in this short term bear market bottom, probably trending much lower. So then Julie, if you look at this news and just all of the other headlines surrounding apple, do you read this and say, hey, maybe apple's not the bellwether that it once was, and maybe we should look at this and value this potentially differently. Well, I think we've been hearing consistently from tech businesses that they want to rightsize their businesses. And it makes sense, right? Because they've all been on major hiring sprees, capital has been very loose for them. So it makes sense. What I think we're going to see broadly for the market is this type of business loss job losses that are happening at the white collar mid tier employee. I think the lower income hourly wage employee still has a great job and the outlook remains strong, but if you think about your average big business, they have one person running Facebook. One person running Instagram. Some kind of teenager running their TikTok. And they're going to consolidate that to just one person who's going to run all of their social media. I hope it's a teenager because they actually know what they're doing. And I think that is important implications, right? Or the economy writ large. Yeah, I was going to say that teenager probably cost them a little less too. Jeff, is there any indication that what we're hearing from Apple today, Dan mentioned, maybe it was almost a way to kind of pre announce by potentially leaking. I mean, we don't know who the source was. Bloomberg cited people familiar with the matter, but potentially getting this kind of less clean news out there now so that when earnings come along, it's already in the market. Do you expect to hear is more tech companies report over the next few weeks or so more indications of this through the likes of both big and small tech. Yeah, that's my guess. And that's what we've been talking about for a couple of weeks on the show really. And this is typical in terms of the development of the business cycle. You know, you tend to see new orders come down in PMIs. Tennessee housing data weekend, which is exactly what we saw this morning. And then you usually start to see an increase in initial unemployment claims. So we haven't really seen that yet. The labor market continues to be strong, but you start to get indications from companies like Apple, other big tech companies. So this is not unusual given where we are. And just speaking to Apple specifically, you know, this is a stock that we've talked about for a number of weeks and if not months on the show that it's still trading above its average price to earnings ratio. And it's earnings have yet to come down. And I think that that is perhaps the next shoe to drop for this market. And the next shoe to drop for companies like Apple, it doesn't mean that they can't relatively outperform, but in terms of the stock marching higher from here, it could be difficult. We talked about retail sales on the show on Friday, you know, nominal retail sales up, look pretty good, but real retail sales. So adjusted for inflation are actually down. So people are spending more.

Third down and goal. Mayfield's gonna throw his clothes. That's a touchdown, Ted, go lab. We're open up the back pages of the playbook today. Now, don't be jealous type, huh? You know, they eat a couple to give one and you knew they would punch their way off the ropes, and they did. And they came back to score and that made it 72 7. And then at that point, all the haters came rushing right back in right back in, like cool. Brown's got off to a nice start on the road. Except Italians are going to come back. The Titans are going to walk them down. The Browns are not going to be able to handle the pressure of a big lead on the road in a big game. Wrong check. The very next play Mayfield.

"Is a member of the Tennessee House Representatives. He is a black man. He is almost 70 years old. He has seen real racism in his time. No doubt he made a speech the other day at the Tennessee House of Representatives has got a lot of it a lot of attention. You know, that reminds me we should replay that Van Jones clip from earlier a bit later on. As he said something very sensible. But rather than steal his thunder here is here are the wise words of one John DeBerry in the middle of what has been referenced to own several occasions, the civil rights movement and you know people continue to refer to this, but I saw it. I saw men and women Sand with courage and integrity and class and they changed the world. They changed because what the world could see in them Woz the lie that was being told about them. I am one of those individuals who walked in back doors because the law said I had to I'm one of those individuals who wrote on the back of the bus on the back seats that were not cushioned because the law said I had to. I went to the water and drank colored water because the law said I had to Went to a school where everybody looked like me, and the country was divided and segregated because the law said that I have to. So all of these things. We continue to refer to other things that me and my generation lived. We saw it for ourselves without reading it in the history books, but we lived it. And then obviously he gets to, uh, some of what's going on today. When the riot started in, folks started burning stuff down. That's what my father took my arm and we left. We left because that was not what we were there for. That was not what Dr King was. Therefore, that was not what others who are famous in the Civil rights days were. Therefore this was not peaceful. It was not part of our movement. And it only hurt everything. My family raised money and sent my dad to Washington for that march. That man stood there and said that he wanted his Children judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin. And all we do in America right now, Let's talk about color. Every issue. Every issue is about race is about color instead of a sitting down at the table like men and women of common sense and common justice. And understanding that our enemies are looking with a greedy vigilance upon us as we tear our sales apart internally. They have been watching us for 50 years, preparing step by step by step by step. For us to kill our sale. Um, I know you've been trying to get us to play this for a week. Shawn. Why have I just heard that? That is incredible. Can we elect him President for the next 15 years. Greg's a little on in years, but that doesn't seem to be stopping anybody else. Younger and both candidates. Oh, my gosh. There is wisdom. It remains. It's it's a shunted off into the corners. He's absolutely right on every bit of that. Oh, my gosh. What a what a great man. Well, and he's just frustrated as I am where you are. I mean, he's like he's exasperated. Like, how could this possibly be happening? The full speech he did was over 10 minutes. I think something like that. I only saw kind of like a seven or eight minute version of this and this is just a couple pieces from from that. Yeah, I know we have a couple of worked the pieces and I'm tempted to play him, but He like we I'm sure feels like we're being dragged away from The just America we've all been trying to build. We're being dragged away from it. 100 MPH by these so called, you know, social justice advocates well, that stuff their race garbage in the rest of it that stuff there at the end about how our enemies around the world. You know, have been working for this for a long time, Right? Right on Boko, both sides tearing us apart. Yeah, Yeah. What was the other thing is going to say? Oh, yeah, Well, I just I hope voices like his are increasingly hurt. Check out the great new swag like the new masks at Armstrong and getting dot com. You're.

H. A. S. Alex castallanos longtime Republican strategist and commenting for us as he does on the on campaign two thousand twenty Alex it it's it's interesting another debate another primary it appears that Bernie Sanders seems to have a a combat a commanding lead in the guy his I don't know that it's commanding but he's won the first three primaries is it time for Democrats who don't want burning at the top of the ticket to go into panic mode the I think it is it's time for Democrats to really narrow the field they're trying to figure out the okay Bernie's going to go into the convention with a plurality or perhaps even a majority of delegates choose our alternative to burning in there too many candidates they're they're splitting the anti Bernie vote and it looks like because of that Bernie may even win South Carolina coming up this Saturday and that would be monumental that would mean the the end of Joe by the latest survey we see in South Carolina has Joe Biden twenty seven Bernie twenty three percent that's four points but guess what half of that survey was done after the last democratic debate and in that half it's a dead heat so this debate tonight Byton doesn't perform well that could be the end of Joe Biden and the nomination of Bernie Sanders but I mean let's look at this for a minute if I'm mayor Peter Amy or Elisabeth or Tom's tires at what incentive do I have to throw in my chips in and walk away and say somebody else needs to be the the moderate candidate I mean I I can't see that as long as the money holds out I can't see that any of these folks are going to walk away they're not I think you're exactly right Joe and why would they they've got super Tuesday coming up why why quit now right they'd love to see the other candidates drop out each one of them but they don't want to do it themselves this is the gun fight in a fistful of dollars they're afraid to shoot each other because they want to be the last one left standing so nobody's pulling the trigger on this thing and what does that do that keeps the field divided and remember this thing's going to go like a freight train middle most of this for the democratic nomination will be over in the next month yeah I'll I would would agree with that now last week everybody was gunning for for mayor Bloomberg in this debate is everybody going to target Bernie Sanders tonight I think a lot of people will usually Elizabeth Warren I doubt she will take on Bernie very much strategy is look I may not make it Bernie's ahead of me in my lane so I'm going to do some blocking and tackling for burning and clear the the field for him so you can expect her to go after Bloomberg another people but everybody else is going to be focused on Bernie who's the alternative to Bernie that's the jump ball these candidates are going to be trying to get and you're going to see Bloomberg I think bounce back he the second half of his first debate was much better than the first figured it out and you're going to see a a tougher I think even slightly more approachable Bloomberg this evening so I can't say he's Tom Hanks or anything right but the but the passion seems to be with Bernie on the democratic side although I've talked to plenty of Democrats who are scared to death of a Bernie trump election in November they they feel like it's not just going to go south for Bernie but it's going to go south for the for the Senate and even maybe the house of representatives I've talked to a lot of Democrats over the past week and I can tell you Florida Democrats are petrified above the things burning is said about Cuba and what that'll do to the democratic ticket all the way down the ballot Pennsylvania Democrats are petrified birdies against fracking that'll kill us in western Pennsylvania running for Congress in swing districts Michigan Bernice for Medicare for all the take away your union health care plan that you fought for Democrats up there are petrified he's going to kill them down ballot so Bernie Sanders you could be a McGovern style collapse for the Democrats but he has locked up that pro Castro voters says other carcasses he's doing well there all my goodness Alex castallanos for ABC news thank you so much I appreciate you spend a few minutes with us today where we live in interesting times there is no question about that Joe Elliott in here for Tony Cruz twenty before aided newsradio eight forty WHAS.

"I haven't had a conversation with them where they're proposing any kind of red flag law I think there's members of the Democrat party who have filed legislation I don't really see when we come a red flag what does that mean exactly well I mean I think it means different things to different people my my understand is that limiting someone's ability to own a gun is that correct yeah that's where you're going well that's where he's going with them sure yeah yeah they're very ation some use mental health and other things as as part of the red flag but I don't I don't really fused agency moving in that direction I think we're a pro second amendment state based on legislation I think that's been filed so far I don't think he ever rises to the bill to to make it out of committee at this point says one the slippery slope so was I mean we all know that mental illness plays a major role in people in in these active shooters but then again who determines who's mentally ill I guess that's a subjective thing I mean you start saying well you're you're right wing fanatic we're gonna take your guns wedding people afraid of that kind of stuff well even into let me look at orders of protection restraining orders now easy those are to get right so what stop someone from using a red flag call to do something of that nature as well so I think there's a there's a lot of issues out there no I think if if we want to really look at different things no law all to to protect people I think we need this is a longer discussion but go into more of a truth in sentencing model in really prosecute people who are stealing guns impress you people who are carrying guns illegally you are supposed to have met their fellow really put the teeth in the in the sentencing guidelines instilling people served thirty percent of a sentence you know and enforce the laws we hams which using and for some but make them tougher to where you know you don't want to still gonna have a car because you get caught you get found that you can be serving hard top not not like ten days yeah bigger the Tennessee house Cameron sex and speaker Preciado very much thanks for your time Sir have a great day all right we could take a quick time out we back in a moment.
