Payment trends making noise: What we learned at MPE 2021

"Today's episode we will be recapping. Our thoughts on merchant payment ecosystem n. p. is the event for those in the payments world. Historically it's taken place in berlin but in line with all other events With the majority of twenty twenty and twenty twenty one m p. e. was a virtual event this year So like to kick off the podcast with talking about what was the thoughts on kind of the the virtual or event. How did it compare to previous years. Did you miss the the nice berlin vibe. I'm i'm i'm i'm happy to start off. Think it's a it's a bit of a is also pros and cons with its. I think ultimately all of us and sounds especially to myself who are more sales focused commercially focus in the business. Were we're looking forward to the next face to face events that's for sure for us Socializing berlin going for drinks at the end of the day is certainly something that we look forward. But in saying that it's been it's been an interesting Pasta months especially in trade around. Because there's been a few pros to some of these shows actually quite a few It's already has been been back. The overall we're looking forward to going back to to the shows But it's been it's been a lot of learnings. I think we've experienced from the virtual. Try to just one last thing to add. I think you raise a good point that the platforms of kotok. Certainly there weren't there in pre pandemic world so that's pretty huge pro because we can start using that and other shows and i think we might start seeing a lot on its micro shrimps popping up signs big face to face shows that that might happen on an annual basis but it makes it a little bit tricky for for for us who Eventually presenting these shows because the type of content that you have to present in virtual environments the type of discussions that you're having in a virtual environment a very different to the discussion that you'll be having face to face environment. It's you have to be tayla What you're doing in women's comp- residents who have fifteen minutes slots and that's that's all you got. That's the The idea attention span that you get from your audience in the day. Battling everything from e mails to call to putting a little station in between a whole bunch of meetings that happened. The day competed in the old days where they're mocking a whole day. Because they're face to face gray. And i mean i guess in in general are historically what's been the format of m. p. es at similar to you know a bunny twenty twenty or what makes it such a an important in big event in the world of payments. I think i think from from n. P. e. standpoint one of the big One of the big attractions for russes of business to attendance is is the fact that it's actually a That's on a smaller scale. Compared to money twenty twenty minute reading twenty covers a variety of vote of payments gang Again to t- who risk for example whereas whereas m. p. e. is focus showed from that perspective is one is the attendees. That's ten show us. And our our direct contacts you ultimately were wanting to engage with and speak to a long time those margins good much good new shows that are being sold at Whereas a long time there's a law content allow really useful stuff can take on board. Take back to that headquarters. Whatever is an actually utilize information and not get the noise of game Solutions insulted abso-. I think actually that this this much broadening physical better than someone like us exactly. I mean i think you've you've raised a good point. That's also an opportunity for some of these shows going forward in that a lot of great content is being generated. But it's not being reused a lot of the time you go to a show if you can't attend to toll oxygen ten wine and you miss out on the second tool called the second topic whereas because it's virtual it's being recorded it's on the right platform. They're almost creating payments netflix. Could you can just station will be watchful. The talks to rewatch the ones that into you. If accents which is which is a big opportunity on on the one side so from the merchants attending shows it was proved to be great successor. Difficult for us to tell because we're on the other side. Yeah i mean. I think it from my perspective speaking on these virtual events. It's really hard not to be able to see the audience. And i think you know every one of us who attends the has been attending these events. Mrs being able to really see people and engage in that aspect. It's been difficult. Some some positives negatives but he i mean hopefully perhaps next year we can go back to the physical events and who knows maybe though tak- hybrid approach. But i mean getting into kind of mpe this year so took place between the twenty second to the twenty fifth of february. What were some of the key takeaways for you. Both i mean there were quite a few key takeaways but for me one of those important ones and we might sound like a bit of a broken record because it's been one of the topics But it's definitely being the just the overall rise of digital payments ecosystem and it's not not digital payments in that Online in a digital environment. It's it's the stepping away from a traditional omni channel approach and embiid digital payments in face to face type environments introducing. Qr codes into at based payments for micronutrients for example are becoming very popular and having these solutions available to everyone. They've been available for years and other parts of the world but europe in the us other a wasting economies. Just never they never took them on. There was never a priority. And i think because of what's happened over the last year We were now really starting to see the impact of digital. I approached payments can't versus nominee channel. Approach where you have digital on the one side you have face to face appoint the other. It's actually everything's digital advocates it to that from a first Was the consensus that this was primarily driven by cova and in the past twelve months this push towards truly digital almost like a digital omni experience. So what types. Yeah yeah. I think i think it was a it was quite impressive because everything happened. Lost year everybody. Wins with virtual loss. Jared lockdown and there was a lot of talk about digitally native and there was a lot of toll cabal it's a digital first approach online payments this huge shift towards ecommerce and what we saw was a massive shift to ecommerce Ness of shift to the merchants and the pavement plays. Who were in the right position at the right time to capitalize on it so i think they saw me spike in volume. This'll great traction. But this year. I think what we've seen is is more of a liberal divide in. That's a lot of other players out. There have adapted their solution to take advantage of not only the rise in traditional e calms but also the point to sail payments bringing them online bringing other plays into the realm and it was a it was showed that actually look done in the industry within a year and there was really a huge transportation in how payments businesses bow their product.

"The price hike. It seemed inevitable. I mean it's still cheaper than netflix and considerably cheaper than hvl. Max i would say if people ask me whether or not get disney plus i tend to say like star wars and marvel. Do you have kids at which point. It's definitely word this the sheer volume of content. I'd say it's ok. Okay no for sure. I mean for me. I've got i've got kids. So disney plaza lock. I think anyone who's got a family. This is this is our ramaz. Get a among the many different streaming options that we have nowadays Let's get into the shows. I know star wars near and dear to your heart. So let's let's go there first. They announced or talked about ten shows. Let's let's break out. What are some of the new shows that you're excited for low because of out vehicle order Talk about soka. I dawson brought the character life in live action for the first time in season. Two of the mandalorian and that that's a lot like a backdoor pilot for this show. It's just like suggested that she had her own adventures. going on. this was not a surprise. It is a delight though. It is an interesting we. I think we talked about this earlier. The you know the fact that not to get too deep spoiler as they chee. She was offered a role to mentor. Baby yoda no. You really need to go somewhere else. They felt like definitely had that back door pilot vibe to because like i'm sorry i'm off to other adventures. I've got my own thing. Got to deal with and allow that did seem like a setup for its own show. I'm actually late my own. Tv show salena catch trade this game and it gave a pretty clear idea of what she was up to not to get into splutters between between that and the rebels finale. From a few years ago we have a good idea what her objectives are for this show. Yeah we don't wanna get too deep into spoilers. Maybe we'll we'll devote a whole episode of that later on this year to speculate on what what that might be both water. Somebody other shows that that were announced. It was the next big one we knew this was coming for a long time but they talked about a little with last night and give us a sense that or confirmed that it was filming next march And that christian hated christiansen was returning as dark later. Very very exciting news. That one definitely took me by surprise. tactic territory hidden christmas activator. That's that's interesting. As opposed to advocate skywalker. Which would suggest that he appeared in flashbacks as anikin. But saying he's vader would suggest maybe that he'll appear in four seasons or something that is unclear. It's definitely it's intriguing. Another property was with a character. That's near to many star. Wars fans hearts landau gets his own show yet. These were ten on the ground because we don't know if it's going to be live action or a cgi animated series. I feel like donald glover should be involved. Because he was so well received solo so fingers crossed that he will be returning and then there are a long list of other ones kind of run through them really quickly because we unfortunately only have so much time on this podcast okay so there was the ropes quadrant movie directed by patty jenkins of wonder woman fang which is really exciting. That's super cool. That'd be a fighter pilots. There's the bat batch which will be a follow up to the clone wars at those cartridge orig- use there. There's adore which is about caffeine door from roquan. There's tyco tgi movie which we still don't know what that's about our coop concert raiders of the republic. Which is set around the time. Line of the mandalorian and could be about current june because she became a marshal of the new republic but again that remains unclear star wars visions which is automated shorts from abbey craters. That's really cool quite different the acolytes which obviously is that almost excited with the malls because that is set in the era of the high republic which is two hundred years before the phantom menace. And it's like about some sort of a dark site warrior and it could reveal stuff about the Era some different cool. So those a lot. I know being a super star wars fan. I want to get your opinion on this. Is this too much star wars. It certainly was too much reward announcement. I think parceled out over several years. It should be okay especially since the movies will be quite so frequent. Like i remember when it was only like six months between the last year and solo that felt overwhelming with tv. It's a little different as so you can kind of watch out. I'm at home in a more relaxed environment. it's a lot of star wars. There's no escaping that. Yeah yeah yeah i mean. Brian made a good point before we start recording that you know a lot of these might be one off shows ryden. Obi wan will probably be a one-off sled that that kind of makes sense that they'd wanna have this pipeline but it was a lot to digest all in really what was about thirty minutes a thirty minute presentation just for the star wars section. They're just kept pumping out one announcement after another rapid fire a lot but also i think that's partly a function of the fact that they're no conventions this year star wars celebration was

"And one that I had to listen to again, not too long ago. Is Number two fourteen. Never to fourteen is the Disney Tarim Recap from twenty eleven. This was one of our I S- cruises together. And it was special on so many levels of first of all we had about five hundred people with us on that particular sailing. I went back and listened again and I had forgotten that Nolan would all. Was On that show with us and he has since passed so it's wonderful to hear his voice. We had a surprise proposal on the stage to which makes me go back and think and we got the Walt Disney theater. I. Mean we had the big room because we had all those people and the proposal. Reminded me of the fact that this show has brought together. So many people in terms of friendships or we know people who are now dating or who are now married because they met from the events or from you know the meet ups and so forth. So that was really cool to think back to that. But the number one reason why I love this. Much Is Because that was the cruise with the Lou Roast where we got to roast Lou. Listening to the retelling of that is one of my very favorite moments. I mean how many times do you get to see Liu and Italian boy shorts? What? At this. Pardon. No. I wish this was a video show not oh, the cool part is Tim Yeah. There's a video of it yes and talk. Out On, Youtube. The. ROASTS it. Best Served Clyde did this for you and I tim because we did the show I had him totally convinced and by the way this was all deanna his wife came up with this wonderful plan. Put Me and Tony Caggiano gave us a challenge to make sure that he never saw this coming. So I think all the things he's doing to me now like the whiteboard you don't was on it and all the two things that I'm going to tell you about some day after they actually happen is probably all revenge for this one moment. When the roast occurred because we had him convinced that we have to go we've got were pressed for time you have to wrap it up. We gotta say goodbye because we they need the theater earlier that day were trying to keep him out of the theater. So Tony had to lie to his wife and his wife had to lie. Indiana had the lie to Lou and I mean it was all crazy just making sure that he didn't ruin the plan. So what ended up happening was as I was convincing them that we we've gotta go gotTA, wrap up the show he and I were on the stage and we were about to say goodbye to everybody or so Lou thought and I got to stop it and say. The Magic's not exactly over yet and. A. Lovingly, Deanna came up Tony came up lose brother came up. They had some wonderful things to share. About on cello. And it's all on Youtube right now. So I think Loo- lovingly hopefully put that in the show notes so that people can actually see the roast and if not, I'll post it in the box people group which I might do anyway because it's so fun to watch. Out What's Nice is that I'm GonNa cut all this out of the show anyways now. But what the other beautiful thing is one of my favorite things of that night was unfortunately Glenn Whelan couldn't be there But he put together a nine minute video clip about what it's like to be loom on Jello in the parks Oh dear, and he was playing the part of Luang Jello in the parts..

"I. Remember you come we had. We all had tables in the perimeter of the room in in in this early mouse fest and you came over and you're like. You know I'm Tim. This is the book and I, made it and I remember I'm like I am not going to let you move on down the line he farther like. I grabbed you and I took you because my publisher at the time had a table across the the way they also publish the Hidden Mickey's Book and I'm like you need to meet you and you too crazy kids together can do not let this guy go because i. just believed in an I still do I still think that guide to the magic is such an incredibly beautiful and more importantly unique guide to guide book and I always said to you and I still believe it that guide to the magic four kids is is almost a misnomer because. Not only can kids do and play and and get so much out of it because there's so much to do with the book, but I think in adulthood and it's this big huge like I still have my copies along with all other stuff that you've done over the years sitting on my shelf. This is like episode twenty, nine all over again. Book it's called. Magic. But that was. Many other mini books to like sled like the little mini books. On my gosh. Well. You know what? Not to hang out a new version of guides imagine coming but I am. Planning on having new version of those old books again. Look. So I, still have. Let me blow the dust off this guy to the magic autograph and Sticker Book The guys are the magic the lost journals and to make a new one. Yeah. Guide to the magic. "What's funny it's you're supposed to get sentimental. That was I anti. I went through the list because I was a little I saw a lot of top. I'm going to going forward. I have top ten. Obviously you cannot do because you don't eat at a lot of places but move on. We'll goodnight folks. Now I was going through the list that I. It was funny. I was I really did these many that's cool. But then I did have this This little. Anxiety. Feeling of me, talking me like looking back and say, Oh, show like one nineteen, which was attraction theme song. And I had this vision of I'm going to say low about one of my favorite shows was show one, hundred nineteen when we talked about attraction theme songs and you'd be Do you weren't you weren't on that show. That was Becky we did the top talent site actually look through and I did listen to a lot not the whole thing of all of them listen to them all against that was nice but the to I we did recently shows five eighty two. Just. My Five, ninety three. So not that long ago. We talk about a top. Upton Disney heroines and our top ten Disney villains. But. The special part was the special guest. She did not tell me who they were going to be. Just, staring might be a few surprises. Tell Becky who those guests work is I thought that was so awesome. I have no idea. No, it was. For Top ten Disney heroines. Thought was I wanted to i. knew that the show was not about Disney heroines in terms of who are the best heroines onscreen and it's more about the the women and what they represent and what they portray in the impact that they have on. Not Just Disney fans, but but other women young old and I figure that one of the best people to come on as somebody who over the years would have and continues to be impacted by these characters and the roles and the trails on screen, and so I brought on my sixteen year old daughter. Cool Yeah becky her name is Marian and associate you may have signed it. and. Shut up shut you were never taken over by. Already got a plan and Saiga I'M GONNA. Meet you again and so my son was obviously on the top ten Disney villains and chill five, ninety, three that's very slow. Yeah. Against those are a lot of not just because of the subject matter I love the villains and I really loved actually the heroine's is I'm all. I'm all I love the. The female characters in Marvel. Marvel and Disney, and how they're getting their do and all that and I've been there forever. So that was love's on them but it was just. Being with the kids because I remember them all and they were. Little, tiny tiny kids and. Me Sitting with the Marion Indiana while you guys went on tower of terror because. Little chicken exit. Timmy wasn't going on either but I company this time. So that was fair. And hanging out and turtle talk with crush with your with your little. Little. Four or five year old son designs that was lot of fun but. So that was just a lot of fun just to get the. Little. Be a part of the Monticello family for just a little bit Tim. You've been parlors I'm gonNA cry again, you've been part of the Monticello family since the very first time you and I met in that little mini ballroom at the swan as so many years ago when little sweet little timmy foster. Walked in with his home. Version of his very first integration of the died to the magic book tucked under his little arm. Barry. Book is on my stuff I know and I remember I tim I, remember it like it was yesterday..

"We've been blessed to be able to have these experience in go on these trips, but I've really really really appreciated the to bring those experiences to others. So hopefully, they can explain some to. Yeah the. The the recap show especially Japan was was on my list and to quote my favorite show ever on television we have to go back, Kate we have to go back God I. Love. Japan just so so very much. We're going to Italy in just a few months and we have other plans London and Paris were coming for you as and we will I think we'll go back to the Asian parks. Oh, I did. Very quickly, I eventually did get my interview with Kevin Foggy on the show that was still five nineteen just. So. So I'm glad you're looking that up and paying attention to what I was saying at the same time because sometimes I wonder spinning plates, lots of spinning plates. All right. Little, Timmy foster if you're still awake. Bedtime. It is. Now finish up to the these are two little ones but these these are both a lot of. finish. Doing well, I mean, there's seventy eighty market talk about the ones I highlighted. No wait. There's one. Three in one shot because I feel like this is the last chance I'm going to get to talk. The way you to work. But My. D. Twenty-three three story which I guess was maybe the year after the one you did that's my I was in the same room with Robert Downey junior story. which was great. I usually fail to mention so that the whole story. Is that the whole story I was in the same room at Robert? Smell. I stopped there I said, oh. Yeah. I was in the same with Robert Downey junior and then I walk away. Like when you say the same room is it men's room hotel room like ballroom like what can you give a little more context? I neglect I usually leave out the part where there in one thousand, nine, thousand another of my closest friends in the very sabre Robert Nine in the same room known as the Anaheim Convention Center. I don't mean there's certain details. The Bad Hit while lead the what I tell you one thing I had on my list just because I a lot of fun doing it was when we did the top ten myths of Walk Disney. A lot of fun. His on. Occasion I called the Library of Congress to track down the hall of Presidents. Presidential. Seal in the carpenter. And feel I- bunket thoroughly, and I'm very proud of that but But the two that I wanted to end with. Them in quick succession not too long ago. And the subject matter was cool but it was more about these Si Becky Dawson did you know I was coming back? No. Okay. Did you I was coming on now all I got was. Come on I want you buddy what you and there's going to be other people I sent her the exact same email just. Copied and pasted. Oh, I, see you in all caps. "In Disney land and at sea and we've we've yeah it. Maybe we'll do that. Maybe we'll have to. We'll have to figure out a way to to recap some of our our favorites events to but that very much was it's on my list of some of my favorite events that we have ever done before has never been done and can never be done. Ever again, exactly I mean some people have tried to recreate it in the convention spaces, but there's nothing like being in the exact same place in being in the mask room and being in the Treasury area and yeah. So that that show with Jim when I've listened to that takes me back to to that really special this video. There's a few. It's probably not on facebook share. It might still be on Youtube or somewhere I think we did a couple of recap videos or this little video clips from that night at the adventures club in some of the rooms I remember Glen I in in front of the idol. Yeah. Lots of debt. So I have a picture of that I'm sure you do. I'm reading. All right. So Tim, what's next on your list Sensing, we're getting near the. End this show but five more so. I have a list of eighty, five show I'm running out. Go to I have a a twist on this list of a few of the. The Best Times where you kind of picked on me besides the pickle never would never. I didn't know that that was the thing is a thing because that's a different show making up the rules as we go a huge list of those. Yeah. Well I think I can start the ball rolling and then. As you remember them. But this goes this just goes to the heart of what is it you say the more you pick on grief I give you is directly proportionate to how much I love you. Well. Let me tell everybody how much Lemond Jello loves me. In show what we talked about how you yelled at me to make do with the pickle from the pickle barrel. An show five, forty, three. Things to do when it's cold outside which Akshay is one of my favorite shows because it's it was just unusual because it's never cold there won't is so but that was. You called me A. Fifteen year old girl. Nag I listen to that one. Well I was relating a story about how I was actually so cold once actually had to go into a store and buy sweatshirt and. You've thought that was funny for some reason a new. So as well you're acting like a fifty morale I was over whatever it was compound. It was let's what you said. The grief is in verse. Inverse proportion to the love in your heart. So as I said before stop loving me so much because. In, episode three, Forty four actually had this on this for a couple of reasons but..

"Tony Men Dyke I. Hope You're still listening Scott Otis and Glenn Whelan Ohio. I miss you so. The five of US went to Tim. I can see exactly where we were sitting in the booth by the window are waitresses are servers name with capped with the? K., who was amazing like I remember like she's a what are we doing here and I'm like okay. So I've got this little hand held recorder we're just GONNA give. I had never done it before I had no idea but the idea. That came to me was like if we're going to eat and the idea of the show is to make people feel like they're sitting here with us instead of eating and then talking about it later. Let's just record it and see what happens and you guys like wait we're gonNA, just record ourselves like eating and chewing on like no, that's not it. It's we're going to talk about the whole experience and how we're feeling and what the server is like in our instant, you know unfiltered reactions to food and shown number one, twenty, two in June. Thousand two, thousand, nine was the birth of the live dining review and the mountain you mental exponential expansion of my waistline and shrinking of my bank account. That's where it all began. I remember. Feeling. Little little duped at the time. I thought I was being taken out for lunch and you aren't. Just. For, your show, like what is it? Was a lot about your member ever. We can bring it. This wasn't really a show this like goes in your outtakes. or or near misses I think it was the same crew more or less. And we tried to do a live review at flying fish. Do you remember that? Yes, yes I do and. It did not work. Politely declined. Because at the time, it was like people you know when you walked in. People didn't understand what you were doing or what the heck I was doing it for. They do like maybe we. Just sure and they felt on. Which I can understand. But the best part was. I hadn't eaten at the I. You know I have yet to this date, each flying fish that was the closest..

"DROP It was. This is why I don't do video not GonNa do it. I'm glad that you still get punched in the heart over that because it really was special and Yeah I. Remember when when they asked, you have at the table and walked off with your kids and. That's just the people that they are I mean when we when we had dinner with them beforehand and it was just me, you Deanna and and Richard and Elizabeth. We spent six hours with them at dinner and you remember when we walked away from them afterwards, we said good night we were going to be on her way to the cruise the next day. I turned around we unite Indiana walked towards the front go get our cars. They were staying at the Grand Flynn. Said we went to different directions and I turned around looked at them and they're holding hands just quietly walking together and you can tell that they are such genuine people and so in. Love. And so connected and so humble like. Humble. Again, please understand the meaning of the very brief story I'm going to tell Of course it now, August I. Don't know a few weeks ago a month or so ago. However long it was she called me and like again when it shows up on your phone, you're like Oh my And the whole time we talk I mean, it wasn't about anything in particular was it was a a social call it was around Richard's birthday and the whole time we're talking I kept on thinking about how just normal Simple happy genuine people that they are. There is no celebrity or bravado about them at all. It's one of the things that makes them. So incredibly endearing and I've interviewed on the show two or three times I know. Back on show eighty was the first one. Again, we had the episode three hundred that you mentioned, and then there was one of the time on show one, thirty, five, I think when the. Might have come out and by the way if you have Disney plus you need to watch the boys and bring your tissues with you because it's a, it's a fascinating fascinating documentary..

"You can hear your elation it is coming through it. You sound like Sounds like you meeting Spiderman. Story to you were so excited about interviewing her and it comes through in your passion comes through and I listen to her voice all day She is such an amazing talent and she just kind of opened up to you and started talking with stories that things that you weren't even asking and she was elaborating on it and it was a really cool interview and it definitely was one of my favorites but this is also where your ability to tease. Started driving me crazy because you sent me a text that morning and you said I'm interviewing somebody that I'm really excited about and I'm like who you went I'll tell you later and then. Seriously so was like, okay no tell the sounds fun. No, you'll. You'll see. So later on I, guess after you're done I got another taxed. It was such a great interviewed I'm so happy type thing I'm just paraphrasing, but that's but you did not tell me who it was and you would not tell me who it was and I think that's when you discovered that that drives me crazy. And he immediately stopped right. So? I. Mean Stop Teasing. You know no no no I. I think. The beginning and they're clearly is no end. So yeah, I had to wait until it came out and I was like, Oh, now I know who you were talking about every time you're texting me all day long. Were you deliberately teasing becky because that's not nice. I'm going to call you out on the car. It wasn't. It was a tease in terms of like a teaser trailer like you want to get people excited for what's coming I'm fine Ryan. Just wait till. You hear what I have planned for our next top ten see that's an example of it it. I'm not gonNA sleep now for a week. I'm like we've ever done before and is going to blow you away I. "You're not the first path this way, nor shall you be the last so? yeah. We around father's I. Remember was around Father's Day and it was and and Tim the Japan was actually on my list to not only gone because I love Japan? I, love every episode we do together. But I do remember that I remember sort of talking about the personal feelings and you going with your daughter and that same type of thing it's not about the places that we go. It's about the people that we go with. So a lot of times that helps. To craft those memories You know in looking through the list Again, I'm going to get a little tangent here and there and I'm sure this is not a I don't mean to. To steal anybody's because. For me. Look again when I speak at conferences and to businesses and individuals. I say this all the time. Spoiler you get it for free 'cause that's what it's worth. But I think that no matter what business you're in, you're in the relationship business and this show for me. Has Been less about Disney and more about relationships and it's relationships between me and you listener and me and you guys timid Becky and me and the people that are my friends and everybody who listened really is a friend who we've met yet or not I can talk about relationships and completely separately but it is about people like the show is about people if you. Know. I've never I've literally never. Monologue. D- Yet I've never monologue a show. I've always had somebody come on and again I do this show as a fan I I do a show that I would love to listen to as a fan and always motivated by my personal love of the brand and the people and the fans, and along the way I've had incredible opportunity to. Meet people interview people, visit their homes, become friends with them crews with them. You know have dinner with them. And it's again like I'm so hesitant to do this because I never wanted to be about sounding like I'm name dropping or anything else. But again, I do these interviews for myself so that I can share them with you and in looking you know sort of forget them. I've been looking down this list. In in chronological order as I sort of take us back on this six hundred episode journey. I have to sort of sneak in a bit of a twofer because if you ask me and I get this question all the time either favourite interview person that you've met impactful moments you know top keeping present company out of this conversation obviously becky and Tim, but to the people that have been. So. For me for a couple of reasons happened. Not Too far from each other on show eighty and an show one, twenty, seven and show eighty was the first time I interviewed Richard Sherman. And show one twenty seven was when I interviewed Julie Andrews. And each one has huge meeting for me. For different reasons, I will tell you very quickly the story so again. Show eighty. So. This again, we're talking probably if my math is correct somewhere in two, thousand six, this is pre. Like the Internet being what it is now it certainly Pre d twenty-three determined three Expo Destination D- Disney, plus all these different things and a lot of the people that I wanted to talk to were not necessarily..

My episode I was on email the other episode I was on email. I. Wanted to sort of mix things up a little bit. Yeah exactly. So but of course, I took that to heart and I thought you know what I'm GonNa come up with the ones that I really enjoyed listening to and what has kept me around for thirteen thirteen years. "Top Ten's because this too was a bit of a leap of faith and leg this episode like again being transparent, you don't always know how people are going to react and respond, and this is one that I was like. I'm GONNA just sorta go with my gut. I'm not sure of anybody's GonNa get this but I'm going to do it and I was all admit now I was petrified like this is where I lose all three listeners because nobody is going to listen to show seventy five, which was the top ten smells. Of Our on my list, took one off my list too. But see that's it. Right. So it's on your list because we can all instantly relate to that. Nobody's GonNa understand and I remember I. deliberately used the word, the musty water smell like nobody's going to get. What I'm talking about like Louis you're a Weirdo nobody's riding pirates under. The rest of us and thinking but remember Becky this was you know two, thousand, five, thousand, six Zo still very new Mike who's GonNa understand what I mean by the musty water smell and you did and you do and still to this day because of the way podcasting works, people might find the show at five, ninety nine and they go back God bless you and you listen to all of them. That's Lou but go back and go I just listen to top ten smells and I totally get it because this is the smell that resonates with me or they'll share personal story because our olfactory senses are the ones that are most closely associated with memories so. I obviously I didn't know that at the time just sort of got lucky but when you think about. Certain smells the instantly can connect to a place where person or a time or a sentiment. Or. What? I wasn't. Scott. Rome burning is is a very PD Scott. So if you WANNA if you're sitting in your house and you want to return to a spacious earth, all you have to do is get out of really PD Scotch and smell it and it's Rome burning a C. Rome. Burning to me is the whispering canyon so. But see we all had pink barbecue but it was it was it was it was one that I was hesitant and fearful that people just weren't going to quote unquote get it. Now I understand we are all like minded like hard and we get ten. We might actually have to go. We've never really Repeated a topic but that might be one that we need to revisit because are so many new smells and places and opportunities that did not exist back then. Well you know it's funny. 'cause I I absolutely had that on my list. I feel like that's that's in the top ten Mount Rushmore Hall of fame. And but what I remember oddly about it, I'd probably member all wrong but. This was what I mean loo- you know I look up to you I is you and I wish I could be just attentive. But. This this show is like man you God 'cause I by recollection is out. I went into the show thinking. The deliberate..

"So now that was that was I the whole story about him being Disney I always find fascinating and that was right there I did a I don't think we ever did one but I I did in celebrations I did a little top five ten Beatles Disney connections being one of their some but I digress. But that that's why let you were. taught to me. So. Amazed Now, I go to helplessly a talk about meets Seo I feel so bad doing this but. This is all about you. Good. It is all about me. Now well, actually one thing There are a few shows that we did. That I'll talk about now and they were all very special because they all they revolved around. The same kind of thing. I don't know if you WanNa give me give episode numbers out. For example. Episode Four Ninety Four we talked about ten sentimental corny things that we love. Five fourteen we did our top ten emotional experiences. Those shows I. Really Really Love Because that that led us get. I mean it's one thing talked about scary things and you know places have snack and all that kind of stuff but. Talking about these shows was really it was really great because you and I got talked about what was at the heart of why we were doing this and a first place like what it was that we. Loved. About Disney that brought us to this spot which we know you know. But all of your audience feel the same way and that's what makes Disney different from so many other places. But those are very special to me when I did those because it was A. It was a way to reach down in deep connect with Disney. But Best of all, the share it with my pal it, it's not just me talking about it like. You know we could connect about him and there were some other emotional ones I'm saving for another entry, but I always love.

"Big Interview and what I mean by that is the first time I had somebody from the Disney Company actually a Disney legend come onto the show and it was somebody who i. Had actually. I had actually spoken to when I was first starting out researching my trivia book and wanting to get access to. Either media events or just help from Disney because he was leading. Pr, at the time and he's Disney legend, Charles Ridgeway as fate would have it. After I started doing the show he had left the company by then he came on the show I tracked him down in a non stalker kind of way he came on the show and was my first real interview and over time we became good friends he became a Disney legend. He also wrote a book spinning Disney's way and he actually I introduced him to my Publisher. So we shared a shirt. So we had a lot of social interaction beyond just the show as well. So Disney legend Charles, Ridgeway back on show number five in two, thousand, seven I have to include as one of my top ten. I won't even break my own rule I'll to stick to that one uncouth. There's one of my top ten because it was for me. A milestone because. Not that I had interviewed people before but it was the first time I had an interview for the show and somebody who I think was probably the first. Well Yeah I think I interviewed. They might have done a Disney legend on. Interviewed Ralph Kent on Mouse Tunes back in two thousand and five but sort of the first Disney legend somewhere end up becoming friends with for years and would make multiple appearances on the show. I will throw in dizzy legend Charles. Ridgeway at show number five as the first of my top ten. Becky Charles. Ridgeway was the head of publicity, NPR Disneyland and Walt Disney. Tim Foster Disneyland is park that exists out in California? It's a lot like Disneyworld, but slightly wait. CALIFOR-. California let's California. What is your next on the tarmac next my next one All right 'cause I love to hear the stories of Disneyworld. The people don't know, right Number nine for me was something. One of the very first ones that I actually did listen to was the one with Mary. Ping about the the Beatles break-up. Okay. Paying I I had may not marry me. I had I. Didn't know that story. I had no clue that he signed the paperwork at the Polynesian. So that was one of the ones that I thought was really intriguing and interesting because it was the melting of of my love for music and my love for Disney and. Having a little piece of information that all that all went down there was very cool and very intriguing. So that piece of the story in hearing it from her was really cool for me. So that's my let me just help out here. So Tim, the Beatles was a very popular band in the nineteen sixties. John. Lennon was a principal in that ban. And so on. Show one three. One, three interviewed. May Pang who at the time that the Beatles broke up at the Polynesian that's where John. Lennon. Signed the papers they were they were boyfriend girlfriend and she came on and talked all about. That the entire sort of relationships you add how on out all happened at the Polish roads that the attractions that they road and One. Of the things that I really loved was when she said and please correct me if I'm wrong but it was something to the effect that John Lennon knew that everybody was having a good time because.

"Some stories of some things that we've recorded together excuse me as well as things that we have done together. Look there's no pressure but this really it's show six hundred it's a milestone moment I'm trusting the two of you. What was I thinking but that's okay. We're going to go in feeling good feeling positive and Becky becky. This is your first top ten sort of this and let's let's take a moment to acknowledge the fact that you have him on the same show for the very first time in six hundred. About time I says you. Know, why are we doing? On. Well, ever own show. It's like he's been trying to keep us apart for something Sarah. Milestone showed or bring you together to really celebrate it. What's he afraid of I? Know we'll find out in the next little wolf accent our. All. Right. So I believe in ladies first and look I tim. You'll be happy to know that in typical Lou, top ten fashion not only did I not create any rules but I'm not don't to make any up as we begin. Usually Tim loves when I practice start this right so I have none cratered. You can talk about anything episode that you feel you enjoyed should be on the list but these are top ten shows top ten moments from six hundred episodes and five hundred years I still believe my dad raised me right ladies first chivalry is not dead. So becky mackin please be our guest. Okay. I guess we're starting with number ten. My number ten is your number one. Let's talk about that for a second because we. It was all of like six minutes and thirty seven seconds or something of that that nature of you introducing your brand new podcast of Luan, Jello from such podcasts as I think you named three or four others but. What I really enjoyed most about that first that first podcast issue spoke so much slower than you do. Now. It's not slower. Rose McGowan Claims Alyssa Milano Made the Charmed Set Toxic AF

"There's is daily top. We have so many feuds to talk about today starting with rose McGowan claim that a listen the Llano. made the charm set toxic A. Okay this whole thing started as a political view, but then it got very personal rose accused of throwing fits in front of the crew on the set of charmed rose even says she cried every ten shows renewed because a listen made the set. So toxic in a statement to news listen. Milano said hurt people hurt people commenting any further doesn't align with my wellness plan we have not yet heard back from rose or or Warner, brothers, which produced charm. So a lot to unpack here. Again, it started off very political was a Democrat argument but then rose went there why he thinks she went there to bring charm to behavior. Look, hold. One hundred percent and if we're fighting and I'm holding a grudge against somebody I'm pulling out every receipt I don't care it. One Thousand Nine, hundred, ninety, nine, hundred. This is an audit. We're going to have this fight whether you like it or not. I guess that's true and also she's trying to discredit a list right? That's her way of saying like you shouldn't. You can listen to. Elissa because she's not as relatable as you think because listen to this she may two hundred thousand dollars a week on charm and was still throwing right she didn't get paid enough. It's like a way to discredit. I don't know. That is also. To your argument, sometimes, people will buy into that and be like absolutely. You know what? She's right rose you. If she's FELICIA's really as bad as you say that I'm listed work she says, but then other people can see right through that to say like obviously you have a grudge obviously, you don't like her you've made that very clear. You said it in an interview you do not like or. Do we really trust your opinion because it's obviously very biased. I just feel like this has become somewhat sticky with rose like we can just expect her to just go off and sort of sale of these things and quite frankly does anybody really care twenty years later if the listen. Milano through set like threw a fit onset of charms like I just don't think that's relevant to the conversation like none of us were there. None of us really really cared that much about how she behaved obviously, you want to be respectful to the crew and people that work really hard. To put on a production as we all know but we've all had bad days on this show I just feel like if in fifteen years, one of us were to be like well, she was impossible to deal with. It's like, okay. Then you should have said something then I feel like it's just so kind of in line with WHO rose is trying to be now and I'm not saying that she likes her and I'm not saying that she feels like she's credible or that she believes in anything she says. Every time someone says something that has nothing to do with you. That doesn't mean you need to go and jump in on it. And I, I hate to say this because I'm not away from everybody's experiences and I always say this you gotTa pick struggle and you've got to stick with that struggle and pick up a fight and fight as hard as you can. If you're fighting in the me too movement because it happened to you I totally get it. You're also writing because somebody was in a toxic work environment made something toxic fighting another break, and then what's next if something else comes up and you're fighting about that as well take you just take it away and makes it seem like you're only saying those things because. Of the week, right right and it's also like she made two, hundred, fifty, thousand dollars a week like made that much money. It was a hit show like I don't I also don't see how that's relevant. You know what I mean like you don't need to also bring up how much somebody made I. Don't think that that's her pleasure bill, but I will say. It rose McGowan felt leg she made. made the workplace toxic that are that's her feelings. That's her way of engaging and listened with tolerance to her. She don't have to do it over the air. She can do on the phone and just throw rose a my dad if I if you thought that way and I did that to you but I, don't think. Anymore. I don't think. I'm. Giving that apology I'm sorry I. Think we know a lot of different people not everybody has a good day I. Think People think just because you're on television or you're part of ensemble cast like your life is so easy. It's a lot of hard work that goes into this. So maybe she maybe she had a bad week or month or whatever. But there's a lot of people that we've experienced that can be toxic or disruptive or difficult to deal with. But that's just sort of this part of this dysfunctional family you keep that within yourself. You don't need to go and spread around and the and the truth is like the whole point rose trying to make was was again a political argument and so politics you know just keep arguing your facts and I think that's a fair argument to have. We argue politics stop in this country. So if you want to argue that with Eliza and you guys want to go back and forth about what who vote for do that. But I say again as you guys said, keep the history out of it because honestly just makes your arguments. Lesson weaker. We aren't just there's no right word. Thank point.

Why Is Plankton Our Tiniest Unsung Hero?

"One of Earth's unsung heroes is also among its tiniest plankton. A single celled algae. It's barely visible to the eye. But it contributes to some of the world's most important resources it's essential to the food chain. It's a main supplier of oxygen and it's the fuel that keeps our cars running and our homes heated these organisms. No bigger than a human hair float. The sunny upper parts of the Ocean. The two main types of plankton phytoplankton and zooplankton support one another phytoplankton and organism so small. The millions can fit in one drop of water produces its own energy through photosynthesis accounts for nearly half of all photosynthesis on the planet zooplankton which are tiny animals in. Crustaceans like Copa Pods. Along with other small fish and marine creatures eat phytoplankton. Then become food for bigger fish and so on up the food chain from seals dolphins virtually every creature in the Ocean. Each either plankton or an organism. That depends on plancton in a David versus Goliath. Battle filter feeding baleen whales like the humpback rely on tiny organisms. Such as plankton and Krill. A filter these whales take huge gulfs of water than use their tongues to push out liquid. So foods like Krill. Plankton remain right. Whales also swim up and mouthed through plankton filled waters. They trapped the plankton and third tongue. That pushes the organisms down their throat but plankton role in the food doesn't stop in the ocean polar bears and seabirds rely on Plankton. Fueled meals like seals and fish. Even humans. Count on fish and therefore plankton to survive Americans loan eat around fifteen and a half pounds or about seven kilos of fish and shellfish per person per year. That's a whole lot of plankton. Plankton itself is making. Its way toward dinner tables. It's not common in restaurants yet. But on Angelina and Nuno Mendez. Both shafts of Michelin starred restaurants in Britain added Plankton to a special event menu in two thousand thirteen. This included delicacies. Like a plankton cocktail and plankton risotto. Leon told the UK newspaper Metro. It's velvety dry. Before mixing it with liquid silky ones mixed oily an elegant pungent on the nose yet subtle and leaves a long finish in the mouth while it's still wearing restaurants. Plankton is slowly catching on. According to fine. Dining lovers plankton producers Spanish agriculture company Phytoplankton Marino are growing microalgae for human consumption and one chef even tried his hand at Phytoplankton bread. Plantains earthly contributions go beyond the food chain. Marine plants like FIDO PLANKTON KELP and the plankton. Pretty seventy percent of Earth's oxygen in fact pro chloro- caucus type of phytoplankton produces the oxygen for one out of every five breaths a human takes and IDA plankton superpowers. Don't stop there. Not ONLY DO THEY HELP. Produce Oxygen through photosynthesis phytoplankton take carbon from the atmosphere during the process of living and store it in the ocean. They die which ultimately helps curb climate. Change this is similar to the process. Trees used to store carbon in leaves since photosynthesis consumes carbon dioxide. The carbon is basically stored in each plankton. A one group of scientists found that FIDO plankton incorporate up to forty five to fifty billion tons of inorganic carbon into their cells and that petroleum. We used to fuel our cars. It's made reprocess. The dates back to ancient seas and also involves that tiny superhero of an organism plankton when plankton die they sink to the bottom of the oceans. Here debris settles on top of them and chemical reactions transform the materials into waxy kerogen and Bittermann a black tar. That's one of the main ingredients of petroleum the carriage and also undergoes further changes as it heats and it becomes what's known as crude oil or if temperatures are even hotter natural gas plankton may be essential but the small organism is also a little bit trixie scientists too long struggle to accurately predict fido plank to numbers and growth rates. But that changed in two thousand five thanks to Nasr's satellite observations and thus reported that scientists can figure out phytoplankton numbers based on how green water is when phytoplankton get stressed by cold water. They become less green phytoplankton. Rich waters become greener as conditions and growth rates improve. Oh and by night. Plankton filled water conglo through the organisms bioluminescence electric blue green red or orange researchers estimate phytoplankton makes one percent of all of Earth's biomass. That's the total mass of organisms. But that number is dwindling study published in the journal Nature in July of twenty ten showed that gradually warming ocean waters have destroyed some forty percent of earth's phytoplankton since nineteen fifty whether we know it or not all. Humans rely on this micro algae. That's why a forty percent decrease or more is worrisome.
