US hits record COVID-19 hospitalizations amid virus surge

"Seeing cases rise again for covid. Nineteen for example. Texas just became the first state to surpass one million corona virus cases. But one of the true markers of how bad this thing gets is hospitalizations. We're always looking at people that get sick enough that they have to be hospitalized. And with the first big waves of the pandemic it was a a strain on the hospital system. And we're starting to see that again. We hit record numbers of hospitalizations justice. Week so melanie a little bit about the numbers and how really this is affecting the rural areas a lot more severely again as you said customisations in the united states of cove nineteen patients hit sixty one thousand nine hundred and sixty four which is a new record for the united states in the pandemic prior record was in april. If you remember the april sir predominantly hit new york and new jersey and california there was a surge in the summer which reached about the same peak as april that really hit across the south and west. You re looking at florida and texas and arizona predominantly. So what's notable this. Time is not just that the numbers are larger but at the cases and hospitalizations are far more widespread. And as you said it's reaching kind of remote oral parts of the country. What's notable about those rural communities is that they're often served by smaller. Hospitals rural communities starkly have had a little more trouble recruiting medical professionals to their communities. World hospitals tend to have fewer beds may not even have an icu. I've spoken with world hospitals this week. That have no you have no ventilators and actually use some of their beds routinely as a functioning nursing home so as cases rise in these communities there are just fewer resources on hand to meet certain demand and speaking of resources one of the interesting things is the demand for healthcare workers and a lot of these places where they might be short staffed or something. There's this kind of roving pool of healthcare workers that go from state to state to help kind of make up the difference but that's also an issue too with these cases so widespread. It's tough to allocate these resources. It is definitely a challenge that several people pointed out to me as i was reporting the story which is in disasters that we've encountered previously. So if you think of hurricanes or fires tornadoes you have a disaster that is somewhat localized. Which means that you can look elsewhere. Look to communities and states. That haven't been hit and asked for help. The problem is that with a very widespread wave and surge of coronavirus cases and hospitalization. It's much harder to send help because you need those workers yourself so we're getting a lot of people a lot of younger people who are getting infected with this but while they are spared some of the most severe symptoms of this often. You know not. In all cases they're starting to transmit this to family members co workers other people that are at higher risk so this pandemic fatigue of being unlocked down in so many restrictions is starting to wear a lot of people. You know they're seeing that it's spreading in your closer circles. Basically we record hospitalizations this week but in the last week we've also seen record numbers of cases the issue there is that hospitalizations typically lag cases by a few weeks. So we're at a record. Now there's this. Approaching number of additional hospitalizations are widely anticipated because of the current case counts and so when we were reporting talking to public health officials they talked about that pandemic fatigue and they talked about sort of basic measures that everyone is struggling with. Which is you know. Sort of keeping your distance not gathering indoors and wearing your masks in order to prevent the spread of the virus. Last thing i just wanted to ask is just kind of how hospitals are adapting. They're clearing out. Certain space to make space for covid patients. And we've been talking about these rural hospitals that sometimes they'll have to transfer patients to larger hospitals. You know there's a lot going on. So i i in new york where they very quickly converted space in to kind of a new intensive care unit and hostels. And i'm talking to now in montana spaces for additional beds. They're putting them in physical therapy. Gyms they put him in office as they take in single occupancy rooms and if added an extra bed they've least a building from Local nursing home look for more space because they expect more cases. There's an effort to try to keep patients in the hospital. But we've also seen temporary hospital insurgents purported this year on a surgeon southern california. They stood up a temporary hospital. They issue there is that they tend to be for patients. That aren't severely ill. And a real bottleneck takes place for those most critically. Ill patients where they need to be in a hospital. If the hospital doesn't have the bed. It become the race to transfer them.

She shows a positive. The math doesn't make sense to me. It just doesn't put the coin. I could be well, but I think I'm right and it said, and you look at other countries and you understand we pay the price in this country for the liberty in the freedom. It's it's way But these are the times you gotta hop down, but that can happen. You know what's not gonna happen, And I wish nobody any harm. The thing I heard that really was disturbing me and nice to catch up. Not under these conditions, though. You know, I'm coming love that they had a postponed again. The the Boston the Boston pitcher. Rodriguez is in his name. Did you hear what happened to him? He had it and he wound up with an issue around his heart, an infection around his heart. And it's really like some 74 year old fart like me. It happened to a 26 year old guy in great shape. So some of the facts were getting this. I don't understand. It's good to hear that they're making a lot of progress. You know, on a vaccine will say, Well, See, I'm just Lightning, too may have suddenly get really last thing and I did take all the precautions with the doors. Wipe them down. Fill that water bowl up Anyone who's listening, Christian. I have big dog people Ice cold War that that won't hurt them. Trust me, and they needed because they d I trade much faster than we go. There you go. Appreciate it, Spike. Thank you. And and hopefully, the dog owners are well aware that most of them are ah dog owners or generally Good people you take on that. Ah, that responsibility. Um It says a lot about you. So I think you know that in general, people do a good job with their dogs. Ah, not always. But generally they do. Let's go to Chris in the Bronx. He is next on the fan. Hi, Chris. No, Chris Great conversation that you're having played that you're having it. I have to respectfully disagree with some of your callers. Okay, think that professional sports right now is like playing with a loaded gun. I don't think people were really looking at all the facts on this Now. I'm not making light of Kobe, 19 worked in the Javits Center Temporary hospital for a month. I know how serious it could be. If someone is 65 are over. With some underlying health conditions like diabetes. This could be a devastating illness. But for most people in their teens, twenties thirties forties, Even if they get this, there's about a 99.5% chance they're going to be fine because the mortality rate is under 1/2 of 1% Correct And I think that if you look at all the athletes to test positive Most of them are fine. Sure, there's always an Internet story that someone young like devastating effects from this illness, But that happens every year. We think the mortality rates it down. Hospitalization rate is down. Positive tests are up. I don't want to make light of that. But honestly each year who would care how many people test positive for insolence? I don't know why we're focusing so much on that. I think there's an acceptable risk in sports, and I'm glad the athletes are willing to take it and I think it's time to open a lot of parts of this country again. Well, The problem is that we still don't know There's there's just not enough. We know you know that That's the bottom line. Is that the people that want to open it up again? I mean, you see what's going on in Florida right now, and they can't go back to school. So That's a big problem. They're not going to let kids go back to school, and the teachers don't want to teach him in that environment, So a lot of it has to do with. You know what other people are willing to put up with. And what are Public service People are willing to put up with that. That is, you know, also major factor ear into Trixie over your right when right on the money. When you say a lot is unknown about this disease, we don't understand exactly why right now in the summer, it's killing so many fewer people. Even though a lot of people were still affected by it. We don't have the disease has weakened. We don't know that. I just know that back in April, people would especially the elderly. Were dying at an incredible rate. And now they're not so so much is unknown. However, I mean, just look at the percentages of people that are okay who get it in certain age groups, much of the country can probably go backto work with the proper precautions with mess. With some social distancing. And I do believe that those 65 older and those serious health condition should continue to cause extreme precautions. But for most people think this is acceptable. Certainly feel that way about these athletes because they're so healthy Every one of them who get it seems to be asymptomatic and medications. Yeah, and I think Look, I appreciate the focal. I do think that that's part of Why we are where we are, because there are people that absolutely agree with you. You know, they think we're making too much out of it. And that, um It's It's amore publicized version of a lot of things that kill people. You know that people die every day of all kinds of things, but this one is what everyone's paying attention to now, so it is become 10 times, Maura, Va. Story than it should be for The number of deaths that causes and people under 65. There are people that agree with you on that. I'm not one of them. But there are people that agree with you on that. So that keeps this debate going. Is that there's a number of people who Hasn't touched personally, or who believe as this caller just did that the risk. For those under 60 especially that are healthy. I don't have underlying Illness isn't great enough to grind.

2020 coronavirus pandemic in New York (state

"New York has surpassed a grim milestone the state is now reporting that more than a thousand deaths from the corona virus and with this pandemic engulfing the region the mayor of New York City is warning that the city is running low on critical medical supplies and still rose is following all of this ideal he David I guess talk us through how we have arrived at that this milestone well New York state reported more than two hundred deaths from the corona virus just yesterday alone that was by far the biggest one day jump so far but even that number is likely to look small in the coming days here's a pretty grim assessment from governor Andrew Cuomo I don't see how you look at those numbers and conclude anything less than thousands of people will pass away because remember who would sit tacky it's attacking the vulnerable Angela in hospitals and in New York and it sounds like just under unimaginable stress yeah especially in New York City which now has more than thirty thousand confirmed cases mayor bill de Blasio says the city and its hospitals have enough protective medical equipment on hand for only about the next week and that the need for ventilators is even more acute here's to Bosnia this is a race against time yesterday we sent fourteen hundred ventilators out to our hospitals that is a huge step forward but we have a long long way to go your city is getting help from a wide range of sources for example the nonprofit Samaritan's purse set up a sixty eight bed hospital tent hospital in Central Park FEMA set up thousands of temporary hospital beds inside the Javits convention center the navy hospital ship is on its way to help relieve some of the pressure on city hospitals but there is still is concerned that this man all not be enough and that the city's health system may still be overwhelmed when that number of critically ill people peaks over the coming weeks what and another institution that it that is under duress is correctional facilities right I mean I know I know prisons jails around the United States are starting to see cases spread and and that includes some significantly in New York that's right there more than two hundred confirmed cases of corona virus among the staff and inmates in New York City jails including the infamous reikers island complex and this is a big concern for public health experts because they say that once the virus gets into an environment like that it is very hard to contain because it's almost impossible to do social distancing or even wash your hands adequately so there is a lot of pressure to get the jail population down by releasing inmates who don't pose a threat to public safety New York City has released more than six hundred inmates so far according to the mayor but the city is facing calls to release even more as this virus continues to spread what about another place where social distancing is all but impossible I mean detention facilities fee in immigration detention facilities I mean that that there are those in the region as well that's right an immigration and customs enforcement asking for earns two cases of detainees testing positive for corona virus both of them in detention facilities in New Jersey just outside New York there are many lawsuits now across the country calling for ice to release people in detention particularly those who have underlying health conditions that make them particularly vulnerable ice currently hold about thirty eight thousand people in detention almost half if not been accused of a crime other than immigration violations the agency says it is taking steps to protect the immigrants into custody for example suspending social visits lawyers are still allowed to visit but they have to supply their own protective masks and equipment which they despise and court hearings for detained immigrants are still happening despite weeks of criticism now from lawyers and judges all right that is NPR's Joel rose talking us about that dire situation in New York state thanks to the reporting job Hey
