"I would say in terms of just going from a 4-3 defense and in Oklahoma with his hand, in the dirt to a stand-up outside linebacker, I have noticed a few good reps against some of these backup tackles Korey, Cunningham, yodny cajuste. You know, guys like that have had tough gig jumps. So I think we're all expecting Ronnie Perkins to be sort of, if he's not a red shirt, maybe he plays a little bit in the kicking game. I think it's similar to Anthony Jennings for a PCM, maybe a little bit, any kind of wait and see in your to whether you can bring to the table. But is there anything that you have seen from Ronnie Perkins? That makes you say that he can contribute right away as a rookie or you kind of in my life that maybe we're going to see a slow slow roll here with Ron. Maybe late in the year, maybe late in the year. He comes along, he seems to be, you know, a very engaged learner, right? You mentioned hit him gravitating towards Matthew judon him speaking, with Tedy, Bruschi that kind of thing. So if you can learn quit. Yeah I think they can get them in. I'm very impressed with just how quick he gets off the line of scrimmage his initial burst but he is does seem like more of a project player. That being said, if he's going to contribute this here I think it's going to be on a special teams, get special teams experience in Oklahoma. We've seen him out there, you know, getting some special teams reps so far this summer. So that's maybe where we see him right away. But again, he he does strike me as a guy who who seems like he can pick things up relatively quickly. So, you know, a couple of guys get banged up as as is what happens over the course of the NFL season, maybe get to November and he gets his chance and he runs with it, so I am not expecting him, you know, in the first month or two, but he, he's not, I'm not totally writing him off this year either. Yeah, he's got some nice block, recognition, two and two against the Run working against the scout-team offense. You've seen those mome Is where he recognizes the polar or he sees that outside step further outside zone or he's just able to kind of anticipate those types of blocking schemes a little bit. He's very instinctive player and we song Oklahoma and that's why he was around the ball so much for the Oklahoma defense as he's got great instincts. And the guy, you know, this kind of gravity towards the football which I really like to see out of a player at that position. I do think that standing up on your feet and being on your feet and playing a little bit more in space and playing a little bit further. Outside the formation. That is a big transition for a lot of guys now, Chase winovich was able to do it almost instantaneously his rookie season and he was able to go from a 4-3 and in Michigan system to a 3-4 outside linebacker in the Patriot system pretty easily off. The only thing. I like about Ronnie Perkins is that he's going to play 3-4 outside linebacker at 2:55. Maybe I would guess is probably where they would like him to play at..

He was standing on the field talking to Teddy Bruschi for 5-10 minutes. You could see them working through like technique or that that stands out to me, if he's going to take something from Tedy Bruschi and add it to his toolbox, that's noteworthy that it will see if he can actually do it and make it work on the field. But he now has that he now has that natural box that stands out to me. So if you're somebody who's, you know, in Oklahoma fan, whatever you're rooting for Ronnie Perkins, to make the team, that's a moment you can point to and say, you know, he's doing what he needs to do and I feel like I've used that phrase on this last week so you know he's doing what he needs to do. Yeah, the joint practices in the preseason games, decide I'm a broken record, the The Joint practices and the preseason games, decide. A lot of this song, These practices here in bills talked about this, these practices are almost prepped for that. They're getting you prepared for the joint practices. They're getting you prepared for the preseason. So I don't know you know head-to-head in a position battle, how much ground a guy, how much ground a guy can gain in this setting but what he can do is Build That Base and build that foundation. So he can gain ground when it matters once you get to those joint practices. So I get Ronnie Perkins, both the tweet and everything he's done on the field, I don't know that he shot himself up the depth chart but he's done everything. He needs to do to put himself in a position to move, himself up to do once you get into those joint practices. So that's where I look around and Perkins right now. He's a guy that's building a strong Foundation. That's what you want the rookies to do. And to me, he's, he's done that to this point. Yeah. I agree with all that. And the other thing that I wanted to mention before we sign off, here is Johnny Smith who I just thought had a, a really great practice today. Doing everything that has advertised with Johnny Smith right off. Talking catching the ball, catching the ball, and all three levels of the defense, moving around the formation. And I mentioned that inside six drill, which is basically just the Bible offensive line and plus the fact and against six guys on the defense front, right? So it's basically like an inverse of seven on seven and in that drill, you get really competitive hard. Life is Run game actions and Johnny Smith on. One of the first reps of the practice, actually, a competitive reps. He took Joshua J, and he just threw him right out. That's what I tweeted, right? He walked him right into the parking lot. It was just textbook feet and hands pad level down and just get him and go and it was just such a good rep by John. But i wanna talk about something that we haven't touched on yet guys. Brady is the goat. And the only mahomes has played three seasons three full seasons as a starter and he's been stopped in the playoffs twice once in the afc championship game where pre-snap penalty on a brady interception. Stop that game for being over. Mahomes his favor right. Homes want threw an interception last game. A hold on wait. a minute. pre snapped penalty. Brady gets the ball back and mahomes never touch the ball again. That's one postseason lost. The next one was in the super bowl to tom. Brady on another team. Not the patriots. Well i do believe speaking to the media is part of being a professional athlete. I don't know why it should be mandatory. I think the athletes should be given choices because of the way a lot of times. The media is viewed within locker rooms. I myself personally. Felt when i was playing with the patriots. You get done with a game and the game's not over yet because it fits a loss in you're going in there. Here comes some more opponents that are that are trying to get you in terms of its just how athletes keep themselves on guard like trying to get me to say something that they will use in a in a unflattering light if you will so that type of philosophy is something that i always looked at in always. It was hard for me to develop trust which i did with a lot of members of the boston media but it can be very difficult. I understand what he's talking about now in today especially after last year with the pandemic i think that the option one of these to be athletes having if there's any type of anxiety towards it the zoom press conference where the athlete has control right in front of a computer being able to be in a more relaxed state because i absolutely think that there are times where journalists try to challenge you during press conferences in that can put an athlete on edge and all of a sudden. There's an uncomfortable situation and it's out there and you can't take it back now. Do i believe it's part of being an athlete. Absolutely but in today's age the individual feelings of an athlete has to be considered more than before and they need to be given options. I think athletes should be required to speak to the media and you have to take that with a grain of salt. Because i'm a member of the media and so i have an incentive to say that that doesn't mean consciously. I'm telling you something. I don't believe you will find that people usually like incentives shape their behavior and their opinions and people can point to social media nowadays and say well like there are other outlets. But i think it's good to have a more centralized clearinghouse for the news especially in niche sport like tennis where casuals can go and be made aware of what's going on. That's good for the sport. Because i know people might be thinking about the sport is the thing right. The media is just kind of the window dressing but we sell. We understand the world storytelling. That's the reason there is the money. There isn't professional. Sports is not simply because they're playing on the highest level. It's because people know the characters they know it's stay for the characters. They know the struggles. They know how great the obstacles are. The characters to overcome their antagonists. That whole thing. The media is important for that. And i think leagues and tours recognize that now in terms of meiomi asaka who i think did absolutely the right thing by saying okay. These are my obligations right now. I can't do this right now. I gotta look out for my own mental health. We talked a lot in the first segment of the show. The first hour about this and mental health issues are very important because they've been stigmatized that a lot of has resulted that people won't get help and also as an example. Am i feeling pain or pain. And i can deal with this or am i. In fact injured. And i shouldn't be playing right but mental anxiety take for anxiety for instance that's even hired as harder to self diagnose because everyone feels anxiety especially before something that requires very high performance in a competitive situation. There's a difference between just feeling pain in an injury. There's a difference between just feeling anxiety and dealing with anxiety disorder. How large segment of the nfl population that. Just love wwe. Well i think it's just the sports world. I think they recognize that how much those guys put into the wrestling world fake. But there's i've seen a lot of injuries. A wrestling world minnows. Those guys stewart some serious tough stuff so well and look at their physiques. I mean they've got be putting an hour at the gym every day and probably consume tw- ten thousand calories a day and i don't know how it is now but i know back in the day. Those guys didn't get paid crap you know. They're not getting paid like professional. Athletes get paid. I mean i think some of the bigger superstars might have you know like the The rock and stuff like that but you know they. They're they're very. They have to do a lot of work. they do. A lot of touring they do shows. You know back to back. I think athletes respect them. Plus it's fun because it's like theater. It's like sports theater drama. it's Well it's like the nfl where they you know. They put in years of doing it for free. You know through high school and college and just to make it chance at the nfl draft. There's very few that. Make it to that top tier get their contract and all that so. Yeah because you've got. I mean there's wrestling leagues all over the country. New guys do this stuff. The probably guys that pay money to get to be able to go in and raise throw each other around here. They practice the stuff in their backyard off the rooftop k. Ben Roethlisberger is 'clearly a part of the problem'
"Next. Next team president art Rooney. The second said Wednesday that talks have started between the Steelers and Ben Rothlisberger on a contract extension. Big Ben who turns thirty seven in March has one year remaining on his current deal. And let's keep in mind. There's been a lot of drama and Pittsburgh fellas and Tonio Brown apparently wants out lay beyond bells that out the entire season. Not to mention that Big Ben has been going back and forth on retirement these past couple of seasons. Tedy Bruschi still here with us joining us from the Pro Bowl and Orlando I teddy. There you are. We got you got you and all your friends in the background is big and more of a problem or a solution because this franchise feels like a mess right now. Because both he's he's definitely a part of the problem because they no other men in which he's handled things. I mean, again, you know, you you've got numerous players. You've got numerous NFL aficionados that have religiously called out Big Ben for saying things in throwing people under the bubble in the fashion of the quarterbacks. Don't this is not me talking. This is basically reporting what they've said as max is done as many others. If you watch Big Ben you talking about juju Smith Schuster. We should have thrown the ball of him every time you say something like that. You've got to know you've been around Antonio Brown long enough to know, how those kind of things would affect him along with various other things in other positions that he has taken that. We don't have time to get into in the end when it comes down to is that has made him a part of the problem because Big Ben is live by different set of rules. He's a bit flagrant with it. And I don't give a. AM who you are anytime you receive preferential treatment that you are you are playing by different set of rules as everybody else you are going to rub people the wrong way, especially when you consider the individual who abuses, the privilege. That's the bottom line. Having said all of that. When you look at Big, Ben he's also a part of the solution because nobody's perfect everybody makes mistakes. And if you're willing to man up in knowledge that you could have done better in certain respects. I think that would go a long way, I think the thing that the Tonio Browns of the world and others that are incredibly frustrating is not that big been mixed the mistakes, they made is that he doesn't necessarily he isn't necessarily deemed as an individual that learns from apologized showed the pope level of contrition and move forward without making sure not to repeat those mistakes again throughout the years. You've seen a pattern of behavior that has been consistent with him in that he has gotten away with it. If you listened to those NFL players Antonio Brown is one of those NFL player. Here's somebody that has said that. And as a result, you a big band you want to alleviate this situation you speak up. You recognize us where you're at fault. And I think if he did that that would go along way. So he's both a problem and a problem solver in all of this because he's right in the middle of everything as the stock quarterback of the team who obviously has is outspoken, Saddam. Well, we agree and disagree because I think he is part of the problem the solution. But for very different reasons part of the problem because Ben Rothlisberger is like a rich man's Eli manning. He is too good for your team. Just to stink almost no matter. What's going on? Right. You're good. A win some games. Maybe make the usually make the playoffs. So how do you get his successor? There's no succession, I just talked about how you know, unless you're Bill Belichick level. And it's not so easy to find a quarterback when you're not drafting up high. You know, it's more of a crap shoot. They don't have the person there that they feel can take the reins of the team if they're truly grooming. It doesn't seem to me on the other end. Therefore at the moment. He reads a lot of power because when you don't have that. But you do have a talented team. And you have a quarterback who's shown he can still play at a very high level, and we're in an era. That's right teddy in an era where older quarterbacks are clearly protected in ways. They've never been you look the level. Tom Brady is still playing at forty one. Drew Brees at forty then rothlisburger at thirty seven that that they realize, oh, wait a minute as beat up as he's been as much as he talked about retirement. He's still maybe has some years of football left in him. We don't have as backup. So he wields probably too much influence and he seems to at times publicly throw players under teammates under the bus. He's a problem because he's too good to get that next quarterback with the draft pick. He's your solution to the extent that you're good because he's a really good quarterback. And if you ain't got that, you ain't got anything. I'm with both you here because Big Ben has been a problem, and he can be a part of the solution. But this is what's happening here as you're talking about max. The quarterbacks in this league getting older and older and still being able to play past forty. What's happening is a generational gap. A generational gap between the quarterback and all of the younger skilled players and all of the younger players on defense that are ended up being a part of this team and the ability to relate. So they're almost these kids are coming in plan. I mean rothlisburger will have players coming in make sure that have had his poster on the wall or something like that that group as fans, and so how does that quarterback that aging quarterback you mentioned breeze Brady and rothlisburger? How was he able to relate to them and make them feel like still an equal? And as one of his teammates, this is where Ben Rothlisberger has failed has he failed. Also and other aspects where Stephen as talking about what he's calling out teammates where he's got no business when he should have when he's the one making bad plays. Also. Yes, I agree with that. But he needs to learn to start to relate to these younger generation of players because he will continue to get older, and that gap is. Real and you'll see players life Brees. How he still it seems like medicine Brady and breathes? They're old. Okay. How do they still have these close bonds with these young players that come into their teams and their teammates talking about them like they're best? How does that happen? There's something. Character wise that breeze and Brady has right now that Rothlisberger is lacking. I need your help with something here. Because here's what you lost. You talked about him relating to the other players, and I don't disagree with that teddy. The problem is it eight the younger players complaining about him and Tonio Brown is thirty years old. He's been big big Big Ben Rothlisberger his teammate for almost the past decade. And so this is I'm not saying that, you know, the he's thirty seven thirty thirty seven like Big Ben is, but he ain't twenty eight twenty one like did you Smith Schuster? The man is thirty the last six seasons. He's had a minimum of one hundred one receptors a minimum of twelve hundred and eighty seven. Yard. He's produced. Poor Big Ben he's been a primary target for Big, Ben. And yet that's where the problem seems to lie at this particular moment in time. So how do you explain that? And I'll put it up put it simply then because I agree with you there. It's a feeling that I've had with the quarterback that I played with and a lot of the saints and a lot of these older players on these teams that are mentioning they have the overwhelming thought in their mind that my quarterbacks got my back. This defensive went up against what we thought it was pretty good offense or a lot of weapons on offense and only gave up ten points only gave up ten point. Now Cincinnati had to get out of there out of their game plan ios twenty four seven at halftime thirty one seven with eleven minutes ago in the third quarter. So you kind of have to adjust a little bit. But any Andy Dalton fifteen of twenty nine they they rushed for only sixty five yards again, they couldn't run as much because of the game plan. But you gotta get some credit to that the Kansas City Kansas City defense gets put in a nice situation because they get to. Play more one dimensional on defensive knowing the opponent has to pass the ball a little more and that helps and then they have to go out and get the job done. Yeah. You've got to hold up your end of the bargain the way the team is built the two thousand twelve team. I played on at Notre Dame the number one defense in college football. So we knew we were going to get more cracks at it. Because they turn the ball over a lot, and they were going to get more stops, which meant we had more offense obssession. So we had to just hit on a big place. Something put a consistent drive together. Every once in a while to spell them. So that they could go and continue to be great while we were above average on offense for this Kansas City. Chiefs defense, you have to just go out there and pick spots where you get stopped. Be situational the way Tedy Bruschi and others have described modern NFL defense because your offense more often than not is going to put you in more advantageous advantageous situations than almost any other team in football.
