Teddy gellman is our producer. Russian authorities are saying that Ukraine used a pair of drones to try and launch an attack on the Kremlin overnight and assassinate president Vladimir Putin, Russia is claiming the drones were used to attack Putin's residents within the Kremlin compound, WTO's national security correspondent JJ green has more. One of the things that's very clear if you watch the Kremlin and if you know how to watch the Kremlin, you get a good understanding of when he's there and when he's not. And when he's there, there is a ton. And I guess maybe I should say two tons of security around the building because he's obviously the most protected person in Russia and there are times when they're not. It's not at all clear that this was an attempt on Vladimir Putin's life. If it did happen as a result of a decision by Ukraine, it's more of, okay, here's a message for you, Vladimir Putin. Here's a message for you for the entire Kremlin, the entire country that we can get anywhere we want inside Russia and that includes to the Kremlin. Ukraine is saying it has nothing to do with any attack, Moscow is now saying it may use this incident to escalate the war in Ukraine. Stay with us for the latest on this developing story throughout the day. Here at home, the clock continues to tick toward the U.S. defaulting on its debt. This week, the treasury secretary Janet Yellen told Congress the U.S. is facing a June 1st deadline. The White House has its leaving the door open for compromise with House Republicans. Joining us live, CBS congressional correspondent Scott mcfarlane. Scott, what's the latest now we prepare for talks next week between the president and congressional leaders. It's clear as day mark that both sides are just digging in deeper. Reinforcing their outflanking positions in this dispute. There's no indication of a gap being bridged or talks underway that could lead to a bipartisan passage of anything. But it's also become clear ahead of this meeting at The White House that whatever is necessary to end this risk of default and end this debt ceiling crisis will require some bipartisan something. Some new politically complex group of Democrats and Republicans that has something that can pass the House and the Senate and get the president's signature. And there is no hint or suggestion of that group forming just yet. Well, Scott, why are people on both sides of the aisle claiming that they can do something here that will add up to a win for their side? Well, at this moment, they're each trying to gain leverage Michelle, Republicans are trying to outflank Democrats, Democrats are trying to outflank Republicans in terms of public opinion to help give themselves more negotiating ability or simply to give themselves more power in these dispute. But the bridges that need to be formed between Democrats and Republicans need to be formed quickly were less than a month until the deadline and the number of days Congress is in session here in Washington this month are precious few. There are only a handful of days in which folks are actually here. So time is more finite than even the calendar indicates. As people look at this debate playing out over the next few weeks, folks are wondering ultimately what does this mean for me? What does it potentially mean for the economy? Can you break that down for us? It means an awful lot. If the debt ceiling is even nearly breached, it could rattle the stock markets. The stock market could plummet your 401k could get nailed. You could be a downgrade to the U.S. bond rating. There could be a triggering of a major recession. That's just it flirts with a breach if it's actually breached come June 1st, all bets are off. That is CBS congressional correspondent Scott mcfarlane, Scott, thanks for joining us. Thank you. 9 35 on WTO traffic congestion and highway bottlenecks could be costing you thousands of dollars each year. Figure out I want to ruin the reputation, but I look forward to working with you. Then the president quickly got down to business. Two years ago, the economy is railing. I stand here tonight after we've created with the help of many people in this room, 12 million new jobs, more jobs created in two years, any president has created in four years because of you all. But we are under attack in a left wing culture war, we didn't start and never wanted to fight Every day we are told we must partake in their rituals, salute their flags and worship their false idols. CBS News, special report. I'm Christopher Cruise. This is Mitchell Miller on Capitol Hill. Very disappointing. Virginia Republican bob good, one of the president's sharpest critics feels the address was a letdown. It should have been a really short speech. The president should have said, I apologize to the American people for all the suffering and all the harm that I've caused over the last two years. Right now, it's a wet morning across rigid, but it's mild, everybody's in the 40s and that's as warm as we're going to be for quite some time. Arctic whole front just come into western portions of Maryland right now. It's going to come through the ration between about 8 and 10 o'clock this morning. As the investigation continues into Sunday Night's small plane crash into a tower near Montgomery village, we're now hearing the 9-1-1 call, where a surprisingly calm pilot explains his predicament to the emergency call taker. I've flown into a tower to the northwest of Jesus bird airport. It's one of the electrical towers and believe it or not, the aircraft is tend in the tower. And I don't know how long we're going to be able to stay here and I don't know. Yes, I'm the pilot. Happening today, the Senate is set to vote for final passage of a bipartisan bill to protect same sex and interracial marriages. The bill does not set a national requirement that all states must legalize same sex marriage, but it does require states to recognize another state's legal marriage. Senate Democrats are moving quickly while the party still holds the majority in both chambers of Congress, the house would still have to vote on the legislation and sent it to President Biden for his signature, support for this bill has gained momentum, including backing from a number of Republicans in deeply red states. Meantime, Congress is shifting into a legislative sprint toward the end of the year, and it has to address some critical spending bills soon. We hear more on that from WTO's Mitchell Miller today on the hill. Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer says he hopes Republicans will work with Democrats to pass an omnibus spending bill. Ensuring the federal government is fully prepared to serve the public in the next fiscal year. That needs to be done before December 16th to avoid a government shutdown. If a long-term Bill can't be passed, lawmakers will need to approve a short term measure. The Senate, meanwhile, has advanced to same sex protection bill on a procedural vote, clearing the way for a final vote expected soon. On Capitol Hill, Mitchell Miller, WTO. "Joan Jones. And I'm John Aaron, teddy gellman is our producer. The top story we're following involves new information this morning about the war in Ukraine. Missile attacks continue in the city of zapper Asia, and the large nuclear power plant there has lost all external power needed for vital safety systems for the second time in 5 days. Earlier we spoke on Skype with WTO national security correspondent JJ green. Diesel generators are what they're using to try to run this plan. And this is critical because they need to keep the plant cool. They need to keep it from overheating. They need to keep it from melting down. There's also this concern too about the fact that a top human resources official from that plant was kidnapped. And this may be an attempt by Russia to essentially blackmail the workers at the plant into going to work for Russia and basically abandoning their obligation to Ukraine and this plan. Meantime Ukrainian forces are claiming more gains on the battlefield, they've recaptured 5 settlements in the southern croissant region that's one of the four regions recently annexed by Russia. Without detailing specifics, President Biden said there are plans in place should Russia use a tactical nuclear weapon in Ukraine. It could lead to just a hard outcome. And not because anybody intends to turn it into a World War ending, but you just once you use a nuclear weapon, the mistakes that can be made, the miscalculations, who knows what would happen. President Biden speaking, there was CNN's Jake tapper.
