Reflections On Atlanta Braves Legend Henry "Hank" Aaron

"I could talk about the dignity in the class of hank. Aaron the man the you've been being for an hour easily but i'm a numbers guy and so let me tell you what i did. After hank aaron died i navigated over to his page on baseball reference. And i don't know. I just be held the majesty of this man's career and it literally gave me goosebumps. The more i looked the more. I realized he was beyond great. He was at some other level. He wound up with nearly thirty eight hundred hits. And that's a lot of freaking hits. It's a thousand more history chipper jones. It's two thousand more hits than mark. Maguire it's more hits than johnny bench and hank greenberg got combined and they're both in the hall of fame so i think about all those hints and i think about those seven hundred fifty five homeless because that's two hundred more homes than mickey mantle. Two hundred it's more homers than edgar martinez and duke snider hit combined. And they're both in the hall. But the more i dug i found other cool stuff to hank. Aaron had double digit home run seasons at age twenty and age. Forty here the only three players who did that. Willie mays ted williams hank aaron. That's a pretty good. Start on a mount rushmore. Would you say and all those home runs. He hit for all those years. This never struck out one hundred times. Then there's total basis crushes. Everyone who ever played in total bases six thousand eight hundred and fifty. Six total bases isn't just a record. It's seven hundred. Twenty two more than stan. Musial was the next closest player in history. If stan musial had hit another one hundred and eighty home runs. He still wouldn't catch i karen and total basis. That's a lot of total basis. That's incredible hitter hank. Aaron was for two decades. So is it possible to be one of the greatest players who ever lived and still the underrated. After looking over hank aaron's numbers. I think it is my name. Is david o'brien cover the braves for the athletic. And there's only two guys that i've ever felt this aura around them and that was mohammed ali and hank. Aaron and hank aaron. How's interviewed him. The first time at spring training. I remember approaching him and it was just You know i've done this for thirty years. And it was feeling. I've had unlike any other athlete that i've ever approached but then he immediately just he smiled and was so warm that that fear or intimidation just as melted away. And you could not believe that you were talking to this. Superstar is genuine icon living in atlanta for twenty years You can't overstate the importance of hank. Air to this city and this region the south. I grew up in the south and hank aaron being a black man being the greatest one of one of the two or three greatest players of all time and to do what he did in the south and then living in atlanta and seeing hank aaron you know mementos anchor and tributes and see his name on buildings and streets and that kind of thing. I would argue that. There is no athlete. That is more important to a city than hanker and wants to atlanta. He was such a huge part of how the culture of the south has changed. I mean this is a city where you feel fide of being so much black acceptance here. Thanks a huge huge part of that. He helped pave the way for all these other black athletes and entertainers wanna come here to be here. Brian jordan know it was an all star with atlanta. Bryant said that The reason that he chose atlanta was hank. Aaron and was a boy idle here. He said a black kid growing up playing baseball hank. Aaron was the guy but it was an opportunity for me to meet my hair. The hope the opportunity is given so many kids today. Amazing dominique wilkins. Said hank was a big reason. That he came here was one of the first people. It's probably one of the most instrumental guys into getting me here in atlanta. But one for god like hank. I wouldn't been here. Was hanker went to ted turner and said hey you need to get this kid by any means necessary. He said people should give the roses while they're alive and that he's glad to see him getting them now but he said hank should have been put on a pedestal decades ago and he was right What are the things that i remember him saying is that you gotta set example for people to come at you. And how do you do that. You do the right way you doing about being Have miltie you do it by just doing the right thing and the right thing a lot of times. It's hard and a lot of guys. Young guys don't know how to do the right thing. As far as how they present themselves to people and how they get back to people so to give back experts that i've learned over the years has become from erin trampling. We don't see that much of that anymore today. And he lived in the same house that he bought when he came here in. Nineteen sixty six from the

And yet casey like what i would have loved was to be in the ballpark in to see gibson barking at someone when he was walking back to the dugout. Her to see Tim carver try to go out. Talk him on the mound and then think better of it and retreat back behind home plate like those like like like just the command in the command. The facts had over every pair of is inside. The ballpark was watching him. Just guys in pitching you know just guys to can look so different and go about it in such different ways in mechanically Some guys that could not be further apart but the results are so dominantly similar sometimes. Yeah and it's why you know. I think about football standpoint. Jim brown is always name for me. You know like i. I think it seemed person but watching barry sanders. Play all those years. "I. Like you know the the the the present? Basically some yeah I mean buster. You'RE GONNA. Look at things like that movie I'm GonNa look at things like straight Outta Compton with that white sox that didn't exist without. Seeing took place, but nonetheless we digress. I also think about being out there for the two thousand, five world series the first world series in Chicago since Nineteen fifty-nine wouldn't allow spirit was remember going with a dear friend of mine who is a white? SOx. Leiper and experience it through through his is just a very special moment. And I remember Old Comiskey Park. which in its waning days was. Crumbling into dust in what's now the parking lot out there I'm happy I got to it. It was a game against the Seattle mariners sat like very, very close to the field You know this classic. Jewel box ballpark not good white sox teams out there. This is a franchise ascendant. Right now sure looks like it and a pretty good ballparks. Yup I agree with you I think the renovations absolutely helped it. All right. Let's get this week's quiz. So we're in week twenty nine and I tell things up. So after twenty eight weeks Taylor sits at twelve correct answers buster with a we've had twain hyper we've had met best Gurjin we've had troy sitting in for Taylor but the gap is where it is you know yeah, that's how. This thing. Okay. Okay, twenty, nine. Here we go. This franchise has lost more games than any other more than eleven thousand total defeats. Is it the braids, the phillies? The reds or the dodgers eleven thousand total defeats. Braves. Phillies reds, dodgers. Now, let me ask you this. You say the franchise. So are you saying the team name in other words? Is it the dodgers quote unquote or is it the dodgers franchise franchise dodgers franchise phillies franchise reds franchise braves. Okay what he got Taylor I'm GONNA go phillies. I'm going to go reds Taylor. Yes. Wow. Well, that pretty much over buster. Virtual Champagne being caught. No high fives no displays I mean come now that's okay. But I know this the the Fandango out in the parking lot cheering you on. For you know for for getting your correct phillies answer even though its status doesn't reflect well on their franchise, they've got to something to cheer about. Top before you go, your book is coming on paperback. Tell us about that. It is winning ugly came out in hardcover a few years ago. The paperback is out. September twenty. Nine. which is next week, and it is my loving Oman to some of the most questionable uniforms in the history of major league baseball, but it's also. Kind of goes into the history of the baseball uniform and why the Twenty Twenty Cincinnati reds look somewhat like the eighteen sixty, nine Cincinnati, red stockings. So it is available really wherever books are sold. Now. All right. Perfect. Thank. God. Thank you. Your tweets. Already, buster. Bleacher tweets for Wednesday I stop Andrew Desalvo rates in if they were fans in the stands who booed more loudly the Astros and opposing stadiums or Bryce Harper and Philadelphia after another underwhelming in the context of his contract season. Yeah. Andrew you. Know the answer that the Astros would have been. The it would have become sport this year to the Astros. Let's face it. Every single stadium they went to for sure James. D is up next at Mo jo mode. I can't I. WE GOTTA Move Quick. Mojo rising don't you the doors I do know the doors but that that would that's over. Rise in. Eighty three. Okay. Okay. Do you think baseball writers would have been better off giving out three cy youngs and MVP's this season given the unusual schedule instead of an Al and NL award it'd be east central and west since that's who you competed against all season. I actually really liked this idea from James. Yeah we well, you're wrong. So James here's the deal every year they these teams don't play comparable schedules. We players in the American league central every year they play very, very different scheduled in teams in the American League East Snow veto come down with a hammer. All right. Last one for today Peter our rights in buster Jesse Rogers mentioned it last week. But do you think the changes of player in Game Video Review Policy? This season is affecting some hitters more than they'd like to say I'm thinking folks like Jd Martinez and Peter tag him in the tweet which I think is a little bit rude. But he finishes the this up with any way to show this with stats. No, you really can't showed with stats because we don't know exactly how much the players are affected but I don't think it's rude. We've been talking about it on air when we had the red sox on air, we're talking about, yeah jd Martinez has been affected by this. His managers talked about it talked about talking to jd basically telling him and and I'm this is exactly what Ron Reinecke said but in so many words get over it. Like everyone everyone is dealing with the same thing, I'm sure Ron Ronnie was lot nicer than I was all right. Franchi's calling them out then it's fair game I'm sorry Peter Well and I just wanted to be he didn't really call them out. He just answered the question. Yes he's had conversations with jd that's the polite managerial way in two thousand twenty. Got It..

"Was a hard for me to understand that you need to go to the dentist. Is it as if you were kind of going to the store to get some toiletries, he was going to the dentist to get his key cleaned because he was going to travel up to Bristol, which is just so typical ten it was beautiful. So we went there. Most of us, you know worried about you know other things in that situation writes. That was strange. They're going to have to ask him about that next week Out of the end of the regular season with the angels three and a half games out of the eight spot I, you know this got simplisafe yesterday people were trying to give explanations. I think the explanations obvious Carl, you're talking about a veteran player who's made a lot of money. He's Scott People in his family. I think as we all do who might be at increased risk and because the angels aren't in contention, he's like you know what I'm going to take it to the house. I'm kind of I'm not really moved by it. I probably would wonder you know once once you see the team completely out of the race there is a bit of a bail feel to it like let's just finish this off we. We've managed to do what we've done with regards to the cove it and make sure no one gets sick and so I you know I'm not really sure that you know with three games to go or whatever the the minimal number left. Is that it was it the optics over great. But again, they're out of it I understand the point about made enough money, etc etc. I don't think it hurts down the road with regards to free agency. But I, you know you've been with us. We've all been together and now you decide to leave unless and again you got couch it with unless there is a underlying compelling reason but no one knows about then of course you you have every right and should do that. On the surface it just kind of like Let's just let's just finish it out wherever you going. I would I would say this and social media people are asking whether or not. We had an impact on his free agency and the perception of as a player and perception of them as a team made. In my opinion. I would agree I don't think it has anything I wouldn't do that at all and if I'm looking for a premier defender and one of the best shortstops in the Game Andrew Simmons is on my list share just doesn't change that there's not a lot at stake in the American League playoff field unlike the nationally, which is completely chaotic but in the American League, it's pretty much shut but I do think that the most compelling. Thing for me is, who's the number four seed who's the number five co twinjet Yankees that seems like a big deal, our old friend Steve Phillips tweeted out this morning twins are twenty, two and five at Home Yankees are only eleven sixteen on the road. That is why the twins are desperate to finish head of the Yankees is the four seed. So they host the wildcard series I think there's something to that. What do you think? One hundred percent there's something to it and look you know the the white sox. This is a huge series for the twins and the white sox because it's not out of the realm of possibility that the white socks could slip to a four or five seats. So I I think the Yankees benefit greatly if they can from playing at home it was clear last night Aaron Boone made clear to us. This was Garrett. Cole is last regular season star that in spite of the desire to play at Yankee. Stadium and that is their preferred destination for the opening round that you know we're not going to change things. We're not going to risk injury were not going to use players or pitchers that we We don't believe is necessary Garrett Cole pitching in any park is generally better than than somebody else pitching. So taking it on the road is you know is is not ideal given the different numbers that the twins have at home in the Yankees on the road I think the white sox are in the mix because there's rustling a little bit lately. The thing I observe about coal and the Yankees is as good and he's been great than the Gosh Yoka. Dynamic seems to really be good. I think it four stars. Ziara is somewhere around point nine nine or want or very close to one You know you're GONNA face in ace and there's a really good chance really good that the game is you know one, often one, one, zero, zero and coal last night gave up another homerun he's given up fourteen home runs There is a they're they're to me would be a little anxiety. given that in a zero zero game or a one nothing game they lied and there's one man on after walk. But that has to be in the back of your head and you know we've seen Clayton Kershaw over the years pitch really will for four or five, sometimes six innings and all of a sudden you you give that two or three run home run and all the sudden you're on, you're on the bad side of a two or three, one game and I. That would be my concern because we've seen the Yankee offense be great and we've seen the Yankee offense absolutely go silent and against the arms that they're likely to see in that first game against coal it's just something in the back of the mind. That's all. He was great again last night and he's been great the last for he knows what his role and responsibility is. But that that that discounts the other team and the other pitcher. Yeah and the other team and the other pitcher looks like it's going to be Jose Barea. So we had on Sunday night baseball. He was terrific like he had. He's put together is stuff in the last three or four starts, and that twins lineup hasn't been as dynamic this year but they're capable of hitting home runs. They showed that ladder. Led the game off last night with homer I mean, we remember Jandi ds last year in the wildcard game what happened to Oakland. How the race use that to catapult themselves into the next round that's those are the types of things that happen. That's why this is GonNa be the greatest most.

"Crew. She's a professor at George Washington University revealed she'd been lying about being black for years. She will no longer be teaching classes this semester a spokesperson for Gw you did not comment further requests not been returned for CNN the message from the Gw, you administration comes just one day after crew is a professor of African and Latin American Studies revealed. She was not a black woman that she had been passing herself off as for years instead she revealed she's white Jewish from Kansas. City and throughout her adult life there she goes Krug had masqueraded as North African African, American, and Caribbean rooted Bronx blackness. was onto her ass years ago Roseanne Barr. She knew Oh. Yeah. That's right. Didn't know. Little yardstick. But how bad is racism in this country where half the people are trying to pass themselves. As. The hated race or not have to build. Those Cases of people trying to become a race that we allegedly hate and that doesn't seem. Not a great strategy. If in fact we are who we say we are well, it was funny because like I said August was the first person to send me this article and I got many after that and he made some joke like Oh must be a friend of Gina's well I said I it's not that big of a community. In Kansas City, I promise you I know someone who knows her psych I text, my best friend, my oldest friend from Kansas City and I said what's the deal that the name sounds familiar? Do We know her? Yes, she went to our synagogue she's so and so's niece She was a few years behind us to sit in front of us at snuggle. while. You Go. It's a small town in Kansas City. Now was she doing this in order to get a break I mean to get on the staff or to be able to teach these subjects credibly other thing too is kind of weird. It's like. I can listen to a guy speak about the civil war who didn't participate in the civil war needed to be reacting I'm old fashioned that way like I just feel like you can talk about Black Studies Chicano Studies. You may speak about that like you speak about any subject yes. Right. We're all you got CAESARIA coming on soon but like some of The best analysis about sports football regular are not from guys who played the game. You know what? I mean the best hitting coach Ted, Williams, the marginal hitting coach. You know what? I mean because it came. So naturally to him, I is the person who's studied it and really understand the science of hitting and that's why booger McFarland doesn't have a job. Exactly. Right I. Think you're right like. Is it the chicken or the egg? I would be shocked I mean, that would be a way bigger story if she felt like soul man like had to become this person to get this job than it would be like this undercover story and it would be totally different. This seems from just just a few paragraphs that this is she wanted to identify an Oh, I, would get a job doing this and she said I'm not a culture vulture I'm a culture leach. This kind of her may call. Yeah. Well. But if you think about it, if we live in a world where we're really getting granular about people's heritage and it turns out that you're kids got a better shot at getting into a better college if they have a little native American blood in them or little Hispanic or little something, it makes sense. A lot of people are going to be checking that box when they're filling stuff out like there's going to be. We are giving people in that. Arena that the college campus if we're saying. We are going to lower the admittance standards. If in fact you have a little this in your heritage. And your heritage or we may be hiring, but we're looking for somebody with this and their background and not that in the background. It stands to reason that a lot of people especially in the murky world of heritage are going to start fudging things right? Why? Why wouldn't you? I mean, what's so different about Laurie Lachlan out mean it's like going. Past. Kid off like half Cherokee Indian or something she probably would have would have done that. So I think we're going to see probably more of this. Well, she's no Elizabeth Warren.

Amy Spowart, Head Of The National Aviation Hall Of Fame

"Many years especially when right field was more impactful when the foundations of today's age were taking off so much research with here at Afrl, and there's all kinds of research and aerospace research places that are here. It made a lot of sense Scott Crossfield even said to me once amy, you're not a pilot unless you through right field everybody who's anybody flies through right field, and of course, you know in the early days, there were Ayla celebrity who always came on China and it was John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart. Who's who I remember? My first enshrinement in nineteen ninety, nine Ted Williams came at Joe Foss. We've had John Travolta Dennis, quaid miles, O'Brien all been and sees it the hall of fame event but I would say following the economic downturn of two thousand nine and companies started to pull out of the Dayton area. It was harder to get that kind of support. So while the city of Dayton wholeheartedly loves having the hall of fame here we also Need people who can sponsor because we receive no federal state or local funding at all whatsoever. So we have to depend on aerospace aviation companies industry to support US and in Trimbe it was a big help us getting brand recognition. It's never been moneymaker. It's part of our mission to memorialize. So we need people to support our education and support are learning center through sponsorship. So what we decided to do in two thousand seventeen is actually take quote unquote. Show on the road, the Oscar night of aviation left Dayton and we went to Dallas first, and then we went to DC in twenty, eighteen and Denver and twenty nineteen than we were supposed to have a homecoming here in twenty twenty. But of course, the this year has been postponed until two thousand, twenty one we're working on getting is back to the National Aviation Hall of fame in Dayton use an abbreviation there a F- on the Air Force research. Lab. So. Here Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Employees. I think it's twenty to thirty thousand people in. Southwest Ohio, and only about less than half of those are active military. So there's a lot of research scientists here, and that's where the United States air force does all their most important research everything from what they're going to build aircraft out of to what their munitions do and Jet Propulsion. It's all located here in Dayton at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Still is very much a hub of aerospace activity. especially from the military and. Speaking of which there are signs that the or the appeal of aerospace is not resonating with the youngest generation do you sense that and if so is the hall responding in some way? It's hard because it's just like covert. The company's nonprofits that survive cove. It are the ones who are going to adapt and react to the situation with kids with this next generation they're not so much looking up lake weeded or the generation before me did Neil Armstrong stood in one place and what's fair to the sky and we all know the Wright brothers played with a little plastic helicopter type thing that inspired them. So we need to appeal to kids in. What interest them? So that might be if they're interested in the environment, they WANNA make less noise from aircraft. They want less jet fumes from cargo plane. That kind of thing we have to say, why not you? Why don't you figure that out? It makes me think of enshrining clap Myra who wanted a safer jet plane. So he thought about it and thought about it and he Allen Clapp mark came up with this idea of putting a parachute on the top of. A plane and everyone's like that's not gonNA work except the vision jet is pretty remarkable. So what we need to do is have kids interact or read about or they have to know who Bill Mayer is, and it isn't just Alan Shepherd. It isn't just the astronauts it isn't just the inventors it's all the Chinese and they can inspire kids more than just an aviation. It could be designed it to be dreamers that could be artists, but if we all have. Heroes. That's what gets kids going and if we give them a problem like make less noisy aircraft or might be a kid who's a Gamer and they sit on the computer all day, they're actually going to be fantastic drone pilots. We just have to recognize what they're doing and adapt to it.

Today in sports history: Ted Williams hits game-winning home run in 1941 All-Star Game, Boston Red Sox Vs New York Yankees

"Look back on this day in sports history July 8th Start today. Back in 1941 at the MLB All Star game. The game was notable for bringing the Yankees Joe DiMaggio and the Red Sox Ted Williams, together on the same team to Hall of Fame outfielders were each having legendary seasons, with Williams batting over 400 DiMaggio breaking the consecutive games hit record. Of course, the game ended with drama. Williams stepped to the plate with two outs and two on in the ninth and hit a towering three run home run to give the American League the wind. Williams later said that was one of his favorite moments of his

Can All Plants Be Preserved in Seed Banks?

"Today's episode is brought to you by Oregon. You know, when something goes wrong at home, and you just freak out. Protect your time and your temper visit organ dot com to say fifty dollars on your first mosquito service with the promo code brain. Organ home is where the bugs aren't. Welcome to brain stuff. Production of iheartradio. Hey, brain stuff, Lauren vocal bomb here. If you've ever heard of a seed Bank, the basic idea is this when the apocalypse is over and the forests are nothing, but smoking ruins and the fields Barron of grain fear. Not we can rebut the world thanks to our bench seeds stored in bunkers strategically located from here to eternity. These fall barred international seed vault in Norway, for instance, currently holds more than eight hundred eighty thousand seeds and has the capacity to hold up to two point five billion. Seeds are pretty amazing forms of reproduction. All you need to do is dry them out and freeze them solid and they can last for years. It's a comforting thought and ace up civilization sleeve, and the seemingly less and less unlikely scenario that we self destruct the UN's global strategy for plant conservation plans to Bank seventy five percent of all plant species by twenty twenty but hold that. Arguably comforting thought according to a study from researchers at the Royal Botanic Gardens Q, there's a significant catch they discovered that whole host of plant seeds just can't be banked, including Cotto ca cow and mango their findings which were published in November twenty eighteen issue of the journal nature plants detail, how a full thirty three percent of tree species alone are on this list, including oak and chestnut. Trees were still thirty six percent of our critically endangered species are also on bankable, and that's not even counting twenty seven percents of the regular old endangered plants or thirty five percent of the vulnerable ones. So why can't these seeds be banked apparently, not Alcides like the drying out process and for this? They're labeled recalcitrant seeds, which seems a little unfair calling. Seed stubborn just because it can't tolerate dehydration as a bit rich coming from species that can barely last two days without water. Luckily, there's a way out of this jam and it involves liquid nitrogen, which is always fun. Yes. To make sure we've got all our seeds safely tucked away in indefinite storage. We have to resort to cryopreservation dislike Ted Williams and all the other immortals being kept on ice. All one has to do is dissect the seed, priorites embryo and plunged into smoking cold nitrogen instead of storing seeds at conventional negative twenty degrees celsius that's negative for degrees Fahrenheit, going cry. Oh will keep these finicky seeds in suspended animation at a subglacial temperature of negative one hundred ninety six degrees celsius that's negative three hundred and twenty degrees Fahrenheit. Some researchers advocate cryopreservation for all seeds, even the cooperative ones because they'll last longer. Of course, a full out. Apocalypse isn't the only reason for banking seeds climate change habitat loss and the growing threat of plant pathogens are already threatening bio-diversity. So the time to preserve seeds is now though taking steps to protect habitats and slow climate change would certainly be good as well. That's like a vintage Ted Williams era who on ever Ted Williams story after this own until you, but Ted Williams era baseball the recreation of that Jack. Yeah. So i'm. Watching the game with my son. And then we get to the last two innings, and it becomes clear that the dodgers are gonna lose them. We're in Dodger Stadium. I was in there too. The Red Sox fan started moving up. I was one of them. Yeah. We had really good seats. And then we were like, screw it. Yeah. I said come with me. Boy, this is how it's done has all the other fans left. Yeah. And everyone they were like gonna in the Red Sox fans. Let me take it was and it was near back behind home plate for the last inning. But. This is the difference between L A and Boston. There's a lot of differences. But I'm there and Dodger's fan start to realize it's not going to happen for them. So they stand up they knees people with like their faces painted blue. Yeah. And they have dodgers shirt. Everything the hat everything. They stand up they turn. They saw me and recognized me. And they saw my Red Sox. Stephanie say. Well, Conan it's not gonna work out for us this year, but you guys had the better team, graduations. And then they shook my hand. And then they'd be like better luck next year. Wish was at did win the series. But it didn't happen. Oh, well, Boston's the better team good good day to you, sir. I n n f Boston fan saw Dodger's fan hit pull his heart out through his chest. And eat it in front of his giant. Do you know what I mean? It's just this funny. It would've been. And relate to it. "Follow him on Twitter at Bruce underscore Jenkins. Bruce, how're you doing today, sir? Good. Everything is great. Hey to start this conversation off with with bomber. But angering wall passed away yesterday. And and you know, everybody's memories of him. And what he meant to him was was pretty cool here NAT and we had a chance to talk to Cuco yesterday. And and it was cool. It was awesome. You've been around this game for a long time. And I'm sure the person you knew and for sure when you heard you passed away yesterday, it was it was a bummer. Yeah. It was. And you know, he was just one of those rare individuals who was a total professional completely self effacing. But the ultimate y'all metro in his job with just a fabulous sense of humor. You know, he he had his he would always say you're gonna have a bad game. And amazingly ride all the teams he covered only one of them went to the postseason that was the eighty nine giant. He's he happened to miss eighty seven working the Yankees. But he saw a lot of bad baseball. But he said there's no excuse for a bad broadcast. And he would he would entertain you not in a not in a way with just to put the team down wicked vicious stuff. But just, you know, tasty funny stuff and that related to the game or maybe he just drift off on a little bit of a tangent to keep things going, and he was he was one of a kind and really it's it's a big loss. If you're gonna listen to bad baseball, the person who's describing to you best be entertaining. And. You have to do that. Bruce. I was talking. I was talking about sitting in the booth. Thanks a lot. I started at sports phone sixty eight at night because he was doing the games solo Lee Jones, always said, you know, sit in the other chair Henkel kind of have someone conversed with I didn't talk on the air, but he had an audience of one there. So he could see what he was saying was funny if I was laughing or whatever, but I loved whatever book he was reading would come across in the broadcast. He gave me Atlanta's book about Ted Williams called the hitter. And I learned so much about Ted Williams. And and you know, he got closer to the end season. They were talking about the MVP race. And it went to hey the year DiMaggio had fifty six game hitting streak. Ted Williams hit four hundred they voted to Maggio MVP because they were writers that left Williams out of their top ten because they hated the guy. I mean, you know, so Hanks weaving in the middle of kind of a giants Novarum season. And I was kind of on pins and needles waiting for the next part of the story and admits amongst the giants not scoring and losing three to nothing or whatever. Yeah. It was just it was just brilliant. How he did that and on a bad team? The sport of baseball the history that giving someone interesting and Ted Williams growing up in San Diego, and then being a fighter pilot World War and just he was weaving all this in in the midst of kind of nothing baseball games. I was like, man. This guy is a a master working at his craft. It was just great to be around that. Yeah. That stuff is so invaluable to have historical context, and there's so much great fascinating stuff. That's happened in baseball going back to the nineteenth century. And I just remember travelling with the teams that I was on the beat. You know, Hank would always be, you know, checking out a bookstore somewhere. Where's the best bookstore in town? And he'd be there for a couple of hours and extremely well. Read guy always had tons of notes that he'd bring with them. And and he'd save, you know, he'd save everything he thought was worthy of going on the air for a time when it was exactly. Right. It it might be a month from now, but he'd clip out stuff from the newspapers and take notes from his books. He was just a marvelously well prepared guy, which is a great lesson for people in any business. We are talking to Bruce Jenkins. Find columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle and SF gate dot com. What's what's been picking your interest in the very beginnings of this NBA season? Well, there's a lot of things going on. Of course, you know, the war. The warriors stories are we're reading about them. And you guys are all over that. I thought it was interesting that trae young went off the other night for thirty five and ten or something I watched every almost every game I could of his Ed Oklahoma. And I sorta got increase increasingly less interested as it went on because they were sort of finding him out and warming him. And, but I'll tell you the guy keeps coming, and, you know, he he's he's he's like hurry in the sense that he'll pull up from like thirty five no problem, stole eat alone. Then we saw that the other night. And when he when he takes offer the basket, he's a great passer. He's got a little floaters, and he's never going to be great defensively. And he's gonna have some tough times. I think they play Dallas in Donncha tonight. So that'll be interesting. But you know, that's one of the things just to see, you know, quiet Leonard is back with with it hundred looks like. He's one hundred percents now as we know it's always really about what's happening next year. Right. Bob, all but who's going where next year and sure enough the Butler is going to team up with with the clippers. And does anybody wanna play with never slow wherever Kawai is playing next year? It's going to be a lucky team. Yeah. Well, Bruce, what I'd like to do is Rodney I'd like to have dinner with you tonight. And during that dinner, I'll we'll talk about as dinner next Tuesday. The table. What what the the trae young things interesting because the Don sick trae young trade, essentially, and our friend Travis link did that in Atlanta there, we're going to watch those parallel careers and see man, you didn't wanna look, and you really believe in in trae young. And what I find really interesting is the man who drafted Steph curry, Larry Riley is a consultant now in Atlanta, and he helped them with that draft. And so they may have seen some curry like traits not just for what trae young can do, but the impact of that perimeter shooting and how it affects all the other players on the floor. See that's the thing that gravity towards staff makes Durant better. Klay better dream on better Damian is getting wide open dunks because five guys jumping a curry all the time. And so maybe young has that kind of effect down the road eventually with Atlanta. Yeah. And the great thing it's not like, you know, jimmer for debt or way back Rick mount or these guys. Trae Young's have very good passer as his curry. So you gotta you gotta watch out for him. You know, you wanna double team him? But he'll get rid of the ball. If you leave him open, he'll shoot from anywhere. But he, you know, he sets off to the basket. He can kick out or hit somebody underneath is very very creative guy. And I just love how he just keeps coming. No matter, you know, in college in the pros, you you can't you can't break his spirit, and he he's going to be around a while this it's it's tremendous thing to see, and, you know, Travis link is I mean, the Larry Riley, and and you know, the the picture of trae young and lots of draft picks coming up. He's trying to of build the warriors. You know in the in the south, of course. Yeah. Not a bad way to go. No, no. That's not a bad thing to try and emulate when I woke up this morning. I didn't think we'd get a Greg Ostertag reference on the show. I sure as hell didn't say Rick mount reference on the show. So bruce. The obscured by basketball player of the day award. It'll be in the mail. Made the cover of Sports Illustrated. And he's made the way after he made the covers Sports Illustrated. The World Series before we let you go. They've already played a game. But I still want your prediction of of this World Series between two clubs. We were just talking about this a while ago. They are put together similarly the Red Sox, and and the dodgers young talent playing well right now, but they're both monied clubs, and they've spent a lot of money to go along with that at young talent that's playing well it's going to be evenly matched. But to me the Red Sox are just relentless with that lineup which I thought. Yeah, I didn't have anything in in print for public. But I you know, I did pick the Red Sox just you know, in my living room. Because they're just you know, I I like the dodgers I think they're they're a fun team to watch it very entertaining. And they got some villains on the team. And you know, they've got a lock on the National League West now. But I tell you. I mean, the Red Sox are just they're so loaded. Garlic bogart's. A shortstop is tremendous tremendous player Benintendi out in left field. I love that kid and he gets four hits. And then you get back to the to MVP candidates, you know, with with bets and JD Martinez. And it just it goes on and on their kid Evers is a tremendous left handed hitter. They've just got you know, there's and they're built their rotation is built around starters, which you know, I'll take that over Liam Hendriks. Call me crazy. But. I'm a little bit of a traditional isn't that? I don't wanna see nineteen pitchers every night. You know? I'm just funny that way both teams are like that in a way. But I don't take. We'll see any complete games. But I do like. I do like that. They're both teams are built around the starters. But I I just think I think the Red Sox just have too much going. It'll be interesting in L A to see if they bench Benintendi or Jackie Bradley to get Martinez in the in the outfield. Excuse me Martinez is gonna play. He's he's unbelievable. But even even with the one of those two out feelers on the bench. You know, they're available later in the game because it's an actual league game. And he hit for the pictures and everything else, but they're deep and they're young, and and they're veterans, and they they are compelling. It's what every team would like to be before. We let you go Martinez is going to play and they're gonna put him in that outfield. I don't think it's going to be Vladimir Guerrero playing the outfield and the two thousand ten World Series in the giant says hit balls at flat whose knees were just shot and couldn't move. I don't think it's going to be like that for the dodgers. But she might as well see because there's that outfield as it's currently constituted in their part is great those guys they make spectacular place. They all have arms. They all have have ranged because they're athletes. They don't give away outs. Matter of fact, they'll take runs away from you. But if Martinez is out there and he's not up to snuff. If you can just flip that bad boy out to him and see how that works. I I would think the dodgers a smart that is. Absolutely one of your plans of attack when when you get back to Dodger Stadium. Well, there's no doubt about it. I mean, the drop off between that's two Martinez and jailed massive massive. Yeah. I remember that throw that's made in the LCS. I do Bruce. I was watching that game. In around. Forget who hit it. But he's he's taken off for second. Figuring. I got this. And he just didn't know listen, my my knowledge of the Red Sox, and the understanding of how good they are is purely informed by the fact that they went and beat a Houston team and look bad in the process..

"This is a way different subject, but there is a PBS special premiering tonight, in fact, called the greatest hitter who ever lived as documentary about none other than Ted Williams as part of the American Masters Series. And interestingly, there's a young man who kind of in a weird way played Ted Williams in the documentary. They had some scenes where they needed a guy, kinda swinging a bat and looking like Ted Williams, who was the stand in for Ted Williams. And it is Irie how much the Astros rookie outfielder Kyle Tucker looks like. Did we ABS? He's got that long. Thin billeted had especially early in his career. He's got that left handed swing. He doesn't wear batting gloves. The whole thing in this is how stupid I am. So he comes up to the big leagues, George Springer yelling at us. Do you call him Ted, you call him Ted and I just thought, okay, you know he's tall and skinny. He's a left-handed hitter, Ted Williams. Got you. Got you. Okay. Instead I didn't realize that he actually has been Ted Williams and will be a stand in for Ted Williams on this PBS American Masters Series tonight on Ted Williams. I can't wait to watch it. I bet it's really well done. Now. There was a coal store in the New Yorker about the the background of talker being involved in in basically the the producers of the movie are are looking for somebody an Email contacted MLB just saying, we're having trouble finding somebody resembles Ted Williams immediately. They should back note. Look at this Astros prospect, he's six, four hundred ninety pounds. Ted Williams often mentioned in his scouting reports and look at his slow MO swing in this video, and they send the video and they were like, that's it. That's the guy. That's perfect. So pretty cool thing for college Hooker newly promoted to the big leagues. Cal Tucker, no less. So a lot of cool things going on his realm. These days Richard, it's a new week. What do you watch in this week? I'm going to start tonight. I'm gonna watch the dodgers Phillies tonight. I wanna keep watching Manny Machado. I wanna just watch the evolution of the Phillies they've been. They played great lately won thirteen out of twenty mclintock's going out and trying to get him some pitching. But this is a good week. You know, the nationals Burs play. We keep waiting for the light to go on with the nationals. The Rockies come home and have to against the Astros and then a series with the as they play great lately. So it's it's a good week of baseball yet. I'm just a hyper focused on the trade market right now. So paying attention. Cole hamels start Monday night against the Atlantic's. Obviously a very good team playing well are the as and hamels is one in two with a nine point, five, three era. In one point, eight, eight, whip in his last four starts that's not going to get it done. We know hamels pedigree, postseason pedigree that is so because see him go somewhere where he's got a shot at a World Series rang, but he's got a pitch better quite frankly. So we'll see a small samples. Can be a big deal this time of year. So we'll see how he rebounds. If rebounds tonight we'll be back on Wednesday for the usual funding gains with Richard Justice. My thanks to him. Thanks to Anthony komo's for joining us today and to our producer Mersa Morris. We'll be back soon. Have a great day. Everybody..
