"Desk on Taylor van Sykes among our headlines today. In the next 15 or 20 minutes or so, we expect the half moon bay mass shooting suspect to appear in court, the 66 year old man is accused of killing 7 workers at two farm sites in the Northern California town of half moon bay. The motive yet to be determined, but officials have said that evidence points toward a workplace violence incident. And the vice president is said to visit her home state of California to follow up on the multiple deadly mass shootings this week in a tweet hair saying that she'll visit Monterey Park, where 11 people were killed during a lunar new year celebration over the weekend, two days later, at least 7 fatally wounded in that half moon bay instant we were talking about. As of the new year, all Washington state employers are supposed to post a salary range for positions they hope to fill. California, New York City and some others have essentially identical laws. As Washington Post reported Taylor telford puts it, corporate America is having a hard time adapting and Taylor joins us on northwest news radio. Here in Washington state and I think in a lot of parts of the country, if you're a city or a public sector job, you have always had to have the pay range posted. But how quickly are private companies able to comply now? Yeah, that's a great question. The answer is for everybody, but overall, it seems like companies are having a bit of a tough time making this adjustment compliances lagging could be heavily in a lot of the big job markets that have had stuff on the books for a little bit. Like California and New York City. And overall, this seems like there's a lot for companies to puzzle through when it comes to the different patchwork of legislation and also the actual task of pleasant going through setting these salary ranges. I took a page out of your book and I glanced at some of the job postings for Seattle for the big companies like Boeing Microsoft Starbucks. And they all have really massive pay ranges for some of their Seattle based corporate jobs a hundred grand or more in some cases. That can't be helpful for job seekers, right? To have that big of a range? Definitely not. When I spoke to job speakers, a lot of them expressed a great deal of frustration with the way that they've been encountering these ranges because the whole purpose of these laws are to call attention to inequities and pay and really put that power in the employees hands to kind of level the negotiating field. But it's really hard to do that when you're encountering a range that could be anywhere from something like 50 K to $200,000. That's really not saving anybody anytime. But on the employer side, their argument is basically that there's just so much that goes into setting a salary range when it comes to where you might live, what kind of experience you have, all that kind of thing. And so on their end, they feel like these really wide ranges are still there and well within the kind of good faith realm of what they're willing to say. But certainly for job seekers, I don't think it's having the intended effect. What about for small business? Because, you know, not everybody has the HR army of Walmart or Google, what kind of burden does this present for a small business? This is definitely a much bigger challenge for those smaller companies than it is for those big companies that are already used to hiring and recruiting in all those different jurisdictions. And the risk certainly for those smaller companies is a lot higher because they don't often have the expertise on staff that can help them figure out how to navigate this stuff. And so the consequences of getting it wrong can be really, really tough. They might be facing a pay discrimination suit down the line or facing thousands of dollars in penalties for non compliance with these laws. So it can be a really, really heavy list for some of those smaller companies. Even one to agree that this is the right direction to be moving it when it comes to the pay conversation. I found it interesting to see in your reporting that some companies are just breaking down altogether they're posting salary ranges for all their open positions regardless of location. How common would you say that is from what you were able to see? Yeah, I don't think it's super common yet. I think it kind of comes back to that size question. The company that have made that decision are big ones like alphabet and IBM and Wells Fargo, one there are just kind of already recruiting in that national or even international perspective. It's not as much of an adjustment for them to make a move like this, especially given that at this point about a dozen states and municipalities across the country have enacted laws like this and there are more that are pending. So this is certainly the way that things are going. It's not going away. And so for the companies who have been able to make that switch, I think it might be a good thing. But for a lot of other ones, they're probably going to struggle to kind of make this adjustment. There's more to the story like the impact on the gender pay gap generational divides too. "35 Identity theft and unemployment fraud combined to rob the U.S. of up to a $163 billion in the rush to claim unemployment benefits Your body is covering this for The Washington Post and spoke with Taylor van seiss It's been two years since all of these trillions of dollars in federal aid were made available How far are we from understanding the scope of the theft and fraud tied to that You know I think we're still several years away from understanding all that It was really a historic amount of funds that went out from the government in order to respond to really an emergency situation But kind of now that some of that is slowing down and there's a chance that sort of catch our breath and observe what actually happened and where this money went I think we're just starting to understand the scope of how much of those funds really went to people or places that they weren't supposed to go to Is it even clear how much might be fraud versus just bad math and overpayment Even that is still unclear and investigators are trying to figure that out and then of course try to get some of that money back But for instance that a $163 billion figure that you cited is sort of what is called overpayment So that could include people who legitimately were getting funds that they needed but then got too much And then as well including as well in that is funds that should never have gone out to those recipients people who were actually defrauding the government In your story you include an infographic that shows just how little money has been reclaimed from that $163 billion number What is that number Why is it so small Right That number is $4 billion out of that a 163 billion And it's small because it's just really painstaking to put these cases together And then to actually trace that funding those funds and be able to get them back from those parties A lot of these sort of scams that occurred were undertaken by people overseas Or the funds just kind of disappeared into whether it's cryptocurrency or other sorts of accounts and it just becomes quite a daunting enterprise for local investigators for saving investigators and of course for the federal government as well to understand sort of where all this money went and how they can get it back now Most folks listening to this are reading a story online at Washington Post dot com won't want to defraud the government at any point in their life But how openly are crooks sharing strategies to commit these crimes It's a really interesting question We found to our surprise that it was quite open There are different social networks including one called telegram That is maybe not super popular in the United States but it's very popular abroad And on this particular social network there were groups dedicated to this kind of fraud and kind of sharing tips and tricks and saying oh this state's program we could defraud it this way and kind of sharing their formulas with each other So it was actually quite open Especially in those first few months of the pandemic Also says quite a lot about how many of us have had our personal information and social security numbers compromised as well You can read about all of this online at Washington Post dot com from Jake and a tour body who's with us today on northwest news radio You're going to thank you And that's Taylor van seiss Well there is relief insight for parents searching for baby formula but it'll still be a wait as we hear from ABC News correspondent Andy field in Washington The FDA says Abbott nutrition's infant formula plan should be back to full production in a few weeks In the meantime they're making it easier to import from other nations Our new God streamlined the ability for companies including most of not normally selling from formula in this country to make products available to the U.S. market FDA commissioner Robert califf not saying exactly how.

Requiring consultation before any deportation changes are made. 1 46 couple of significant ceremonies took place at the U. S Capitol building today. Joining us with more from Washington, D. C is a B C's and as delicate terra it as Let's start with the live quorum call that happened today. What is that? What does it mean for the impeachment trial of Donald Trump? Yes, It's a really interesting turn of events in the Senate when Senator Rand Paul tried to force a vote on to determine whether it is constitutional for there to be a try alot of for a former president. So there Anywhere. He was trying to get a vote on the constitutionality of former President Trump's impeachment trial. But they did not the that measure. The measure to actually take a vote on that did not pass. The motion was killed by it was a 55 to 45 vote, with five Republicans joining Democrats. That means that 45 Republicans voted for the effort, which seems to signal that Republicans might not believe that the trial is constitutional. And that's something we have heard repeatedly from Republicans from more and more Republicans in recent days, you know, a lot of them had come out in the aftermath of the capital siege to condemn the violence condemn the president's words and actions, but in recent days People like Marco Rubio, for instance, have come out to say that they don't believe the trial that it would be constitutional toe hold an impeachment trial for a president who is no longer in office. We talked yesterday about who would preside over the trial being Senator Patrick Leahy from Vermont. He's a Democrat. But also as of today, he's now third in the presidential line of succession behind the Vice president and speaker of the House, right. That's right. So he knows the rules state that if the trial is the impeachment trial is being held for someone who is not a president. Then it is the president pro tempore e of the Senate who would preside. So in this case, it is. Democrat Patrick Leahy of Vermont. So it will not be chief Justice John Roberts presiding as he did last time, and the fact that Leahy is presiding is a big deal because you know, it's Zumba that Republicans are pointing to to say no. Clearly, the rules are different here because the president is no longer in office. And so they're using that to do you know, they're saying, if we were really holding an impeachment trial for president than it would be chief Justice John Roberts. Clearly Democrats are Clearly the rules are different in this case because President Trump is no longer an officer. They're using that as an example to kind of add to their argument that this trial is unconstitutional. Democrats are pushing back on that we saw, you know Chuck Schumer talking about it yesterday day repeatedly using that the trial is constitutional. They want to hold the president accountable, and Democrats are getting back at Republicans saying that we should be discussing the process here. Whether or not this is constitutional. They're saying we should be discussing the president's words and actions and focusing on the on trying to hold him accountable.
