Morant game-time decision for Grizzlies in Game 2 vs. Lakers
"Memphis Grizzlies star John morant will be a game time decision when his team faces LeBron James Los Angeles Lakers in game two of their Western Conference first round series Wednesday. Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins said Tuesday that the two time all star point guard suffered no ligament damage to his right hand in an injury that occurred during Memphis's one 28 one 12 loss to the Lakers on Sunday. Morant scored 18 points in 30 minutes before exiting the game. He had an MRI on Monday that showed only bruising of the tissue between the bones as the fourth year guard aggravated an injury from April 7th. I'm guessing kuba.

Grizzlies beat Bucks 137-114, secure No. 2 seed in West
"The grizzlies clinched the second seed in the Western Conference, pulled away in the second half for a one 37 one 14 win over the box, Jaron Jackson had 36 points. The grizzlies overcame a one point halftime deficit. The bucks rested most of their frontline players and the grizzlies took over in the second half. The third quarter was the key, says grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins. Raised a level in that third quarter obviously home to 15 points. It was something that we got to continue to work on or connectedness or physicality. We're going to need this for the long run. Luke canard added 19 points. The bucks were resting players because they had clinched the number one seed in their previous game. Check Freeman, Milwaukee

"AP sports I'm Josh rowntree. We start on the NBA where Memphis took a game over Dallas with multiple stars sidelined. Correspondent Robert Stevens has more. Desmond baines scored 23 points as the Memphis Grizzlies completed a two game sweep of the Dallas Mavericks, one O four 88. Naz played without Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving both injured while the grizzlies were again without John morant. Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins says his team up this defensive intensity in the second half. Come out of halftime with just a renewed energy and mentality. Hey, we got to raise our level both sides of the floor. We made a couple adjustments defensively that paid off for us, which got us going with our groove on offense. And obviously that third quarter kind of changed the game. David roddy and Dylan Brooks had 19 apiece from Memphis while Jaden hardy led the Mavs with 28. Josh green at 23. Bob Stevens Dallas. In Houston, the rockets knocked off the Celtics one 11 one O 9. And jabari Smith scored 24 to lead the young rockets, one of the best teams in the league, where it was in the finals last year, you know, just competing with him. You know, going down to the wire like that with a great team like that. It's just real promise in this room. It's really good for us. The bucks beat the kings one 33, one 24. Giannis Antetokounmpo poured in 46 in the win. The warriors took down the sun's one 23 one 12 behind 38 points from Klay Thompson, including 33 in the first half. On the ice, buffalo scored three third period goals rallying to beat Toronto four three. Alex tuck at the 30 goal mark with a pair in the final frame. We kind of got back to just trying to work and make simple plays and you know I just roll over one line after another after another and it makes a huge difference out there and big news in the opening day of NFL free agency. The Raiders reportedly filled their QB void by agreeing to terms with former 49er. Jimmy Garoppolo on a three year deal worth, 67 and a half $1 million. The bears are set to give linebacker tremaine Edmonds a four year $72 million contract and the Steelers are bringing on three time all pro corner Patrick Peterson for a two year deal. "The makeup of the team. But now, you know, but they're still young in some aspects of it though, Dan. And that's the part that kind of bothers me a little bit. Is that this year they came in with the expectations because of what happened last year, which is great. But if you look at their team too, they're still pretty young and key position. I love Desmond Bain. Jaron Jackson to me is the key in regards to being healthy in the playoffs. I love the way Taylor Jenkins kind of manipulates the lineups and gets the most out of his guys. But I gotta get in my head and I made my credit to Mike Brown. To me is the perfect Mike Brown team. You say what? Well, when he's with Cleveland he kind of had LeBron and LeBron kind of ran things that the Lakers, it wasn't really, it was still kind of somebody else's. This is his team, a young team that has bought in, they're kind of filtered out, streamlined the roster, so he didn't have a lot of overlapping positions. Darren fox is on point on pay, sabonis is like, probably one of the best acquisitions. I really love the direction in which sacrament is going. I really love how they responded to Mike Brown, even though he's probably been criticized in other scenarios about his offensive kind of takes and stop. We're talking to Jim Jackson, he's a busy man, NBA on TNT, clippers analysts. You called, you got to Purdue, Wisconsin, or you had that last night. And then you had Lakers. Are you sold on the big man with Purdue? In college, definitely. Okay, but are you sold on? Okay. In regards to his experience in play. If you look at the preseason all American team with four post players, traditional post players. And one guard, Marcus sasser. So you had osso Shibuya drew Timmy, you had Zach Edie and trace Jackson Davis. Why? Because in college, a traditional post player is going to get multiple touches all the time. All the time. In the league, that's not going to happen. So post players can still be postponed and be dominant. And why that is effective is because now you got to double team. So you have a lot of shooting available around the court. And Zach EDM will tell you that watching him progress the last few years, the thing that gets me and you can see how good he really is, one is confident. You know, you play well, Dan. You've been around enough to know. Guys started to get successful. Mentally they know they can play. His footwork is touch around the rim. His acceptance of double teams and how to beat him and his awareness, court aware. All these things you can watch and see that he's grown accustomed to and comfortable with. That's why I like where he's at now. To me, the keyword Purdue is their backcourt. That's Fletcher lawyer and also Braden Smith are two young freshmen who are a little bit smaller at the guard position that if they're not playing well, this is a different Purdue team. We were talking about scoring the Antoine Davis trying to beat Pete maravich's all time scoring record, fell three points shy and we were talking about different scoring outputs.

Why did somebody else live your life? I'm coming for everything. Amy was like family. Now he passed talking Michael B. Jordan returns both in front of and behind the camera for creed three, which is in theaters today. So will this next chapter in the long running boxing franchise keep us on the edge of our seats? We spoke earlier to get her review from vulture critic Jen chaney on Skype. This is a really, really good film. Michael B. Jordan's directorial debut as you alluded to earlier, at this point in the story, Adonis creed has retired from boxing. He's kind of moved on. He's been very successful. But someone from his past, a guy named Damien, played by Jonathan majors, reenters his life and Adonis feels compelled to try to help him get back into boxing. But not everything is as it seems in the dynamics in that relationship. So they are really the focus of this movie and luckily Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan majors are just really great together. They make formidable foes and of course it all leads to a huge, huge, important boxing match at the very end. Of course it does. So what did you think of Michael B. Jordan's directorial debut? I thought he did a really nice job. He keeps everything kind of on good pace. The story moves along very, very well. The boxing scenes are really, really compelling. Following and Ryan coogler's footsteps who directed the first creed, I think he's doing a very good job. Excellent. Switching gears to a streaming miniseries, it's based on a book with the same name, tell us about daisy Jones and the 6. So this was a very popular novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid that's now been made into a limited series. The novel was written as though it was an oral history of an actual band in the 70s, but obviously daisy Jones in the 6 didn't really exist. However, if they remind you a little bit of Fleetwood Mac, that's not your imagination. It is very similar in terms of the dynamics between the band members, the music in the show is very much 70s era. Riley Keough, who plays kind of the main character. She's terrific in this. And I have to say, I've seen all of it. And these songs, these new songs that they wrote. They do get stuck in your head. So it is a pretty entertaining limited series. On Skype, that's vulture critic, Jen chaney. 1218. Traffic

"If anyone's looked it up, but has anyone ever won coach of the year as essentially not the interim because they gave Jacques a contract. So he's not interim. But as the in season replacement and become coach of the year, it's been an impressive turnaround. It's due to a lot of things. We've talked about this, not to diminish anything as Jacques van has done. I think he's been the right voice in the right leader at the right time. But they got healthy. Ben Simmons started to get his game together, not so much recently. Let's see how they do with Durant out for two, three, four weeks, whatever it's going to be. That's going to impact how we view this. And right now, by the way, they're going to without Durant and kairi's been shrinking from the moment. So that's going to impact things. My next ban up on that ballot though, even possibly before Mike Brown might just be Willie green, they have seamlessly incorporated Zion back and as ions out, but bringing Zion in as a guy who had not even played with this group, right? It was almost like he was a new player to that team because they found their footing last season after the McCollum trade and the incorporated McCollum with Ingram. Then they bring in Zion. Now you got a big three, then Ingram's out. Zion's in. Like, a lot of youth on this roster. There's just a lot that Willie green has had to manage with this group. And I think he's done a fantastic job and then just to note this, the coach of the year race is always like 6, 7, 8 deep. Like there's always a bunch of good candidates depending on whether you're pulling from the top tier of teams or that middle tier where somebody's made a leap, all the guys we mentioned are going to be in this race. Missoula, as you mentioned, is in this race. I think Taylor Jenkins is in this race with the grizzlies. I think Michael Malone never gets enough credit for what the nuggets do year in year out, despite always having guys hurt, despite always having to reshuffle the deck despite a franchise star in jokic who you know is not going to be your defensive anchor. And you always have to try to patch things up around him. Like there's a lot of things that Michael Malone has to manage there that he just never gets enough credit for and probably should be on some balance as well. All right, so you would go Jacques Vaughn number one and just ahead of Willie green and Mike Brown, I think if we're doing the typical three man ballot. Okay. Yeah, yeah, look at that, that's a perfectly reasonable one thing. Jack bond's been instrumental to that team's success, settling that locker room, being kind of the respected guy in that locker room.

"The team that surprised us the most, right? So the Taylor Jenkins Memphis Grizzlies scenario and you were talking about that earlier. But we also have a bunch of those kinds of teams this year. The other category is occasionally a Greg Popovich actually wins it for being a great coach of a great team that one 60 plus games or something. But more often than not it goes from somebody who the team made a big leap and we couldn't see it coming. They made the most out of the least that that kind of category. And so drawing from both of those categories, there's some overlap too between the two, I came up with like 11 guys the other day, which is ridiculous. It's a third of the league. But that's where I'm sort of at. To me, the two hardest ones Howard this year, when I was looking at it, somebody had questioned me and I started looking at it. We're coach of the year and most improved player. I can do the other ones all pretty, pretty quickly and easily, at least get it narrowed down to a couple guys. But most improved in coach of the year to me are hard and I had a long list on coach of the year also. So this was my list. I'm sure they're similar. Taylor Jenkins, emea doka Mani Williams taron, JB bickerstaff, Mike Malone. Perennially underrated and underappreciated, I think, for what he's done there. We give jokic a lot of credit rightfully for what the nuggets have done with no Jamal Murray and Michael Porter junior, but Mike Malone keeping that thing together and getting the most out of the rest of the cast should be noted. Billy Donovan, Jason Kidd, Chris Finch, Steve Kerr, Eric spoelstra, all for different reasons or some similar reasons. Some of those I'm going to be able to knock out quicker than others, right? It's like, it's a three man ballot. Steve kerner exposed to probably won't be there at the end. I think I'm leaning pretty heavily toward Jenkins, you DOCA, I feel like ty Lou has to be on there. I voted for money Williams last year, thought he should have won. He actually had the most first place votes, but lost on points to tibs. I'm tempted to get money back in there again. But this is a really tough one this year. Stan, when you look at it, do you see it the same way that we in the media do at your part media now too, but you have the coaching background, do we lean too far sometimes toward the, oh wow, that team really surprised us so that guy's coach of the year, or do you kind of see it the same way? Yeah, no, sort of the same way. I think, again, I started with a long list to me, what Monty's done has been incredible. I mean, you know, 61 wins was still 7 games to go. And really impressive going 11 and four without Chris Paul. I thought that was an impressive streak and just how complete that team is and how disciplined that team is. I think it's been incredible. The thing with Taylor Jenkins and why putting at the top is I just haven't seen teams this young do this. Yeah. I mean, to be so good at both ends of the floor, you might get a yum team and you see their talent and their great offensively and their defense breaks down. But they're a top 5 or 16 at both ends of the floor..

"So if you go back to the beginning of the year, they started the year, they were 9 and ten. And they were last in the league defensively. And they're under 500. So jaw goes out and they go, I believe ten and two in that first stretch with him out and they go from last defensively to first defensively with him out. That was the turnaround. Then the defense when he came back dropped a little, but has been very, very solid. Even with him in the lineup all year, so it's not just that jaws a great player. He's unselfish. Guys love playing with him. I mean, I really struggle to figure it out. And a lot of Memphis fans like when I've tweeted about it in things, get upset. Like, oh well, they haven't played anybody when Josh out. I mean, they try to make excuses and I'm not ripping on John Moran. I love John Moran. I can't understand how this is even possible, but yes, they're scheduled has been a little weaker with him out. But they've still beaten good teams also, and they have destroyed people with him out. I mean, they're winning by 2030 every night. Their margin of victory is off the charts. It's hard to explain. Now, Titus Jones has had a remarkable year as a backup point guard. Perennial leader in assisted turnover ratio be a shot the ball better. You know, they get good shots and they're defense they can lean on in that attack mentality on both ends of the floor. So we talked about it on offense. They also lead the league in steals, blocks, turnovers forced. I mean, they are coming at you all the time and Taylor Jenkins has just done a fabulous job. I mean, there have been several, I think, sort of over the top coaching jobs this year, but Taylor Jenkins would be my choice for coach of the year based on what he's done with his team and with a guy that quality of John Moran being out 20 games and being able to win 90% of those. He's got my vote. I don't have a boat, but he would have my vote if I had one. We'll get to coach of the year later too. I definitely have a stupidly long list that I wanted to go through with you. At target, we come in for black owned coffee and leave with change in our hands..

"To go Jenkins for this one. And you know what it is for me? You know what it is for me, so he's my pick too. You know, I hinted a minute ago that I think bicker staff is very easily in the conversation. Billy Donovan, the bulls weren't in the playoffs last year, granted they added a lot, but they've also been without a lot for a lot of the season two with injuries, COVID. They lost Patrick Williams, the first week of the season or whatever it was. So I think he could be in the conversation. I think bolsters are really smart named having the conversation. But I keep coming back to Taylor Jenkins here, jaw, the record without jaw and not really looking fluky at all during that at all. In my opinion, like legitimate wins, 73 point wins without John morant. Have I been a little fluky a little weird, but so there was that, but also Dylan Brooks has missed a lot of time this year too. And it's gonna miss more time now. And it's like, they really don't miss a beat, which I feel like it's normally veteran teams that react that way. Right. Every now and then you get a little spurt here or there where gian green is out and then the rocket's going to run. It can happen, but it's normally fleeting, and then there's like a regression that's really hard where the rockets were terrible after that win streak. Everything about the grizzly seems legit, which I love that. And not to mention that, like you said, they beat the warriors last year. They're not afraid. That takes some maturation a little bit and I feel like it's a young team it's a relatively young coach but they don't they don't come across that way and I remember thinking at one point last year, there was a game. I think they lost a really horrendous game last year to the maps where they kind of I think Grayson Allen made like 9 mistakes in the last minute, but they weren't guarding particularly well. And I think Luca took an inbound pass with like a second or two left and I don't remember if you pump fake or he just kind of contorted his body in between a couple defenders from the grizzlies and he hit this game winning three, which created it was an amazing shot, but the grizzlies really didn't defend it very well, and they kind of gave up the lead at the end. And I remember thinking because I sat in on the Zoom call after and I remember thinking like listening to Taylor Jenkins and he like, I'm so used to covering the warriors and these other teams where you really come down and you really are critical of your team when you make mistakes to give up a game like that..

"The rest of this year and that seems pretty reasonable. Okay, the last team here. You just kind of love the spurs. I sell them against the rest of the west, but I love the spurs. I love the way my podcast partner and Nate Duncan put this earlier in the season, which is that the spurs are just good enough to lose, like to lose off of where it's like, I love their defense. And I think that they have the talent to make every team sweat, but they also just don't have the offensive firepower to win enough to make some real noise. There's a part of me that enjoys watching them, but jaka pearl's growth has been a real joy for me. I love center play, which is Ben one of the frustrations with times that lament where the leak is going, but it also leads to or watchable product. But San Antonio just, I don't think they have to juice offensively. What we've seen in the league is that teams without the offensive viability, it's just hard to be that dangerous. Just as it practical consideration. And so San Antonio, I get a lot of flack for raptors fans for talking about how I think a lot of their players would make more sense on other tubes than they do together. I think that same story is partially true with spurs, but there are guys just artists good. Yeah. No, I agree with that totally. The last team here, the Minnesota Timberwolves, or not the Minnesota Timberwolves Memphis Grizzlies, I'm sorry. Oh, I have Timberwolves on the brain. We love the Timberwolves here. The grizzlies buy, I think Taylor Jenkins is a coach. I think John morant is a star and whenever he is available again, they will be good offensively. And yes, Memphis has been a disaster overall defensively. They're now all the way up to 27th, including that demolition that they had to the thunder where the garbage filters can only filter out the fourth quarter. So they're not going to do the whole thing. So but I think there are a reasonably deep team I think they're well coach team. I think they're in that 40 to 45 one range and I'd love for them to be better than that, but I think they are that team. I think they're in the 40 to 45 win range. I sell them being the four seed, which is what they are right now. I don't necessarily see that. This is a team that still has a negative net rating, even after the insane blowout of the Oklahoma City Thunder, which is kind of crazy to me to be honest that they're 13 and ten, they've beaten a team by 73 points and still have a negative net rating..

"To the episode. So another thing that we get asked a lot about is confidence and i just think that we we hear a lot from podcast listeners. Who experienced imposter syndrome and have that inner critic they have a really hard time silencing so you've spoken about this another interviews that you've done and i'm really curious what advice you'd have for someone who's struggling with those things. Oh gosh yes. I think the first first thing that i personally had to do was really deep into. What are these stories that. I've told about myself to my salt. And where did they come from and unraveling a little bit of. That was incredibly helpful. I think the second is this concept of inner critic Is it tied to zere and whereas here coming from like what are you truly trade of and for me a lot of it was. I was afraid of what other people think. I thought they would laugh at me. I thought they'd say how dare she you know. I don't see each fast degree. I didn't come from some fancy to see brands I thought people would just laugh at me and say like how dare she comes up with something in. Does this look like who is she to do that. And i had to really spend a lot of time I as i said unraveling untying where that came from. And why wireless feeling that way. So i would highly recommend doing that. There's a book called. Silencing your credit by stone so for for people who are kind of read and work through it that book was super instrumental and then finally during this time i did work with a life coach for the first time in my life and that was also really game changing because she had me doing things that i would have historically thought were like oh fun and but kind of woo like neko vision board but she truly helped me manifest some of this century holiday which again sounds ridiculous but working with her. Help me push through a lot of blocks that i had created for myself. We're gonna move into some short and sweet questions to wrap up. I'm very curious to know. Do you have any other favorite food related startups on my so. Many but first and foremost seed in mill is a tahini brand. That is so delicious. It's women-owned they're based in new york. So any new yorkers listening to this they also have a chelsea market outpost where you can buy halwa. Tahini tahini saucer. There to knees are so delicious. And i think that with the bright honey there can be some magic that can be created. I've been mixing the two addington pistachios Eating it as a snack so love seton hill. There is a focus. Sunny hot sauce company that just launched called people people it's p. e. p. l. And they use a lot of the ingredients that come from traditional baucus sunny food. So i have. All three of their hot sauce does than i've been adding it to everything from like pizza too. You know any kind of like indian dish. That are south. Asian dish. That i make so i i wanna to give them a shout out to. Oh thank you awesome. I'm gonna we love supporting new businesses but especially if they're snack related. Yes i just took notes as you were talking a question. We ask everyone because the heritage of our podcast is in bucks. What are you reading right now. I just finished malibu. Rising by taylor jenkins read. I loved it. I thought it was a breezy fund. Delightful light read ahead just finished something that was white dunston heavy prior so reading. This was like really lovely. And i'm now reading. I'm in the midst of reading gold diggers by nights at the end. It's about an indian american family. And it's relatable heartwarming a little heart wrenching. It's really bad so far. Is it contemporary fiction historical contemporary. It just came out yeah gold diggers just came out. I think six months ago okay. Cool back at you when asked the million dollar question. Oh i wanna let you ask the million dollar question something. Everyone wants to know becca. I want you to ask it okay. So by far the most popular questions when we put out the call for questions was can we get a promo and we know firsthand that. That's not something that you really do. But we also know that you're going to give our listeners a pro because we talked about it before i start reporting. Yes yes as you said. This is something we really do not do. It's because of being a small business and having the margins that we do ensued. But i am so. I just adore you and grace and the community that y'all built and so yeah use bad on paper for a code for the fall to stock up on some honey and all oil and vinegar and all your all the good staff and what does that get you. Do we know yet okay. We don't know what else is going to be like a surprise like it's like on social media we'll put it on social too but it's like It's almost like a scratch off ticket. Really bad at speculating on people's ages. I said a few weeks ago that i thought tanks twenty six and i think she's thirty two so i don't i feel like this is much younger than me like i would say. She's twenty five. But what do i know anyway. Her account focuses a lot on personal finance. And what i really like is how transparent she is about her finances and she also tracks her net worth and shares it like openly which is such a bold fucking move but if you like the type of content we do whenever we talk about money. I think you'll really like this account and especially if you're a little bit younger. Some of the stuff she posts about. I don't necessarily relate to like she lives in a studio apartment and she's definitely like young. She feels younger than me but I just i love. Seeing women openly talked about money and personal finances. What is your regular obsession. Oh my my regular obsession is a tv show. So i discovered this tv show. "It was kind of you know. And so and so. You'll see you know people that that have read evelyn. Hugo and daisy jones with a with a keen eye will pick up on certain characters that are mentioned that are you know i wouldn't some of them aren't even like tertiary characters in evelyn hugo. It's like we're we're talking like really far down the list but you can piece it together though connections. That are here. But the thing that i did with this book that i've never done before or approached differently. Even if the result is the same is that you know like you're saying the story goes hour by hour so we start at seven. Am and we see the day leading up to the riva party and then the reba party starts and we see the twelve hours after and then we come to story ends at the next day at the same time and once you get to the party. I started to write these little character profiles where it's like well. Who's showing up at this party. Who are the hollywood people that are gonna come and so you have characters that i made up. That are if you go through it. I think it is a fun little game of being able to see like okay. You know the was one character. Tuesday hendricks and and she's a young sort of on jonnu. She's already won an oscar. She's had of runaway bride situation She's got a drug problem and so it's like you. Can you can go through the list of like early. Eighties actresses that were like just becoming famous at that time and i think piece together like oh this might be a little bit of this wine and a little bit on that one and a little bit of that one more. Like there's there's some other people like there's a screen writer and you can start to piece that together or these two actors that show up. And i think they all have different feels but it. I think it can be a fun game to pull back in and be like. Oh who could this be and not. There's not a single one. That is one particular person. They're all kind of malcolm in the same way like days jones is like is it fleetwood. Mac yes and no it's also like like heart and abba and the eagles and whatever you can get into some fun like brat packers with this one. I love that. I really love that something..

"And i know people don't i mean i guess i shouldn't generalize. Sometimes they do but more often than not people don't mean to be intrusive or abusive. Sure but the number of times. I have met someone who would describe themselves as a quote fan. Who has touched me without asking. I had someone literally reach out. Grab my face and run their fingers through my hair. The way your spouse is supposed to and this was a person who had never seen of until three seconds before it happened. I mean and and i and i know that that is proximal to what a character like this one. You know someone who's defined as a model who's essentially defined as alive mannequin. Yeah who we project. All of our ideas and fantasies onto as an actor people see you move and speak and in relationship granted. They're made up but they still know you're a person in in some way and so i'm i'm so fascinated by this idea of how we commodified people and how we then tell them they should like it. Oh yeah well. It's really interesting to me. So you're you're you're themes about women and how in a way. They're admonished for their success. You know whether it's daisy jones talking about her identity and people essentially saying like you're a rockstar over it and there's always some version of that so there's there's the identity vertical that i love about your work there. Is this bucket about time and and you know you mentioned the seven husbands of evelyn. That novel goes back and forth between decades in past and current time and then and then in this new book. Malibu rising which we're beginning to talk about which by the way came out today so if you all have not preordered it you absolutely should be ordering it today because i was very lucky. My friend taylor sent me an advanced copy. Which i got to devour but this book literally goes hour by hour. And there's something about that structure of time that makes me feel so stressed but glennon doyle uses that term skated where she's like scared and excited all at once. And that's how. I felt going through this and i. I'm really really curious about some things again not to sound like i have just been keeping lists but i sort of have on your work there. Are these mentions that. Feel like easter eggs. Yeah for fans of your previous References back to. Evelyn hugo you mention seal his saint james an mkx riva and there are all these rumors that your books are based on real people. And i know we're not gonna talk about that with previous. Do we get to talk about it with this book it. You know it's funny. This book is sort of. Like because i am a few into this pattern. Now i understood where the interest would be and so it's actually a about no one in particular but was way more fun to play with in terms of so for instance like the book is about the riva family. It's four siblings. They're all surfers are living in malibu. They're abandoned by their famous father. Mick wrva and mick. Riva is evelyn. Hugo's third husband so reba exists in evelyn hugo. He's mentioned in a scene in daisy jones. And now we're getting the story of his and the riva kids were now all adults. They're throwing their annual riva party. It's like the hollywood party to end parties. The party everybody you know wants to be seen at and there's a lot of celebrities that are gonna come and so so as well. The first thing is that. I've created a world of all these fake celebrities and i'm not gonna do double work if i already have all these other fake celebrities that i can put it this party. Let me use some of them..

"Likes it and i distinctly remember i got in. The shower was bawling my eyes out. I wrap myself in a towel. Put my hearing. How i lay down on my bed and i was like do i. Just give up. Because the only agent that i have is not going to go out with this book and i'm getting messages. That may be. What i think is good is not good have already failed once and so when i was a kid. I was really really obsessed with Lucille ball. I i watched. I love lucy all the time and i got just really like i read every single biography and autobiography. There was like you know other kids were like playing in the pool. And i was like reading lucille. Ball's autobiography just obsessed with her. And as not a book reader. That was huge. That like that. But like i was that dedicated to that and when lucy. I don't know how old she was but it was before she broke into hollywood she was in an acting school and i believe one of her classmates was bette davis and the teacher at the acting. School writes home to her. Mom i think and says i cannot keep taking your money. Lucille has no talent and does never going to get anywhere and lucy had to decide what to do and she. If my memory's correct she thought about giving up and then she decided that person didn't know what they were talking about and she found another school to go to and eventually signed with our ko. And and you know after that you know. In her in her forties late thirties and early forties became who we know as you know as lucy ricardo basically and i'm laying in bed that day and i'm in a towel and i'm sobbing and i'm just going you know what would loosen and lucy i knew lucy would have would have found another agent and so i thought well. Can i do that or am i ready. Just let this dream go. And i said well i got a. I still have it in me right now to do to do what lucy would have done. And so i- parted ways with that agent. I parted ways with manager. I went on blind submission to like thirty different agents and found one. Who understood what i was trying to do. And within a year sold forever interrupted to simon and schuster. And i think back on that moment all the time because it was a huge turning point for me and i could have made either decision. It really felt like i was on offense and it was like it was being tipped one way or the other and i just happened. I just luckily tipped myself. You know in would. Hindsight feels like the right the right direction but i have found immense i. I guess fortune in betting on myself. And i think failing doesn't mean that you can't just double down. I think i have a good sense of my god when something is good or if it's not and believing in yourself and having that gut sense means you can whether you can get knocked down a few times and it's a little bit easier to get up if you're not sure if you're good then yeah you might stay on the ground and i think i think that's the thing that's gotten me. Through is a competence of like mill. This is good. I do things on their bad. Sometimes i can read them. That was bad but you know it's having that confidence of like this one's good. I could do this. But i think that's important too is when you're honest with yourself.

"I wanna ask a question that i imagine. Many of our listeners at home are wondering which is you know. Your first novel didn't sell. I imagine that was really hard. How did you get over that. How did you motivate yourself. You start over. And how did you not take that criticism and internalize it or maybe. It wasn't even criticism by the way but generally it feels like it is when someone says no. So how do you metabolize that event. And then become a new york times bestseller and and yeah he nailing it. How does it work you know. I'm actually really glad you've asked this question. Because it i really have a very concrete and specific answer for this. And i realized the story that have never really told anybody. So my first book didn't sell. I was disappointed. And look every time you get afforded email. That's like thanks much for sending us this. Ultimately this story felt a little trite or whatever. It's like. Okay how you know but when the ends with you know we'd like to see something else it's like okay you know what like get up move on you know and so. I wrote this book which became forever interrupted. And i had this agent. Who was the agent who had read my first book and offered me representation. I had never searched for anybody. It was like this woman just appeared in my life. And i was. I couldn't believe i was lucky. I write this forever interrupted and the promise of forever. Interrupted was a lot different than than the first book that i've written the first book that i've written was basically was written from point of view of this young man and he's in love with his best friend and how's he going to tell her and then chaos ensues and then i was like well. The next thing i want to ride is about a young woman who elopes with her husband. My husband and i hit eloped. And so i really wanted to write about that rush of like meeting someone in knowing i wanted to write that but i wanted to write a tragedy and so i was like so totally different than my life but also a little bit. I went through period of time. Long story short where. I was so happy with my husband that i was convinced. Something terrible was about to happen. Because how can i possibly be happy really cuts that speaks to me. I'm like oh yeah deep anxiety. Yep i know what that is. Yes so i exercise that by writing this book where basically is called forever. She meets this guy. They elope love for life but then he dies in an accident about nine days after they and show she has to deal with a number of things but one of them being her mother law that she's never met before and so i wrote that book senate to my agent. She didn't like it and she gave me around notes. Ride took those notes to the best that i could. She gave me another round of notes and and basically her feeling was. I think it was more like. I'm not saying it's a page one rewrite but was kind of you. Know the vibe. And she didn't like what i was doing she wasn't into it. I i was. I was just devastated. She wasn't going to take it out on submission unless it was something. She was passionate about what she should absolutely do. Like bats no question. She should not do something she didn't believe in. And i did believe in it and then i had this this other person who was kind of like a manager in my career and i was like well. Did you like it. And she was like. I didn't finish it man. And i was like oh god and i just kept going like i think this book is good but.

"It's a really complicated thing when talk about the patriots. The patriarchy hurts everyone This is an example of. I'm often going. Am i not doing enough in an shouldn't i be doing more. I'm the mom. Doesn't that mean. I need to be doing most of the child care. You know and my husband's like i enjoy it. I like being with her kid. I love taking her to the park. I love hanging out with her. And so i'm beating myself up for not doing more you know. And there's a world where. Alex could beat himself up. Because i'm bringing more money and it's like whatever this idea of how marriage is supposed to work ours and work that way. It just doesn't. And if i if i wanted to compare myself to that standard we would be failing but we're thriving so like yeah like that's so interesting because when you say well you know. I beat myself up about time. And he could beat himself resources. And i'm like but isn't it crazy that we've been all of us have been essentially trained cultured to beat ourselves up for what's going great. He's yelling it you're nailing it and that's exactly it and the thing that i have decided in my head which i think is sort of funny but when i get in my space of like oh am i working too much or is my asking. Alex do too much or whatever. I just changed the words in my head for a moment and like okay. I'm the dad. And alex is the mom. Are we meeting those expectations. And it's like. Oh my god. I if i if what are you miss a dad. I'm the world's best. Dad are such a good debt. If i'm comparing myself eighties. Dad like i'm such a good dad. You know it's like you know and so it gives me a moment of like okay so these are just made up. Words like the point is like is my child taking care of ish. Does she feel love. Does she had time with both her parents. Like and yes you know and like can we pay our bills. Are we both fulfilled. Yes and the times in which i feel insecure about it or the time which the idea of should gets into my head. A woman should inherently be these things. It's still a voice in my head. And i have to battle and it's not something that comes out passively it has to be excised and so that is like having a kid made it much worse for me because i think as a woman. I had so many messages about motherhood just just me that had been there. You know that that society had been putting their since day one and it's been a process of removing those but talking to other women helps because you realize like oh you also your your marriage also functioned like that. Oh there's actually a lot of marriages that function like that. It's not that different but we just never talk about that and now for our sponsors and.

"I moved out to los angeles. I think i got here like a week. After my twenty first birthday. And i got a job in casting. And it was an absolute blast. It was so much fun. But i worked in casting for both years and during that period of time i just wanted to get the feeling that there was something else long-term that i wanted to do and i had started writing small things here and there just like for fun just like to entertain my friends. Like here's a funny story or sending sending a funny email or whatever. And then i was like what if i tried to right. What if i would if i tried to write. What if that's what i'm trying to do is like it's still part of that early process but what if i'm the person making the characters would have. I'm the person who's deciding what the story is. I fiddled around with like a screen. Play had written a tv episode or two and i was like this is now not and then and then i finally decided okay. I'm going to write a short story and that was it. That was when. I figured it out and i was about twenty four twenty five and that short story ended up becoming a novel and by sent it to a few friends and they sent it to a few friends of theirs and people were starting to read it and they seem to like it and i got a little bit more confident you know. And then it made its way into the hands of this agent Who was like. I like to represent you. Let's try to sell this and i was like. Okay wow this is happening like you know. It all started coming together and in. That book didn't sell but it was. It was really encouraging it. Was you know we don't want this. But if she has something else we'd like to read it and at that point i felt really i knew i was like i'm ready to double down on this..

"As a writer like what came before you. There's some things you just have to decide. You're going to buckle down and read but on a day to day basis. Like you know i i certainly right books with the hope that it brings people joy and not every book is right for each person. And if it doesn't bring you joy you know. Set yourself free and put the book down time. I'm so curious about your story because you know we know you as this bestselling author. Who's speaking of adaptations. You know whose work is being adapted by reese witherspoon and other sort of hollywood icons There's there's so much that you've done. But i want to know where it began. Were you always in relationship to books. You know who. Who is taylor as a kid growing up in massachusetts. Who did you know you're introverted. Then you paint me a picture of what was happening when you were. I don't know nine or ten. Yeah well no. I was not in relationship with books. I'm not one of those authors. Who has the very romantic story of you know i would. I would be under the covers of the flashlight reading a book after my parents told me to go to bed. That was not me So i was born in maryland and lived there. My parents divorced. When i was very very young and we lived in maryland until i was about twelve we will go back and forth from maryland massachusetts. Basically and like my mom was mostly massachusetts. My dad was maryland. And and when i turned twelve we left maryland. Just set down finally in massachusetts and so. That's where i feel like i'm from that's where my formative memories really take place and that's where my lasting friendships are. I mean i didn't get into reading in any real earnest way like there were a few books that meant something to me. Throughout my teenage years. I got really into bricolate like Helen fielding and nick hornby. And but i was watching tv. That's that's what i was doing though that was my my storytelling.

I work continues to come out with some fantastic quotes. He's awesome yeah. I liked bitcoin. Lamelo has looked really good which it shouldn't be a surprise. I just thought he was going to be more inefficient than he has been Which maybe that's unfair me. But i thought you know coming in of that. That was a possibility. Emmanuel quickly has actually been really good. He's only playing three games for the next. But you shown more on ball equity than i initially pictured They ran them at point. Guard a little bit kinda surprising me considering more of like a panic combo guard. He looked good. I mean obviously call anthony. We talked about earlier. His shot selection hasn't been awesome to start. But i've liked him. Jay sean tait who. I guess he's not really a rookie. But jesus is fun. I like jay sean. Tait a lot.
