"Too many TVs, kitchen appliances, and hoodies. Stores like target and Walmart have been working their way through a glut. Stockpiles of stuff that people really wanted during the pandemic until suddenly they didn't. NPR's Alina souk reports. You might be wondering, didn't we talk about shortages for the past two years? Yes, and that's actually part of the story. There's a hot term in retail these days. The bullwhip effect. To explain it, let's go to this kitchen appliance aisle at a Target Store in Lincoln Nebraska. There is an air fryer that's half price basically, $55, save $45. The bull whip effect is part of why is on sale. Here's how it works. In the pandemic, people went crazy for air fryers. When demand jumps like that, stores order from suppliers and suppliers order from factories. And each step of the way they order or make more and more and more, until abruptly, we have too many air fryers right when people are kind of done buying them. And then suddenly we have a good surplus inside of a good shortage. Rachel brima follows the supply chain for the logistics outlet freight waves. Her own shopping habits perfectly illustrate how this played out across lots of products. For the past two years, she spent her stimulus dollars and money saved from not going out on stuff. I bought a blender, this desk in this chair that I'm sitting in right now. Yeah. The stuff she won't buy again for years. And now, like so many people, she's spending mainly on travel, weddings, and family visits, and she's trying to save more as prices keep rising. It's almost as if the retailers and manufacturers were not expecting this. Of course, they were just with varying degrees of success. Inventory ordering is an imperfect science at best. Mark Matthews is with the national retail federation. If you think about it, you're ordering goods three, 6, even 9 months in advance. Retailers based their forecasting on historical behavior, but there is no template for what consumer behavior looks like coming out of a pandemic. That means some stores are still facing shortages, like canned pet food, for example. But others have a glut of certain items. Gap, for example, said it got stuck with too many fleece hoodies and athleisure, right when office workers went back to suits and dresses. But mainly the mismatch is affecting the big box stores. Target has publicly said it overstocked on TVs, outdoor furniture, electronics, and fitness supplies. So maybe we've seen a little bit of over ordering, but we've also seen, you know, maybe not the right assortment. What does that mean now? Well, shoppers might see sales on some random items at big box stores or online. Some goods are going to liquidators, or discount stores, but it also means another chaotic year for suppliers, like Curtis McGill from the small Texas toy company called hey buddy hey pal. You could say for being in the toy business. This lasts probably 12 months has not been as much fun as it should be. He says many stores are cautious now about placing future orders, partly because of inflation uncertainty, but partly because they don't really want to spend on new stuff when they're already spending to store all those old stuff. It's recently as yesterday morning we had a commitment from one of the larger retailers that was rescinded to completely. In the next few weeks, new data will show how long this inventory glut might last, says Jason Miller, who tracks all this at Michigan state university. Now what we're seeing is some initial evidence that the retailers that build up a glut of inventory are starting to get things under control. He says last year's shopping frenzy has definitely slowed down. But people are still buying more products than they did before the pandemic. Alina selig and beer news linked in Nebraska. And you're listening to here and now.

"That's a factor, I don't really address as part of the HSAs, but you just did. I'm a big fan of Costco too, but I live 70 miles from the nearest one with the cost of gas that is hard to justify going there on a regular basis. We have a local Walmart, but it's old dirty and not a good experience. I don't like going there. You never mentioned target as an alternative to these stores. Why not? I find their prices pretty well in line with Costco and Walmart, and that's from Walter. Walter, thank you. And target by his published finances has a higher markup on its goods than Walmart and Walmart has a much higher markup than the cost of goods at Costco. Target is obviously an environment that people find much, much more pleasing than Walmart. I mean, that's just a fact. It's something that has been a thorn in Walmart side. Forever is that people find the environment of target much more pleasing, much more appealing. Not to mention that there are a lot of women who just love target. They can be feeling down and they go to a Target Store and just walking around, not even buying anything. Somehow they feel better. I don't know what target puts in the air conditioning system. Women feel that way. Are you one of those people? I love target. Yes. What? What? I don't know. I mean, they have nice clothes. I like their clothes. Just got to dress there this weekend. So there's just something about it. You started smiling right now, talking about target. I don't get it. I walk in there as a guy and it's just like and I have the 5% card there. Okay, I don't really think your advice to call her unplugged his electrical devices when he went away was wrong, but recently my house was nearly hit by lightning and I lost a TV garage door opener laptop computer. My underground Internet cable and a few other items, even though some of these pieces were on search protectors, it was inadequate protection against such a large spike. Granted, this is a rare case, but if the equipment was unplugged, they would not have been damaged, so I feel this may be of some interest to your listeners. Some electric suppliers offer whole house search protectors, and that's from Robert. Robert, thank you. The last two houses that we lived in, we had whole house search protectors put in, and it was because of this reason. It's not cheap to put in a whole house search protector. Maybe the individual who's unplugging things when they go away on a trip is doing it for a factor that I just ignored because I was only thinking about the cost. So I appreciate that because again, that's why we do Clark stinks. That's why we're all collectively members of team Clark because we all learn from each other and there are times that I'll give advice that maybe is too many or I miss that extra element. That's why we so appreciate it when you take that time to go to Clark dot com slash Clark stinks and post.

"Bloomberg quick takes Tim Steven from Bloomberg radio Shares a petco rallying this past week after the company revealed earnings beats on both the top and bottom line for the fourth quarter and it upped its full year outlook for adjusted earnings and revenues Okay we all know this Pets all the rage during the pandemic I know somebody sitting close to me right now who got a new doggie Got a new puppy You did how's your puppy done Really good Okay good Well it seems very well Really well yeah Well probably good and well If it's being trained well right Yes Well it does seem that the trend is continuing even as the threat of COVID wanes With more on how the business achieved a 7th consecutive quarter of double digit comp store sales growth We spoke with petco chairman and CEO of petco Ron Coughlin We made a big bet that we were going to develop an ecosystem of the full offering that pet parents want So we have our own vets We have grooming We have training We have supplies We have food and we do it in stores We also do it digitally And that was a big bet versus trying to be expert at one part of the thing which is what basically everyone else does And 54% of pet parents say that's what they want They want to partner to manage their pet lives I'm sure it's not easy for you I used to go to one place for a bet one place for a grooming One place where food my hunches you probably do that right now Kind of still do Yeah But I do a lot online in terms of products And that simplifies my world Yeah but if you could do it all in one place and then that company knows you and knows your data and the groomer knows the same thing that the vet knows we take better care of you And so that strategy is working The second thing that's working is our omnichannel strategy 80% of our online orders get fulfilled through our pet care centers We call the micro distribution centers That means there's faster to the customer and lower cost Does that mean they walk into or no It's separate distribution centers So there's three Your local petco right It had three different versions One we might ship from that store to you if you order it online Two you could same data delivery which you can't do online or three you might go in and pick it up if you're short on order Oh I need to get food I'm a way home and bopa is just like you order ahead on your Starbucks as an example So that's really working for us And then our vet business is working And we had a big announcement last week We had a joint venture with a vet partner and we bought them out last week We announced it And so we're bringing 800 veterinary professionals into our system And one of the biggest questions I get from investors is can you hire enough vets and you might have hired my vet who we loved and adored and who became part of a bigger practice and then is gone Our investors seeing the story though are the hearing this story because the stock is doing well today but it did hit a record low in late February It's down 30% from its highs of last year What are investors missing here Yeah I mean we got caught in some of the market downturn that happened And we just need to prove it over time And that's why I'm so proud of the 7 quarters of double digit growth with the margin expansion And also our bullishness was evidenced by our guide which was above consensus There were people who questioned whether we could grow in the second half of the year We did so at double digit rate there were people who questioned whether we can lap next year and we showed a big you know a nice guide going forward that people appreciate And I think that's why the stock is responding In addition to the fact that I think that there is a premium for companies that can execute in these times Whether it's the labor issues whether it's the different economic issues people who can execute it or getting a premium right now What segment of your business sees the biggest growth Because she talked about a couple of different things And there's omnichannel There's digital There's in the store There's the vet services They're selling pets What is it What is it that really juices the top and bottom line And profitability I love all my kids And that's some I love a little bit more The truth is they're all growing But if you look at our digital business we grew a 143% on a two year basis We more than doubled our digital business in the last two years I mean that's astounding How often do you more than double a business that already had scale in two years We did a 25 last quarter So how much of revenues is digital Purely digital Yeah digital is between 15 and 20% And how much of somebody who is digital then walks in the store What are you looking for When you're omnichannel I was just talking to chipotle They're omnichannel right They have chipotle and your digital only You can go to the store You can use the app There's all these different things How many how many people are going to the stores buying online You want somebody who's all in That's the way the world is going So if I go through the recent sequence 2000 happened and everyone went online right Even my father who loves going to source all of a sudden became an online customer for the first time Then in 21 people thought maybe they won't come back They came back to our stores in droves And more and more it is this omnichannel customer We call it retail three where you really bring this promise around your channel that we've all been talking about for years Together not only for that experience but also as fulfillment centers You hear target talking about using their targets as fulfillment centers It's killer the strategy got me to go to a Target Store in a long time And we truly believe we're one of "O'Hare 39 in both midway and along the lakefront 38 in both Kenosha and waa Keegan it's 35 and crystal Lake I'm Gabe Salvador when Chicago's very own 7 20 WGN Doctor Jennifer sah chief medical officer at the Chicago department of public health is on a phone line Doctor thanks for joining us on WGN Good morning Great to be here We were talking about what's in and what's out on that list I suppose that was somewhat subjective for you all huh You had to sit down and say okay what do we include What do we exclude Well it wasn't subjective These are higher risk indoor settings and just to clarify it's settings primarily where you would have to take your mask off because you're going to be eating or drinking or some of these other higher risk areas where we know people are going to be breathing more heavily such as gyms So the strategy here was to target those higher risk indoor settings Of course everyone should be wearing a mask in a public indoor setting right now But in these areas where you may need to take off your mask because you need to eat or drink That is where we really want to make sure everyone was vaccinated because as we all know cases have been rapidly rising omahan is here and what we really need to do is protect our healthcare system in addition to our Chicago residents But protect our healthcare system so that we can continue to take care of our Chicago residents should they need that higher level care Yeah I get that point And I think you've answered my question nicely What's the common thread here in its places where you might have your mask off to eat drink or breathe heavily which then answers the question why not a Target Store but because you can shop with a mask on at a Target Store right That's right That's exactly right But then what about schools What about going to the high school basketball game What's the rule going to be there Yes a schools in general have been excluded because education of course is essential When people go to a basketball game if they are a spectator that is an indoor setting So they need to be wearing their masks And the recommendation has been for indoor sports unless it's going to be dangerous For example in wrestling it's like the mask may get tangled and could potentially be a hazard They need to be wearing those masks indoors as well You know you've probably noticed I have two that when I see a snapshot in the local paper of kids playing high school basketball the master all down by their chins and I wondered what the sense of that is That's almost impossible for the kids to keep it on They sure choose not to And it's hard to police for the officials you know Yeah It is challenging You have to do the best we can to make sure that anyone is wearing their masks properly But the most important thing is that we do have a tool that can protect us all against the COVID virus and that is vaccination So if these athletes make sure that they're getting vaccinated that would protect them even more in schools many schools have put in a requirement that either you have to be vaccinated to play these higher risk sports or that you need to test regularly So there are additional safety measures there But the most important thing is to get vaccinated It will protect you against having to be hospitalized We don't want to lose another chicagoan to COVID-19 Understood And is this much different than New Orleans San Francisco New York I mean you know we're all kind of getting our head around it starting January 3rd but this is not unique to the USA right That's correct And we turn to some of our big city sister cities like New York LA to see what they had already done in terms of crafting their policies And so there is some precedent here We use their thinking that they had already done and tailored it to the Chicago situation But this is not unique There is certainly a nationwide recognition Again because Omar Khan is here we need to really buckle up We need to do all the things we can to protect our residents and to protect our hospital system so that we can continue taking care of our Chicago residents From the city's department of public health doctor Jennifer Jennifer says on a phone line do you have any idea doctor how long these requirements are going to be in place It's to be determined because again Omar Khan is here the cases are rapidly rising We do expect to have a very very very busy January in terms of our healthcare system And so we'll have to see But the sooner more people get vaccinated as long as people can make sure they're doing all the safety mitigation measures wearing their mask when they're in those public indoor settings limiting gatherings where you don't need to gather We will get out of this sooner So QB determined but we felt that we had to do our duty to protect our city by implementing this requirement so that we could protect them and again very importantly protect our hospital system How will I be asked to demonstrate that I'm vaccinated Can I show my phone Can I have a laminated miniaturized version of my vax card What constitutes proof here So there are different ways people can show their proof they can show the actual vaccination card If you have a picture of it on your phone or there is a digital record and one of those little apps you can use that It can be a photocopy of your vaccination card It can be a printed record because I know many people have lost those little light cards from the CDC You can ask your provider your healthcare provider who gave you the vaccine to provide you a record of your vaccination So many different ways that people can provide their proof of vaccination And if you're not vaccinated then it's up to those staffs to deny you entrance right That's right Yes So we are working with our partners at the business and consumer protection department They will be helping us support the businesses to ensure that this vaccination requirement is properly implemented throughout the city Okay that's the latest of doctor Jennifer chief medical officer at the Chicago department of public health Doctor thank you Thank you Stay well Double your dream Here is doctor Robert.

"With a target Ulta Beauty train team member who are beauty experts and we're creating this new ecosystem. You know, they've had over 90 million circle members in their program. And you combine that with our strong loyalty program. We were loving what we're seeing with the linkage of circle members linking their Ulta Beauty accounts. So it's just creating this whole ecosystem. We could not be more pleased with how we're working together operationally, how we're really seeing this ecosystem really come to life. And I think the best is yet to come. When you think about the atmosphere, I mean, obviously, you work to target for many years before coming into Ulta. You know, they were obviously on track to elevate their own assortment in beauty. But I think what you really offer them is this gravitas, right? You know, these prestige brands, the best of the best. You know, how is your maybe regular Ulta consumer respondent? You know, the ability and the convenience been able to go to Ulta or go to target for ostensibly some of the same products. Yeah, you know, I think convenience is always really important to our members. And we know that our beauty members shop other places for some of their quick trip runs that they have along the way. This just keeps them within that ecosystem within Ulta Beauty. And again, let me remind you that it's a curator assortment. So they don't have a full breath of assortment in the cultivated target stores. It's highly curated. It's some of the top sellers, but we're going to bounce them back into Ulta Beauty for the remain beauty shopping needs. And also when, you know, new guests are going by the Ulta Beauty at target presentation. It puts our brand in front of so many more deaths that are coming into the target stores on a weekly basis. And it gives them the opportunity to use their loyalty and the rewards points because that's they can only redo those points back in the LGBT store. So it gives them an opportunity to bounce back in and come and see what the full assortment and experience around services and products of our 25,000 SKUs, 600 brands in the full storm, 'cause it's really highly curated in the Ulta Beauty at Target Store. So we really do feel that the guest is going to continue to remain a member of Ulta Beauty going forward in our loyalty program and it just gives us an opportunity to reach even more. Tell me a little bit about convenience because that's something we talked a lot about last year during COVID. Everybody was shipping everything to their homes. You know, our poor garbage man and dormant, like all the boxes, you know, has just been outrageous, but at the same time, people are really equated convenience with luxury. You know, and obviously you have a prestige positioning and Ulta. What do you think that combination means today? Yeah. Well, we're really encouraged by opportunities to really maximize beauty baskets across mass and prestige. So we believe that we're offering something for everyone across all those categories and all those price points. And, you know, seeing value and introducing new guests to new categories as they shop is really top of mind always for us. And, you know, what we found is that when guests shop all categories, they're not just a master or they're not just a prestige, but when they're shopping more categories across the portfolio, they're spending ten times more than guests who only shop one. So we really love what we're seeing in the gas behavior, you know, coming into our stores and seeing that they've got the whole portfolio of brands from the 25,000 plus products and over 600 brands. You come into the store and it's kind of like that beauty shopping experience and environment that, you know, we are offering to our guests that just continues to give them this broadest assortment of anything that they feel like they need to have to make themselves feel better. We're going to take a quick break to hear from our sponsor. Do you have a good measure of how your influencer marketing program is performing against your competitors? Tracker has a free interactive app that ranks over 1000 beauty brands by influencer marketing performance on a monthly basis. Go to leaderboard dot tracker dot com and search your brand name to see where you rank. You can toggle across leaderboards for the U.S., UK and France and find out more information about a specific influencer program and metrics by clicking on a brand's name. That's leaderboard dot TR AAC KR dot com. When you think about the 92 stores that you guys are currently operating in, you know, what do you want to do more of? I mean, do you think, I mean, obviously, I know there's a lot more stores on the docket, but in terms of experience in the stores or the way that sales associates are interacting with customers at target. You know, what are some learnings there that you think or opportunity there? You know, we're really leaning into the training, the education, the brand experience. And like I said, we're early out of the gates, but what I love that I see is the partnership between Ulta Beauty and target. We're in this to win together. And we also wanted to be a big win for our brands. So, you know, we're continuing to work together to take feedback and improve always and I just really think that this is going to grow into something that's continued to be very unique disruptive in the beauty environment. And a huge win for all the parties that are participating between the guest, the brand partners, target and Ulta Beauty. Speaking of some of those more tactical things, like the DoorDash announcement that you guys made this week. I mean, same day was livery seems like it's table stakes now. I mean, do you think that this is going to be a bigger portion? Alongside with bopis and curbside, do you think that's going to be a bigger portion of the business, just that people are discovering maybe online and then purchasing and using these more convenient options to purchase in store? Absolutely. We look at the customer journey is a 360 experience all the way around, whether it's they start on the mobile device on their phone doing an online type purchase that they decide to pick up in the store to coming into the store and scanning a QR code to get some additional information to interacting with the service provider or the beauty associates in the store. I mean, it's this whole 360 ecosystem that we really do feel is going to be the differentiator for us in the overall shopping experience. And we want to meet the guests where they are. And how they want to be met. And that's our focus going forward. Talk to me about holiday Keisha. You know, everyone seems to be so excited for the season just because obviously, last year was a little bit more tempered. But at the same time, there seems to be a lot of logistical tics that brands and retailers are going through. You know, what are you experiencing over at Ulta in terms of supply chain, the ports, you know, getting brands to hit their orders on time and all of that. Yeah. Well, we do have a really strong supply chain infrastructure. I could not be more proud of our supply chain or team and organization. But you know, we're not immune to the supply chain constraints, such as pork congestion and other headwinds. But one thing that I'm really proud of are entire team and between the merchants, the merchandise planning and our supply chain and store teams is that we worked proactively together because we saw these headwinds that were coming and we were hearing early on that people were going to be shopping earlier for Christmas. And we wanted to make sure that we were ready for the guests and to get it through our supply chain network. We've worked really hard to make sure first and foremost that we were staffed in our DCs. And I'm really pleased to say we are we're fully staffed in our distribution centers. So, you know, the challenges that I'm hearing out there that you're hearing in regards to staffing in our head of that. The other challenge is just making sure that we were proactively building some orders through our brands and we were making sure that there was this visibility on purchase orders to make sure that we could get them through the ecosystem early and maybe even take some of our Reese's a little earlier than what we had in the past. We are positioned very well with holiday. I feel really great about the store traffic that we're seeing. I just think that this is going to be a.

"That's the reason. There's no better reason. Why people vote to ruin their own cities. It's a phenomenon. Back in a moment, the Dennis prager show. Turn all of the lights on over. Hi, everybody. It's an amazing question that I have posed here at this opening hour of the show. A lot of people vote to ruin their cities when they vote Democrat they do that. The report from San Francisco is astonishing, and people will still vote Democrat. It's almost unbelievable. How the stores are closing en masse in. San Francisco. And let's see, target now, you know, that's the one. Target. Iconic Target Store in mission street to close amid shoplifting, tidal wave. And people will still vote Democrat. People will still vote for people like gascon and other district attorneys who believe that you don't prosecute somebody if they stole $900 worth. Wow. Yep. Out of ruin your own life. Your own city. Kevin and San Francisco says Republicans don't even put their name out, so he has stuck to vote for some communist or hippie. That's an interesting question. I'd like to like to pursue that. If that's the case, Republicans not even putting out a nominee. Martha in Los Angeles her best friend did not know what woke meant. It's an interesting point. They don't know they watch NPR and PBS. It's a very good point, Martha. They don't know. Tom and St. John's Indiana there's no choice for people in Chicago, no Republicans to vote for. Would it make any difference is the question. I don't know the answer to that question, but that is, obviously, a question to be asked. Darrell in Anaheim, California people vote Democrat because they are brainwashed. Democrats will give them what they want. That's a good point. In other words, better to have stores shut down if I am given more benefits. I think there's truth to that. It's really it's the antithesis of what this country has stood for. That's why we have to fight everybody. I fight every day, so should you. It's a big deal. "J. C. Penney struck a deal in bankruptcy court yesterday, saving some 60,000 jobs. One of several retailers, including J crew, Neiman Marcus Brooks brothers. To file for bankruptcy in the pandemic. But how to saving those jobs and you know, coming through bankruptcy? Help in the long term. You know the alternative was a spiral into liquidation, which not only would have erased tens of thousands of penny jobs, but would also have inundated the retail property market with all of that empty space, just when it least needed that, So you saw players with typically differing strategic interest kind of hold their nose and unite just to buy this brand. And themselves more time, right? But you know, big box stores and places And, you know, malls have been dying for years. You know, many are now having to close almost entirely. During the pandemic, But what's to say that you know, this decline of balls isn't gonna keep happening? Yeah, I mean, what's your reason for going to the mall right now? And if we're talking black Friday? Are you going to brave Cove? It worries to fight for those doorbusters. You know Amazon and others They're matching online anyway. So prior to the pandemic is, you know we were well into the obsolescence of the American Mall. We've talked about Sears old record stores Radio Shack. The value proposition of that communal experience was just diminishing, and we know that mall operators have been scrambling to make a better case. Cara sells rock climbing food halls. And that's all up in the air, thanks to everything that has happened since March. Well, there's partnerships happening. Target is announcing its partnering with ultra beauty to build all the shops within the target stores, You know, maybe alters hoping to cash in. Maybe target is what's happening there. Yeah, they offer one another. Something unique right now. Target actually has had a great year. It's It's an essential business that is mainly stayed open, with all of those Omni Channel bells and whistles. Fulfillment delivery returns online. Alta until the pandemic is one of the hottest each players in all of retail. But think about how impossible face to face contact and perfume. Spring and makeup brushes have been eso. Now they need the feet already in the door, a target and target. Frankly, it could do worse than to share its overhead with a hot retail brand. We've already seen them do that with CVS and Starbucks. Look. A new report of serious real estate report showed that 89% of major chains paid their rent in October. That's the highest level since the pandemic started. But, Robin, maybe I'm going to give too much information here. But we were in the same athletic pants for eight months and I just went through summer clothes and realized I hadn't worn any of them and we're hearing of a surge coming. People. People really aren't buying clothes, are they? It's about keeping. It's about keeping the leases together. Landlords have have to shell out so much rent relief this year. Just to keep tenants so even that number that you're seeing 89% of rents being paid. Do we know how many renegotiations were done? Do we know how many movie chains are involved in this home? Improvement has been great. It's not just about apparel. It's about averting an outright commercial real estate depression by these landlords,.

Poll shows 40% of people won't accept the results of the election if their favored candidate loses

"The first story was this Reuters poll that that shows that four out of every ten supporters both president trump and former vice president biden say that they will not. Accept results of this election if it goes against the candidate of their choice and the second was Walmart, saying that it's going to be taking guns and ammunition off of its shelves because they want to make sure that if there's any civil unrest anybody breaks into any of these stores, it's not there for the taking and and those two things together I. Think make made me at least sit back and say, wow, where where are we? At. Each side push would point at. Anecdotal evidence of the other side being capable of it. You know what I mean I I could hear from from tied I mean the right would say look at the city's left would say look at these crazy you know proud boys or whatever it is. So both sides have. Have some something that they could point to where wouldn't be totally out of the question and I guess the closer it is there are people that say the market's been week. Not on either outcome, but on the. The closeness now. is seeing the that it could be close in the Senate ended in the. President's. Election results. That's the scary thing. All bets are off in covert and and Donald Trump and everything off everything else in terms of trying to figure out elections in incumbents in markets and everything else that you know thirty three. Thirty four percent GDP, all bets are off but still down still down a third but I, think that Walmart's decision yesterday to me even beyond just the polling issue of whether people would accept. It suggests that there is a real concern about civil unrest in this country and at at a level that I don't think. I had taken into consideration I. Think I understood that? Psychologically there are people who are not going to accept the outcome which is always going to be the case and it might have been even bigger case this year but. I don't think Walmart, does these things without doing their diligence being educated in clearly suggestions clearly being made to them I imagined by. By officials, insecurity experts, and others, people just to them that they should be thinking that way and he. Is. Scared gun lack UCR word the other day talking about recession. Yeah. But he said by twenty, twenty, seven, I think. The thing is. Let's see if trump wins there's going to be there are people ready to go that have been out already they they've got enough in the past six months had a full calendar of. Events in protests and if he wins that deafening in the Joe. By surprise because, well, the Walmart news cut me more by surprise because when we were watching stores getting broken into during some of that civil unrest over the summer most of the time it was a target store they happen to be in more urban areas than Walmart's I i. i. don't recall seeing Walmart's getting broken into maybe I'm I'm forgetting that but that was kind of thing that struck me to is this is this broad they're they're everywhere and at the I guess I could see the concern I wanted to be safe. But it did make me. kind of sit back and really think. I'd also suggest that you know looting is a terrible thing and it should be condemned. His criminal most of those looting events didn't seem. I mean, there were there were dangerous protests obviously, but it wasn't I mean the idea that people were going to be. Stealing guns to go to do real things and is there was violence. Employees who are under attack. Three hundred million guns already. So I mean you're not gonNA get any more. In most of the people that have guns have ammunition more than they'll ever use. So I don't know I, mean, this is a step but. If the if it's GonNa hit the fan, there's enough. There's enough already out there. I mean, we live in unbelievable times and twenty twenty. You know what? It's not over yet. Twenty twenty so. You know I wouldn't relates anything off the table.

List of national retail chains requiring masks is growing

"We'll add target and coals to the growing list of retailers and fast food chains requiring mass for all customers, regardless of state and city rules and regulations. This as the governor of Georgia overrides a mandatory mask order. Let's find out what's going on with ABC. Is Ryan Burrow. Yeah, and you can add CVS to that list. We just got that today as well that CVS will require masks be worn inside of all of their store. So you got target. CVS Walmart Kroger Uh, Public's, which is based out of Florida, all announcing that they will now require mass. Of course, all of these stores have something in common. They all have pharmacies. They all have potentially vulnerable populations going through those doors, so it's seemingly understandable why they would want to do that. But Ryan, there are other retailers like coals that are requiring mass now. Yeah, and you also see retailers like best by stepping up and saying, We're going to the Starbucks a swell thing. We're going to require math and what the retail Industry Leaders Association has asked governors and you brought up the governor of Georgia, they want governors across the states. To make masks mandatory to make life easier for them, so they don't have to enforce this at their level. Now. You mentioned Georgia's governor saying, No, we're not doing that here. I'm not encouraging the counties of the municipalities. To make masks mandatory on DH. You know these retailers air taking it on their own and saying, OK, well, then we're going to do that on our end. So it doesn't matter if you go to a target store in Indiana or California or Washington or Hawaii. You will have to wear a mask. When you go through that door and Ryan I've seen on social media instances where there's a dustup over somebody that doesn't want to wear a mask and the employees of the store tryingto. No chorus, this person gently and nicely to do it. I mean, there's some of that resistance to Yeah, and the concern one of the things that CVS said in its statement is we don't want our employees to play the role of enforcer. You don't want a 17 year old cashier chasing someone down an aisle saying, Sir, Sir, you have to wear a mask. They will tell people when they walk in. We would like you to put on a mask. In fact, Target says. If someone doesn't have a mask, they will have disposable mass available. I mean, it's possible someone walked in completely forgets. Or maybe they're kind of stuck in a weird place, and they just don't don't have a mask accessible. They will give that give one to them. But what CBS is saying is We're going to encourage this. This is going to be ah! Ah, declaration to our customers. This is what we would like to see. And they're just hoping that people follow that. Okay. ABC is Ryan Burrow their Thank you

Melissa Butler of The Lip Bar: "The Way I Show Up Is My Super Power"

"Very excited to have you with us today. Melissa so I knew that I wanted to do a series and I knew that I wanted to talk about developing resilience in overcoming obstacles in business and you were the first person I thought of so I'm really had a long. Yeah really happy for us to be with us today so I do want to get a little background for people who might now be familiar with Melissa in Liboi. Can you just tell us a little bit about how The idea of developing cosmetics company came to you so I started the lit bar and two thousand twelve and I had been working on it for a good team. Eighteen months something like that and it really just came from my frustration with the beauty industry. It's excessive amounts of chemicals if diversity just this idea that beauty looked like one thing and I was like you know what we don't have to fit into this this box like we don't have to follow the rules that we didn't create so I'm going to create a cosmetic company that that's all about increasing diversity and challenging the beauty standard and ultimately letting customers know that they are enough and like that. Frustration is is what. Let me to making lipstick in my kitchen for the first three years. Every single product was made by their hands. And it's just an incredible journey our target stores across the country. We've expanded heavily beyond because for a long time. It was only live and now we have you know a makeup system that makes your make routine as easy as possible. So it's fun it's hard. Oh it's so har- oh goddess Sohar but also it's like super fulfilling so when you say is really hard. What are the hardest parts for you? Oh God I mean so. Many things are hard. Every day is different right and so. That's that's the biggest thing about entrepreneurship just knowing that the only thing that's constant is changed so today. I might be having an issue with my fire tomorrow. I might be having an issue with one of my staff members. The next day could be like. Oh wait we need money to do X Y and Z. Or you know maybe. We have an angry customer. Every day is different in the priorities. Shift every day And and as a CEO as a leader. I I have to focus on. What's most important like what's going to be the biggest thing that moves the needle? And that's that's where it's tough because when it's your baby you like being in the in the in the mix of it you like being like at the ground for you. WanNa make sure everything is okay sometimes as a CEO and as a leader. You can't do that because if you're always focusing on today WHO's GonNa Focus on tomorrow. I love that you share the because you know you mentioned that. All of the products started being handmade by you in your kitchen and now you are in target stores across the country right and so I would imagine that. Even though you're excited about the growth there is still some laws related to it not being such a small operation. Anymore Olive Eric. There's always you know that loss like some of the creative when when you're thinking about like CEO and leadership level like maybe you're not as In tune with all of the creative pieces or a customer sees or or even how people respond to your customers as it relates to customer service. Like you know. I'm not a Matt as much in the. We'd like the we can be fun like I really love the creative process. We have an amazing creative director. Her name's RASCO. She the person who bring every visual that you see to life essentially and I'm still heavily involved like we're going over pictures together sometimes. Sometimes I'm creating the concept you know. She's the person that brings it to life. And sometimes I missed. I missed some of that. Nitty Gritty Yeah. That's the point that you enjoy right the point that really made you good at beginning of business in the first place exactly because I mean at one point. I did everything shipped all the orders. I responded to the customer service emails. I may all of the products I you know it was. It was very much so like I was building this thing which is really cool because it allow me to learn so many areas of the business and and I'm very fast learner and I'm a risk taker so I'm able to process information very quickly and you know with some things that are happening within the team or within the company. I'm like Oh let's just do that. It's like very simple for me but because I understand how everything impacts everything and really. That's that's the biggest thing for a small business. Everyone's job is important what everyone does impacts the customer and some in some way shape or form everything Impact like our ability to convert a new or potential customer so she was like standing. How those dots connect and really being able to guide your team. Give them purpose and what they're doing Yeah and do you remember was a point at which you realize that you were going to have to? Kinda get out of the weeds and kind of transition yourself more into the leadership's Yael Role. I mean yeah I think from the from the beginning like I had no business making you know the right. I wasn't the best person to make lipstick. There were people who had that fuel fit better than me that there are people who could do a faster than me and more efficiently than the and and even at a cheaper cost me but for some reason for several years. I made the product honestly. I think that was my. That was my learning ground like I needed to do. All those things to learn it and we. We weren't a real business until I stopped making it so when I stopped making all the products in my kitchen then I was able to start focusing on on leadership type stuff and so even now today. I told my team like if I have to worry about a discount code or I have to worry about social media then we might as well stop 'cause it was like if I can't if I can't think about the big things that WHO's going to think about it. God that was a realization that that made a couple years. Then you know because the bar absolutely start as a lifestyle business it was. It was yeah it was it was a lifestyle business and and more into into a real business at retail stores with you know. I think we have over a hundred excuse now. It's crazy 'cause we started with twelve and yeah it's fun and exciting but like I said it's difficult especially when you're so emotionally connected to it. How have you dealt with disappointments in rejections in growing your business as a business owner and entrepreneurship? You get told no every single day. Things go wrong every single day like literally every single day and I think that. That's that's really what? What differentiates a business owners? Really having that understanding like that things aren't always gonNA go right and and being okay with it and just being like. Oh Yeah. That's Normal. 'cause everything isn't for everyone and that's totally fine right. And what do you think helped you to develop their resilience? I mean especially it. Sounds like you know you like you mentioned. You started as a lifestyle business or you weren't expecting to have the hundreds of skews that you have now and so I would imagine that going into a business that you're not expecting to scale in the way that it has you maybe didn't have the resilience ill. So what kinds of things have allowed you to develop the resilience kind of bounce back from the nose. I always expected are too big. I just didn't know how to get there I didn't know anything about business until I started a business and throughout this journey. I've basically been building my plane in the sky so I've always started the company thinking that we would be big thinking that we will be bigger than we are now so I actually find that more often. I'm like you know. Stop thinking that you should be like the word of the idea of Shit like just allowing things to be. I think that resilience just comes from like this back that I must be predetermined person I don't take no for an answer and I think that everything has a solution like I truly believe that. There's a solution to everything so earlier. When I mention you know me. Learning every part of the business allows me to be able to make a decision very quickly in this. Look and really. Identify the true problem where the troop caused. I think those are the things that allow me to be resilient and because it's like I have an understanding of of the knowledge now and it's like oh trying things go wrong all the time and time. Yeah yeah and it sounds like you have a pretty involved team that you trust to kind of help with that decision making is will. Yeah I mean I wish my team so harmon Allies have they hate me and I think that's what a small business is often times like. I read a lot of business bio on everyone from Steve. Jobs Jeff Pesos. And you know these. These leaders from these various admire companies that we have in this kind of like looking at their story an understanding that sometimes it's that passion and its relentlessness that allow them to become the superstar companies essentially so. I wish my team the way I push myself but as a business owner like I'm fine with pushing myself because it's again it's so emotionally attached to me and I'm trying to figure out how to create a balance there with with my team. I work them and they're they're really really awesome. And I'm always pushing for more. I'm never satisfy And I don't give myself a lot of pats on the back but that's not. That's not the behavior of a really leader. And so that's something I'm actually working on I love that. You are so insightful as you're talking about like okay yes. These are the things that I do really well but these are also some things that I'm struggling with that. I knew I wanted to grow in this area. Yeah you just gotTa be honest with yourself in life like that is what life is about like know who the hell you are and like be comfortable in. Be Comfortable with it and make the changes that you want to see or dome but at least acknowledged that you know it is what it is like Don. Don't be blind to to how you show up in the world. I'm certainly not a person that's why I'm very Reflective and I understand who I am and how I show up and and that honestly like the way I show. Up is my
