"AP's sports and Mike Reeves, it was a frantic finish at the Indianapolis 500, our Tom McKay reports. Josef Newgarden used a one lap shootout to grab the lead from 2022 champ Marcus Ericsson to win the Indy 500. You know, I wasn't looking to take anyone else out of the race, but I was going to put my car on the line to win. And I was either going to win the race or I was going to end up in the wall. Newgarden driving for team owner Roger Penske survived a chaotic final 40 miles, which saw the race stop three times for Rex. Major League Baseball the rays win a wild one over the Dodgers in Tampa Bay, correspondent Steve Carney provides the details. The Tampa Bay Rays used a 7th inning RBI ground out by wander Franco to break a ten ten tie and defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 11 to ten. This was a good team win today for sure. I mean, being able to kind of subdue them through the middle innings and keep the momentum. I thought played in our favor, but it's just such a luxury to have the offense. Other winners on the diamond were the guardians Orioles tigers royals, Blue Jays, brewers, reds, rockies, Astros, Marlins, Diamondbacks, Mariners, and braves on the PGA Tour emiliano grillo wins the Charles Schwab challenge in a playoff against Adam chic. It was his first PGA Tour victory. It over 7 and a half years. So it was great. The way it was definitely worth it, it was long, but it was worth it. Isaac Paredes homers as Tampa Bay Rays beat Los Angeles Dodgers 11-10
"Tampa Bay Rays used to 7th inning RBI ground out by wander Franco to break a ten ten tie and defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 11 to ten. Both starters got hit around as Gavin stone allowed 7 runs in two innings of work while Josh Fleming allowed ten runs in 6 innings, including 5 home runs. Reliever Jason Adams says Fleming ran into some bad luck with good hitters, but managed to battle. So I made a lot of good pitches today. If you go back and look and they just found some holes, so they were aggressive early. That's baseball. And he battled for us, which was huge. We needed that out of him. So yeah, to come away with the wind and a well fought game like that is big for everybody. Criswell gets 1st win, Rays beat Dodgers 9-3 in matchup of division leaders
"Cooper Chris well earned his first major league win as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 9 to three. Chris well working in bulk relief allowed a run on four hits and four innings of work. He credits the offense scoring early to help give him confidence. "The Yankee spotted the raise a 6 zero lead before Aaron judge belted a pair of two run homers to lead the bombers past Tampa Bay 9 to 8. We got a lot of grinders in this in this Clubhouse, man. Anthony Rizzo's second home run of the game, a two run shot in the bottom of the 8th off Jason Adam, gave New York the win. They're really good team, but we can stack up with anyone. Randy, rosarina, playing left field, wander Franco, the super sensation rookie that was brought up in mid season and he hasn't disappointed. He's their shortstop. DH Nelson Cruz, who has experience up the wazoo. This will not be in a bigger than life situation for him batting third. Batting fourth cleanup is third baseman yandy Diaz and batting 5th, second baseman likely to be batting 5th Brandon Lau with a lot of pop. He had three homers in a game I believe recently against the New York Yankees a blowout win as the Tampa Bay Rays clinched a hundred win season in the best record in the American League. That's one thing. And the other thing is their rotation. The Red Sox are going to face Shane mcclanahan in game number one. And he it seems like we say this every year, Alex barth, about Tampa Bay pictures. He had a breakout year as a young picture in the ray's rotation. He's a left hander he had a ten and 6 record this past year, 3.43 ERA. He starts game one a little more than a year after he became the first picture in MLB history to debut. Make his debut in the postseason. He posted a 3.01 ERA with 99 strikeouts over the last three months of the season. And, you know, he is a guy that is really, I think in a try and give Tampa Bay a boost right out of the gate. Yeah, I mean, I think they've got a bank on him because without glass now. And we talked about this a while ago, like, I thought Tampa was out of it without glass now, because I wasn't a huge fan of their pitching rotation now. Mcclanahan's come on and sometimes it's hard to project with rookies right and he's obviously been that guy. So he checks a box, but Ryan Yarborough struggled Michael walker's struggle. So if you can, if you're the Red Sox, and this is obviously easier said than done. If you can take a game started by mcclanahan, you really put the raisin corner. It's not impossible for the Red Sox to win it if they lose game one. But it kind of becomes tough for the race to win it, right? If they lose it because then they're pitching potentially against totally blown up. So mcclanahan is a pivotal player in this series. I don't have a splits in front of the Red Sox when it pulls up right now because I'm actually curious, but I think this first game is going to tell us a lot..

I don't know it wasn't that old. And he'll be my god. That's beautiful garh is a book. Pop got thing. I gets around four hundred horsepower. His a high sought. And i'm like you know he. He boasted about having like four hundred and thirty seven horsepower. Or whatever in his corvette but he goes. My son saw that car he'd make me trade this thing and i just think two things he was drawn in by the look and then he wanted to tell you how many horsepower of course those are the two things going on there right there. I would look it. Looks great though. Drags it really does depend on my game though. Raya should've just automatically exaggerated. But i don't wanna tell you this thing's got like four hundred and forty five horsepower. Just to watch him twist a little bit. But i didn't know. I was being very honest so good. "With Jack on a M Tampa Bay. Just put some of that glory days. Food in my mouth. Yeah, You did. What you to that new segment. It's called throwback with Jack, where we take a look back in the past, and I think it's very appropriate considering the Tampa Bay Lightning who are just so so good. Playing tonight to try to go up three to nothing in their first playoff series this year to try to think back to the origins of the Lightning, Jack Yeah, I remember. Well again is Phil Esposito that brought a mayor and got him here and got Jeff Vinik interested in it, And that's how it happened. But A lot of folks were thinking, you know, Hockey is never gonna make it in the Tampa Bay area or anywhere in Florida because we don't spend time ice skating. You don't have ice rings around and it's just not gonna be popular here. And obviously we were a little bit wrong about that. But at the time, uh, the area where Emily Arena is now they call Channel side and all that area. They were just a few old Um, where houses and most of them were abandoned warehouses, bunch of big concrete buildings down there 12 story buildings and that was it and you could barely drive through there. And obviously it's changed pretty considerably, but That ultimately led to the family right now forgotten what it was called A purse, but in a couple of things is like Thunderdome at one point Palace, the ice Palace malice that was first concert I ever went to Backstreet Boys at the Ice Palace. Really? Yeah. It was the same Pete Times Forum at one point. Yeah. Safety Times Forum, and that was how they sold him on that on getting that was The fact that she could have concerts and do a lot of other things there. Um, And of course, there was no interest in the N B A at that time here. It's amazing to think we got in NHL team before we got an MBA team. Yeah, well, we still don't have an NBA team we had. Most people aren't even aware that the Toronto The Raptor Raptor played their home games here. For what is it too much? Three months longer than that, actually, and they're done now the regular season just ended. They didn't make the playoffs. But if they would have made the playoffs, they would've had playoff games, basketball playoff games and Amalie never. So I didn't even know they were playing here. It Emily Really, I never saw in the paper anything these stories about the Raptor local team. We never announced any scores on here here because I didn't know they're here. Think about it. We had the Raptors here. We have the Blue Jays here still and so much Jason here until June for S so that's two Toronto teams that we've claimed as our own for a little bit. But for Phil Esposito have the foresight to look at this area and look at the market and say hockey will work here and like you said, I'm sure at the time people scratching their heads, saying it's Florida. "22 on am Champa Bai and we're joined now by Santiago Kurata, Who's the president and CEO of Visit Tampa Bay and a guy who's been Mighty busy here as we get ready for Super Bowl and Santiago. Thanks for joining us on a M. Tampa Bay, and this is a huge, huge event for visit Tampa Bay and for our Tourism and everything obviously would be so much better, but one for the pandemic, but Even given the exposure we're going to get because of this thing is huge. Well, good morning and thank you, as always, for having beyond you know, it's huge for all of us. Even in spite of the pandemic, you know, I think most American cities that they could they would change places with us in a heartbeat. Whatever whatever it produces, it's going to be more than what we had. And so the hospitality industry is awfully optimistic. You know the headlines that are being written the media exposure we're getting We show so well, things are going so well. I think there's a great way to balance the economy and economic impact with public safety, health and welfare, and I think we're going about it the right way. Oh, yeah, undoubtedly. And what about hotel occupancy game week Because normally that's a huge thing, but obviously because of the pandemic It's been impacted. Yeah, you know, back in 2000 and nine, which is well, also in unusual year because of the recession, hotel occupancy was a little higher than 86%. We came into this week at about 53%. But all indications are that occupancy is picking up so the good thing is we have data that we can compare how we perform. You know, this year versus last year and then versus our prior Super Bowl. Santiago. I'm picking up my friend at the airport tomorrow. So should I expect some super packed lines? How is traffic going there? You know, I think the airports such does such a great job preparing, you know, it's one of the best in the country, even when it's busy. It isn't so I would expect that things are going toe Flo very, very smoothly. I know they have a plan for you know, larger incoming crowds closer to Game day and then obviously, Monday is usually the busiest day for an airport of the whole city, so I would expect that you'll be fine. Either way. And I know they're going to take, you know lots of lots of care of people coming in and leaving so they're fantastic out there. I am sure it's gonna be fine, Awesome. Santiago, one of the things we've been hearing a lot about regarding With ties to the Super Bowl. 55 is the NFL and its involvement in fighting human trafficking. What's the deal on that? Well, you know, our county has a task force that was set up. You know, some some months ago. And they've done a fantastic job of bringing together a law enforcement survivors. All of the organizations that really are doing a yeoman's job. Preventing human trafficking. And you know what I found. I'm on that task force. And you know, we've had our agency support the marketing efforts that you're seeing all around town and the Super Bowl embraced the Hillsborough, Connie. Task force to be the task force to work with him during the Super Bowl, and you know it's the Super Bowl helps you, you know, highlight the issue, but it's something we don't want to tolerate in this community any day, not not just Super Bowls. So I can tell you the campaigns will live on. We will continue to combat that issue and again, it's It's the spirit in the attitude of this community that we're not gonna buy it. You know, we're not going to tolerate it, and so Really, really proud to have been engaged in the campaign that you're seeing all around town now that will live on and we're going to stay on it. And we have so many opportunities to highlight that problem, because, as you know, we've got WrestleMania right down the road and so many other big events conventions, But it's an everyday problem. It's not Not a problem associated Really, with anyone big event. It's an everyday problem. We have to be aware of. Well, what are some of the big events along with Super Bowl? Obviously they're impacted by the cove it But what are some of the big events that people can look forward to? Well, you know, there are so many first associated with this Super Bowl. The NFL experience that is happening out of Julian Be Lane Riverfront Park over a quarter six in part technology village, which is the site of the old, You know, Trump Tower Project. I think all of those areas are fantastic. They're free and open to the public got to make sure that there are opportunities to get in because they are mindful of crowd management and all of the things we're practicing to be safe. Those are amazing, and then obviously they're going to be opportunities. Toc the game in a safe and responsible way, and I can't tell you the buzz here. The media attention We've gotten since last Sunday after that win has been tremendous and national News International news. Everyone is really excited that the Buccaneers air in the Super Bowl and that we're hosting this year. Well, for sure. And by the way, uh, Aaron Jacobson, our partner there. And I've forgotten who all awas Sure I was a little involved in it. But we had a group together that narrowed it down to 10 names the top 10. And we had three Sports writers for the papers, one for them from the Clearwater son No. No longer around one from the evening independent, which was the same Peter afternoon paper no longer around. And Tom McEwen from the Tampa Tribune no longer around. And we had three lists of the top 10 names for them to go through and place him in the order, which they liked him best. In other words, put their favorite at number one and Your worst favorite out of those 10 at the bottom. And it turned out the term buccaneer was the only one repeated on the three. Tom McEwen had it his number one And the sports reporter from the old Clearwater son headed his number 10. So it won the contest, which did him the Buccaneers, which is funny, because it doesn't mean it was the most popular name. It just was the one that was seeing the most. Yeah, and so it became the Buccaneers and I wasn't aware of this. But at one point The University of South Florida was debating whether to name them the Buccaneers or the Golden Brahmans, and this would have been back in the sixties and they let him vote. I was hoping Against this Washington team that was seven and nine during the regular season. That played a stinker of a final game against the Philadelphia team that had just given up I was hoping the Bucks would come out, dominate early and then get some of their starters out of the game, including Tom Brady. So they're gonna have to step it up a notch and the defense not super impressive against Hi, Nikki. Can you imagine what Drew Brees could do to them if they play that way this coming week? And then after that, if they are to beat the Saints, and I'm assuming, I don't know what the line is out of Vegas, But I'm figuring Gonna be underdogs. On into New Orleans. If they are to pull off the upset win that game, then they would take on the winner of the charges Packers game And I don't know. Obviously the Packers win the Packers have the home game. In the NFC championship. I gotta be honest with you. I don't know if the Chargers were to win in the books, but the charges if I don't know if it's possible to have a Tampa home game unless it's the Super Bowl. But the task in front of them is what's going to be a really difficult game against the New Orleans Saints, possibly the best team in the NFC. I know the Packers have the best record, but the Saints when they're clicking, probably the best team. It's an exciting time for Tampa Bay. I tell you what, throughout the course of 2020 the one great story. One sports was back up and running again. The one thing that we could really Turn two and get away from it all was sports. And here in Tampa, it was fun to watch again from the lightning winning the Stanley Cup championship to the Rays going all the way to the World Series, having just Incredible regular season..

"FM 6 22 on a M Tampa Bay and we're joined right now by Brandon Stickney, Who's a former prison inmate, and he's written a book called The Five People. You'll meet in prison. And Brandon. Thanks for joining us on a m. Tampa Bay. Um good morning. Thank you. Covert is apparently having quite a While making an impression in the prisons right now, I know I saw that right now. That virus is covert is the leading killer of the state's law officers. And particularly in the prisons because the prison officers air having trouble trying to isolate That is true there there about 11,000. 256 and that is infected inmates and you add those numbers up with the officers and the guards and other prison staff. Now this is going out throughout the entire prison. This is about 17,000 people and new numbers air coming out on the seventh of this month, so it may be even higher. It's quite quite dangerous inside of a prison and this is like everyone out there. Every Floridian Must pay attention to these stories because the staff have to go home, right? They have to go home every day. They're not staying in hotel rooms. They're going home to their families. And And if they have the infection, then it's spreading around with the families. And that's how the prisons are actually kind of pod, actually, or playgrounds for covert because there is no social distance. So what's the answer? What should be done? And now that we're getting to the end of this year? How do you think the vaccine should be distributed? Well, I think with vaccine distribution, that's a very political question, because do we do we vaccinate the prisoners? I think that's a good idea. So maybe we can stop the flow off covert getting out of the prisons and into our communities. They're not top priority that there They're not. They're not well what people in the public normally say I hate prisoners. Let him rot. We spend so much money on them. They got three TV Baba Ba, and that's uh Not kind of inhumane, but at the same time we're looking at the critical nous of Giving the vaccine to the law enforcement people and they definitely need it up front line policemen they are out. It was the public every day going everywhere And but But the thing about prison is it's It's breathing in there, The numbers are getting higher and higher they're bringing in the National Guard. And because so many prison guards are sick right now. Yeah. And then the National Guard is gonna be in the same position because they're gonna be in the same position that prison guards were On, but ultimately you hope that we'll have enough. Vaccine that we can get through with the elderly and people in hospitals and things like that and ultimately down to the prison level. Yeah, it seems like the question is which one is it Seems like, you know, Cove. It is obviously spreading faster than the vaccine. So the federal level we really, really need to catch up with some of these other countries out there that are reporting better numbers. But the thing I'm kind of worried about is not all Prison wardens, at least in my experience are completely 100% truthful. So are the numbers in these prisons actually higher. Do we really have a good grasp on how many people have it because you could be tested for it, and your test results can come in within an hour, or it could be five or six days. So the report. Even if they're telling the truth, the report coming from some law enforcement of the prison is is probably not accurate, because if if it could take five days to get the results back What they're saying today is gonna be the same by base. For now, By the way, Brandon spent 19 months in prison on a minor drug conviction. Where was that in in New York. That was in New York state, and then I need they. Once I got out of prison. I need a safe place to stay. I came down to Florida and stayed with my parents. And I was with them for for for two years, and it was a safe house and I worked on the book. During that time. It was actually it was very nice to get into kind of a new surroundings. Positive people. Alcoholics Anonymous. And just let some great people there, including the people from Florida cares. There are prison reform, and they're working very, very hard to make life in the prisons in Florida. Ah, little bit easier on the inmates. That's it is. It is tough down there. And now it's even tougher with with covert because there's no social distancing. There's no one to go. You're always about 2 ft, away from maybe less than the other prisoner. Especially when they're moving them in a bus because the bus is very tight and you're shackled and they got a hand out your meals. You could be on the bus for three anywhere from three hours to 12 hours. So if you don't think that this is another way that covert is getting out of the prison is when they're moving prisoners anywhere for any reason. It's just what you get one guy on the bus, and he's very guaranteed so close to everyone else that he's gonna spread that. Well, we appreciate your joining us, Brandon Stickney.
