Trump explained this was the case despite all 5 of the officers involved being black, he went on to explain that the fundamental issue was the institutionalized police culture of using excessive force against people of color. Trump argued that without federal police reform, nothing was going to change. Federal police reform, I think we're going to continue to see these hashtags proliferate so much that we can't keep up with them. Crump was interviewed on ABC's this week. In an interview, Warren said Biden should run again because he's already done a tremendous amount despite Democrats having the skinniest possible majority in the Senate and only a recent majority in the House. The Democrat notably avoided giving her official support to vice president Harris as his potential running mate, saying she's deferring to Biden's team for that decision. The president has it formally announced his running for reelection in 2024 that has repeatedly indicated that he intends to. The White House says there's been about a 97% drop in illegal immigration this month. Texas governor Greg Abbott says that's misleading. He says the decline is seen only when you look at people coming from four countries. Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. Abbott also points out that numbers typically go down in January before rising in February and March. Buffalo Bill safety to mar Hamlin is speaking on camera for the first time since he suffered a cardiac arrest on the field earlier this month. Jim Forbes has that story. Hamlin posted the video on Saturday and said he feels like the health scare ended up being a blessing to inspire others. Well, I'm so thankful to everybody. I know that it isn't enough just to be thankful. This is just the beginning of the impact that I wanted to have on the world and with God's guidance, I will continue to do wonderful and great things. He also said the incident became a great example of humanity with every team across the NFL coming together to support his recovery. I'm Jim Forbes. Gas prices are down, but not by very much. Triple-A puts today's nationwide average at three 50 a gallon, that's a penny less than yesterday. The Federal Reserve is gearing up for its meeting this Tuesday and Wednesday, and there is a lot of discussion about the interest rate environment and what it means for the economy. Lori calvasina is RBC capital markets head of U.S. equity strategy. I also think investors are seriously entertaining the idea that we may not have a recession after all. So I hear a lot of people in my meetings talk about the soft landing looks like it's probably going to happen. And then also I think people are starting to sniff out the end of that hikes, and people are ready to turn a new chapter in this market. And so I think on balance, I'm a big sigh of relief. Calvasina was interviewed on Bloomberg Wall Street week with David Westin. Tesla's best week since 2013 is spurring bets that the worst is over for the electric vehicle maker after a disastrous 2022. More from Bloomberg's Charlie pellet. It took better than expected quarterly results, words of assurance from Elon Musk and a $5 billion credit commitment to help shake off last year's gloom. Now a big hurdle for the stock will come this week when the Federal Reserve is expected to raise rates and will give a sense of the path forward for future hikes, a hawkish tone could derail Tesla's strong start to the year. Charlie palette Bloomberg radio. Tesla's Doc is up over 44% year to date. Last year, Tesla stock lost 65%. Meghan ornament is chief investment officer at verdant capital advisers, and she's as companies will be using the slower economic environment to adjust earnings outlooks going forward. We have a lot more to go within earnings season. But I think you're going to hear a lot more of this from just the overall economic slowdown that they're seeing. And they're going to come through and put that push that guidance lower for the rest of the year. It needs to happen. Earnings have been very slow to come down for 2023. So I think you're going to see a lot of companies do that with that fourth quarter earnings season. Investors will see reports from companies in nearly every industry this week, and from big tech names, such as Amazon, Apple, meta platforms, and alphabet. "Loved Christmas. I'm part Christmas elf. I like to joke about. Groom Aaron shoot mus said it made for a scenic day, and they only had a couple of cancellations. U.S. financial markets are closed today for the holiday. I'm Tammy trejo. And I'm Erica hershkowitz from the Bloomberg newsroom. The story of 2022 was how fast inflation rose. The story of 2023 will be how fast it falls. Bloomberg economics view is that even as they edge down, inflation indices will remain way out of the comfort zone for major central banks, necessitating further tightening, even as recession risks loom. Bloomberg economic forecast show global inflation peaked at 9.8% year on year in the third quarter, and is now on path down to 9.5% in the fourth quarter and 5.3% at the end of 2023. That's a move in the right direction, but it doesn't mean the crisis is over. In the U.S., rapid wage gains means that core CBI will remain way above the fed's comfort zone. In Europe, sky high energy costs mean a cost of living crisis that's tipping major economies into recession. Two exceptions to the global story are China where inflation until now has been muted, but rapid COVID reopening as a risk going forward and turkey, where politically motivated monetary policy has contributed to inflation at 85%. Today, the Euro pound in Japanese yen were all little changed against the green back with major markets still closed for the holidays earlier the yen strengthened on haven demands amid concern rising COVID infections will undermine China's economic recovery. China's economy continued to slow this month as a massive COVID-19 outbreak spread across the country. Bloomberg's Larry koski reports. A Bloomberg aggregate index of 8 early indicator shows a decline in December from an already weak pace in November, although there's no reliable data on the extent of the spread of the virus or the number of sick and dead, it had reached every province before extensive and regular testing ended. The canceling of almost all domestic restrictions in China now means the virus can circulate freely. I'm Larry kofsky. Bloomberg radio. Meanwhile, Tesla shut down its most productive plant in Shanghai on Saturday, one day ahead of its original plan to suspend operations for one week. There was no reason provided for the ahead of schedule pause, the move comes as Tesla added suppliers face operational challenges stemming from a spike of COVID cases in China. Toyota said today, it's global output hit a record for November, thanks in part to solid consumer demand, though it warned of an uncertain outlook due to a persistent shortage of semiconductors and spikes in COVID cases across China. The world's number one automaker produced over 833,000 vehicles last month, an increase of 1.5% from a year ago, global sales rose 2.9%. The output for vehicles reflects solid demand in areas like North America and a rebound from a year earlier when COVID infections in Southeast Asia disrupted supply chains. Checking the global markets, China's CSI 300 gained four tenths of a percent. The knee came in Japan rose two thirds of a percent. Susanna ten railroad workers unions have already struck new labor deals, but there are two holdouts. And if the unions and railroads fail to come to a deal, it could snarl supply chains disrupt deliveries and cause the U.S. economy more than $2 billion a day, according to rail officials, and susana the railroads are warning of possible service disruption starting tomorrow. Bloomberg's Denise Pellegrini, Federal Reserve policymakers will be paying close attention this week to the release of the consumer price index for August. This is analysts speculate about the size of another interest rate hike when fed policymakers next meet September 21st. Brian Weinstein has had a global fixed income at Morgan Stanley investment management. But they had a crystal ball. They would have raised rates. I think long before they did. So an absence of that and I think in light of where they started at zero or negative, no choice, right? So yes, growth is slowing in a perfect world. They would have been hired to begin with, but now they have no choice to be credible. They have to fight the current inflation and worry about growth later. And they can't, if we nod to the market that we're going to use again right away, although it does seem more and more likely as growth false. The CPI comes out on Tuesday. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy behind the scenes right now are building for the future of the PGA Tour. I think the NBA has been a terrific job of figuring out how to use technology to meet the viewing demands their viewers. This suit that happens are really these days they know their work and know their value. And they deserve to get paid. Bloomberg, business of sports. From Bloomberg radio. This is the Bloomberg business of sports show where we explore the big money issues in the world of sports. I'm scarlet fu. Michael Barr is off for the week. Coming up on the show today, we've got a fantastic guest. He is a former MLB pitcher, actually he was a top ten draft pick. And he's now a founding partner at jail strategic wealth. His name is Jacob Turner, and he will provide us insights on his firm's financial mission and basically how his experiences as a pro baseball player really shaped his understanding of creating and sustaining wealth and advising athletes and entrepreneurs on how to do the same. That is straight ahead on the Bloomberg business of sports show, but first, we begin with a Bloomberg exclusive, focused on one of the greatest tennis stars of our generation. Really, of all time. And how she has transcended how bran see women athletes, as well as their role in sports marketing. We can only be talking about one person. Serena Williams, so joining us now to discuss this is Bloomberg news reporter Ella Cerrone Ella co wrote an article titled Serena Williams forever changed how brands see female athletes and you can find that on the Bloomberg terminal or at Bloomberg dot com. Ella, welcome to the show. Thank you so much for having me. So Serena Williams an incredible career 27 year career in tennis, she is the most well-known female tennis player, but I would argue she is the most well-known female athlete. And in your reporting and talking to different brands and people in the business world, it's clear they see her that way too. Absolutely. I mean, Serena's her nickname so far has been the goat, the greatest of all time. And a lot of people also argue that that's not just for female athletes. That's athletes entirely. Just given the way she's changed the game and the businesses surrounding it on multiple intersections. As a woman, as a black woman, as a mother, and as a business person and the ways in which she partners with brands and works with them and also inspires other athletes to demand what they're worth. Yeah, you write about how she's made a permanent impact on marketing budgets everywhere, particularly when it comes to how much money these brands put aside to work with female athletes. And you kind of go through her history with some of the brands. And we know that she has a big deal a long-standing partnership with Nike. But what I thought was interesting Ella was that she didn't start off with Nike. She started off with puma. It was kind of like Nike wanted to see her proof her worth first before she got signed on with them. When puma and Serena partnered in the late 90s, that was still a headline making partnership. That was no small feat on its own, and it was a 5 year partnership for about $13 million. And then Nike came along in 2003 and really invested with her and that investment has grown since then to include a number of other initiatives, like a design initiative that they have in house for designers for marginalized backgrounds. Nike has named their biggest building on the Beaverton campus after her in homage. And so, you know, the impact that she's had with Nike has been really indelible. She's been making partnerships that are really strategic and smart for her as she deserves. So Ella, you spoke with the vice president of global women's sports marketing at Nike about Serena Williams. Give us a sense of how groundbreaking Serena was for Nike and how they're modeling a lot of what they now do for female athletes and athletes as a whole because of Serena. Nike doesn't have a spotless track record. They came under fire a few years ago with regard to pay discrepancies for pregnant athletes and people are still really watching them and making sure that they walk the walk and really support athletes and Nike told us that they are really listening with and working with athletes and
