They've been set up with the latest technology college. Here we go to show the ups and downs of a typical shift on the streets. I think people are liking to watch it through the officers. They get to see it the way. The officers are racing Dan Abrahams the host juggles. The thirty two different feeds that poor in during three intense hours each Friday and Saturday night. We are live Tallahassee Police Department. He's joined by analyst. Tom Morrison Sergeant. Sean Larkin from the Tulsa Police Department for me as a current police officer. I like the public be able able to see the whole story of something. The three try to make sense of whatever is coming their way. We're here in the studio and we don't know what's going to happen next anymore than the people at home do. We're this. This is a prized in shock. Sometimes but what goes down now in its fourth season Anne which is owned by. ABC News Parent Company Disney live. PD is one of the highest hist rated programs in cable television but the success of this series comes as the country having a painful debate over the policing policies on American streets in in two thousand fourteen. A police officer shot Michael Brown and Ferguson Missouri. Which essentially began the black lives matter movement less than a year later? Walter Scott was shot in the back and killed by an officer in Charleston South Carolina in two thousand sixteen Landau Casteel was killed by an officer in Minnesota. His death was broadcast live on facebook to offer so just shot him in his arm and earlier. This year Tatyana K.. Jefferson was playing video games in her bedroom with her eight year. Old Nephew when police officer Sir shot and killed her through a window. These are just floor out of thousands of police shootings in the five years since Michael Brown was killed. Police officers and police departments Are under the microscope right now. People around the country are demanding more transparency. The police departments on the show believed that broadcasting. Their work helps helps both the police and the public. I just knew that people needed to see what we see every day. Not just a snapshot but actually see the funny stuff the dangerous stuff that we we encounter every single day. Most people don't see that they have a laugh. PD now the Richland County Sheriff's department. South Carolina has been on live. PD since the first episode. Sheriff Leon Lott decided to take a chance on this new transparency. I'm sure that there were some worries that you had because it's live early. No then have any worries whatsoever I trust my people that good professional deputies that are on the show I knew art. People will do the right thing but at the same time to your people are human. Well I think what I I WANNA people do with human. We are just like anybody else had no worries. It's not scared. One bit when the program became a hit some of his officers became celebrities as it. Okay to call you a star of the show. Sure sure do like that word. I don't feels like a star but it's it's It's been very positive for Danny Brown from the Richland County. Sheriff's department is one of the most recognized faces on the show. People like to run from you. Yeah I don't know why I'm a really nice guy so it is almost every time. He stepped out of his car. Someone in Richland county new his name you would but some police officers don't always have good face to face encounters. Most people their contact with law enforcement is not a good time. Whether you're involved in a traffic accident you've come home from work in. Your House is burglarized. you got pulled over for speeding and what I always say. Is You know we don't get called to somebody's ladies house because their kid came home a stray keeping your hand. You're going to get pepper. Spraying critics of the show. Sate violates privacy and exploits a person's lowest moments. What are you doing here? Oh you dance Abrahams who is also chief legal analyst for ABC News says what you see on. The show is fair and legal title to broadcast when someone is approached by the police or arrested on a public street. There is an argument that there's something inherently newsworthy about that newspapers have for years always laid out about all the people who were arrested that day. This is not that dissimilar over three hour show there are countless arrests. Of course getting arrested doesn't necessarily mean you're guilty cheaper the perception can be. They're being detained. Even when people are not charged or acquitted at trial anytime someone ends up being cleared. And while we're on we make sure to tell the audience that people are innocent until proven guilty as we don't ever say this guy's hammer and he's going down to prison for whatever it may be to some. I'm it seems like people of Color and in particular black Americans make up a big percentage of chases and arrests. What you see is dependent one on where you are like? If you're in MISSOULA MONTANA YOU'RE NOT GONNA see a lot of interactions with African Americans if you're in Richland County South Carolina and you're dealing with maybe the more high crime areas. Those tend to be the more African American communities. The show has been sued for defamation and invasion of privacy and South Carolina Frederick West was arrested rested for drug trafficking in two thousand seventeen on live. PD by the Greenville. County sheriff's department but the charges were later dropped he claimed he was racially. Profiled sued in another lawsuit from the same county. A black man whose car was crashed into by police cruiser said that he quote was largely targeted in this manner because house of his race one of the lawsuits was dismissed. The other is pending in a statement. ABC News the producers say that the two lawsuits regarding the production of live PD in Greenville. Greenville County completely lack merit and had no bearing on filming or continued outreach. From other departments hoping to participate on the series. Even the show's critics disagree that there are flashes of compassion. You understand how I feel I do. I definitely do deputy. Did he added Peres. Shared this emotional moment with a homeless veteran. Who was smoking marijuana in his car? I'll tell you I was homeless living in my car and I didn't and I'm in the military as as well so I feel for you. He tells deputy Peres he has a medical marijuana card from California but pizza's knee is sets. Let's how can I just don't want you to. I know he's released without charges. Young Girls Tomorrow Okay. One of the moments that wins over hearts and minds the show has show the human side of the law enforcement that we want to help. You want to join that. Not Everybody is a bad person That we are here to do our job. At least six law enforcement enforcement agencies have quit the show some were concerned about showcasing crimes in their cities. Others complained that the show wouldn't allow them to use live. PD videos at the trials of of the suspects arrested on the program. I think that the vast majority departments we have followed have been very satisfied with what we do and how we do it but look. We're not looking to in every single case say to the police department. We WanNa make sure that you're okay with everything. This is part of following being them in Richland County. Sheriff Lott says live. PD has dramatically improved relations between his police force and the community. He now has a waiting list of officers coping to join his department. Where we don't have a recruiting staff? We don't go out and we don't affect recruiting but our deputies do it every single day and this show is now helped Help show them show professionalism that they have and so people want to come work here in April live. PD celebrated its two hundredth episode. And this was the watch party in Richland County. The more than five thousand people showed up. They had to move the event to the county fairgrounds so the show keeps racing along. Aw Johnny what you gotTa do right now. On his watch crime went down by fifteen percent. Overall, violent crime went down by eleven percent. So he did a fantastic job as mayor of Tallahassee. That's part of why he was considered an exciting candidate. A lot of people backed because he was this young guy who done an amazing job at Tallahassee and talahassee. It was a failed state because it was a progressive guy who was running it. Commissioners in the area praised the three point, eight percent economic update driven by ninety five propose under construction developments in the pipeline with his city limits in Leon county, economic development, fficials forecast six thousand three hundred jobs created more than two hundred fifty. Three million in wages spurred by those projects according to. Papers in Tallahassee and and Telehealth did better economically in the time that he was mayor than the rest of Florida. Right. So as usual, Donald Trump, the exact opposite of what was true. So not only the economy do better under Gillam just to mention specific numbers in regard to crime, decreasing in Tallahassee in Leon county. According to the annual crime report by law enforcement, local law enforcement Tallahassee an Leon county saw significant drops in crime in two thousand seventeen. Overall the crime rate dropped fifteen point. One percent, the Leon county sheriff's office saw reported eighteen point seven percent reduction. And the Tallahassee police department saw a fourteen point, three percent reduction, but Trump will never ever look into the facts or the details. He doesn't care because anything that he tweets, we'll be taken as fact by his supporters and his base, he's gotten away with it. Over and over again. And then one final thing. It's laughable that a man who's facing multiple investigations for multiple criminal activities has any right thinks he has any right to talk about crime or criminal activity like he's facing, not just the Russia investigation. He's facing an investigation for using his own charity to enrich himself. He's facing an investigation into illegal campaign contributions or taking them by paying off playboy models and porn stars like come on, you really gonna have a conversation with us about crime. You're a criminal, so you don't get to be the arbiter of who increases crime and who doesn't. You've increased crime. If anything, one, Leslie to please check out the interview I did with them. You get it on our app to dot com slash because I asked them, how did you bring crime down for the progressives that they were mayors and they brought crime down my ass. They almost always have the same Assar. They actually care about the community. So they did community policing and that's not going cracking skulls in the community. Know it's asking him, hey, what do you need? What's the crime around here? How can we help decrease the crime? And instead of using the citizens as guilty, you them as the people you're supposed to protect and you know what they do, then they cooperate with police and they work hand in hand and they bring crime down. He could do that across Florida. So again, in that case, it doesn't matter if you're a progressive or conservative. Do you want crime to go down the guy's a proven record of bring crime down with a smart strategy. Right? Donald Trump's going around, you know, say, do we really need to be I? I mean, flipping should be illegal cooperating with law enforcement. Donald Trump says, should ought to be illegal. It is a fact that some Lynn in urban Meyer's family who she confided in. In new that she was in physical danger and even set in the tax Phillies Shelley Mayer said he scares me that's just by looking at pictures and hearing stories. Imagine how Courtney fell. So there's so many aspects of this that just make you go, what are we doing? How does this continue to have it in? Thanks to that gentleman for for have. Unfortunately, those stories are just a diamond dozen and you hear them all the time and it becomes even more, you know, under the microscope when you have not only store like this, but a story when it comes out that someone was looking for help and got zero zero helping it. Yeah. And I think that's why the microscope has been focused so much more on issues like this is because there are so many more people now to whom this is personal because they've experienced it or witnessed it in their own families. And so people are not willing to let it just go away as they might have Jenner. This is the Paul finebaum show in the Paul finebaum show. We're going to get right back to your calls starting with Peyton in Long Beach, California. Hey, guys, how you doing today, you'll great. I got two questions for you. Warn how much of this blame do we place on? What seems like every powerhouses police department ends up botching these or throws these documents underneath the table while I mean, I mean, I keep referencing tally Tallahassee police department and the whole Jameis Winston stuff and all that all that, you know, terrible. If that happened, Johnny would like an answer on that on how much blame we place on on officers on campus. And my second question is, how come the NFL these kind of topics differently? I can't. I mean, there's too many examples even name right now that I wanted, no, but it just referencing the guy that was in the elevator that beat up his girlfriend or something? Yeah, NFL suspend him for like three games. I mean, wh. Why? Why is it they should be. They should not allowed to be put on pads ever. Again, that was Ray rice. I believe it was more than a three game suspension, but. The NFL NFL seems like a very White Hart stamps and stuff like this when they need to be bearing down and buckling down, and it's just. I just wanted to guys opinion on them in how much kind of Bill would use the police academies have. Now, think about it. I think maybe it was initially a short suspended and the public outcry was really great, and then they ended up adding onto it for for Ray rice. But you know your question about the police that something that was asked yesterday several times. Why was he never arrested? Why did you know with the with the multiple incidents? Why was why was it no one's hand was ever forced by him being put in jail because because you would think if that happened, there's no way that urban or anyone else that Ohio State could say that they didn't know about it. And yet that's not what happened now, whether that had anything to do with him being an Ohio State football coaches is something that we're just speculating on because it wasn't campus police. It was the town that they live in outside of Columbus. So that's that's where these incidents were during and they had the jurisdiction so it it's not as cut and dry as it may seem police on the scene, Brad. You still got a press charge. Oh, you're right. You're right there that the question still exist. Why? Why was he never arrested for for any of these things that happen? Especially when you see the pictures and we know for at least one of them, she was encouraged not to buy back in all nine, which it like you said, you get it because he he's up and coming coach. She's not working. She's pregnant, you know, you can in some aspect understand it from the outside, but still not the right thing to do..

"Orlando sentinel florida state quarterback andre francois spent the last two months under surveillance by the tallahassee police department because someone convinced them he was selling weed oh boy because what everybody's gonna go back to the team it's winston thing and everybody's going to go back to all its jameis winston two point oh listen to this so after the tipster went to the tallahassee police department with their theory back in february there was a two month investigation by the tpp that they went through francois's garbage and they went through some stuff to see if he was selling we well apparently after they felt like they got enough of enough evidence to get a subpoena and go break in and searches apartment they found seventeen grams just over half an ounce and for those that don't know in states where lee weed is legal it's it's pretty normal for somebody to carry a full ounce per person that's the you know so it was less than that so they've got a little back back explaining to do i think the tipster set him up apparently the tallahassee police department was by some tipster somebody guaranteed it was a gator fan i was probably hurricane fan trying to get the andrea francois kicked off the team belt head coach willie taggart says he's still on the team but you know what it's not surprising that he's using smoking we because he's got that tendon tear could remember that he suffered the play in the alabama game took him down so hopefully he's recovering back in and i don't want to give to dictate or anything because you wanna stay off the weed i am with stephen smith on this stay off the we'd do not get addicted but apparently for people that are a massive pain it's an acceptable l a lot of people that get on that you know say it helps so i i'm not going to get into the we debate in my side of it you know what if it's very very small control amounts and it helps it you're okay but the sentinel article says after the cops figured out they had wasted their time they went.
