"Talkradio seven sixty. Welcome back to the show shows told your money wealth Joanna semi here alongside the young. It's perfect timing. Couldn't be better time. Drew this month ago market this week? The called and said, you know, what let's just have some volatility. So we got something to talk about pets. So we've got some of the knows what he's talking about. We got on the line. He's principal and director of research at Buckingham strategic. Well, Larry, great to have you been my pleasure. Just came back from a nice two week tour New England, nice and relaxed, and what am I come back there? Yeah. Right. Volatility is back. It certainly looks that way. And I think the most important thing for people to have is this perspective bay, probably thank. And I know this is true because director of research for an effect one hundred and forty firms I get calls immediately. When we get base like this. Also, it's because the vises will work with are getting calls from their clients. They tend to think this is highly unusual or move up three percent. Plus in a day. What the evidence is that that is not the case. And a great example is this I would say most people think that stock returns are kind of normally distributed that means you get big events. Like these in the tail very infrequently a cycle. Hurricane will like Michael happens. Once every hundred years, we don't get one every month or something like that. Or every year, even it turns out that. If stock returns were normally distributed we would have about fifty eight or sell with those days in a hundred year period. And yet we've had over thousands of that or more than seventeen times as frequently. And if you raise that hurdle to four and a half percent, you would expect just six times in one hundred years or so and yet we've had three hundred sixty six of them in that period or sixty times is great. And to me, the most empowering stat is if you were looking at a move of more than seventy percent, you would expect it once every three hundred thousand years on we've had it occur about fifty times. So these really important numbers to keep in mind because it tells us that stocks are really risky. Big moves like this happen frequently and your plan better inclu, a certainty that you're going to have. The live with them often because otherwise you panic and selfish you took too much risk nothing really happened. See blank what the pundits are saying. Maybe it's the fear of more interest rate hikes, and there could be China. But didn't we already know all of this in Seoul? Why? Now, just drop a thousand points, you five some are percent of today's all the answer is pretty simple. First of all, you're right. There was absolutely no news whatsoever. Unli- sometimes markets dropped sharply because of bad news nine one. One would be a perfect example, Lehman Brothers collapse. Oil embargo with nineteen seventy four those are big events, obviously negative impacts and can explain shot lose. And the other hand there's no way we would have had as I mentioned over a thousand times of vans that have occurred as ten times a year on average in year period where you get reasons for Mark. The move over three percent in this case. There was absolutely now knows everything at the are pointed out trade war risks with China rising interest rates all fed had been saying they were going to raise rates four times this year likely three next year. Everyone knew that for months the yorker quieter radian -ticipant at that problem is that we use human beings have this hunger and desire and need to try and find explanations or find patterns when events can be truly random in nature. We see this. When investor look set some money manager and sees three years, great returns and think that means something when it's highly likely that's purely a random act on the same thing happens here is there on foreign exchange. Trading room for city coop. One of the largest varnishing strangers in the world. And we used to get calls, of course, in the media when we. Had big moves in the foreign exchange market, and we would laugh about it. Because some days we come in in the morning and write up a brief. Here's by bullet points for why the dollar went up, and he has five were down whichever way. It went. We would read. It was no explanation off intertwined things by people have this need. And literally as you said there was no news markets happen. Who knows why it's easy to try to explain things after the fact but often there are no good explanation. Larry, you did an analysis recently about five percent drops over the last eight years, and it's interesting. I think our emotions would tell us. Okay. The recovery's coming time to get out of the market. But yet in your research at least a recent research. That's not been the case. The next six and twelve months of extra been pretty good. Yeah. I look back just to provide a reminded to investors your attempted to panic and sell here to say, well, let's just look back since the great financial recession. Ended in March of two thousand nine the bear market. And there I looked to see how many months we had. We're losses were at least five percent in the SNP. That's roughly what the loss wise over the two days Wednesday and Thursday of this week. So we had six episodes. The average lost a whole over six percent. The worst loss was in may of two thousand ten and was eight percent on average the next six months. Returned sixteen percent. That's not parental. That's outright. That's fifty percent walk or sixty percent more than the average compound annual return and the return over the next twelve months was twenty five percent, obviously torn and a half times the ninety year average, and what's interesting is two of these episodes are back to back. So may twenty ten worth a loss of eight percent was followed by June. A loss of five and yet if you started from June one the return over the next six months plus nine and a half percent. We saw the same thing in August of twenty eleven that was down five point four in September of twenty eleven was down seven still if you saw six months from August knowing that September was down another seven the next six months, we still up thirteen and the next year was up eighteen when you look at evidence like that. It's no wonder Warren Buffett advises people that have never tried to find the market, but if you can avoid timing it at least be fearful when others are greedy and be greedy. When others are fearful Larry with this little shakeup, people do give your full. But I think good things happen here. I think there's been a lot of complacency with people's investment strategy over the last several years where the might not really. Realized how much risk that they were taking maybe they were chasing returns. And then all of a sudden you can kind of see the sharp dip because memories are short. It wasn't that long ago where the market imploded. But then we get over confident. And then all these has come out. And then when you see that short dip, maybe it might motivate people to really take a second look at their overall portfolio to make sure it's really doing what should be doing for their specific goals. Yeah. You raise a very good point. Now now, meaning any point in time is always a good time to do your investment strategy taking a look to make sure that you haven't become overconfident. Make sure you don't have more risk in your portfolio. Then you have the ability to take because job security or your investment. Horizon is now gotten shorter you getting closer to retirement, maybe your stomach acid is rumbling. You thought you could deal with drops. Like, we had lists today's banal you can't sleep. Even if you didn't panic and sell life's too short not to enjoy it. And lastly, the last ten years have been so good that many people have earned returns. Well, above they're expected returns. So now, they have much less need to take risks because they're much closer to their goals, and they expected, and so are we do on a regular basis is Ron Monte Carlo simulations, and we like to see Elise say a ninety percent success. And maybe someone ten years ago beat it to be seventy percent equities to get that. And today, they only need fifty. Well, we want them to take those chips off the table. So they can enjoy their life and not worry about bear markets. This is certainly a good time to do it. I'll add one other important thing whenever you get drops like this. It's really important to take advantage of that not only by rebalancing the portfolio, but also looking for opportunities to tax laws harvest, because example. What happened just in two thousand and nine. We had NASA losses in eight and early on. I we were harvesting Watson's having Sam share the pain, especially short-term losses, which are more valuable. But if you waited until the end of the year, which is what I know many individuals do on a calendar basis and advisors. Do it. Once a year, we don't we check Dowling literally their opportunities, and you wanna office those losses because by the end of the year, they may be gone and your miss that opportunity to save in some cases, thousands or even tens of thousands of ballots in taxes so great opportunity to re-examine your investment policy statement and also rebounds. And where opportunities exist office losses, especially short-term.
