"Cafe hey, this is Talia Slanger. And you're listening to me try not to freak out over Macy gray. She looms so large in my life, and for a lot of people that name evokes her one big song. I try when that came out in nineteen ninety nine and won her a Grammy. It was suddenly the biggest song in the world. She was an instant mega star. And I some people out there. Macy gray is frozen in that song in that time, and those people in my humble opinion are sorely missing out while a million American idol contestants have been trying to launch their own careers by covering. I try Macy has been out there. Busy growing. Reinventing herself and putting out new music consistently for the past twenty years. That includes one of my favorite all time albums. Macy's two thousand and one record called the hid and her latest album called ruby which you will hear it Macy perform songs from today. Banned fire backup singers are bananas and all of it her debut her whole career almost never happened. Macy was a single mom of three which you got her big break. You'll hear her whole story. I up though, Mesa great and her band performed the song that opens her latest album, ruby. This one is called Buddha. Swatch fear. Show. This is. Psalm. What? You. Soon. Big. What I'm trying to say. Free. Control. What's stall? So. Live here at world cafe with the opening track to her latest album, ruby that's Macy gray at her mazing band with Buddha. That's opens the record Macy. Welcome back to world. Cafe. Thank you. I'm happy to have you here. Thank you. Yeah. So the sentiment that you express on that song the futures in the air the past is in the ground. All right now, I love that. Do you have to be? Yeah. It's it's so elevated in the way that you sing it. I really believe it. So your Oko. Do you have to be in a place like that to write a song like that? Do you have to be feeling present like the Buddha to write something like that? At that time was because I think you just have to be grateful. You know, it's just natural to to look back. You know, get frustrated with yourself on beat yourself up with things, you know. I wish I had done it like that. But. I think I think it's good. When you celebrate the now, you know when you when you when you congratulate yourself getting through that instead of knock yourself all day. Yeah. Yeah. Do you meditate? No. I'm not a Buddhist philosophy is living in the now. So that's why it's called Buddha. Yeah. Man. I love it. And what I love about it and your music in general, I've been a fan for a long time. And what I really appreciate is that there's this current of positivity that I feel like runs through what you do. But not in an obvious way. Thank you. You're welcome. Thank you. Actually, it's gotten me through a lot at alleged for time. The core. Progressions on that song the way that the basis arrange the way that the backing vocals, come in all of it. It's so it's lush. Yeah. Word. So tell me a little bit about studio time for you. And how you figure out like how how to make a song sound like that? Actually can't take a whole lot of credit for that. The producer was is Johan Karlsson. He's done a lot of big pop records. He's he's in max Martin's camp. The sweetest duties he was weighed. You know, it's not just me and the piano, you know, what I mean?.
