Not 100% clear how reliable the numbers are right now, given the fact that some testing centers and government offices were closed for the Thanksgiving holiday, While it may take a few days for all of that to settle out, we do know this more people are in California hospital beds. Being treated for covert 19 than at any time during the pandemic. That's also true nationwide. The Bay Area covert hospitalization total very close to the peak number recorded. In late July. NBA star Steph Curry on playing golf through the years

"Right stephane. Thanks so much for joining us. I want to start right away with background before. We came on start recording. You already give me bunch excuses about how you haven't been playing a lot so have feeling to know how this is going to go. But i i gotta know some back on. I think it is important. How you got into golf. How much you play grown-up all this started happening before we get into some of the events we've We've seen you play in no the The i've got all the disclaimers and qualifiers from our game got. Those one liners locked up. But i started plan back in By eight or nine my dad. He played six years in the nba. So it's kind of summertime. Hobby is normal kind of father son type of situation. You take me out drive a golf cart. He cut down a little putter. That i'd go hit with In that i started getting more and more Passionate about china learn how to play and by ten eleven playing full rounds them all play low high school golf for three years and then from there may have been bit by the bug ever since it is one of the things look forward during the most when. I'm outside of the court last similarities. To you know the the encore like ball competition what you experience in the in the league in how. I kind of transition that to china. Take everybody's money on the course so good. I was gonna say this from for later. But i want to understand what the gulf culture is like during the nba. Season right because you know guys season kind of your typically goes into june for you guys but you know releases into summer and you can play golf in the summer. How often are you playing during the season. Are you traveling with clubs. Do you need a certain time period on a road trip to be able to play on the road. Have the set course every city you go to. How's that work. All the above. I think the best way to explain it is I guess our team. We are in a little bit more freedom over the last five six seven years to be able to kind of even manipulate the schedule on road trips a little bit to bagan some golfing though so we'll probably play like twice a month during the season. Which is solid Mostly on the road coach. Kerr's amazing it. A go into a city will play. That night might have an early next morning but if we have an off day he'll give us a window to go play in the morning and then cash the plane to go to the next city and then we have the warrior golf team championship. Run a myself. Andrei igwe dollar klay thompson will play. We'd have some front office. Guys that will go out so we had to accrue whenever that wind opened up the group techs going. Hey time we plan where we're going so there's a. There's a golf culture for sure in. Our team is growing across the league. I think every year. I find like five ten guys that are either asking me about what club they should get or where they should get lessons. Or are asia coast cool which i'll bring in clubs on the plane type stuff so we get all those questions is by the by the year is pretty awesome to know. How much did you know that other people are enjoying the game. As much as i do because i think that was one thing especially for golf. Fans that stuck out about the last dance is how often jordan was like as soon as something was over a guy no no. We're going to go play golf. We're going to go play golf and be like a thing that is continually growing. I see andrea vall on twitter all the time. He's obviously you know a huge golf fan. But you know. I gotta be honest. I didn't really understand the depth of your game until you played in the ellie mae classic in two thousand seventeen. So what was you touched on high school golf but have you. Had you played in any golf tournaments since high school before you took on that challenge. Since high school tournament. We play the american century up. In lake tahoe. A play a maybe five or six summers out of out of the eight before i played nellie mae and that one is different experience. Because i think. If i'm on my game i should be like your top eight favorites a win even though haven't won it yet but when you get on alienate classic on the web dot com when it was a korn ferry now. I'm marie list. How far my game is from a professional that earns money is trying to carve out a career in this game. But i feel like i can hold my own so i had like this ghana irrational confidence in that respect but when i got not to the to the first day i i should say i did the practice round and all that really learning how they approach like the preparation for the week and a i'll put so much stress on like the practice rounds like trying to score and then i yo- you're gonna burn yourself out before that's thursday friday. That's not it. I learned that the first six holes. I was mad. I made a bogey or something like relax so it was. It was such a cool experience in five finals. Then play in front of nineteen thousand fans in crazy gentler russia's out in the court there is absolutely nothing to no way for me to really express how nervous i was on that i even had call him a name. I damn near blacked out on the on. The i just hoped i hit it got in the air it was. It was really kind of out of body experience so well. That's not your. It's not your sport sport. You go just go play. This is not your thing and you know you're doing it for a ton of eyeballs. Got to be that kind of feeling. One hundred percent and other thing that i learned which i don't think people appreciate washing these guys week after week after week is allies exhausted like mentally and physically Being in that mode for five hours straight like pre round during around post round. I get getting engulfed sheet. You know there's athletes out there but it's a different experience of staying locked in engaged in all the different ways that they approach kind of being on top of the game. It's is Is pretty awesome.

Should You Create a Photography Budget?

"After the first week of shooting with the Nikon Z. Five near camera with twenty four to fifty millimeter compact Zoom Lens and compacted is for a full frame. I started asking myself where can I reasonably come up with the seventeen hundred dollars to buy this kit? And you may recall that I talked about this camera a few weeks ago on the podcast and I really liked it i. did I was so impressed with the images that does making from the eastern Sierra and Lake Tahoe with this camera than I thought man, this would be good to have access to all the time. All the time. You know it's not too heavy. The compact twenty, four to fifty millimeter lens was performing really beyond my expectations. And I already have lots of Nikon glass that I could use with an adapter. I don't have the Z. Mount Glass. I would just have the twenty four fifty if I bought the kit. But I have all sorts of F mount stuff I have g lenses and I could get their adapter in use all of that with this camera. So I was very very tempted. Full frame cameras that had shot with in a long time that not only did I like the camera itself not only I enjoy shooting with it. I loved the images and I felt like it was a manageable camera to have with me when I'm hiking and doing things outdoors. So now, we fast forward three weeks later. And I'm boxing up the Nikon's e five in attaching the shipping label to return it to be an H. Photo who had let me use it for a month of for review purposes. So by this point I was okay sending it back. I didn't want to but it was the right decision. So I went from you know that first week just really being infatuated with it wanting to hang onto it. I still want to hang onto it but over the course of the next three weeks, I got to the point to where I can send it back. You know pretty much like I was supposed to. So, how did I get from Point A to point B right? Now I can look you straight in the Mike in say I'm okay. Sending it back. I really have. Here's how. Because, that seventeen hundred dollars plus probably another four hundred dollars for accessories and especially, I was GonNa need you know the adapter? So I could use my f Mount Lenses. That was not in my twenty twenty photography budget. In fact, you know we're only in October and I have less than seven hundred dollars left to spend. So back to New York the Z five goes now that wasn't the only factor in I'll. I'll explain a little bit more about that, but it was definitely a factor. You know I have done my budget ahead of time I do it about this time of year for the next year. I have made some very good purchases that I'm in love with. And seven hundred dollars left and Z five just doesn't fit in that tiny little window of seven hundred dollars doesn't even come close. So the funny thing is even though. On one level I hate them I'm a big Fan of budgets right? You know. I guess it is the ultimate love hate relationship. You Know I. Have An overall budget for the business you know and I run that monthly and that's for the. Business and then I have a breakout budget specially forget and that's more what I'm talking about today. And then I create budgets for trips as well. Well, at least I did until about six months ago. And I haven't created any of those lately at all I wonder why wonder why? I do the photography budget because it protects me from me I know how easily a new camera or a new land can turn my head I. Know that about me I do. So easily in fact, that I usually have to create a pros and cons list in addition to a budget to reach a sound decision I'll give you some examples earlier this year. I wanted to by the OEM D one mark three, right I had had it on loan I loved shooting with it. You know I went to Costa Rica with it. I had it with me in Costa Rica along with some lenses. and. I was truly impressed with this camera and I'm already shooting Olympus. It was eighteen hundred dollars then when I when I first resisted and now even worse for me, you can get one for fourteen hundred dollars. You can get the M one mark three for fourteen hundred dollars. That is a good value. I'm telling you right now. But you know that's still twice as much as my remaining senator dollars in my budget to tell you the truth. This is where the pros and cons comes in as well. I really can't justify it because my mark to is still an amazing camera that thing has been producing great images for such a long continues to do so.

Nikon Z5 Review

"So, one of the things that attracted me to the Nikon see five was the nick or twenty four to fifty millimeter f four to six point three Zoom Lens that you can get bundled with the camera. Now, both together are one, thousand, six, hundred, ninety, six dollars. So that's not exactly pocket change, but it is less than some of the other full featured full frame cameras on the market. What I really liked about this compact twenty, four to fifty millimeter zoom is that for a full frame camera, it really is compact. In fact, it has this mechanism that reminds me of a Pentax Lens that I have that we new twist it all the way it actually pulls all the way into the body. The knows all the way into the body, and then when you want to use it, you have to twist at the other. To release the lands and then it does at zooming thing from there. So the Nice thing about it is that when you're packing it or putting it in a case or something. It really is fairly compact for a full frame Lens Ns alight as well. So my thinking was that this tandem would be a good full frame option for hiking and travel. So I decided to put the theory to the test with eight mile hike to crystal cove in South Lake Tahoe. Now, before I, tell you how that went let's take a closer look at the specs for this camera. And again, we're talking about the Nikon is e five murless camera. Okay. Here we go. The first one is a four point three megapixel seamus sensor with x speed six processor. So. That gives you ISO sensitivity. The way up to fifty one, thousand, two, hundred. Now they say in their marketing materials quick shooting at four point, five frames per second. Most of us would not think as four point, five frames per second as fast bursts. Okay. Not Anymore not after shooting with some of the cameras that we do. So there is the first area where you go. Okay this is not top of the line, but it's probably fine for travel for landscape. You know for hiking for things like that right it's a really nice censor by the way I love the image quality that it produces. Now, the auto focus system has two hundred, seventy, three selective points. In. As a hybrid system that uses both face detection and contrast detection methods and I would say that the autofocus is quite decent every now and then I was surprised when it took it a second to figure something out that didn't seem that hard to me but overall pointed I pressed I captured and it went very well my hit rate was quite high. I was only using however the twenty four to fifty millimeter Lens. In fact, I'll talk a bit more about that in just a few minutes. Now, it has a nice three point two, inch, one, million LCD screen that you know goes up and down right it doesn't swing out it's not fully articulated, but it has the up and down articulation which I actually prefer for most things unless I'm going to be using the camera for video for photography I like the up and down tilt a lot better the screen. Is, quite. Nice, it also is a touchscreen and you can operate the camera from the screen itself if you wish, and then has a three point, six, nine, million dollars, electric viewfinder, and it is a quite good I, like the view, the electronic, find her a lot. It's interesting how often though when I'm out nature I, find myself shooting via the LCD screen as opposed to the electronic viewfinder. Just because I, like those different angles I really do however when I'm doing electron viewfinder photography and I'm looking through that. From. The Nikon I like it. I like what I see I like the readouts on the inside. It's really easy on the eyes and quite pleasurable. Now one thing that we do get even though this is not top of the line. Camera in the Nikon lineup is we get dual SD memory card slots in their st memory card sauce which. Some of us, prefer to the the newer standards and they both both slots support you H S too. So they are high speed and there's two of 'em there and I would say that as one of the really nice features of this camera.

Trump to hold rallies in Nevada despite restrictions

"Trump campaign announced that the president was coming here are not only for our fundraiser for these two events one in Saturday in Reno in one on Sunday here in Las Vegas, and then the fundraiser I believe would be which somewhere in between on the president would stay overnight here in in Las Vegas but obviously the corona virus rules limit in-person gatherings to fifty people and Donald trump draws a huge crowd we've said before on this podcast, there's no denying one thing and that is donald trump will draw a huge crowd wherever he goes and so the reno-tahoe Airport Authority informed. The private lessors of the airplane hangar where trump had planned to do his Reno Rally that holding that rally would be in violation of the governor's coronavirus restrictions, and additionally that AH demonstrations encountered demonstrations would interfere with airport operations. Both of those things would be in violation of the lease, and so the the tenants of the airport hangar basically said, well, we can't this, and so we're we're going to have to cancel that in Las Vegas it's a little more murky because the party indicated today that it had worked with the owners of the serious aviation airport hangar were that rally was supposed to be held. but that they had not work with the airport and the airport said a plane on the record yesterday that they were never asked whether or not a here, a rally could be held and therefore they never said no to holding a rally because you can't deny permission for something that you were never asked for permission to do. So it's a little more murky there and that has created the impression that these things were announced. In an anticipation that they would be rejected, which would allow the party to not only attack one of its favorite targets here in Nevada Governor Steve Cecil lack who is the person who has imposed these corona virus restrictions on in person gatherings. But also to to claim in a larger sense that Democrats were trying to censor the president trying to keep his fans from seeing him and to basically create a grievance would that they knew would happen I. It was it was a foregone conclusion that they were going to be rejected for this. Now, we're told as we tape this, we're told that. The trip is still on the president is still coming and that perhaps rallies will still be held. We don't know when we don't know where we don't know what venue we don't know how big they they will be or how they will get around the corona virus restrictions because it's going to be very difficult to do whether you do it indoors outdoors wherever you do it those restrictions are really going to put a limit on how many people can attend presidential rally and so There was a repeated reference in today's call and we'll talk more about the cause where he said in a second to having two sets of rules and the rules would be that if you're the Republicans, will you have to abide by the fifty? Person Restrictions, and if you were the Democrats you don't have to do that and look no further than the black lives matter protesters, couple of things about that number one. The Black Latin black lives matter protesters are in fact, breaking the law there they are. They're going against the coronavirus restrictions. So. When they protest they're in violation of the governor's order. There's no question about that because there's more than fifty people they're not practicing social distancing some of them are not wearing masks, etcetera etcetera. A better analogy would be are the Democrats being denied permission to hold their rallies and the answer is no but only because the Democrats have not attempted to hold their rallies, they have not attempted to a whole day a big rally The way president trump has attempted to hold these to rally. So it's really not the same I don't think that there are. Two sets of rules I. think There's one set of rules. The Republicans are being frustrated because they're trying to hold these rallies and they're being told no, they can't, and then they said, well, what about the black lives matter protesters and the answer is, will they're breaking the rules absolutely breaking the rules but I it's a you know the authorities technically could cite them but look. You're GONNA site You know thousands of people were out there protesting they're also not inside the venue where the venue could be cited in the owners could be fine. The way the gels for trump a site it were cited for a in-person gathering that exceeded the fifty person

"You're kind of. you're not as vulnerable to you know you could just ride it out but planning number one and dawn did a great job planning and just Kinda let her. Where we where we left off there. So thanks Tehran. So into we we we completed this site last summer in two thousand, nineteen On. August eleventh. But we actually section heights So, we just did like some short sections of it in two, thousand eighteen and a while they were probably like nine to. Fifteen miles segments, and as we were doing these segments where you know the Tahoe grim trail is a complete loop around Lake Tahoe on the rim. Of Lake Tahoe of the mountains of the mountain. Yet not on the rim of like not on the beach. For a long walk on the beach had some tacos called today. It says it's a hundred and sixty five miles. But, somehow we clocked one, hundred, eighty, five now. I. Don't know it's somewhere between one hundred, sixty, five, hundred, eighty, five miles there are some there have been some rerouted sections in neutral built but. So we started by just section hiking a few a of. The spots of the RIM trail in two thousand eighteen and we ran into some logistical issues because. We thought well, let's just section hike this whole trail. That'll be really cool and you totally can do that and you can hike the whole trail in sections if you don't have time to take off to do the whole trail at once or the desire. My parents that actually yeah yeah. They've done at a time. I. Think they have actually Amer in both directions. Yeah. That's right. Back Wise. An counterclockwise. which is awesome yeah. but it takes a lot of logistics because you have to have basically car where you start in a car where you end or you're just starting in at the same point but then you're kind of like doubling up your miles..

"Part of. Most of our adventures now yeah. well, I'm. I'm so glad that you get to at least share some of your story with everybody because you are. super inspiring to me. You know that we tell each other all the time but your decisions of how you have created a life that suits you is super have been just really cool to watch and how you've kind of built this. New, arena for yourself in in purpose I love it and you started your blog which has been sprint spiring, and so anyway, we're going to talk about some of the things that you've covered on their including your. TRT Hike so let's but how about this since we're in covid During covid. Let's start with? Maybe some things that you've noticed on the trails because I know that you are a hiker, but you've also. been seeing kind of an influx of of people on the trails and I'm curious as a local in the Tahoe area what that has meant to you and what what you've seen happening out there what's going on without nurse? Will definitely? Starting in about March. started to see a lot more people outside which. I mean, honestly for someone who? I think during I compose as see the benefits of being outside and recreating and spending time on trail. There so many amazing things to see and do in. So many amazing benefits of of just being outside and creating outdoors we live in the Tahoe area there's just no shortage of beautiful places so At first it was it was exciting to see how many people were also recognizing not As people were staying home. The they're kinda limited with obviously where they could go and outdoors feels like a a quote unquote quote safe place right now and So. Yeah. Definitely. started seeing a huge influx of people on the trails Unfortunately along with that also seen and heard and read about many many issues out bear pertaining to. Leave no trace or rather leaving more of a trace than. Should be left out there. So a lot more trash more unattended. Human started campfires in pages banned. Campfires here in Nevada indefinitely because of many abandoned campfires they were finding. And so yeah, a little disheartening I also know that. A lot of people are still doing their tahoe through hikes this year. Which? If. You can do that in a socially distanced mannered than awesome unfortunately when there's so many people out there that can become a challenge in. So there's there's actually been numerous articles recently from some of the locals in Tahoe who have just been pretty disgusted at how much. Trash has been left now I think there's probably a little bit more on the beaches in such in less than the trails, but certainly with more people using the trail..

"Those numbers around today. 4.3% growth in June. Which matched the growth rate in the month of May. And if you look year over year, so if you compare this June toe last June, prices in the 20 cities that case Shiller kind of takes a look at Up about 3.5%. But we know of course, that's very localized in there is There is a negative price effect in places like San Francisco and New York City and more positive in less dense areas, even in places like Lake Tahoe. Incline village, their number of places that are doing much better than that. So as usual, it's very localized in terms of real estate in terms of office

"My Name Is Casey Fritos I'm your host, and this week I am joined by Brian Tahoe. Hi Everyone Seth macy. And Logan. Plants. And I just wanted to mention that Logan Plant has now been working as production assistant for the last year. So thank you so much for everything that you've done for us. We super appreciate it and we welcome you on the show this week. It's been an awesome year of NBC. Got This GIG last August starting my senior year of College McMahon. Twenty. It's GONNA be year. It's going to be the best year for me. At prediction was was very untrue, but I've loved working on NBC. Well, we did get to do a thing that we do everybody who's worked with gene for year, which is broken your house in spray painted the logo on your shirt. So yeah. Yeah, got. Bad. It's still drying right here. Comfortable. I Apologize. But Hey guys so much for joining me this week. Let's start off by talking about the big news, which actually Nintendo finally decided to reveal something before recorded. So I'm very grateful for that thanking Intendo, but we finally known antennas next scheduled release. It will be picked three deluxe out on Astra with. For Fifty, nine, ninety, nine. No. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So You Brian, we're your pigment fan I look pick. Yeah, you. excited. Yeah, yes. Yes. Yes. I, am I'm all for. Every last great. We you exclusive game to no longer be that and to be brought to a platform where millions more people can enjoy it. And I've picked threes really fun. It's really good game. What I'm a little annoyed about with this is that. They. D listed the version. Basically, the exact moment that they announced this version and the version was on was selling for twenty dollars. So. That's kind of A. Weird situation. 'cause like. They're. They're basically telling their fans like if. If you have access to switch, this is where you'll have to play this game because you won't be able to get this anywhere else for cheaper. And also that the it's it's three times the price. Now, they're adding stuff to it, which obviously, we'll get into a, but yet my gut reaction was gay pigment three, and then also boo to the price of then also, you're totally going to pay that price, get pigment three under switch. So yeah, you're totally right. The an I also wanted to mention that we're bringing up the kind of skis tactic of taking it off the we shop. You. Guys noticed that all of the the vouchers that people bought I think it was, it was one hundred dollars for for two vouchers, one voucher per game, and they expired on July thirty first, which is right. Before they made this announcement I know at least one person in our podcast forums on facebook mentioned that they actually called Nintendo customer service and asked for the. Vouchers to get an extension and they granted him the extension by another year. It is now too late to do that. Ari. Or maybe not maybe if you have expired vouchers sitting around, you can call customer service and have them I'm so sorry, Nintendo customer service workers. You guys get a flux of collars because of this, but hey, it's worth a shot right especially if you haven't used them yet. But that was kind of embarrassed about this whole thing to like you mentioned, the vouchers are to one hundred bucks, which means if you buy, you know sixty bucks a sixty dollar game you're saving. Ten Bucks per game, which is a great deal. But you. They stopped selling them like a year ago. Yesterday, basically, two days ago, and with the expiration, you could put them towards stuff that was available for preorder. But because Pittman three wasn't available for preorder. You couldn't put it towards that Nintendo has been pretty quiet about. Announcing Twenty Twenty lineup arrested twenty twenty WANNA and so. You didn't really have anywhere to put that money and then. They retire those vouchers in three days. Later, there were like Pittman three and so A. Libertarian Carriers I. Wish I'd have panned out a little bit better. Yeah not crazy about I will. I would have been more forgiving if they announced it like the day, the vouchers expired because then at least people would be like I, have to spend it on this. Now, I mean, it still would have been a little bit questionable, but not nearly as various as this was i. don't Know Logan Seth? Did you guys by those doctors? No, I. Didn't I thought. It was I would just spend the extra ten bucks. I'm not really a digital player I mostly get physical stuff, but I thought another weird thing about it is like a third of the Games. You could get with voucher dollars. You weren't even saving anything on a bunch of the options. So that was another kind of weird part about the voucher system. I was just never onboard with the whole thing. You. No I didn't buy the batches. I. Actually Forgot

And Sacramento. A little north of that would not actually in Nevada. Nope we're in the state of California and we are standing right between Nevada County and Yuba County and we're standing on the beautiful Yuba River which flows down to the feather. And then the Sacramento from there down into the San Francisco Bay in the ocean. So you were a county board of Supervisors member when you first came here. Tell us about your first experience with this. Damn down a few different times over my life had been here my whole life. It was built and commissioned in nineteen forty seven by the Army Corps of Engineers so that people could resume hydraulic mining blocks hundreds of miles of potential fish passage for fish. Come from the ocean and go up into the high sierra to lay their eggs so when I first came to the damn understanding that the state of California had targeted this spot em federal government as maybe the best place to restore passage at the very first meeting we went to the. Us Geological Survey stood up and said you can't do anything to that. Damn until you look at the material behind it is holding back a whole bunch of mercury and that was the very first time I had ever heard anything about mercury and the state of California and its role in the goal rush. Or how long have you lived in this part of the world? My family came to California as part of the Gold Rush. We were quakers. Escaping the east coast. Ten violent religious oppression moved out to become farmers I was raised in Concord California on that form and in one thousand nine hundred five. I married a farmer and we moved to Nevada county beautiful organic farm in a place called Penn Valley. Tell us about this county and just its history and the gold rush because it is a lot of history here. Nevada county was ground zero of the California Gold Rush. Far More gold was taken out of this county and specifically this river that we're standing above than any other place in the state of California. It's where the very destructive technique called hydraulic mining which is using power water monitors to to scrub mountainside. Looking for gold is where that was invented. They started to dam the rivers and convey that water over to these huge hydraulic mining activities. Which were recovering thousands of of gold but millions of tons of sediment not material here from Nevada county rolled down the river and kept flooding the Sacramento Valley and eventually the farmers downstream who are really tired of having their houses filled with all this debris sued and stopped the activity known as hydraulic mining. Was the connection between Mercury and gold. Tell us how that process works. Everybody came to understand that the very dramatic impact of hydraulic mining because it was blowing these huge amounts of sediment down the river. But people didn't understand. Was that before they use. Those hydraulic monitors. They would treat the cliffs with Mercury Mercury on the cliff. Pound the cliffs with water the water to wash down into sluices and in those sluice boxes were also filled with mercury. Why did they use mercury keep? Mercury helped enhance called processing. It has a unique ability to amalgamate or hold the gold. So little tiny flecks of gold. That might be smaller than an eyelash would fall into the pan. But they're just wash out unless they were captured by mercury. Mercury would grab the gold. Make it heavy fall to the bottom of the sluice. When they turn the water off. Miners would come through and suck that mercury out of the bottom of the sluice they would take the mercury put it in a hot place they would call retort it like think of a hot iron frying pan and the mercury sort of melting off the top or or training into gas off the top and at the bottom of your pan. You'd have sparkling gold. The problem is curious. Mercury is a very dangerous neuro toxin. And it's dangerous in a variety of ways so badly that the United Nations World Health Organization Amnesty of California have both named it. The top bioaccumulative toxic material of concern. Mercury is a neuro toxin. It affects the developmental human being so our ability to deform our nerves are heart or lungs. Our brains it creates Serious birth defects and people have focused on that for many many years but as research has been done we learn that it continues to damage us as adults. It seems to be causing problems with our hearts with our lungs and with our various different organs which accumulate mercury. So it's a known neuro toxin and that's strike one against it strike to is it bioaccumulates in our body. It doesn't really easily leave our bodies many of the things we take in. Let's take alcohol. You drink it and two days later. It's all out of your body not so with Mercury it stores itself in your body and builds up over time strike. Three is that this material does. What's called bio magnifies in the environment? So the most dangerous place for a piece of mercury to be is in water particularly in warm water. Mercury is taken up by the little bugs at the bottom of the food chain. They eat a little bit of it. It transfers up to the bigger bugs and then the bigger bugs and then the fish and then the humans or as we watch here today. The waterbirds that are flying around might pick up. Officiant eat it. They are eating a highly toxic potent load of mercury so much so that the lake. We're looking here like Anglo. Bright has fish advisories on it that advice that a woman of childbearing age eat not a single bass out of this lake fish mornings. I run along this Anchorman River. There will along the Sacramento. And then you go down to San Francisco Bay. The same warnings that so it's in fact the entire ecosystem. The mercury that is in the Delta is entirely from these legacy minds in the areas. We are the gold mines and sadly for California. We had a unique geology which led us have mercury in our state as well. The coastal range has the mercury minds. Whether it's the ones down in San Jose or the ones Tamales Bay or up over on the clear lake there are serious old legacy mercury minds which are contaminating the coastal range and the tributaries that drain from there into the bay or into the ocean where we are everywhere. There was gold mining. They use this mercury not only for the the hydraulic mining but also for the hard rock mines which dominated the landscapes for one hundred years and all of those continue to leak mercury into the state of California water bodies every time it rains

"Since one thousand nine hundred sixty. California has officially been known as the Golden State. And that's because as the plaque reads California's development and remarkable prosperity began with the discovery of gold humanities. Love of gold is fairly bizarre of all the hundred and eighteen elements in the periodic table. Gold is the only one which we humans have always gravitated towards gold was used earliest currencies. Gold joined us in marriage and was used to produce most precious artifacts. Maybe the secret to our love of gold is simply that it's beautiful and never tarnishes in eighteen. Fifty-three my father's great grandfather Henry. Cohn traveled from a tiny stelle. In what is now Poland to Hamburg where he boarded a boat and six months later. After walking across the isthmus of Panama Henry ended up in San Francisco. Henry Cohn was part of the Goldrush the largest mass migration in American history bringing about three hundred thousand people to California. It all started in eighteen. Forty eight when James Marshall found gold in his piece of land at Sada's mill in Coloma. The News of gold quickly spread around the world. At first the gold could be picked up from the ground but later on it was recovered from the streams and rivers with the use of panned. The gold rush peaked in eighteen fifty. Two and after that the Gold Rassoul getting thinner and harder to reach soon largescale and more environmentally damaging methods of traction cold hydraulic mining were employed. One hundred and seventy years later on the environmental legacy of the gold rush a significant and yet acknowledged as we'll discover in today's episode mercury which is a deadly neurotoxin was elemental to the process of gold-mining today large quantities of mercury from the gold. Russia's still polluting California posing a risk to every kind of living organism including us. I travel up to California's gold country to meet with Izzy Mountain. Izzy is a community organizer and environmental advocate with over forty years of experience working in rural communities to economic and environmental justice. She is what with a wide variety of constituencies from tribal leaders to Maynas and from farmers to forest is is. He first entered local politics. Signs From North Korea Only Raise More Questions About Absent Kim Jong Un

"Enormous speculation as to the well-being otherwise if the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He's not been seen in public for over a fortnight missing key public events. Initially reports carried by daily N Que a media outlet run largely by North Korean. Defectors said that he might be dead or critically. Ill later reporting that. He'd undergone treatment for cardiovascular complications other stories circulating in the media said a heart operation had been botched by nervous surgeon with shaking hands. Now we know Kim is morbidly obese. He's reportedly a heavy smoker and drinker may be diabetic and suffers from hypertension. Both his father and his grandfather died from cardio related ailments. North Korea has been utterly silent on the subject but if he is dead will destabilize the state and who would take over John? Everard is the former British government. Signed Busta to Pyongyang. He's on the line. John Lovely to speak to you again. Is He alive or dead? I'm pretty sure he's alive. Not least because two days ago he sent a congratulatory message to President Ramaphosa of South Africa. Now I suppose it's possible that these messages are being sent out on his behalf but even though he's passed away but I don't think so that's simply not the way the North Koreans do things. But he certainly not around. The last confirmed sighting of Kim. Jong UN was on eleven April at which point he looked. Fine I mean he was hosting a his chairing a politburo meeting and he didn't look any worse than he normally does. But then the big shock. He failed to appear on Fifteenth April. The birthday of his grandfather and founding Kimmel soon every year. There's a big ceremony where the royal family all troop off to Kimmel. Psalms mausoleum to pay their respects not to do so is simply unthinkable surprised foreign observers and north. Korean draws must have dropped I mean the last time he disappeared for review for a substantial time if he had six weeks later walking with a cane apparently due to surgery on his ankle. Do you think we should assume that? This is health related He's not just having a luxury lockdown somewhere. I don't think we kind of humorous health related as you sit in your introduction there have been reports that He underwent heart surgery. That didn't go well. But the sourcing of those reports is really very wobbly. Indeed and it's quite possible that there simply wrong all do. Nathanson is that he hasn't been seen he failed to appear. added grandfather's birthday. But he's still messages. Is He. Sick it is. It's possible but if if so why then didn't he send a flower basket to his grandfather was in? Which is what you always do in North Korea in these circumstances also if he is sick what has happened to his younger sister. Kim Yo John. She didn't show up either. In fact she to US disappeared. So what a body victim has taken them both out. I think it's possible that the problem is not medical but political. Iggy means some kind of fracture within the regime. Yes that somebody has decided that it's time for a not exactly a soft coup but four. Kim's on to be removed from the immediate levers of power so he keeps his titles in the official reports of the messages that he has been sending out to vice presidents he's given orders full titles we continues to rain but we don't know whether he continues to rule and of course the South Koreans are saying they think he's in one sandwiches a port and seaside resort on the east of North Korea. What's he doing there? Wouldn't make sense if it's a medical problem because spills somewhere it would make sense if he's been arrested or is just in lockdown like the rest of the world why though e- during the worst of the pandemic he continued his normal activities and was photographed chiefly hugging people. Not a social distancing there now The pandemic and China is receding North Korea is claiming no cases. Why would you want to go into self-isolation matter? It doesn't make sense so John I mean I was going to ask you about who the possible people to take over from him. Off is being the obvious contender but this is. This is astonishing news that perhaps a soft coup has happened. What would that mean for the country? We don't know a lot of because if it has happened and we're we're we're we're we don't know this we're all guessing we don't know who has let it. It might be hard line as what it might be liberals They're all factions of in both directions at the royal court and of course a North Korean aunt saying anything at all I could easily produce a a list of possible. North Korean candidates who might be leading government for you but frankly it wouldn't be worth much so I mean we had. Obviously we thought that this the ruling would stay within the family. It is after all the world's only communist monarchy rarely could go to someone outside the family and if that is the case one name that seems to being bandied about is Tahoe's a North Korean defector. He's part of the the government in South Korea. He does seem to be readying himself for the challenge. I think if they were a unification of the two careers. Tim Ho Foolish not though. He's a buddy of mine so I'm biased. But he would probably play a significant role in this. I'm not sure that he would be offered or would see a leadership role.

Today's Morons...There's no licking at the grocery store

"One of things that this terrible global pandemic created for all of us a whole new category of war on in the news. And that's the person who thinks the viruses a hoax and they go in and they commit all sorts of acts of assault and vandalism using their bodily fluids and coughing sneezing as more of the day is Jennifer Walker. She comes to us from South Lake. Tahoe and she went into a first restores. Landau a safe place for. She's fifty three years old by the way so for anybody that thinks. Oh these kids today. Every one of the people that are doing that have done. This kind of crime are all at least forty years old. She's fifty three years old. She walked into the grocery store and she began licking things and ultimately she licked nearly two thousand dollars worth of merchandise all of which had to be trashed because none of it was being saved for sale. She's been charged with felony vandalism because guess what after she licked everything it touched everything and then lifted. Some more turned out that she wasn't going to be able to pay for single one of those items so they arrested or charged with felony vandalism. They talked her into L. Dorado County jail which sounds like something on but cowboy movie. She's being held on ten thousand dollars. Bond. And because we've never had a situation with the woman living in today it's kind of unclear. What sort of punishment? We're going to have people to do this kind of thing. If you WANNA see what a fifty-three-year-old grocery licking evil person looks like tech the word Moron to eighteen sixty seven or seven. We will send it straight to your phone and you'll be automatically entered to win our special Bobby Terry Hand sanitizer which is called people. Make me sick. You know. That's the second woman in the last week or so. Who has done something like that? Do you remember the story? I had a woman who licked something like thirty two thousand dollars worth of groceries and meats and seafood and and then was arrested taken right to jail and they. That store wants money. Thirty two thousand dollars you know. Here's what I'm thinking. There is somebody who's either online or he's got a radio show. Tv show and he's calling bs on all of this and he's telling people to do things that are disrupted and there are certain amount of people who are stupid enough to listen. It's like we learned from the dark night. Some people just want to watch the world burn We had that woman in Wisconsin. Movie linking the handles of a grocery store freezer. And I don't care what you believe. Don't believe what you think or don't think if you're willing to put your tongue on something that a million people have touched you're

"Tahoe affordable and the first step that is just google anything about budget, Tahoe winter and go to our website Yes, that's so convenient that we have a giant practical guide to planning a lake tahoe winter trip on a budget, or you can just click. The link in the show notes that works. Up so you might be asking what else is there to do. If you're not into skiing or snowboarding, because you know Donna Party, your leg all right, have we not moved on from the Donner Party Jeremy? It's just getting really annoying at this point and I wish he would stop, so there's sledding in tubing you can You can tube at Sierra and you can rent the tube. Tube, and go up this little moving sidewalk, or or you can do it the hard way, and by a to Amazon. They have some really fine animals in silly shapes. There's like a fire dragon. He's Kinda. My favorite and you can just like go to a good health, so we went to spooner summit last year, and just like walked up a little hill, and then to down the. The Little Hill and it was a very good workout and also a lot of fun. There's also snowshoeing. Most of the major resorts will have snow shoe trails, but Kirkwood has like a whole snowshoeing center. Yeah, which is basically just hiking, but like legalizing on top of this now she's pretty awesome. There's my favorite Tahoe in winter activity, which is just sitting in a hot tub if you're. You're GONNA rent a cabin and lake. Tahoe which showed there are some available like Vr B, O or AIRBNB. There are some pretty strict laws now surrounding, but you can still find them and do not rent without a hot tub because they should have one that is like that is a requirement. I think that I think that at some point it might have been state mandated that. Yeah. It's actually part of the like contentious new laws about AIRBNB Pantley. Some do she millennials from the bay area where like enjoying themselves too loudly in the hot tub and that is why out stricter restrictions, so if you go to the hot tub, you do so quietly..

"Not either need to put chains on your car or have have all wheel drive very important definitely recommend especially if you're renting a car. Just go for the four wheel drive. It's worth it because chains you can't rent them because you can't like reuse them you can by them along the way you can buy them along the way. They're fairly expensive. Depending on where you go you can get them cheaper if you get closer to chain control but you're just kind of rolling the dice there that they suck doc to put on this sucks so much to put on because you're just like in the snow putting on chains. It's the worst thing called. It is almost as bad as getting stuck there for four months and having. I'm sorry I couldn't almost that. I made it for math so these days. We go at least once a year at least sometimes more honestly eh usually bring a big group of friends and we get cabin. We gotta make sure that there's like a hot tub. Everybody brings snacks and cook a big meal together and have us go. Go to a ski resort. It's really fun. And it's like one of our favorite things to do. We actually just got back this last weekend. We went to a group of friends took ski. Listen I did. I took one ski. USN go cried like a lot. But I finished it. which was my goal? My number one goal was finished the ski lesson. My number to stretch goal was like don't cry so I didn't hit that goal but I did finish the ski lesson and I'm very proud of myself. You can see me being a majestic baby giraffe on skis on my instagram stories under the Tejo Highlight we usually go to South Lake Tahoe mainly because I really like Sierra The thing about Tahoe in the winter though is that in the summer are you can drive from north to south and that's totally fine and it's a beautiful drive and you should do it. It's a beautiful drive also beautiful hike but in the winter you have to commit to North or South because you can't. I usually take the highway route around because it's usually snowed in Yeah so we usually do. South Lake Tahoe but actually both of them are really nice. There's there's very similar things about both of them. Neither of them have like a very walkable. Downtown area I've heard truck. He is really cute but we haven't actually been neither of them had like amazing. Seizing food like Tom. Who is not a foodie destination? Hold on there's the German restaurant I do love the German Restaurant House House. You've never really good special there. It's like my favorite post hike post skiing now that I've done one ski lesson food. And those also Bob dog the dog a bout. It is pretty good pizza. But it's not it's not like a foodie place you don't go there for the food so honestly picking North or South Lake Tahoe depends entirely on which ski resorts you prefer. and which ones you're going to now. You should know before you go there if you're an east coaster who moved to California and you're like I have skied before you skied a hill. These are gigantic granite mountains mountains. And I say this as somebody who was born in Massachusetts and went to school in Massachusetts and. Yeah he's right it's totally different so there are a ton of ski resorts in Dachau and we can't cover them all here but we can talk about some of our favorites. What is your favorite mine? I always go back to his Sierra. Tahoe it has a special place in my heart mark. The first one I went to. It's the first major wine you hit when you're heading into South Lake and it's one of it's one of the cheaper options and they have a lot of really good I'd like beginner. And Intermediate runs their blues are a little bit easier than most places. So beginners have a lot there. it's also the least crowded. I don't think there's ever been a day where I've where I've waited more than two minutes for a ski lift. which is crazy yeah? It wasn't all this weekend and it's one of the only remaining independently owned ski resorts in Tahoe. Which is really nice? You can tell it's got that like family kind of vibe. It's not like one of the big crazy ones that has like the flashy village or whatever never in it's also sponsored by Subaru which has no bearing on your experience but I just think it's kind of a fun fact. Is that because we own a saber. Al Yes the Saverio belonged to my late grandmother who was also a Subaru Person. She was wonderful. See people we love them. There's boreal mountain boils like probably the most budget friendly but the thing about it is that they have have a freestyle terrain park. That does not sound like my cup of tea. There's there's runs. That aren't the train park. But that's like the main that most of them are terrain. And you pass right by the Donner Party Memorial morial on your way there take it back. We have to go there. That's my new favorite ski resort. I love free styling. I love people. I have to sleep next tonight. This is weird. There's home would which is on the West Shore. It's really small inexpensive and it's got the best view because it's right on the shore. That sounds sounds actually really nice. View is the priority. Then that's the choice for you. Yeah actually that sounds wonderful and last time we were at Costco because we always stop at Costco. Go to see if they have discount lift tickets usually they have Sierra tickets But this year they had homeward think. There's they've stopped carrying zero. It's hard to know but definitely stop by Costco to see if they have discount lift tickets because they usually got something home woods mostly intermediate. But it's still a fantastic option. Let about the Philly higher priced options. So so there's two that immediately come to mind when you think of Tahoe and that Squaw Valley and heavenly it is actually so having these avail L. resort probably the most famous in Tahoe. It's also the largest. It's got a couple of base lodges in one of them is actually in the town of South Lake. Tahoe if you like a walkable area with like shops and stuff heavenly village is definitely what you're looking for. They have a Gondola from the actual town. That's like on the main dragon. A teachable all the way up the mountain and it's right on the border with Nevada. So if you like casinos. They're right there for you. Listen we're going to be honest. We are very very biased towards the California side notice. We have not talked about the Nevada side at all 'cause casinos mostly sorry and then there's squad Alpine So a squad is like for serious people or people who WanNa get lost in Siberia It hosted the Winter Olympics in nineteen eighteen sixty. So that's like that gives you a gauge of how challenging the terrain can be. But it's you know it's like an all all levels resort because it's a major resort. I've actually heard that it's like a really early. Like advanced resort for people that are like very serious about being eighty ski montage stars. They do have beginner runs. But they're typically at the lower side of the mountain and then sugarbowl resort. I like sugar bowl resort because it is another independently owned resort and their claim to fame is being one of the oldest ski resorts in the West and having the deepest pissed and most ridiculous. No out of any of the tahoe resorts and also and this is fun. Little facts which is a semi related. It's located on Donner summit at Donner Pass whereas Donner Pass. Jeremy What does that have to do with We're just talking about. Do you do you everything to come back to the Donner Party. Everything has has to come back to the Donner Party. But also Disney which is my other obsession because Walt Disney was one of the original founders of this resort. That's going to be a trip soon. Actually that's GonNa that'd be the next episode. We're GONNA do it. There are some luxury ski resorts. Kirkwood northstar lovely. How are they couldn't tell you? Never been if you are the type of person who goes to luxury ski resorts. Please let us know how that is. How how that life is like? We are very curious. Now you might be asking like isn't Lake Tahoe. Oh always expensive and the answer is that it doesn't have to be. It really doesn't like you'd think that you know everybody going to Tahoe. Every weekend is super rich and yes. It's true skiing and snowboarding are not the cheapest sports but it doesn't have to be you. Don't have to go skiing snowboarding. While you're there you can go to a budget place and get a cheaper ticket. There are so many ways to make your trip to Tahoe. Oh affordable and the first step that is just google anything about budget tahoe winter and go to our website Yes that's so convenient that we have a giant practical guide ride to planning a lake tahoe winter trip on a budget or you can just click the link in the show notes that works so you might be asking. What else is there to do? If you're not into skiing skiing or snowboarding because you know Donna party breaking your leg all right have. We not moved on from the Donner Party. Jeremy it's just getting really annoying at this point and I wish he would stop. So there's sledding into being you can You can tube Sierra and you can rent the tube and go up this little moving sidewalk or or you can do it the hard way and by a to Amazon. They have some really fine line animals in silly shapes. There's like a fire dragon. He's Kinda my favorite and you can just like go to a good health so we went to spooner summit last year and just like walked up Capitol Hill and then tube down the Little Hill and It was a very good workout and also a lot of fun. There's also snowshoeing. Most of the major resorts will have snow shoe trails. uh-huh Kirkwood has like a whole snowshoeing center. Yeah which is basically just hiking but like legalizing on top of this now. She's pretty awesome. There's my favorite Tahoe in winter. Tippety which is just sitting in a hot tub if you're GONNA rent a cabin and Lake Tahoe which showed there are some available like VR B. O or AIRBNB. There are some. I'm pretty strict laws now surrounding that. But you can still find them and do not rent without a hot tub because they should have one that is like that is a requirement. I think that I think uh-huh some point it might have been state mandated that. Yeah Yeah it's actually part of the like contentious new laws about AIRBNB. Apparently some do she millennials from in the bay area where like enjoying themselves too loudly in the hot tub And that is why Verron out stricter restrictions so if you go to the hot tub you do so quietly also trying to slip on the stairs because I did last week and my entire but is black with bruises. Yeah it's rough speaking of falling on your but you can ice skating at heavenly village. That sounds Cathodic so hard. Pass on that. There's dog sledding. It's coie which sounds adorable. There's huskies that you can you can. Dog sled with sounds amazing. I'm not sure the ethical side of it though so you got to look at it. I'd have to do some research. I have been dog. sledding in Norway in it was ethical you can definitely have awesome ethically responsibly treated dogs but they are not. There's no consensus on whether dog sledding is ethical. It depends on the place so I can't tell you if they have been vetted or not. I have not done that research. If you want something that Leah will never do or I will never do you go cross country skiing Royal Gorge which is the largest cross country ski area. Are you in North America. I don't know why you would say that I would never do it because you should know that. I love Scandanavia one of my favorites. We've come full circle. I really do want to go back to Tahoe again. I know we were just there two days ago days ago. It's been it's been a while I would like to go back really miss it you know. Yeah and while we were there I would like to go to The memorial please. Please take me v Memorial. Yes you know the the memorial gets buried in Snow Right. That's traction well. Hopefully this has gotten you guys a little bit hungry to visit my brother cannibals. It's all we should do like a count of how many times we talked about it on her party in this episode. Because I feel like a lot. Yeah can you guys let us know how many we did. And I think that it would be appropriate to to end today with Some pretty radical eighty ski montage music.

"Anxious for your safety so besides omens what is there to nothing less podcast over that was it. We just wanted to tell some stories about ourselves on the next episode. We're going to be talking Well let's talk about summer. I so by everything to do in Tahoe John. The summer is go camping. We mentioned deal bliss. It's like one of the best campsites in I think ever in the whole world it's awesome we might. I have an unfair opinion here because one time we rolled into. Dl Bliss like just trying to find a spot and we actually got the nicest campsite. They're probably ever just like show up at a spot you do. It's very competitive to get a spot and deal bliss what we usually do. There's something you can do on reservation dot Gov where you reserve federal campsites. It's you can basically choose your weekend and set up an alert and if somebody else cancels their spot you got their spot. So that's how we roll up with the best campsite because we had gotten somebody else's spot did actually book six months in advance. Like you have to do to get a good spot. All thanks goes but that was really really nice. There was like a bridge in the camp site which was awesome. And they're all right next next to the lake There is a beautiful private beach in that camp site. It's awesome it's really really nice. there's also Meeks Bay so many spe is Down on the shore of Lake Tahoe. And there's Meeks Bay resort. You can camp there as well and that's kind of like right across the street from sort of one of our favorite hikes which we'll talk about In a minute so you get the campsite on the beach and then What are some things that you like to do over there? Well obviously there. Is the beach like tacos awesome beaches. I mean and this like we say that coming from California Allegra we just got beaches on beaches all over the place both sides. It's awesome And you can swim swimming. A swimming area Out like all right off the shore basically basically it is a little cold but compared to the Pacific Ocean. It's actually not that bad people actually rent boats and you can go boating. Yeah we haven't been fancy and acting like a big you know schooner sooner sooner sooner or yacht are those those things are called. We've never had a We have gotten kayaks though which which is great kayaking is one of my favorite things to do when they tahoe and supping. Yeah you can do stand up paddle boarding. Yeah we did that what happened. Do you remember what happened. Do you remember what happened. Tell me about what happened. What happened Leo was was better at it than you? The person who can't even stand up straight because her balances so bad was better at stand up paddle boarding. Yes the world is then. I tried it again in Panama and I was really bad at it. And you're way better at it but I was better at it in Tahoe. And that's what matters you'll talk to you about it in Panama. Yeah well it only happened once. But that's why I stand up. Paddle boarding in lake. Tahoe is the best in the world. 'cause let me twice and I was better at it in Lake Tahoe You can also go waterfall hopping. There's like waterfalls all over the place I was GonNa make a joke but then I realized that we did that in the episode description of the title of the episode episode. Last time. I know as long as you don't make me waterfall. Repel I'm good. Tell me about these waterfalls world. Luckily they're smaller than you're used to. Eagle falls is an Emerald Bay. It's there's a little alcove in the lake on the southwest side and and It's a short hike of a hill and you'll just follow the crowds from the Emerald Bay parking lot it's really pretty And it's really like a very quick hike. We say very quick and we're the ones saying quick. He knows actually probably like a one minute. Walk if you're in the south there's also horse tail waterfall. So it's on your way into South Lake Tahoe. The actual town It's eight hundred feet tall and so it's the largest one On thank you. It's the largest one in the area and there's Glen Alpine falls which is right about Fallen Leaf Lake where I've actually gone in hiking a few times around fallen leaf lake and it's cute little ache much smaller than Lake Tahoe. But absolutely beautiful but that one is cool because the water kinda like cascades down these little cliffs so it has has like that waterfall staircase look which really like. Looks like a damn screen saver and you are a really serious hiker. You can attempt the Tahoe rim trail. So let me just give you the backpacker spiel about Tahoe rim. So backpacker describes it as a great long trail for beginners or a laid-back laid-back. Walk in the woods for seasoned Thru Hikers. That sounds perfect for actually. Yeah it's one hundred and sixty five miles long over mind cause all the way around the lake but the good news is there are a lot of places where you can stop and the cop off your hiked. Lots of towns stopping got refuels so it actually does sound like a fairly beginner entry level through hake AAC And it takes about ten to fifteen days though honestly like if we can get back in our hiking I would not mind doing it. Sounds pretty awesome. Actually I really liked desolation wilderness. Elder nece what's it called the solution. That sounds johnstone sounds scary. I was imagining fog everywhere and being lost in like a murky haunted forest filled with like rabid bears fresh carcasses like this is going weirdly. Donner Friday thing. Just let it go all right. Just hold on a few minutes. I was expecting slender Mandalay. Give me directions but actually it's it's gorgeous and really stunning scenery. Probably the most money scenery in Lake Tahoe. Oh yeah there are like a bunch of charred trees which does give it like that creepy. Feel that I was really wanting Because there was a wildfire that went through a while ago please be safe about your fires. y'All leave no trace race but actually no. It's it's stunning gorgeous. And we did that hike. Do you remember Meeks Bay to cry. Lake which is like nine miles round trip desolation wilderness is actually a really big stretch of land so the great thing about it is that you can kind of do an out and back over you want so. We chose Craig Lake. Yes startling across the street from the campsite Meeks Bay and when we started. Actually it was foggy Augie like we had a little bit of that ownby all scary fog which was fantastic. Everything was a little bit eerie. So we just kind of hiked into desolation wilderness nine miles and a and we climbed all the way up. We want some rocky granite cliffs which is a tongue twister Saudis George views and. Then we started hitting these lakes like one. After a- another there was all these Alpine lakes about five miles in you start hitting them and we wanted to stop it every single one of them. They were all gorgeous. I know we didn't think that it could possibly get more gorgeous. This but Craig Lake is the best one every other Alpine Lake is inferior to Craig Lake worth continuing. Its in. This valley created by mountain peaks and the lake is just a perfect mirror. It's so instagram. I know we had lunch there. And then we head back and it was perfect. My other favorite favorite hike in Lake Tahoe. I think this one is actually like the one to rule them. Aw Is Rubicon trail so rubicon trail starts at dl bliss. It's about another like nine mile round trip very similar so you basically we started using bliss. You're going to hike all the way down from because the Elvis is far above up on the cliffs above Lake Tahoe. You're going to hike down until you got to assure sure through all these like pine trees and granite with just stunning views. Because you're along the Tahoe shoreline but above it. So you're GonNa have all these beautiful views of Lake Tahoe the whole time. Then you're going to get all the way down there There's GonNa be like these meadows that you go through and then you're just gonNA hit a random Norwegian castle and you can get some ice cream there. Yeah which is a wonderful midway point to hike before they go back. There is a Norwegian castle in the middle of the hike. Yeah so it's called Vikings Home Castle which which I feel like if you're gonNA make a Norwegian castle and stick it in the middle of Lake Tahoe that's exactly what you should call it And it's located right along the shores of Emerald Bay. Why okay so so long story? Short rich people tracks. So there's this guy named Ben Holiday and that is his actual name And he decided to build the first summer home in Lake Tahoe. Way Back in the eighteen sixties. This.

We want some rocky granite cliffs which is a tongue twister solid these gorgeous views and then we started hitting these lakes like one. Oh I know we had lunch there and then we head back and it was perfect. "That hill for an hour and everyone's just gone and I have to call the front desk and there's like a guy on the Gondola right now to help Mauve. So you just like had self self-service I feel like I remember sending me panicked facebook messages so I sent you panic facebook messages while I was on the mountain but then I finally got service in the Gondola and I had like one bar our own Magadan so that was the time I almost died in Siberia. Yeah love that. You're so into snowboarding stories like this really makes me excited about how adventurous you are. And not at all the anxious for your safety so besides omens what is there to nothing less podcast over that was it. Because let me twice and I was better at it. In Lake Tahoe You can also go waterfall hopping. "Well come to the wild west podcast. Today I'm very excited to welcome. My Guest Troy Caldwell. Troy is a former pro skier. Who as a young man bought this incredible piece of property? The Lake Tahoe Mountains. It's right between squaw valley and Alpine meadows to of Tahoe's Premier Ski Resorts and for the past thirty years. Troy has has been planning and plotting about how to use the land to develop his dream backyard ski area and he calls the whole thing. White Wolf every riskier and Tahoe has heard of White Wolf. Troy is something of a local legend in the area. And he's been pushing this idea for three decades so people know about it but he only recently submitted submitted his big proposal of this project to Plaster County for review. And so after all this time of hearing about this thing people finally get to see see what troy actually wants to build. So here's the basic overview. It'd be a private ski area with two chairlifts thirty home units. What's this fifty thousand square foot lodge and then other amenities around like a tennis court and a warming hut and an ice skating rink and stuff like that? It's the kind of place that troy wants to live in. We decided coming from the ski industry and living in the ski industry and wanting to be involved with. Is it that We wanted it to something that we felt comfortable. Living with the really fun thing about White Wolf is that is key to this huge huge plan that squall Alpine the neighboring resorts have to build a Gondola through the mountains that connects the two resorts. So that Gondolo would need to have a mid station and the best place for that is troy's White Wolf property so once this happens it could effectively link these two big excuse resorts through Troy's property and opened up more terrain for skiers on the same lift ticket. Some people think that this kind of infrastructure development represents the future of Lake Tahoe ski industry. You got to open up more ski terrain between these big resorts and then effectively. You could create these. A Big Ski. Touring corridors kind of similar to what you see in the mountains of Europe. There's a lot to unpack your about. What's going on so the other day? I drove up to Troyes property property to hike around and get the whole lowdown on how this all might work so without further ado. Here's Troy Caldwell..

"Take you to the fun. They tell who swinging for decades Lake Lake Tahoe has been a backyard playground for many who live in the bay area. There's water sports and biking in the summer some superb hiking in spring and fall and my personal favorite skiing all winter long. If you dig through old advertisements you find not. Lake Tahoe was once a place that offered retreat for city dwellers looking to get away from the crowds. Check out this squaw valley commercial from the late Nineteen Eighty S. I love skiing for over fifty years but I hate ready line and in the whole world only squaw valley guarantees no waiting in.

And wait wondering why you were sitting in traffic, and they would say, you know, change required that pass or whatever. Snow tires news reporting. If you're going to Tahoe today, leave by noon, otherwise they were saying there's they have a group of windows. They're like if you are leaving x time don't bother like, you will not you can't get. Here's your next windowed actually leave for tile. But that's, you know, look, we need the water we need this. No, it's beautiful. It is. It's not just because it's great for skiing. It's because that's going to you know, water are fields the summer right now. It's all good. Yes. Is good news down on? I was extremely pleased that we had great vacation. But. Coming out of December and heading into January. Sometimes our weather turns off and get any more rain. And what we got an October. November is what we got bums me wasn't enough last year. Right. It was we had like a pretty good optimistic start to the season. And then it just turns up. Yeah. Anyway, so all the people who came to town for the big game. Well, that's I guess not the big game. But the college national championship. Yeah. They I guess at the beach for a minute. And then.

"Remember is it really in alignment from even to come up till like Tahoe to do this podcast the podcast from business point. That's an alignment. Okay. My passion about it. Absolutely. Yeah. I got that one. Right. Alignment my principle. Sure. Yeah. Maybe helping people. Okay, check, you know ahead. The say notice something else. I literally had something else scheduled this weekend. And I had to go back to them. So you know, what I'm sorry. That's not in alignment, right? Well, I think too. I think what what I love about a firm. No is that it almost makes us available to other yeses may not have ever seen. You know? I think that's right. It's not like you've got a list of five things which yes, I'm gonna say, right? Oftentimes, you say, no. And then all of a sudden the other thing that pops open. That's exactly right. Yeah. I mean, I think that's that's what of you know. I I love the idea that really we we we have to sort of close. Something off to make ourselves available to the next thing. And I think sometimes people get so caught up in again sort of this attachment to productivity just keep doing doing doing doing doing. And I think you know, they forget that if they if they have a firm. No, then they can have a stronger. Yes later, and I think that's so key and really making making yourself available. And I think I think so often people think that if they say, no, then sometimes just going to go down this people going to judge them. That's exactly right. And that goes back to the how people perceive so people have developed a codependence around. Saying yes. Yeah. And because they don't want to disappoint people. That's exactly right. And the real, you know, this is a great exercise. If you're listening to this, which if you're listening, then you're obviously listening. Is see how many knows you can collected. I don't say. Yes, anything. Yeah. Even if you know, it's the right thing just say, no get back to you. And then come back and say yes later, but semi knows you can collect would be hard for me. I know right. I'm just thinking about that. As you said that I was like, oh, oh, dear do I really have to do that. Yeah. Do it. And if you want to be really really challenged due for a week. Now think about that first of all you'd be tracking. How many times you're someone asks something of you, right? And you'd be like holy cow. Again. This is the sixteenth time today someone's asked something to me that I've had to say no to. And then more importantly, you're developing the muscle instead of just reacting with the yes, reacting with the with the codependence, or whatever that reaction wrestlers it changed that..

"You get in bed? Yeah, I try to read and it just sort of my mind wanders little bit. And and like you could say, well, you're relaxing yourself, and it's good to be relaxed, and that is a pop, perhaps a valid argument. But it sure feels like I have a whole lot more time when I don't drink at night. I do almost. Recently the summer jazz, our has turned into. Pushing the stroller around the Lake Tahoe wake. Yeah. And you know sometime not definitely not every time, but it's maybe once a week or something we'll we'll make cocktail and with us. And. Always on those evenings. You know if I had plans to do something else to get some things done outside or to Mark or whatever, you know they never happened. We end up just, you know, hanging out or watching a movie you. Yeah, and that might be good, especially if it's once a week or whatever the amount is that you deem appropriate because it's really good to not to have some amount of like not being productive because you truly just enjoying the company of someone else or relaxing. So I'm not saying that it's a bad thing. I just think it's valuable to know that and then I realized that it comes at a cost and might might benefit probably the answer is somewhere in the middle, not necessarily for drinks, but you know, in terms of things that help you relax versus things that keep you in your most productive state. In addition to that the morning also find that if I don't drink the night before, even if I'm, you know, I'm not not definitely not could be hung over for like two glasses of wine or whatever. It's from the night before, but. Much less likely to wake up on time to go for my. Winning run or to wake up, and you know, do some writing first thing in the morning or be productive in some way, get home. That's I don't even think of that. But just about any amount of alcohol, I feel like affects my sleep in some way or another, and you don't necessarily attributed up the next morning, but I do think that you know there's a little bit of minutes of lost productivity for sure. Yes, definitely. I love. I love me last one and the harder stuff as well. The serious drugs they can somehow speed and whatever else you can actually be more productive with that stuff. Yeah, actually tend to do my best work when I'm so that's one of our axes find that drug that really's beat you up. And then this is new. This is where do we do indoors. Really. I think I think anything that's up in any message with about, I think almost certainly comes at a cost and it will result in a crash. At some point, there's very little free lunches when it comes to energy, what about much? That's the new free thing, right? No crash. Is that right? Gotcha. Much agreeing t have been seeing some stuff about that recently. I don't believe it that energy came from somewhere. I agree. Maybe it was unlocked in your cells. It was locked up locked. It Cole. Yeah, I don't know. I mean, if macho I don't think has much in terms of caloric values, what's not giving you energy in that sense, it's been speeding your body up and even if you don't experience a crash later, there is adrenal fatigue and all that stuff that happens. And I, I don't know, also love coffee, but I don't pretend that energy doesn't get paid back late in the day by being slightly more tires. Do you do any of the mushroom stew. Talking about hard drugs. The mushroom coffee or tea? I don't. I think it might be good idea for different reasons. I think I think mushrooms are really good food, but I just would rather eat them. I just don't want them to my coffee. I don't know. We coke with a few times a week probably, and I think that's all right. But I think people do sit does that right? Is needed mushroom something. Yeah, I think so. Maybe I don't know. Yeah, I see people the thumper food guys do it. Oh, yeah, that's right. Maybe that's one I'm thinking. Have you have you done it? No, I haven't. Nowhere to get it. I guess you can get a hold. It sounds a lot like between about. You gotta talk to the guy at the end of the corner, mushroom guy..
