"Pests. You know, we haven't seen a disaster in the maple world for something like an emerald ash borer or chestnut blight that could wipe out all of the maple trees. But if that were to happen, some sort of invasive pest that would target Mabel's, that would be disastrous and so part of This study in this sort of new endeavor in the syrup world is to just makes him feel safe. So if any of that were to come to pass I'm John Donne Caskey and this is science Friday from W. N. Y C studios. And we're talking about alternative maple service within HPR reporter and he wrote Peak. I want to play a clip from your story Andy from Heidi experience, and she's 1/4 Street professor at the University of New Hampshire. The kind of remarkable that are sugar maples syrup industry has been so sustainable overall, considering that it's essentially relied on just this one single species, and it is kind of remarkable that the maple tree has been used in this way, basically by itself for such a long time. Yeah, It's a modern culture, you know, and monocultures are at risk for disruption. Like all of the issues that we just talked about, You know, I used to report in the Midwest in Indiana on things like corn and soybeans, which are You know, famous monocultures and they've all kinds of ecological ramifications. Things you need to do with proper tae shins and things like that kind of account for the fact that you're just growing one single species over huge areas, which is not how nature usually likes to operate, so You know, maple syrup is a little different. These air still natural forests, but they're managed to encourage maple production. That would be what we would call the Sugarbush. So plot of forest That's been maybe cold a little bit, too have mostly maples and not so much of everything else. Um and and you know, that just makes it more at risk of one big, maple centric disruption. And so some of the trees that they're looking at trying to get some of these niche syrups from are the kind that really like to grow in a sugar bush and are typically ignored or cut back and Researchers are interested in seeing whether that might want to change. All right. Well, this is the important question any none of this actually works if this stuff doesn't taste good. So what if some of these alternative serves taste like The great question, because I know that is the question on everyone's minds, eh? So some of them taste a lot like Naples, like, frankly, pretty indistinguishable from Mabel's Beach syrup, for example, tastes a lot like maple syrup. The little mile there, you know, it can be sort of lighter in color. But frankly, if you hadn't told me when I tasted it that it wasn't maple syrup, I wouldn't have known the difference. Birch syrup. On the other hand, which listeners in places like Alaska out West might be familiar with already. It's a little more common there because they don't have as many maple trees Birds. There was a lot different. It almost was like molasses or kind of a both saw Mickey like savory flavor. I thought it seemed like it would be better for cooking, and that was what the researcher I was talking to, said. He likes to do with it. He uses it in marinades on meat and fish. He puts it in cell addressing. He also said he likes to put it on his ice cream. Oh, these are all good options. I kinda want to try some of these. So how does the actual sugaring process work for these services is basically the same as making maple syrup. It's close, but just different enough to be really tricky. And that's what the study at the University of New Hampshire that I reported on is looking at. They want to know sort of one of the little tricks that are a little bit different from maple that will make people most successful when they try these other kinds of syrup. So some of these, for example, they don't like a metal bucket. They will pick up the flavor of metal. And so you're supposed to use plastic or they burn more easily than maple syrup, so they scorch at lower temperatures that would be friendly to Mabel. And you know the research. As I've been talking to say, if people are just trying this kind of as hobbyists or as a maple producer, just seeing what they could do with these extra trees. They might not think it works. They might think that these trees don't work for sugaring, which is not the case that you just have to kind of find, too, in the process. And know how to do it a little bit differently from maple syrup. The different processes temperatures times that will make them successful, which is what the UNH study is trying to do is kind of get some best practices together to help more people get into this. You think it's realistic that we could see any of these serves on the market like available for us at the breakfast table anytime soon. So they are on the market already, in really small sort of novelty quantities and the folks I've been talking to, so that's probably how it's gonna stay. It's a little more expensive to do these just because they do require some different equipment sometimes, and you know, it is completely in addition to any maple sugaring are already doing. But you know, you could see it maybe more readily available in Farmer's market or in fancy restaurants. And that kind of thing look like Any rope, peak reports on the climate, energy environment and sometimes pancakes for New Hampshire Public Radio's by degrees Project Any thanks so much for joining me. "To 1 to 4 to 27 or on Twitter, D A on CBS. Memorize. What do you think that we've always questioned Just how much Sean Payton really want to taste some under center. You think you showed his cards? Little bit that Maybe that was a little fake If he's loving up Jamis Winston so much, but I don't know that it's necessarily fake. Or just that we had a chance this year with no Teddy Bridgewater Taysom Hill played. The Saints won games. But I think we would all classify Tae Shin Hills audition as fine and the truth is with saints and the cash that they have around them and Drew Brees retiring. Fine, frankly, isn't gonna be good enough. They need a little bit of a higher ceiling, and I think Jamie's provides that now it's very boomer Boston. Jamie's could implode. But let's also not forget we're seeing the three hours of the Saints on the field every Sunday. Sean Payton is watching practice all week. He may have seen the improvements and Jamis Winston that we have no idea truthfully exist. I mean, James did come off the bench without a problem and throw a touchdown pass. First the box in the divisional round, he might have made true progress behind the season. That's what Sean Payton Sean Sean Payton understands It's higher ceiling. I would also argue with Drew Brees retiring If you do slide Taysom Hill over and let's not forget. Seed salary cap problems have been documented, and they could lose other pieces as well. But by by making your brazier full time quarterback you're actually now losing two guys because you're losing that important gadget piece that was so unique in this making use of hell the full time, yes, by mission making case until the full time quarterback you've now lost that piece of an offense, which was so unique and so different and lost Drew Brees, so it's actually like losing two players. Bye. Ironically, making Taysom Hill the full time quarterback, I think if you gave Sean Payton Jamis Winston for a full offseason, let's assume this offseason you could go through th is you can go through. Preseason workouts, etcetera. Trust that Sean Payton could get a lot out of Jamis Winston. Now I don't know if James is ever going to be perennial Pro Bowl guy, But I do think in that offense in a dome, Michael Thomas, Alvin Kamara, Sean Payton, scheming. I think she was when she could be a very good starting quarterback in the NFL. Maybe not great. Maybe at times maddening. But I think that if you gave him full time tutelage under Sean Payton, I think he'd be fine. What about you? I mean, yeah, and the idea that Jamie's Winston obviously kept like quarterback. The guy did lead the league in passing yards last year. So that's not a problem and having a good coach me on what the problem is, like, you said. Maddening. Can he not throw 40 interceptions in a season is the real question, So it for short, Peyton? It's not about how do you think you get the most out of out of James Winston? We know he could run an offense and we know we could air it out. We know he could put up points. The problems can he not implode his team with turnovers because he was the most turnover prone quarterback in the league, And if that's what Sean Payton could teach at him and tutelage of him, then, of course, he's gonna get a lot of Jamis Winston I wonder where Winston's street value is right now, because coming out of Tampa, it was obviously pretty low if he had to sign a one year deal with the Saints. Not that there was an other team that may have been interested, but it clearly wasn't like he was having multiple bidders, saying We want you to be the starting quarterback of he's taking a one year Let's see deal. In New Orleans to be the backup. There are the back up back up. So I wonder what the wonder what the street value was of Jamis went to the year ago versus a year later. My guess is His values probably higher this year. And that coaches and G M's feel you know what Jamis Winston Proved some type of maturity by not complaining, seemingly being a really good teammate last year. And pick it up the offense enoughto, whereas you said he had a couple of flashes when he filled in for breeze that one game when he came in the playoff game. My guess is this year, Wouldn't you say there's probably more G M's willing to give him a starting job than there was last year? I would assume so, especially because you never once heard a peep while James Winston was in New Orleans of any sort of problem or frustration about basically being the clip hold the clipboard holder and a unique one when Taysom Hill got the start, and he didn't When breeze came in, we very easily could've heard rumblings about how frustrated James was. None of that came out Jamie's apparently By all accounts was a great teammate. And really, that is the maturity that I think a lot of teams would look for. And there seems to be far more quarterback movement this offseason, then less offseason, a lot more unsure situations for a lot more on short team something when you combine those two things. It would have to be at least slightly more value in Jamis Winston this offseason. I expect, actually, if the Saints hold onto Jamis Winston will say, I mean, Jamis might have multiple bidders and Michael somewhere else, but if they hold onto Jamis. I think it's Zamora likely he's the starting quarterback and taste them goes back to his gadget roll. Now, I don't know if Hill would be very happy with that, considering He's kind of been banging the drum for being a starter, but I think it's more likely. Jameson, the starting quarterback week wonder they slide tased him into that. Gadgil. Wouldn't you say hard to argue that after a short Peyton's comments because Sean Payton doesn't have Jamieson the contract and has tasted mill under contract and could have just absolutely pumped up facing millions today?.

I have always said we would continue our fights. Um They will be a president Biden. There will be a vice president Harris. What do you need a term and long term expectations for the Republican Party after yesterday, man? Ladies be a serious a deep dive into how this happened right? Like so, uh, there's been all sorts of different rulers and reports that you know, there may have been an piece of folks next thing with Trump supporters and so on and so forth, and that they won't very be the truth right. But at the end of the day, Trump supporters were in that crowd that came into the capital. Uh, you know, in a way that was uncalled for. They broke windows They got in. Uh, I don't know who did Watch in. All of that stuff is gonna be figured out on Ben needs to be the full force of law and consequences. Uh, first for that. Our side does not fight with police officers and we do not envision violence. This was Atrocious what we saw at the U. S Capitol yesterday. The I think that Senator Cotton said it right when he came out and said That just like when he called in the National Guard but sending the troops in response to the riots this summer things past summer with B O M, uh Right. So we saw Hey said that you know the same kind of thing. You should happen here and we need the full force of law needs to be met with all of people that broke the law at the U. S Capitol yesterday. They are. In addition to that our movement needs to understand that this was a stake. It was a mistake for people. That went into the capital and did this now at the same time, there's a lot of people that didn't break the wall yesterday that were peacefully protest ng out there in Washington, but that they were at the Ellipse Caesar Freedom Plaza. In the past couple of days or whether they were at the outside the capital. And that's a savior right of Americans to peacefully protest in symbol there should be protected and cherished and praised and so But while breakers need to be held accountable, and what we saw on TV was a really bad image. Now, at the same time, while I think that people like Michael Steele, who's clip you just played are being disingenuous about senators, Holly and crews of the other senators who, uh, had said they were going to challenge the electoral college and I know that the Ultimate numbers of senators changed after they saw with the events of what happened with Frankly, let's call them what they were. It was a riot at the Capitol. That changed throughout the day. This effort was due to sail from the outset. If you look at the bright Barr reporting on this, you know he actually Google that regardless of the merits of whether or not you believe that there should be a challenge to the Electoral College, whether you believe Congress should be involved in that, and there's a lot of conservative think That Congress is not the place to settle Electoral college college challenges that the courts are in the states are that's what man called Louise? That's what Tom Cotton believes there are plenty of other senators on there's a good decent senators on the other side of this, like like careers, Holly, it's cetera. That being said they knew when they started this. They didn't have the votes to begin with. So you can't even have an argument about the methods of whether or not this is the right pathway. Teach Alan Judge I, um, election that there were clearly irregularities and and in fraud and all sorts of things that happened in November. Yes, well as of Wednesday, January, the sixth, the Austin area had a record. 656 Copan 19 patients hospitalized and this is because the ground the spike because Families have gotten together because of Thanksgiving, and then we're gonna see the next bite because of Christmas and New Year's. We knew this was coming. We weighed the options. It's not because we went to the restaurant. Let me give you some of the latest numbers. As of this morning, Patrick Osborne put this together for us. While coping hospitalizations have kept climbing this week. The past couple of days have seen a total rise a little bit more slowly. Right now. There are as of this morning 573 people hospitalized, which is an increase of four from a day ago. The big increase has been seen an active cases, which jumped by 515 this past day now 5616 active cases and all of Travis County. Have been 54,814 cases overall, but 48,633 total recoveries. Remember now and what do you think County. They have 146 fewer active cases. It's been reported by health authorities there, and right now the number stands that let's see 1817 overall. There you go. So 21,000 full recoveries in in in Williamson County, since all of this began, right? Yeah. 163 people hospitalized of Williamson County, which is five more than the day before, So there you go. Going to see this spike. And then I think we're going to see another decline. Hopefully, Ah, um or more steady on deeper decline. And then we got the vaccine that will kick in and I'll be back to a big, beautiful world, Todd and don show Hey, listen, I didn't like the way my water tasted at home. I resent that because we pay too much water for far too much for water here in Austin, Texas, So I decided to do something about it. Maybe call the Pentair water solutions, and they came to my home and analyze what's going on with it, And they got some pretty high tech stuff that they do, and they show you exactly everything that's in the water, all the chemicals, all the minerals. A little bit too much chlorine. That's when we get that chemical Tae shin chemical smell over a period of many years. That can really not be good for your health show. Go with a pinch air water system because that will get rid of the bad stuff in the water and give you better water from every single faucet in your home. You're gonna love the way your water tastes from every faucet in the home is gonna be better for you, and it's going to taste much, much better..

"You get hot and Ukraine crowd and you push back on them and you tell them they're not welcome anymore. Are you wept? Where is the source for this violence? Where is the normalization of it Politically? That was three years ago. That was Maxine Waters, establishment Democrat from California. Telling her audience her supporters to harass publicly any member of the Trump administration. I can't think One Republican did that. But it's Rhino territory when they say That conservative supporters. Of the president should be Mm. Dealt with this is video cut one. Michael Steele, formerly of the RNC, talking about those senators who supported the question. The president raised about the last election. Pick up one. We should show that list every day, and we should remind the American people that these are the individuals who caused yesterday to happen. Josh that now infamous photo of Josh Holly with his fist race saluting the crowd, baby, This is on you. You had a hand in what happened yesterday in the capital. You may wear the lapel pin of the United States Congressman, but you'd know better than a thud right now. No better than a thug. I know somebody who will have some clear sighted analysis of the political ramifications of yesterday's event because he is Washington political editor for the most influential conservative website. There is his name is Matthew Boyle on that website is Brian barr dot com. Happy New Year Mad Boyle Dr Gorka. It's always a pleasure. Thanks for having me happy. New Year to you too, sir. So expect Tae shins. The President's office. The president made a statement through his assistant, Dan Scavino 11 hours ago. Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out. Nevertheless, there will be an orderly transition on January the 20th. I have always said we would continue our fights. Um They will be a president Biden. There will be a vice president Harris. What do you need a term and long term expectations for the Republican Party after yesterday, man? Disease be a serious a deep dive into how this happened right? Like so, uh, there's been all sorts of different rumors and reports that you know there may have been in teeth of folks. Next thing was Trump supporters and so on and so forth, And that may well, very be the truth right. The I think that Senator Cotton said it right when he came out and said That just like when he called in the National Guard but sending the troops in response to the riots this summer things past summer with the BLM, Uh Right. So we saw Hey said that you know the same kind of thing. You should happen here and we need the full force of law needs to be met with we all people that broke the law at the U. S Capitol yesterday. No matter they are. In addition to that our movement needs to understand that this was a stake. It was a mistake for people. That went into the capital and did this now at the same time, there's a lot of people that didn't break the wall yesterday that we were peacefully protest ng out there in Washington, but that they were at the Ellipse, Cesar's Freedom Plaza. In the past couple of days or whether they were at the outside the capital. And that's a savior right of Americans to peacefully protest in symbol there should be protected and cherished and praised and so But while breakers need to be held accountable, and what we saw on TV was a really bad image. Now, at the same time, while I think that people like Michael Steele, who's clip you just played are being disingenuous about senators Holly Cruise of the other senators, who, uh, had said they were going to challenge the electoral college and I know that the Ultimate numbers of senators changed after they saw the events of what happened with Frankly, let's call them what they were. It was a riot at the Capitol. That changed throughout the day. This effort was due to sail from the outset. If you look at the bright Barr reporting on this, you know he actually we do that, regardless of the merits of whether or not you believe that there should be a challenge to the Electoral College or whether you believe Congress should be involved in that, and there's a lot of conservative think. That Congress is not the place to shed Electoral college college challenges that the courts are in the states are. That's what Rand Paul believes. That's what Tom Cotton believes there are plenty of other senators on there's a good decent senators on the other side of this like like Cruz Holly. It's that being said. They knew when they started this. They didn't have the votes to begin with. So you can't even have an argument about the methods of whether or not this is the right pathway T O challenge. I, um, election that there were clearly irregularities and and in fraud and all sorts of things that happened in November. This is not the avenue for that because you don't even have the votes to begin with. You can have that argument about the merits on this until if you don't have the votes, and they never had the votes. They never had a chance to have the votes because the Democrats control the House of Representatives, and you saw that happen. Last night when the House of Representatives dismissed of the two states that there was senator joining House members on the challenge that was Arizona, Pennsylvania. We're going to do more, but then after the incident earlier in the day that forced Congress to take a recess until later in the evening and re begin the proceedings They called off challenges to Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin. So on and so forth, But the point here is is that they never had the votes to begin with. S so it was always a process that was doomed to fail. And because of that, the senators who did this, you know the I think they're going to face a lot of criticism that I think they're check Crew's gonna face a lot of prisons. Criticism for this. I think that Josh Holly is too now again. There are also people in the political establishment or anti Trump or anti conservatives like you, Michael Steele that you played there like people on the Democrat side of the aisle. Who are jumping at the opportunity here to try to demolish what it is is the president stands for And his police Now at the end of the day, I do also believe that everything that the president has brought to.
