"The fan Laurie Rubin said here with you got about another half hour then JJ comes your way you have questions questions are I see it on Twitter we're gonna get to some of these answers one is Carson Wentz injury prone that's a question on there was it a cheap shot the he David Clowney hit to the head was that a cheap shot of this since the end of that game was that offense of pass interference is that a blown call and then in terms of the giants in the head coaching situation who's the right candidate who makes the most sense what's the right choice where should the giants turn all of those you have questions we have answers eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six I'm gonna get into the giants coaching search in a moment I would also look ahead to next weekend and who you got which gives you most excited about and dialed in on so just a half an hour what's the do well said the phone first Jack on the Upper West Side with one on Jack Hey Lori happy new year new year to you too Jack always a pleasure to hear from you well you know I'm a you know a big baseball guy but it's only because our football team too been so hard to watch so long I I go back to Tarkington and Ron Johnson in Tucker credited so so you know but with major harder for me to be a football football fan otherwise and you know quickly decide with their cannery in Metcalf how those guys got so deep in the second round Johnny but but the the thing that you know I I'm I'm a dad with two kids and I played football and successfully and you know was a running back on the and scored a lot of questions so you know I know the house wanted used to run somebody over and I do say so I can have the you know you know I use my head you know to knock people down you know I mean I put my head right in there and you know was a physical advantage of times in and so with with with your heart issues on a great playoff weekend because there's some really fun games to watch great performances but what you know even yesterday there was a play in the fourth quarter where the buffalo quarterback went to the sideline and he took a fishing helmet shot right to the face really we know nobody even blink it was even mentioned by the announcers and and for me the fan I I I watch I can tell you how often you see routinely the helmet is used as a weapon in the sport and it is an instance it is as you point out with other quality areas refereeing it's so arbitrary about when it is interpreted as a as a hedge and I understand the whole idea of what of the person being a runner I was really impressed by Seattle writer you know Colin I'm saying that because you know it was kind of your yeah you got a clear going to ground come behind yeah thank god then on your head and you know I love I love sports a little contact the littlest us back and once you guys get their head scrambled and Anna and I want to still see it impact the game and at you know if they called the head shot on the bustle quarterbacks great Josh down that would be the first down any negatives they can easily that what about a first down to put them in for a position with the game on the line so who is very arbitrary but but it does trouble me seen these guys get whacked in the face by somebody charging you know like a bullet like a missile and it's sometimes it's it's it's it's so quick the they call it like a fraction I'm sorry that contracts yeah I I I I thought the Jack in thank you and thanks for the call is I agree with that I thought that the Seattle writer that we had on from the from the times I thought that Greg bell did do a really nice job from the Tacoma Tacoma Tribune did do a really nice job talking about that because you would expect that somebody from the local paper would be a little bit of a Homer sometimes and might have a tendency to say I don't think today beyond Clowney I don't think that was a late hit I don't think that were you know shouldn't be penalized or something like that and here's somebody who covers the team and he said quite the opposite you know his point was that make Google was already in there making the hit on once and that would have been sufficient to get went down to the ground and there was JB incline Clowney coming in late it was a late hit and it was a hit to the head now I agree with Greg bell I don't think it's hard to look into someone else's soul and say is something intentional or not but the speed of a football game when you watch something in real time is there an intent to hit someone in the head head to head your helmet to helmet and knock somebody out not somebody out of a game I don't think that that play elevated to that and I agree with Greg bell the writer had on earlier about that as well so I don't it's not something where I would've been kicking JVM Clowney out of a football game but it should have been penalized it was a very obviously it hit when you saw it happen at or an aunt and a helmet to helmet play when you saw what happened it should have been a penalty and then I what I do expect though is the JVM Clowney should expect a very I believe a large fine from the NFL and he's going to get a big fine for that play and I certainly hope really hope that Carson Wentz is okay you know taken away from that game and Hey are potentially whether that was brought to the hospital his wife asks it yeah we're we're seeing Fabio his wife fast to your escorted down to the locker room whatever it is but that he was really struggling and then you know you just hope that he is okay and and if the question is Carson Wentz injury prone you know what early in Matthew Stafford's career there was the whole label of he's injury prone and then we watched a period after those first couple seasons where Matthew Stafford was quite durable until the season and year after year and snap after snap an injury in it didn't matter if he was hurt and he played through it and he had a really nice long durable section of his career and I hope for Carson Wentz for his sake that he will get to that this year he was in there he played the whole season and he finally gets to start his first playoff game his fourth year in the league and that he was knocked out second series of the game I would not call the hit on Sunday something that I would label as injury prime that is something that could happen to to anyone now once may need to learn to slide feet first more often and and you can say maybe he's more reckless as a runner and needs to watch that that that might be fair but I don't think that that a late hit that you can expect to have a late hit to the head so that to me I'm not prepared to say is is injury prone what happened on Sunday few carts and once let's go do Tony online with foreign Tony Hey what's going on great you you're on one Erica not that you'll still great job thank you I really really appreciate that what you want to talk about tonight well I was gonna wonder what you think about like the whole change in the NFL like looks like we're going to Maryland and the art of reading about Brady in college I couldn't our situation where they may be added to our second they put our which you can on that well I think we just said terra so then on from The Boston Globe in her opinion which all deferred to because she's she's there and covering in Boston is that what she's not willing to guarantee it her best guess is the next season Brady and Belichick will both be back with the patriots and that they'll be there and and doing it again for another year that in terms of legacy for for Brady as well at you and just going out to play for another team in another fan base as well as in the case of the patriots and their reputation to they really want that to happen with the greatest player in franchise history and there's enough reasons to say that they will be back together but the other part of your question Tony that I think is interesting is are we seeing a changing of the guard and and that's something I've been thinking about and was thinking about all days but I either this weekend to watch Brady and even if he is still has some more left in the tank and to watch true breeze who yes yeah he played well in December but to it you know what we can have the double standard and and if we're gonna hold the Kirk cousins and say oh he doesn't play well in in the big game and then turn around on on Sunday and watch for cousins thoroughly out play drew Brees in a big game right at you know you never know at the time the you see it you don't always know was this the end was this the changing of the guard hi and all I have a feeling that we that it is and also you are manning has not only as a quarterbacks is yes rivers and and Ben Roethlisberger they all came into the league together and Roethlisberger yeah sure maybe he's yeah I think his intent is to be back and and playing next season starting for the Steelers again yet he obviously had a pretty serious injury it missed the season this year and and Philip rivers his his play really plummeted this year he was not that good for for the San Diego Chargers are they is that a team is river still with them in the off season or is there a pretty decent chance that San Diego are one of the teams that traffic quarterback in the first round in high in the first round this coming this coming draft so it is really interesting and I actually do think Tony that we're gonna look back on this season and say this is one thing right the trend toward his new work of running stock or boxes I leave him vulnerable I mean I I think that sounds like we've been or and I know they keep family this is the new style but I team can really build stuff when I'm running quarterback we sold like Michael's eighteen even are some of the quarterback here's the thing is inseparable been injury yeah right like RG three was probably you know what is the one of the better examples of a guy who just was susceptible to injury because of the running when I think about that and and thanks for the call Tony is that I think some of these young quarterbacks half to emulate.

"Com he favored us and if you have like in a lex or Google home you simply say play WFAN boom you're all set up all right great stuff out of Greg bell from the Tacoma Tribune Wes those was cut was point people they're good I think they're smart he reference this here's a quote from the referee on the play where Carson Wentz was injured and referee Shawn Smith his quote about that hit he said of course and once he was a runner and he did not give himself up we saw incidental helmet contents contact and in our judgment we didn't rule that to be a foul I agree with Greg bell I call in about should have been a penalty but that doesn't bring Carson Wentz back into the game and so one penalty one foul on that play isn't going to have had a massive impact on this football game I do think the JVM Clowney should expect a pretty hefty fine the severity of that of the hit and the injury I think going to lead to a pretty big fine and so we'll say but expect that to come this week alright we'll head back to the phones and Kevin in tandem with trying to have our door Lori I'm doing well Kevin what do you got for me we don't want a little twelve this phrase game at the end it was a blatant push all of I don't know what the referees I was like that you know they've missed a great respect call I was like that I just go back to the free sprint because every year to repair getting one plate short I don't think I don't really feel that badly for saying fans in the sense that last year I I feel badly that they got job last year with the call the didn't go their way and this is another bad one so yes I feel bad I suppose to some extent by number one first of all they threw such eighty eight a hissy fit last year that it's because of the saints fans that were stuck with these stupid it it you know the stupid rule that theoretically you can challenge and review offense of in defensive pass interference because of them that we have this stupid rule and then it's because of NFL officiating then it seems to have had I don't know second thoughts about the rule like they don't like it even though they created it and now they're wishy washy all season long and they don't call it if you don't want to have this rules and don't have it but today's end of game with the saints there was exactly why we have this rule and it to me is it it's unforgivable that you don't sit and review that play if you want to decide that that's not often to pass interference after thoroughly reviewing it well I guess that's on you but you have to review it I thought Kevin that was offense of pass interference you know you see the arm of Kyle Rudolph fully push off against the B. is simply push off and you see the defender's head even kind of go backwards on the play he created space and separation all right I don't know but the Titans game all man I love the person I only the patriots so but I I thought the play that Titans coach rebel troops rock would be which only needs to come off the clock it was yeah he he he basically pulls a ballot checking and yeah and did the delay of game stuff and then personally I would like to celebrate new like I won the lottery that are out there was you know what it was it really was and is a so called him look it was a lot of fun and and then the other thing that has to be mentioned and that game is Derrick Henry and you know just the the job he did run in the ball and running it down the throat of that patriots team and you I understand that Dave Gelman wants to say say crown Barkley you know a gold jacket guy are hall of Famer and touched by god all the things that they the gentleman said about sick one Barkley when his drafting him but you look around the league and there certainly are a number of other backs well that first McCaffrey or a guy like Derrick Henry that you look at and say yeah there are number of elite backs and Derrick Henry has to be right up at the top of that list in a guy who come playoff time is so physical the it not just is gonna bust a long run but get to that short yardage gets you those tough yards those yards you have to have those goal line carries all of that he is a man and and sometimes it's like a man among boys out there that's for sure let's go to about David in Jacksonville what's going on in Jacksonville Florida data hello Laurie hi David what do you have for being crazy sure I hate it I use the list and I was with my mom most beautiful girlfriend and check for the morning hours clay Travis with that name and I thought he was the head and I just put you on now and I thought you are unbelievable all right well thank you I appreciate that you want to talk a little football well I want to talk about WFAN all right now I'm a little nervous because if you want to move with your husband to another country or another state mold because WFAN is very very lucky that the all right well thank you David I appreciate that I'm sorry that I and it's very very kind of you to say that but yeah sure people want to talk about the game so we're gonna go back to that let's go to Joe in Brooklyn Hey Joe how are yeah Hey Lori how are you I'm doing well gel even talk about okay so just a few things first off does Roger Goodell watch these games sometimes it doesn't feel like he does does it well because after what happened last year to the Saint for this to happen and I understand they were driving do they score in that situation more likely than not but you know and and all sorts of pass interference in that situation the ball back ten yards they just got robbed the prior year the whole reason for instituting the new rule was because of the game that they participated in and this happens again let me read for you and then your comment is here was the statement by the way haven't read this yet to our listeners here's a statement from al river on who is the head of officials in your his statement about that last play was there is contact by both players but none of that contact rises to the level of a foul that is consistent with what we've done all year long we left the ruling on the field we let it stand here's my problem with it Joe is I happen to think it was offensive pass interference but whether you thought so or not what I don't understand is I thought the whole point of us going through this all year long garbage and what exactly was for exactly the situation that it's the last play the game the last two minutes of a game or that it's over time and that there is a a scoring play that were not being scenario that we're not sure about and don't you have to do don't you have to take an extra thirty seconds to say blow the whistle let's stop at first second we're gonna do a booth review were or we're going to go back to your could do or if you were really get a look at this play and dissect it and you know what if in watching it in real time speed or whatever they've deemed they said you know what it's worth saying it's it's both players and we don't think so then they at least it was almost like there was a crime committed and they decided not to have a jury of your peers they just let it all it's okay with no crime okay but given at least a trial considering what goes on in this league when it comes to concussions and all of these different things that it seems that the lease complicit in and covering up for them not I you know it at the end of the day the game doesn't exist without the sands watching the game and to not give them that respect like I'm I'm a fan of neither team but it seems like you know especially coming off of last year but they've been doing all year long they haven't been overturning calls especially on the coach's challenge and yeah I agree but that's the part where they'll say that they've been consistent with what we've done all year long and thanks for the call Joe which is on some level shirking their duty about it but then if you are not going to be over calling overturning plays then why do we get the role in the first place because I think this one did rise to the level that you could have overturned it so I actually thought it was offensive pass interference yes there was a level of contact but from both players but then one player did take his arm extended fully and shove the other player back so much so that the defender's head goes backwards a little bit on the play and increase the space to make that catch so to me that rises to a level of offensive pass interference but I understand if what they're saying was it wasn't enough to overturn a call and we're going to let it stand whatever was called in real time on the field if that's what they wanted okay but you really have to take a moment and look at it don't you otherwise if you're just going to default to it and say we're gonna go is the ruling on the field and let that stand the why do we have the rule in the first place why do we have it just to get under the nails and the and the skin and everything of NFL France and and and drive us all insane is that what the rules about and then we're wasting our time S. is is completely stupid let's go to Gary in Brooklyn with one I'm Gerri hello Laurie hi Gerry are you doing great so I just couldn't help feeling deja vu during this patriots game when I dropped that brand yeah all I could think about at that moment was Wes Welker and and you know the the against the giants yeah I know absolutely and we really yeah and catch the ball yeah this is really an early something weird is happening here yeah I had that same conversation this morning my nephew and I talk every every Sunday morning have our sports conversation and we brought UP I brought the same thing that was the first thing I thought of when that ball was dropped second in six and honestly the Welker throw wasn't you know the Welker catch was a lot harder than this one this one hit is that a Julian element right in the hands and if he is that football and it was in his stomach in the gut if he catches that football their first down around midfield who's to say and they don't go on and kick a field goal and we're having a completely different conversation about the patriots that I meant to be I don't read back like you said right in there right in there to get the replays like powers of possible yeah this happening in I would love to hear yours also anything she probably didn't cut whatever you know thank you from what I gather as far as the edges of somebody posted I would love to give credit I io want you know some one of the beat writers who covers said that they saw the image might even want to be fair minded in one of the ESPN TV you guys said they there was an image leaving the stadium of Tom Brady carrying one of his children and Giselle walking next to him and it just it it was a very sweet thing walking off so I don't think that at this point I think she's always her lesson I think she's commenting and certainly by the Brady one enough with Julian Edelman and they want to Superbowl you know we just last year so I don't think she's commenting on that all right and Jim I see you gonna grab a quick break and when we come back I'm gonna have a guest this time we are where to go in and have a conversation I had a Seahawks yes on now we're gonna have a the the Vikings guest on and dive into that game a little bit so that's coming up after the update twelve twenty time for an update Harris.

"The fan Laurie Rubinson here with you and Seahawks get a big win anyone in the playoffs is big seventeen for nine over the Philadelphia Eagles to break it down we bring in Greg bell of the Tacoma Tribune Hey Greg how are yeah Lori I'm well hello New York thanks for stopping by New York to me there's obviously is a few big stories and jump off the page for here but before we turn to you know whether there's a G. Davey on clammy hit or any of that one of the big stories here to me is how did every team pass a D. K. Metcalf at you a six foot three Marvel who won the combine and yet how do you last until the last pick of the second round well Lori had a cervical neck fracture in October two thousand eighteen at Ole miss and it is college career half the season early a lot of people around him said he probably should never play football again he was in a hospital bed in Oxford Mississippi with a neck brace on security may never play football and that scared a lot of teams who didn't medically cleared him work felt they were medical red flags he had broken a foot earlier he had a medical redshirt year before that old mess and then there are a lot of an insult personnel types who thought he was a one hit wonder who just wrote who just ran go route and that's all he could do and was a one trick guy that couldn't play in an NFL route tree and play against different coverages in the league what they over looked first the six four two twenty nine for the for three forty and there's no there's no defense of backing up felt that it was here today the second thing they overlooked was the Mississippi is that the Seahawks scalps told us Mississippi's offense was just too simple for him they did not have to do any more than nine routes go routes down the field and beat a guy says Eckley one on one and had Mississippi schemes ask them to do more Metcalf would have shown more and the Seahawks will take you very much out will trade up here to the second round and get a specimen that no one in the league can cover man to man the eagles tonight DOT themselves are kicked out of the playoffs like sticking a man to man defense which they have all season and nobody could guard myself when I want at what point did the sea hawks sense that they had a special player on their hands they say Lori with I mean we share trying to say with a side of the first mini camp they were shocked in may about how polished around receiver he was because they said they didn't see him do that all matters but they saw him catching the ball away from his body making sharp cuts doing things that maybe is four five year veteran in the NFL would do against different type of coverage of the Seahawks cornerback for talking about way back in mini camp about how this guy runs different routes everyday you've got a book on us already and he's only a week into the league they didn't see any of that calling me the rest of the NFL is for you guys and said that the last that long but they got way more Pete Carroll said after the first year we can't we got more than we bargained for not not we didn't know it was this minister of our product on top of this physical skill Greg bell about the Seattle Seahawks and their win today against the eagles and another big story out easily added this game in recently with the Seahawks is the return of of beast mode and I you know certainly the eagles and all their injuries was yeah we've rarely seen a team have to play with the eagles and a credit to them the with all the injuries they had but certainly Seattle had moved more than their fair share of injuries as well what has the return of beast mode and Marshawn Lynch coming back to the team Mentat has have you noticed the difference around the team absolutely but boy first he would not be here to see our time lost their POP three running he's learning entry it took that extreme of an occurrence for them to call him they lost Chris cars and it's twelve hundred yard rusher after eleven hundred yards in the last year and a loss for sharpening their first round pick in two thousand eighteen and they lost CJ prosafe third down back they were trying if you ever down back after the other two injuries and then it's okay we'll do all we have is Travis Homer Ricky six round picks from Miami but call of Marcia lance look you have to look beyond the numbers of what which is given him right now he said touchdowns in each of the first two games yes but it's been five and how he carried himself in a locker room in on the field there are guys only five Seahawks who played with Lynch in the Superbowl years through the last season he had played with in two thousand fifteen the rest of them forty eight guys in the on the roster are incomplete obvious and they watch everything he does on the field in the locker room in the parking lot is and tonight I let my game story was led by the mansion Metcalf I thought there dole plays in the third quarter change the game let's first of all the touchdown run vintage Lynch jumped at the three yard line and the three eagles bounces off all three of them both through for a touchdown electrified the sideline then in the third quarter catches us up a little out route on in one goes down the sidelines instead farms for defensive back into the turf like a lawn dart went straight into the ground right in front of Caroline the Seahawks bench they explode again tapping on the helmet of typical Marshawn Lynch play two plays later Metcalf makes a diving catch nobody touches the murals sprints in one motion I could Jim as he runs into the touch down seventeen six games pretty much over that's what Lance done and so look at the numbers seven yards for six or seven he must not have been it's the energy the reference the player's health forum the encouragement of things like last week in the San Francisco game when he was encouraging Travis Homer saying that the review was inspiring him without hardy was one and a twenty one year old kid will be telling his grandparents about March on what's coming up to this first start it's those kind of intangibles that can make a difference in playoff games and when they go to Green Bay they're gonna be glad they have Marshawn Lynch on the sidelines expecting that he knows the Seahawks can frequently be criticized for the conservative nature of the play calling often to play college especially when Russell Wilson very clearly the best player on the team one of the best players in the league and throughout the course of the season as you were saying all those running backs they they tend to be more of a more conservative a run first scheme and yet here we are Brian Schottenheimer offensive coordinator very familiar to this market be a former offense of coordinator with the jets and yet I I thought you cited one of them which is thirty one I don't think anybody thought that they would it seem like any time beast mode anytime Marshawn Lynch isn't lunch Marshawn Lynch's in the game they're probably running the ball rate and not throwing him because he hasn't been around so that was one call and then the other that surprise me in terms of the in the Seahawks right now and where they're at I don't know if you were surprised but at the end of the game there thirteen ten and it was thirty ten at the Seattle Levin there's a minute forty seven left in this game and Seattle could be kept running the ball and you've got a forty year old backup quarterback on the other side and taking your chances and and punt it away and instead they go for the win and Russell Wilson heaving the ball up in the air to Metcalf for thirty six yard of completion that to me was a little bit of a surprise and I thought OK Gress of it you know and and and aggressive call were you surprised at all but by those calls are are what five it raised my brow a little bit but then I saw right before the snap the eagles are in zero coverage no deep safety yeah man to man coverage like they had had the whole night and it was what Schottenheimer counted on each on on the eagles thinking well they're going to run the ball because take our third time out on defense and pointed out of their own ends of but the Seahawks did not they were confident their defense is going to stop my account even though he's forty and played on sixty four teams and was born in nineteen thirty they were they had been moved on the entire night both by the run in the past and I don't think they want to give the ball at midfield to my account it was a one score game and that's with no seven three nine correctly so they went for the win right there and they said look you're going to play man coverage again you're probably not going to have a single high safety which they didn't try to get somebody on your team or in the state of Pennsylvania who can guard became Metcalf won one game on the line and they didn't have anybody they have never had anyone in team history nobody in the NFL the can guard him in the single one on one situation so we run the go route passed the guy's covering the jumps over the safety Wilson setting probably could've thrown a touchdown pass there but he knew that casket I'll jump anybody on the field so we just threw it up there so he could tend to get the first down and win the game you're right it did the trend of or the perception that Schottenheimer's too conservative couple things on that the law one they they run the ball so much because our our sense of light cannot pass block down into down out they have to help pass rush used to play I'm honestly that have to read runner past the start the games that they falling behind and have to throw Russell Wilson been almost killed so they have to run the ball to set up the it's cliche but that's how they have to do it for other often blinds instructed and the other thing you can criticize the Carolinas he still plays the game field position realign your defense as if he has his defense from a Super Bowl years in the legion of boom while he does and the defense gets him in trouble sometimes with miss tackles with lacking a pass rush we saw some tonight even though they ended up with seven sacks I thought a lot of it was because my account of holding on to the ball so long as they can be beaten if you give cornerbacks time to throw because they have coverage issues in the secondary and they have tackling the issue so we you can definitely criticize Carol for playing your run conservative game field position game with the defense is not nearly the checked into a quality used to be talking to Greg bell.
