"Well before the collapse as it was starting was like whoa. I can look right down to my right. And it's like looking into the water that collapsed though was not instant. The bridge been closed to traffic as soon as officials realized. Just how extreme and unsafe. The situation was from the beginning of the failure conditions to the actual collapse that took between forty five and sixty minutes so there was enough time for several different people to get their cameras out. And get footage of the whole thing. Finally reaching its crescendo of movement and collapsing at eleven. Am a large section of the bridge fell included concrete and steel girders. That had been part of the center deck and the rest of the center span fell right after it. The main cables went slack and the towers leaned away from each other and toward the side of the river. The bridge at that point was just gone on a bit of a sad note. There was only one fatality that day. It was not a person but a dog. That dog named tubby was the pet of a man named leonard coats. Worth and coats. Worth was a reporter working for the tacoma news tribune at the time and he had to leave the car on the bridge. Crawl to a safe spot. He later described this ordeal. Just as i drove past the towers the bridge began to sway violently from side to side before i realized that the tilt became so violent that i lost control of the car. I jammed on the brakes and got out only to be thrown onto my face against the curb around me. I could hear concrete cracking. I started to get my dog tubby but was thrown again before it could reach the car. The car itself began to slide from side to side of the roadway on hands and knees. Most of the time. I crawled five hundred yards or more to the towers. My breath was coming in. Gasps my knees were raw reading my hands bruised and swollen from gripping the concrete curb toward the last i risked rising to my feet and running a few yards at a time safely. Back at the toll plaza. I saw the bridge in its final collapse and saw my car plunged into the narrows incidentally far carson had attempted to rescue this dog when the bridges motion eased for a brief period but the dog obviously frightened bit him. He wasn't able to get it from the car before needing to get back off of the bridge himself. Yeah fargo santa is another person who took footage that day You can actually there's footage of him walking back from trying to save the dog and you can say kinda cradling his arm that has been bitten. We're going to take a quick sponsor break and when we come back we will talk about what happened after the bridge collapsed. When general motors says that they aim to put everyone in an electric vehicle. They mean everyone. There is a whole new generation of people who will soon plug in their vehicles as naturally as they charge their phones who will choose to omit optimism not exhaust..

"But on the other assessment by the reconstruction finance corporation determined that the tolls that the bridge would collect. We're just not going to recoup the loan amount in any kind of worthwhile timeframe. The application was temporarily withdrawn for reworking. And in the meantime the state governor had allocated seven hundred thousand dollars for the project and the law that had initially not granted county's jurisdiction over bridge building was amended to include that capability chandler's company once again submitted the loan application. But this time he went to the newly established public works administration and the hope that some of the funding would be from grants rather than this entire thing coming as a alone but this plan did not work. The application was denied citing the fact that quote the funds of the public works administration are now practically depleted and further. The state of washington has already shared liberally in these funds. It did not help that. The pwa could plainly see that the tacoma narrows bridge company had been set up to sidestep that law regarding loon sizes and the whole thing made chandler seem really really shady additionally the pwa felt that the numbers in his loan application were way off. It seemed like the estimates for toll revenue were higher than was really realistic and that the estimated cost of the construction was lower than it should have been so at this point. It seemed like the bridge was back to square one when the state minimized chandler's role and created the washington toll bridge authority in one thousand nine hundred eighty seven. It helped this project finally gained traction with the pwa. Incidentally chandler later sued the wta. For money he believed he was owed for quote preparation of estimates surveys maps and other items which he prepared prior to nineteen thirty six in connection with the then proposed construction of a toll bridge across that portion of puget. Sound known as the tacoma narrows that case was dismissed in nineteen forty-three in creating the washington toll bridge authority. The state had been really really careful and deliberate. Nothing had been rushed and the w. t. b. was modeled after other organizations in places that had been able to get. Pwa funding by meeting all of their very specific requirements including the california group that had obtained capital for the construction of the golden gate bridge. Ultimately the funding came through as roughly half as a pwa grant in the remaining amount as a loan from the reconstruction finance corporation. Although this meh more than six million dollars had been secured. The bridges budget had to be really carefully managed in the years after collapse. There was a lot of scrutiny into how that money had been spent and if any of the budget based decision had led to the bridges failure. We're gonna come right back and talk about the firm that was hired to design the bridge. Am some early indications that something was wrong but first we will take a quick sponsor. Break running with your earbuds in it sucks. You're.

"The twenty one the already pro off road package looks bad ass. It's got the cool grayish colorado and the big tires and and features you'd expect another plugging one ten plug in a back and and whatnot. But i'm not a big off roader so my thoughts and opinions of it are are going to be just based on my experience of course in the city funds it around with the different modes and and doing whatever but i know that the tacoma has been the number one right. It's been such a huge fan base. It's been the go-to mid size truck for so long. Specially in off roading. If you're not getting a jeep or getting a tacoma. It seems like and i didn't get a chance to take it off road so i don't know how it functions in that regard. I imagine very well right. That's it's so popular. But i'll tell you i wasn't that impressed with this thing around town I thought the throttle lagged a little bit. I thought the transmission was always confused. It didn't seem to find. The right gear is as a result of that. It felt kind of lazy off the line. It just felt like. I had to give it a lot of throttled to get that thing to move like it was and then when you floored it felt like it was getting quick but you know i don't know it's just sort of like that low and mid range power just didn't seem like it was there was kind of interesting and the the interior. Although good didn't seem great i understand. It's got a lot of plastic and soft touch materials. Things that are easy to clean. Hit it with a shop vac. What wiping down especially this. Trt pro with the big the big rubber floor mats. You take him out you. Hose him down. I get the functionality of that portion of it but overall i wasn't like super impressed with it. So i put it out there on social media and a lot of people were were responding going. Yes a common thing is a gear. Change to get more of that low end acceleration. Maybe better off road as well. That seemed interesting to me. Seemed like a pricey fix but certainly one way to go I don't know and shouldn't have to be done on a brady vehicle. That's for sure. Yeah i was just kind of thinking that you know and You know two hundred seventy eight horsepower. Two hundred sixty five pound feet of torque. I think the testing is like mid seven zero to sixty. So i mean that's not. It's not slow. I mean a lot of things seem to be in the sixes these days so maybe i was expecting something a little bit better. You know the price point. I want to say starts in the low thirties and works. Its way up to maybe the mid forties i think. Trt pro with all the options is fifty thousand. Four hundred forty five thousand forty five forty five something so i think it's i mean if you get the base model two wheel drive sort of the the the little the little workhorse version. The sr less than thirty grants twenty seven and a half grand. And then there's an sr five and a sport and the hardy off-road about thirty five gran limited. It's about forty thousand trt pros about forty five thousand in that range. But what's interesting is. The nissan frontier hasn't been particularly popular a mid size trucks. Small truck but here nissan just comes out with a completely face lifted version of this thing more than a facelift. So i say faceless. Because it's essentially the same chassis but the chassis has evolved over the years so when this thing debuted the platform it's on has evolved so much that it's still good enough to to launch a new truck and i will say the new frontier We think it's going to be around. Twenty eight twenty nine thirty thousand bucks. A the styling is on point right. It's got a muscular look. It looks good. it's when you get into the pro four x and the pro x version explain that in a second you you start to get. The offroad look bigger tires skid plates. It's got some good clearances and stuff. It's got like the toyota tacoma. It's got the outlet one ten plug in the back new infotainment system yes. The nissan finally has apple carplay and android auto different screen sizes digital dash as well but compared to the toyota. This has three hundred and ten horsepower. Which is Which is a bit of a step up a little more torque as well to eighty one pound feet of torque What did we say. The was like two eighty something so not not not too bad in that regard. Now there's an asset. Sv trim then. There's a pro for ax. That's like the. Trt pro tacoma. It's the all wheel four wheel. Drive offroad looking version however they do a pro four x and a pro a x. I believe it is. She can get a two wheel drive version with the offroad luck or a four wheel drive version with the offroad luck so if you just want the to drive the two wheel yeah so you could do either way. New eight inch touchscreen. I think there's an upgradable to a nine inch version up their seven inch driver. Display with analog gauges on the side so you get nice. Intentional gauges in in the second or in the middle there and it looks good. I don't know so it's got a little bit more power Not not the highest tow rating at six thousand or sixty five hundred pounds. Some of the. Oh the more to- version like colorado and jeep. Gladiator will be able to tow more. You know and again if you're buying it for towing that's one of the things you really look at. But if you're not buying it for towing you're looking at all of these other features anyway so. It was just kind of interesting to spend a little bit of time in that. I wasn't trying to to dog. On the on the tacoma. But i was just i guess i had this preset notion in my head of the bar was raised higher when i got into it. I thought it was fine. And i get it It was fun to drive but because the bar was set high. I guess my only reasonable conclusion would be a little bit disappointment. Because that's your objective opinion. Everybody else kiss your ass. Well i honestly. I think some people were saying you know. Previous model was a little bit better or a little more fun. And i know a lot of people have different opinions of that like anything that has this much longevity into it. You're going to be. You're always going to say things. Like oh i like you know the gen our gen two or gen three of anything so i appreciate everybody hop onto social media and just kind of looking what i what i wrote and commenting. I like to hear all the comments from the people that have them. You know. I didn't know about the common thing being a fairly calm. They would be a gearchange which seems to be what what people were telling me. And it was interesting because i had pointed out a week or so ago. These are all things that the aftermarket could easily address and we are big fans of the aftermarket. Here we modify pretty much everything we touch because we enjoy it. And and i said hey you know. There's a great super charger package out there. I think magnusson has a super charger package for it. Good way to add thirty or so percent horsepower. Add another eighty hunt eighty ninety horsepower. That's a cool option. And i pointed out that a lot of companies now are doing this hand-held plug in this. Ob two port plug him. That changes the throttle response. And i thought that might be an inexpensive way of making it a little snappier around town without spending much money and i swear. I didn't know this was going to happen. But as i walked into the studio. Chris handed me ad and he said hey. We've got a new sponsor so my discussion on the tacoma has nothing to do with this ad however the timing couldn't be better so i'm going to introduce you guys to the beedi power t s booster so. Say goodbye to that. Dead laggy throttle pedal feeling.

"So much talk so much popularity so much interest in bronco that we already know that ford wanted to take bronco. As a standalone brand the way mustang is right all the various mustangs from. Gd five hundred. Aeko boost mach one gt blah blah blah and mustang machi. Well we've got bronco coming out. We've got broncos sport we've got two doors who've got four doors we're gonna get warthog the the big ass bronco now. There's talk of doing a pickup truck version. A competitor jeep gladiator version of bronco. Which could be cool could be interesting. I i need to get the big one out. Yes i get the big now so ford hit anybody else about deliver circus and people. I know the issue is is is ford into the dealers say who would be interested in building a standalone them or almost a a a standalone dealer. Maybe show it's on the property. Something bronco branded. Maybe a little off road course or something and of course part of that is the dealer is going well. What's in store for bronco and that's where we get information going. Hey there could be a pickup truck version. Manco and i tell you what a hundred dealers right off. The bat said yeah. We're interested in that. We think there's a big future in bronco. Thank you back in the orders being placed seem to to make a big difference so so we could end up getting some standalone bronco rooms and so and and then it starts you start to think about if that works for bronco. Do they do it with mustang. I some of the dealers have mustang showroom like we go out to galp in autosport incumbent motors they have kind of a mustang showroom. Do other car companies started to do an rt broom or you know and just put the trucks in the cars and all that stuff in there although that's a tougher question for them because although they may keep that brander they're not going to keep the brain. I forget what the damn news was but the higher onstage saying. Yeah yeah right so the member with the different facets of the trump. Yeah and. I don't know i mean mercedes doesn't really have like an amg showroom or an m. showroom with bmw so They just get everybody into the showroom. But who knows i mean the volume could be high enough that it could justify for bronco right if the bronco turns out to be what. It's what it's advertised than i can see that happening. One hundred percent. Yeah and a lot of dealers like you said jumping on gore. I would imagine cal. I throw their hat. They're trying to find real estate. They just opened Land rover dealer across the street and the dealers bad ass. It looks great. And i. I heard they tried to get more space but that the fultz in with landlords and things like that all right so i want to talk about a real quick. I want to talk about well. I let me tell you about geico then. I want to talk about toyota tacoma. We got a lot of responses on the post. That i about turtle tacoma gyco you own your.

"And use promo code car cast so empire covers dot com. Protect what you love. It's not a bad idea. Might as well do that. I don't mind it on the indoors. Well you know i got. I moved into my matt cave there and the way. The building is warehouse. It's industrial so there's one skylight and the skylight kinda is raised at. It's got these louvers on it and it you can hear wind and even get a little bit of rain. If it's windy and rainy out the louvers are supposed to overlap. So it doesn't really get a lot of water but it does anyway and it's designed that if there was a fire on the inside the smoke can go out right so i get it but you can't seal it off and you can't tighten the louver so it's been so windy even when i go into my warehouse. I'm starting to see dust and everything like it's a little quicker. I imagine some amount of dust. But now i'm starting to think maybe gonna start covering the things or hearing comes so here comes the quest. Yeah if you have a vehicle this wrapped or ceramic coating. You put the koran inside. Does the cover you anything I mean does it. Damage the rap. If it's over for a long period of time could stick to it. Yeah we're gonna ask them ours. We're going to ask more questions about that. I think it would be fine because the covers of already been designed over the years to be more breathable and stuff to allow. you know you don't get mold and moisture underneath you know. It's got to be able to protect from the elements but also allow the paint stuff to breathe so if they're good enough for pain. I imagine they're good enough for for the wraps and stuff as well but the the whole idea is like you bring your stuff indoors so you stare at it have you. I don't want to walk. Nc budget great cover. So it's thought yeah you can put the clear like we had when we were moving stuff around. Obviously when the guys paint stuff they have the big kark condom thing like the big plastic clear cover but now it just looks like your cars underwater. Just car castle. Yeah you get a car. That takes a lot of space as well. But that's really for the for the real collector cars or stuff. That's very seasonal. You know you gotta park it for months at a time. Yeah i think i'm gonna put the yeah. That probably makes a little bit more sense all right so moving on. I want to get into this issue just a little bit. I don't want to spend too much time on it because it. It affects us but also it's like a little bit distant but this issue with the computer chips all the chips that are delaying manufacturing vehicle manufacturing. What's going on. Is we get so many of our semiconductor chips from china or various overseas places. Mostly china the pandemic shut down factories. So then they got a backlog of these chips and they had no idea it was gonna backlog was going to get so big because it turned out as people were home. They were still kind of buying things now. We're talking about space right. Well this everything. From small on tron. Ix even iphones laptops computers game stations. Dvr like everything you can imagine in the automotive world this these chips these the semiconductors basically and everything from the ecu computers braking systems transmission controllers. Infotainment systems are all in vehicles and some of the car companies are really hit by this. i believe. Gm is a big one and now we're back to shutting down factories like when when the pandemic hit and the car companies shut down for health reasons. And then when when car dealer starting to up again like great but we don't have inventory. We don't have any more cars. We sold what we had on the law so we need cars now. It's backed up again so there was a a meeting of the minds. Basically the government biden and and a bunch of the tech companies and car companies and t. Del four gm salons us intel northrop grumman like Various industries kind of all. Got together and said. What can we do about this. How do we fix on a go forward basis. you know because it's just widespread. I believe iphones delayed new iphones delayed. Everything's delayed. I want to say that in around nineteen ninety the us we produced thirty percent thirty seven percent of the semiconductors that we needed here. And now we're only producing twelve percent so significant reduction. So here's here's the answer. The answer is there's absolutely nothing we can do to fix the short term need. We just gotta wait it out at as all of our partners overseas ramp up get these things processed and shipped out the door and hopefully with quality control. Then we'll be fine but the discussion was. How do we get ahead of this. Now's the time to push toward more. Us manufacturing and yes a lot of the companies out here. The big tech companies are saying we are interested in in producing this stuff here in the us And i think i forgot who it was. Maybe it was intel. They were saying yeah. We're gonna we're gonna step up what we can do here in the us but it's going to be up six to nine months ramp up time just to start producing these things so before instead. I guess i mean they're kinda hit by everybody's hit by this right like everybody's head to the launch of the bronco eight. Everything's delayed everything is delayed. All factories are slowed down or halted. And it's quite. It's quite a bit of an issue and you know again again. Brings up another point right. What is it gonna do. The production numbers these vehicles during twenty twenty one and down. The road is gonna make the cars much more valuable because not many of them were produced. Right yes so there. It's pro the questions could be will limit the overall manufacturing production numbers probably not. But you're right for the twenty twenty twenty twenty one models of cars. They will be pretty. They will be pretty limited right. I mean we. We still have delay on on the bronco full-sized bronco but there was something like one hundred ninety. Thousand orders were placed I think two thirds of them ended up being like legit like deposits were made people want under so following up and also in that regard. There's been so much talk so much popularity so much interest in bronco that we already know that ford wanted to take bronco..

They don't make a fifty state in a forty nine the differences they make one good cadillac converter and then they just pay extra for the california carb stamp. "Combos. Charlie Harder tells us how much it'll be. The city starts collecting the extra 1/10 of 1% tax on July 1st that brings the total sales tax into coma to 10.3%. Council member Chris Beall says the money will help people who are struggling to find a place to live really comfort. We're doing this. I I just think it's kind of a landmark moment here. That really can't be underscored that we have not had a sustainable source of funding like this for Housing Trust fund or economic development, Harvard or anything like that The money will be used to buy or build affordable housing, as well as getting people mental and behavioral health treatment. It's expected to bring in an extra $5 million a year in revenue. The Tacoma sales tax will be among the highest in the state. Charlie Harder Come Oni Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

How Katherine Raz Developed 'The Fernseed'

"Welcome back to the slow lovers. Podcasts with deborah printing at. I'm so excited today to introduce catherine razz owner of the fern seed in tacoma washington. She's a slow flowers member. We've never met in person. We're doing this over resume. But we're kind of neighbors so it's so great to see on the screen to look if you kathryn. Thanks for having a really appreciate it. Oh you bet catherine I love the name of your business. You've been on my radar. Because i started following you immediately after the joint slow flowers but before we get started. Can you describe the name like what is the influence of that name. It says plants with gardening and growing. But it's not super obvious. It's a great name. Yeah thank you. The name is scandinavian legend. Or there's like a north legend or early english or something A myth about essentially like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow if somebody finds a fern see because we all know that ferns spawn from spores not seeds. Sometimes we'll get people coming in and explaining that to us any ladies. Did you know But the idea is that if you find the seat of a fern on the summer solstice you can achieve invisibility Lower and so then. I also really liked it because I have a background in marketing and specifically search engine optimization and It was a it was a word that was easily. Google lable like we could be a worthy number one ranking term and google for the fern seed so i picked it also for that reason. Oh it does. It does have a little bit of a mythology kind of storybook vibe that you describe it because this'll related to the solstice. Do you do anything. Special on the summer solstice in which is usually what june twenty-first. Yeah well we try to last year but of course we were just reopening post covid and we were like well. We can't really have an event but this year we are. We're going to do sort of like a midsummer you know the film summer we wanted to do. Kind of like a midsummer maget with flowers and do some floral crowns and some really fun stuff around the love. That is so. It's so apropos. A love that.

"Has emerged in which Troyer Sought help while off duty to calls of elements in common as CO most Corwin Headache, explaining this 911 call placed last November, Troyer asks the dispatcher to send officers to his location into comas, North end people breaking into my car and got a little skirmish with 911 Audio is courtesy of the Seattle Times, Troyer told the dispatcher. Black men in Puffy Jackets had his wallet, but during a struggle, he was able to get it back. By the time Troyer called 911. The suspects were gone. They're gonna come back, but I just got one years. Officers arrived but found no suspects. They declined to file a police report. The incident has come to light in the wake of a separate 911 call Troyer placed in January in which the sheriff said he had cornered a man who either tried to kill him or had threatened to kill him. Troyer phrased it both ways. The man turned out to be a black newspaper carrier on his regular route. That incident has led some to charge Troyer with racism and call for his resignation. Seattle to open more permanent COVID-19 vaccination sites in Rainier Beach, West Seattle, Lumen Field Event Center

"Been reporting how seattle is turning some of its testing sites into permanent vaccination sites starting today the rainier beach side is prepared to give about two thousand shots a week and so is second location in west seattle. Kyw's josh amac nickeled visited the rainier beach vaccination clinic today joshua high and describe this vaccination site for us well like every other side. It's open to people who are eligible. Mostly that means seniors over sixty five but there are a few other categories to like home health workers anyway. Everyone who shows up here has an appointment and they walk up and they check in at a table and then when it's their turn they passed. They passed through one of several shipping containers on a train or on the back of a truck and inside there is an administrator in a little booth. And there's someone from the fire department and that person gives you your shot and then you walk out the back of the shipping container into an outdoor area and then you hang out under a tent for like fifteen minutes with a view of the lake all right well. Did you get to speak to anyone there. Yeah i spoke to a lot of seniors there in the recovery tent. And they told me before today trying to get a vaccination appointment was a real chore. Roberta bird right said she couldn't sleep. She wanted an appointment so badly. Given times i wake up you know in the morning. Three o'clock two o'clock in during the throughout the day. And then of course the site that we look. It's like places. Like well up in tacoma and you know really far out. And i'm not going to those places so i just kept looking and looking so now opened up so she also got on wait lists at pharmacies and they told her they'd call but they never did and then she heard from a friend that the southeast seattle senior center was helping seniors make appointments and so she called. They called me back right away like within a few days and schedule being. I'm here bird right. Told me that she had concerns about the safety of the vaccine so it was reassuring for her to go through a community group. Yeah that's good news that roberta got her shot. And just you know. We've been hearing stories about grandkids helping their grandparents schedule. An appointment you know for a variety of reasons you know. Maybe the grandparents don't have a smartphone or computer or maybe like roberta's case the the grandparents are trying to just striking out but in this case it sounds like the senior center is stepping in. Yes and that is the strategy here. They're still far more demand for vaccines than there is supply and so these new vaccination sites are favoring referrals they're working closely with community groups and those groups are doing the outreach. Linda green runs the southeast seattle senior center. That's the group that helped this person earlier. Find their appointment and she says she got her staff spending all their time. Basically going after vaccination appointments for seniors. But it's hard because there just aren't enough vaccines so she said it feels like a competition. Well it's a competition because now we're have folks who are competing you've got the folks who are seventy five years old and older. We've got the sixty five year old. We've got those folks who are under fifty but are also caretakers for those who are sixty five and over or seventy and over. And i know that we have to start from the top the most vulnerable and work our way down but it still is somewhat competitive as to. Who's going to get it first. So all of those those areas we still have to define but we are of the opinion that the goal is for everyone to get vaccinated so whomever we can fit into that classification. That's what we're doing. Yeah and in that competition for vaccines. It helps to have a community group to help you get an appointment. But eventually officials tell me the problem will cease to be a vaccine shortage problem and will become a communication problem. You know trying to get enough people to show up and use all the vaccines right. And we're hearing. There will be more and more vaccinations slots opening up later as well and and another thing. We learned today. Josh was later this month. There's going to be another max. Vaccination site opening up in seattle At the former centurylink field now known as linfield yes and with that site. They're going to start small in the middle of the month but as soon as enough vaccines are on the way that site will be able to push out twenty one thousand vaccinations per day. They told me yeah. That sounds like a lot of shots. When is that going to be. They wouldn't say for sure. Only the it'll happen as soon as possible. And if you're a senior and you want to be proactive linda. Green at the southeast seattle senior center says give them a call. And they'll help you. You don't even have to be in seattle proper anywhere in king. County is fine and then of course you can also use the washington phase finder website. Which helped at least one senior here today.

State Trends In Employer Premiums And Deductibles

"Recently. The commonwealth fund examined the extent to which people with moderate incomes in employer health plans face high premium and deductible costs relative to their income to discuss the results of the study and the implications for policy holders going forward. I'm joined by sarah collins vice president of healthcare coverage and access at the commonwealth fund. Sarah welcome to the show. Thank you so much. Mike so sarah watches. Start out by telling us why you initiated this study and what you're looking for well employer health coverage is really the backbone of the us health insurance system more than half the population of the united states about one hundred sixty million people get their coverage through an employer so the purpose of this study was to look at trends over the last decade and the amount that workers and their families are paying for their employer health insurance and the size of their deductibles in all fifty states and the district of columbia and we compare these worker cost to median income in each state in order to get a sense of the economic burden of these costs on middle income families. And how did you go about conducting the research. We've been conducting the study nearly every year since twenty ten Using the latest data From what's known as the insurance components. Federal medical medical expenditure panel survey This survey is the most comprehensive national survey of use employer. health plans In twenty nineteen Which is the latest year of data. That's available This survey interviewed more than forty thousand business. Establishments With an overall response rate of fifty nine percent we computed from the survey reported statewide average premiums so we take the premiums reported by business establishments and average them across the state and we do the same deductibles and then we compared those averages to the median income in each state so this provides a rough measure of the affordability protectiveness of employer coverage and allows us to track changes over time. And what did you find after you conducted this study. We found that premium contributions and deductibles in employer plans took up a growing share of workers incomes over the past decade those costs together so premium contributions and deductibles accounted for eleven point five percent of meeting median household income and twenty nineteen. This is up from about nine point one percent a decade earlier the this cost burden in employer. Health plans has increased over the past decade because cumulative growth in median income has been slower growth in premium contributions deductibles. We also find that these contributions premium contributions deductibles as well as needing income vary considerably across the country the total cost of premiums and deductibles across single and family policies ranged from a low of about fifty. Five hundred dollars in hawaii. Too high of more than eighty five hundred dollars in nine states. Meet an income ranged from a low of about forty nine thousand and mississippi in mexico too highs around ninety thousand or more in massachusetts minnesota new hampshire new jersey what workers pay towards their premiums and deductibles comprised about ten percent or more of median income in thirty seven states in two thousand ten and twenty nineteen. This is up from about ten states Twenty ten in nine states workers combined costs were fourteen percent or more of meeting income workers in new mexico and louisiana face the highest potential cost relative to their income more than seventeen percent and we actually also find that people living in states that have lower meeting incomes like new mexico are doubly burdened on average workers in states where the median income is lower than the national median income face higher premiums and deductibles compared to people in states with higher median incomes. Also find that. Many people employer plans across. The country are insured Because their deductibles are high. Relative to their incomes tacoma fund has found that insured people who have high out of pocket costs and deductibles relative to their income are more likely to face problems accessing care or paying medical bills Than people who are not under insured. We've we've defined someone with insurance as under insert at their health plans. Deductibles deductible equals about five percent or more of income or if they're out of pocket costs reached similar thresholds in this study across the country. Many people employer plans are underinsured by this measure average deductibles relative median income or five percent or more in twenty states and ranged as high as seven percent in mexico.

The thing that sticks out to me about what you're saying is that when you were expanding to a new market you the realization that it was gonna take a lot of resources and a lot of time to not only publish content but to get it to rank and i think that's one of the important things that great. Seo's realized that seo is not necessarily a strategy that you can build overnight. There is value to other marketing channels social media. Marketing performance marketing. That has a quicker return and you in a hurry to start building your audience so you focused on linked in. Let's talk a little bit about what you've learned on the linked in platform most of the time when we talk about seo we are talking about optimizing our content so google ranks it but in reality great seo actually happens across multiple channels. You <Speech_Male> know why <Speech_Male> police made <Speech_Male> the decisions that <Speech_Male> they did on that <Speech_Male> street, and <Speech_Male> whether different decisions <Speech_Male> were possible. <Speech_Male> And, <Speech_Male> ultimately you <Speech_Male> know whether any of those <Speech_Male> four Tacoma police <Speech_Male> officers <Speech_Male> who responded <Speech_Male> to LS <Speech_Male> that night will face <Speech_Male> criminal charges. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> That is a high <Speech_Male> bar historically, <Speech_Male> and <Speech_Male> as we know in Washington, <Speech_Male> state very <Speech_Male> very few <Speech_Male> police officers <Speech_Male> in the past <Speech_Male> forty <Speech_Male> years have <Speech_Male> been charged with <Speech_Male> crimes in the case <Speech_Male> of using deadly <Speech_Male> force. <Speech_Male> And I think <Speech_Male> like a broader overarching <Speech_Male> question with <Speech_Male> this is <Speech_Male> what happened <Speech_Male> to I nine forty? What <Speech_Male> happened to all these <Speech_Male> regulations that were <Speech_Male> supposed to put Washington <Speech_Male> state ahead <Speech_Male> of other states <Speech_Male> on issues <SpeakerChange> exactly <Speech_Male> like this? <Speech_Female> And where <Speech_Female> is the piece <Speech_Female> for accountability <Speech_Female> than <Speech_Female> when people don't follow <Speech_Female> the rules? It doesn't add to be fancy, but it does have to cover your nose and mouth, and this is enforceable. Not complying is a misdemeanor offense that could get you ninety days in jail and a thousand dollar fine. The order takes effect Friday June twenty sixth. And while we're all circling dates on the calendar about drawing one around July twenty fourth. That's the plan for baseball's opening day. The League reached a deal with players yesterday for a sixty game season, no word yet from the mariners about when or wear their season will open. On Tuesday the State Attorney General's said he would examine thirty recent cases where police used deadly force, these deaths were supposed to trigger an independent investigation. Thanks to the states, New Police Accountability Law that voters passed in twenty eighteen, but now case in Tacoma is raising questions about how the law is being applied, and who's even keeping track. It's the story of thirty-three-year-old Manny Ellis by many accounts. He was getting things together. He was in stable housing and playing drums in his church, but in early March. He had an encounter with the Tacoma police officer that ended with him, saying I can't breath sir. Will James is a reporter with Cayenne kayaks. So on the night of March. Third Minneapolis was on this kind of nightly walk on his way home and. According to police, officer saw him trying to open the doors of occupied vehicles on the street. So officers responded somehow this leads to a fight between the officers and LS of physical fight that escalates until many Ellis's taste. He's taken to the ground and he's handcuffed on this residential street. And a spit hood is placed over his head. And at some point. Many others. What are his last recorded words which are I can't breathe sir? The officers at some point call for help. Some medics arrive and they try to revive this, but he. He dies there on that street corner. And, according to the Pierce County, medical examiner, the cause of death was lack of oxygen. Due to the way he was restrained his positioning on the ground and spit hood that was over his face. And a secondary factor was a high level of methamphetamine that was in his system. And the medical examiner ruled his death a homicide meaning in this context it was caused by another person right, and it is important to remember that police officers are often the people that get called to scenes just like the one that many Ellis was killed at scenes where someone is not doing something that is particularly dangerous or crimen all. But just requires some sort of response. It kind of brings home, one of the points that's emerging all around the country in the wake of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis and these protests, which is that police are often filling a role that might be filled by social workers or something in a different context. Maybe Manny LS needed a ride home that night. Yeah So much of the conversation, the past couple of weeks has focused on on race, and that is a huge underlying factor in all of these cases that we've been hearing about, but what's interesting about many Ellis's case to is it brings up another issue that we've been talking about in Washington state for a long time, which is de. Raden. This idea that maybe their ways to train police to respond in a way other than with force. Were there other choices? The police officers could have made that night. That would have resulted in a different outcome. And that gets to the accountability piece will Washington. Voters passed new statewide police reforms less than two years ago. What's supposed to be happening here? That's new from I nine forty. Yes so nine forty was a whole suite of police accountability regulations that affected training and the abilities that prosecutors have, but the relevant part of it here is the investigation part of it. And what was supposed to do was ensure that when police agencies investigate each other for deadly use of force. That those investigations will be more transparent and more independent. So what was supposed to happen was that. Number One an investigative team was appointed and that the names of those investigative members were made public. There's also supposed to be to community members to people outside the police department. who were supposed to have been picked to help of that? The members of that investigative team. The sheriff's Department was also supposed to appoint a family liaison, a person whose job it was to regularly update the family members to make sure the family was not just sitting on the sidelines. Waiting as is so often the case in these investigations. We still don't know exactly what went wrong or how much went wrong, but there are certainly indications right now that. The Pierce County Sheriff's department didn't do those things. And there may have been several cases in Washington state since nine forty became law that were supposed to follow these requirements, and didn't so. We're still learning more about how wrong this has gone in implementation of nine forty, and why those things are happening. And there was an investigation of Manny Ellis's death. It was being handled by the Pierce County Sheriff's department, but that had some problems. Tell me what happened. Yeah, so after investigating the case for like three full months. When it came time for the sheriff's Department to present its findings to the county prosecutor, the county prosecutor learned that a sheriff's deputy was actually at the scene of Alice's death, and in her eyes and then governor. Jay Inslee is. Is that just tainted the whole investigation and prompted them to want to start over? Okay so now the investigation has been taken over by the state and the attorney. General will be the one to decide on any charges..
