Fast Food Giants are Reinventing the Restaurant, Pandemic Style

"Not so long ago fast food restaurants were looking for ways to get you to stay a little longer they sprucing up their dining rooms and building ball pits for the kids after all the more time at your table the more likely you are to order another menu item or two, but dining in is so two thousand nineteen isn't it? Now thanks in part to the pandemic, these quick service eateries or redesigning their restaurants to get you in and out as fast as possible. Burger, King has just unveiled its pandemic inspired restaurants of the future. There are two concepts, both of which maximize social distance. The smaller of the two designs has no dining room at all. Instead, the would-be dining space is used for additional drive through lanes two lanes to be exact. Once your order is ready, a conveyor belt will deliver it to your car window. Of course, if you're craving more human contact, you can also go old school and walk up to an order window. The second concept is a t shaped two storey restaurant with the kitchen. Upstairs this, let's Burger King devote more real estate to park in order spots in various drive-thru options the companies. Also, experimenting with lockers where you can pick up your food, you get the locker number and a unique combination when you order on the APP, the idea is to make the experience as contact free as possible, and that's important to customers drive throughs and meal delivery services like Rub and eats have been a lifeline for burger king as indoor dining was banned or restricted during a large part of the pandemic CNN reports in the second quarter through sales made up eighty five percent of the company's total US sales. Burger King says it will be testing. It's new concepts in warm climate areas like Florida, and the Caribbean but no word on exactly when that will start. Another major fast-food player that's also trying to get you out of its restaurants quickly is Taco Bell. TACO Bell so-called go mobile locations have been in development for a few years but the pandemic accelerated plans for them according to nation's restaurant news. These locations are smaller because like Burger kings, restaurants of the future. They also eliminate dining space also liked burger king concept. You can place or on the TACO BELL APP and have your meal brought out to you by a bellhop get the company will begin opening new stores early next year the design is a far cry from the one that the TACO giant unveiled in early March, a gaming concept restaurant plan to test in California customers would. be able to play video games in addition to dining and in January burger king announced plans to make gets dining experience a little posher the king plan to make over a Saint Louis location with white subway tiles on the floor bench seats inspired by classic cadillacs and warm lighting retail wire reported. You might be munching on your fries, but you'd be doing it in style. Now, a combination of pandemic dining restrictions and changing customer behavior has made such concepts as Cadillac benches obsolete. Well, it was fun while it lasted, but it's time to say so long to indoor play grounds and Walker inspired light fixtures for the time being at least fast food customers are opting out of dining in. Businesses Turn To Touchscreens During COVID times

"In an effort to decrease person to person contact many businesses have chosen these interactive displays Pretty cool. You've seen them at BOOT BARN target, Taco Bell Red Robin. There are many are made by a company named Yellow John. Lamb. Is here to tell us all about it John Philipson. Yeah. Thanks having me Jefferson the re this pandemic people are trying to really look at their entire systems on and they're finding it ways in beans at which the they find deficiencies in their software package or their how their customers interact, and so they are migrating more towards different types of self service. It reduces that humid human contact it. It actually virtually can eliminate it. A person can walk up to a self service kiosks whether it's ordering tickets or whether it's you're actually seeing that right now in movie theaters that are reopening, you're seeing where they are trying to do social distancing I programming the system in the person can choose a seed, but other seats are blocked out. So they kind of have this this ability naturally and they never had to talk to a person. There's no, there's no worrying about six feet they're literally they can be twenty feet away from somebody as they purchase their tickets. But what about all those hands the Dover go over the unit all day long don't those contain germs. They do but several civil aspects of that one we know for a fact, we saw our cleaning protocols page just skyrocketed in usage when this pandemic started basically about early March. Man Wants Boneless Chicken Wings Removed From Menus

"A butcher was mislabeling their cuts of meat. But then we go around pretending as though the rest of the chicken is its wing. Number two boneless chicken wings are just chicken tenders, which are already boneless. I don't go to that order boneless tacos. I don't go in order boneless club sandwiches. I don't ask for boneless auto repair. It's just what's expected. The number three. We need to raise our Children better. Our Children are raised being afraid of having bones attached to their meat. That's where meat comes from. It grows on bones. We need to teach them that the wing of a chicken is from a chicken, and it's delicious. I propose that we renamed boneless wings in the city of Lincoln. We can call them. Both low style chicken tenders. We can call them wet tenders. We can call them saucy nug Zor trash. We can take these steps and show the country that where we stand on that we understand that we've been living alive for far too long, and we know it because we feel it in our bones. LG adds virtual showroom experience for IFA 2020

"LG. L.. That company is well Samsung experimenting with these virtual Maroons Taco bit about that. Yeah. So what what they've done is in honesty like virtual press conference is not that different from being there in person I mean besides the fact meeting people being able to to have kind of that in person experience. But the thing that you cannot get virtually is a demo you can't see what a phone or TV or you know washing machine looks. Like through your computer screen, you can't see what these like sharp lead TV's looked like when you're looking at them through your laptop display. So what these companies have tried to do is make these sort of virtual demo rooms. So Samsung's is is kind of dislike virtual game. They basically worked with epic's unreal engine to make this kind of I described it as a choose your own adventure sort of demo. So you're in this Samsung designed house and. You can walk around and look at different products and basically there's the way it works. was there Press Conference and people would. Would attend that but then you could say like Oh hey, I actually went to see the ports on the back of this TV so you could stay back and look at the ports or you could use augmented reality to see what the TV looks like on your wall. LG went a little differently A kind of a game experience there's appears to be more of a youtube sort sort of videos that they have on a website where it will be. Oh, here's our wall of TV's what it looks like They kind of recreated it in the sort of Messa, the convention center what it looked like F- overall is going to have a virtual component as well and I'm very curious to see what that looks like I haven't. Seen that yet since the show starts on the third right and I mean, look these are going virtual and I appreciate that they're taking these steps to. Try to replicate the demo experience but. Is that? Is that really going to replace a? Note this in your pre today that the the lack of excitement is something that served dog the industry and I think that's partly because we can't get hands on right away. Do you think that's going to be a problem with the show? Yeah, definitely. Even. With these virtual demo rooms, they don't really solve the issue of. Feeling and and holding these in your hand or seeing them up close like it's one thing to learn about lg TV that you could roll up is awesome. It's totally different to see something like that in person and see something like that on video as opposed to a video from journalists as opposed to kind of these slick marketing videos. That's a that's a very different experience. So I think this is something that the whole industry is going to have to deal with. And experiment and I talked to Samsung's head of marketing for Europe and he said that you know they decided to do this sort of game gamified experience for EPA but they could be doing something totally different for CAS like they have to figure out you know what kind of is the best format for each event? been my last question is really like do you think these these virtual rooms or virtual experiences will be around in the long run even after the pandemic is long gone. I think that we're going to see companies really re evaluate what they do in terms of events like is it worth spending? Tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars to attend a conference in. Las. Vegas that maybe doesn't really match up with the timing for your products anyway or is it better for you to do something virtually the issue for a lot of these companies is. They don't necessarily have the cachet of a Samsung or an apple who can have their own events. So they really count on having a convention to capture a lot of journalists and a lot of interest all at once. I do think companies are going to try to figure out how to kind of keep some of this stuff around like Samsung had marketing said that that's something that they're trying to figure out is in the future. Do You kind of combine the physical and the virtual together, and it'll be really interesting to see what these companies come up with. All right. Well, thanks for your time

The DNC and RNC are going virtual. What can we expect?

"So actually the coronavirus pandemic everything has gone virtual. We covered all digital conferences like Tho- launches, apples, WDC. In DNC are completely different animals Taco bell expecting to see well I. Think it's GonNa be a very, highly produced. Event just like it normally is but it's GonNa be really different because you know when they. When they usually do this, you've got like thousands of people in a huge arena you know you have people talking. And they're they're mostly talking to the to the people, the viewers and the audience. Sitting at home on their couches. Anyway. But you have that vibe you have that you know the people cheering it's it's like being in a live sporting event in a sense you know so like that's going to be lost a bit. Yeah. We've we've had instances with like the the NBA right they put up digital boards with with people that are virtually in I've watched the most games. It's definitely not. It doesn't really replicate the feeling of being at a game where the ambiance there I imagine a lot of the energy that would have been in those conferences have people been there. Is really kind of sucked away, right? Yeah and you know and that's really political conventions are basically like cheerleading events right? You know it's like the party faithful as there you've got these delegates from all around the country they're like really Gung Ho for their party and their candidate and they wanna like. You know just cheer their heads off and it's you know. So you know I think that energy is going to be a bit different but I'm also curious to see like what creative things they come up with right like like you mentioned the NBA thing like like are they going to do something like that? You know I mean? It'll be interesting to see how they approach it. Yeah. Have you got any kind of indication on on what they might do to create that excitement that is would be missing from having all those folks there. Yeah. So the the DNC they they have been, they've definitely said that they are going to try to involve people like regular everyday people. So I'm wondering if it is going to be something NBA like right where they have screens. Right there. But we'll definitely be having some like. Some people getting beamed in from all across the US whether it's you know. Politicians or or just SORTA your regular everyday folks who are like either live on video and a lot of like these pre produced videos people have been they've had this campaign where people are able to. Send in their videos like with prompts like I know Joe and talk about like why they're excited about Joe Biden and that kind of thing. So they're going to have that SORTA interspersed throughout the program. So it'll be interesting to see like how it all Kinda comes together. To DNC specifically, what what is that? GonNa look like will anyone actually be in Milwaukee? So there will probably be like a skeleton kind of crew in Milwaukee like I've heard that that Tom Perez, who's the chairman of the DNC was still planning to go to Milwaukee to gavel in the convention officially. But the big speakers you know like Joe Biden, who's the presumptive nominee he is not going to be there he's going to be somewhere in Delaware. Now, they've said he's not probably going to do it from his basement. So some place else in Delaware. In the Wilmington area where he lives. So that'll be interesting. I wonder how they they might dress up whatever venue he's in. You know like he was speaking with. Kamala Harris. You know the other day they've had actually a couple of speaking engagements and they've got the flags everywhere but like the backdrop didn't really look all that interesting to me. So it'll it'll I wonder how they're going to you know jazz it up so that it looks cool. How's the Brokaw can work? Yeah. So the roll call and by the way like I got to go to the convention in two, Thousand Sixteen, the roll call is pretty cool. Just in general when you're there in the room, there's like this vibe all the people stand up and they say, you know I'm from South Carolina and they were the whatever state and we pledge our ex delegates to. And so it's like an exciting moment. So it's going to be totally different this time 'cause they're all not going to be in the room but I you know they've said they're. GonNa. Kind of pop around all all the states and so you're probably going to have people from those states. Doing their call and I'm sure they're gonNA do something jazzy about like. You know I'm from Delaware. So it's like Delaware the first state in the nation. Allah. Probably say something like that I don't know. So it'll. We'll see. We'll see what about the NC I know there was a lot of back and forth about where was gonna be in whether it was go digital What is that GonNa was so that you know I think that's still to be determined right? Like they're still they haven't put out a whole lot of information about like what it's GonNa look like exactly. So I mean I want I wonder if some of this might change in the next week but. So far they are. Going to have a very reduced crowd in Charlotte. President trump will not be there to accept the nomination. In they're gonNa have like something like you know three hundred or so delegates there. So you know I don't know I don't know if they're going to try to do some things kind of like in in the arena although I think that would look pretty. bleak. If it's people, you know space really far apart. So I think that's still Kinda to be determined with what they're going to be doing it wear for folks who are watching these where can you check out the streams? So the DNC they've announced a whole bunch of places like you're gonna be able to stream, it live on youtube and facebook and twitter and And then the convention is officially you know airing from nine to eleven every night and all the broadcast channels will have it for the last hour. And and then they're gonNA have it on like TV and Roku and so they were going to be a lot of opportunities for people to stream it or. Even, to SORTA catch it on the networks got looking at some of the other challenges I mean we talked a little bit about the lack of energy. But what are the potential pitfalls who going virtual? Yeah. Well I mean we've all been watching. You know some of these cable news shows lately right like in sometimes you get like the guests who are like pixellated or their screen freezes. You know so I think that's going to be a challenge. You know you don't want somebody to be mid-sentence and all of a sudden they're face completely frees up. So that'll be a challenge. Yasser. Don't want it to look like a really boring call. With. With everybody with the bookcase in the background. So I think they'll have to figure out ways to to make it look interesting and you know. And not have any sort of technical glitches.

Interview With Susan Park

"Or those of you who are foodies and I know if you don't consider yourself a food, do you like food? Some of our most popular episodes are when we bring on people who own restaurants or who are chefs and my guest today. Is kind of a combination. She's not a chef. She's married to a chef. This is Susan g young park, and she and her husband are the owners of a very unusual Taco place near the campus is called. I think I'm saying this right Revolucionario? Is that correct? Yes, it's a revolutionary on North African Tacos on. At one, four, three, six, West Jefferson, boulevard currently were only open on weekends, Saturdays, and Sundays for pick up orders only from noon till three, and actually I am a chef to learn more. Oh okay. Okay. Yeah. Well, you know, I definitely want to do a deep dive. Into, your establishment. But you know since we're recording this in early May and is still during the whole shutdown, and this is a restaurant I gotta ask you because we'll put this out relatively soon. This episode I have to ask you like, how has it been for you guys with the shutdown with the limited time that you're open. How's that going? It's been very, very asymmetric call. Because I also have. Started a nonprofit at the end of February and a lot of people keep asking me how I knew to start early with the Asian. American. Specific food. Bank. It's because I am an Asian American person. Who? WHO also owns also Asian American owner. And I. My restaurant is near USC SO I. Get to talk to a lot of. Asian, American, and Asian international students. So my restaurant very community driven. So. As an Asian American person business owner and somebody who speaks to Asian American students in Asian international students on a regular basis. You know I could feel the of sacks of you know, the the Wuhan Virus China virus. Right one international news broke in in December, and I can feel it affecting my business to I can feel it affecting my business, my in store business just tanked. I made it by with a lot of lot of catering more because they kept asking my customers helped me out catering orders than. And then a lot of a Chinese American students in particular in Chinese. International. Students who come to my restaurant. Started telling me. They just felt really anxious and they had a feeling of like just more isolated, and also I also do a lot of tenants advocacy work I've been in touch with CCD in. Chinatown. MOM since last year I helped him out occasionally with things at the request as I could see for myself, I mean. Koreatown didn't get hit that bad. Early, a chinatown business in Chinatown just tanked. You know at in December and January some restaurants. It was like ninety nine percent down the streets were empty. There's nobody. And then my friends from the San Gabriel Valley started reporting. The business was down in the San Gabriel Valley. And then it rolled into Korea town. So Koreatown was hit a little bit later. By declining sales and then in my restaurant to. So January usually means like a huge surge in business. And a lot of my customers are international students, not as Asian international students, but international students because my husband is also he's a French born Algerian Berber and Berbers indigent people to North Africa. So we also have a lot of European customers in African customers, and because we're North African Taco restaurant, we also have a lot of Mexican Latin next customers so very international. We hear a lot of news from everybody to because we're, I'm a owner operators on that restaurant every day that it's open. So I'm in touch with just. So many different communities. And just business was just was not picking up and beginning in January I started. Reducing, my restaurant hours drastically because it just wasn't worth it. It just wasn't worth it to old. You know just to get all that going and it was like this is not what any you know So then I started my food bank initiative I started I started my bag initiative before a stylish on nonprofit. Net Song early I. Think I met her Nebi. Rarity. A month after I had started my brown bags for all skid row initiative. Because wins, virus news broke of a mysterious virus mysterious You know that's a scare scare tactic. In China and it's highly infectious in know we live in a global village? and. Experts have been warning about pandemics for a long time and America wouldn't be prepared for one. So my first thought in January was to start my Brown Dad's for everyone initiative for skid row because in an era of pandemic, who do you want to help the most? I, I mean, who should you be healthy? It's the most vulnerable people were most exposed. Then it's going to be homeless in the House to people. And who are the poorest of the poor, the an housed I mean, it's the black residents. Elderly residents are skip Vo. So I, the Brown. Doctrines, round that for everyone initiative really took off fast because the idea was catchy. People could wrap their mind around like Paquito, Brown bag lunch. You know. So I, had neighborhood associations like four hundred members hanging. Why? Why can't all of us do like ten Brown bags? That's four thousand bomb. Gad's already

U.S. Is About to Unveil the Ugliest GDP Report Ever Recorded

"Today on the show GDP GDP stands for gross domestic product and it's basically a sum total of all of the goods and services that the US economy produces. It's often considered to be the measure of economic growth. Yep. GDP includes all the cars, an air conditioners in shoes and haircuts Uber Rides, and fish tacos and pedicures that the country is producing and buying. And so atypical GDP growth number is like two percent a year or maybe a really great year three percent. It's like soccer scores they never it never gets very. Stay pretty low and that's because the US economy is enormous. So even when a lot of things change the GDP needle doesn't budge very much at least it didn't used to. That's right. The GDP numbers came out today and for the months of April May and June that's the second quarter. The US economy grew at an annualized rate of negative thirty two point nine percent that is today's indicator negative thirty, two, point nine percent and I have to see if I saw this number I was like our economy shrank by thirty three percents I mean that is a third of our entire economy, right? I mean that can only happen a few times. It was really scary. So I called up Justin Wolfer as he is a professor of economics and public policy at the University of Michigan. And I was like wait a minute is the US economy like one third smaller? Did we just lose a third of the economy and so did we lose their economy? In. Okay. Okay. It turns out the way that Americans report the GDP. is a little more confusing than you might realize. What actually happened is in the second quarter, we produced nine and a half percent less than we did in the first quarter. You might think we should report that as a decline in GDP of nine and a half percent. Yes. What we do instead is we say if we continued to plummet at that right for an entire year. At the end of the year, how much lower would GDP? That's what thirty two point nine percents. it says if the economy kept declining at a right of nine and a half sin quarter after quarter after quarter after quarter four quarters later, a level of output would be good. Two point nine percent lists now that's unrealistic. This was the worst quarter. Probably. In American history. So. Yeah. Let's say you do not try to extrapolate for the whole year. Then what you're looking at is that in April May and June the economy shrank by about nine and a half percent from the first three months of the year, which is way better than an economy that shrink at thirty, two point nine percent. But. That number still makes April May and June. The worst three months in the history of the US economy.

Interviewing Bucks' legend Marques Johnson

"And it's our Pleasure to welcome in a two time Emmy Award winning bucks. TV analysts a five time eh, NBA All Star. Did also play at Bella and won a national championship. That's Marcus Johnson here with us on the Zach Yelp show. Marcus appreciate the time How you doing? I'm doing bills. Everything is no good. All can play good benefits in basketball family from your lips to God's ears. Can't wait to see what's gonna happen in the N B. A bubble. I saw video back in February, You were wearing a Kobe Bryant jersey and you actually threw it down in your road. I'm still dunking at 64 years old. Have you been dunking at all during the pandemic? Or was that a one time thing at 64 district Cream donuts, Bad eye. You must have been nervous, right? Well, every year on my birthday, I do a dung just to see if I could still do it. I didn't plan on doing it this year. Just chill out at my son's a SIA. All over social media. They have got to do it contingent to the one in Sydney one in with that inside, And so, of course, I did a couple of warm up to feel pretty good and And we decided absent phone brought up two tackles. Omar, you know, taco fallen. Whoever jumped over him, Aaron Gordon. Whoever dumped over way last year Next year I'll be 65. That's the official retirement age. I've been retired. I'm Travis. You have to do one more 65 years old. I gotta pay the bed after that. I don't blame you. I don't. I can't even dunk right now. I can't imagine being able to dunk when you're in your sixties. Marcus Johnson here with us on the show. When we look at this MBA restart. We know that the Bucks are the best team in the league. From a record standpoint right now they're going to be the number one seed in the Eastern Conference. The's eight games inside of the bubble. What do you look for out of them where they could really ease themselves back into playing shape? The annex a great question. I was just kind of pondering that looking at the books. Play that scrimmage against neworleans the other night and You know, I just don't think that teams should put too much into the eight. Feeding games. It's a gradual buildup. You want to be planned your best basketball. Obviously when, when the playoffs start. This is such a weird. Praise the different type of experiment. Probably guys. And so, um, you know, see positives from the brother. I've seen not good things about in terms of Kind of fighting since, um, some difficulties against the product in here tonight, but, you know the season games Because boom Jose lost compete. He's gonna want these guys to come out and and just so effort show competitive competitiveness from Paris. But I'm not sure about the ones. The won and lost record is important. At this stage of the game. It's all about kind of a slow, gradual buildup. I've been exploding wants to play all secure here. When you look at the team from last year to this year. What do you see is the biggest difference as they even got better from what they were last year, which was impressive. Well, I mean, ways that it rest values that they're so what he has done that He's given Chris Middleton a breather at defense. Can't Chris I was just looking up Christian defensive record 107th overall, 22nd ranked small forward LeBron and collide As I said at the top. But Chris doesn't have to get all that energy trying to beat this Great three and the win. Clare and I could focus on his office and I was a result becomes one of seven or eight guys who was Trying to suit you both 20% from the three point line, stick to the set plus from the field and monitor it from the people that I think a 20 point today. Yes, I think that's direct benefit to Chris Middleton. Eric Bledsoe also, let's not forget him, Master. He struggle big time last couple of years in the playoffs and honestly, stuff a big farm of the playoffs. Uh, this year, he seemed to be a lot more comfortable in his basketball scared now. It is kind of getting a late start based on tested positive and them in quarantine and all that stuff. How quickly he could kind of get back into a rhythm and flow going to be a big difference. But today I think this team has gotten even better, but local tradition of Robin Has really been a great great move. But John forced our president breaking Robin Lopez, and now we've got two bent beak gets standings and leave so I think the defense has been even better than the great detective team from last season. Marcus Johnson here with us it Zaki help show on CBS Sports radio doing a little bubble breakdown on the Milwaukee butts nationally. The big question about Chris Middleton is. Can the Bucks win it all with him? Be in the Bucks. Second best player. He's a two time All Star. Give me the local feel on that. Our people still concerned locally about Middleton be in that number to peace and winning the championship this year. Right here is where you go. I could go to a barber shop in the hold of the brothers give Ah, little about depended on Chris have the huge games but In terms of inside basketball people, people that have watched Chris closely like myself. I really believe that Chris, it's all about his confident being an all Star to the second consecutive D up really? Helps his belief in himself as being one of the elite players in the league and kept in one of the shooters in the league. And you couple that with the fact that he comes back, he's getting guns for arms and get this definition I've never seen before. His body status. Probably way dog looks really good, really in great shape of the Kalpoe talked about his explosion and bounciness coming back after the four months off was really, really surprised. So he's really putting the work that during this time off to come back and make himself I've been so on. But with president mentally I think that way you get tomato last year, the average with just 14 points in the field, and he left. How Laurie, pending for a big cheque of those minutes in that six game lost to the crap. You have to be enough to love. So you've got a lot to prove, but I think Based on what I'm looking at changes of his body where he is physically brave is right. But I think he's ready to make that statement. When I look at the Eastern Conference, I really do fully expect Milwaukee. To get to the finals. They were in that one seed spot last year did not get there When you look at the Eastern Conference this year, who's the biggest challenger for the Bucks when the season resumes tomorrow night? It's really interesting. You get him some. I think three really legitimate. Even the Miami that mix also, you can't count out exposure and then the butler as your lead gap, but I think there's still a little bit godly hero of none. And guys like that. And then he began by making just a little bit young and that, Betty, but I really believe that Celtics man. I mean, people talk about the Raptors, who I respect about. Nick Norris is a great coach. Brad Stevens was great, but one through four in terms of scoring and issues and problems. You know Jason Taylor planted Kemba Walker is the number one option. That's two through four group these guys to produce and I think about taking on like the game, and that's the most since that Golden State a couple of years ago, but most just like second most 1995 in terms of looking for and then when Gordon Hayward is your fourth option, going going home. What is your fourth option? And then we talk about a container my greatest been, but then this Dylan Brown watching his footwork. Watching the lip bruised stands the finishes in traffic. He's a guy that could be a real problem for team like the book had been. The wild card would be market smart. Distant Jabba, even though Marcus Smart Sixthree export out of 16 11 Marcus Smart office of players and we know how much she just underneath their skin. And so he's a guy that has given me honest as much trouble as anybody scoring effectively and officially against it, So I said that and then the two big catch I mean the pick and roll for five hours straight that Boston life's run. Those two guys found business cancer, pounded it inside a greatjob getting into the paint and score of them that I'm not gonna puke my shot and roll that movies have private medical himself. I really believe that Celtics to me that they're not deed. I think both those four score that they have been a lot of pressure on the Milwaukee ways that do the Middleton. To defend at a high level every night in order to be a minute in a series.
