Early signing day: Latest on the nation's top 25 college football recruits

"It's signing day part one in college football with the early signing period. now which. I'm sure coaches love because they championship games and bowl games. All that other stuff. It is obviously been a very busy time for the uc coaching staff. And a big reason why is putting together a twenty three players signing class or recruiting class. I should say for the the class of two thousand and twenty one during the early signing period we are obviously huge fans of bear journal. Dot com chad. Brendel comes on this show all the time. He'll be with us tomorrow at three forty five but because it is sunday i wanted to bring in brent young who also covers. Uc's sports and pretty heavy recruiting emphasis for bearcat journal dot com. He is on twitter at. Excuse me at be young sports and He's with us this afternoon. I appreciate the time. What should i what what stands out most about this. This particular group of players the bearcats have inked You know what really stands out to me. The most i often travel on. It's just kind of the debt that that numerous positions the the high level of talent. It might not have the the top players like you know. You have last year with with prater and jean thomas and jane thompson. The four stars really really kind of flooding the top of the list. But what was really shown and this one is just the death and the amount of talent that they're able to bring in not really clear that you would expect kind of just be headliners for each class but just the amount of players that are highly rated at each physician. You're going to have numerous players. They're going to have big impact next year special teams but more further down the line right. Give me one or two players. That if i look at this bunch and i'm trying to find a kid who's gonna make an immediate impact year one or two stands out. You don't have to go with i. Brian threats i think first off. He's one of the seven early enroll. East coming in is going to be a player out of you. Know w kaufmann there and the clubs. They're gonna come in and be a player that wants to get on the field no matter what so. You're going to see him on special teams quite a lot. You're going to see him trying really find his role on the defensive side. You know obviously defense is going to have a humorous players that are going to have to be funneled out and figured out who's going to be replacing all the seniors that are currently on the roster. So yeah i think threats comes in. He has a knack for the ball defensively. He has the ability to make big plays. You know you play offense as well as the high school level but really defensively special teams where. I'm expecting him to kind of have almost an immediate impact and then outside of that You know give me. Give me an office alive because it seems. Recently we have causes there possibly had numerous true freshman. Kind break that that that you know. Talk to on the depth chart. And i think that you look at a player like luke collins where who could step in at the tackle position is one of the better fruits that program history for the bearcats. And i think he's gonna have a chance to really kinda shy know now. Land is gonna have a chance to really shine but and then of course you look at the depth as i've constantly mentioned it's going to be hard for some of these players really crack the rotation because now you see we've been able to turn you know one as one bs and constant we have players available at each position. So really specialties. Would be the place to watch out for. Maybe i'd a toxic to watch out for who could have an impact on kickoff teams kickoff return team things of that sort. There are seven kids from the greater cincinnati area around up the kids from from From from from this class from the greater cincinnati area. yeah. I talked about Gmc defensive player of the year. It of seems like that's been that the bearcats have been able to do is bring in big time defensive players from the great cincinnati area and that first off. He has a fantastic a phenomenal nickname. And it's the godfather dante. I mean better. Carry that with him and he'd better have it all the way throughout his playing career. Whether it is in the nfl anywhere he goes. Dante corleones the godfather of course from rain high school. He's going to be a cog in the middle. You shake his hand and he just completely engulfs your hand. It makes you feel small just a bowling ball of a player. And he kinda of exact situation as i say of the death i mean. He's he's the second lowest rated player in this entire recruiting class. But you've accused. Gmc defensive player of the year. you get sacks. he's going to be a big shopper. Upfront i mean forced. You gotta mentioned the land fickle. That really great story about him is is of course he. He sat down at the dinner table with his father. And he said you know data. I think i'm gonna be a bearcat and and we've said no. I don't accept that i need a little bit more. You know force behind that. And that's you know he said okay came back days later and i'm sure he fought as much force as possible and You know land is going to be a player. That i think is surprised. Because he's got the talent that his dad has of leeward hours another great flare out of princeton. I mean you just keep on going up and down the list and then of course you know you got ice. Jarman is a good outside player. And i already talked about mouth glenn. This is just going to be another one of those. The state of cincinnati is what they call it and and keeping hometown heroes around the greater cincinnati area. They're all gonna big impact on the team. All right look. I'm not gonna ask you to be an expert on every recruiting class in the country but there are folks at twenty. Four seven are relentless. Put this class up against other competitors in the put this class up against their competitors among a group of five schools. And then tell me where would stack up or how would stack up to even some of the schools that we frequently talk about them. Trying to recruit among power five schools. Right you know first off forty second in the country. You might know that at that and think okay. That seems like a high number but you break it down. This is pop. G five recruiting class top class in the afc. You know an average of eighty five point one that is second behind what last year. The eighty five point three Just just the amount of average ratings throughout the entire class you know the groups that break higher than what auburn has brought in this year. What virginia tech has brought in what you know an iowa state who is magically better than the bearcats in the college football playoff hole which. I'm sure you've completely broke down but higher than in iowa state hires than a ucla arizona state tcu. So you know there was about twenty power five twenty to twenty five power. Five software says up bearcats actually had a higher national rank. Nance so you're looking at you. Know one of the best britain the best group of five but one of the better entire classes and the and the nation he look at next year. Obviously a really early start but this is a fantastic roof. And they're going to be you know like i said it's going to be a couple years down the line. You're gonna start calling out these players by name and say wow. This is a big time player from that twenty. Twenty one

So will Howard was getting The starting assignment at TCU TC just coming off the win in Austin by Adduce knocking off Texas So the line was 9.5 right. I told Brad Powers. The team rushed for 1 72 so still didn't even hit 300 yards Total offense as opposed to, you know, 3 40 for TCU. But they came up with the big plays. And that's something about Kansas State as a very disciplined team, and they find ways to make plays, and they did just that. Growing Your Photo Business with Dixie Dixon

"Able to welcome back to another episode of this week in photo I'm your host. Frederik. Van Johnson today I have the honour and pleasure of sitting down with the illustrious Nikon shooting. Dixie Dixon, she talked about world. He's got he's working on what letter here we're GonNa talk about Nikon and all that good stuff dixie welcome to the show. Are you doing amazing thanks so much for that great intro I. Appreciate it. It's all true. It's all. You're awesome. I'm excited to be here today and chat with you. Cool. Well, let's talk about stuff. So you know we've just you know full disclosure you and I did an interview before over on the sky loon behind the scene podcast that I also host but I wanted to invite you onto this show is well because I want to. kind of slightly different direction and. Introduce you to this week and photo audience as well as the behind the scene audience if you subscribe to behind the scene search for it and go subscribe to that one too. So Yeah. Good stuff. Who is Dixie Dixon? Ukraine. So I've seen your name in fact. I. was just doing a livestream with a friend of mine who's also a Nikon shooter and I said I gotta go I. GotTa Hang Up because I'm getting ready to talk to Dixie Dixon and he's like I was like, have you heard of Dixie Dixon? He's like Have I heard of Dixie Dixon. It's like, have you heard of Prince? So. Tell us how did you get from where you were to being kind of a household name in the in the photography world? I appreciate that so much. Gosh it's been a really crazy adventure. I've had photography jobs. So I started out shooting the cheesy little league pictures shot with film actually was the Nikon F G camera, and so we'd be doing all those cheesy soccer ball like posing with a soccer balls and Just, the team photos and stuff like that, and then I ended up joining the yearbook staff and my image ended up making the cover of the yearbook. So for me, it was like a way to get out of my shell a little bit. I'm very much a sort of an introvert. So it was sort of felt rebellious and helped me get to know people and communicate and have fun and so that for me was like a moment. Wow maybe I could actually do this for a living. So I ended up going off to college I would have loved to majored in photography, but I really thought. Maybe I should figure out the business so I can actually figure out how to make a living doing this. So I ended up studying. Entrepreneurship at TCU and fell in love with the business side and then I ended up studying abroad with a world renowned fashion photographer I literally googled fashion photography study. Abroad. And there was one program through Syracuse University. So I got to go and study with Jeff Licata and listen over in London and Prague and do my first big fashion shoot, and that is when I really fell in love with the fashion photography side of things. So yeah, it's fun adventure I felt like it was yesterday but it's It's crazy how fast time flies and I got a job sheeting TV show and it just all came together. I have so many questions like I'm I'm curious how it works from. A lot of a lot of the twitter audience. Sure as the same question like the. One one path to success as a photographer seems to be fashion right? You got to be a fashion slash commercial photographer. You gotta be that person walking on said and you're in charge and you know the House music stumping in the background and models are doing their thing. There's a wind machine. Blowing. And somebody's up there like stevie nicks with the white thing. So how do you? How do you get there like what's what's the path from leaving school in entrepreneurship going through the internship and seeing how it's done from behind the scenes to building a brand like your brand and being sponsored and representing brands like Nikon? Yes. So it's been I always feel like as an entrepreneur you think you're just GonNa, go a nice gradual progression upward, but it's like. It's an interesting. It's an interesting journey if you will. There's ups and downs along the way. I. Mean my first few years I was shooting everything I was shooting weddings and portrait's and product. If anyone called me to do a shoot I knew how to do it. I said Yes to almost everything yeah. Just to just to pay the bills and whatnot so I ended up up to different websites My fashion website and then my commercial website I mean my wedding website and portrait website. So basically, when people would reach out and they wanted portraits, weddings, I was sent him to that website, and then all the fashioned stuff on my fashioned website was all three work that I had shocked my portfolio. So ultimately, you have to show the type of work that you WANNA be shooting. So I was wanting to shoot the fashion work so you have. To, go out and shoot that work, and then you're gonNA, eventually start attracting those type of clients. So then I started shooting for modeling agencies, they would do like paid portfolio shoots for their models. It started out as free portfolio shoots and then they ended up paying me to shoot their models for awhile and do that quite a lot and then that led to like two boutiques and showing them my work and ask him if I could collaborate.

Breaking Down Bracketology

"I do WanNa flip the page to Rica's point some teams. That have worked very hard to get to this point. We've got eleven teams. Charlie that have punched their ticket so far to go dancing any surprises for you in the ache you I think we have one out. West correct so In the last couple of days of the West Coast Conference Tournament Portland is your winner. And they will now go to the tournament. they upset didn't zag in the semifinals and they will catch a little bit of. Portland's game yesterday in the championship when I flew into Vegas and they're upset of of Gonzaga disrupted. That's the surprise. It's SORTA disrupted the bubble a little bit because when you when you take it to my Portland who was not going to make it as an at large but Gonzaga certainly is well now the WC goes from having one team in the field to two teams in the field. Well he can only still sixty four teams so someone has to come out of the field to accommodate Portland's entrance and that affects the at large teams on the bubble and in the case of my bracket that not Boston College. Back out of the field. Who just a day earlier had slid into the field because there was another loss by someone else so everything with this in the championship weeks at circumstances everything affects something else because it's a numbers game. It's a sixty fourteen field no matter how you slice it so going forward and these next few days. We've got some other tournaments that could affect that in the same way and I mentioned this going back a week or so ago that their watch out for the bids steelers because there are certain mid majors that we know we're going to be in the field. They've earned the right to be in. The field is at large teams if they don't also go in there if they don't go in AH automatic qualifiers by winning their tournament. Well then that's an extra team that we didn't account for and brackets and that's an extra team now that the committee has to put into the field. That's one less team that can make it from some of these bubble team. So yeah the the big upset so far has been in the West Coast Conference in Gonzaga. Not Winning it and we've got some more to look forward to. The MAC happens to be one of those tournaments where there's not going to be. Any fans will central Michigan won the league pretty decisively. This year is a top twenty. Rpi team and most assuredly will make the field but now that tournament played before no one could be one of those that affects how the bubble teams go to central Michigan. Does it also come on? Come out on top in the tournament So that's that's certainly one for fans to watch as we go forward and you're GONNA have to watch it on TV because you're not gonna be able to buy it you're watching on TV though you will hear my voice. I'm on the call on Saturday for the championship. And the more reason to tune in now on the game and you can't get into the arena so the ratings should be sky high. Now it's via going okay. So I want to over to the big twelve. Charlie would where I know actually had a chance to call some big twelve games this year and I know. Tcu In particular was a team that was really making a push. I believe there in the field as it stands right now but I was state actually Jones. Who's a certified buck gator? They upset Baylor over the weekend which was a huge deal. I did a double take when I got the alert. Baylor is bailer their legitimacy. It probably doesn't change anything for them. But what does it do for Iowa State? Well I always stayed. I had as a tendency leading into that game and and it pushed him to a nine. And what that does is it's security. It's cushion because of the ten seed. Maybe the committee views them a little differently. Not Quite not quite at that level so that he's talking about eleven seed. Well that's a vulnerable team to some of the upset potential. We just talked about so what that win for Iowa State. I think is put to rest any question that they'd be in the field although I think there was a big one anyway but it but it certainly nails it down and they no longer would have. I don't think any anxious moments watching the selection show on Monday Now it's just GonNa be a matter of where do they go? And whom do they play? But I think that's what did for for I would say for sure and it would what it did do for. Baylor though while not it's not gonNA knock him out of a one seed it. Does maybe raise some questions. I personally didn't think that there was anything to worry about with. Frankly there weren't a lot of flaws there but the big twelve not not one of the better leagues in the country this year of the power. Five Leagues I think it's probably fifth and they haven't been severely tested in a while and I always say certainly did that and the it might raise some question marks about Baylor going forward. I think they can answer any of those questions in the big twelve tournament because I was sneaking suspicion. They're going to come out with a little extra in that game and it could be ugly for the other. Big Twelve teams In the big twelve tournament but that said it does it. It shows little vulnerability that I didn't think Baylor had and that makes it a little more intrigued when we get to the tournament. Time itself I agree with you one hundred percent. I know look at the box. Were trying to figure out what the deal was. And nothing really was like crazy glaring. But I do think you're right. I know a ton of folks are going to be studying that tape to see what I was able to do right well that was able to watch some of that game and when I did was really slow the Temple. They hope to threes in the second half. They made more threes than they made. Twos in the game and the believer and it was and it was so slow paced and Baylor never found a rhythm that they they say clog everything inside the Lauren Cox had almost no room to move it. Kinda dared the Baylor shooters to shoot and they just had one of those games where they weren't making shots so maybe at least down a blueprint for some other teams as to how to at least approach Valer Ago You mentioned as an example Yukon being a number two seed and I know over the past few years you have seen to have had all these regional conferences in such a favorable area. I think at the Albany region that they mostly have been seated but this year they would be projected number two in the Portland region and I think as much as we talk about Yukon not being the same Yukon is as pass. There's still a very good basketball team. Won thirty nine. Oh in their conference over these last few years in the American and I think that having them with the possibility of travel really makes this team look a little different because they aren't the same team as years pass. Tell us a little bit about how that could affect their performance. Assuming they make the sweet sixteen you're right and Seven out of the last eight years. They've either played in Albany. Bridge for for Kingston Rhode Island. So they they have not had to get on an airplane until the final four in seven out of those those eight years. But let's let's be honest earned it ju- every one of those years with the possible exception of last year because they were the best team in the country in those years too so and when when cities bid for these regionals it just so happened that that all those years those particular low cows bid and got regionals to be able to host. And you can't happen to be close so this year. Those regionals are don't exist. There is no Albany. There is no Kingston. There is no bridgeport and no matter what was going to have to get on an airplane. And you're right. I think it will look a little bit. Different seeing a yukon in a faraway place. I don't think it's going to impact on the whole Locke. Though to be honest I think the people that are bothered by the possibility of uconn going West are the players and the coaching staff. Everything I've heard from them is like. Hey we'll bring it on. We'll play wherever we'll play whomever we'RE NOT THAT CONCERNED ABOUT. Gino's been been pretty adamantly over the years but this year when the subject's soon kinda shrug your shoulders. Look I you know. I don't have any control over it and we'll go play and it will do what we do and I think he said the other night after the the American championship game. We'll do what we do. I hope I think That's sort of the philosophy that they're gonNA take me. Maybe their fans aren't happy and maybe people who who look at the tournament and see certain things as they view them. Unfair that a team that is fifth overall. My take would be the one that has to travel. Based on the fact that other teams can can drive to the region. So we'll get into the reason why you would be going to Portland is very simply that The NC Double A. Would prefer as much as possible that teams that can drive rather than fly two games that they're gonNA play It's written right in the procedures principles of putting the bracket together that mode of transportation distance from campus. Things that they consider will this year Louisville can drive the Fort Wayne Regional? Nc State can drive to the Greenville regional. So if you assume that those are those are two of the other number number two seeds. Then they're going to be plotted in those regions and then the other one being Stanford and Stanford mashed up with Oregon would would also violate one of the principles of putting the bracket together and they They try to keep teams seeded on the top four lines from the same conference separate. So they're so they're in different regions. They wouldn't even meet until the final four now. In this case the fact twelve might have five teams in top sixteen making that impossible but in years past when that's happened the committee's not put one a one and a two. They've put fit when a four again. So it's highly highly unlikely that Oregon at Stanford Movie Place Together which only leaves one region left for Yukon to go to which is Portland matched up with. Oregon is the one in the two. So that's the why behind it and I think we talked about the the what or in the case of I think the Yukon players coaches the. So what I don't know that they that it matters to them very much but it does create an interesting conversation around how the tournament is bracketed. And some of these rules. That maybe fans aren't quite as aware of in the the head-scratching that I get from from fans and social media. Say Well if you cons five. They should be matched up with the number four overall team based on the curve. And that's Maryland so they should be going to Fort Wayne. Well we don't ever. The S curve is used to plot the teams in the tournament. But it's not used strictly to place them in these numerical matchups one in eight go together. Two and seven go together. It's never worked that way. It doesn't work that way in the men's tournament. The committee will try to do that as much as possible. That's the goal. But if you've got these graphical instances at hand as well then there there's other ways to balance the bracket and. That's I think what's going to happen. This year with

Is Duke Done? A Season of NCAA Basketball Surprises

"Myron. I think the last time we spoke. I was at Cameron Indoor Stadium asking You what you thought about Zion Williamson. That was the last time and now Zion's gone and things haven't been as good for college basketball since he left. Myron Medcalf is a senior college basketball reporter for ESPN. Men's college basketball has been having a pretty weird season. Can you explain to us sort of the state of things and why some of the usually omnipresent contenders your dukes your? Unc's Kentucky aren't even in the top five while it's a meeting in a year like this anybody who tells you that they know exactly what's going to happen in March. They're lying because there was no one no expert. That understands kind of what's happened so far. It's just been a wild year but I think you can look at some of the things that transpired Really at the start of the season. I think the James Wiseman suspension by the answer. Aa For twelve games after being ruled ineligible. You have a Memphis team that I think had a chance to be much better if he sticks around. Lamelo ball who if he follows the traditional track and goes to a UCLA USC that changes the spotlight on those programs as well But instead you have a lot of the blue blood teams that don't have the lottery level talent that they had a year ago. Duke is still a top ten level team but they don't have anyone close To a Zaylon you'd have a team like Gonzaga that had to lottery picks last year. They got some good players. Nothing like that so the the powerhouse teams are just really good team which has closed the gap so now a San Diego State with the Malachi Flint and against double team Malachi for three huge three by malachite lend. That's a really good team. Competing for number one see the Dayton with an ob top suddenly was one of the best teams in America. And I think it's because you just don't have the same concentration of talent we're accustomed to seeing with your Kentucky's in Dukes. Then you'RE K. Use Marin what is it like covering a season like this where there are really clear favorites and no one seems to have any idea. What's going on this year? You just don't really know who to chase like. You don't know who to say okay. That's the team to watch. Because they're really good. It just feels like a pretty fragile college basketball scene which is great for the tournament for everything. We didn't have in college basketball this year in terms of no established kind of powerhouse team. I think we're going to see the benefits of it. Come into double A. Tournament. Time when we could have one of the craziest craziest. March madness is we've ever had so. Let's talk about Duke. Quit even when dukes not great? We're still going to talk about Dick. Because it's really interesting. Myron how much struggled on Saturday they lost to Virginia Virginia wins. That look the three point line. Just couldn't connect before that game. They were ranked seventh. But I imagine they could go down even further now right. Yeah I mean this is a team that I think will will fall in the rankings. Duke has run into some teams who put on their Superman capes in the last couple of games. And that's change things you have. Nc State which made sixty one percent of its threes and that loss A week ago wake forest mixed fifty four percent of its threes. These things those teams had done before they phase Duke and Virginia really as just a team on the rise So I think duke got caught in kind of a weird gauntlet there but trae Jones has been sort of their closer whereas a year ago you could go to RJ bear. You could go to Cam Reddish you could go on. And now they're a bit more one dimensional They're much closer to what you see. Maybe in a typical season where they're right there with Louisville and Florida state and Virginia and the other teams at the top of the ACC. But they don't have a guy who's GonNa carry them to the top of the League and just help them separate. That's just not enough talent in college basketball for really any team to do that. But especially in the league like the Agency. So you're in Kansas right now in Kansas. The number one team. You were there to watch them. Play Kansas State and it was a right because these two teams Fighting literally fighting back in January Shit and now the benches inc just unnecessary. That's not good. This is Paul. This is bad this is but on Saturday night myron. They shook hands before the tip off in. Kansas came away with the victory. What did you make of the number team in their performance? Well I I'm just glad nobody fought again because that that would have been bad Glad to have that moment before the game I will say. I've never been to a regular basketball game outside of the NCAA tournament that had as much security as that game. Had I mean they were everywhere about? I'm glad there was an incident. I I think Kansas is sort of the perfect team in a year like this. Do they have a lottery pick? No but they've got this really balanced group of guys who are pretty good offensively. They've been pretty efficient team and they got two guys who win they're together. They're hard to stop. It's Dotson In Gaza Buki who when they're on the floor together. Kansas made about sixty percent of his shots inside the art. Their opponents have made about forty one percent of their shots inside the three point line. That's the story right there when those two guys are together. Kansas is certainly the best team in America. But you also look at them and go. Are they one bad night from Abu? Koa from struggling. He was hurt part of the game on Saturday against the bad Kansas state team boss feeds it in bounced past as a group. Six to shoot you back down spits travels this is the shot ultimately but he rolled his ankle. Oh this is good has approved. He is clutching his right foot so Kansas is good. But like a lot of teams there. One bad moment badge stretch away from being right there with everybody else. Well now. It seems like Kansas is going to run away with the big twelve after Baylor who was ranked number two going into the weekend got upset by. Tcu How bad was this for Baylor? It's always interesting right. Like Baylor won every game but one for like two months straight and now all of a sudden last week I think a lot of people are panicking and that happens to a team. Like Baylor which doesn't have the brand recognition of Duke or Kentucky or a Kansas. So in hard times. I think we may be overemphasized Some of their struggles. I think you obviously don't want to continue losing and losing to a team like Tcu is not good For them but this is a team that again played a tissue team that did things that they haven't done in the past made forty five percent of the threes on Saturday against Baylor. They made thirty three percent of their shots from three point. Line before that so that can be more of an anomaly. I think Baylor overall though is one of the best defensive teams in America made the best defensive team not named Kansas. So that's GONNA keep them in every game that they play well one team. That's right up there with Kansas and Baylor is Gonzaga perennial contenders They did lose to. Byu about a week ago but they're still considered favorites to win the WCTC. How good is this Gonzaga team? I think they're really really good me now like I think they're amazing. I just think this is a year where because everyone has been sort of even you get one loss and all of a sudden. Gonzaga gets the whole. You haven't played anybody. And why are you losing you know in the West Coast Conference and I think that's unfair? Byu was a really good team like Byu's go into selection Sunday with maybe a five or six seed. Maybe even better so. There's nothing wrong with losing a road game in that environment to a good team. They have the number one offense in America a flea Petra. Sav is one of the best young players Indian tire country. We would know what mark few the head coach can do. And they've got two losses all year. I think that is one of the best teams in America and I think will prove it wants double a. Tournament starts so most of the rankings have some combination of Kansas Baylor in Gonzaga in the top. Three we'll see how this weekend changes that but after that myron gets pretty interesting. I'm you've got Dayton San Diego state. Did you see that coming up before the season began out like I wish I could lie and say I did? I wish I could be that dude. It was like yeah. I called San Diego State back in October in Dayton. But I didn't I mean like ob top and a Dayton is suddenly this lottery pig. And I don't think anybody saw that Common Dayton on Friday against Davidson Mia. Think about this number. They may ninety six percent of their shots inside the three point. Line Ninety six percent like I don't care if you're playing a high school junior Varsity Team. That's really difficult to do in Dayton. Did that and not only did they do it. They've been doing it Throughout the season just really inefficient offensive team in San Diego State. A team that lost its first game about a week and a half ago. The they've been role as well in their line of people who will say San Diego State doesn't play the competition that the other top teams have faced in college basketball. That's not true. They beat the. Byu Team that just beacons Aga- they beat Creighton. Which I think is the surprise of college basketball naked win at all by thirty one points and they beat Iowa another solid team another Aa tournament team by ten points so the best teams that were thrown at San Diego State. They won those games now. They did lose the UNLV Week ago but beyond that there have been a really really good team and I think in a year like this again. You're not going to run into a team with two lottery. Picks it feels like they can make Iran as well both San Diego state ending

"From TCU to get to UCLA. I think it's a it's a it's a step up for from TCU and a sense. But it's also a great opportunity for UCLA to get a fundamentally sound coats coach who's going to focus on the defensive side of the ball, obviously recruiting something he'll have to bring back to UCLA after the years of of having a program down a little bit. But I wanna say bounds. I think Jamie Dixon, is is right for Nick new step. And I think UCLA without finding the superstar so to speak and gets you use lightly. Head coach to run their program. Teaming Dixon's is a really good one is fundamentally do it. Right. I'm a big Jamie Dixon fan. I mean, I I always have been so close for years in the big east with a scrappy team that won thirty games. A lot matter fact is I seven years at Pitt. He had one hundred eighty eight wins which tied and NCWA record. For most wins by head coach seven years. Into their courage Dickson is a very good coach having said that my answers out of they wipe while I do think it's good for him. They'll get paid while blah, blah. I'm not so sure that Brune fans gonna love this is already a little happy. That's that's in there. Jamie while he's a borderline great coach great. But he's really good. I don't know Jamie's going to excite them enough to to get that ripple go, and I don't know that that's going to really excite the recruits players that UCLA fans wanna watch. Here's the thing. He I think Jamie Dixon is a lot. Like, Tony Bennett is he doesn't need the or five star guys in order to create a winning program. What they need right now. It's.

"A couple of all American candidates there as well. As it might number three rated pass the but TCU comes in with my number nine rated pass St. now, I'm a guy that likes defense. So I I'm going to enjoy this game. I think it will be a lower scoring game. But I think the TCU with coach Patterson this being his seventeenth bowl versus Wilcox. First bowl game. TCU's taken on the tougher schedule. They've taken that nine bowl teams this year cows only taken on five and yet in the fact that TCU at the end of the year, you know, it's looks like a lost season for them. Right. There were four and six they needed to win their last two games. Just to get to a bowl. They got that. Done. Well, they need to win this game to avoid losing season. And I think they can get that done. I like the frogs in this one, and I'll take the one point as an underdog here bonus question as we leave you feel more points scored Alabama. Oh, scoring more points at halftime versus Oklahoma or total points in that cow TCU game. I'm gonna go with over the Alabama first-half polo against Oklahoma. So. And then like I said, I'm going to joy watching TCU Cal. But that's a great question. Peter I again because we look at it. What I what is what do you think? I mean, what is that over and under for Oklahoma Alabama right now it has to be from ably close to what seventy eight or eighty if I'm not mistaken. Yeah. Believe it's seventy seven and a half. So that sounds reasonable. Unreal. Well, hey, we're looking forward to enjoy your mustache while you still have it. Remember, if it was such a great one-sided bet that Phil loses. It he has to shave his moustache. If I lose nothing happened. So this is my favorite of all time here on the campus compensation podcast. You talk about can't lose bets. There you go there. It is Phil still. Hey, happy holidays to you, my friend. We will talk to you after Christmas. All right. Sounds great..

"We go to TCU with a pick them you like the horned frogs. This is a team. I don't think I've had picked right all year. I I really don't. And they're facing a Cal team. That obviously is a great defense the over under in this game only thirty nine and a half. Yeah. The over under make sense for the game at thirty nine and a half because you have two very good defenses into clearly below average offenses now TCU is down to their third string quarterback, which is not a good thing. But I think it was two years ago. They went into the game with a third string quarterback and ended up winning their bowl game. So it was a positive then it was Brian Cole house and making his first start and he had a pretty good game against Oregon, especially in the second half. And they came back and won the game. So Patterson's pretty good at developing backup quarterbacks number for the game. And I think you'll see Michael Collins have himself a good game here at the QB spot. Now as mentioned neither offenses over the explosive in both. Great defenses. Cal gets a lot of tackles for loss. They've got the linebacking corps. They only give up three point five yards per carry. But TCU's defense just as good in fact, TCU defense took on better offenses on the course of the year. So the fact that the numbers are close shows TC rates the edge there you look at them up front. I give TC Deitch and the defensive line. I like the fact that this is Patterson seventeenth bowl game versus the first for Wilcox's ahead, man. TCU's played the tougher schedule. It took on seven bowl teams this year and Cal only took on five bowl teams. So an advantage there. Also get the advantage like running back to TCU with their. Yes. Anderson think he's a little bit more explosive in cal- brings to the table at the running back position. Like the receiving core. The TCU has give them the advantage there. And as mentioned, I think that Michael calls step in and do good job at the quarterback spot for this one. So had it all up. I just think TCU's the better overall team taking on the tougher schedule. You. The game at pick them. And remember TC was four and six they had a win their last two games to get to a bowl they'd beat Baylor on the road. They beat Oklahoma state at home. Now they need to get a win to avoid the losing season. So I think they've got a little bit more of an urgency to them. Then does a Cal team that very happy to get to a bowl game this year. Interesting. I've never heard that angle winning your last two kind of momentum. So to speak if you will and just because that is the key to these bowl games who's who's there who's there to play football versus who's just going through the motions. "That old Thomas is not, I guess, all in if you will, during the practice week, as long as he's all in balling out on Sunday, you'll take that. Eight, four, four, zero, four, rich number two dollars. Take another phone call here on the program. Let's go to Steven, Chicago, speaking of Chicago, what's going on? Steve. Thanks for calling. What's on your mind wanted to bring two quick points on the LA Rams really put before that. I got a point four, nine codeine, Mike delta. I think begin Irish with weak, and I think in books they're gonna w they're going five and all this weekend, the Irish getting a w against Stanford. Yeah, we really haven't talked about those college games yet. Really. I mean, Stanford and Notre Dame with Tariq, oh, on the call and Ohio State and Penn State with Fowler on the call. By the way, they are tights, tight friends who were both at my wedding. And by the way, Fowler is the guest on the podcast with me in Susie this week, did you did you did Steve even asked a question yet? Mike, Mike, what are you doing is just making a point of like, go Irish, and then he was going to ask, what does she call Sobat calls back Steve. Sorry about that. Do I need to be like francesa and make a waving motion? No, let's do it. That's an accident. Steph's fallback giving. He's giving you a little shoutout right there man, like you say you're off the coating right. Lingering. I even Chicago's call him back. I mean, we have other phone calls. I'm trista Tana happy. But in terms of Ohio State and Penn State, man, oh, man, Duane Haskins. This is his biggest road start his biggest road performance so far was showing up in the big house coming off the bench AT Barrett getting hurt last year and a TCU game. Fowler points this out again in the podcast chat that I have, which who's a podcast one that. It was kind of like a home game and TCU. He said in Dallas that they were Ohio State fans everywhere. That's not going to be the case in central Pennsylvania Saturday going to be a white out and happy. Yeah. And then Notre Dame against Stanford two big college games it is. That's pretty much it. Right? Yeah, that's pretty much it. Allah bama's taking on l. s. you know arm. Sorry, it's just plain Louisiana. Yeah, they're from on is forty. Nine point favorites, the other. That's it. Yeah. That's the other two ranked teams playing to the West Virginia host that Texas Tech. Michigan's taking on the battle of my degrees this weekend, Michigan versus northwestern. That's it's on FOX's Steve back. So I read sorry there. Steve. Okay. What was on your mind? Steve? I felt bad. It's why I was just waiting floor. I figured you Cody Mike probably wouldn't have done that, but for the Ellie Rams looking at their schedule to things like like one, I don't really see them losing another game, the rest of the season. And then to just wanted to get your opinion rich on who you saw the who could be their biggest rival in the NFC in the playoffs. I think in the playoffs it would have to be Philadelphia. Right now looking at it or New Orleans. I mean, if the saints defensively can get some stops and can get some pressure, if this kid Davenport who they traded a first round pick from next year's draft can start bawling out and applying pressure long with Cam Jordan, and they put some pressure on golf and clamp down breeze in that offense can go point for point, and then there's the, you know, the heart of a champion Wentz and the eagles defensively they can maybe get a Goff off the field only two, three and outs for the Los Angeles Rams to one last night and the first drive of the entire season. That's it. So if I take a look down the line, I would think that maybe Kansas City, and that's going to be thanks for the call. Steve. See now now I wave now I got you. All right. Yeah. I mean that Kansas City game is in new is in Mexico on ESPN. How do you say wit in Spanish. Rate question. So that's on. That's on Monday night in Mexico week, eleven. No. And again, the Rams are at New Orleans suite nine. So everybody that I've just mentioned on their schedule, man. Everybody calling in from Paris is not gay. How are you, sir? I'm doing doing great Ray some great to be on..

"Brought to you by straight talk wireless, best phones best networks, no contracts, and my goodness is the return of the zone bees to college football, how 'bout Michigan, how Texas even Notre Dame been hard sock. Hawaiian kind of left for dead after looking lackluster against ball state and almost losing vandy. They should've lost vandy last week. They started playing some real football. It was. It was zombies making a return to the landscape here in week four. And I think you could even make a little bit of a case that Wisconsin is as bad as they've looked. They got the win last night and Audi is the reality is for Wisconsin that if they, they run the table, they get into the, they win the west and they go in and win a big ten title. They're going to the playoffs. Like there's these teams. That, like I said, this week is a plotline moving forward plotline week where we're figuring out more clarity and Texas and Notre Dame and Michigan. They're still in the discussion at this point, liking game of thrones or just me, and my wife just finished watching Ozark season to like it's like the third from last episode of the season doesn't necessarily end. It doesn't doesn't give you the big plot hangars or the cliffhangers and the big about plot development. And that feel like that's what this week was. You nailed it because Michigan after losing to Notre Dame, the way they did in week one, I felt, gosh, I just I don't see what the hype is about this defense and guess what they showed it. They just throttled the Brassica yesterday for Notre Dame for for Brian Kelly to pull a Nick Sabin and say, you know what? I know we're doing well, but I think we can be elite. That's what they look like with the book. In his four touchdowns Twenty-eight first-half points. They go in just take care of weak force. Fifty six, twenty seven. I think though However, I might have been most impressed with Texas in what the longhorns were able to do. Listen, if they don't fall to Maryland in early in the season. This is a team that that is flying around the football field in data care TCU yesterday. Yeah, it's it's a little bit misleading to me. We we've gone through it as we've watched these weeks progress, not all wins are the same. You know the getting getting one team that goes out. Georgia goes out and gets a win yesterday where it was. They were in control of the game, but Missouri was pesky, you know, Alabama was in control the game, but am was pesky this Texas game. I don't feel like they were necessarily dominant. They just TCU lost that game on turnovers. I, I liked the trending location, unlicensed ragging part, but isn't that part of what Texas is trying to be. I know hermit was the offensive minded. I, but you look at the recruiting classes that he had in Austin. It's almost seemed like they shifted towards where they really made hay was not really at the quarterback position and ailing eligible was decent two hundred fifty yards passing, but defensively that was the big change. It's like, okay, it's TCU a sloppy team or do we give credit for the long ords yesterday Tennessee was a sloppy team against Florida. They got routed by the Gators in Knoxville because they were just flat out just irresponsible with the ball. I never felt like TCU was irresponsible for the ball to the ball. I felt like they were just they were outmanned by by Texas and coming off the heels of an emotional loss against Ohio State. The long courts caught him at just the right time. The TCU has melted down in two straight games at the third quarter TCU to me watching them last week against Ohio State TCU is got team speed all over the place that defense is throwing the kitchen. Sink in their blitz packages, but for whatever reason twice. Now, in the third quarter, they wet the bed and into a higher states credit. They capitalized on it and to the Texas longhorns credit. They were able to cap capitalize on it, but the Texas the Texas team on offense. I like what Sam is doing his trajectory, but the rushing game as weak. They only had one hundred yards between several different running backs in that game. And so it's a little bit out of balance to me. Again..

"I'm hanging out. I'm having a good time. I like four worth. You know why not? Yeah, duty chilled out. He was a Pittsburgh getting one seeds and losing in the Sweet Sixteen in pit fans wondering, fire like what the fuck, like I'm Pittsburgh like you guys. You guys have sucked forever. I'm getting you once. He's what do you want to fire me? And he goes the TCU and he makes one tournament. Now they want to put a statue up and he's like, this is great. I've found my place. I found my home. Did you ask him about Kevin's statue? Did you ask him? Did you say. Did you DVR pits games last year because I would have been great. I didn't get a chance to talk to Dixon. He was busy running, fade routes, and then practice started. That was and I had to go to get out of there because I, I actually went and got some barbecue at. I want to say I'm gonna namedrop for TCU fans, listening Heim, Heim barbecue. I think I hit him with the Heim. But there's a guy on staff. Those tour me around that was show me around cici's campus. He he had played a Pittsburgh under Dixon. He was recruited to Pitt under Dixit and then Dixon left. He stayed at Pitt played for Stalin's. Oh my God. What did he say about that? Yeah, he just looked like a maid. He looked. He looked like he had PTSD. He was just like, oh my God. He's like, you should've seen how many softball games we had. It was miserable. So here's, here's, here's my information. Dixon was a very likable guy. I, I was surprised at how much I liked him, and then I realized after going to TCU I realized I have a problem because I probably made a few Jamie Dixon jokes over over the course of my lifetime. I mean, the guy did lose in the tournament with one seeds, and it was funny and the lost of Butler in two thousand eleven all kind of never get over in the sense that like I don't know how the hell that happened. Do you remember this game when Matt Howard got the rebound yeah, they found him. Yep. Like ninety four feet away from the basket. Yes. And that's how they lost the buzzer in the second round? Yep. The buzzer team that went on to lose the national title game. So all of that said like he, I was surprised at how likable he was in like the practices. He ran all that kind of stuff. And then I realized I'm going on a very dangerous road with the state because I was never really recruit in high school. I didn't get recruited. I had coaches from like tiny schools call me and they're like, hey, you wanna play basketball here. And I was like, what schools this? They're like, we're legit school. Google us nosing in and I don't think so. I'm good. And that was pretty much my recruitment process. So it's like get tours of civility and to get, you know, just the the star treatment, it feels great. And I realized the problem with being easily bought as we famously are on this podcast and then it doesn't take much for us to to to get our loyalties. The problem with being easily bought is what happens when both sides by you then what? Because that's that's where I found myself is like I had a fit. I, I leave some you and I'm like, I'm I'm team SMU with this robbery TCU and I'm like, I don't know. And now I'm stuck. In the middle, and I've I'm into deep and I'm flying too close to the sun with this stuff, and it's dangerous and I don't know what to do. I think you gotta pull the Jason Kidd just gotta be passed. I, you know, you guys say both sides and they come to you and they say, what's? What's the answer here? Where did he say? Just got a pass. Here's a couple of passes in life..

"Some Nomsa let it slip. You know, some of his frustrations we'll get like Stefan. Marberry will be the one that calm. But like no one of of con- like Chris Weber's not talking shit about him on the air or anything like that. You know, like he just he just been able to stay like just the man forever. It's great. I, what can you say about it? Oh, and Tim Jenkin Vicenza great successor and it was a built in program. They literally Libro knew that there was a there was a time when he would get called by the double a. and he had jank vich ready to go, which was I thought it was. Genius is great SMU I like, yeah, I like I like. Everything about what they had going on. There are like the way the practice rare. The campus was incredible. I'll be honest. It was a little intimidating though. Like I'm a, you know, you've been in New York City with me Tate. I get over wound, but nice things. I don't like nice links. Did you make simple things just compare SMU to New York City? I think everyone at SMU their heads just like spun around and blew off. That's Bill. Yorker. Yeah, no kidding. But have you been like go? We have to go to a game. There is like, I don't understand how no one told me about this that it's just. There's too much money. It's like I thought like there's going to be a point, Roger. It's like what? Like a guy would just be handing out money, like wads of cash? Yeah, just like I don't know, like instead of handing out pamphlets, that's why written on like ten dollar bills, and they start handing them out the people walking on campus. It's crazy. There's so much money. Well, that's how they got in trouble. Last time. They were just bragging about paying all their players. They're just like, yeah, look at us. We're all this money in Dallas, welcome to college football, big boys, everyone's like, hey, guys, he can't stop stop bragging about paying your players. So hopefully they won't do about TCU I, I don't know much about he's yet. All right. So the next day I go to Fort Worth, and as you said, Fort Worth is very much different city than Dallas. I don't think I've been to Dallas and I've think I've been to Fort Worth before, but I've never realised until I actually like drove the, I don't know until I like older may. I dunno, it started make more sense to me. They are very distinct cities that kind of hurt me hurt my initial theory in that like SMU and TCU or necks. Each other because I thought, you know, again, living in Ohio and beaten ignorant. Also, those schools can't be that far apart. They're a little bit further apart than I realized, but then I gave it more thought, and I think that's a good thing. Because as you said it plays into like the Dallas versus the Fort Worth thing. Fort Worth is definitely very much different city TCU didn't love the campus quite as awesome campus. No, quite if I went to TCU I, I would have been like, man, this campus is great. A lot of bays brick though SMU had like the multicolored brick, so points decimal for that one. TCU has like, obviously the better like football stadium and and the the branding, you know, like the purple and the black and Saint colors. Great mascot, the horned frog, I found out that the horned frog is a real thing. I'm embarrassed to say. I didn't realize I was like an actual real life animal, but it is great, great mascot, great uniforms, great colors, all that kind of stuff. Really like their facilities. It wasn't as nice as SMU, but in a weird way, I think I liked it more because of that. Because as I said, I don't really like nice things..

"Yes. Does you see him? No, he's really good. Super gonna pins teams inside the tent. Yeah, he was. I believe, according to our friend Bill Connolly worth an extra I down per drive or something crazy. I'll take it. I'll take it really, really good that will hurt to lose. Let's go to TCU showy. Let's. Okay. TCU tenant to year ago because we are framing all of this out in the context of why we care about each team while we care about each conference. I care about TCU because TCU as the best defense in the big twelve and okay. As I said with the Texas capsule I view having defense in the big twelve as a competitive advantage because again, the conference is generally known for its defense. You have one, it helps a lot. They do lose five starters from year ago, but defense is is sort of Gary Patterson thing. Now I'm gonna. I'm gonna qualify that a little bit just by saying that has an always been his thing. Like the last couple years defenses have fallen short of expectations at TCU. But generally he's a good coach. He knows defense. I think this is going to be the best defense in the big twelve. Do you feel the same? Why think is one thousand percent is. Thing that'll think there's any doubt about that. Yeah, there's there have been times where TCU's defense hasn't been phenomenal, but by and large in a conference that is year in year out, so fun in so potent offensively and spreading teams out and playing with tempo and having Gary Patterson recruits and put so many talented players on defense into cycle. So many of them in year over year and get the results that he's gotten threatening to win, you know, ten plus games totally most years? Yeah, I still think even if he doesn't meet the expectations of his best recent defenses, they should have an incredible defense. I agree. I think I agree. And so much of that is offense is about rhythm, and I think defenses in large part. Like if you have decent coaching about effort, caring, and having, you know a decent too deep everywhere to to mitigate any injuries and Gary Patterson and his. Defensive staff every year seemed to get these players to care and to play with with enthusiasm. And I think that's huge. Absolutely. And that defense, by the way, is going to test Ohio State in week three that games, neutral, cider in Arlington, it's going to test Texas in Austin on week four. We will find out very quickly how good is defense is at least out of the chute with that being said, knowing that there are some heavy hitters on that early schedule. Mike question about TCU is on offense. All I can say right now is that I like some of the parts I don't know about the whole and a big part of why I don't know about the whole is because Sean Robinson, he's off more quarterback. I will be saying a prayer before each show this fall so that I don't call him a Sean Robinson. Okay. Well, he is a Sean RAV he is, but. That's just, you know, me and how I thought you were gonna say a prayer for cubeys, but well, of course we always do, but also gone. I'm just saying, I'm worried, you know me that is something that I might end up doing. I may just go fully shown Robinson by the end of the year, but nonetheless. I like what TCU has coming back on the whole. I think their third best team in the conference, a close third behind Texas, and you're not gonna believe this, but TCU was one of the two teams. I bet on good. I think that's a good bet. Twenty eighteen. It's. It's been crazier for all of us. I personally have been trying to focus on what's important to me and TCU just means too much to me..
