Tua Tagovailoa vs. Belichick's Defense: A Challenge

"Get into the Dolphins. Now we have to start with to Greg. I watched him last week and I see a number of very good things from him, you know, the answer the anticipatory throws is great anticipation is accurate and he's really smart and you know football IQ is through the roof when you see him, he's diagnosing what the defense is doing and the first time around you might surprise him. It's very difficult to surprise in the second or third time around very smart guy doesn't have the strongest arm in the world, but he can move around in the pocket a little bit and he's got enough Armstrong. Had a downfield but I mostly pay attention to his accuracy his anticipation in his intelligence. I think that's what would separate too from some of the other younger quarterbacks that we've seen come into the league and so it's fascinating Greg this matchup. I remember we talked about the Justin Herbert matchup Belichick's record his resume against rookie quarterbacks or even just your quarterbacks first time in so we're going to have to who was very football Savvy and has a high football iQ going against Bill Belichick who of course has the Mind against rookie quarterbacks wage. What do you make of to his game in? What do you think the Patriots will try to do on Sunday to Rattle him. I'm looking at I thought you did a great job with your Scouting Report. I thought you know what I agreed on all those points, especially, you know, I think where he shows off to me is the football like you he he sometimes he will hang on to a play a little bit too long. I think that's probably a place. Where they've been working with him, he did that a couple of times against Kansas City, you know, but largely had a feel for what's going on. He knows how to get rid of the ball. I think Chan gailey's done a real nice job with him sort of slowly bringing him along and you know, yes, everybody's going to talk about Bill Belichick and his record against rookie quarterbacks, you know, but one thing you have to keep in my practice, you know, this is this is a rookie quarterback with Brian Flores, you know next to him who's so I assume Brian all week is showing him all Patriots film and say look, this is what they're going to do to you. This is this is what we would do to everybody. These are going to be the calls whatever you see don't trust your eyes before the snap. There's always going to be somebody dropping there's going to be they're going to be doing this song. I think that's going to be a huge asset for them. I think that Ted Karras at Center is going to be a huge asset for them cuz he knows how the Patriots, you know like to pressure cuz he's been here for so long. The Patriots know his weaknesses. Teddy's a pretty good pass protector. He struggles more in the Run game. But I do think you'll see the Patriots try to try to get him to move his feet side-to-side off a little bit slow. So I think you know targeting him with some t e stunts inside and things like that might generate some pressure. But yeah, I think I think that too is pretty good job to see if guys like DeVante Parker and get sick e who who, you know, we're beat up in the last game, you know, whether they'll be able to play because your talent talking about some really talented guys there. I mean God, I can't believe how far gesicki the tight end has come and I know Belichick basically called him a big wide receiver this week, which I think is accurate but he's damn good at what he does in a mash-up. Yeah and the one question and you know, we'll get into our picks and a little bit before we get this n'keal Harry thing you want to talk about and of course we still have the member question of the day on this pod. But you know the weapons right for Miami, we we talked about the weapons about the Patriots all the time. But when you look at the weapons of Miami, I think last week I saw something that too was down at one point in that game. He was down his top six receivers. So including Titan including tight end. So if you know if Grant is out if Parker is out if they're just you know off 60% if you know kasicki is out Myles Gaskin was on the covid-19 this last weekend, that's their guy who they've been running the football with what is it Ahmed salvano salvano, may I forget which way it goes his name, but he's the other running back on the roster. He's been dinged up. So this is a team if they're banged up. I don't know what they can do offensively. I mean, I like to a long shot, but the one thing that jumped out at me watching that Kansas City game and maybe it's just because Kansas City is so full of explosiveness and speed but the one thing that jumped out at me watching the Dolphins offense It's Not Dead. Dynamic like say they don't have explosion and DeVante Parker could be that guy at times but he's been banged up. He's got a hammy so I don't know if he's going to play but they lack if there's one thing they need to add immediately to that Miami offense to help to a is somebody who can be

Eagles drop struggling Carson Wentz for Hurts in middle of $128m contract

"The jalen hurts thing. Yeah we let's just every sports shows gonna do it so we should probably do it. The the wentz conversation. Everybody's everybody's saying. What do they do should they. It seems like they literally can't do anything i don't think they can. Everyone's like turn them to the colts. It's frank rights problem. He'll do good with. I'm like i don't i don't know one's eaten his contract right. I know there's some creative ways to get around it. But that's just too much damn. It's easier for the team to take him. So i did some research on this. Basically if he gets traded by a certain day you he's only owed is twenty twenty one and twenty twenty two salaries and it's basically a two year forty seven million dollar deal secure the colts and franks. I love this guy. Go look at his stats last couple of years like i. I can fix this guy whenever quarterback anyway. Maybe do it. The problem is no matter when they do it. The eagles just get crushed. You know they they could save right. Twenty five point. Four million in salaries in twenty twenty one and then fifty million in twenty twenty two for guaranteed. But they're just in the whole for thirty million minimum if they trade them no matter how they've besides it with the weirdest thing is. They gave him that extension before his rookie. Dale even played out which. I never understand when teams do that. Football right yeah again. He's i mean he hasn't survived last three three out of four december. Yeah he had major need knee injury. You also have the franchise tag which you can always use. If you don't agree to affirm. I the whole concept of locking him down way before you need to when you're not even positive what he is. It is weird so anyway. I don't see how they trade them if anything you would you try to build. Jalen hurts his value up to try to trade him right. Yes exactly. I think that's the way to do it but So then how long does he have to play to build his value though like through the rest of the year. At least right well there. Somehow they're not at of the an ac-. I know they're screwed. I they might be screwed worse than the cowboys which is exciting.

"The jets. They've the only winless team in the League and the team did not score yesterday and only a jets fan would be so wounded by his history that he would say that that is a perfect start the jets season. I'm curious Mike Ryan. I. Didn't understand what you were saying when you said he doesn't last our show I didn't know whether you meant that our shows not GonNa last, very much longer or whether you meant today's show. Show you don't think you I think were surefire Adam schefter notification on my phone away today really. Yeah. Doug hangs just DM me back I'm going to give him a call right now. All right let's talk to him because people are going to want to hear about this crazy tootsie situation how it is that strip clubs in south Florida are essential unless you know when I got him. But also by the way I'm trying to research year over year I I, need to find last year's numbers but right now season to date away teams covering at a fifty four percent clip. It's still early this is a very small sample. I need to couple of with previous years that's been harder to find. Well I'll I forgive me on this because I was wondering I I know that you guys have sort of learned on the job as it's gone on in terms of producing the show but I'm not actually sure what the deal is with our stats and Info Department and how often you guys actually pick up a phone and call stats and Info because I was asking me yesterday during the game, you saw what the titans did the Texans did against the titans where they were up seven and they went for too late to put the game out of reach. Call. So I was twelve. I was asking her the math before deciding whether it was a terrible call or not, and she called an analytics department and they broke down the whole thing for her and it wasn't according to the math Abed call. She could have called me I would've told her it was a bad call. Then Meena has some access to very high level people in the stats and information department I being a little bit more of a lowly person in that department have access to a slack channel that we can send out a question into, and then maybe in a couple of hours somebody who write me back okay. Let's try that with whether the road like what are the differences? The question I guess is. What, what's the difference in an actual home field advantage so far in the football season this year as as compared to any normal year. Yeah. Let's apply the context of against the spread too because teams are going to perform as they are expected to. So usually worse teams are GonNa get creamed like the jets are going to bring down every single one of our stats dunk Hank's is there by the way. Since nineteen at twenty, four on the road, the NFC's twenty, two, twenty, three on the road. Okay. So it's not overwhelming. Do we know what it was what it's been previous years now just Questions. That gives them more words. So Doug Hank's is with us from the Miami Herald I mean you've gotten very good at that over the years. You looking everything up. No, I'm just telling them that you need more and more information. I was just wondering if we knew that's all I was just asked he's just spent the last forty minutes looking up the stats he just gave did take forty minutes I mean it was complaining last segment. He's like I'm buried in a road and home slipping and then you ask them, you give me all throughout history thanks Lori. Baltimore seven and one on the road. Say, quick. So Doug Hanks his with US thank you for being on with US thanks for getting back to us. So quickly can you just tell us about the insanity that makes a nightclub at a strip club essential so that it can have a five o'clock in the morning curfew. mean the landmark legal victory calls by the erotic dancers that? Yes Yep. Florida's. Well Yeah I mean that was a big part I mean to a certain extent. Strip club was the perfect business the challenge, the curfew because a vital part of its business is going to be after midnight. and so they made the argument. How can this order stand? Well, we have the Florida governor telling local governments. You can no longer restrict the capacity of restaurants and tootsie has food service. So it has the the food license that was covered by the governor's order which told local mayors. You can't reduce capacity at restaurants below fifty percent. So one of the many arguments took these nate is listen at midnight arc capacity goes down to zero percent because of this order and the judge agreed with them. All right. So for the UNINITIATED, can you please explain to non-south Floridians? What to seize is beyond obviously an entertainment a strip club I mean it's it's a little more than that. I actually don't know maybe you can fill I'm talking about Sir is I'm talking about the size of. Their house just a big strip. World's biggest strip clubs the biggest in the world yet it's like an old costco's warehouse. Costco's that they turned in New and Erotic Dancing Gentlemen's Club. I love the doug pleaded ignorant now but no I understand what does confuse you made it seem like it also like more into a department store I. Think I think what he thought I was doing is wondering whether or not it morphs into prostitution champagne room we're not gonNA put anybody in that position would never it also has a sports bar as a part of it. That's a fairly huge sports bar. It's also got an entire sports league in one of the back room they play an entire except Miami's actually playing their home games there the so doug, what did you find interesting about this landmark legal case? Well I mean there was so much interesting but. I..

"And I have no earthly idea how to do the measurements on what the home advantage is. Now is it just flights then that we're saying is the advantage like Green Bay through the first five weeks of the season it's been documented they their offense per drive was more efficient than any in the history of the sport. and. They go to Tampa and they got slaughtered thirty eight to ten. Aaron Rodgers plays as bad a game as I've ever seen him play the very good defense. What is yes and a very good defensive line. That can get pressure with four, but like honest to God I'm asking you. Is The road home advantage going to be different in any way this year. than. It has been when there's a stadium full of people because I think Washington you know yesterday playing against the giants I don't think NFL game I know. I know really extrapolate much from that. I just took it because it was a close game late and you have a quarterback who's inexperienced. Certain stadiums at have people in it, and there's certain stadiums that don't New York is one of the stadiums at doesn't have any people. So the Pittsburgh steelers have yet to play an NFL game on the road in front of fans. This season I think it's the travel mainly that that affects some but. These these fans do make noise occasionally even though it, it's less than twenty thousand fans there. You have seen some teams get jarred by the sound and and go to silent count the, steelers go to Tennessee this week. So they'll be fans there were fans there this past week I don't know how many more there I guess what I'm asking you though is it's such a small number of fans and it's such a minute amount of noise that I'm asking you what is the real value because I'd always thought that the emotion of roaring crowd momentum stuff of course that it would mean something in terms of fuelling a linebacker a little extra if he's fatigued late in the game. But I I haven't looked it up. So I don't know over the first five weeks of the season. If you have seen an empirical difference in when team travels on the road, the point spreads have stayed largely the same the points better spreads seemed to be respecting the road the same way. But I I haven't seen it happen I guess what I'm asking you guys have a lot of road teams won this year. I have to look it up. Yeah. Don't know you don't have to look it up we will look eventually but the reason I'm asking you a question is because I don't know whether my eyes are lying to me or not because I'm not sitting here watching these games and fearing in any way if you you know you're rooting for the road team that they've got some sort of disadvantage because they're playing on the road like I. Don't know if the raiders beat the chiefs if Arrowhead has seventy, five thousand fans there but you know stuff happens randomly in the NFL just does I don't know. I'm journalists, Ben Writer and I wanNA tell you about my new podcast, the edge. "They have sucked it out of them. Don they were in position to score at the end, but they went for touchdowns could easily kicked a field goal and ended and they miss a field goal or two did. I've I've got to ask you guys a question all of you as Astute, studier of Stugatz, and also you've just got this labyrinth in this library of lies that stretches back decades. So he comes in here and he sounded Sour Mike with bleep you and you thought it was the jet and now he's doing this happy dance of this is what I like I'm glad I'm happy we're losing like that I. Do not believe that God's watch that day and was like I'm glad we're doing this. This is the right play. Emotional about this I, I actually don't believe cigarettes watched it at all. No. I did watch it as your hat covered in sweat seasons. You played like, what? How many holes this weekend oh I played a bunch on Saturday. Had sweatier than it's ever been It is it's very caked onto it. I had a sweaty Saturday I it's on husband I did watch the I did watch the Dolphin jet game after what your brands get destroyed because I had the steal her sorry about that I thought had a football team I was rooting for you. I really was man. All right. Can I get this out of the way I know it's saying I had the steelers I was really rooting for you. Once he wants. I've had a bad team as long as he's known always rooting for you in generally. It seems like he pivoted off jets talked straight ended you're making fun of your. Today I mean they got destroy. Destroy exactly what I did I cleveland browns take they're still on pace for their best season since entering the NFL nineteen ninety nine, it's all about look good team but they're certainly not an elite there's a white I think they've lost to the Ravens and steelers seventy, six to thirteen. So that's not good. They probably gotta clean that up also we're super injured. That was that was Jimmy Garoppolo type benching right? Like he's going to be back next week right? He's he super heard I mean the his last six quarters have been disastrous and you got cracked ribs against Indianapolis. That being said though I don't care how hurt your ribs are that first interception pick six where he didn't see Minkah Fitzpatrick does that a lot where there's just someone in the middle of the field he's locked in on a receiver I don't know if it's a hype thing. I don't know if it's an eyesight thing, but he just doesn't see him and he throws a right. Right directly to them. So they big question marks. I'm not too worried. I mean the steelers are better than the browns. Worry because he's one of 'em, this many games into his career still don't know you have a quarterback. I look there's no way of knowing I think he's hurt the offensive line was banged up. I don't like that it's an absolute boat race I would like it to be tighter. We played two really good teams on the road and gotten smacked in those games. The browns indigo as they go as he does, it seems fairly obvious that the steelers are really good. The titans are really good. The chiefs are really good So you've got at the top of of the AFC and Baltimore's really. Good and so those that's the cream everyone else's playing for that fifth and sixth playoff spot right barring barring injuries. What was it extra spot? Yeah there's a yeah. So the Browns I think you're going to be favored in every single one of their games in November they had the ravens at home. They have the steelers at home. I've spent the last twenty years getting my head caved in by the. Ravens and sealers. So that's not very new. What's new is just mentioned blowing up every time the browns lose these teams. Now, what's ugly something else? That's news to God's because me Mike and Meena. We're talking about this yesterday the way that the steelers are using rothlisburger. He's not doing any reckless things because he's not throwing it down the field very much. He's got I think one interception unless he. Threw one yesterday and there can't be a team in the league better producing receivers than that one right like over the last pretty crazy in terms of they just keep finding receivers everywhere over the time going back to hines war, they keep developing guys hines ward was a a wide quarterback in college. Randall. Elza quarterback in College Antonio Brown was a low drafted player Maple Tron the Canadian Klay Pool. He's stepped in there and he's a assumed the number one wide receiver they are a wide receiver factory. Eh is is is probably number one right now Juju Juju becomes your number two because Klay pools develop that quickly. Dan's point though that's all setting. Jude best operates as a number to it seems as Klay polls taken that number one away from him is in Clayton Stupidity here or is he already on? Stupidity Clegg where you are you're on the hunt for clay pool we were hoping this week. He will join me Mike Golic junior for the second recording of of stupidity this week on Thursdays but. On Your Big Ben Point. How many yards he for yesterday he didn't need to two, hundred, one, hundred and fifty. The scary thing is the browns evens actually played Kinda well but I do reserve my judgment somewhat on on the the Big Ben is back in and they fix everything because been has had horrible home road splits for the last four years. He's a different quarterback on the road. They've played one road game a road game against Daniel Jones in an empty stadium that they had several weeks to prepare. They have three road games will learn a lot about big Ben. He does have eleven touchdowns one interception. I mean. Look this up and I'd be curious what this is because Mike Exciting..

"The hatred for to a total of a lower is at an all time high after the past couple of weeks of where do you draft two of his hip his hip his hip his tip is the big concern I wouldn't track to be sliding down draft boards he could go was as high as third or as low as twenty third which trust me that is not happening all the hate culminated tonight in at culminating in the all the hate coming tonight with a report of two was Wunderlich which she took it came back with a score of thirteen and now I can't get over and it's haters because I just have to say haters because of the way things have been going and I'll get into why but it's haters who are just continually jumping up and down on to and how all yeah I don't know if I could read about it if I can draft all right first of all let's deal with the hip he's got a clean bill of health right now okay he's healthy he is healthy could you get it in four years could something happen with his hip yeah put in four years a guy you draft instead of him could be out of the league right there's a risk in every single player you take in the NFL draft there's very few perfect prospects will the last perfect prospects pose it was Andrew luck I think was the last guy that got the highest grade that Kashmir was was Andrew luck and before that I think it was Peyton manning I did with over the last couple of guys to get perfect grades coming out of college there's no such thing as a perfect prospect all right the thing is the thing what people fail to realize with two a is that when you can talk about someone that's had injuries it's tangible it's black and white so it's easy to say well I would worry about him because you know we could wind up having an injured hip in a couple yeah you could you know other guys could wind up getting hurt too but because it's an injury it's something tangible that I don't know the hip could given problems you know it's not tangible the fact that the quarterback might not be able to make his second weakness progression mark Sanchez may not be able to do that and that's going to find a guy out of the league faster than a guy who's good with a hip injury there are so many risks for quarterbacks but we we focus on the physical because that's what we can understand what all the evaluators you see we have a filter they're looking at if they're picking everything apart why is this guy going to be able to travel to the next level because he's able to go through his progressions quickly or he's able to put the football in a place where only his teammate is going to get to it look Joe burrow it made a meal out of that this season only putting the football where his player was going to go get on LSU there's so many things going with there's so many risks for every player there's just as much risk for Justin Herbert because the guy could be a bust all right I want to play some games last year your chase a locker for on with us earlier this week he said there's a couple of games he looked like a high school kid playing quarterback he looks so bad last year everything to what has done on the field physically has shown you he is the tag for to a guy he is the most talented quarterback in the NFL draft and how I know what's haters when it comes to everything now you have the Wonderlic score out here of thirteen thirteen is not the worst for the world there's been guys with scores in the single digits and you know what some of them it has to stop Frank gore I think got a seven on the Wonderlic and he's going to the hall of fame so it's not like you just because you could have low score thirteen I think he took it before I got a nineteen on it when he was at Alabama together thirteen now his score is absolutely fine but all this jumping up and down on to a is all haters and it's all pushing is his value down and it's not fair because what's not being talked about by the same people that are like a draft to again as a present what about all the other things he brings to the table what about all the reasons why you would take of that height with considering what he can do physically what kind of arm he has what kind of accuracy has how strong his arm is how you can get outside the pocket all right his attitude that so far has been the best part of it no one's talking about because he's taking all of this eight and he is not imploded he's not explode is not blamed anybody he he is just trying to let people know I'm healthy right so this is a kid who's healthy could be hurt later on yeah but like I said the the risks for other players are out there too as long as he's healthy now he is the most talented quarterback in the draft there's no reason why I wouldn't take him I I I said months ago I would take him number one overall other people came to the party late on that congratulations it's good for us so I would take him number one I told you as always gets a clean bill of health I take a number one because he's that good the people are forgetting he was that good and if I'm a team in in the draft and I need a quarterback I am happy as hell with this is going on right now because this means the price to move up for him is going to be less and less because the lines are open for business at three and the giants are open for business at four and if teams are going to get scared away and there will be teams scared away of two a because of his health because what whatever reason because now is the time when teams talk themselves into things they don't need to talk themselves into the competition to move up to get him is going to be a lot less so a lot of teams that need quarterbacks you're not hearing from they are happy as hell right now still to this around that yeah yet continue to hate to us so we can go up and get in and get a franchise quarterback and be and be set for the next

"Only NFL podcast. Here's the name Charles Barkley and then starts barking in response. I did not get an NFL hall of Famer on my show today. But I think I got something even Better Spencer Hall College Football Expert. I think this is the. It's been exactly a year since you appear. Is that right? I'm guessing I think so. We almost got off to a great start there because I almost busted out laughing when the advice stop being fat came out of your mouth. I wonder how those couched from Moses Malone was just stopping fat or was it like a subtle nudge you know like hey man maybe try like a diet coke every now and then not nothing. Subtle about Moses Bologne. It was straight up. Stop being also had to think Moses Malone New Charles Barkley understood that that the gentle on ramp onto this was not the way to go nose just to be straight on. Because if you're gonNA tell Charles Something Remember Charles. Got His job by telling a table. Full of TV exempts. And I quote. Y'All suck so I think it went straight straight down the pipe straight down the pipe speaking of that. I actually so. It's been a year Spencer since ahead you on because this time of the year when. Nfl folks like myself start pretending like we know about anything about college football and like most folks. I watch the Big Games. The big teams. I unfortunately am not. It's unfortunate that I'm in Washington. Huskies fan I guess it. It'll be apparent that it's unfortunate. We started talking about Jacob season but I miss a lot all missile. And that's why I need people like you who actually watch it very closely and can give us hipster picks and cops and that sort of thing to come on and set a straight about college players. What is the number one thing that? Nfl people screw up when we try to talk about college football. Start there I'm so glad you ask a question. That flattered my worldview in particular. That's great because I will offer by the. I'll offer the thing after this as a counter. The thing that college people screw up about projecting to the pros right But to answer your question I the first thing that people in the NFL consistently get wrong. Is this the ignored the tape? And that's that's they'll find things to pick apart and Dell line them up at the combine. Which I'm kinda combined defender. I think it's only fair to do that. Because football is worth and about so many factors that you have to simplify your evaluations right. There's so many different things you could pick up. You play against so many different kinds of people. The guy that you line up against might end up being an accountant in three years or they may be an all pro right They're probably not going to be both. But you never know right but it's very important to respect that but at the same time go you know when you see a guy like when my favorite cases with Derek Barnett like dare. I couldn't explain to you why he worked but he was always in the right place. He had great football instincts and he was always an impact player so when people would nitpick or say well. I don't know the eagles reached on him. No not not in the least. That dude was one hundred percent the dude every time. He took the field. Now by the way that that's not that's very like quantifiable thing. It's not just me saying. Oh Yeah. He's the dude that's the man you'll get it. You'll draft that guy. No it's not like I'm not trying to con and even into drafting somebody like that but generally when the numbers are on somebody's side and a team hedging on taking this guy you know go go ahead do it if the bulk of his career correlated with immense success right yes. It's also worth noting Garrick Barnett trained by Jalen. Ramsey's dad that's all. You really needed to know right. One hundred percent of dog dog rating one hundred percent dog rating. That's something that can contribute to this. Podcast I think you're right about all of that and it's also this is silly season. I mean when you start seeing mocks that have CJ Henderson above. Jeffrey Okuda and I. So here's a restructure brief housekeeping. We're GONNA talk about the quarterback first half of this and then we're going to talk about some other fun players. But I wanNA talk about the quarterbacks and I want to start with one of those silly or crazy or I don't know how to feel mocks or not. The mock isn't crazy. It's the notion in so mel kiper. His mock it's not based on how he's assessing these players is based he's mocking where he thinks go and Spencer. Herbert jumped to it today. Strategy that has struggled lake. It was hard for me to get those words out of my mouth in that particular order so I actually watched a fair amount of Justin her being PAC twelve viewer and I have to is also player of wash lobby and look again. Boxer that mock. It's about teams in what they're saying. Whispers and Kuyper had Daniel Jones going early. You know so. There's a realistic shot. Now that is happening. My mind exploded when I saw it. Is there any defense for that notion? I don't know I just other than the medical stuff in some secret medical information that you and I don't have barring given all things being the same. There's really no defense for it there. Is this the notion that just in Herbert Pro? Typically looks more like a a standard. Nfl quarterback of the past and maybe has a higher ceiling than to. That's it. That's really the only reason to take herbert higher and it would really only makes sense. I think if Herbert were underrated if you were saying well he went from the fourth round of the third or from the third of the second and we thought well he's got room to grow and we can take a flyer on him because our organization is in a very good position to do that. Sure go ahead take her. In that case jumping a guy who in his comeback workout tape was described by doper is being one of the most impressive workouts. He's ever seen I know Trent dilfer by the way because he's a very excitable man and I love that about him. could be prone to slight hyperbole. I don't think anybody who's watched to play For the past two years for Alabama is going to disagree with that and I think there's this if you've watched Herbert play and again this is where like okay. Don't ignore the tape right. What is telling you it's telling you that it's a player. That pervert is a player with immense skills and a lot of laws and a lot of Grow that's that's basically trust your instincts when you see him and when and when you go okay he can throw it through a brick wall that he can throw it with accuracy at times. Is he making the best rates? No is he understanding what he's saying on the field absolutely not look too. That's a far more developed game like at no point. Did I feel like Oregon was necessarily back in the game because Herbert was out there? I you know that's you. You always knew that this is somebody who on their growth curve was prone to making mistakes could be pressure. Could Force things right. I think that happens a lot too especially gifted quarterbacks and come out of high school and they've had some success in college they will force things to an extreme To attack below has his flaws he will force balls. He will think that he can I think he has. What a lot of successful quarterbacks have which is the same thing that a lot of successful burglars have. Which is you know if they will see any crack in the window I can get in there and yeah and the thing though. Is that if you watch Herbert. He's playing more. I'm fixing Washington Husky to you some Chris. Chris Peterson on the status of quarterback right on stages of quarterback evolution. We can come into jake of eastern on this. Do they tend to throw station to station? They don't throw in terms of motion and in terms of where people will be or throwing people open. They just throw to a spot or they throw it away receiver in particular route. They're not necessarily saying okay. I'm going to throw this method this on the curve right or metro unconventional position or this is the most impressive thing to me about too. Is that Peyton manning it as peek through eight or nine different kinds of passes right and he could probably tell you specific names at situations in which to throw those types of passes right if he threw it was intentional because it was a deep all that was going to a specific receiver in a specific situation where he knew the position and where the ball would drop in a position to. Does something close? I'm not saying? He throws eight or nine perfectly calibrated types of passes with the situation. But he's got touch. He throws the people in motion on the run. He will get it to a receiver on his hands and he will throw from unconventional positions. Also unflappable. These are things that I cannot say necessarily true about herber. They could be true. This is another thing. I'll tell you winning not to unflappable. Okay no notes and sorry to interrupt you but that's like a personal bias against college if there's something like we all overweight and underweight certain things right when we get to the wide receivers. You'll there's some clear things. I tend to favor probably a little bit too much at blind spots that lead to blind spots for me for me when I look quarterbacks and I look at the pros and I and I I know and this is going to be. Why Overweight Anthony Gordon look into term? Because he is the most flat the flabbiest flab flammable human being my com for him by the way is. What if Gardner Minhsiu? I don't know if I could say it on this. Podcast CAN DISAPPEAR. Fry surrounded with family friendly he. He's he's competent. He's a cross between Gardner minhsiu ingestion. Choline leave it at that. Gotcha but back to Herbert into the the flap. A bonus flap ability. I it's matters so much to me Spencer and I just that's why Herbert's classic senior bowl like when you're not actually playing football riser. Because he's awesome against Air Dude. Crushes it okay? He has all the tools. He's got a beautiful arm and and that's why he does come with the variants that you alluded to earlier but I just I just struggle. I really struggle with a guy who just completely falls apart in the collapsing pocket. Like that you know and and who really struggles with diagnosing the field and then you contrast that with two or who has the most sophisticated processor in this entire class sometimes sometimes justin. Herbert has what I call a shopping cart syndrome. Which is where he just drifts. He'll just kind of drifts slowly to one side and head toward and head toward the sideline and just look for a guy like a shopping cart lost in the parking lot. He'll he'll do that right. And you don't see too and do a whole lot of that too. Like every quarterback can try too hard at times. Now in just Herbert's defense. I will say this college fans in to come back to something that I promised I would do. Which is tell you. The State College fans make. College fans will often mistaken athletes peak and their peak in context For a spot on their way to further greatness right some some athletes just Pekan College. They're just right there like maybe the Best Center. I've ever seen or one of the best neighbors ever seen. Barrett Jones Bear Jones was undersized Barrett Jones was a four point. Oh student who actually. I mentioned being an accountant. Earlier on purpose he did turn pro and accounting instead of football Bear Jones By all accounts heat in college he ended up winning a national title at Alabama and is also brilliant on the violin for some reason Just kind of an overall polymath football ended up being a resume line for him for Herbert. That may be the case like I think most college fans would say. Oh yeah they would agree with you. One hundred percent that you could rattle her. I don't know of too can get a whole lot better and I know that sounds like if he does that would be extraordinary thousand. That question is there a ceiling on him? Well it's weird because it's weird to talk about an injury guy like this but like he strikes me as potentially high floor low ceiling. I mean if he's as good as he was in college he will be one of the best quarterbacks ever played so the question of his ceiling If he's if he's consistent across his high school and college performance There isn't much room for him to grow in terms of overall performance. And that's fine. Herbert is definitely brew for him. To grow based on based on the game tape additionally I'd also point out to to who to passing two two is passing to Jerry Judy. He was passing to. Yeah he was passing. I mean I left so much when watch it in the earth. Well let me ask you this. I know we're jumping ahead. How would you even rank the Alabama This year it's really hard for me. It's like comparing natural.

Which is you know if they will see any crack in the window and go I can get in there and yeah and the thing though. I'll tell you winning us. Not to unflappable. One hundred percent that you can rattle her. I don't know of too can get a whole lot better and I know that sounds like if he does that would be extraordinary thousand. That question is there a ceiling on him? Well it's weird because it's weird to talk about an injury guy like this but like he strikes me as potentially high floor low ceiling. I mean if he's as good as he was in college he will be one of the best quarterbacks ever played so the question of his ceiling If he's if he's consistent across his high school and college performance There isn't much room for him to grow in terms of overall performance..

"Tony Romo seven teen million dollars he got from. Cbs to stay at CBS. Seventeen million the highest contract ever given to an analyst in any sport in the US. Anyway I don't know about abroad But it tops. John Madden. I think he had was making twelve to thirteen million a year when he retired. Something like that may have been a little bit more But Tony Romo stays at CBS. With gymnasts on the contract is many years according to Several reports Which means essentially the contract will be worth more than one hundred million dollars so probably end up making more money in his broadcasting career. Then he made in his NFL career. Which is quite remarkable considering the Tony. Romo was starting quarterback for a long period of time In the NFL I I like Tony Romo I like Tony. Romo a lot and I you know and I think he and nets make a great team. I think people. Watch football for the football. I would love to see how. Cbs pencils out this Roi. This return on investment paying somebody that much money now. Espn apparently was very aggressive. Yeah going after him and they were willing to offer him a lot of money. Cbs pays the NFL. Roughly based on its current deal about a billion dollars. Okay for the rights to televise games. I was reading the other day that basically it costs them. Roughly a hundred million dollars a year in production to air all of those NFL Games. And when you have the Super Bowl it costs you basically twenty five million in costs just to broadcast the Super Bowl. I mean the amount of money spent to get the rights to spend a hundred million to broadcast. Nfl Games is crazy crazy. And then you know of one hundred million in production costs to air every game that airs on CBS. Seventeen million seventeen million of it's going to one guy From this point four forward. And that's Tony Romo. I'd love to see how that all pencils out but anyway Cbs apparently thought that that that he the SPN may have topped that offer And so You know our top their original offer and they're in they're in for you know a dime they're in for you know seventeen million At this point for Tony Romo who is good is good. You know what he has done as a broadcaster sort of looking at the way everybody lines. Up The line of scrimmage and then sort of predicting the play before it happened yes I mean look. He's my friend but I'm going to give him credit Chris. Cooley was doing that on radio when he started doing the Redskins Games on radio and he started doing that and people thought it was crazy. Remember locally I mean people nationally weren't listening to Cooley caller REDSKINS radio game but a lot of you. It's my God. Have you listened to the broadcast? Cooling calls play out before it happens. It's not because he knew the play he just did studied you know formations and had a sense more times than than not. That was the first time I really had a heard anybody do that. Romo's been doing you know some people don't like it when people say it ruined the surprise of the flame weird. Yeah I I'll say this about Romo the the one thing that you know he can say and that. Cbs can justify that. Romo is the one is the one broadcaster and especially the one color guy at this point that you're usually talking about the next day or the leading up to it. You're saying all right what's Romo going to say? You're oh look Romo's on the broadcast. There are very few of those these days and usually when you're talking about a socially a color analyst. You're talking about it in a negative sense if it's the Burger McFarland disaster ready. Spn So in that sense the Tony Romo. You can question whether he's worth seventeen million but he's valuable to CBS for that reason. I think you're right about that. You know I think no one says that about Collins worth or Aikman and to be honest with you. It's more about Tessa tour than booger on the Monday night. Broadcast is longer got the. Hey especially the playoff game in the last little bit of the ranch. Which playoff game did they call the Buffalo Houston game might have been that one? I can't remember his Um on. I think you know what I think you're right about that. I think Romo may be the only guy out there that actually may bring in a few more people. Because he's calling the game you know he is. You know there's been just a lot of buzz about the broadcasts that he's had A lot of money man a lot of money you know I I heard i. I don't know where I was In terms of the the Xm Sirius Channel. It was late at night. Saturday night it was so it was you know. Well after the Maryland game and and I was listening to two two guys do a show. I don't know what network it was on. And they were debating whether or not. This was wrong that Tony Roma's making that much money in the players most players don't and were making the case that this is just inappropriate unlike. Wait a minute Tony. Romo's not employed by the NFL Tony Romo's employed by CBS. He's an entertainer. The there's no I guess you can have the feeling that it's wrong that he gets played paid more than but a lot of broadcasters get paid a lot more than a lot of players just you know most broadcasters like you know the eight teams in any of these sports get paid more money per year than the majority of players that are playing in the games that they're calling so that didn't make much sense to me But I like rummy now. Here's the the the big question is this? What is Monday night football going to do Monday night? Football has joe tested tour. Has BOOGER MCFARLAND? A much criticised tandem. you know. Espn is said publicly here. Recently that they're coming back to Monday night football But they said the same thing. If I recall about Sean McDonough you know in in Grooten. I like Sean McDonough Lot. I think he's excellent. Espn needs to do something differently unless they decide to go with you know sort of somebody believes intesa torn booger. Actually Bugger is prepared. Really prepared has a little bit of personality but I know we got a lot of stuff wrong in that playoff game. He did I who peyton manning is the only guy. Yeah I mean. It'll be interesting to see you're going to hear a lot. Weird names thrown out there and a lot of money thrown out there. 'cause I think. Espn has to you know. They can't at this point. Everyone knows they went after Romo. They missed out on Romo. They can't just go back if nothing else than I the optics I mean I personally I'd be okay with bugger. Just changed the play by play Guy But the Here's so here's something just to consider about peyton manning first of all we did hear that. Peyton manning would've worked with my Tariq. Oh that if Torika were stability. Spn PEYTON would have worked with three go so the fact that he has a sense of who he'd work well with or who he really respects. I get it. You know he doesn't have to do this. I mean he doesn't need the money I also in Greg and I were talking about this on the radio show you know. Virtually everything Peyton Manning's ever done which has led us to believe that he is. You know a natural in front of the camera that he's funny that he's you know quick that he Is is really entertaining. You know all the promos all the commercials over the years I mean with the exception of the SNL live thing. But it's still rehearsed everything he's ever done been rehearsed right you know and so would it surprise me. Peyton. Manning has a sense about himself that he's much better when rehearsed and comes off and by the way the expectation of Payton might be that he should be funny. 'cause the commercials are funny And that he's not super funny in in sort of a you know. A A a a non rehearsed live environment Some of that could be true. Some of that could be true. I still think he'd be a great analyst though he knows the game. Yeah A may not come out that polished. He may not sound that good. Maybe that maybe that's what he's worried about. What I'm suggesting. That might be the case but yeah. I'd really want to know his information. Yeah exactly I hope. Espn changes it. A little bit Lastly I had one other thing that I wanted to mention. Oh wilder fury three is set for July eighteenth so there you go Deontay wilder exercise the right for an immediate third fight Hopefully he'll come in with a different uniform. I was GONNA say it's only GonNa be twenty pounds not It should be zero pounds. It should be whatever he he's trunks and his gloves and they put the gloves on when they get into the ring. Are they allowed to do that anymore? I forget what they do Anyway that's it for the day Tommy's with us tomorrow back then thanks..

"They were just flat out. The better team wasn't detergent. Didn't have his team. Ready wasn't at turgeon. Got Out exit exit in owed you know there was a little bit change up. In the in the rotation Lindo played Keam heart played although hearts played in recent games and hard. I don't even think played Aaron in the first half or did he barely played the first half and had a lot of minutes in the second. Half actually I thought he played pretty well But they miss them free throws They gave up more threes. You know they've given up. Thirty two made threes in their last three games like forty two percent they're giving in three point percentage defense. That's not very good. That's hurting them here. In their last three games they've lost two of them to Ohio. State and Michigan and Michigan state could have easily lost the game to Minnesota. There's nothing about this game other than the three point defense which I think part of it is just you know the they played three teams at that have really gotten at going Nothing about this game that really impacts the way I feel about Maryland. Which is they're very good team. They've got a very good chance to win the big ten regular season title. I still favor them to at least have a share of it. I think tomorrow night's match up against rutgers is a tough match up but I think they're a very good team. That's got a very good chance to go very far. And I think Michigan State. This is what they do March. They start to turn it around and I think they're going to be a threat to go pretty deep into March as well The atmosphere was phenomenal. It just never got to the point where we know it would have gotten Erin had Maryland. Made her one gotten legitimately close. There were a few times in there where Maryland on a few mini runs to cut it to ten to nine or would ever wear. It seemed like Oh man this could be the crowds getting amped up and then Michigan State. You should really frustrating. I do think you could tell you could tell during the anthem that there was something about this crowd that was given any reason could have come completely unhinged and completely changed the game and they were just never given that reason the the the one opportunity. Jalen Smith made you know sort of jump. Hook in the lane to make it sixty six fifty seven. I WANNA say there is about eight minutes left in the game. And then they they missed a shot on the other end and they couldn't grab the rebound and Xavier. Tillman grabbed the rebound offensively. Kicked it to to Watson. The coronary knocked down three and that seemed to be the Real Dagger. Because if you come down sixty six fifty seven and you make another bucket. You're getting a Michigan State. Time out the places into it and now you're right where you've been against a lot of teams you know like they were down eight to Minnesota two and a half to tend to go But it wasn't to be Merrill didn't play there. They played far from a Maryland style. Game and Izzo said after the game he said said two things he said one that was about as good an atmosphere as they've ever played in number two. He said that was their best game of the year. Now's said he was. He was a little bit frustrated with some of the turnovers in Winston as good as he was had several turnovers But he said they really played. Well they did. They played excellent basketball. They're a good team. You know they were the preseason number one team in the country. They've now won three in a row after losing the Maryland any slanting and their game. Back the TURPS. I don't love the match up tomorrow night. I think rutgers is good. I think they're desperate and do you know that you can't get into that building for less than two hundred fifty three hundred bucks now. They are fired up for this game at rutgers tomorrow night. Some people saying at rector's it's one of their biggest home games in years you know part of it is the geography of being near Maryland Maryland. Being in the lead in the big ten and Erin all the sudden you know rutgers. I'm not putting him on the bubble necessarily but in the latest bracket Tala G. They're down to an eleven seed you know. They haven't played well recently. They've lost three games in a row. Good Teams Michigan. Wisconsin and Penn State. I think tomorrow night's GonNa be a really tough game would not surprise me if the spread tomorrow. Night is frighteningly low for us. Have you seen in early number in that game? I haven't but you say frighteningly low. I don't know how about rutgers being favoured. It wouldn't win shocking me. Yeah I mean if you look at let me pull up Ken Palm Right now. What was Maryland favored at home for? Rutgers by? I can't remember accurate. I mean Ken Palm has rutgers is a one point favorite. Yes so there you go. I mean hasn't we you're factoring and homecourt there. I mean yes. Sixty six sixty five game against yeah Yeah and if they lose that now you're potentially only playing for share of the conference title on Sunday Against Michigan. Tomorrow night's big really big in the same way the Minnesota game with sort of big. I I didn't know that they would beat Michigan State But now tomorrow night. You know this one's big against rutgers in it's GonNa be a crazy environment up there. The racks always been a tough place to play. When rutgers is had decent teams Merrill was a seven and a half point favorite at home on February fourth and eighth in and that was a tough game they won the game fifty six fifty one but rutgers played him tough Rutgers has been good. They've got a Guy Geo Baker who actually comes off the bench that is one of the real clutch players in the back court in the in the entire league so we'll see By the way the the latest bracket Tala Ji from Joel Nardi anyway on Espn DOT COM. He still has. Maryland is a two seat And he has them. I would say as the number three two seat. It looks like Seton Hall is the number four to seek because they're in the region with Kansas who I think would be the overall one seed. Baylor lost again this weekend they must. Tcu Yeah that that whole thing where they are matters less geographical but yeah. I'd say right now. Barring completely running the table the one seed thought is done for Maryland. Because they've piled up or they you know especially if they take one more loss they would have just piled up too many losses to get that one seat over a two loss. Dayton or one los and they were GonNa Win Against Rutgers and Michigan and then win the big ten tournament which five win streak which would put him at twenty eight and six six. I think that would probably do it but anything less than that. I think we have tough to make the argument for yen. I don't expect them to do that. To be quite honest. I wouldn't surprise me if they split the games this weekend. Up with a share of the big ten title and go out not. I don't think they're GONNA go off. I mean Hell. The big ten tournament is GonNa be ridiculous in terms of the teams. You'RE GONNA have to play like Maryland you know is pretty safe for the double by at this point You know they'll end up with a quarter final game against somebody like Ohio State or Michigan. You know that's GonNa be like the quarter final game not gonna be very easy To get through the big ten tournament and Ohio States. Playing really well right now. They're actually back to playing at a level that they were playing at earlier in the year. They've won I think now Something like eight of their last nine. I think it was lost Wisconsin. I forget who will say loss to anyway Crazy scene should be another. Look the Michigan game on on Sunday at noon. It's a noon start. I understand. That's different from the eight o'clock start. There's no game day in town. This is going to be a big game but this is the one that could clinch the outright big ten title. It's actually more important It could be more important to Maryland Then the game on Saturday night anyway. Whatever anything else you got on the game no not really tergence. Didn't get you know outmaneuvered okay. They needed to rebound better. They needed to defend better and Michigan. State played great in Maryland. Didn't play great. Didn't miss call a time out there. There wasn't one glaring XS and OS strategy mistake. I think I may have tried a little bit zone. When they're getting brought broken down consistently on the on the ball screen game with Winston. Maybe but they're shooting it too well from the outside to really think that going to his own was going to help That much All right let's get to the redskins right after I tell you about mybookie Dot AG mybookie Dot AG has more prop bet opportunities for March madness coming up than anybody out there remember when they had the Super Bowl prop bets. I told you nobody's got more than my bookie DOT AG and more importantly if you're looking to bet college basketball's we are into March. Now I want you to consider my book dot..

Cowboys may use both tags on Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper

"The final year specifies that each of the NFL's thirty two teams can use both the franchise and transition tags this particular offseason that historic guarantee. If you don't know what that is you know franchise in transition tags in general I mean we. We have all sorts of information if you really want to understand the depths of them but in general the franchise and transition tag are ways that NFL teams can protect players that are set to be free agents. If you don't WanNA player to hit free agency you don't want me hit the open market. Bam you slapped a franchise or transition tag on them and typically generally only one is available to each NFL team so you have to pick which player you want to place a franchise tag on right or transition. Whatever the movie and so the fact that all. Nfl teams would be able to utilize both of them. This offseason really served as an incredible asset for the cowboys wrote about this last year. We wrote about this in March. Nineteen how we talked about then. Hey next offseason. The cowboys could have this really awesome tidbit in the that was the title of the article. That could really help them. Because of the cowboys find themselves in a position and we we kind of forecast this year ago where they have three big players that new contract extensions that are set to be true free agents Dak Prescott Amari Cooper and Byron Jones. You knew that and so while you can shake combination however you want in all likelihood the Dallas cowboys were going to Franchise Tag Prescott because it seems incredibly unlikely that deal done before that happens. Before the franchise tag deadline and then they were going to place the transition tag on either Amari Cooper or Byron Jones. Whoever you believe more likely personally I believe it was Amari Cooper but that would prevent both of those players from hitting the open market. Which means the cowboys could protect them. That's a big deal in. It seems like in this again. My personal opinion and and other people it'd be to share these thoughts and certainly a lot of our readers and commenters and listeners but a lot of people had kind of sort of made the assumption that the cowboys have accepted that they're going to lose Byron Jones. And you know what I think. I think I speak for all of us. That are listening. Here we're all gathered around the campfire. You know what if the cowboys is Byron? Jones not ideal but at least they have Dakhil these they have. They can figure this out. Maybe they spend their first round. Pick on cornerback. Whatever not trying to get to far into those weeds but the ability to keep both deck and Amari was and is a gigantic advantage. That the cowboys have going for them. How ever if a new collective bargaining agreement is reached in so far again at the time of this recording. We have the half that the owners have to comply with if a new collective bargaining agreement is reached it will essentially rendered the ability for teams to use both tags moot and they will revert to normal circumstances where there can only place one tag on one player. Now if you have not out by now you need to know that this hypothetical world which is I would say somewhat imminent in somewhat inevitable based on the rates that the collective bargaining agreement is happening and again as we sit on Thursday night. There's so many players kind of tweeting that they don't like the new. Cba proposal and whatnot so there could be some back and forth but if this is finalized before free agency and there's still a couple of weeks and those are going to be very important weeks then. Dak Prescott has all of the leverage in the world and all of the leverage in the world and we touched on this at the end of Thursday's episode because if that's the case and you and I were representing Dak Prescott. Then guess. What our point in our proposal to Jerry Jones Stephen Jones in the cowboys organization? Hey Dude if you don't if you don't get a deal done with us if you don't give deck all the money's basically you're going to have to tag them we all know that and if you tag back guess what you cannot tag anybody else if you tag back. Guess what. Amari Cooper and Byron Jones are going to be true free agents. You're going to be competing with the market for them. That is not ideal and other cowboys went from a world where they were probably going to lose one of the two. Probably going to be Byron Jones right to now that could potentially lose both of them which which would be a complete and utter disaster. And you know you can. You can play hindsight's twenty twenty but if the cowboys had just up to their contract offer to Dak Prescott Uruguay. I mean. We're talking thirty. Three thirty four million dollars per year. Everybody freaked out about that last year. That would look like such a bargain out. That's what happens with these deals. We've talked about that Matt Ryan to use thirty million dollars annually. Everybody freaked out now. That looks super cheap. And if the cowboys had done that they would have the ability to use the franchise tag on either Amari Cooper or Byron Jones win this ultimate sort of hypothetical becomes a reality and they would theoretically only lose one. Maybe not even either. So now the cowboys win till the eleventh hour is going to cost them in a literal financial sense where they're gonNA have to pay Dak Prescott more money and it could cost them in the capacity that they are now going to lose Byron Jones. And maybe even Amari Cooper now I should say that there is a a ray of hope. I suppose because you know look you may think this and I don't mean new but I mean I mean other person the other person here my think Jerry Jones is just. You know the cowboys. They don't know what they're doing. They're messing up. But there is a possibility. Because Jerry Jones is typically a big proponent for things like this the specialty. Nfl adding another wildcard round and round and other wildcard teams. A seventeenth game that is upping the value for every NFL owner. Jerry Jones is obviously very involved when I was on. Espn San Antonio on Thursday. We head John Maclean from the Houston Chronicle legendary. Nfl reporter one of the best. Ever do it and I John. I said look you know. Is it possible? The Jerry Jones kind of knew that this was coming that he was going to lose his ability to use both tags and somewhat prepared. Here's John Maclean said on. Espn Antonio John. You mentioned the The franchise transition tag loophole. That may be filled up and unavailable to the cowboys. Now maybe I'm giving Jerry Jones and co a little bit too much of the benefit of the doubt here. But in your estimation do you think that they you know Jerry Jones at least and we don't know the way the votes win but that he would seemingly be at the very least somewhat in support of this which would negate the ability to tag to players if he did not have a plan in place to at the very least keep one or two of these. You know high price three free agents. They have Adak Amari. I'm Byron Jones before the Franchise. Tag deadline that that's a great point. Jerry Jones. One of the movers and shakers in driving this agreement and even though it could hurt him. But I think Jerry all along you can't keep everybody I expect them to Cape Prescott and probably Cooper if Byron Jones those on the market. He's got a chance to be is defensive defensive back in yesterday I think teams are going to line up to give him a record-breaking deal. I don't think they would do that. With the Mario Cooper. There's too many good receivers. It's a great year for receivers coming out the draft. It's a good year for corners. If you don't mean Horn and the top after the first round so say they let Burne Jones go say the replacing with a cheaper free agent or they go after a corner in the draft and they can even train them they might have their pick of all of them no big deal John Maclean said it was a great point no big deal deal no big deal but anyway I think that if you're looking again if you're trying to be positive trying to be optimistic. I think there are two things to note one is that this is not probably not a surprise to cut the cowboys. Brass right like they had to have known that the collective bargaining agreement could be You know a a new one could be struck and therefore the ability that they were potentially leaning on to utilize both tags would be rendered moods and so they had to potentially be prepared for that. Maybe they all prepared for that. Maybe the preparedness is the preparedness to lose both Byron Jones in Amari Cooper. Who knows the other thing is that Adam schefter head tweet about this where he said Some something to the effect of if there's a new CBA expect a flurry of roster moves. And it's possible that you know we. We've heard so much about how different players in different guys and especially quarterbacks are awaiting the new CBA strike new contracts because they want a piece of whatever. The new percentages that players are going to get and whatnot and so we'll see so it also is possible that maybe the deal lanes right after the new. Cba struck because maybe DAX team is waiting for a new CBA to all to make their move. So who knows? But that's the positive side of things if you're trying to be positive so it is what it

"So I I think it does add pressure, but at the same time, it's not really Rick Barnes fault. That UCLA wanted to pay him a bunch of money. It's also John cale Perry's fall that UCLA was trying to basically throw the Hoover dam at him. You know to get him to go there at one point. So I think it does add pressure. And it is interesting that the football coach Tennessee will be making a million dollars less per year, maybe than the basketball coach, but you know, that that's what the market's gonna pay you. And if you wanted to keep bars that was your price tag. So it's either you have Rick Barnes, and you pay him a lot and put more pressure on him or you start from ground zero with another coach. And I'd probably rather have the the former of those was there or has there ever been a time when the football coach made less than the basketball coach, I think during one or two years toward the end of Bruce Pearl's tenure, I think that was the case I I have to go back, and look, and I was thinking about that earlier today. I think it's not unprecedented at Tennessee. But it's it's certainly rare. But then again, I mean, if you know if Alabama or Georgia had come throwing the moon it Jeremy Pruitt, you know, Tennessee was gonna have to do the same thing to keep in. Let's just kind of what the market dictates. And I'm sure as soon as he makes or has it good year that will be taken care of pretty. Quickly. Oh, yeah. There's there's no question about it. I mean, people this is the market, and you know, Jeremy Pruitt's the guy who has the in the business. I know there's some people Georgia who think he was a big Meany pants back in the day. Everyone that I've talked to remember all that. Yeah. Yeah. All that stuff. But, but apparently, you know, everyone you talked to in this business, whether it's high school coaches, whether it's other football, you know, college coaches, NFL coaches, Jerry, Pruitt's guy, who's got a a lot more respect than I even would've fought the business, and I'm just being candid when I say that. So if he does produce it Tennessee you've ever really people are going to try to get him. Yeah. I remember all the the former Georgia quarterback. And all the the Georgia aficionados were trying to come at him. Like, he wasn't ready for this job. We looked like he's he's more than ready west. Thanks so much. Always great to have you on hope you'll come back soon. No problem anytime, Paul, you know, that thank you for listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. "So many spring games. Not enough time to talk about them all but we have west Rucker on. And he'll help us better understand what? Jeremy Pruitt faces in the seats in west great to have you on so many stories going on Tennessee. We almost forgot about spring football that the game still scheduled, right? Paul. Yes. Mother nature might open up and swallow it whole, but you know, at this point. Yeah. It's just another week at Tennessee. It is amazing though with the rig Barnes situation. And then Kelly Harper football has taken somewhat of a backseat everywhere. But let's hear right to it. And and see we may learn something tomorrow. But what have we learned so far during the spring? Well, I think we learned that that it's you know, to to coin the term from from Pruitt's mentor there the process is ongoing. The it's, you know, the they needed to get a lot bigger a lot stronger up front on both sides of the ball. They've made some strides toward doing that. They're not quite there yet. But it's a step in the right direction. I mean, they kinda to me last year this time, I'm not gonna go so far say hopeless. But they didn't look like there was a lot of hope there this season. There's a little more hope there this time. I think they have a little bit more to work with. I think they're a little bigger stronger. Physical more mature all that. But this isn't a ten when team or anything. But I think they've they've taken some nice steps in the right direction. If you had to break break down the different sides of the ball, the different units. Where would it? How would you do that? And and I'm really interested in the in the process in terms of the the the progression there. Well, I I think that you know, what they do have at Tennessee. And they've had it since Kerr out. There is a really good coach and staff and when you add a guy like Jim Chaney to the mix as offense coordinator, a guy who can run it through it do both always been able to kind of work with the tools that he has at his disposal that that's a major upgrade. I mean, they've got to seven figure coordinators there now and expectations come with that. But I think that gives you a chance these guys have experienced I I really really liked what they've got some positions. I really really liked that wide receiver core. There's a few future pros there. A lot of experience. Lot of upperclassmen talent, which is really nice including kidney dos. Palmer who I've been saying for a couple of years now, everybody's gonna know this big Canadian at some point. I don't know when but in some point people are gonna know about this kid. He's really good. And I think the the biggest stories though, what this team up front offensive line wise, they had to come a million miles. It really couldn't go down. It could only go up. I think it's done that a little bit. I think they've had a couple of guys come on this spring and do some good things defensive line, though is still where where I have the biggest question, Mark. And that's a place. You don't wanna have questions that they've gotten numbers there that got bodies? I don't know how many separators they have right now. Our how many game winners they have their. So when you look.

"And I think that that is kind of paying off with the rest of the team around them. If you look at that game last year, they got into the fourth quarter. It was a one possession game. I think Florida was unsure whether or not they could win that game Georgia new they could win that game. So the mental hurl is where Florida's trying to get it over. And I think some of that confidence that Dan. Mullen has we know he's confident every asset every aspect of his life. But talking about Georgia the way as an off season. I think it's kind of permeated throughout the entire team the recruiting class was outstanding this year in the momentum the game with ten wins only gonna continue to help that on the recruiting trail. Finally, we all know, Dan Mullen was an assistant in a protege under urban Meyer. But. It just seems to me that he's becoming Steve Spurrier. I know you've played for Spurrier. I'm interested in where you come down on that. It's amazing. Isn't it that you make that comparison because as we talked about taking shots at your rivals? He took one at Florida state the other day when they talked about the announced attendance. Sometimes we'll go maybe with forty one thousand fourteen people with a with a a shot at at at Florida state last year, the forty one fourteen victory over the Seminoles. He talked trash about Georgia early in the year. I think those things are very reminiscent to me the guy that I played for and coach for the confidence to as I mentioned at permeating throughout the team. We kind of took on some of that swag that coach spur your brought when he was our coach and felt like we had to back it up on the field. And I kind of get that same sense that this team in this growth process what help them last year. The most was that confidence that Dan Mullen had they seem to be a different team this spring from what I saw twelve months ago. And I I love the fact that that Dan Mullen and coach barrier so similar I love the fact that coach. Spurs in this building. They have a chance to talk and spend some time with one another. So for me being a lifelong gator having played for coach for to see a guy that almost mirrors. What what coach did during his time? Here makes me excited about the future for Dan Mullen. We watching tomorrow Chris joining us from Gainesville. Thank you, Chris. Thanks, paul. Appreciate you, man. Gators are hot and gave her fans. I'm sure pretty excited by that. That was a that was an upbeat assessment of the spring look ahead to the season for the Florida Gators. You're listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. "Listening to Paul finebaum show podcast, peaceful hurt covering Alabama for many many years joining us as spring begins to come to an end tomorrow in Tuscaloosa, say-so, always great to have you on. And thanks for the time. Let's get your assessment of what the spring has looked like so far. Well, we don't get to see as much of it as we used to. But Nick Sabin that all brings are good that this spring was good. I think though, judging from his demeanor and some of his comments is he is happier relatives to Nick Sabin happiness. Gale. Last year when it was, you know, dynamic going onto what really practicing last spring because of his hand, and Jalen was. The number one quarterback in terms of spring practice, and he had to deal with that. And he's always more comfortable in some ways when their when their motivation is taken back the championship rather than defendant the championship. It's an easier. Motivational direction for him to show guys. Look what happens if you don't take it seriously than to sort of deal with what he calls the entitlement of having won it on that on that front to with a surly receivable, and he went right into that. Wheelhouse of the players were felt like they were entitled late in the season. He felt like they they almost needed a a loss, and they didn't get that. Of course, came pretty close. And as a result, they just weren't doing things as well. They weren't working as hard. They were missing little things. And he believes that turned into the disaster better known as the national championship game. You saw every step of the way I wonder what you saw as the season was winding down because I it did seem to be a surprise. Even the national championship game shock, nearly everyone. It did and credit to Clemson first of all for for play. Well. You know, you can analyze what we're what what went wrong for Alabama without taking away from Clinton performance. There's some things we're going wrong for Alabama down the stretch. Probably. It seemed in. This is hindsight is twenty twenty hindsight. It seemed like in a lot of ways the emotional peak of the season was the winner LSU with all that hoopla emotion and so forth and Alabama went down there dominated that game. Didn't play didn't play as well after that didn't play char. Fiddle played okay against Auburn at home. Not great fortunate in some ways, certainly credits. Jalen hurts but fortunate to win the championship game. I couldn't get Oklahoma stopped in the second half of that game. But had enough of the lead in Oklahoma. Couldn't stop him either. So the the early lead held up, but it was like it was like going around the track at Daytona..

"So I mean, I experienced a transition from Mike Shula to Nick Sabin the took a year for the guys to all start going in the same direction. I it didn't take them a year here. There was no grace period. They actually won more games. I think most people thought they would and going into this year. There's an awful lot of momentum based on how they played in the final month of the season. So I think he's really optimistic about the type players are bringing the quality of player that they're bringing in. They just had to get the depth online with some of the best teams in the country, and that happens with multiple recruiting classes that are going to be ranked in the top five. And and I certainly have a lot of faith that jimbo's going to continue to recruit at a really high level. Everyone is in has been talking about the schedule. I mean, it's self explanatory. It's certified insane. When you think about maybe three of the top four teams in the country on the schedule. Yeah. To on the road and. Alabama's at home. And we asked I think Billy Lucia yesterday. This was a talk show question as you do. And no of those three at Clemson at Georgia and Alabama home of if you had to pick one to to pull the upset, and he thought it was Alabama at home. I don't know. I mean that's not by the way. That's not an easy question to answer. But. Kyle field enough to to get this team over that hump. Do you think I mean, that's? That's a tough question. Paul. I mean, homefield huge I in college football. There's no doubt. And I've always been a huge believer that it's tough to go on the road. But if I'm listing the places that that I think I have a real chance to pulling off an upset out of the group that you just list, I think going on the road at Clemson is a realistic possibility to Clemson is still replacing some really key pieces along the defensive line at that point. Yeah, they still have good players. But maybe they're not clicking on all cylinders like they were at the end of the season last year. Now, Trevor Lawrence is back. So I think that's going to be a tall ask. And if if Tex CNN were to lose every single one of those games that you just listed does that mean that they have stalled in regards to getting to where they wanna go. No because it's still early in trying to recreate who Texas M wants to become. But if there was I mean, if I were to, you know, jockey him up and line them up with the most likely upset to the least likely upset. I would say clad Clemson would be one because it's early in the season, and maybe clemson's not firing on all cylinders Alabama..

"It's a really fun time to be down here. We'll let's talk about what you'll be looking for in the nation. We'll be watching tonight. Certainly I think we know the quarterback situation is in good shape. But take us through the variables on what else the aggies are keying on and what they need to improve on as well. Well, let's start off. They wanted to keep doing a lot of what they did last year. Now, they do have some guys that are a little beat up with injuries. So we're not totally sure who's gonna be full go and who's going to be partial go for tonight's scrimmage when it comes to running backs in the wide receiver so still trying to wait to figure out how those things are going to be sorted out. But what they're wanting to be more physical. Continue preaching the same message that JIMBO Fisher began preaching last year. I asked him point blank. I said how far away are you from Alabama? That's the truth. That's the question. Right. Because if you're going to pay someone seventy five million dollars, your expectation level is national championships. And right now, the gold standard throughout the SEC of the Alabama crimson tide. Although Georgia's extremely close. So I asked him point like how far away are you? How far away is this roster from being on that level? And he said we're recruiting class away potentially. But with some of the guys we have arriving here in the summer. We might be there sooner than we think. So he's very optimistic about the trajectory. But still making sure that the guys on the team or continuing to buy it. And he thinks it takes about two years to lay the foundation of the program, but he likes the direction that they're heading. So offensively they're really moving with some good things. But they might not be at full strength then defensively. Coach Mike Elko really wants to make sure that they stop thinking so much playing faster and having a better understanding of what they wanted. To do defensively. Now, they lose some key pieces in the front. They're still gonna fill those guys with some really talented players. So I'm not at all worried about their defensive line linebacker. You lose some key pieces as well still pretty talented in that group. And then in the back end they were not very good last year. So the only way to go on the backhand is up based on how they perform down the stretch. That's just show which I think your questions appropriate, and he would know. In terms of how far away from Alabama. But if they are reasonably close, that's quite a quite a jump. Would you not agree? I I've said this for a while. Now, Paul I firmly believe that JIMBO Fisher will win a national championship here. I really believe that now is that going to be in the next two years. I don't know that. But I look at how they recruited in this last cycle in the positions of need. They addressed they've fortified the secondary with Jacoby addition and some solid young players that they feel really good about. They have a lot of really good players alone. The defensive line they have a capable quarterback, and they really liked the freshman quarterback who's competing for the backup job right now. So they have things that are already in place that takes most programs years to to try to figure out. So there ahead of schedule. And I think he was really really pleased to with the way the guy's bought in last year. I asked him I said, honestly, usually it's a tug of war when you had Kevin. And then you go to JIMBO Fisher, it's two completely different personalities that would probably recruit two completely different players..

"Yeah. And you know, they can maybe push it a little bit. If they get lucky on the weather, doesn't, you know get dark, you till know little before eight o'clock, they have pushed it before. But you know, I'm sure they prefer not to do that, especially if there was a playoff situation. So you know, I can't speak for Augusta National. I don't know what they're gonna do Sunday as far as pushing the t- times. I guess that's a possibility. But right now, it's it's certainly not beyond the realm of possibility that will be playing on Monday. Here it talking about it. I mean, I I remember being over there twenty five thirty years ago. I'm sure you are too. I think it was when Faldo was in the playoff with Scott hope. I mean, I I thought they're gonna have to bring some cars off the parking lot with with headlights because I mean, you couldn't see out there. Yeah. Yeah. You know? And would you watch on TV? They, you know, they have those apertures open all the way aperture. Yes. Yes. Eight. I impressed six. From Tennessee said that. It looks. It looks brighter than it really is here. So yeah, they'll push it. But but without weather, it's it's can be very interesting to see how goes now. Of course, you know, we're not we're in twosome's instead of pre sums up that point so things move along a little quicker. But yeah, that's going to be an interesting day whether wise. Yeah. Well, we will be watching, and Gino, I don't know if these apertures raptures, whatever it is we sure pitchers, okay? There you go. You know, I'm not even the communication major. Let's first of all talk about about the moving this game. Oklahoma did the same thing. I know there was there's bad weather is it is it are they going to be cleared by the time. The game ends is not I guess my first question. Yeah. Paul. I first of all it's great to see you. I've missed you very very much, and if thoroughly enjoyed your basketball coverage, but it's time to get down to the details of what we're doing here in college football. So welcome back, my friend. Thank you looking at everything going on with the weather. It was the right decision. It looks like Saturday is going to be absolutely brutal. When it comes to the storms that are rolling across Texas and really throughout the middle of the country. So. It was absolutely the right. Call what's crazy about it though? Is today Texas A&_M seniors are getting their rings today. There's a baseball game. There's a tennis match. There's a track meet there is a softball game. Like, there's more going on in college station today than I think is on a college station in the last several weeks. So it's a big day to be an Aggie..

Sunday's today that a lot of people are really concerned about can you give us your best ga-, not your? I mean, what what people are saying about what could happen Sunday in terms of the bad weather yet palm doing what everybody else here is doing including the players. We're looking at Weather Channel whether dot com. Trying to figure it out, you know, a day or two earlier it looked like one hundred percent chance of rain that whole day. Now, it's kind of gone downs. You know, eighty ninety percent not a lot last time. I looked at said it was going to start kicking in bad around two o'clock on Sunday. So that's usually when the leaders tee off around here. So you know, what we'll gust to national adjust with a move up the times on Sunday to begin earlier. Will they take a chance on the weather? Will we be here on Monday? Those are all possibilities right now. But stands at the moment Sunday does not look like a great weather day. Yeah. Melissa near have been some Monday finishes. But. All the majors. This is the one you don't want finishing on Monday morning, Monday afternoon. I mean, it's just supposed to end at seven o'clock on Sunday night. Isn't it? Yeah. "And you know, I I am satisfied with where I'm at as terms of, you know, hon- feeling health health wise, but you know, as far as things that I can work on. I mean, you know, there's this still being that that I can work on this stuff things that needs to be kinda revamped and with gosar occasion and his fear. I mean, I think they're doing tremendous job helping us. Let's let's let's pick up on that. Because if you're in Alabama quarterback over the last couple of years, it's very likely you've had a couple of different coordinators. I don't mean that disparagingly. Just there'd been changed as you know, you've worked with coach Sarkissian before described to us what it is like working with him. And how you think maybe he can help you. Well, you know, I think. To me. You know, just you know, from the inside coast Kosar is he makes the learning environment pretty easy now only for me, but for the quarterbacks in the in the room and for the offense as well. You know, I think he's a he's a relationship kind of person a people person he's four what we want. You know, you he tries to do everything to help us succeed. I mean, and, you know, just having him here where grateful, you know, the past coaches that I've had you know, in co stable and coach locks everyone has their own kind of you know, way of how they called their plays. A way of how they go about doing things, you know, and it's just what you liked best. And you know, I think Kosar is kind of implemented both of what co stable head what Kosar or what coach Loxley had and kinda implementing his live pay, you know, kinda on offense this year. So you you you stepped into an arena. The national championship game where there was so much attention on you. I mean, there were descriptions and comparisons. You may have heard some of them maybe it did. And I was I was on a show New York and an analyst said that you were very likely to become the next LeBron James in terms of what you were capable of doing. And I say that endeavours to you. But also wonder what all of that was like when when you became the center of the college football universe. Yeah. I I didn't really hear too much of all those things..
