China announces regulations for 'unreliable entity' list

"China says it's instituting new regulations that could bet blacklist foreign firms that Beijing says unfairly treat Chinese companies or pose a threat to China's national security. NPR's Emily Fang reports. The announcements come a day before the U. S blocks to of China's biggest mobile APS, TIC TAC, and which China has not yet announced which companies will be labeled what it calls unreliable entities. Firms that threatened the development of Chinese companies trying to announce it would compile a list of unreliable and titties right after the US put Chinese telecom company hallway on a trade blacklist this spring. In May, Chinese state media suggested that American firms including Apple, Qualcomm, and Cisco, would be considered first for the list. And while China's future unreliable Zen titty list is not explicitly aimed towards countering American companies or individuals These regulations come the day before the U. S. US bans WeChat, TikTok from app stores, threatens shutdowns

"I A wrap up of the big economic stories of the week and let's just dive on in. Shall we on his Watson is with the New York Times Catherine Reimpell is at the Washington Post to. Hey There So. Let's actually start you heard at the top of this conversation about TIKTOK. And we chat what do we think are the potential ripple effects culturally economically and otherwise of something like this I'll start with that. I'm GonNa Picture Yeah of course of course I've been writing about this today. So this is the unprecedented ban on some really popular services in. So I think the potential ripple effects are really interesting. Know first of all these APPs will the government isn't going to go out police, people and make them delete the apps from their phones but these APPs will start to degrade for users here in the United States functionality will get weaker and you know so that will affect people of people's us There's questions about whether there will be Chinese retaliation at China already blocks of American services like twitter and facebook. But there are other things that the Chinese government could do to penalize American companies I think it raises questions that whether we'll see more bands like this on other Chinese companies, Alibaba. For example, and then Wesley just taking a big picture view we seem to be headed toward a situation in which what we think of as the global Internet is breaking down into a lot of different Internet's with different roles for the US for China for Europe and for a long time, we thought about the internet breath down borders, connecting people around the world. But actually now, it kind of seems to be fracturing both do the nationalism and security fears. Catherine I think that's you know. Moving on from just these two APPs in this conversation, this is this is a big precedent to set in some ways. It's the US government taking a stance very similar to the Chinese government, right? Saying these are the kinds of businesses that will be allowed to operate here. How does that send me look for the Global Economy Yeah Well there are a number of complications that could arise from this right I mean you have First Amendment legal challenges already arising here within the United States you have the risk of businesses not being able to conduct their normal operations, wherever they are, and so their businesses already complained obviously about having to deal with different regulatory regimes Once they cross borders even if they are a company that digital. Company. For example, that does not operate strictly within the fiscal borders of any one country this is this is going to complicate their lives much more. And you could imagine that is on points out there could be further retaliation that just adds even more uncertainty for businesses as they're trying to. figure out how to operate within China within the United States stay on the right side of the law avoid offending. Any minder as it might turn him. I mean that said on a are these concerns real even if the data collection part is overblown it, there's no question that we chat and take talk in some ways. Can represent the viewpoint. Of the Chinese. Government. Right. Yeah I think when it comes to data collection you know cybersecurity experts, kind of debating how much of a risk there is i. mean. It certainly does could give the Chinese government access to some data and Chinese laws require that you know Chinese individuals Chinese companies submit that data to the Chinese government if asked. So part of the issue is a Chinese laws on that subject but there a lot of mobile services that collect a lot of data you know about Americans. That we haven't maybe thought about systematically the other argue the other argument here though is about the Chinese. Government's ability to censor put out propaganda and I think when you look at, we had it is clear that it is a conduit for for censorship in for propaganda it's also vitally important a communication system for the global Chinese diaspora but the Chinese government definitely has a say in shaping what reality like on that platform.

TikTok and WeChat: US to ban app downloads in 48 hours

"This morning the Commerce Department announced that it will ban US downloads of and business transactions with Tik Tok and we chat on Sunday. So are these stories don now probably not even close quoting CNBC, the announcement comes ahead of an expected statement Friday by President Donald Trump on whether or not the government will approve a deal for Oracle to take minority stake and TIKTOK and become a trusted technology partner for the company in the US. It's unclear if the Commerce Department's announcement means there's no possibility of a deal going through. Before this Sunday deadline, it could be an aggressive move from the trump administration to push for its original intention to force Tiktok to become fully owned by a US company. The Commerce statement said that starting Sunday US companies will be banned from distributing we chat tiktok meaning the two major mobile APP stores run by apple and Google will have to remove the APPS from their libraries. The statement also blocks US companies from providing services through we chat quote for the purpose of transferring funds or processing payments within the US and quote. But. The announcement also lays out a separate timeframe specific to tiktok giving it until November twelfth to resolve the US national security concerns the rules that start November twelfth include provisions that block US companies from providing Internet hosting and services. For TIKTOK, this could be directed at the deal being negotiated between TIKTOK and Oracle which would provide cloud services for TIC TAC if trump approves and could give Tiktok and Oracle more time to hammer out a deal that will. US will ban WeChat and TikTok downloads on Sunday

"I want to get the latest on Tiktok from Java's in Washington. Amen Yeah this Commerce Department Action Andrew as you point out applies to both Tiktok and we chat. and. What they're doing is saying this will go into effect on September twentieth that is two days from now unless the president agrees to a deal that's been on the table pending among all these companies to get. American. Control over some of these assets, here's what's in the commerce. Department. These some of the actions that Commerce says they're going to take your on September. Twentieth if that doesn't happen, they're saying that this order would block the distribution and maintenance of these APPs in the United States, it would block mobile funds transactions within the United States on we chat itself it also current US users would be able to continue using the APP software software updates won't be available. So that's all from the Commerce Department. This morning is a lot. Of actions that they're taking just some of them and what this does Andrew I think is is really puts that muscle into that threat that the president said that by September, twenty th, there's no deal we're shutting these things down. This is the US government now using its legal authority to do exactly that on Sunday and the big question mark year is going to be. Over the weekend can there be some kind of resolution here. That's going to check all the political economic and technological boxes that have to be checked in order to make this thing happens back to you before you go I one real question which is as I've been looking through this this release and I. Don't know if you've had an opportunity to to to see what seems like a very strange discrepancy it says, as of September twentieth that would be the Sunday four we chat, and then it says, and as of November twelfth for Twenty Twenty Tiktok the following transactions are prohibited and it goes through a list. Does that mean that there's more negotiating time? Somehow on the table for dance and tectonics that sounds like what it implies based on the language that you just read Andrew. But I don't know why there would be a separate timeframe for tiktok on that point and believe me we're trying to get US officials talk to us about this right now to to explain exactly what's been done here. we know that they're going to explain this throughout the course of the day to day we'll. We'd like to do as all these companies are being impacted. Moment to moment right now is is talk to them and get us get them to explain it to us right now.

Australia's Victoria reports lowest COVID-19 cases since June

"It's really encouraging to see the numbers really coming down quite low in Victoria we've been waiting a long time for it people in Victoria have been waiting a really long time for it, but there does seem to be the stubborn tile. What does the last push of the Victorian plan to get rid of COVID? What does it entail? Well, it's entails really. Targeted approach because it's not evenly spread across Greater Metropolitan Melbourne. So if you look at a map southeastern suburbs around the local area of Casey those an increasing number of cases there, or there's a steady number of cases they are The sole interest of active cases got fewer active cases in the northeast corridor but the northwest corridor seems to be coming down a bit and when you match Casey with Mobility Datta People armour mobile and it tends to be related to the fact that people. Don't have as much money that area. They've got poor quality jobs more casual jobs need to travel, and they're out and about in public transport. So the potential for spread in somewhere like Casey is much greater than say in the inner eastern suburbs of Melbourne where people tend to be staying at home. Not traveling quite as much. Does that mean that there is maybe a a welfare solution to this if the people they're not able to stay at home for socioeconomic reasons is there more intervention that can be done there. Well, they're already our interventions in Victoria in terms of support if you're tested positive I think that there needs to happen is already happening, which is more intensive testing in those areas and targeting you need to have I. Think a system that similar to New South Wales. May Well, be that there's the retorted but I haven't seen it. which is that if you live in New South Wales, you know exactly which Jim I mean people aren't going to gyms but the the May will be tram or train that somebody got onto or a shop that he went into and much more alerts. So that people who've been in the same area know that they are it also needs community development dense the community onside community leaders people to come forward. We actually had a question on this from David. Saying. What are some of the epidemiological reasons for the stubborn tile of the reduction in infections that is cases dropped swiftly after lockdown but then they flatten out it is these the reasons that play into this you can't really separate epidemiology or biology from the way we live pandemics are not a biological phenomenon purely, yes. You got to have a bug that evolves, but it's all about our behavior and how interact with the JEREM whether it'd be tumor virus. So. Epidemiology that exquisite junction between society and biology, and that's what you've got here. The more biological reasons here is our that almost certainly the still virus circulating circulating amongst younger people who are either to matic or don't have very many symptoms all not coming forward for testing and that asymmetric spread that that iceberg phenomenon is what might be driving part of it but it's not driving it strongly because numbers are coming down

Get in with apple in terms of these radical protection, because it just seems like it's something that would make sense to do right. Yeah, there's a lot of pressure all across the industry both from the government the it's been very very strong in terms of how it wants carriers and manufacturers to fight robocalls. There's a protocol called. Stir shaking. T. Mobile's basing its new technology on that. Jeff is calls in a bunch of the doctor this to make sure that. To really try to help stop the BOBA onslaught that we're all facing. I fully expect that at and T. and T. mobile will be involved with us at some point as well as you know integrating this with Google android. It's something that everybody seems to be wanting to do your curious to see what the underlying technology here because if it is start shaking, that is, it's an industry standard right? Every every carrier has adopted in fact they they are mandated to adopt to stir shaken. Think by the middle of next year so there there's a deadline they're so. I'm curious if There's anything unique to a variety a nap or doing, or if this is something that t mobile not can jump on as well be an interesting thing to to find out and I'm sure we'll learn more as we get closer to becoming generally available later this year. But again it's right now. The trials with verizon, but fully expected this to be open to everybody. It's not like apple to limit it to just a particular carrier when it comes to a feature. Not and verizon also reported earnings this week. What did we learn? A busy court at and t. a particularly busy one. They had quite a lot going on in addition to the. Announcement of its five G.,.

"That year so we spent a lot of time. eating Rama noodles. We spent a Lotta time macaroni and cheese and we are I guess our gift to each other was finally paid on a credit card payment enough of the minimum payments that we had enough to actually go out and get a meal that we can split, so you guys earned eleven thousand dollars the entire first year. Correct and I want everybody out there listening who can relate to the story to know this is how it always starts, so let's just make sure we're getting some context here. We all know the story of Fedex but a lot of people don't know that Fedex did not did not make a profit for over a decade. We all know the name, ESPN but very few people know. THAT ESPN did not make a profit for over ten years. We all know Amazon, but very few people know that Amazon did not post a profit for ten years. We all know of Tesla. We all maybe don't know. They did not make a profit for over ten years. Somebody should write that down. Because we were competing with the ghosts of magazine covers. That aren't real. Everybody out there who owns the business is trying to build a profitable company a matter of weeks or days or months, when in fact, that's not possible brick. How long did it take you to achieve a level of financial? Success that you thought was at least respectable and or decent for having been a chiropractor who went to school for seven years to do what you do. How long did it take you before you thought okay? I'm finally earning a decent amount of money. Pretty much a solid twelve years twelve years, yeah! Yeah, it could have been shorter bit. I was I was a slow to learn so slow to implement things that I had learned even so, Jeff. How long did it take you to build boom to a level where you thought okay this this company's actually going to last is actually going to be here for the foreseeable future. So ours are turned around pretty quick are in our second year. We started doing fairly well. it's amazing and yeah, until we ended up with a a roadblock and a hiccup that happened any kind of reset everything for us our third year in and in from that it took us another year to recover. What kind of a roadblock did you run into? So when we first launched the business, we launched it as agents in other words. If you think of an insurance agent has multiple providers, they can go out and sell to a consumer, and they're going to get paid a commission off of that. That's the way we started the business originally The company that we built their business for we we, we had got to the point where we were about two hundred and fifty thousand dollars a month in commission revenue from one particular company. they just cut us off completely. Why one day notice? No, no notice. told us to go ahead and take them to court They're gonNA use our money to. Battle US and good luck, and so through attorney advice, being young being dumb We just let them ride with it. We were told you know we went after them. They're just going to file for bankruptcy. We throwing good money after bad money and didn't chase it so you've you've had your share of battles for sure so now you're. You've been in business for twenty plus years four years as BOOT mobile. How do you make any money? And now the rude questions start. How do you make? Make money if if Brek decides to switch to you, how do you make money? Okay, so there's a couple of different reasons. This is a common question. We get often so the main reason why we and how we make money and how we can do it for a consumer is the consumer is just one person, and so when you're going to at and T., you're going as one person when I go to at and T, I go carrying forty, thousand, sixty, thousand eighty thousand people. And, so they're gonNA, give me a better price and they're going to give you as an individual. Number One answer number to answer that is the fact that they have a stock market price, and they have to adhere to what drives their stock. They can't drive down. They have budgets. They have their every every every large companies to fat within themselves, and so they have to do something to drive that stock price. Paul Hood, the CPA has bona fide you in? His told me you're not crazy. But. Could endorse mill. There's people out there that have got to be thinking. It's crazy. Jason Visa's GonNa. Come on here and just assault you with rough questions, okay and Beasley. Who Are you? Who's your phone carrier? Who Do you have? Team Oh. We got people I got T. mobile yet t mobile what you spend per month on your phone Bill Jason. Just See here. One sixty. Okay, so one sixty, so let's go with here Steve. You're sitting down right now with Jeff. This is a one on one. It's a sales pitch. Okay, he's corner okay, and for whatever reason he's. He's meeting with you seriously, and he's meeting with you and your with at and T. and T. T. Mobile, right, verizon t mobile verizon to let's say I wanted to move my t mobile line over to you. I've got an IPHONE. Ten can do that. Absolutely. Do I need the the mini Sam or a small Sam or the large semi noticed on your website. You pick which Sam you want, right. And so you would have the Nanno Sim the Nanos him. Yeah, okay. That's what it'd be called, so if I switched that over, I noticed on your on your plans. Because I I actually do use this as a secondary phone so. You could probably do I mean he had like a bunch of different plans? We do so we. We try to make it very easy for the consumer to pick something that fits their needs the most. Take so the misconception for all consumers. None of you actually know what us. Right. y'All think that you know what you use. Well, we I'll say this on behalf of team. We'll call it team. beat us. I have no idea what us. All, go all go there. Also I I give you one mega point. So, if I guess what I, worry about and I'm trying to understand this is steve or to switch over from T. Mobile? Let's just say he's paying one hundred fifty a month per line for T. Mobile Kenny. Actually save money.

"To know about I'll tell you more about that of course in our T. mobile unlimited list your line is now open and that's one triple eight eight to five fifty to fifty forced way to join us in just a quick reminder is that you can always schedule a time to speak with me here on the show easy to do head over to the website hit the buttons as be a caller fill out the form and mighty Mandy is gonna be calling you back and send you out all right so we've been hearing a lot about uber drivers English drivers and other gig economy workers that you know have really had the rug pulled out from underneath them as it has for many of us and on the line we have Chad who is a gig contest hi there Chad Hey how you doing so you are now working for Instacart yeah I've been working prescribe for about a year but I'm working towards a car pretty much exclusively these days and so just so everybody's familiar Instacart you well we'll go do all your food shopping and then and then delivered to your house right yep mostly grocery stores you can also order from petco and some liquor stores still well there you go we have liquors product I heard liquor sales are like off the roof right now I know means greasy so I don't really know sister are you haven't how are you staying safe I'm I'm washing my hands all the time like before and after every shop that I do a lot of stores they have employees out front that when they bring the cards back in they they spray on and wipe them down they have tape on the floor like at the checkout registers that shows you you know every six feet to you know that this space customers from each other and a lot of customers I notice are wearing masks and gloves I'm not but you know a lot of people are how come you're not when I read it doesn't really do that much it's more about like master more about if you're sick it helps from keeping other people from getting sick and your goal of this is like every time like if if they're infected with something and you touch something then it goes from the glove to whatever you touched and vice versa okay actually in the car and door dasher bowls sending hand sanitizer and disposable gloves out to their contractors to request it so how much are you making well I will say that I made more and in the last like two weeks and I have been a long time is that right yeah I was a virgin almost doubled my hourly rate because people are taking too much advantage of the services and equipping really nice now too thank you I'm not I was that was one of the questions going to ask you are they are people tipping more now it certainly seems like it and Instacart customers they can change their tip for up to three days after delivery and I've noticed that lately ballers and I'm seeing L. five ten dollar extra tips from two three days ago thank you Sir we have been doing that well you know what because you're really providing a valuable service I mean especially to the elderly who should not be going to the grocery store right I mean there should be a a lot of people say that you know before the the just say No drive safe and like now they're like oh thank you for your service Sir they'll be safe out there and all that stuff so are people still buying a lot of toilet paper if you can find it Hey I haven't seen toilet paper in about a month and the stores but like their cashiers and store managers I talk to the baby wants all the paper we have to be outside the door when they open what do you see what you see is different in orders now than say three months ago well everybody had toilet paper and paper towels and bleach on their list and unfortunately after refund most people on that stuff thanks for shopping but yeah and everybody trying to buy like those Lysol or Clorox wipes can hi to yeah they are it's like I said it's like you want that the don't order I hate to say this but dollar through Instacart because the store went outside before they open and you can get it that way if you order through Instacart or Shipt or any other you know dig up on like that they're not making exceptions are not putting stuff aside for those types of orders so yeah you want to live a better paper tell stuff like that because the store when they open so our people buy more canned goods now yeah a little you can remind me of you know I'm in Florida and yeah we have hurricane season and when it when they think of hurricanes come and everybody starts hoarding up on canned goods pasta and rice and they're doing that now people are people are buying like as if they're expecting the power to go out and I don't have the power to go out but yeah like us candid right off the top it's gonna last a while is definitely in short supply right now you know it's interesting we go back to how much you're making so did walk me through what me through the economics of of somebody places an order how does how does this work I mean do you get paid like you said you get the tips two or three days later right but but how how does that work okay well with Instacart the base pay is seven dollars from them and then it can go up if the customer orders heavy stuff like cases of bottled water especially you get a heavy pay Bob and they also pay sixty cents per mile but they don't really they never revealed like how their pay algorithm works exactly like as far as you know how much the weight equals the actual pay on top at seven dollars and it like in something of a person is a very big order you know like two carts worth worth of food obviously you make more than the seven dollars but didn't they don't reveal on how their pay out of that works plus but if you get the customer step on top of that and but like when you place an order to rent a car at the customer it usually defaults to a five percent tip of like whatever your subtotal is done but then you pay people can like you said people are bumping up especially now you were probably more needed whenever he can't keep safe okay make sure that.

"You do have to go into either the T mobile app or onto the T mobile website to turn on the feature to enable it, but you can certainly turn it on. And so what happens when I get a lot of these calls now is. Is it'll say the number and then it'll say spam or spam likely. I think is the the phrase that they use so mayor maybe a different phrase or sometimes it just simply says call blocked and just let it go to voicemail, and it works very well. So you may actually already have a service and something built into your phone or really your cell phone service that you can use. And so you may not need to pay for one of these third party apps. You could also in addition us some of the features that are built into your phone to kind of help better manage this. Of course, you can block the spam numbers. This could be a little bit futile because they tend to not use the same numbers. Right. That's the whole point of the list is they're constantly changing these numbers. But it is something you could do I do this quite frequently. If I get a spam number go into the phone application, go into the recent tab, find that number. Over and tap, the little I I con next to it. And then swipe up and down at the bottom. You can choose block this caller, and that will add it to your iphones internal block phone number list. And then at least if you get another call from that number. It is going to be blocked. Right. So you can manage that. There's also what a lot of people refer to as the nuclear option, you can leverage the power of the do not disturb feature on your phone to basically create a phone number white list and only allow people from that white-list to actually be able to call you everything else will simply get sent to voicemail. And so this is a good way to handle it. If you don't mind doing it, and you don't mind having to make sure that the contacts, the people in your contacts are always up to date with their latest numbers and stuff like. That the way you do this as you basically go into do not disturb so going to settings do not disturb on your phone and then under the phone section. You wanna set the allow calls from option to all contacts? And then again, just make sure that anyone you want to receive phone calls from is in your contacts with the correct phone number, and that way only those calls will get through now as you're likely thinking if you've ever used do not disturb there are some potential downsides to the nuclear option. First year going to end up silencing all notifications. When you're in do not disturb mode. They're still going to appear in notification center, they'll still show up on your lock screen, but you aren't going to get the audible alerts or buzzes or anything like that for any of your notifications in there is no way to separate general notifications from the phone call stuff. So you're going to be. Operating your phone in do not disturb mode all the time, and that may or may not be something that you want to do the other potential issue is that if even if a person is in your contacts, if they have blocked the caller ID feature for any reason, they might end up going straight to your voicemail in they might not be able to get their calls through to your phone now, not a huge issue because you're gonna find them in the voicemail, and you'll be able to just call them back. But if it was something critical or important that might be a problem. You know, overall, I would say with zoo, I have personally found my carriers service. The thing that I get with T mobile to be sufficient enough to to stop or block most of these phone calls again mine is included with my cell phone plan years may or may not be. So maybe you do wanna turn to one of these third party apps on I'm sure there are likely some free ones out there. I wasn't able to find. Any single one that I felt comfortable recommending to any of you. But if you are using one of these apps, especially if it's a free app, and you're finding that it works. Very very well..

"Out of that the government says no it doesn't actually end up getting rejected by they don't go so far as to actually blocked the deal but the companies realize it's not going to happen they call off aid they indicate that it would be a bad idea for you to stop do the paperwork yeah good idea to stop doing the paperwork so december twenty eleven the t mobile and at call off the merger and t mobile is like in a serious by now so the deal fell through their distant fourth place behind sprint would end like way way behind you've rise in the company is like flatlined it basically things suck morale is terrible so two thousand twelve this was december twenty eleven they coughed the merger two thousand twelve they do two things first they merged with metro pcs which was i think the fifth or sixth place carrier in the us so that gives them a little bit more scale a little bit more coverage because remember coverage is super important at this point national coverage is really important people use their smartphones where in the smartphone era everywhere all the time they travel if you're you only get data in your home city and not when you're traveling that sucks and i think metro pcs unlocked new addressable market for them in terms of like market segment because it was the pay as you go it was the sort of lower cost carrier they could get their infrastructure and coverage and then also sort of a new new segment of people that were able to use the broader merged infrastructure also yup totally and we're not even going to get i'm not going to go anywhere near cellular standards we talked about that on the qualcomm broadcom episode listeners if you care you can go somewhere else.

"Seven gigs of data and unlimited talk and text which is standard on everything now and sprint we had unlimited everything but the service site so i'm looking forward to seeing what the pricing is once they come out once once they have a full merger going on they're going to retain the t mobile title and sprint will be no more the ceo of t mobile will be the ceo of the new t mobile's sprint owned company and essentially wanting to get bigger so that they can play play ball in hardball verizon and eighteen t because they're going to get messy basic it's going to get super messy and they're wanting to essentially combat with the big boys now at this point so the only one that can take over that table by merging two medium size to create a juggernaut and they're by no means as big as eighteen year variety but they can put a nice dent in them now and i'll be looking forward to seeing what they do there wish it the phones were more affordable because i'm currently in the market i really don't want a piece of garbage phone but at the same time i can't afford eight hundred dollar apiece phone so i now i listened to radio station out of philadelphia quite a bit w m anamar and doesn't sprint have deal right now you can get to iphone eight for like zero dollars as long as you're credits.

"That is two point five gigahertz which again four or five years ago people thought that so high frequency it's it's hard to think of how to use it and now that we're talking about frequency bands that are ten times higher than that it doesn't sound so high anymore and now people are saying wait there is real value in that and and that's likely to become the foundation of of what a combined sprint t mobile would leverage to make something different what type of pricing power to these companies have because wireless at least at this stage not technically treated as a utility bought as in any case where sort of everybody has it even in a world is just three companies you'd imagine that these companies only have so much run rate to say halo we we're all going to jack up your cost ten 2030 brazil gets a great question i mean at the at the at the heart of your question is really are these services differential anymore you know if i went back to before 2011 not coincidently before the time that that at t and t mobile tried to merge there were really three dimensions of competition in the wireless industry wireless operators competed on the quality of their network they competed on the on the their handsets election and they competed on price headsets election is an interesting one right it wasn't that long ago that the iphone was exclusive to at t that ver rise and had put all its eggs in the basket of the motorola droid series.

"T mobile is going in the opposite direction t mobile has gone from strength to strength tmobile in 2011 was a there was an attempted acquisition by at t that failed they walked away with cash and a bunch of spectrum and and it's been lights out ever said that we had a breakup fee for that deal fail huge breakup fee and a bunch of spectrum as part of the break and fee and by the way that you'll failing a sort of what kicked off the talks of sprewell an and that's right and we'll talk about that deal failing because at deal of failing has some important implications for sprint t mobile but the bottom line is tmobile ever since 2011 has been getting stronger and stronger and stronger now there's there may be some hints around the edges that that the run that t mobile is on is starting to wind down and that could be one reason why their corporate parent torch telecom is getting more interested in in getting the deal done now but bottom line is they are strong and sprint is weak and you see that in what's been talked about an exchange ratios so the big big question around the steel even if it is in fact announced in a few weeks is the regulatory question and that's where we get into the discussion with at t and t mobile that deal was effectively blocked by us regulators that said at the time we are taking this industry from four major players to three and therefore we feel like that does not pass the antitrust romeo concerns that we have there would be too much consolidation in his industry we're not allowing the steel regulator said the same thing too softbank and t mobile back in 2013 2014 don't even bother trying you're still going four to three the logic remains the same what has potentially happened in the last five years four years three years that the thinking on that is no longer the case donald trump was elected president.

"And it's been soft banks vision to merge sprinting t mobile from the very beginning and and even t mobile has said for their part that ultimately having more scale an and being scaled similarly to verizon and at and t has to be the real and game 4 for their competitive position so you said five years it has literally been five years that not only people have been speculating about this merger but people have been fully expecting this merger i'm the company's thought about it talked about it and came reasonably close end of 2013 early 2014 and at the time we said look it's not going to happen now but it's inevitable that they will try in the next administration whether it's a republican administration or a democrat administration that it was inevitable evola going to try so there's i guess the main headline here is there is no surprise whatsoever in the idea that these companies are seriously talking about merging give us a sense of the states of these two businesses so you know seemingly everybody has a wireless plan these days but there's so much capital expenditure that goes into wireless companies how are these two companies doing well let's let's start at the industry level the industry is not terribly healthy right i mean this is an industry that people four years thought of as a gogo growth industry and i should say that the industry really is agency horizon sprinting t mobile yeah that's basically those four players and and it's not a terribly healthy industry um because it's not a growth industry anymore you know the years of wireless as a real growth engine of the economy um at least from the carrier's perspective are over wireless and this is true in europe by the way as well most of the developed world wireless is already ubiquitous and.
