Roger Kibbe Imagines a World With Reusable Open Source Components for Voice

"It strikes me when i've seen the different voice platforms and this isn't surprising. But they were kind built with a little bit of a web mentality in mind like this is a defined. ui flow the kind of defines. How i do things. And so i built this kind of framework with that kind of thinking in line. I don't blame. The people did it because everyone would do the same thing. Voices new but really voices so dot defined so open. People say things out of order. They can go back they. Can you know we do it. All the time in our conversations and i it feels to me like the existing frameworks sometimes get awfully rigid. Is how they want you to to things that that that then you end up writing an awful lot of code and i to. I hate writing plumbing coat yet. I want something that takes away a bunch of that plumbing for me and then right right interesting stuff we're still with any of the platforms writing a bunch of plumbing code because they haven't been optimized but we're still in early days. I mean look at all. Just go back to your example of the early web alan. It was pretty bad. It was pretty hard in the nineties to write web applications. And it's yeah people people who weren't there at the time don't don't remember what it was like. Yeah they don't and so you've got to give it time to mature and and understand and it's a completely different medium to and so there's different needs there And i was. I was thinking when you're talking about a set of reasonable components. I had a dream reusable source components. Yes very big fan of open source. I think that would be a great Great contribution to the voice community such as snl markup. But you know it's interesting like i wonder if we'll get to a point if you look on the web world and that i mean you can actually go out and buy components that do things and i haven't seen that so much invoice. I know there's like some believe there's a website that launch fairly recently that has a bunch of ap l. examples and actually selling some. I thought that was really interesting. I thought that was encouraging to the industry. If someone could find a way to monetize and create something where there's these reusable components that can be used and they don't have to come from the platform providers me as an independent third party. Developer can create them. Obviously yes beautiful to be open source but also okay. If they're a little closed they're being sold. I mean not just that will open it up a lot and if you look at the web and mobile. There's just so many frameworks it's almost. What framework do i start with.

Allen Firstenberg Describes the Tooling Improvements Needed to Move Voice Forward

"What kind of improvements are needed to move voice forward. I know what i think about tooling. I think a lot about you know i. I do a lot of comparison. So i tend to think what were what were things like in the early days the web or in the early days of mobile development and realize that we're still in the early days of voice development and start making analogies like that. So you know in the early days of web. Go and we were. We were editing. Html text editors and it wasn't until we started to get tools like dreamweaver get systems like content management systems that tied into bigger platforms that we were able to begin to say you know to to really start to get some of the web. The nice stuff out of the web before then it was you know was there and we could see the potential. There was a lot of potential. We kept talking about the potential but it wasn't until we had those tools that we could really start to unleash unleash it so i think that's what we're going to start seeing what we really need when it comes to voice development are tools like voice specific content management systems or the real ways that we can edit. Not just you know the the broad text to speech systems but really be able to edit the audio nuances of what we want to reply with how we want it to sound shape the entire soundscape about our replies and once we start getting those tools and putting them in the hands of people who are not developers and yet still tied in with with the developer systems. Then i think we're going to. We're to start getting to where audio and voice become really really powerful.

Episode 161: Exactly what a murderer would say

"To so max seriously on your recorder for you now you were late. You've got patriot. Supporters to keep happy now man. You can't just like skip a week or anything like that. you know. this doesn't go out live right. i know i know but This is money we're talking about. I don't fool around here you go. Here's a quarter quartering you. What were you doing out in the yard or just sending a few stakes down a little bit landscaping done. Well i mean i'm gonna do the landscaping i look at the time. I enjoy operating the machinery. Speaking of that. I do have a delivery coming. Does this involve some sort of trick to get me to go outside and do some yard work. Because i'm not on board. no. I'm doing the work myself because i enjoy it in between visits to other dimensions can be out there just doing a little landscaping operating little mini excavator. It's gonna be fun. Oh you're having an excavator delivered. Yes that's right. I'm renting one. Oh just for the week okay. So with that comes. While i'm away you can decide point. Just tell them to swinging around back rights okay. There were set up here in the lab. I'm gonna do my whole thing. I high i max. I'm an engineer and inventor and thing here is the bagel trying to thousand which i'm not gonna turn on just yet the bagel trying two thousand opens up portals to other dimensions have been traveling through these portals for over three years visited a hundred and fifty plus different dimensions. I want to say at this point. my log cured so there's been a few duplicates and Yeah it's somewhere in that ballpark. Something different worlds and yet. I'm sure i've just barely scratched the surface of all the different presumably infant dimensions. There are out there jack. Strobe here my roommate is actually from one of these other dimensions. As a the whole thing you can go back and listen to how that happened. But he's here now. And i'm looking up the on list here look right like why haven't turned the biggest two thousand yet the next patron that we want to give a shoutout to is somebody named fluker. Yes pflueger as an interesting name. It is rather unique. I hope you think nice thoughts about him. Because some of these haven't gone so well no they haven't. We did try the whole reverse psychology thinking. That went really poorly. So don't do that again. Nice thoughts so as i turn on the bagel. trying two thousand here in a minute. We're going to be saying out loud. Pflueger had thinking about our patron flu generous patron and hopefully the dimension that we go to somehow involve something good about that sound think. Someone's here. I'm gonna go check it all back in bit. Good luck on your trip. All right i'm going to turn sing on get going. We'll see when i get back. So turning on the battlefront two thousand. While i think about pflueger i'm saying pflueger and thinking good about the good things lugar googlers. Great lugar is the best. Amac's your bob. Cat is here. i'm just going to have him. Put it on the side yard. Oh yeah yeah. that's great. thanks all right. Two thousand is warming up again. He took pflueger. Puerto looks stable. All the rings the machine or nominal ready. I'm going through. Oh gosh wow okay hang on let me show my puerto here and then i'm gonna describe outdoors. Any birds die. You know. I do hear some mangy senate dogs in the distance but i appear to be in a very disgusting looking trailer park as a whole row of single wides laid out here in front of me in various states of extreme disrepair. I'm standing right in front of one heinous off. The roof is sagging a windows. I don't know if they've ever been cleaned. There's nobody around outside here. So i guess i'm just gonna head up to this closest one here and given a knock and see somebody's around you can learn a little bit about this dimension. Hopefully this whole dimension isn't like this. I don't know steps here and knock on the. Oh just just swung open okay. Anybody home hello There's no answer peaked. My head in. Here oh i think oh oh he hit it. Just hit me as a really not a great smell okay. But i'm looking inside. I think i see jack stroke. But he's is he. Hey are you. Okay hey oh. I think something may be wrong here. Okay the stroh sauce lifeless body. that's a still feels a little warm. Were where did it's not war. Remain alive but you should know. Kill them several days. Okay hollow graham jack strobe. I didn't hear you activate. No that wasn't shown. I watch the the crime. I read newer tech novels that the murderer often returns zia the crime. Not okay i for the first person i think back now. Okay therefore you are okay. And i called the rate first off not a murderer. I have never set foot in this trailer nor this entire trailer park before today before moments ago all those as our exactly whatever say. I'm sure it is okay. This is also. You appear to be strobe are you. Some kind of artificial. Intelligence officials don't l. k Are you actually gesture jober. Do you just look and sound exactly like Been hologram many of his memories as his last checkpoint which unfortunately was a month ago. But i do have most of his time doubt for mary's face plus knowledge thing. That's great. what should i call you. You can call me jack. Strove find jack strobe. I'm just gonna head out I don't think there's anything i can do here. Her the knock on the door opened up now if you ever year murderer i don't think this guy here even got murdered. Well then first of all. I'm going to need some facts first of all you name effects your name. What's your name name is max. Max max was that show for max. Essential for anything. Your names just. Max max can be bothered with more syllables. That's fine you over that one. The call yes. Jack strove the whole graham gastro as natural checks out. That's right. he's not. Actually jackson object strobe. Is this guy here. the right. So here's the thing. I was going to ask you if you had any sort of connection to the deceased but it would appear that you already. At least his name. How do you know the deceased name. Sir what'd you say. Your name was max. What's that short for. Max wait now. we did. This dance already. Haven't we the charles the hotel coup. You see what i'm saying. Pal is it. Max how do you know this. Man right yeah. How do i know this guy. When i did say earlier that i've never set foot on this trailer park nor in this very strong for yourself. That's what i told. Jester polygram here. So obviously i met jetro outside of the trailer park somewhere else. We used to work together was we were. Coworkers workers bud me first of all. Where am i. Man is second of all my name actually. This is probably seventh of all. Because i've done a few things. But since i came in here but regardless of what number it is the name is dirk dirk pflueger. Oh excellent detective pflueger perfect yet. Detective works too friendly thing. But you know what i can be bad cop. It's alright this is great a respected member of the local community. I'm so glad you're here because obviously what's happened here is this hologram has confused me for somebody else. I've never been in here before. I was coming here to meet the locals and to check out the local scene and i knocked on the door and it was open and this guy was just here unfortunately deceased so blessed with all of the deceased memories up to about a month ago it's loosely. Drew that max of jack. That's lease a lot onset. They were in a sales. I should say we were stable organization together and jack myself basically stole a bunch of clients from match max mad thing not a theft investigator or fraud investigator. Really a good thing. I'm not any of those. I only specified justin murder. So even if you confess to like any number of crimes today doesn't matter anyway. You're dead continue. So in addition to seal the number of max clients the best terms. Well nothing illegal about that. Last part i did not murder him though. Listen archie gonna like look for evidence or something. I think you'll find that. There's no evidence here that i committed any crime. Well first of all sunny. I wanna let you now something you probably already as everybody knows the first three rules of motor investigation. That's right location. Location location those the rules of real estate and your in the location that i'm in right now which means you're on the location of the dead body. I just wanted to touch base with everyone in my location before i started investigating my location. That's right rule number two location now. We'll get to number three. After i finished examining the location. Is this murder investigation. Is this real estate. It'd be surprised. I often the crossover. Now here's the thing sunny boy. I'm gonna need you to give the facts. Jack. that's right. the facts two of 'em specifically on facts. I wanted to give me something. That's not if that that's something that delight. i want to give me true truths. I don't wanna give me lie. Doesn't have to necessarily be in that order. In fact it's a lot more fun if it's not hanging you said santa boy and you also said jack are you talking. Which one of us were you talking to all right jack in the colloquial sense your jack. Not jack okay. It's also a little confusing because he keeps popping his hologram around the room. Kind of just seemingly randomly chevy stranded like throw me off balance. I appears you are armed straight. I on on low point a gun at your right now. Hey click sound that. We all heard just now wasn't enough to see new. Don't as me bro. listen. I'm gonna slowly take off my backpack through and weapons. What i would add. Is there for self defense. Only i'm setting it down. You can see had no other weapons. I'm not holes during anything we lift up my shirt. Oh wow in fact. I would've asked feed and not do that actually. Wow that's okay. well. I don't really need to see the bag now. Obviously not a threat out law to facts and in fact that's right son sunny boy sunny jack sunny. Just sorry i'll stop saying can fusing because he's jaclyn. You're jack you know what i'm saying. Third base. i'll call you jeremy. You okay with that max Short sounds great. Go ahead jeff. Okay sure fact number one. I am from the city of seattle. Sounders made up but go on fact or maybe not fact number two. I'm recording this whole conversation. That's felony Fact or possibly not fact number three is that i am a professional wrestler right. Now i'm not gonna guess which one of those is alive. Make sure that's clear. I'm just entering all of these into evidence. Now if any of this ends up being used in court and proving a detriment to the prosecution case you'll be fine and prison basically ally investigate that age. Old tactic called entrapment background. Check him and find the wasn't special wrestler. Say wow boylans like honestly can be any number of those. He's real good at this game. But here's what i wanna know maxi boy. That's right. jeremy. Mr travis boy. Here's the thing. What is that hold on the refrigerator. Handle this yeah. I see it as a smudge. A duck smudge looks like some kind of greece on the inside of the refrigerator handle jack but you know anything about this snow. I literally just walked in. Jack jack jack. The one that goes and i can see i around paper. Well that's is that it's not gonna happen any then let me just skirt that different part of the handle it all right Listen to him just showed up here. Maybe we should like. I dunno go to the neighbors and see if any of them saw anything well i was going to make a bit of a more thorough investigation. The contents of this fridge but a pretty much everything. I need to know by now. This cottage cheese shouldn't be this keller. I'm interested in knowing the neighbors of scene because they saw you coming. Maybe they saw going. You know what. I'm saying you probably. That's all right well. I'm just going to walk out the front door here. It's important to get a good smell surroundings. Hey wait a minute. That dollar game. Follow us out of the trailer. Whatever did you like activate upon his death. You knew how long he's been dead for would add as two and a half days. Couldn't have been meek. Because i just showed up. Well can you prove your absence grooving negative. That's another classic law enforcement technique. Ask him to prove a negative. They never can just like you can't right now. Say what's up nope. That's a raccoon. That's just the shoe. i think that's i'm sure that if you speak to the neighbors and the other surrounding trailers none of them will have seen me lough our next door. Who don't mind me interrupting you sir. But obviously you're man coming in and out of your neighbors house recently in the last couple of days does he have. Is this your watch. What i don't know know. I've never seen this guy before my wait a minute. You kind of millions. Talk hussein. sucks out that you look like this guy here. It's hologram year. You look a lot like him for like old wrinkly and gray suspicion seems a little suspicious itself them at. Can't you see that man in there. Who seems to be slightly transparent. It's probably just the drapes obviously has long. Yeah okay so you noticed. I think that's another hologram. Oh i just madrid. Give people the benefit of the third a bother. You say you need to your. He's a fraudster. What's reported to the landscaping crimes. Yeah that's right. This guy only does murder so there. We should be back with you in about a month now to the business at hand. This particular grizzly marta. The man inside that trailer right there. He's dead. I know crazy right now. She's still watching us through the window. I mean it's a big window. I you don't usually see bay-windows like that on mobile homes you do you. Hey you seem like you're living your best life. I don't think he's living any life. I'm telling you he's a hologram. There you can do it. Sturdy admits that he is allah. Graham who's gonna take me flesh and blood human or these holograms whole auster. That's right also. Have you taken a look at this long. It really does look needs mode does not my problem. That's landscaping crafts departments problem. Now i want you to really grasp and just take in the gravity situation. Meant that gentleman is dead. His goose is cooked. Yeah i understand. Ganders been pandered i understand. I'm the one who discovered the body. Now you just you discover the body. That is a real fun way to say it's not fun. It wasn't fun it's reached in there. I don't understand how you didn't seem to notice it at all just walked right in there. Listen here sonny. I've smelled death more times than you could ever dream okay. It's dark and it's changed me as a person. Listen we got to get ourselves back into that trailer right now and investigate the premises just a little bit more. Okay fine now really wreaks it yet. You heard mashed always gets his man and you sir. Are that man. Unless as i suspect you yourselves are in fact another hologram chest. Why why have. I just like that. Oh well that's the easy part of police works on terminating. Whether or not a person standing right in front of you is or is not a hologram. Listen i didn't murder. This guy doesn't look like he's been murdered. I don't see any evidence of actual trump shoot. I should look at the body lipstick on his collar. On my caller. What kind of color lipstick do you wear. I wear lipstick This trailer is packed to the gills with holographic projectors apparently surely there's also like some kind of cameras recording system like surveillance footage. You could just access and see what exactly what happened at good league jack here myself. Change the password since the last check was the face for this. This this this this right here. He can see that says my secret crush thoughts. I thought at every crush. I've ever had as jack in there. Were a lot of and none of them were the right answer. Well let me This is when the deductive powers that i developed over many years of training. Come into play. Hang on let me try something go that was it. Oh what do i. It was orange crush. That's not even secret. That's like the most popular flavor gone with grape strawberry. Those are secret. No one knows about those terrible hen. Man i mean i know it. Wasn't you technically orange crush. Well all right now time. For the moment of truth we're going to hit that play button and watch. That was the wrong button. That does that well the fact that you were the one who pointed me to this file tells me some you you're on the right value. Hit the wrong button. All right five like little. Try mother mom. That's a lady. I mean that's your mom or lady than you'll ever be what is happening now. Did you get the wrong file again. Somehow i guess that's our trailer jetro. I really need to call more often. Looks real excited to see jack. Oh wow oh they're just going right into it right into it. Oh berkeley i thought standards were a bit high o. k. o. But everyone seems to stop moving. She fall asleep well on top of him kissing and then moving to see my flesh twitching. I can barely see that. Most of your body is covered by mrs lugar. There ever got a romantic as. I'm starting to think not hit fast forward. Just hours of detective. Luger's mom laying on top of jack strove. She is a heavy sleeper. She moves she so slow down. Look or well. I mean how do those count is usually an presumably. They don't usually end with him. Being smothered to death. We stopped short death now. I'll be honest. I probably should have recognized that purview. When i first walked in here i've never known another woman to wear. How would you. How did you make a perfume smell in this place. I've got the nose of links or a similar creature. Obviously i did not murder this man. I reluctantly agree that this is probably go well. You would be. If i hadn't cut you in a blatant bald faced lie directly to law enforcement's that's right earlier on you told me. This whole conversation was being recorded. And i know that's a felony and you don't seem like you got the guts to actually do that sir. Unfortunately i'm going to have to take you in downtown ri- right okay. When are we just step outside. Probably yeah that's where my car is. Okay i'm good. I trust you on that. No need to restrain you. Well i guess we'll see. I'll see you later. Probably not hologram. That's probably a good idea to push the button on my remote here puerto goes to another dimension. Which is where i'm from. I guess i could have mentioned earlier. Would have been a pretty solid alibi anyway. I'm gonna head back to my own dimension a bit of a mess. Sorry about that. Yes i am. You've got a lot on your shoe. What was screaming allah right. You can hear that's right. Yeah you the audio portal connection there. So no how right is a porta was opening up. You told me that my excavator was here right. Uh-huh and what did you call it about. JP Poulter and Steve Pearce Discuss the Value of Voice in the Drive-Thru Era

"Have a new report coming couple of weeks time in partnership with our friends at google will show that it. Google Assistant's Rebecca Nathenson: Come Join the Voice Shortcuts Party

"Back in twenty sixteen. We first introduced google assistant because we wanted to help people get things done and we knew that letting them just ask for what they wanted in plain language was the best way to do that since then google assistant has grown to be available in over thirty languages ninety countries and on more than one billion devices hundreds of millions of people every month. Use the assistant to get things done on all kinds of surfaces from mobile phones and smart displays. Tv's cars and more my four year old talks to pretty much everything with a screen expecting to answer and our developers are crucial. Part of this growth. The google assistant team can't build every imaginable capability that our users need those hundreds of millions of users have millions of interests the developers just like you can deliver on for my son's favourite games to our families video chats to that perennial favourite in our household. He google tell me you monster trucks story. in fact queries fulfilled by developers. Apps have more than doubled in the past year and we know that this is the wave of the future as the platform grows the variety of queries will grow to and that's where our ecosystem truly shines. Just want a more natural way to get what they need. They want to get more of what they need. In that natural way it's natural in that users can just say what they want natural because it's not tied to a single device or service natural because with the understanding of context. We and you can be smart about how we step in and help users before the even ask for the help today i wanna share the changes and enhancements. We have coming for every place that google assistant pierce from app actions for android developers to conversational action

Pete Erickson: Analyzing the Room for Conversational Assistants in Daily Life

"Certainly see a day when you will invite a conversational assistant as a third party to the conversation and allow them to Capture data capture biometric data capture information. That is sensitive and also highly relevant to doing verification so the conversation can flow freely between the two humans without putting the cognitive load on the customer service agent who's attempting to maintain a relationship and a positive call experience as opposed to like collecting the nuts and bolts You know there's still a large number of consumers that prefer to do banking in person or on the phone Very large. I think larger than most anticipate expect. And so you know. There's still a lot of opportunity to add intelligence into that conversation and leverage the technology a voice to bring it full circle and And so. I think that there's certainly some some benefits there. What erica is to. Bank of america is huge. It's certainly the trend. That banks are if not applying practically implementing like thinking about spending a lot of time thinking there. 'cause there's a lot of opportunity to improve mobile experience especially when you think about adaptability. There's there's a lot of value there but But yeah we'll see we'll see we'll see how much investments going to pour into the space Over the next few years i think the customer servicing and those types of use cases probably be the majority of the investment over the next two to three years. And then we'll see certainly agree with you there. I think. I think i think the customer service the whole that whole industry is is teeming with teaming with opportunity in the in the boys tech industry and there is a lot of focus in that market both from the major players but then also allow third party platforms and developers and folks as service the call centers bases you know stay tuned for a lot of innovation in those areas.

Implementing Voice Technologies: The Relationship Between Design and Development

"In conversation designed specifically Design and development have to work really closely together. So what data a system stores and in what form it is stored is usually not considered something a conversation designer would have to quote unquote worry about but that is how that all of that stuff impacts how we would write a prompt. Tally would plan certain behaviors. Intents we're going to support all of that feeds into what data we can and can't get and so it's such a good example of like design and development have to sit down and talk about this So that design can be implementable. Limitation matches the design and Certainly like knowing technical constraints is a huge part of how we make our plans. So i'm throughout. The book tried to include conversation starters for designers and developers designers and stakeholders to kind of dig into stuff. Together right. yeah. So it's it's really it's really gonna start impacting software architecture. And how do we architect solutions. So that All the services that are up there whether their voice or mobile or other some kind of application can access things. It's it's it's exciting. Because i think we're entering into that next phase of the of the industry and you know in in the world

The Science Behind That Fresh Rain Scent

"Von. First time shortwave reporter. We're talking geos spin which we associate with the smell of fresh rain fresh oil and you said it comes from a bacteria yet it primarily comes from a big group of bacteria called tina may cds and the men in soil mostly comes from a single genus called streptomycetes streptomycetes. I love that keep going. Streptomycetes have evolved an uncommon survival strategy for bacteria. I mean you're a microbiologist. Indeed what bacteria do when conditions are good. When they're happy well it went. Bacteria are happy. They make more bacteria that's their whole vibe. So one cell splits into two. It's called binary fission right and if you're a type of bacterium that can swim sort of wiggle around before you divide you'll maybe try to situate yourself somewhere with a lot of good food for your offspring but for most of its lifetime. Streptomycetes isn't mobile. So if it's in a location with not a lot of food or if it starving it has to do something else to be sure. Its offspring have a good shot at survival. This bacterium is actually very weird. That's mahmoud abbas. He's a researcher. At university of california san diego and he worked on the same study as close as the starves to make sure that is offering will survive it start to produce doorman cells and these doorman sales can withstand dryness Lack of food and then once the environment is favorable so they have food they have water. They can grow again dormant cells. Okay that that means. We're talking bacterial spores. Which is very exciting. Basically win some. Bacteria are stressed they can produce these tough little cells called spores and those can withstand things that normal bacterial cells probably couldn't survive

Here's What's New With iOS 15

"On monday. Apple kicked off its worldwide developers conference with a virtual keynote detailing the changes coming soon to iowa's fifteen the mobile operating system that powers the iphone now fifteen launch fall. We don't have the exact date yet. And it's time to the release of a brand new iphone. It's typically unveiled by apple in september. So what are some of the most notable changes coming to iowa's fifteen this fall. Let's start here with face time which seems to be getting the biggest facelift too. No pun intended Of all the features that are coming. Ios the biggest one. Though is you can soon use facetime on android and windows but not in the way that you think. The company is adding facetime links for sharing scheduled call so kind of works like zoom where he scheduled a call. You get a link to the actual video chat itself and you click on that so users can get to this either through the iphone app or via any web browser so it's not exactly a facetime app for android or for windows but at least if you're on a web browser on android phone you can still get. Their facetime is also going to introduce a grid view to see everyone on a call and the ability to take calls in portrait mode. So you can hold your phone horizontally and it'll actually blur out the background automatically so that you stand out facetime also add spatial audio and voice isolation so call sam more natural and allow you to cut back on the background noise. The app is also going to add. Share play which is probably one of those interesting features they revealed and it. Lets you enjoy entertainment. Such as music tv shows. While you're on a video call few might start video call minimize the window and then go to another app like say apple tv plus or some third party apps disney plus and you start playing a Tv show or a movie and it automatically start playing on the other person's call and then you can start watching together.

"Two weeks ago. . Some of you listen to US talking about how to truly get the. . From, , your leaders when it comes to your diversity equity inclusion efforts, , and there are four main steps that we talk about when it comes to building longlasting strategy is the first one is really mobilizing your leaders. . Then we start moving into building those strategies together with your leaders and then activating the right habits. . Because when we talk about the culture, , it's really shared every day habits. . So how do we properly activate those habits and then the last important step is really reimagining your systems when it comes to talent management systems and business systems in your organization. . So today will focus on how to actually build proper diversity equity inclusion strategies that last in your organization and I'm so excited that Holly's joining us. . I know that T. mobile is very highly recognized as an organization that really invested a lot in building out diversity equity inclusion culture and they've done so much in this space they've built such phenomenal brands and they're recognized by the community. . They've won a lot of awards when it comes to their work incorporate equality corporates inclusion, , and really investing in lgbtq I communities in the beds and women in the workplace. . So I would just love to get started holly and talk a little bit of your journey as far. . <unk> team. All . Ball. . Absolutely thank you esther and for having me I just so appreciate the work of an ally and it's a pleasure to partner with you in this. . So I started in the nonprofit field and I read the pedagogy of the oppressed by Paulo Freire and this truly. . My understanding of advocacy and allied ship. . And I learned early on in this work in a nonprofit working with. . Women students were the first families to go to college. . Many of them were from Latin next Hispanic Communities, , native American Indian lack of African American communities who wanted to be teachers in I learned about listening to their stories that were so different from mine and understanding how to give them a platform and a space for them to advocate in for them to rise I. think . that is one of the biggest lessons that I had is I was really learning Paulo Fair and understanding. . You how to be an advocate in it's shaped my journey throughout my career in navigating equity and inclusion I. . Love that and also especially with current times and current climate, , we see a lot of needs when it comes to the social justice movement a lot of needs from chief diversity officers and heads of those efforts in really integrating a lot of community work and integrating that social justice part into our organization. . Curious. . What comes up for you here when it comes to current times? ? You know this is such an interesting time in so many levels in IC-. . Right now, , companies are either doubling down or starting diversity equity inclusion efforts for the first time and I'm the great by that and I empathize with that and as I described the t mobile Germany I, , want to be clear that when you hear large organizations talk about their work, , sometimes you haven't in your mind or at least I used to it. . They're given at this fifty million dollar budget, , build your team, , build your strategy in a year from now we're GONNA launch you have a year, , figure it out, , and that's not reality that's not what happens in. . So I Of Walk through the journey that we had in real tangible ways in describe what we've done. . I will say that I think that there's a real balance that we have. . You know corporations we have a responsibility and the privilege to be able to invest in our communities and our employees. . But at the same time, , we also have responsibilities as citizens to the active in our communities. . In so I think that there is a real balance there of being good corporate citizens in our community as well as enforcing in really building those inclusive behaviors and practices within organizations

Variety making big splashy thick, the carriers, the other carriers t mobile not are gonNA. Get in with apple in terms of these radical protection, because it just seems like it's something that would make sense to do right. Yeah, there's a lot of pressure all across the industry both from the government the it's been very very strong in terms of how it wants carriers and manufacturers to fight robocalls. There's a protocol called. Stir shaking. T. Mobile's basing its new technology on that. Jeff is calls in a bunch of the doctor this to make sure that. To really try to help stop the BOBA onslaught that we're all facing. I fully expect that at and T. and T. mobile will be involved with us at some point as well as you know integrating this with Google android. It's something that everybody seems to be wanting to do your curious to see what the underlying technology here because if it is start shaking, that is, it's an industry standard right? Every every carrier has adopted in fact they they are mandated to adopt to stir shaken. Think by the middle of next year so there there's a deadline they're so. I'm curious if There's anything unique to a variety a nap or doing, or if this is something that t mobile not can jump on as well be an interesting thing to to find out and I'm sure we'll learn more as we get closer to becoming generally available later this year. But again it's right now. The trials with verizon, but fully expected this to be open to everybody. It's not like apple to limit it to just a particular carrier when it comes to a feature. Not and verizon also reported earnings this week. What did we learn? A busy court at and t. a particularly busy one. They had quite a lot going on in addition to the. Announcement of its five G.,.

"So, now you have two people. You GotTa do not Mowlam, because I switched varieties in a long time ago, and I want to switch back to at and T. for my main line. thought about doing that, but then my wife who does in travel with her phone, and I like verizon. I'm like why like what? What for what explained to me? The benefits my friends. But you know she talked. To one sided argument here. All right. Go, Steve. Steve's GONNA have three providers variety. He's GonNa have at and T. and T. Mobile and one provider, and you know what you should, because if you've ever been like anywhere where your phone doesn't freaking work like for example, right here in a box. Or at my house, he phones don't work like my I when sprint when I had sprint, I used to see my house was sprint proof. Here's you walk in the door drop. Call does thing and it was just like. Let me do this. Black hole reception. I WANNA. Give the listeners out there. tips for winning a debate with their with. Tip Number One. Make sure she's not present. In the arguments and tip, here's one more final up ten tips. We don't have time for all the tips right. If time for just a few of the tips, let me just kind of skip to another one of the highlight tips here. My best hip is tip number eight always keep bags of your own poop collected. Just. Tell You I. Do have a question. There like because I've asked all the big providers this before. Like I want my phone to work like always. And I'll pay more. So, don't they have like a super premium plan where you throttled Jason and clay and Dr, breath, but you don't tell me and I get priority. 'cause I know those at eighteen thousand verizon habit I. Guarantee You. Their phone works every sing anywhere all. Yes, yeah, so, is there a super like awesome plan where you can pay triple? Whatever else pays, but you like? Never, call and tastic Flynn. I'm don't even worry about dropping a call I'm just saying like I don't like. I'm a super heavy user on the phone. You WanNa be spelunker deep inside a cave. Take a call from the president. That's one. because. He calls me when I'm in caves. So the answer, the short answer to that is no. No, there's not now we'll tell you people. But I will tell you you're probably absolutely correct about the at and T. Rises X. having a plan. I myself can have a plan on my service that I could just use all the data that I from at any speed that I want and not have to worry about bill comes across. But. That's not something I would offer to a consumer. I'm not a consumer Jeff. I'm your lender. Well I'll tell you what the talk. I'll tell you if you're out there today, and you're considering boom dot us. That's www dot boom dot us one hundred percent. Don't endorse it and I also don't. Use It. I'm on the fence. "That year so we spent a lot of time. eating Rama noodles. We spent a Lotta time macaroni and cheese and we are I guess our gift to each other was finally paid on a credit card payment enough of the minimum payments that we had enough to actually go out and get a meal that we can split, so you guys earned eleven thousand dollars the entire first year. Correct and I want everybody out there listening who can relate to the story to know this is how it always starts, so let's just make sure we're getting some context here. We all know the story of Fedex but a lot of people don't know that Fedex did not did not make a profit for over a decade. We all know the name, ESPN but very few people know. THAT ESPN did not make a profit for over ten years. We all know Amazon, but very few people know that Amazon did not post a profit for ten years. We all know of Tesla. We all maybe don't know. They did not make a profit for over ten years. Somebody should write that down. Because we were competing with the ghosts of magazine covers. That aren't real. Everybody out there who owns the business is trying to build a profitable company a matter of weeks or days or months, when in fact, that's not possible brick. How long did it take you to achieve a level of financial? Success that you thought was at least respectable and or decent for having been a chiropractor who went to school for seven years to do what you do. How long did it take you before you thought okay? I'm finally earning a decent amount of money. Pretty much a solid twelve years twelve years, yeah! Yeah, it could have been shorter bit. I was I was a slow to learn so slow to implement things that I had learned even so, Jeff. How long did it take you to build boom to a level where you thought okay this this company's actually going to last is actually going to be here for the foreseeable future. So ours are turned around pretty quick are in our second year. We started doing fairly well. it's amazing and yeah, until we ended up with a a roadblock and a hiccup that happened any kind of reset everything for us our third year in and in from that it took us another year to recover. What kind of a roadblock did you run into? So when we first launched the business, we launched it as agents in other words. If you think of an insurance agent has multiple providers, they can go out and sell to a consumer, and they're going to get paid a commission off of that. That's the way we started the business originally The company that we built their business for we we, we had got to the point where we were about two hundred and fifty thousand dollars a month in commission revenue from one particular company. they just cut us off completely. Why one day notice? No, no notice. told us to go ahead and take them to court They're gonNA use our money to. Battle US and good luck, and so through attorney advice, being young being dumb We just let them ride with it. We were told you know we went after them. They're just going to file for bankruptcy. We throwing good money after bad money and didn't chase it so you've you've had your share of battles for sure so now you're. You've been in business for twenty plus years four years as BOOT mobile. How do you make any money? And now the rude questions start. How do you make? Make money if if Brek decides to switch to you, how do you make money? Okay, so there's a couple of different reasons. This is a common question. We get often so the main reason why we and how we make money and how we can do it for a consumer is the consumer is just one person, and so when you're going to at and T., you're going as one person when I go to at and T, I go carrying forty, thousand, sixty, thousand eighty thousand people. And, so they're gonNA, give me a better price and they're going to give you as an individual. Number One answer number to answer that is the fact that they have a stock market price, and they have to adhere to what drives their stock. They can't drive down. They have budgets. They have their every every every large companies to fat within themselves, and so they have to do something to drive that stock price. Paul Hood, the CPA has bona fide you in? His told me you're not crazy. But. Could endorse mill. There's people out there that have got to be thinking. It's crazy. Jason Visa's GonNa. Come on here and just assault you with rough questions, okay and Beasley. Who Are you? Who's your phone carrier? Who Do you have? Team Oh. We got people I got T. mobile yet t mobile what you spend per month on your phone Bill Jason. Just See here. One sixty. Okay, so one sixty, so let's go with here Steve. You're sitting down right now with Jeff. This is a one on one. It's a sales pitch. Okay, he's corner okay, and for whatever reason he's. He's meeting with you seriously, and he's meeting with you and your with at and T. and T. T. Mobile, right, verizon t mobile verizon to let's say I wanted to move my t mobile line over to you. I've got an IPHONE. Ten can do that. Absolutely. Do I need the the mini Sam or a small Sam or the large semi noticed on your website. You pick which Sam you want, right. And so you would have the Nanno Sim the Nanos him. Yeah, okay. That's what it'd be called, so if I switched that over, I noticed on your on your plans. Because I I actually do use this as a secondary phone so. You could probably do I mean he had like a bunch of different plans? We do so we. We try to make it very easy for the consumer to pick something that fits their needs the most. Take so the misconception for all consumers. None of you actually know what us. Right. y'All think that you know what you use. Well, we I'll say this on behalf of team. We'll call it team. beat us. I have no idea what us. All, go all go there. Also I I give you one mega point. So, if I guess what I, worry about and I'm trying to understand this is steve or to switch over from T. Mobile? Let's just say he's paying one hundred fifty a month per line for T. Mobile Kenny. Actually save money.

"To know about I'll tell you more about that of course in our T. mobile unlimited list your line is now open and that's one triple eight eight to five fifty to fifty forced way to join us in just a quick reminder is that you can always schedule a time to speak with me here on the show easy to do head over to the website hit the buttons as be a caller fill out the form and mighty Mandy is gonna be calling you back and send you out all right so we've been hearing a lot about uber drivers English drivers and other gig economy workers that you know have really had the rug pulled out from underneath them as it has for many of us and on the line we have Chad who is a gig contest hi there Chad Hey how you doing so you are now working for Instacart yeah I've been working prescribe for about a year but I'm working towards a car pretty much exclusively these days and so just so everybody's familiar Instacart you well we'll go do all your food shopping and then and then delivered to your house right yep mostly grocery stores you can also order from petco and some liquor stores still well there you go we have liquors product I heard liquor sales are like off the roof right now I know means greasy so I don't really know sister are you haven't how are you staying safe I'm I'm washing my hands all the time like before and after every shop that I do a lot of stores they have employees out front that when they bring the cards back in they they spray on and wipe them down they have tape on the floor like at the checkout registers that shows you you know every six feet to you know that this space customers from each other and a lot of customers I notice are wearing masks and gloves I'm not but you know a lot of people are how come you're not when I read it doesn't really do that much it's more about like master more about if you're sick it helps from keeping other people from getting sick and your goal of this is like every time like if if they're infected with something and you touch something then it goes from the glove to whatever you touched and vice versa okay actually in the car and door dasher bowls sending hand sanitizer and disposable gloves out to their contractors to request it so how much are you making well I will say that I made more and in the last like two weeks and I have been a long time is that right yeah I was a virgin almost doubled my hourly rate because people are taking too much advantage of the services and equipping really nice now too thank you I'm not I was that was one of the questions going to ask you are they are people tipping more now it certainly seems like it and Instacart customers they can change their tip for up to three days after delivery and I've noticed that lately ballers and I'm seeing L. five ten dollar extra tips from two three days ago thank you Sir we have been doing that well you know what because you're really providing a valuable service I mean especially to the elderly who should not be going to the grocery store right I mean there should be a a lot of people say that you know before the the just say No drive safe and like now they're like oh thank you for your service Sir they'll be safe out there and all that stuff so are people still buying a lot of toilet paper if you can find it Hey I haven't seen toilet paper in about a month and the stores but like their cashiers and store managers I talk to the baby wants all the paper we have to be outside the door when they open what do you see what you see is different in orders now than say three months ago well everybody had toilet paper and paper towels and bleach on their list and unfortunately after refund most people on that stuff thanks for shopping but yeah and everybody trying to buy like those Lysol or Clorox wipes can hi to yeah they are it's like I said it's like you want that the don't order I hate to say this but dollar through Instacart because the store went outside before they open and you can get it that way if you order through Instacart or Shipt or any other you know dig up on like that they're not making exceptions are not putting stuff aside for those types of orders so yeah you want to live a better paper tell stuff like that because the store when they open so our people buy more canned goods now yeah a little you can remind me of you know I'm in Florida and yeah we have hurricane season and when it when they think of hurricanes come and everybody starts hoarding up on canned goods pasta and rice and they're doing that now people are people are buying like as if they're expecting the power to go out and I don't have the power to go out but yeah like us candid right off the top it's gonna last a while is definitely in short supply right now you know it's interesting we go back to how much you're making so did walk me through what me through the economics of of somebody places an order how does how does this work I mean do you get paid like you said you get the tips two or three days later right but but how how does that work okay well with Instacart the base pay is seven dollars from them and then it can go up if the customer orders heavy stuff like cases of bottled water especially you get a heavy pay Bob and they also pay sixty cents per mile but they don't really they never revealed like how their pay algorithm works exactly like as far as you know how much the weight equals the actual pay on top at seven dollars and it like in something of a person is a very big order you know like two carts worth worth of food obviously you make more than the seven dollars but didn't they don't reveal on how their pay out of that works plus but if you get the customer step on top of that and but like when you place an order to rent a car at the customer it usually defaults to a five percent tip of like whatever your subtotal is done but then you pay people can like you said people are bumping up especially now you were probably more needed whenever he can't keep safe okay make sure that.

"You do have to go into either the T mobile app or onto the T mobile website to turn on the feature to enable it, but you can certainly turn it on. And so what happens when I get a lot of these calls now is. Is it'll say the number and then it'll say spam or spam likely. I think is the the phrase that they use so mayor maybe a different phrase or sometimes it just simply says call blocked and just let it go to voicemail, and it works very well. So you may actually already have a service and something built into your phone or really your cell phone service that you can use. And so you may not need to pay for one of these third party apps. You could also in addition us some of the features that are built into your phone to kind of help better manage this. Of course, you can block the spam numbers. This could be a little bit futile because they tend to not use the same numbers. Right. That's the whole point of the list is they're constantly changing these numbers. But it is something you could do I do this quite frequently. If I get a spam number go into the phone application, go into the recent tab, find that number. Over and tap, the little I I con next to it. And then swipe up and down at the bottom. You can choose block this caller, and that will add it to your iphones internal block phone number list. And then at least if you get another call from that number. It is going to be blocked. Right. So you can manage that. There's also what a lot of people refer to as the nuclear option, you can leverage the power of the do not disturb feature on your phone to basically create a phone number white list and only allow people from that white-list to actually be able to call you everything else will simply get sent to voicemail. And so this is a good way to handle it. If you don't mind doing it, and you don't mind having to make sure that the contacts, the people in your contacts are always up to date with their latest numbers and stuff like. That the way you do this as you basically go into do not disturb so going to settings do not disturb on your phone and then under the phone section. You wanna set the allow calls from option to all contacts? And then again, just make sure that anyone you want to receive phone calls from is in your contacts with the correct phone number, and that way only those calls will get through now as you're likely thinking if you've ever used do not disturb there are some potential downsides to the nuclear option. First year going to end up silencing all notifications. When you're in do not disturb mode. They're still going to appear in notification center, they'll still show up on your lock screen, but you aren't going to get the audible alerts or buzzes or anything like that for any of your notifications in there is no way to separate general notifications from the phone call stuff. So you're going to be. Operating your phone in do not disturb mode all the time, and that may or may not be something that you want to do the other potential issue is that if even if a person is in your contacts, if they have blocked the caller ID feature for any reason, they might end up going straight to your voicemail in they might not be able to get their calls through to your phone now, not a huge issue because you're gonna find them in the voicemail, and you'll be able to just call them back. But if it was something critical or important that might be a problem. You know, overall, I would say with zoo, I have personally found my carriers service. The thing that I get with T mobile to be sufficient enough to to stop or block most of these phone calls again mine is included with my cell phone plan years may or may not be. So maybe you do wanna turn to one of these third party apps on I'm sure there are likely some free ones out there. I wasn't able to find. Any single one that I felt comfortable recommending to any of you. But if you are using one of these apps, especially if it's a free app, and you're finding that it works. Very very well..

"Seven gigs of data and unlimited talk and text which is standard on everything now and sprint we had unlimited everything but the service site so i'm looking forward to seeing what the pricing is once they come out once once they have a full merger going on they're going to retain the t mobile title and sprint will be no more the ceo of t mobile will be the ceo of the new t mobile's sprint owned company and essentially wanting to get bigger so that they can play play ball in hardball verizon and eighteen t because they're going to get messy basic it's going to get super messy and they're wanting to essentially combat with the big boys now at this point so the only one that can take over that table by merging two medium size to create a juggernaut and they're by no means as big as eighteen year variety but they can put a nice dent in them now and i'll be looking forward to seeing what they do there wish it the phones were more affordable because i'm currently in the market i really don't want a piece of garbage phone but at the same time i can't afford eight hundred dollar apiece phone so i now i listened to radio station out of philadelphia quite a bit w m anamar and doesn't sprint have deal right now you can get to iphone eight for like zero dollars as long as you're credits.

"That is two point five gigahertz which again four or five years ago people thought that so high frequency it's it's hard to think of how to use it and now that we're talking about frequency bands that are ten times higher than that it doesn't sound so high anymore and now people are saying wait there is real value in that and and that's likely to become the foundation of of what a combined sprint t mobile would leverage to make something different what type of pricing power to these companies have because wireless at least at this stage not technically treated as a utility bought as in any case where sort of everybody has it even in a world is just three companies you'd imagine that these companies only have so much run rate to say halo we we're all going to jack up your cost ten 2030 brazil gets a great question i mean at the at the at the heart of your question is really are these services differential anymore you know if i went back to before 2011 not coincidently before the time that that at t and t mobile tried to merge there were really three dimensions of competition in the wireless industry wireless operators competed on the quality of their network they competed on the on the their handsets election and they competed on price headsets election is an interesting one right it wasn't that long ago that the iphone was exclusive to at t that ver rise and had put all its eggs in the basket of the motorola droid series.

"T mobile is going in the opposite direction t mobile has gone from strength to strength tmobile in 2011 was a there was an attempted acquisition by at t that failed they walked away with cash and a bunch of spectrum and and it's been lights out ever said that we had a breakup fee for that deal fail huge breakup fee and a bunch of spectrum as part of the break and fee and by the way that you'll failing a sort of what kicked off the talks of sprewell an and that's right and we'll talk about that deal failing because at deal of failing has some important implications for sprint t mobile but the bottom line is tmobile ever since 2011 has been getting stronger and stronger and stronger now there's there may be some hints around the edges that that the run that t mobile is on is starting to wind down and that could be one reason why their corporate parent torch telecom is getting more interested in in getting the deal done now but bottom line is they are strong and sprint is weak and you see that in what's been talked about an exchange ratios so the big big question around the steel even if it is in fact announced in a few weeks is the regulatory question and that's where we get into the discussion with at t and t mobile that deal was effectively blocked by us regulators that said at the time we are taking this industry from four major players to three and therefore we feel like that does not pass the antitrust romeo concerns that we have there would be too much consolidation in his industry we're not allowing the steel regulator said the same thing too softbank and t mobile back in 2013 2014 don't even bother trying you're still going four to three the logic remains the same what has potentially happened in the last five years four years three years that the thinking on that is no longer the case donald trump was elected president.

"And it's been soft banks vision to merge sprinting t mobile from the very beginning and and even t mobile has said for their part that ultimately having more scale an and being scaled similarly to verizon and at and t has to be the real and game 4 for their competitive position so you said five years it has literally been five years that not only people have been speculating about this merger but people have been fully expecting this merger i'm the company's thought about it talked about it and came reasonably close end of 2013 early 2014 and at the time we said look it's not going to happen now but it's inevitable that they will try in the next administration whether it's a republican administration or a democrat administration that it was inevitable evola going to try so there's i guess the main headline here is there is no surprise whatsoever in the idea that these companies are seriously talking about merging give us a sense of the states of these two businesses so you know seemingly everybody has a wireless plan these days but there's so much capital expenditure that goes into wireless companies how are these two companies doing well let's let's start at the industry level the industry is not terribly healthy right i mean this is an industry that people four years thought of as a gogo growth industry and i should say that the industry really is agency horizon sprinting t mobile yeah that's basically those four players and and it's not a terribly healthy industry um because it's not a growth industry anymore you know the years of wireless as a real growth engine of the economy um at least from the carrier's perspective are over wireless and this is true in europe by the way as well most of the developed world wireless is already ubiquitous and.
