"It help ease the decision. Yes. Newton says he does not plan to retire from football, believes the rookie Mac Jones will have success as Patriots signal caller on the heels of his four year $112 Million extension with the Steelers. T. J. Watt is now the league's highest paid defender, guaranteed 80 million over the next three seasons. He had this son the negotiations. It was a long process and, um Like I said, I have two brothers who have kind of gone through it. Derek once for the Steelers and J. J two, and, um, they weren't much help when it came to remembering what it was like. And I kind of understand now I remember asking JJ early on. I said, Well, how did your negotiations go? And he goes Once you sign on that dotted line, man, you don't you kind of forget what happened leading up to that moment, and that's kind of how this whole thing has been for me to, um, so it was some long days for sure. But like I said, it's It's all paid off. And now I'm just focused on playing football. "Your got your quarterback? Did you pay big money to With our pos and things like things of that nature, So we know how Tampa Bay started the season. How does it end? Greenie has a thought. I have the Tampa Bay Buccaneers winning the Super Bowl and back to back seasons and this time beating the Cleveland Browns. Yes, I'm in. I'm going all in on the Cleveland Browns. Baker. Mayfield goes from good to great, and that defense is so much better bucks over Brown's in the Super Bowl, and he also had the Bucks blowing out the Cowboys in this season opener is awfully tight game Cowboys will always be the focus of conversation, but their recent results have not befit America's team. Dallas has made the playoffs seven times since 2000 from 1990 to 99. They made it eight times. They haven't made the NFC Championship game in the last 25 Seasons. Pts Michael WILBON. A good season for me involving the Cowboys would be if Producers at every network that discusses sports toned down the hype and the slur Pidge of the Cowboys. Tony they've only made the playoffs seven times this century. Alright, and you get records six and 10. There's a you Know, eight and eight, There's a 10 and six followed by nine and 7 13 and three followed by four and 12. I'm going backward now 12 and four, followed by eight and 88 and 88 and 86 and 10. The Cowboys aren't good enough to inspire all of the jaw flapping that they that they get Tony. The obsessive coverage of the Cowboys is a media issue. It's America's team because producers on every network starting with this one insist on just assigning so much coverage to the Cowboys, they don't justify it with performance. So I don't I guess making the playoffs would be a good season for them. I guess I really don't care what they do. You know, if Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith and the playmaker Michael Irvin, if they were walking through that door behind the line they played behind then we can talk about the Cowboys. But they're not. They're not. They're a They're not even mediocre relative to the rest of the NFL, the others so many teams above them over the last 20 years. So what? We're going to be inundated. We're gonna put those ring coats on and wait for that storm of cowboy hype to come at us. The Steelers, meantime, have made outside linebacker T. J. What the highest paid defensive player in the league. It's a four year extension worth 112 million. He's become one of the best pass rushers in the league evidence by his 49 a half sacks over his first four pro seasons. Adam Schefter had the story and has the defeats of the deal. T. J. Watt is one of the best players not just in the defensive.

"Six list. Top six NFL teams for 2021. The Brown is going to make the list. Are we going to hear more barking from the dog, Pat? Here. King. Lot of quarterbacks Indiana. Mhm. Have no problem with voicing their opinions today, Ben Roethlisberger stood in front of the media, and he basically told everyone TJ want Deserves to be paid. The Steelers need to pay him whatever he wants. They need to do it now, and it's just like Whoa. Ben Roethlisberger, he said. Look Restructured my contract for this simple reason to get T J Watt onto the field so he can go out there in the regular season and just wreck quarterbacks. And we've started they hear more and more over the years from quarterbacks who you know, are not ashamed to tell the world and tell their teams exactly what they want. Whether it's Russell Wilson with protection. Whether it's adjustment in the entire front office culture like Aaron Rodgers pretty much told the Green Bay Packers for the entire season. We're hearing more and more demands from quarterbacks. And why not? It's a dog eat dog world. The Q B S are just about the only players who can do so. And as I told you prior to the break, Realistically, you think about the hundreds upon hundreds of players in the NFL. Man. It's probably only 10 guys who can even open up their mouths in such a way. So the phone lines are open before we get to the top six at the top of the hour, 855 to 1 to four, CBS. What are your thoughts? How do you feel when we have these quarterbacks just just saying whatever comes to their mind, just telling the truth. It's a new day. It's a new era. And if you got the stroke and use it, right. Brian is calling from Wisconsin. Brian you on CBS Sports Radio. Hey, Jr. Thanks for having me first time caller Love the show. Thank you. Go ahead. Uh, yeah, In my opinion, these guys on the face of the teams there's the guys that get the blame for the wins and the losses. They should have the right to be able to eat what they want. As far as the management goes as far as what they think their players that they play with day in and day out what their work Okay. You don't think it gets tricky when Ben Rapolas Burger is basically playing public agent for T J Watt? I mean, isn't you don't think that that kind of puts him in the organization and an odd standing I think again that With him in a leadership position that the rest of the team knows that he's going to back them up if they ever get into a tight spot like that. Touche. There's no doubt about that. Thank you. Brian for calling from Wisconsin. How many times you're going to hear that, though? You know, we heard from Ben Roethlisberger here on T. J. Watt. You think we're going to hear about him on on another player? Like When do you hear this? Players are typically very happy to mind their business and shut up when it comes to somebody else's contract. They do not want to be involved. You don't want to be a player who, when the media asks you about Hey, what do you think about you know your teammate X Y z's contract. Typically, the players know enough to shut the hell up. It's one of my business. I don't want to influence the decision that's between the team and X Y Z player and the player at the same time, he doesn't want to face any repercussions. He doesn't want to have a negative effect on that man's contract negotiations and a lot of times you don't even the agents don't want anybody chiming in on negotiations, so Typically, it's a space to shut up when it comes to somebody else's money. And so yeah, I'm pretty sure T j want appreciates it. He's in a unique position. T. J Watt is a superstar. In the NFL. Regardless of how you feel about Ben Roethlisberger and how much he has left in the tank, Ben Roethlisberger via accomplishment and name alone. He is a superstar in the NFL. And so, yeah, he's going back him. But let's not pretend like Ben Roethlisberger is gonna back. You know the 53rd guy on the roster? Ben Roethlisberger might not even remember his name And sometimes you like anything in life. You got to pick and choose your battles. Sometimes you gotta know when to go. Sometimes you gotta know when to fall back. John is calling from Houston John you on CBS Sports radio. Hey, Jay. How you doing, man? Very well. Amen. Is that Jenny? Man? The local shows the out. Call me and you know, I thought about this for a while. It's just very expensive. It wells really wrong. I got I don't the stuff there and were on the rise in Bergen. Where is talking back? I can. He said that he didn't bit more. That's where you whack because they didn't on the team here and the one chances What's there to get left back here? What may even unpacked his bags the he got a big contest. Less than a month later, he starts bringing about being they actually remember part of back friends have brought back to the death. Are present. That would be have been a net. Get a big contract in less than a month. How about being traded? And then he ain't say the word bad thing we've heard from his AZ Talking about, uh, he wanted to be played for this reason and that reason and those reasons don't hold water energy. There's not a play in the NFL in the past or the present. That if you act in the they love everybody on their team only and the organization did they get along with everybody There tell, you know, so he's you know, reasons all hold water are asleep my personal after that, not never Want to pray here and you and I tell you what, And if he was okay, the reasons he gave where he'd been here for a while now, anytime, Washington the cooler one. Well, John, John, just say this one. No, no, no, no, no. Wait a minute, John. Hold on. Well, you heard me, right? Yeah, man. Okay. I don't know where your phone is. "Wants. He's arguably the best football football football player in the game right now, not just on defense just in general. You know, I've been through negotiations here with contracts. You know, One of the reasons I took less money was for guys like him to get paid, and he needs to get paid. Um he deserves every penny that he wants and asked for, And so, um, yeah. T. J. Juarez is that guy that should get whatever he wants. Hold up, man. I don't understand it, Mike. Why does Rothenberger need to insert himself in this conversation about T J y like you took less money so that you can have money to pay? T. J. What No, no, no, no, no, That's not how everything went down with Ben Roethlisberger this offseason. He took less money because he had no damn choice. He wasn't going to be the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers unless he did so, but I will say this as a former player. Having your quarterback come out and have your back when it comes to a contract negotiations or contract stalemate with the organization. I mean, you gotta You gotta love that Ben Roethlisberger is doing that for T J. What? Yeah, I think you're right, like short of him, saying Guys like me and Tom Brady take less so that the team can sign more people. It's harder to go out here and make sure that your inserted quite as much as Ben Roethlisberger just did. But that was my first thought. What you just said. That means something like I remember back way back when I was 2015 when Jimmy Graham was going through arbitration with the New York Saints, with the NFL, talking about the terms of his franchise tag, he wanted to be tagged as a wide receiver. They obviously wanted to tag him in a much newer number as a tight end, and Drew Brees came out and said he's one of the best tight ends in the league, said that very publicly in a way that a lot of people looked at and said, You're you're not really helping the cause for a guy that's very important to you in that way. And maybe Drew didn't mean it as Pointedly as he did, But there is something to be said for Ben being crystal clear, saying, I understand better than anybody. How the Steelers how the Rooney family does business around here, and we've got to throw that by the wayside like you've got to update the software at some point. This seems like a good spot and the perfect player to do it on if your Pittsburgh well, Yeah, I mean, T J Y checks every single box. I mean, in terms of being productive. That's a check in terms of him being available, healthy to be able to play every single game. He's got that on his resume as well, So I mean, he's a high character guy he's got. He's got the kind of pedigree actually looking for. I don't understand the downside to paying a guy like T J Watt. I mean, if you if you're an organization that's gotta parks a significant amount of guaranteed dollars a significant amount of your salary cap someplace. T. J. Watt is a good place to do it because you know that guy is going to be a part of your team's long term future and you're going to get the return on investment that you're looking for. So I mean, I don't understand why it's It's taken the Steelers this long to be able to get this done. Why they've taken it up to the 11th hour. Once the player makes it clear throughout the off season, they are committed to holding out or withholding services until they get a deal done. That should be the tip to Kevin Colbert that something's got to happen, so they make sure that they have this guy Week one, and I think that they've moved in that direction. So good on the Pittsburgh Steelers. I'll be interested to see what the structure of the contract is. Because you know, the Steelers don't like to give guaranteed money beyond the second year of a contract extension. I'll be interested to see what that looks like. But it sounds like the Steelers are moving closer to being able to get this deal done again. With T. J Watt being back on the field of full participant in practice, you write all signs point towards this getting resolved before we got to get on the field and really see what life might be like without him. Straight talk wireless, no contract, no compromise. Coming up. Next, though we'll talk to a Hall of Famer on the outlook for the 2021 season. What it's like playing well into your thirties and beyond. And if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have what it takes to repeat, we will do that after this word from indeed. Now running your own business. It requires a lot of running around from bookkeeping. The client meetings. You run it all..

"Good with it. What's what should I worry about? DJ? What? What? What do you think? The funniest thing about this T J watched I loved yesterday hearing all the stories how the Steelers have a policy. The policy is we don't negotiate in season with players and also There's an except to the policy. Did you see that? No, The policy is they don't negotiate in season with players. Dot dot dot Unless they actually began negotiations with the player before the season began. Then it's okay to actually negotiate during the season, right? I just thought that I learned that one yesterday. Yeah, Yeah, The funniest that. Hey, we have a policy. Good. Okay, You can change your policy anytime you want. It's your policy, right? You know, we have a policy. If you don't practice you don't play. Yep. And then one day somebody doesn't practice. You're like, Well, you know, you could probably play. It's your policy. The Steelers, of course, could get T. J Watt back on the field if they want to. Signed to the deal. Continue negotiations. Whatever I feel like you would play. Yeah, based on what I listen to a little bit of Earth watch some of my Tom's press conference yesterday. And you know, based on what he was saying it again. You always take what coaches are telling you when it comes to injuries or playing time or this or that, Um, I mean, he was asked a question about I think their depth chart and who the nickel cornerback was and somebody made an observation about no one's listed at this spot. And Tomlin's like, Yeah, I did that on purpose. I'd like to have a little subterfuge. You know, Basically, I don't want to. I don't want the opponent to know what we're doing at certain spots. The Tomlin. So Tom and he said he thinks he's going to play here is the the best part of this look, we've already because of last year we learned that you could actually not have preseason games. And be okay to play a regular season game in week one and beyond and be completely fine. And over the course of the last few years, the Bills did this. Of course, this summer, more coaches are getting too. It's not just maybe sit your 35 year old quarterback it sit a whole bunch of starters. For the whole preseason. And to me, the T. J. Watt thing is interesting. Here's a guy who has not practice in a single teen drill. He's been with the team all summer. He's been at every training camp and preseason practice. He did individual participation. And then when they went into team drills, he went off to the side and it's you know, conditioning and whatever else to keep busy. So not a single team drill until possibly today. And he'll play on Sunday. No preseason games. No team drills in the preseason. In the practice, you're going to play. Like Okay, right you just how important is the summer? You know, Sorry, maybe for younger players, But here's a guy pops right in their best player on defense. Who's going to have next? Nothing as far as the preseason really. And he'll be playing on. I think he'll play on Sunday. The question is how many snaps what kind of condition is he in? What kind of condition? What kind of cohesion is there? Because, right if you don't take any team wraps like I I guess I would figure he'll be fine. Yeah, I'm saying, you know, I think T J Watt would prove what the heck do you know? A lot of these guys don't need any of this stuff in the training camp. Maybe Maybe reps for game shape. I don't know. Like Dion Dawkins write the Bills felt it was important to get Dawkins in the second preseason game. He was coming off Covid. He missed two weeks of camp and he talked about still being fatigued. Okay. They want to get them in a little bit. Get his body condition for game football. Okay? But I mean, how much do you really need in the summer of T. J. Watt is going to do zero teamwork until days before the game and then play Sunday and you know if he does play, he's the first guy. You've got to keep an eye on for the bills. Often you've got to stop T J Watt from disrupting your your offense. Yep. And you've got to stop their offense, I guess as well. It's all the good stuff. It's all it's you know, there's no but Dupri, which is nice. You know, I'm not sure of Pittsburgh fans did a lot of who's better Dupri or what? Um, They're both great at the time. Of course, Dupri's coming back from an injury and known Tennessee What's been incredible and his stats against the bills. He doesn't have very many sex, but he is what forced fumbles. Quarterback hits pressures like he is the he's exactly the guy the bills I think defensively have been looking for. Yeah, right guy that you always have to worry about. Yeah, like a game wrecker, A guy that can completely change the game up front defensively and, you know, hopefully one of these defensive ends they picked or hopefully, as a group, they can kind of turn into a bunch that does that. But I mean what is seeking what a top five salaried his position number one salary his position in his contract extension because he's been productive enough to earn that to warrant that. That's another policy. By the way, the Steelers have When it comes to working out contract extensions. They they've always had a policy, I guess of never guaranteeing any money beyond the signing bonus. Well, that's changed in the NFL. Right? The N F. It's It's not say where the NHL is where you have fully guaranteed contracts..

We'll be joined by a hall of Famer Tony Dungy this morning at 8 30 Eastern time. The football world mourning the death of Sam Bam Cunningham. Played his entire NFL career for the Patriots. But prior to that he was an all American fullback at USC, and it was his performance in a win over a predominantly white Alabama team in 1970. That prompted Bear Bryant to integrate the sport further in the South. Sam Cunningham was 71 Steelers heading to their week one match up in Buffalo and still talking with linebacker TJ Watt. Mike Tomlin, using the word optimistic about what's possible availability this week. Team does have some long standing policies, but earlier on ESPN radio on Freddie and Fitzsimmons, I'm tired. You've got eliminate 20th century thinking and get with the Taj in the 21st century, And it's not as if the T. J. Watt has done this before. He's not trying to cause a stink, but he has. He believes he should be fairly compensated and he has a point there. If you're the Pittsburgh Steelers, why would you hold down on him and send that kind of mess in the locker room? It's not about messing with a guy's money. It's about making sure he gets what's fair before the market value goes up. And then you won't even try to afford him. If you are the Pittsburgh Steelers Steelers on the road against the bills this week, Bucks and Cowboys, of course, opening the season tomorrow in Tampa, Freddie Coleman, noting that T J Watt Isn't trying to make a stink. Where'd you meet Alicia? I met her on that app. Plenty of fish. All right. Oh, okay. I mean, we say it like that. Why did you choose plenty of fish? T. J Can you tell us that is a good question? Yeah, I feel like tinder and some of those other apps are more like hook up apps, and I'm at a place where I'm looking to meet somebody to have a relationship with. It's interesting what I think of plenty of things I didn't know Fish had enough money to make an app that some Amazing well when there's plenty of them, but all their guests, so they just Yeah, We're just saying that because plenty of visions kind of known in the dating world. It's like the very bottom end of the app. If that makes sense. That's actually not what I've heard. And I kind of feel that tinder is kind of the bottom of the barrel. So you like it. That's all that man. Yeah, and you got I mean, you got a hot date. It sounds like out of it, right T. J. Yeah, it was actually very interesting. She had a link in her bio to this YouTube video. And it was like her dancing at a wedding and she had so much energy and it was horrible. It was horrible dancing, but Oh, my God. I love you for that. That is cool. Yeah, we all know somebody. That's just a terrible dancer. But you know what? It's cool that they just own it. Yeah. I mean, the people who like really go all out are the ones that you love the most. Yeah, that's really endearing. Yeah. I mean, Alexis is in the room she knows understands terror. Will dancer Alexis. And if I'm being honest, I'm also a horrible dancer, but I do it with enthusiasm. There you go. That's cute. You're having fun. So did you use that as an opening line with her or something? I actually did. And it was great because it wasn't that typical like hey, what's going on? It was like I'm also a bad dancer. That's what I said. If all right. Okay. Obviously that worked out for you. So what do you guys do for your date? So I took her out to this nice restaurant and dressed up was really excited getting a good meal and it was a great time. But I'll be honest. I don't I don't go to a lot of nice restaurants. I'm not like how dare you. You're not. Well, hang up. We only talk to people who go out to nice restaurants on a consistent basis. Like I'm I'm normally good with, like chipotle or McDonald's, right. Yeah, but I wanted to do something nice and we go to this restaurant and a little something happened at the beginning that Think maybe threw her off. It threw me off. I'm not used to places that bring you wines to the table and give you gave me like a little sample of the wine to taste it to see if I would like it. I was completely unaware that you're not supposed to, uh, spit it back out. No. Oh, no. You have to have like a spittoon. If you're going to do that, Like what? What did where did you spit it Back out right back in your glass? Yeah, honey, listen, I used to be a fine dining server. When you see someone not know what to do. It is excruciating as a server, but honestly, she laughed. And my kids seem to judge me for that awesome That's care. And you shouldn't be. Judge for it. I mean, it's a silly mistake, and it's cute. "High safety, a traditional safety all the way back plays in that zone, whether it's zone in the middle of field or his own, taking one half of the field and strong place on the strong side of the ball. Generally, they'll come down in the box a little bit, too. On T. J. Ward was kind of a strong safety box safety that kind of thing, perfect example. And and the thing is, is he played a little bit of both. In fact, you know, honestly, I kind of liked him a little bit. Maura's as a roamer, a guy that has a chance to make a play in the ball because that's where he got most of his work. They had that transformation. It wasn't all on Richie. He didn't get a lot more. He got a steady dose of playtime in 2017 when they went undefeated. Prior to that, though he was there, and we didn't really get a chance to play. But like I said, once, he got a steady dose of playtime, they kind of just took off. And then he did come back from war. "Saw that with With Tom Brady against the Against the Saints. That last touchdown was to let him for not running on a sloppy about that. It was a sloppy angle route that place supposed to be, you know, four steps put their three steps, put my foot in the ground cut across the defenders face. The ball's going to hit me in the chest and I'm going to score a touchdown. He like ran up to the defender, like pushed him off of him and then bobbled it into the end zone. S Oh, yeah. If you can have a good run game and diversity, our running back. I mean, it helps you so much more and you're seeing the best teams. They have that. You know, I do. The bills are gonna have to build this out a little bit. You know, that worries me about the bills right now, By the way, That's the thing you know, because, yeah, it's misleading because because you have to pick through the stats here because Anybody who watches the Bills knows that Josh Alan, you know whether it's 567 times a week is going to tuck it and run on. He's gonna usually gain a lot of yards, but you know when you run, what do they care of the ball? Roughly 13. I don't know. Seven. I'll check. Actually, I'm going to say about 13 times up 16. They had 16 carries this past weekend, but Josh Allen had seven of them. That's right. I mean, that's so you know, Devon single, Larry had seven T. J Yeldon had the two and Josh Allen had seven. And just like one of the real rare games were Alan really didn't get much done on the ground production wise, but he still ran it seven times, but it's misleading. It's misleading. Yes, you say. Well, yes, they have elements of running. But not the elements of running that protect the quarterback. Which is what we're actually talking about in the segment. Yeah. No. You like you look at there. You look at the Baltimore I mean, the, uh, the bills and you, You look at their run offense and you're like, Yeah, they're actually Actually pretty good there like you know, one of the one of those teams. It scares you with the run game. But then you go look at that. That's what you think. When you go look at the stats. You're like, Wait. They're like middle of the road. You know, there's Mexican, actually. Bottom of the road. But what about Josh Alan? But Josh Alan does it surprisingly. There is no game planning that gives you excessive run ability and buffalo and that that really worries me this weekend. Beatty and so one is the one negative on this offense because they're top number two scoring offense number two total offense, but so much of it is predicated on one player being elite, and that's Josh Allen, whose only figured that out this year Here is certainly something to watch. And then you see Tom Brady, and it's amazing because it Brady was selfish. I mean, this guy will be calling plays pass all the time. I had my stats. He gets him out of pass and into run. As so frequently and so selflessly onto the benefit the team. It's it's. Um and that's something that listen, you know you're not going to leave the NFL in times audible incorrectly. But if there was a stat for that, or at least an acknowledgment of a staff for that Then people would really realize. And I think most people know this. But Tom Brady on another and not just Brady, but the great court of Rogers does it too. Hey, you know what? They're giving us this? Yeah. Probably had a little more fun dropping back and flinging it 20 yards downfield, But because we're here to win what, actually stick it in the belly to the guy behind me, right? Exactly. Look, let me look he threw for under 200 yards. Bt And he he had a rushing touchdown, which was obviously the sneak at the end, But I mean, he did. You don't have to be elite number wise quarterbacking toe win in the NFL. It's true you don't have to. That's true. Take. Let's get the update acts on top of that will come back. There was something else. We got back on track. We had a good conversation. Had some wine had a really good time swallowed it This time. Just exactly brought me a different glass. So it was great service. Good service. And at the end, she had made it very clear when she got there, You know, like in a nice way that you would feel more comfortable if we split the check which was totally cool with me.
