"Is Bloomberg business of sports. Everybody is into soccer. So it's not a case of like building the game in 94. To me, the Met tab, one of the most aggressive owners in all of pro sports. Women's sports has become much more high profile. There's been a lot of focus on it. TV networks have made a killing off of college football and they will continue to do that. If you have a very motivated owner which the Padres do, which the Phillies do, which the Yankees do, you spend. I think sports may be driving some of these streaming services as they go forward. There's a shelf life to be in an athlete. You have to figure out what the pivot is going to be. Bloomberg, business of sports. From Bloomberg radio. This is the Bloomberg business of sports show where we explore the big money issues in the world of sports. I'm scarlet fu. And I'm Damien SaaS hour. Michael Barr will be back next week, but we've got the pleasure of having Bloomberg sports contributor Dan Schwartzman with us. Hey Dan, great to see you. It's great to be your big shoes to fill sitting in for Michael Barr. Let me get a Barry White Barry White recording and substitute that for myself. Okay, so in time that will come. And of course, Dan will be a big part of our conversations in a bit, but right now it is early March and march is women's history month. So we wanted to kick off the month with a show that would really focus on powerful women in sports. That's right, Scarlett coming up on the show. We're going to be speaking with Carolyn Kindle. She is president and CEO of the newest expansion soccer club in the MLS, St. Louis city SC. Her team builds itself as the first majority female owned club in MLS history, and one of the few in professional sports globally. So we're going to get her thoughts as the team starts a new season, and here are some of her insight on diversity in sports leadership. We try to be very thoughtful about hires diversity and all sense of the word, however you identify what community you come from, there's a role for you to play here. But more importantly, if you are the best in that position, we're so excited to have you be part of city SB. That conversation is on the way on the Bloomberg business of sports, as we celebrate the start of women's history month. Now let's dive in with a conversation we had with another influential women in the world of sports. Earlier, we got a chance to speak with Katie griggs, Katie is president of business operations for the Seattle Mariners. Of course, the Major League Baseball season is only a few weeks away, so we wanted to get her thoughts on the upcoming season. Plus, Seattle will be hosting not only this year's All-Star Game scarlet, but the 2024 NHL winter classic which I know you're very excited. Yeah, you know I'm partial to that. She spoke with Damien me and Michael Barr, let's take a listen to that conversation. Well, there is a lot to talk about, but I'm going to start with the most obvious you guys have the MLB All-Star Game. And in 6 months or so down the road, you got the 2024 NHL winter classic. That's the first ballpark to do so. Am I correct? To my knowledge, that is correct. Now, what is it, first of all, when a park has to get ready for the All-Star Game, what's involved in them? You know, it's a tremendous opportunity. We think the T mobile park is the absolute best place to watch baseball in July already. But this is an opportunity to showcase it to a broader audience. And so everything that we're doing, each and every game for our fans, we're looking to do that for food fans. We're going to have the opportunity to either come and attend in person or watch on television. So it's really an opportunity to showcase T mobile park, but also more broadly the city of Seattle and our Pacific Northwest region. So we've been excited to partner with Major League Baseball and how this comes to life not only for fans who are going to be able to have tickets to come to the events. But also for fans all around the area. And of course, within 6 months, you'll be hosting the 2024 NHL winter classic as well. So talk a little bit about the preparations involved in getting ready for first All-Star Game, but then transitioning to something like the winter classic, which requires all sorts of infrastructure that has not been undertaken before. Yeah, no, I mean, it's a lot of fun, but it is definitely work. It's working with both leagues. So both are league events. So it's a Major League Baseball event, the all star week. And then obviously with the NHL for the winter classic. And so it's working with them to understand those events, what's important to them, and then obviously ensure that we're doing everything we can to bring the event to life here in the ballpark for those fans. But for the winner, you're right. We are an outdoor venue. One of the cool things about our space though is we do have a retractable roof, which means that even if there's inclement weather, our fans will be covered. But it is an opportunity to win a rise and really get to use the ballpark in some special ways and times when perhaps it's not as in use. So Katie, let's talk baseball here. I mean, look Seattle had an incredible year. They finished 90 and 72. They made the playoffs for the first time in 21 years. But for me, the real question I have is will Louis Louis be returning to the 7th inning stretch because I know you replaced it with macklemore and Ryan Lewis this year and there's been some contention around

"I tried to pick it up again and then I got it. You missed it episode at a time. This is episode 1917 of effectively wild which is a fangraphs baseball podcast brought to you by our Patreon supporters and I am Meg rally a fan graphs and you, you are Ben Lindbergh of the ringer, Ben. How are you? Didn't notice that you've missed a beat it off. Sounds like you have been with me the whole time and you've got that intro down cold. It's fine. Welcome back. It's fine. Thank you. Thank you. You had a good reason. I guess it was a good reason, although it turned out to be sort of a sad reason. I don't know. Maybe not, you tell me, but you were not here last time because you were at T mobile park. Yeah. Seattle. See you in a baseball game. We're really too small games. Crammed together in one. You were at the Mariners game. The Mariners lost sadly, but yeah. Yeah, I was. I was there. I even wrote about it. Yeah. What? You wrote a great and jelly and recap. I enjoyed quite a bit. People have said that and makes me feel very uncomfortable. But I'm glad that people enjoyed it. They certainly gave me a lot to work with, didn't they? Yeah, they did. Ben, I'm here to tell you that despite them losing, it was maybe the single coolest sporting thing I've ever seen in person. Oh, that's great. I just worried that I was going to ask you to relive a traumatic experience here, but I'm glad that's not the case. No, it wasn't. It was really, it was really something, you know? It was very cool to be in that ballpark and feel the energy that was present. Really for pretty much the entire game. I don't know if everybody had their Red Bulls or they had other forms of liquid courage that they're disposal. But the fans were fantastic. The pitching was thrilling. I know that there were some I saw on Twitter which definitely means that we should pay a lot of attention to it who were saying, this is the argument for the zombie runner, and I was like, no, this is, this is thrilling, though. I was actually not too interrupt, but because you brought that up, I was going to ask you about that because we had the really long scoreless Astros Mariners game and then the almost as long score was raised guardians game. Yeah. And I enjoyed those things. Like you, I think those were arguments against the zombie runner. Yes. But I kind of wonder whether MLB will view it that way, whether rob Manfred, who's already predisposed to what the zombie runner will view it that way. I guess there would come a point where a scoreless game could get tiresome. Now, obviously, because it's the playoffs because these were really important games because they were not night games, I think, crucially. That helped in both cases. Yes. Those were extremely intense and entertaining and great. And it would have spoiled it for me to play scoreless games for night innings and then say, okay, we're going to change to wacky fun ball rules now and now you can score a bunch of runs. So I love that that happened that way. It does, I guess, highlight something that's been something of a trend this postseason, which is just teams that hitting very well. Or I guess you could say teams pitching really well. What are the other hitters have looked kind of overmatched? This postseason so far, like the strikeout to walk ratio is way out of whack even the strikeout to hit ratio is extreme. There's just been a succession of aces and flamethrowing weight in relievers. As always, in October, but maybe even more so. So that may be points out that, okay, there are perhaps some offensive problems here and that's why we want to change some rules potentially. So I do wonder whether MLP will look at that and be like, well, we can't have these long, long scoreless games where we're going 1315 and 18 innings with nobody scoring. Therefore, we must impose the zombie runner, whereas you and I, I think we're looking at that and saying, this is great, not every day, but at least in the playoffs, this is good. This is much better than the alternative. Yeah, I think that you're just, you're always gonna have a hard time convincing fans that someone's season should end with a gift of a runner on second base. And I appreciate that Manfred is like, you know, he's got a B in his proverbial bonnet about this issue, but I think the relative scarcity of games like this, the fact that the ones that we got this postseason, at least, despite their length were quite thrilling and full of atmosphere and tension and I think that that probably helps. And I think that clubs and probably importantly their owners are going to say, look, I don't want my season to end because a zombie runner is crossing home plate. That just, it feels like a bridge too far in the postseason. Now, I've been wrong before. But I want to think that because there is such a primacy being placed on postseason play to perhaps to the detriment of the regular season, which is something I imagine we will talk about on this episode. You know, just how much we buy into that idea. But I think they want it to feel dramatic and at least in terms of the coverage that I saw across sort of the baseball media landscape and even at MLB dot com. I think everyone recognized that that 18 and in game were long was like a classic, you know. That's a game I think we'll talk about for a long time. I think you're right. How willing we are to be delighted by those things definitely depends on one first pitches and the fact that it was a 1 o'clock start certainly helped, but I was like, hey, I thought here at 9 45. 8. Yeah. Where people standing for most of that game. Did people sit at some point where

"Are seeing a need for alternate routes and patience this weekend. And today, well, it's just frustrating. I'm just trying to get away from west Seattle, which is always tough. But first I bridge was a little complicated, especially with the main closure. That's because of construction from revive I 5, was shot has cut down lanes. I 5 soft bone to chew between I 90 and Spokane street. This project started on Friday nights. The goal is to replace the outdated expansion joints. It's kind of crazy, but they kind of need to fix the roads in ways because all the expansion joints are crumbling. So when you write in more sales on the freeway, you actually feel it instead of a car. Another project, SR 5 20, shut down completely from I 5 alloy to 92nd in Bellevue. Crews are putting in girders for new lanes because of the closure drivers packed I 90 west bumpers of bumper. Others also taken four or 5 where there was also congestion. Wash shots as 5 20 will reopen Monday morning. Now Mariners keep in mind, still have another games also a limit field. There's gonna be the game between the OL reign and the Portland thorns. So it is recommended that possibly carpool or even take public transit. And reminder with road work on the Warren avenue bridge in Bremerton reducing traffic to one lane in each direction, there may be backups of a mile or two, that project continues on weekends for the rest of the month. The EM so San Francisco with Marco Gonzalez, starting for the EMS and Kevin Gossman for the Giants manager Scott Service says the club is looking forward to having fans back at T Mobile Park. "At T Mobile Park fans will be back into the stands and our Mariners insider Shannon Dreyer is here. Theo, tell us what we could expect the season first, You must be pretty excited to see the fans back. Oh, yeah, It's absolutely thrilled to get to see people come into the ballpark, and I really didn't know until they weren't there. Just the impact that they have and the energy that they bring to a stadium and then just, you know the idea that this is really the first kind of mass live event in Seattle. Since the end of March last year. Ah, a lot of excitement surrounding all of this. This should be the year where all the agony of the previous years is finally behind us, and the team can start to sing. Yeah, you hope so, you know, Unfortunately, under the original plan, that's absolutely would have been that year. But last year season, which was to be a developmental season, the opportunity Get the young players. We all full season in the big leagues and get their legs under them turned out to be just two months. So you know, I I don't know how much they can accelerate through this year and by the end point to be where they hope to be. It's you've got to be realistic and realized how much was lost last year. But being down in spring training for three weeks, they think the imagination does start to wander a little bit because we saw some great performances from not only the young stars they're going to start the season with the big league squad, but the ones that are kind of come come up during the year. So, Yeah, I think that at the very least, I think this team should finish very strongly. And I think people should have a good feeling about it. Seattle Mariners CEO Kevin Mather under fire for comments, releases statement

"Go badly for that team. Generally it does otherwise. That would not be talking about that team. Because they never do anything right. They never do anything good. So if I'm talking about the Mariners, and I'm talking about their president and their CEO, Kevin Mather. He probably did something really stupid. And then he and they are probably about to get wrecked for it. And if I'm talking about the president and the CEO, talking to the Bellevue Breakfast, Rotary Club It's gonna go horribly for everybody, and that's pretty much the result of him running his yap to the Rotarians earlier this month. You see, he was speaking to the breakfast Rotary Club on February 5th. Those comments became public yesterday and immediately went viral. So why is that? It's because, he said, the quiet part out loud and said so on pretty much every single topic imaginable. Like you know, the speech to the Rotary Club where nobody ever says anything noteworthy? You know what's an all timer when you've got a guy like that, having to issue a statement, which includes the following line, and I quote I've been on the phone most of the day today, apologizing to the many people I have insulted, hurt or disappointed in speaking at a recent online event. Unquote at a boy Ste. Hot champ. How the hell could anything that happens at the Rotary Club go so horribly that you have to spend a day apologizing to all the people they even salted and hurt or disappointed. I mean, how dumb would you have to be? How bad would that speech have to be to warrant an apology like that? A statement like that from the CEO of an MLB team answer. Really, really dumb. And a really horrible speech. The hell was this guy thinking anyway? Clearly he wasn't my man's mouth was simply on autopilot. Check out what he said about that stuff about the fact that he admitted there was no way that he was going to call it their top prospects last season. Not because they weren't good enough, but because the team wanted to manipulate this service time if our major league team had had a Cupid outbreak. Or, you know injuries and we had to call people up from the taxi squad. We were a little short on players because there was no chance you were going to see these young players at T Mobile part. We weren't going to put him on the 40 man roster. We weren't going to start the service time clock. There were all kinds of reasons that if we would have had injury problems or a covert outbreak You might have seen my big tummy out there in left field. You would not have seen our young players are prospects playing in T Mobile Park. Check this dude out. I'm gonna gloss over the fact that a grown ass man An adult just used the phrase my big tummy. In public. I mean, normally, that'd be one of the more offensive things in a speech like that doesn't even crack the top 10 here. Honestly, the fact that he's openly admitting to being happy to putting a lesser version of his own team on the field in order to manipulate service time isn't even the most egregious a fence from this dope. I mean, we already know that goes on. We already know that a bunch of major league teams do that. But this moron is the only one admitting it in public and going on record with it. Except he wasn't done. He had more. Like saying that Kyle Seager is quote overpaid and that this would be his last year with the team. Like that's cool. I guess I'm not saying the Seeker has been lighting the world on fire. But maybe you don't hop on a zoom call with the Bellevue Rotary Club and put one of your key players on blast like that. And he wasn't done not by a long shot because he had some thoughts that he wanted to get off his chest about the second ranked prospect in the organization, Julio Rodriguez. Julio Rodriguez has got a personality bigger than all of you combined. He is he is loud he is his English is not tremendous. Good Take, bro. Good. Take Got a huge personality bigger than all of you. But his English is not tremendous. Yeah, I'm sure that's not the first time you've said that and I guarantee it won't be the last. But first he had more than you want to say about Rodriguez, because why merely irritate Why merely irritate one of your best prospects when you can go in on him and really piss him off. Everybody, says 2021. He won't be here till 2022 or 2023. Fantastic kid. Really big on social media. He loves toe. Get out in front. He loves the Mariners. That's a tremendous approach. Right? Everybody says we'll be calling this guy this year. The hell we will maybe next year. And you know what? Maybe even the year after that. Make sure we keep on sucking before he gets here. Why bring him up? You might help us. I love that he chases that with quote. Ah, fantastic kid. Really big on social

Elizabeth Wetmore Interview

"Today. I'm rejoining Elizabeth what more Beth what more to talk about how? At Age fifty two, she published her first novel Valentine. A novel that not only is superb. It made its debut at number two on the New York Times bestseller list. The book is wonderful an impressive demonstration of the power of women's voices to carry a novel. Now, I'm very interested Elizabeth. How is it? That this. Is Your first novel at Age Fifty Two when did you start writing? Well I don't think I wrote my first short story until I was in my late twenties and I was a reader and I loved books and I read voraciously and impulsively as a little girl if somewhat in a somewhat unfocused manner and and really I don't come from a background where one becomes a writer at least not as a profession. So I think that this sort of combination of of a a kind of holding writers in such esteem I as a little girl in even as a young woman, I thought authors were. Other worldly they were sages and priests and rabbis and holy people live all sorts but I didn't think of writers as being particularly human or occupying the same world as the rest of us So I even write my first short story until I was in my late twenties but I read a lot and I love to read and I thought it must be a pretty holy profession to spend your time telling stories. I fell in love with reading and I had a hard time imagining who a writer might be. I, confused my teachers with riders. I thought that they and the books they taught me came from some specially magical and creative source and I felt song lucky. that. There were special classes when I was in elementary school, it had the ugly Title I. G C Intellectually Gifted Children. By the time I was in high school it was called AP advanced placement but whatever it was called we got to read the best books. One of my teachers took us not to the school library but to a public library where the head librarian was a friend of hers and we were able to take out adult books in this book, your new novel your first. Novel. Valentine one of the characters is reading the scarlet letter. There's a beautiful quote it's not identified, but I recognized it from Charlotte's Web. She here's the beauty of language, the children who are readers here that beauty and they find it on the local bookmobile. The comes to a nearby parking lot a parking lot that's near the strip. Strip joint. It's kind of amazing on the one hand you have. lost. Romantic children getting books and on the other hand you have the men watching the women taking their clothes off and that defied is the divide that defines this novel. But at a certain point Beth, you are at Iowa the Iowa Riders Program How did that happen? When I was waiting tables in Phoenix I started taking community fiction workshop It was being taught by to Grad students at Arizona State, and at that particular time, I don't know if they still do this. But at that time they the MFA students had to do some kind of community service project. So these two guys were teaching this community fiction writing workshop and. I sort of made my way into that and that was where I started and then at some point I was able to to sort of I wouldn't say sneak-in but I was able to get permission to sit on an MFA level workshop at Asu and just sort of as a guest It was really lucky and I'm not sure it would happen today. But but the long and the short of it is I was able to sit in on a class being taught by Ron Carlson who really encouraged me than to apply to Grad School, and I'm the first generation of my family to go to college I. Grew up in a really really working class background. So Honestly It wasn't until I was in my late twenties that I even really knew that there were such things as MFA programs when I signed up for that community fiction workshop was when I learned that there were MFA programs out there So So I was encouraged by a by a mentor to to apply and I did and You know initially he had said to me go do some research and come back in. So I, I went and did a little reading and came back with a sort of list of places to fly in University of Texas Syracuse Iowa was not even on my radar until he said, why is in Iowa on? What year is this one, thousand, nine, hundred, nine, I went to I. I was at Iowa from two, thousand, two two. Then I think it's easy to forget that there are whole swats of the you know the population for whom these kinds of things just are not on the radar at all. I mean for me the biggest one of the biggest things that happened in my life ever and and I would hold it in the top ten to this day was the day that book mobile parked on that lot because for me men I could check out books at at my pleasure ride I could just ride my bike up and get them. I didn't have to wait for someone to take downtown to the to the one library you know. So these things were not on my radar. That one could devote one's life to to telling stories into thinking about beauty.

With a three week summer camp. Many teams plan to use five or six man starting pitching rotations. The Mariners Justin Dunne says he'll be ready for whatever role that club has in mind. As long as my name's on the conversation, make the decision tough. At the end of the day for skipping Woody toe, either from my name and take my name out, but just do everything I can date and day out. Give the best audition possible. The EMS continue their workouts A T Mobile park, adhering to Corona virus guidelines with staggered workouts in the morning and afternoon wearing facemasks and not spitting an adjustment for first basement Evan White, the whole spinning thing. And you know, looking the fingers playing first base and I want to be able to have a grip on ball, where some dumb for my entire baseball life. So I'm something takes getting used to. And Cleveland manager Terry Francona pushing for that club to change its Indians nickname, Francona says the climate is right to move forward from a racially insensitive moniker.

MLB announces 60-game season for 2020; Opening Day will be July 23 or 24

"Month from today you could be watching some some of of live live Major Major League League Baseball Baseball again again come come as as bill bill sports sports says says fewer fewer games games and and rule rule changes changes could could make make for for a a very very entertaining entertaining twenty twenty twenty twenty season season all all many many thought thought we we wouldn't wouldn't hear those words but MLB owners and players finally carved out a sixty game corona virus shortened season the actual schedule coming together but Seattle mariners GM Jerry Dipoto knows his team will only play games against clubs in the west and then the goal here in operating solely in the west is just to minimize travel try to promote safety to the extent that we can right by not moving the players around as the normal schedule requires the mariners still need state and county health department approval to turn Seattle's T. mobile park into a three week long training camp and play home regular season games no fans are allowed in the facility which will follow strict comprehensive CDC and MLB safety guidelines do the right thing and by that I mean we are going to make sure that to the extent we can control it that our players are in as safe an environment as they can be there are new rules designed to keep players healthy and speed up play for example pitchers will have a wet cloth in their pockets to avoid licking their fingers CBS baseball insider Jim Bodin likes the idea of putting a runner on second base in extra innings I love that I got to see in the world baseball classic and I know traditionalist won't like it at first but if they give it a chance it's a lot of fun and to get the game's over in ten or eleven innings instead of playing eighteen innings makes a lot of sense to me all teams will get to use a designated hitter sixty instead of one hundred sixty two baseball games alters the Seattle mariners player development strategy according to Dipoto anybody can get hot and and and make a run in and I guess on to that extent we are not as good a shot as anybody in two thousand one the mariners set an American League record with forty three wins and seventeen losses in their first sixty games they do that this summer and they probably end the long frustrating playoff drought
