Fans prepare for unprecedented Super Bowl weekend amid pandemic

"As many as 100 million people tuning into today's Super Bowl matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They might also take partake in the annual tradition of watching the Super Bowl ads a little more closely than they normally would watch commercials. CBS is Jeffrey Schott reports. Despite a year like no other with so much despair, these ads might maintain an upbeat, sometimes wacky demeanor here. Super Bowl ads may still be a mix of oddball comedy and some serious messaging. But Robert Thompson, professor of television and popular culture at Syracuse University, says some advertisers may sit out this year or focus on the pandemic. That the companies aren't advertising is that certain brands within their companies are not advertising. And some said, we will instead be spending our money on and then these various, you know, good deed types of things about getting the vaccine out and all that kind of thing not to. I don't mean to downplay thean importance of that kind of thing, But in many ways that is a form of advertising, Thompson says. The biggest change this year will be in the way we watch the game. With health leaders asking fans to avoid parties and only gather with immediate family. Super Bowl is like going back to the age of the Ed Sullivan Show when you had one television set, and everybody was watching the same thing at the same time. Not this year for a great many fans,

In a short week unless there's a tragic situation and this was nothing short of tragic. Marcus Paul 54 years old, a strength coach wasn't here in Dallas very long. He's a very good friend of Marcus of Mike McCarthy, the head coach. And a lot of cowboys reaching out. He actually played with Moose Johnson, the former Dallas cowboy fullback at Syracuse. He also played with Washington's head coach Ron Rivera, in Chicago in the NFL back in the eighties, So it's I hate having to start the show something negative. Thanksgiving. Dallas Cowboys Strength And Conditioning Coach Markus Paul Suffers ‘Medical Emergency – Undergoing Medical Tests’

"Paul the cowboy strength and conditioning coordinator was rushed to the hospital early yesterday after collapsing in his office at the team's frisco practice facility about seven thirty yesterday morning and he was of course they They called they called medical emergency responders and was was rushed to a hospital right away and the cowboys didn't release a lot of information. I decided that it happened. You know and that he was undergoing medical testing and and that while even even mentioned the testing errors that was part of what led to the problem. A rumor that that spread that that he had died and a lot of outlets published that he had passed away out. Part of the part of the problem was the fact that they had. They cancelled practice yesterday. because of this and no explanation was given so people thought. Okay this is this is more than just somebody not dislike covid nineteen or something or somebody somebody who had a heart condition and had to be taken the hospital. I saw it on a tweet that my daughter reid tweeted because marcus. Paula graduated from syracuse. In one thousand nine hundred eighty eight and they were outlets in syracuse reporting that he had died and his daughter issued a statement on facebook saying her fifty four year. Old dad was on life. Support in the family was praying for a miracle. That is apparently still the situation this morning. Although we don't know but yes. A lot of a lot of people did report That he had died and apparently some of that and again now. Now we're now we're wandering into You know rumor and speculation but apparently some of that came from one of the cowboys players. Who posted a tweet strongly implied or said that marcus paul had died and they were praying for him and they hope that he was watching over them. And and that sort of thing Tmz reported at ten forty six yesterday morning pacific time. of course. it's two hours. That marcus paul in fact is not dead former new york giants offensive. "Jeopardy host Alex Trebek, who's been battling stage four pancreatic cancer has passed away. He was 80 years old. The show's executive producer, Mike Richards, spoke with CNN about the final week of taping late last month. We usually do five shows a day He did three and then two on Monday and Tuesday. He was in pain and we knew it he had had surgery. I couldn't believe he was already back from the surgery that he had had just two weeks before that. I had chills. The entire thie entire tape day that first show of that that final week, which is the unbelievably the week of Christmas. He gives a speech talking about Togetherness how important family is and it will resonate even more now. Robert Thompson is professor of television and popular culture at Syracuse University, He says Trebek's legacy goes far beyond the game show appearance on the X Files in the 19 nineties, He got a spot in Stephen Colbert's final episode of The Colbert Report. Very interesting performance, and even in 2018. He was given the assignment to moderate a debate between candidates for the governor of Pennsylvania. That didn't turn out too well. But the very fact that Alex Trebek got that gig says something of his penetration into the culture. Trebek is survived by his wife and three Children.

CONFERENCE PREVIEW: The ACC has Virginia in the catbird seat, with Duke, North Carolina, Florida State and Louisville all giving chase

"So in our rankings, it goes Virginia North Carolina like you pointed out after that it's Florida State Louisville but you had those in The Opposite Order Louisville Florida State I. I think you can argue either way, but you mentioned you talk to the North Carolina staffer. Recently, I talked to somebody at Florida state. Within the past week and they were openly wondering if they if this team. was going to be better than last season's team and last season's team of course, won the ACC, and so I take that for whatever it's worth but. In Tallahassee they think they've got a they think they've got a team that's going to finish. Fifth in the fourth or fifth in the ACC. What's interesting here is I know and Louisville's also. I think quietly really in on their roster I. think There's a line after Florida State and Louisville another tier if you will. When we get to the teams after that? I listen. I. Have Been Wrong about FSU LIKE I say it was good humor here but be tournament picks or general projections I have been off on Fsu more often than been correct. Efficacy was twenty, six and five when the ACC last season and lost Trent forest loss Patrick Williams lost Devin for cell I mean those are the teams four best players they're not that it doesn't still have talent but. That would be just a hell of a deal there. If Leonard Hamilton could make that happen to combine them with Louisville, real, quick I I actually think. It's I think that Louisville can be close to what Lewis last season it was ninth and Ken Palm. It went twenty, four seven it loses all five of its starters but. I just again legit because we're doing this in real time like just like David Johnson Samuel Williamson are are two names that are that in my opinion need to be on our top one, hundred one players and then they bring carly. Jones in from Radford who apparently might be their best player and You know it could be a twenty two point. Game Guy. is going to have a different look to them this season. The top of the ACC is totally fascinating I. Really do think it's Virginia and the other four we've mentioned. Almost, put them in any order. I can't quite see Louisville being top team in the league I can't get there but I think it could be super competitive and everyone below Virginia they're is GonNa make for an interesting race we had in our voting Miami coming in at six and then Syracuse at seven and it's interesting like. Last season I remember talking about this briefly and then you know pain. Democrats and everything's over. So whatever. But. Here's Syracuse. Again picked seventh in our preseason poll ACC poll. In terms of the panelists, some people had them as low as nine. I think you had eight I had him seven. So I'm more of a believer than most but. How many times do you think Syracuse has finished in the top five in the ACC in the past six seasons? Trivia Thanh. Say Zero Zero is the answer two, thousand fifteen eighth two, thousand, sixteen, Ninth, two, thousand, seventeen seventy, two, thousand, eighteen, tenth, two, thousand, nine, hundred, seventh last season six, zero, top. Top five finishes in the League Past Seasons there are twenty, eight and twenty, eight in the. Past. Three seasons they had a surprising final four in two, thousand sixteen and a surprising sweet sixteen in two thousand eighteen. So that Ma- ask some of this, but it is undeniable that. For, one reason or another you know that's one of the biggest brains in college basketball and it hasn't been operating like one of the biggest brains in college basketball lately,

"So. How are here so you? Holding up in the midst of all this madness. I, you know in the grand scheme of things. I feel very lucky but that doesn't mean that on a daily basis I'm not like pulling my hair and. Try to remember Hala game but definitely, it's been a little crazy I. don't know if you feel this I was thinking about this recently like it just it's weird that it's Gotten Kind. Of normalized on. So many levels with what's going on. It's like we've just adjusted. You know how you need. I think it also involves a certain degree of denial. Yeah. There's a lot of. Yeah. Because I think he caught up to me emotionally about two three weeks ago. I'm constantly busy with things. So and then one day, I couldn't be busy enough. Credibly fatigued. And there was nothing happening in terms of my health, my life to sort of explain it that I think he just like. It was just so much constant noise. Yeah. That I felt like I couldn't escape. It was just like Oh my God I just need to. decompress I spent a couple of days disconnected reading Brooke, taking long naps. Like I didn't realize how much I needed it until I needed it. It's just insane what's happening it's just it's so crazy the politics right now are just it's so upside down and then at the same time, there's this undercurrent of trying to. Just live logic just the logistics of it you know. With life staff and then your lake in the new the noise and what's happening to is just so the upheaval is insanity. So I'm with. But I haven't had that moment. Me We. Finally, we went camping on our land couple of weekends ago we bought land up Nevada on duck sweep made husband myself three-year-old. We all moved to Syracuse New York mayor for new job that I got as a tenure track professor at Syracuse University. So that's like a massive change but. With living in Syracuse it was like, okay. We're going to get at least get landed on exit. WE'RE GONNA move out stay he'd. Have some sort. It's to have rumors, but they going out and camping was the I. Guess that resonates with what you're talking about like just kind of shutting down a little bit was very helpful. The quiet that's for sure I find these conversations give me at least an hour respite. I can. I get to talk shop with interesting people and. Usually am left with. Not usually almost every time. Left with A feeling of positivity positivity in hope. So I hope that that's what listeners to take away from it when they when they listen to the show. Oh, yeah and I think just like a segue from the evening with the masters I think that that was an I'm making my way through the talks right now video. Again we three year olds I just I didn't make to a lot of them over the summer as the timing of it for the East Coast. It was bedtime every time it was happening. Facebook bans QAnon conspiracy theory accounts across all platforms

"This past week, Facebook decided to take down conspiracy theories pushed by the online movement. Known askew and on Wired magazine editor in chief Nicholas Thompson has some background It's one letter, but it spells out a bizarre conspiracy theory with President Trump at the center. My president walked out there in front of the Church of the Holy Bible. Q. Representing someone or something called Q. And Wei will not. Kallie Got Tio? We're Americans. What exactly is Q and a Human on is a bundle of different beliefs. But the one that often gets focused on the most is the idea that Donald Trump is fighting and winning a war against Satanic cannibalistic child molesting top Democrats starting in 2017, a mysterious someone calling him or her or themselves. Q. Began posting tangled clues on Internet message boards. They're called Q Drops full of false information and styled is if they come from a Washington insider. Whitney Phillips is an assistant professor at Syracuse University who studies disinformation. This idea that you have a group of Obama holdovers who are actively trying to underline trumpet every turn as sometimes that is explicitly referred to as the deep state of the theory is this belief that you are secretly saving the world from this Titanic? Hold pedophiles and cannibals. Does that sound like something you are behind? I haven't. I haven't heard that President Trump has refused offers to distance himself from Cuban on. Is that supposed to be a bad thing or good thing? If, uh, if I can help save the world from problems, I'm willing to do it. I'm willing to put myself out there. Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has another diagnosis. What would you say to President Trump for not rejecting that conspiracy and the people who believe in it? "Able to welcome back to another episode of this week in photo I'm your host. Frederik. Van Johnson today I have the honour and pleasure of sitting down with the illustrious Nikon shooting. Dixie Dixon, she talked about world. He's got he's working on what letter here we're GonNa talk about Nikon and all that good stuff dixie welcome to the show. Are you doing amazing thanks so much for that great intro I. Appreciate it. It's all true. It's all. You're awesome. I'm excited to be here today and chat with you. Cool. Well, let's talk about stuff. So you know we've just you know full disclosure you and I did an interview before over on the sky loon behind the scene podcast that I also host but I wanted to invite you onto this show is well because I want to. kind of slightly different direction and. Introduce you to this week and photo audience as well as the behind the scene audience if you subscribe to behind the scene search for it and go subscribe to that one too. So Yeah. Good stuff. Who is Dixie Dixon? Ukraine. So I've seen your name in fact. I. was just doing a livestream with a friend of mine who's also a Nikon shooter and I said I gotta go I. GotTa Hang Up because I'm getting ready to talk to Dixie Dixon and he's like I was like, have you heard of Dixie Dixon? He's like Have I heard of Dixie Dixon. It's like, have you heard of Prince? So. Tell us how did you get from where you were to being kind of a household name in the in the photography world? I appreciate that so much. Gosh it's been a really crazy adventure. I've had photography jobs. So I started out shooting the cheesy little league pictures shot with film actually was the Nikon F G camera, and so we'd be doing all those cheesy soccer ball like posing with a soccer balls and Just, the team photos and stuff like that, and then I ended up joining the yearbook staff and my image ended up making the cover of the yearbook. So for me, it was like a way to get out of my shell a little bit. I'm very much a sort of an introvert. So it was sort of felt rebellious and helped me get to know people and communicate and have fun and so that for me was like a moment. Wow maybe I could actually do this for a living. So I ended up going off to college I would have loved to majored in photography, but I really thought. Maybe I should figure out the business so I can actually figure out how to make a living doing this. So I ended up studying. Entrepreneurship at TCU and fell in love with the business side and then I ended up studying abroad with a world renowned fashion photographer I literally googled fashion photography study. Abroad. And there was one program through Syracuse University. So I got to go and study with Jeff Licata and listen over in London and Prague and do my first big fashion shoot, and that is when I really fell in love with the fashion photography side of things. So yeah, it's fun adventure I felt like it was yesterday but it's It's crazy how fast time flies and I got a job sheeting TV show and it just all came together. I have so many questions like I'm I'm curious how it works from. A lot of a lot of the twitter audience. Sure as the same question like the. One one path to success as a photographer seems to be fashion right? You got to be a fashion slash commercial photographer. You gotta be that person walking on said and you're in charge and you know the House music stumping in the background and models are doing their thing. There's a wind machine. Blowing. And somebody's up there like stevie nicks with the white thing. So how do you? How do you get there like what's what's the path from leaving school in entrepreneurship going through the internship and seeing how it's done from behind the scenes to building a brand like your brand and being sponsored and representing brands like Nikon? Yes. So it's been I always feel like as an entrepreneur you think you're just GonNa, go a nice gradual progression upward, but it's like. It's an interesting. It's an interesting journey if you will. There's ups and downs along the way. I. Mean my first few years I was shooting everything I was shooting weddings and portrait's and product. If anyone called me to do a shoot I knew how to do it. I said Yes to almost everything yeah. Just to just to pay the bills and whatnot so I ended up up to different websites My fashion website and then my commercial website I mean my wedding website and portrait website. So basically, when people would reach out and they wanted portraits, weddings, I was sent him to that website, and then all the fashioned stuff on my fashioned website was all three work that I had shocked my portfolio. So ultimately, you have to show the type of work that you WANNA be shooting. So I was wanting to shoot the fashion work so you have. To, go out and shoot that work, and then you're gonNA, eventually start attracting those type of clients. So then I started shooting for modeling agencies, they would do like paid portfolio shoots for their models. It started out as free portfolio shoots and then they ended up paying me to shoot their models for awhile and do that quite a lot and then that led to like two boutiques and showing them my work and ask him if I could collaborate.

How Big Oil Misled The Public Into Believing Plastic Would Be Recycled

"How did millions of Americans come to believe that most plastic would be recycled when that's not actually true Laura Sullivan is GonNa take the story from here. Okay, it seemed like a good place to start was the plastic industry they make the stuff. Did they know the truth about recycling plastic? I headed to one of the birthplaces of plastic plastic comes from oil. But really comes from the dupont chemical company and some of the plastic industries old records are housed in the Hagley Library. It's this stone building on the grounds of the first dupont family home in Delaware. This is a place that actually used to store sodium nitrate back when Dupont made gunpowder not plastic. There's an archivist with a bow tie a handlebar moustache named Lucas Clawson, and he looks like someone would make cocktails. Lucas wheeled out a cart of boxes. Thank you. Files that documented the discovery of a chemical marvel that changed the world, a product that looked like glass but break a product that could also look like lightweight fluff but keep things hot called Styrofoam and incredible new film that can preserve food for days called. Saran. Wrap there were a couple of clues about recycling inside the boxes from the industry's most powerful lobby group at the time the Society of the plastics industry their job was to lobby for the big oil and plastic companies. So think Exxon Chevron Dow Dupont. And there's this one memo from one, thousand, nine, hundred, seventy, three, the. Movement is just being born, and one of the top people in the plastics industry is talking about how the cost of sorting plastic is high but it seemed like a lot of the documents were were missing I find reference to a memo a report, but then I noticed that someone had drawn a line through it Lucas. Can I ask you a question absolute. Okay. Why? In this section are all. These APPS. So many of these. Cross out because those records are no longer. Here anymore day or not where did they go the society of the Plastics Industry Astra them back think they really yes is an unusual. That doesn't happen often. Do you do know why they took them. Did they say? I, do not know. Okay Of course, there are all kinds of reasons why an industry lobbying group might want. It's records back I did call society the plastic folks and ask them if I could see the records they took they said No. So I headed to another library this time at Syracuse University and they're buried in its tax, our boxes of files donated from an industry consultant. Actually the industry consultant died in the why found the boxes and gave them to Syracuse and inside these boxes. I found what I was looking for a report was sent to top oil and plastic executives in nineteen seventy three. It says, recycling plastic is nearly impossible. There is no recovery from obsolete products. It says recycling is costly sorting. It is infeasible plus it says plastic degrades every time you try to reuse it. So the oil in plastic industry new, they've known for almost fifty years. and. Then I found more confidential memos in meetings echoed decades of this knowledge insight thousands of pages of courtroom discovery. There's a speech from an industry insider in nineteen seventy four when it comes to recycling large quantities plastic, it says there is quote serious doubt that it can ever be made viable on an economic basis. Now. Okay. Sure. Anyone can take something plastic melted down and make something else. But what these documents are saying is that it's expensive, it's time consuming it's chemically problematic and it's just cheaper and easier to make plastic out of new oil instead of plastic trash there are all kinds of names in these documents men who have never spoken publicly before and there was one name I kept seeing over and over he. was, giving speeches at fancy hotels, hosting conferences and Berlin. Phoenix, they called him a bigwig. He was the industry's top lobbyist. Larry Thomas this is the man I had to find but do you know how many Larry Thomas's there are in the United? States. Thousands I'd call say are you the Larry Thomas used to work in plastics? Are you leery Thomas who used to be president of the Society of the plastics industry? And then finally, I'll prompt Merrin the plastics industry no getting around it the BIGWIG himself I'll walk. Do that's for sure. Yeah. My personal views certainly didn't always job with. US I had the quake as part of my job. That's the way it was there. He's retired now on the coast of Florida but I told him I've been reading all about his exploits in the world of plastic. Where would the offices the officers were? What would you think they would be K. Street yes. Twenty Five K. Street Casey was the heart of lobbying in Washington and it was in those offices at top executives in the world's most powerful oil and plastic companies met they had meeting after meeting about a little problem they were having there was just too much plastic trash consumers didn't like it. In one of the documents I found from nineteen nine, hundred nine Larry wrote the top oil executives at Exxon Chevron, Amoco Dow Dupont proctor, and gamble in a bunch of others he wrote the image of plastics is deteriorating at an alarming rate. We are approaching a point of no return. The classic. I was under fire. We gotta do. What it takes to take the heat off. Because we want to continue to make classic equality, they wanted to keep making plastic but the more you make the more plastic trash you get and the obvious solution to this is to recycle it but they knew they couldn't remember it's expensive. It's a great. Discussion about how difficult it was to recycle. They knew that the infrastructure wasn't there. So really have recycling amount to a whole lot. So they needed a different plan. Larry Decides to call a bunch of meetings at fancy hotels. He summons the Society of the plastics people executives Larry doesn't remember the specifics of each particular meeting but one of his deputies at the time Lou Freeman he remembers you could. Get. Back all the layers of my brain. Lou, remembers a bunch of meetings the basic question on the table was. You guys you're our trade association in the plastics industry aren't doing enough. We need to do more. This one dupont executive was telling Lou. It's your job to fix plastics imaging problem. So what do you need? You said, I think if we had five million dollars. which seemed like a lot of money. If we had five million dollars we could. We could. We could solve this problem. And My boss said in response. If you add five million dollars, you would know how to spend it effectively. Well, they came up with a way to spend five million dollars that and a lot more I. Remember this. This is one of these exchanges that sticks with me thirty five years later however long it's been. Anna was You know what we need to do is advertise our way out of it. That was the idea thrown out. The industry decided to advertise its way out of a can't recycle it problem. The possibilities off plastics plastics. From dense. Touted the benefits of a product that after it was used for the most part was headed to a landfill incinerator or even ocean. Look empty yet it's anything but trash it's full of potential. These commercials carried an environmentalist message, but they were paid for by the oil and plastic companies eventually leading to fifteen million dollars a year industrywide ad campaign promoting plastic. So I asked Larry why why spend tens of millions of dollars telling people to recycle plastic when the new recycling plastic wasn't going to work? and. That's when he said it. The point of the whole thing if the public thinks so recycling is working. Then they're not going to be concerned about the environment and if they're not concerned about the environment. Though keep buying plastic it wasn't just Larry in lieu who said this I spoke to half a dozen top guys involved in the industry at the time who all said plan was unfolding and it went beyond at the industry funded recycling projects and local neighborhoods expensive sorting machines that didn't make any economic sense school recycling contests. All of this was done with great fanfare. except I decided to go track down almost a dozen of the industry's biggest projects like the one where they were going to recycle plastic and national parks or the one that was going to recycle all the plastic and school lunches in New York they all failed and disappeared quietly but there was one more part of this campaign, the final piece that did stick around. That recycling symbol with the numbers in the middle this symbol has. So. Much confusion about what is and is not recyclable in the plan to stamp it on every plastic item popped up a lot in the documents I learned of a quiet campaign to lobby almost forty states to require that every single plastic item have this symbol stamped on it. Even if there was no way to economically recycle it, I should note that some. Environmental is also supported. The symbol thinking would help, separate and sort plastic but the industry knew the truth the symbols were causing problems. Warm report told executives in July nineteen ninety-three that the symbol is being misused. It's creating quote unrealistic expectations about what plastic people can recycle. It's being used as a green marketing tool, but the executives decided to keep the symbol anyway. I did reach out to plastic industry folks and they said that the symbols were only meant to help sort plastic and that they were not intended to confuse people but the symbol in the ads in the projects, all of this basically convince people Larry says the idea that the vast majority of plastic can be recycled was sinking in. Say that. After a while the atmosphere seems to change I. Don't know whether it was because people thought that recycling has solved the problem. was that they were just so in love with plastic products that they were willing to overlook the environmental concerns that were were mounting up. It's been thirty years now since most of those plans have been put into place and the public's feelings about plastic have started to shift again, people are reading stories about oceans choked with plastic trash and trace amounts of this stuff inside our bodies, and once again, people are wanting to ban plastic and the survival of the oil companies is at stake.

"You caroline on the way to winning you beat Roy Williams in the final four. Don't don't beat him blow him out. Roy Is then wearing the Jayhawk wearing two thousand. Three hundred percents doesn't happen if Kansas wins. The national title in Two Thousand Three and then Roy wrote lineup. He's not wearing the Jayhawk he's lying. I don't feel bad. Whatever the only reason he did that is because Kansas fans were so upset when he left that he felt that bad. That he's like you. Kinda overdid it Roy. You should put your foot down with like L. With all the I give you fifteen. Good years you not accept the kiss my ass. But he's too nice but then not only all of that but then the way. Kansas eight ended up being perfect. Because it was the missed free throw by Memphis just like a teamwork missed the free throw Syracuse. And there's the scramble. They need a three to send it to overtime. Instead of getting shot blocked they make it. They win over time. It was all perfect. I don't think he's got a scripted or any barriers fan so it all worked out for Kansas. It was just crazy. The the the wheels that went emotion when Roy left and they started turning on d do like Kansas fans. Dean Smith probably not anymore but I I was digging up all these articles that are written about how held Roy. Dean is a Kansas Guy Dean from Kansas play. Kansas Kansas through and through. Why would he? Why would he stabs all modern the back like this just to get Roy Williams North Carolina? The whole thing the whole thing was juicy but it worked out for everybody. Everybody says well. It's funny because like just the the drama behind at the Kansas. The Kansas connective tissue North Carolina with fog Allen with Dean Smith with Larry Brown with Roy Williams and all those guys basically being able to pick and choose their loyalties. So it's like a and they have the two best backyards to pick you. Don't I mean it's like you want Lawrence Wilt Chamberlain and all in fog on all these guys deeds method? You Are Frank. Maher or the list goes on. And on Ron Leaning Rosenthal is people end is because Dean Smith obviously like became the North Carolina person at that point but he still had such an affinity for Kansas. That he didn't want them to like he knew how they all know how fickle situation is and how much it will blow up and it's just so funny that they tried to do it all behind closed doors in secretly and like you know trying to get the all the cards and all the ducks in a row and this is the year. Roy should leave. North Ron's ready to get rid of met thirty this year. It's like all these things were just like being decided behind closed doors but they were also getting leaked and it was time on. The Internet wasn't around like it is today so it was all rumor mill. It was all just like folklore and I think that's why I was so dramatic when it all happened because it didn't even feel real like when ruined it came out of the Roy. Williams is here as a kid. It took you know some days for that to be like. Are you serious? Jawad Williams is going to have its coach. What we're going to be the has to be. The biggest is that the biggest higher in college basketball says since then has has there been a bigger. I'm trying to think of a moment that was bigger than that. Like when you said like Oh man this is Ms Calipari or Roy Area Kentucky. I mean but I don't really think that's that's maybe it is. I guess it's sort of the same thing ish but yeah I don't know but but Memphis wasn't like it was more defensible because like he's leaving Memphis using conference. Usa At the time Memphis Day. Just like hiring the hottest coaches. Yeah this one is like Oh my God. Someone's leaving Kansas right after going to the national title game. That's crazy but it all worked out for everybody. The wheel motion bill self goes to Kansas. Bruce Weber gets the Illinois job. If Bruce Waiver. If that doesn't happen Bruce Weber doesn't inherit. Bill Secretes go to the title game. Maybe Bruce Weber like when he gets fired from Illinois. He doesn't end up at Kansas state and may be yeah like he ends up Kansas State which actually helps Kansas fans as well right. Right is the rebel receiver for fans. Did Not want to listen to this. If you listen to this now you understand all this head. It was all it was all. It was inevitable enough about Kansas. Though we gotta talk about Syria I could I could just subconsciously feel Syracuse fans getting mad at spend time talking about the damn champions the aftermath of Syracuse so Carmelo goes pro. Obviously we all know his story. I guess I guess I'm looking back on a date. Carmelo Anthony. His what's wild about. This is that he spends one year in college and we've made this point before his one year in college has overshadowed he's had a hall of fame MBA career. He's going to go to the hall of fame. He's one of the one of the greatest. Nba players ever. Even though he's never won a title. People say this is all whatever the guys. The guys unbeliev is one of the best players of his generation. Whatever and yet he still arguably not even arguably to me but like arguably to the the greater picture better known for his one year Syracuse because it was just that magical he was. He was that good. That's pretty crazy to think about. Is that people still to this day. Talk about Carmelo Syracuse Carmelo in the Olympics in NBA Carmelo NBA Carmelo. Is everyone favor version of carpeting? Say It's like Olympics in Syracuse. Carmelo battle it out for the top and then it's like a long drop. It's like yeah. Nba Mellow and the guys. Like one of the greatest scores. He's unbelievable and when he was on the Doug it's unbelievable when they could have gone the finals a few times. But somehow we forget about all that sort of stuff I don't so let's the Carmelo. Aftermath is like his legacy will endure forever as the guy who We've been joking little tongue-in-cheek about like inventing the one and done thing. But even if even if he didn't invent the one and done it's just like he he is forever. The model of using one year of college basketball to boost your profile to submit your legacy and then in hit the ground running as a as a bonafide star and then gay Jerry. Go ahead oh I was GONNA say forget that if he gets drafted by the Pistons would have won a championship. Most likely unless he took all the shots away from teacher on prints or something but they probably wanted Jamie. Then everyone would say Carmelo. Anthony Bajic Johnson Larry Brown would have ran out of NBA basketball basketball actually Gerry McNamara aftermath. We all know he finished his career. No six with the legendary big tournament run where Syracuse wants. Four Games of four days on all of them were basically possession of title game. If you pick by four ends up stuck in the Stadium in the first round McNamara just completely runs out of gas but He he becomes a legend in his own right host. This like that's that was what was cool about. Mcnamara's like it wasn't just he had this. One Ron faded into oblivion he. He was great throughout his entire career. Of course we get the Bay We wouldn't win ten fucking Games Without Gerry. Mcnamara the legendary rant. That will always always think about what I think Gerry. Mcnamara behind saying we wouldn't have won ten fucking games and I think a string cheese but for McNamara to book in his career with the national title and then of course they lose in the first round of his senior year that the tournament. But that.

"I can't bring this up enough times. Maybe because I'm always consumed by it, and that is the cold. We just went through with the national weather service is projecting an Arctic blast. We're talking about. One of these legendarily cold games cold his game ever in Kansas City. How if at all do you believe that impact Mahomes? Well, you know, obviously played in the cold game this past weekend and seem to to handle it. Well, you know, a lot of guys greenie win. It gets cold. They want to go to a glove. You know, we've seen people do it in the past. In fact, Tom Brady, you know, did it early on in his career would not be surprised to see him. Do it again this week? And the reason guys do that is listen when it gets that cold the leather on a football just gets slipped. It's hard to to handle. Sometimes, you know, the other thing that you know, you got to do. So when you've got to deal with that you then are saying, okay. Well, now, I'm doing something differently that I haven't done all season long. And then you have to ask yourself like is that guys control and command with where he wants to put the football the same if he decides to wear glove. I wouldn't expect Mahomes to do it considering he didn't go to it last week. How it affects guys it affects guys differently. I mean, she Tom Brady basically wears a wet suit, you know, underneath his unit. Perform to deal with the cold temperatures. So everybody does it differently. I I have to say after seeing homes play last week. I don't think it ends up being a big issue to me. Thanks you million for this. You'll jump back with us a little later this morning. We'll do some more football. But back to what we lead with this morning. Our top story of the day. Again, a really significant injury for the number one college basketball team in the country Duke lost at home last night against Syracuse. But that's not the headline. This is that's true Jones, maybe the least known of their four freshmen, but a very important part of what they do. A key integral PC is sort of the reader of that group and down. He goes it's at suffered a sprained shoulder. I he thought it was a broken collarbone. It appears not to be that. So that is a very tough injury for him in DJ Bilas is whether it's called the game last night. And thank you for jumping in with us here. Jay, how would you put into context? Just how significant that injury is to do. Greenies potentially devastating to dukes championship hopes if trae Jones cannot play going forward, he is the most important piece on that team. He's the best defender in the country in my judgment, a little early to say he's the best defender I've seen in a Duke uniform, but he certainly the best freshman defender I've ever seen in a Duke uniform. He does so many things with his pressure on the ball early in the game. Syracuse had to turn their facts, and they were running their office wait further out on the floor out of an operating area. Duke at five steals in the first six minutes with trae Jones in there when he went out. I think they had only one steal the rest of the way in Syracuse could face the basket and attack from their normal operating areas, and they were much different team. They may have won the game. Anyway, who knows I'm not saying that's why they won. But it's a big factor in the game. And how it was played and trae Jones with his leadership with the ball. But more importantly with his defense is pressure on the ball the way he plays off the ball allows his teammates to get into passing lanes. It's a totally different team. Different feel without him in there. Yeah. And again, I'm not a doctor and neither you, but the athletes tend to know things like this. I mean does this feel to you?.

"He's an amazing athlete. You see him? Get back in transition swapped the offensive player tries to maintain under two minutes ago. Syracuse is down one tightest battle has. Other ideas. What am I this kid at not sit down? He was scored thirty to Syracuse the lead eighty five eighty four just over twenty seconds to play do still down one. We're going to get it desire on Zion flick it inside and they call the foul you like the call I like to call. Syracuse planner trae Mark Zoll Zion. Does a terrific job of continuing to force it to the bucket when we get to the line especially late in the basketball game. You got to step up and knock them down. The first misses the second Zion thirty five points, ten rebounds. What we're going to overtime where do is down five. RJ? Barrett knocked down three Baruch twenty three point sixteen boards, nine dupe still alive. Coach K calls a timeout. Ensuing possession, Eric guns. Syracuse the drive. No. But Yuka was there. He's the vendor called the how they call the foul on earlier on the plate was I on he drills that one ensuing. Do possession desperation time Zion. No, they're gonna get an offensive rebound then kicking around Alex O'Connell. And this is sort of the theme of the night Duke would shoot just nine forty three from three. Point range at the top contested shot there. And in the end is Syracuse stunning. The faithful at Cameron indoor ninety five ninety one. The orange win it for their hall of fame. Coach Luke's great team. They don't have two of their key guys. It's just breaks of the game touch. It was just you know, they have those two guys the whole game. Not that we are. But you can you can assume that everything is always going to be great and life happens wife happened to our team tonight. This was a very difficult night for our basketball program and our team, and we'll you know, we'll figure out ways of handling it. I historic loss for Duke entering this game. They were ninety all time as the number one team against unranked opponents, not only have they won those games. They'd won by an average margin of twenty eight points. But it really does feel to me like the story line. Here is Trey Jones, and here's the deal. He's the least heralded of the big four freshman. He's certainly the least talked about. But if you really pay attention, everyone talks about him being the glue of this team. He's the guy who helped put it all together, and that's a bad injury. What does this mean for do? It's a horrible injury do blue devils, but we're not going to act like they don't have arguably the greatest coach of all time. We're not going to act like they have to at a top three or four lottery. Picks in this year's draft. We're not gonna act like they don't have a team full of all Americans right because Syracuse still went on a roll play the trademark zone may do re perimeter oriented without Cam reddish. They took away left. They took away. Don't they forced them out of their office out of your comfort zone? That's a huge loss. However, but trust when when you have. Coach gate, they'll find ways to respond. No question about it. I heard it's entire press conference after the game. He said that when I went down Jones study at broken his collarbone, and they were able to do an x-ray immediately. And it isn't that? So that's good news a broken collarbone. He'd be done for the year. Clearly, it does appear from this. I'm not a doctor and he come back and play some you're gonna come back having AC joint answer. I actually had a shot before a game in an AC joint to play. So I think what's deterrment starts to get a little bit closer and conference play continues to progress if they're going to need him. He probably could go in a pinch. But ultimately lowering the he'll he'll be healthy before the season. Yeah. The madness of marches two months away. We'll see what winds up happening there. So Duke goes down. That's our first basketball note of the night. The second comes from a guy who right now is flat out on stoppable James harden, and the rockets no Clint Capella his team into falling around like flies cappella out four to six weeks with a thumb injury..

Without freshmen can't read issue won the game over the weekend. He had the flu early first-half. We're going to seize ion no Zion. Yes. Looking good early. Twats? Here's the moment. Duke is fourteen to six trae Jones, a critical freshmen in his group. Jalen is going to go down and go down hard. That's a big time entry for the Duke blue devils. He's a lockdown defender. And I'm like you got the top six guys back from team that was a borderline top forty team last year 'cause they finished forty first at compa they weren't one of the sixteen. Best teams in the country. They were one. The sixteen last teams to still be playing. And so I'm always aware of that that it's honestly same thing happened a little the Chicago loyalist Chicago was was a borderline top thirty team at the end of the season. They weren't really one of the four best teams. But people that voted for them in the preseason. Eight people were like, well, they're bringing some good pieces back from final fourteen. They gotta be good bringing some good piece. They're bringing three of the top six back from a borderline top thirteen. They could be good. But they might not. And I do think they're going to be good. But I don't think they're top twenty five and was Syracuse. We might find out that same thing maybe bringing back type six guys from top forty teen doesn't actually make you a fifteen quite possibly. That's it perish. Fran for shila was on the call for this game. And he laid out a fairly damning valuation of O'Shea Brett, which I agreed with the second. He said he said percent is playing for the NBA and the scouts in the building and not for Jim behind and Syracuse. He's seventeen of his twenty one three pointers. He has not looked this season. Like the player he was last season as a freshman. In fact, I think Recep at his best is better than Thais battle and more talented. Syracuse just isn't getting enough from their Jalen carries a freshman. He's been promising overall. Jalen Clarice played relatively well. It's been nice to see. But Syracuse was. It wasn't just Bobo who was who was fun to watch. An and by the way, he he is very much. Easing into that expectation enroll of Bobo being just a different kind of big man can handle the ball pass shoot. We'll have plenty opportunities this season to get to him. And I know that we will. But just a quick note on him and Oregon like Oregon needed that win more than Syracuse back twelve isn't as good as the organ, finish this Owen to and gone home. It would have just put the Pac twelve in that program in a little bit of a tough position. Skews camping a big wins. Bobo look nice but Syracuse overall perish defensively zone. Kind of let them down. I don't think this team is deep again as behind wants it to be so yes, it's too into Nova's the other notable too and two team coming out of this weekend. And if you're Syracuse in the fan base, obviously, you're you're let down in a major way because you were thinking that you'd probably be able to get out of their winning both you would've thought the chances of you losing both were particularly low. But if you take that first loss in the expected happens where ll be to Oregon now. Okay. You're suddenly going up against a fellow ranked team couldn't. Handle that there. So we'll see what happens last note on Syracuse is this they get to rebound and get well at home against Colgate. The annual the annual Kogi Syracuse game, I think they've played each other literally every single season of coaching tenure, which makes sense because the geography didn't they go to Ohio State pairs at the end of November. And then everything else is home games in nonleague play. So will the Georgetown win actually age? Well, will you beat buffalo at home? You probably will. But as fans, no they lost last season at home to a Saint Bonaventure team that maybe might not have even been quite as good as this year's buffalo team. So Syracuse will be favored to win that game. But if you don't beat Ohio State on the road, and you drop by their home to Georgetown, home to buffalo or homed northeastern who I think will have a resume probably that.

"Now, Florida state won't win this game. Yeah, yeah, that's right. Yeah. What you need, you need another. If I give, if I give you fourteen points, pick sixes. I don't. I still don't think you get to that total, especially this is like just some more context this road game. This is a road game. At Syracuse, this is an offense that doesn't really understand what it's supposed to do yet, and it's a Syracuse team that's pretty clear on how does things very comfortable do them that way. This year kids defense is still not very good, at least based on their opener, western Michigan, but the offense is good enough that they will. It feels like they will constantly be winning the field position battle. So even if they stole out and kick a field goal or have to punt or something, Florida state will Florida state will not be getting the advantage of, oh, we're starting at the Eric. We're starting to Syracuse forty eight. We're starting in our own forty-sevens shit like that. They will always unless they are turning the ball over. It does not feel like a game where they can just be like, yeah, we just one field position battle all night, and that's how we were able to make things easier on our offense. That is real struggle. Also by the way I got their defense has five picks already. So. Turnover margin looking, right? Yeah, this is not as bad plus it'd be BC wake is the is the battle for the king of the Atlantic. Early on? Yeah, wait threes a trip to hell. Like eighteen might be weird. We three is definitely odd. Steve adagio kind of looks like a Merman. Could be could be Poseidon. Ish. Yeah, right. Like like a like a walrus, Merman maybe Poseidon's personal trainer. Right. That's it. He's Poseidon personal trainer. He's not Poseidon. Don't see him ever. I don't see him ever like getting comfortable with the beard right now, man cheeks. I can't free freedom. We're not. We're not skipping thin day. We're just not Steve adagio is he's in the shape of beer..

"I think that we're doing that and i think that we're a team on the rise in and the way why i'm building is i wanna i wanna step once we start winning i never want to go back for losing your and i think that we're doing it the right way we're doing it slow for having some successes we know we had the clemson when we had the virginia tech whether you're four we've had some setbacks obviously the month of november hasn't been the best month around here at syracuse new york but i think we're on the right track and i think we're right around the corner from doing some things that uh i've done previously at other stops and you've had had success and and we've covered it here on espn radio in in what is that success i mean what what are you pitching the kids that if a kid right now says you know what i can go to fsu or a may i can go to clemson and indurain on in him in syracuse what how're you guys differ what it what is coach dino babar's bringing to a young student athlete that he may not get somewhere else would make syracuse unique well first of all our family atmosphere up here will one big family were a law familiaux hana were we we have a lot of different things that are going on here but we just do the different way we want to lead the lead the league and picnics in barbecues along with at we want young and to get their degrees and wanted to grow up to be better fathers better something better husband's than us and you know we want to win some football game when we start winning our football games and we start competing from championships i think that we're going to be one of the teams that are going to be reckoned with were the only power five school with the dell and i think there's a lot of young men that want to go on to play in the national football league and is not a a of there is a lot of nice does uh it up in that league and i think that you can get your practice right here in syracuse.

"I mean the the last coach of syracuse of course scott schaefer said basically yes we just lost to louisville lot but it's better than be decapitated by isis so that's so that's where you're coming from and dino vapors is exciting and never compares syracuse football to being decapitated by assis guy speaking of digress guys this has been lovely syracuse talk i am now this has been beautiful but we also have to turn our attention to the defending national champions yet now when you talk about clemson glimpse in lost clemson yes simao clemson tigers whose health clemson lost they lost the syracuse this was a friday night game that lost by three points but even after this lost the ranked number seven in greatest they people so i think we all agree that clemson probably had the strongest september of any team the nation they be auburn debut louisville they'd be virginia tech all pretty handily are you mouth sensors internet on this podcast that every week anymore are you in or out on clemson sorta still being very much in the thick of things to secure third straight college football playoff berth bannu really setting the app to fail aren't you i have to that's my job do you i think that clemson is still in the thick of things yes do i think the clemson is super super wellpositioned no no looking back last year clemson won the national title despite suffering one headscratching lost during the regular season that loss obviously to pay it so we have the very very very recent proof of concept that not only eighteen but this team can over common inseason stumble install make the field and then from there with nothing but a couple of things.

"And say that a team is going to lose and then instead of doing that that team wins the national championship it feels kind nice lem that team that embarrasses itself on a national prime died platform admittedly different year different team but i'll take it and the added benefit of this being against my alma mater it's just so sweet it's so delicious and i feel compelled to say in case the schtick in the bit is not apparent everyone that i do not actively actually root against clemson i love that ad i love dish on watson watching him succeed in the nfl as an absolute thrill for me but i was kinda good it's kind of fun also this is like a huge thing for the sacchi's programme which we can get into more in a minute but this was pretty dope lake this was pretty cool and then link as this was happening the astor's beat the yankees what more could you walk ever random friday night know stood out to me when i think of syracuse football i think of it as being like this this seconds big the second show in syracuse you know there's the basketball team the dome seems kinda depressing act doesn't seem like a great place to enjoy football game but there was real life thereafter that after that wind to see all the all the fans go out on the field there was like it sort of said hey syracuse footballs and actual thing that exists it's not just the place greg policy comes to play quarterback like that that to doubtless it was like.
