"Keep them busy in other ways but when they do get the chance they say there's nothing like the feeling of the open ocean below and the endless stars up above. I'm alice winkler. And this is what it takes from the academy achievement. Yes the stars are remarkable. We we all have the star gazing out so we can really you know go out and find all the constellations because it's the sky has it's sometimes hard to see the constellations because there's just so many stories out there and there was one experience recently actually when we were on the amelia earhart expedition. We determined we were actually when the international space station was overhead of us. We were actually closer to people on the international space station than we were to any individual land so kind of put in that kind of scale into perspective of how far out we were and how removed we were on the planet It's you know you can be nothing but appreciative to to be not moment an have that an opportunity like that. It's amazing it's just very grateful. For how lucky i am. Make sure to check out our episode on. "This is wet. Notes here on scooby. Shock radio for sunday june twentieth. Two thousand and twenty one. And i up today. If you're a collector of tags like the dan tags that i talked about last time here on the show or like those tags you get when you dive the kitty wake on grand cayman. It seems like there's a new tag being offered on bonaire but this one is a little different now. The renewal foundation on air or are. Fb is teaming up with no novo and obio who is a plastic recycler on bon air. And they're creating this recycled plastic bbc tag. Now it's made from type two hd plastic and that's like the plastic you find in your shampoo bottles and they're being distributed at affiliated dive shops on the island under cost ten dollars. So if you're headed down there check out these very cool sky blue tags and oh by the way. The dive shops or serving as recycling centers for hdp type two plastic. Every little bit helps good job down here in bonaire way back in october of two thousand nineteen. I did a segment on project aware and subsequently. I talked about project aware week. They're coral reef conservation course and the project aware dive against debris specialty. So you can see. Project aware is very special to us it scuba shack. There's little doubt that patty is the driver and they just recently announced that project aware has now become the patty aware foundation and they announced this on world ocean day. Patty and patty aware foundation share emission to expand advocacy and achieve critical ocean goals while the patio where foundation will operate as an independent nonprofit organization is able to fully tap into patty brand and operations. This is clearly evident in the new logo prominently using the patty global diver. Also the website for patio aware foundation has moved under the patty domain thirty years strong and now strengthened for the future many of us who dive our dry suits get spoiled by the pockets on each leg for bringing all are necessary gear on a dive with easy access. But what do you do if you are in your three millimeter wetsuit with the bbc. That is not conducive to pockets. Well that's where something like the apex tech shorts come in no need to glue those pockets onto your wetsuit like we used to do now. I've had my apex tech shorts for a couple of years. Now and in two thousand and twenty one apex has redesigned tax shorts. And it looks like they did a great job. They're made of three millimeter. Neoprene two large dry suit style pockets with bundy's attacked with bungee attachment points. I really liked the way they did those pockets. The outside of the pocket also has a small zippered little pocket for some smaller stuff. The backside is something called a rugged logo print and it's there for durability and grip when sitting down can't wait to check them out when we get the pairing the shot who knows. Maybe an upgrade is in the works. Now here's something that hits home for me. One of the newest mission blue hope spots is all wallo reef on maui. Now for many years we would make the journey out to maui and right before we get to kana polly beach. We'd pass through and beautiful trees lining highway now. As a reminder mission blue is sylvia earle's organization for protecting the oceans through hope spots hope spots are special places that are scientifically identified as critical to the health of the ocean. So why allah wallo well. It's a special place for hawaiians. It's known as poo new were sanctuary. Unfortunately the sanctuary nearly lost fifty percent of the reef through a bleaching in two thousand and fifteen now this hope spot is being led by By dr mark decoys executive director and chief scientists of the hawaiian association for marine education research. I love diving. Wallow especially the turn turtle cleaning stations where large numbers of green sea turtles come in and get their shelves clean. Let's hope this hope spot is successful. We just finished up an awesome patty dive master class and we are very proud of our new divemasters. It is certainly a rewarding program. Now there is something new from patty to help people understand. Just what a dive master is and what they do. It's the patti introduction to dive master now. This program is a new electronic learning project that can be accessed through the patty learning portal. And best of all it's free. You get an intro ecorse overview an intro to your role as a patty dive master and there are example case studies. You also get a little bit of a intro into how to demonstrate skills and more. the program. Also outlines the specialties that patty dive master can conduct this new intro to patty dive master. Initiative is a great way to embark on your professional journey dima or the dive equipment and marketing association recently published a news update reiterating that the mask mandate on dive. Boats in the united states remains in effect. Now this mask mandate was put in place on january twenty first two thousand and twenty one by president biden executive order. One three nine nine eight. Well it certainly made sense. Back then. To require masks on aircraft in airports on trains buses and public maritime vessels. But wait a minute. What about now with over fifty percent of the us fully vaccinated. I wonder when this executive order will be rescinded. There isn't any expiration date on it. Hopefully it'll be soon. I really didn't enjoy being masked all day when we were in the airport or on the planes when we went to the bahamas and is certainly uncomfortable on a diet. Bull fingers cross. That logic will win over politics..

"To deal with one of the factors driving these zone. Arctic diseases that are responsible for this pandemic and which are putting us at great risk for future pandemics very serious diseases. It's it's that we are encouraging organisms to jump from animals to people because of climate change deforestation the our methods of agriculture. And you look at the ones. What are we to do something about one of them. Very concretely is to reduce our dependence on animals for food. F there was just less of that that would put us ahead of the game one hundred percent in the way that we need to appreciate the human body and its ability to heal and self regulate we need. We need to own that perspective with respect to the planet right. Sure and if we're if we're you know clearing rainforests and and you know creating algal blooms and our waterways were devastating ecosystems. And we're creating less and less areas for these species to exist in the manner in which you know they're meant to exist and so they end up encroaching on other areas and these species are coming into contact perhaps wouldn't otherwise and all of this creates this toxic situation that leads to zoonotic diseases and the decay of the planet and very simple practical and effective thing that we can all do as individuals reduced that that meat intake. You still the fish though. I still like fish. You know i'll tell you. The eating. i became a lack of vegetarian. Thousand nine hundred seventy. And i was eight that way for about fifteen years and then i was going to. Japan frequently is very difficult to go to japan and not eat fish because fisher in everything And then i was reading about health benefits official. I started eating fish and You know since. Then i've been a pesco going to japan right. Now that's correct. Come on i still. Sylvia earle was all over your range all over me. She begged me not to tell people. Eat fish did you. Did you watch Spiracy shore a netflix. Yeah yeah she's great in that movie. She's great neil. It's a big problem where there aren't going to be fish in the ocean. Yeah from the way that we've of them. I'm gonna i'm gonna i'm gonna convert you back to work by how do you. How do you feel about lab. Grown meat or lab grown. I think it's interesting. E you know it's it's I mean look. We can have a discussion on the margins about the health implications of that. But i think we need to focus on the elephant in the room which is the extent to which our dependence on industrialized animal. Agriculture is wreaking havoc on the planet. We are a meet obsessed world and that has to change if you want to preserve our ecosystems. This is one tool in a tool kit for accomplishing that. Yep i agree. And i would say probably i would tell people in this country that the place to start is with beef. Because i think that's one that has the worst consequences yeah You know it. Also there's also issues of antibiotic resistance and there's there's it's it's toxic stew of so many through problems that we could redress if we reduce that dependency on it so whether you go one hundred percent plant based or ninety percent plant based or you start you know just making some simple changes in your diet on daily basis like these. These things are important to do and to take seriously. I think so. You still like a little cheese though theft right. You know what. I did i My wife Is a plant based cheese. Wizard started this company called sri mo. She's really like come up with the next evolution of cheese. I brought you some. Sam try after various. Yeah i'm also very interested. In new micro protein foods that are being developed from Cova cultivating fungi and mushrooms right. There's this weird intersection of of of the science. Catching up with like sort of heart. Science catching up with food scientists to create Interesting products out of everything from algae shrooms. And all this kind of thing or your kids vegan. They are but they're you know they're now at the age where they are. They need to have their own exploration. Yeah you know so. We give them a widely. I mean they. They stray from the hardcore vegan path. But but they've never had me so they'll have you know they'll like you know my teenage daughter. She wants to have a burger. Roy stuff like that. Well no she wants to have some junk food. It's okay it's like. I'm less interested in that than i am in. You know where her or all of my kids diet is going to be five ten years ago now and we've tried to instill in them. You know a certain level of education so it's less about like the day to day and more about like in general of where they fall but it's tricky with all the food right. You know you know you've been doing this for a long time trying to get people to change their habits. Yeah i mean come on right. Is there anything harder than that right. How do you approach that. When i usually tell people not to try to do make global change but the do it in small pieces Start by mean the most important thing is to start buying not eating refined processed and manufacture food. You know that's that's the i mean. Step.

"This is wet notes on scuba shaq radio for sunday february twenty eighth two thousand and twenty one. Well i up today. I'm going to do an update on dry suit talq now ever since i've owned a dry suit i've been using those little pouches of talk to dust my wrist seals and neck seals. And that makes it easier to put on especially if it gets a little humid. Well we used to get these little pouches from magnet who then became gear aid when we could no longer get them from juried. We switched to getting them from diving unlimited international or dui. Recently we ran low on these talca pouches. Wanted to order some more. But do you. I stopped producing those talk pouches. I guess i'm guessing near some concern around. The safety of talk i noticed has been in news over recent years. So donna reached out to peak from dui and he suggested cornstarch to dust are seals. Make sure you do it every time now. That sounds a little strange to me. But it looks like people are using it in place of the talq. We'll give it a try. And i'll let you know how goes cornstarch. It's not just for cooking next up. Is things start opening up and we travel outside the country. We're going to need to get tested for in nineteen before we can come back well. Resorts are out there. And they're starting to accommodate their customers and making it easier to get tested. So for example. I just saw where enroll roett to resorts. The turquoise bay dive resort and the mayan princess beach dive resort are offering onsite cova testing on thursdays and fridays. And then what happens. Is you'll get electronic. Results are available in three hours. And then you'll have a hard copy the next day now you still have to pay for it in a costs about fifty bucks. Then i also check the cocoa view site down there and roett tan and it looks like they are also offering onsite testing but their prices coming in at eighty five dollars so it looks like if you're going to travel to row attend you'll find it easier to get tested for corona virus and get back home as long as you test negative but i think more and more of these dive operators out there are going to provide that cova testing or options for people so that you can go travel and then make it easier for you to get back home. Also last i think a couple of weeks ago. The president of the united states signed executive order. One three nine eight and with that executive order it mandated. That masks are to be worn on all public maritime vessels including ferries. What does that mean for dive boats. Well deana did. Some research and found out that this mandate includes commercial vessels used for dive charters and dive related activities. You'll need to be masked up upon boarding disembarking and the duration of travel. Obviously this can only apply to us. Operators i think this makes sense and i'm sure common sense will prevail given our unique circumstances when we go diving way back in the beginning of two thousand twenty i did a segment on dive travel insurance then in mid two thousand and twenty. I noticed the divers alert network. Dan their travel insurance was not available on their website is back now. You can read through. Essentially they cover prepaid travel arrangements. If you your host at your destination you traveling companion or family member test positive for covid. The good news however is that the dan travel insurance is back and it looks like they are helping to try and address the corona virus issues. The other day that there's been a an oil spill off the coast of israel and lebanon and it's impacting over one hundred miles of coastline. Now what's a little disconcerting about this is that they don't know where this is coming from this washing up on the beaches. It's the seems like there's some sort of gag order on the release of information. I'm just not sure why there was. Also a thin whale washed up on the beach apparently with oil in its loans. They say this is undoing. Much of the progress made over the last thirty years. Let's hope they figure out where this is coming from or where it came from. And if they're able to minimize the impacts and finally here's some really big news in the scuba industry especially related to scuba tanks. Luxembourg is getting out of the aluminum tank business on february twenty third. Luxor held their fourth quarter and full year. Two thousand and twenty analysts call and that's where they announced their divestiture of their aluminum product lines now. The rationale according to their press release is that they wanted to focus on high performance magnesium alloys zirconium catalysts and high pressure composite cylinders. Guess to profit margin. World are ocean conservation over the past couple of weeks and maybe pass on a little bit of tidbits without going into a great deal of detail. I will continue to do more detailed segments on various ocean health and sustainability topics along with some history in travel and of course sea hunt.
