"Blah, blah, blah. I was like, okay, well, I'm gonna do that for watching his date. This is great. And because Stewart and then when van pelt started hosting SportsCenter, he did the same thing for Maryland. Then it was okay, but those guys, because they just thought it was so absurd in their head. They're like, no. I mean, even when Twitter first launched and like, what was that O 6? ESPN was hesitant to put our Twitter handles. I mean, it sounds silly now, but when it first started, they were hesitant to put our Twitter handles on the graphic with our name. And then it became a requirement. And then some guys went against the grain, right? Like, my friend Neil Everett and John Anderson, and they're like, well, no, I'm not doing this Twitter. Ah, that's just extra work that I'm not going to get paid for. This day they don't pay attention to Twitter, which is hilarious, but yeah, so it was interesting in the culture that it was, yeah, you had to be a diehard sports fan. And we all loved it because of that. It's so refreshing just to hear your stories because you've been a part of this industry for so long and you've seen it change. But one of the elements that we've definitely seen change is just women calling more games. How important is it that women call more games and that they're calling games at all levels and regardless of sport? I think it's incredible. And honestly, if I'm being completely honest, I never thought I would see the day that not wanting two women are NBA team broadcasters. I just didn't think that that was possible. And now we have, you know, Hannah storm is calling annual games on Amazon Prime. I didn't think that would happen. I always sat there, had to be some sort of tie between playing the sport. So I thought football was out. I thought basketball was out unless it was WNBA. Unless you were an analyst because we'd seen some analysts get into that MBA space. So I'm glad that my gut was wrong and that my perception of how bosses could look at things, but I tell you what, if we hadn't witnessed the year of our lord 2020, I don't know that we would see Kate Scott with 76ers, or at least a buying, and with the bucks. That was so transformational when we're all at home, on lockdown, right? And we're watching George Floyd get murdered on TV. Everybody has to deal with that. Because we don't have any other choice. And I think because of that seismic event regarding racial and social justice, it made the bosses that had normally made the decision to go with the white guy again and again and again to say, you know what? You can't do it that way anymore. We have got to pivot off of this. It was George Floyd and it was also Maria Taylor's with ESPN that I think created a watershed moment for that company in particular because they were very contractual when Rachel Nichols said she had a contract to do a certain job. She's not kidding. That's exactly how they would spell it out in their employee deals. And so I see Rachel's side of it completely. But I also get where Maria was coming from. It doesn't let the cream rise to the top, right? If you are the best person for the job, it shouldn't matter what the contract says. And how that whole mess was handled was ridiculous. I'm sure Maria is happy about it now. Cashing those checks in PC. And again, she's using that as an opportunity to create space for somebody else, right? Yeah. I first met Maria Taylor at national black journalists association conference. And we literally had been given marching orders from ESPN at that NABJ to find the next Aaron Andrews, but she's got to be black. I'm like, okay. So I'm in this mixer, and I see Maria across the room because she's very tall. She's like 16. And I go over to her and I talk to her for a couple minutes. And I was like, okay, well, mission accomplished, I found it. My guy, Al jaffee at the time, and I was like, Al, you need to talk to that young woman who attends the university of Georgia in the corner. She's the next one. And my finder's fee is this percentage. Exactly. Right. I did, I did. Ron's bold on rude's edition. Robinson's edition. I know talent. I should have been a talent agent, actually, now that I think about it, I did it all wrong. But you can just see and what they have and what they bring to the table and how they comport themselves. And they're passion and how they relay that to you. It was very identifiable. What stunned me is that Maria didn't get more opportunity right away. But that was part of the machine at the time. It just, it didn't foster growth, like it does now. I see so many different faces, especially women of color, getting opportunity to do things at ESPN. And that just was not the case when I was there. It was me and one other person. Yeah, I mean, I remember starting that book, those guys have all the fun about and for some reason I got busier, but after this conversation, I want to go finish the book. I mean, it's such a fascinating time period. And granted, hats off. For going through the struggles that are essentially paving the way for so many different women and people of different nationalities to come through and have an opportunity. And that's probably what they, everybody wants. This is an opportunity. This talent's there. Yeah. Yeah. I never had to wait for the ladies room. I tell you that. Linda. Joke about that all the time. You don't have to wait in line. You can have the whole space to yourself. Do you want to get back to some WNBA preview? I mean, I could definitely ask you a million questions about your past all the time, but so thank you about that, but this coming season, we obviously have our super teams, but outside of the mercury just from what you know, what you've heard, who are some teams that you're just super excited to watch play, and it could be because of roster changes or because they were building something great last year. Not just one, two. On the Washington mystics. Healthy. And I tell you what, cash cloud, you think she was impressive last summer? She's gonna destroy that assist record. And she done it threes. Those guys are scary. And then Atlanta because the GM who put together primarily the roster that we see minus Candace Parker with the aces. Is running the show in Atlanta, and he is drafting well and he is signing well, and Les cha gray dominated athletes unlimited pro women who season two. She must have finished in the top four on the final day of the season because she stuffs stats. And she is one of the first women that I have seen that can do a chase down defensive block from the behind deal like LeBron James says, right? Leash flies down the floor and somehow gets it clean, doesn't get called for the foul so athletic. I asked Cheryl swoopes, who reminded her most of her in season two. She said leash. And she's just scratching the surface of how good she's going to be. So I think if she. Destroy the competition opposite her and I think if they can get those new pieces to mesh with the old pieces, I love what Erie McDonald was doing in her season. She's ready to make some a I've really like Atlanta. So those two teams in particular have my intense attention. I love those two teams. Or different reasons are different players. Washington mystics, you know, they talk about their defense all the time, right? In media day, we stream different posts, they're talking about defense. They added Britney Sykes to their defensive catalog. Someone that is going for an all defensive award every single year. Playing with your living with her and Syracuse, she cares about defense. And so I love that she's just going to embody that. And really take, I think, the mystics up another level.

"Thanks for having me. So cool to be a part of your awesome show. Oh, you know, we have some fun. And I think we have some, it's great when we have two people who call games or do color and I'm just amazed by the similarities in your experiences and like you talking before the show about getting reps. It's like, I've heard I used to talk about that all the time. Yeah. It matters. For me, every rep is a step. So every time I get an opportunity to call a game, I know I'm getting better. And I can tell you going into this second season with the Phoenix mercury, I am a thousand times better than I was. Game one last year, because I've had so many games in between, in addition to that full first WNBA season. Did doing athletes unlimited help as far as just kind of a 100%. It got me into the pro women's basketball space, right? I'm knocking on the door forever. I've lived out in Phoenix, Arizona, galley, since 2013. Amber Cox, the former COO of the team, gave me a couple of nipples, and then of course she moved on to do a zillion other things. And now she's back running the Dallas wings. But so yeah, it was hard. I mean, there were so few opportunities here in the valley. There were so many people who want to do them. They're lined up like planes on a runway. It's ridiculous. To just continue to beat that drum and fight that fight was a lot, but athletes unlimited gave me an opportunity and I'm so grateful for it. They paired me with the Hall of Famer Cheryl swoopes so incomparable, so knowledgeable. And so we just had fun. And we heard that. And they heard it sounding like we were just sitting on the couch with a red cell minus the swear words talking to who? And then Phoenix decided, you know what? We went in on that too. So yeah, I owe everything to AU pro hoops. Oh. I love that, Cindy. I love that you first start off just talking about growth. You know, just where you are in your career, where you've been in your career. It just says a lot. That's still at this point in your career, you're still looking to grow, especially in the women's basketball space and calling games. In this last year that you've been in the W athletes unlimited, where do you see the most growth that you've had personally and professionally working with the W and then some of those athletes and AU? Just that close connectivity with the players and their stories, right? It's one thing to watch at home from your couch and there's another thing about being in the arena and having the access to the athletes and the coaches. The facilitators and athletes unlimited. And everybody that has a hand and growing the game, when you can have those one on one conversations, it just enhances your ability to do your job. And then the reps themselves. Just looking at the docket, we've got a 40 game season this season in the WNBA. And I can go, all right. I know national TV is going to take a few of those away. The ion road games will go away as well. But still, I'm going to end up doing more games in total than I did a season ago. So that means I'm going to be that much better at the end of this season. When there were fury, make the playoffs for an 11th straight time. Just putting that out there. Yeah, I mean, I know I talked to you about odds before because you got on to me for not betting Washington state during the back 12 tournament. Hello. Cut down the net. Right? But yeah, I mean, I was like, there's no way Phoenix does not not make the playoffs, you know? It just happens. BG's never missed. And I guess what Diana's maybe mister once. I don't know how Diana's been a league forever. She was there before playoffs started. So I did bring it, am I saying it right? I mean, I'm from Texas and now I live in the east coast. I don't know too much about the West Coast life, but wazoo. Washington state. I read a story that you actually bought a car because of the color. And it made you think of Washington state. Is that real? That is real. When I was at ESPN, I needed a snow car, right? Connecticut, feet of snow during the wintertime. And this is before we had carvana or anything. None of that. You just literally would go to the dealership and pick out a car. And I had no idea about snow cars. I kind of had a vibe as to, all right, I mean, it's got to be bigger and heavier or whatever. So I pull into the little Nissan lot, and I see a murano, bigger car, and it's crimson. I didn't even take it for a test drive. I said that one. That's what I want. So yes, that is true. I love that vibe. I just want to be that sure about every decision I make. I love that car. I'm not a car guy. I would much rather see my money hanging in my closet. Handbags, whatever. So yeah, absolutely. How about that? Every decade or so. Yeah, that's the only joy about living in New York. You don't need one. There you go. Yeah, yeah. But the ties to the West Coast, do you ever see yourself, I mean, I guess Arizona consider West Coast. It's on its own time zone. Yes. It's on to someone time zone. Half the year, we're Pacific, and the other half were mountain time zone. But yeah, I think just both big Arizona school as being in the PAC 12. I think it's just all considered West Coast. It's very chill. You rarely see a businessman wearing a suit. I mean, it's very relaxed. Yeah, then I have bachelor party time or two in Scottsdale. I bet you have. And I think there's a reason why James Harden still has his home in Tempe. Oh, 1000%. Facility at ASU has his face all over. Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I will say calling a game out there last year working for the Connecticut sun. Phoenix is one of my favorite places to go. And just the 40 hour I felt like gaff that we were there. The exploring the actual city, like the nightlife, was really cool. But also just the Phoenix mercury and event presentation. Just the game and how it makes you feel like that atmosphere. I loved it. I had felt like, okay, obviously I've been to a number of W games 'cause I'm sitting here calling games about this season. But this made me feel almost like, I wish I was a fan right now. I wish I was a game, like getting the t-shirts, like yelling out different things, like what do you like most about, just the mercury and the atmosphere that they provide for you guys? Especially at home.

Unless you want its first basketball title school in school history overcoming Caitlin Clark in Iowa, one O two 85 yesterday afternoon in Dallas, the LSU winning the national championship game. James carville went to LSU. Is that correct? Am I right on that? Probably. Yeah, I think so. The victory made Kim moque. She's the one who addresses like Liberace. The first women's coach to win national championships at two different schools. She won three at Baylor before leaving for LSU two years ago. Her four titles gave her the third most behind a Geno REM 11, of course he's at that one school. I forget. Pat summitt at Yukon. Pat summit in Tennessee. Malki has never lost in a championship game. And that's what happened here. When you think about LSU or South Carolina, all year long, ESPN was talking about Caitlyn Clark. We're being viewed as bouncers at a bar or whatever the descriptions were. So I understand the animosity here. And yes, does race play a role in this? It does. Certainly on social media. But for me, angel Reese is a great player. Although she didn't have a great game, her stats may look that way, she won because of her teammates. And that surprised me a little bit that she was that kind of in your face after the moment there. But this has been building up for a couple of years. And part of that is due to LSU's defense. But to make this about angel Reese, not what I spend the moments after winning a national title, pointing toward my ring finger to Caitlin Clark. Almost stalking her to say, hey, come on, I want you to react to this. Caitlin Clark never said anything about it. Even afterwards. He's like, hey, they were very, very tough. I'm sure she's going to be bothered by this. But she talks, she talks junk on the floor all the time. And banks gestures. And for people to just show up and say, oh my God, did you see what she did? Yeah. I mean, she was in her, she was in her bag as she said, hey, I'm in my moment here and I did that. They were upset because Caitlyn Clark did that to a South Carolina player. Can't come out because of the NFL's rules has to go back to Alabama. I think next year but Just they don't They don't skip a beat. There's no, there's not even any learning curve when you only bring back three starters. And you've had your wide receivers your quarterback and you're running back all get picked in the first round. There's not even like a series or two where Alabama needs to figure it out. They just hit the ground running against the team that came into the season ranked 14th. All right. I'm here until 10 A.m. Are you going to stop it there? Have you reached your quote of the day or you think you're going to keep it going? I gotta plow through till noon Eastern, so I wouldn't keep it going. Yeah, I got the courage filled, and I'm just gonna keep what What is the Eric Herskowitz broadcast studio situation like It is not fancy. It is just normal room with a one of those blue yeti mix and the computer and that's it. And I'm in my pajamas and I have no shame in my game right now. Nice. Alright, Erica. Thank you. Alright, so, yes. Yep. She'll be back. At the bottom of next hour. Yeah, I did the same thing as far as the roll out of bed situation today. Wife alarm set for early cause She's flying out to Vegas. And Was like What? What am I going to do here? Shower? Super early? Do I do that to try to wake myself up? Or do I just try to maximize sleep after staying up till 11 30 Eastern last night watching that game Brian Kelly is getting Brian Kelly had to put out Notre Dame football had to put an apology for something from last night's game that I want to touch on. Just I heard it. I saw it live. And we've gotten to a point where I where I just knew it. I said, Watch this blow up. Watch this turn into something. Watch this become one of these faux controversies. And that's exactly what happened. I do want America's take on Notre Dame football. They survived Florida State. They almost blow at 18 point lead in the fourth quarter. They win. But there are a lot of signs of Flaws and weaknesses. They don't look like a complete team. They definitely don't look like a top 10 team. And so if you want to defend Notre Dame's on verifying if you want to blast them as an overrated, uh, much ado about nothing. "Curry's the Kawai by new Balance many varieties of Jordan's, though it's been a long time since MJ dunked in an NBA game. What you will not find is a single shoe named for a current WN BA player, though that is about to change. Briana Stewart, Power forward for the Seattle Storm today announced a deal with Puma that includes her own signature sneaker here to talk about what that means is Nick to Paula. He covers the footwear industry for ESPN. He also host the new board room show the Sneaker game, High Neck. Hey there. How's it going pretty well. So how big a deal is this deal? This is about more than just to show this is much more than a shoe. It's It's a monumental day for the basketball world for women's basketball and for the athletics industry as a whole, and I think Even larger for women's endorsement deals. In particular, It's been a full decade since the last women signature shoe. There's currently 18 NBA players that have their own signature shoe. And and no woman and Soto have WNBA player like Briana Stewart. That's gonna be launching the first singer to shoot a decade. It's a huge day for the industry. And why has it been more than a decade? And I guess we should go back farther than that the very first women's basketball player to get her own shoe. Was Cheryl Swoopes. This was back in 1995. What happened? Why? Why did it seem to fall off a cliff? Yes. Oh, Cheryl Back in 95. That was the really the starting point of the WN BA, which launched tonight's 97 7 of the first nine women signature shoes were within the first five years of the WN Ba and then I think what happened was brands were looking at. You know, it's kind of slowing sales and just turned Turned away from it all together, and it's It's been unfortunate because I think there's now a whole generation of young girls that grew up playing the game that didn't aspire to have a signature shoe. Yes, they could aspire to play in the WNBA, but it wasn't something. They had visibility to I mean, that's what the men have always had on their side. And so I think there's been so many different, You know men of different positions different men of different different start levels on now to see a brand like Puma, take a chance on Briana Stewart and really step up with a massive deal for her to get her own signature shoe. It's long overdue and you touched on this, But let me dig deeper. I'm thinking about the gender pay gap between male and female athletes, which, of course Transcends basketball. But I'm wondering if there's an endorsement pay gap. How bigger these deals the WN BA deals compared to the N ba. Yeah, there is the bit of a gap. I think it is a little tough because you know the MBA seasons 82 games, WNBA's 32. But even within that, The household names. Let's say the top 10 NBA players where they're making anywhere from 8 to $15 million a year. And I think from W NBA standpoint, you're looking at a six figure to a mid six figure deal per year s o it, Zafar, you know, far off gap there. Even the NBA players. That's the biggest thing of a signature shoe deal is you have a 5% world? He as well, eh? So you're making even more money off the off the sales of every foot where item every every apparel piece. S O. If if Briana Stewart can lead the way here and you know, I spoke with her on Monday, and she she's hoping this. This has a bit of a domino effect and that Morse again shoes come as well. So she wants competition. That's interesting, she said. I hope this becomes a competitive thing and turns into a dominant effect, which was, you know word for word and There is definitely a competition. There were so many players hoping to be the next and the 10th person to get a signature shoe. And so for Stewie, that's definitely a point of pride that that she could say she was the 10th one in the 25 year history. Stuart, This is Briana starts nickname. That is her nickname. And I could see that being the name of the shoe they could be. They could be called. The stoolie ones will have to wait and see. I love it. ESPN Snick dipaula. He cover sneakers and basketball for ESPN. Thanks, Nick. Thanks for having me. A generation of kids grew up playing an early educational video game called the Oregon Trail. It's about pioneers on the trail West, and they remember it mostly for the moment their party died of dysentery. Well, now a new spin on the wagon train game focuses on more accurately representing native Americans. They meet along the way. And it includes playable native characters. The Northwest News Networks and a king has more. Jazz half moon Now 38 remembers playing Oregon Trail as a reward for doing well in class. And that was on the old super Old computer. The green. Scream that was like the only color half moon grew up on the Confederated tribes of the human till a reservation in northeast organ. Remember being like, Oh, like the Indians. Killed off. You know somebody in your wagon train, you know, and it's like, Well, we're Indians, you know, Like the company game loft tackled the redesign of Oregon trail, its target audience, the now 40 year olds and their kids. And more Native American players. Lead designer Jared Trojan had to root out historical inaccuracies in cliches about Native American culture. Well as a what Middle class Australian. I don't think I can really speak to that. So he brought in some indigenous historians. They listen to early test music for the game and said Back off the drums and flutes and don't use broken, stilted English trudge in got it. It's like a truck to try and make Native American people seem primitive when actually there's a lot of bilingual or Polly Lingle native Americans that at that time, the team of historians came up with Maura appropriate character names and advocated for new roles for Native Americans, not just guides or trappers. University of Nebraska historian Margaret Hittle. Has LaCouture, a tribal ancestors. She researched old photos and drawings for accurate depictions of different tribes, clothing and style. Initially, all of the native people had braids. And I think we suggested maybe they don't all have to have braids. One major teaching moment for Trojan bows and arrows. He definitely wanted them. Little explained that if you were a native American trapper at the time, you are more likely to have a rifle, so bows and arrows are an outdated stereotype. David Lewis teaches anthropology and ethnic studies at Oregon State University. And he's a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ron Territories, where many settlers ended up. They were excited initially. For all the new products, the guns and the medals and the fabrics and things like that. But the real Oregon Trail wasn't a positive story. For Native Americans, the settlers kept coming by and large, the experience of native people was Was one of continual loss for really the first 70 or 80 years. It's hard to put all that into a video game. But historian Margaret Hittle says the designers were serious about getting it right. It was clear that they were listening to us and taking what we had to say seriously..

"I had a really really good time interviewing Kevin Jones displaced music and let's get right to that interview. Here we go home office rather talk money was not an issue, but guys like a sauna. All right, welcome to terrific talk. I've got a great guest for you today. Kevin Jones is the founder and CEO of blue wire, which is a widely successful Sports podcast company bulb wire host over a hundred forty different podcast with over twenty million downloads last year athletes like Megan Rapinoe Baron Davis Greg Olsen Evander Kane, they all have podcasts on the platform and it's an amazing thing that Kevin is built here and truly truly. It is inspiring. We're all kind of searching to make it in the business and Kevin was working really hard bouncing around as a beat reporter trying to make it home. Journalism, and he was like, what's my opportunity here? Where where do I have to grow? And you know, he had a lot of guts and he started his own thing and believed in himself and the idea and it's awesome Thursday the success he's having now and for all that hard work and belief to pay off. So Kevin, welcome to terrific talk man. Congratulations on your success. Oh man. Yeah, I'll send you the check in the mail for the intro there. And that was a pastic. I appreciate it. I'm happy to be kind of this inspirational figure was never my plan. But I definitely have been through quite a journey to get to today founding blue wire and and kind of feeling this company with 25 full-timers now. Yeah. It it less than three years ago August of 2018. So, um, yeah man happy to unpack everything your your listeners are awesome. I love the content you're creating. Thank you means a lot. So I always kind of find the names of companies interesting. I don't I don't think the name, you know, really matters a whole lot and it's more about you know, whatever the competition. Producing and making that people really care about but but how did you come up with the name blue wire? I get my mom credit. I never give her credit for anything. So mommy, you get the credit of wage, you know, it was between blue wire and swoop. I don't think I've ever told this on a podcast before I actually like soup more it didn't sound good. But that was the intention was we were going to come in and swollen listeners from radio from Barstool from ring or from other places, but blue wire. It has evolved economy. No plug influencer is now plugged themselves into the audience instead of being broadcasted out to the world and so blue wires are plugged for creators. We're plug from Megan Rapinoe and her faith and we're plugged for Pepsi to reach young sports fans. So I haven't leaned into the name too much. I it's kind of fun to say blue wire. That's how we landed on it off. Our website blue wire pods right now, you know looking at rebranding potentially but blue wire will be the name and we you know, we were founded as a podcast company or growing quickly to be more than that. So blue wire and smooth but the the two liter yes woop swoop like Sheryl Swoopes. I got my mom and I think Iraq to a few podcasters who I was recruiting at first and they all Like Glue wire. Well, it's a good it's a good choice. I like blue wire before we get into blue wire and all the success that you have in there now. I wanted to talk to you a little bit about how may got there and some of the challenges you faced along the way though you graduated from East Carolina University and twenty eleven ten years ago. Now almost and you want to work in broadcasting obviously Sports kind of tell us about your journey and someone stops along the way there. Oh, man. What a journey. It's been yeah, I think is how I got in the door, which is crazy local TV is almost in dog. Awful shape but I see RG3 was a rookie Bryce Harper was a rookie. I was a rookie in D C. So I started blogging about these guys tweeting about these guys from my coverage was focused thoughts on those two instead of the teams and my Twitter started taking off a little bit. I actually got fired from that job. I drank Margaritas on the job. I took it for granted. I thought I was hot chick cuz I had 2,000 or 3,000 Twitter followers. So it was a humbling Learning lesson for me. I also rigged a contest there to have one of my friends when it was like a lot of strikes where they're like, oh dude your your neural trouble your I was twenty-three. The good news is the Cleveland Browns loved what I was doing their website was run by a couple of old dudes at the time and they took a new regime coming in there. Like we need someone who's good at Twitter. We need someone talking to Young fans. I somehow clicked with them got hired to be a reporter for the Cleveland Browns, which is interesting working team side job. You don't have your full voice, but I flew on the plane with Johnny Manziel. I went to Paul Kruger's wedding. I smoked weed with Donte Whitner, you know experience. I played video games with all the players all the time. So you you when you're creating content on the team side and your you're really a marketing employee. You're not really a journalist. But yeah, it was an amazing experience a lot of backstabbing and that culture with the vice president and the company was not a place. I wanted to be long term but works, you know some of the best experiences in my life. I met Kyle Shanahan there. I met a lot of really good connections being Cleveland then I moved to San Francisco and worked for KNBR. Um, the main radio station down here. I wrote articles for the website went on video tired of small social team around me. I was first time I had my voice I was able to see whatever I wanted to about Steph Curry about Colin Kaepernick, and it was just a cool time to be in the Bay Area. Eventually making $50,000. They're banging my head against the wall. I'm twenty-eight. What am I actually doing besides getting Twitter followers making good content. I looked around. I'm never going to get a radio chair here with Gary radnich. Sixty-year-old just re-signed to a four-year contract radio was in huge trouble. Now, they realized that they developed. No young Talent right? I'm looking around Twitter page is a Warrior's podcast. There's a Raiders podcast. I can almost go make something better than KNBR right now with other creators. I don't I don't need to be here anymore. So left my contract there. I was upset at the time. I didn't know what I was doing. I I almost took a job with TMZ sports. I almost took a job with the Brooklyn Nets and almost to.

"It's so different when you were one of those local teams that You have to know your city. And when it when the wnba was telling us what to do in los angeles it was a kind of insulting truthfully and so you know again i would. I would say hey. Look that might work in in phoenix. But it's not gonna work in los angeles and what works. In los angeles might not work in phoenix. So let's let's start the wnba off so that we all have a fair shot at this so that we're all playing on equal plainfield and of course. First order of business cheryl swoopes gets pregnant and they give houston. Houston what was it. Yeah the houston comments. They gave them the first draft choice. And you know again it was like will it is was that is that fair or or not yes. It's fair because cheryl swoops pregnant. She may not ever play again. Okay but what if she does play again. Does she go back to the houston rockets houston comets or or. Does she go back into the draft. Oh no she goes back to the houston. Well that's not fair. that's not right. You know so. David stern way right vaber mr very central command control right in the nba. Right very very top down in that regard. Despite and i can see where you know. My guess is that seeing the fledgling ab l. that third competitor. That was sort of out there as well right but you know you wanna bring that sort of full force of the nba and all the owners. You're going to get the nba right. And that's that's a little different than the franchise model that you were aware of the mis or the dennis murphy vision of sports right which is the antithesis of player owner managers right where there's a centralized Kind of approach right. And that's a real chafe and frankly it once again. You are in the vanguard here because you look at today's modern day or a decade or two later the wnba and now there's a lot more of sort of these call them independent right. I think maybe half the are still related if you will to their nba siblings right. But now there's a lot of exploration and or ownership that's outside of the nba domain right. So maybe you're on to something. Yeah you know so. I mean maybe we started off on the right foot for sure. A and i was very happy about that. My dad was very pleased about that But at the same time there were few bumps in the road that that the league. The league office didn't quite understand because they had never run a franchise before very quickly. Val ackerman came in as the commissioner and again this was somebody who worked in the nba but never had had experience running a local franchise. So or managing franchise owners with their own particular market understandings. Needs right. exactly. You know so. I mean okay. Well this isn't going to be a cakewalk. But at the same time i was like oh my gosh here we go. This is going to be tough. We're gonna have some battles in front of us. But the way the league was structured was it was it was really well structured. I mean it was the right way to do something. So i couldn't complain too much although i complained all the time but that was just my way of doing things i complained about uniforms as i complained about many things but.
