"I mean, you're you're super involved now with the NBC and I love that Craig Robinson's done a phenomenal phenomenal job taking over being active. Like I feel like that organization was dormant for years and he's done a great job. And I know you you're involved in that you've been involved in some other things because otherwise your wife's going to I mean, like like there's no way if you're not doing something. What do you get going to be annoying her? Well, she know what first of all she's really busy and and everybody with with the zoom meetings and everything where you know, I mean one party email. She's another you know, we got the we have to find out what when I can walk in and out of the kitchen, you know, because she's there in that area. So we gotta get our schedules coordinated, but but you're right just you know, as far as the dog See, you know, the National Association of Basketball Coaches is our governing body, you know for all of our divisions all divisions of college basketball and we're very proud of the association and I'm I'm very proud to be on the board of directors of that. I've been on that now for for a while and and now that you mentioned Craig being on new executive director and he's doing as you said so well a tremendous job of like us and supporting us, you know, we have great leadership and you know take anything away from Jim Haney, you know, but Craig is jumping in now and Baton has been passed to him and and we're proud to be a part of it together and I want a few committees. Actually. I'm on I'm co-chair myself and Frank Martin from South Carolina. We co-chair the racial reconciliation committee, which is a very important job that was created after the George Floyd murder and I was asked to share that and I was wow, you know, it was really blown away that I was asked to do it and but we've taken initiatives, you know, we've been fighting for certain things with them. Organization to help you know us to you know, bring about change to make a difference, you know in our society and through basketball, you know, whether that's the elimination of trying to take on elimination of old SAT and ACT test standardized test, you know, we're doing things when we were heavily involved with other coaches as well with voter registration, you know, some different things that have come up, you know come down and I have been a part of you know, something as anchor coaches for another initiative. That was his his baby in his brainchild is called a John McLendon minority leadership under the name that you guys, you know know who and and Bob you probably you probably knew, you know, coach McLendon. I wish I did know I didn't yeah. Oh totally well aware of. Yes, just the legendary faith. And and so we're we're you know, we have that's a coach driven initiative. You know, we're all coaches. We have Patrick Ewing. We have Coach K. We have Dabo swinney's Nick Saban football basketball. What channel is the one he and I have kind of been the anchor coaches, but it's been he's driven. It has been his idea. And that's something that we're bringing about having minorities more minorities women and men wage being having exposure and access and opportunity on athletic campuses to become Future Leaders, you know, we've talked about how do we get more? You know black people African Americans minorities in leadership positions. Well, this is one of the ways that we can try to do that to help diversify athletic departments.

Clemson Coach Dabo Swinney Ranks Ohio State at No. 11 in Final Coaches Poll

"Davos, Sweeney can do whatever he wants with his pole. It's kind of why nobody pays attention to the coachespoll anymore. Now that we have the playoff committee rankings, we don't need it. Because when dabble places Ohio State number 11 Hello, Florida and Oklahoma and Georgia, Cincinnati and Coastal Carolina as well. It clearly was just to make a point that Ohio State did not play enough games in his mind. Not that there's 10 teams. Actually could beat the buck up the same way no power. Five coaches put Cincinnati in their top four. But seven group of five coaches did see the coaches are always acting in their own self interests. Politicking for their own schools for playoff spots, Bull Biggs and then their conferences to get more respect and when they can propping up those that help them while tearing down those that don't

How "Lil' Ol' Clemson" Overcame the Odds

"Here today to talk about Little Clemson. First of all where where did that name come from. Davos swinney has been using it basically since he took over as the head coach back in two thousand eight and I know we're not supposed to be here. We're does willow beer but we about the Tigers man. I'm so proud and just quickly remind us. How much has little clemson accomplished in the last five years? And how do those accomplishments stack up against some of the all-time great teams. This will be their fourth national championship game in the past five years and obviously they have won. Two of the past three national championships backpedaling Lawrence flips absorb open wide open just native. Where's the pen strengthens? Its the championship game really witnessing one of the all-time great runs right. After or maybe you know in conjunction with the dynasty that Alabama has had attack territory with very likely a victory formation and a fifty fifth win but this clemson senior class. The Tigers Tigers reclaimed their crowd by four Alabama. We are really truly talking about one of the great runs. We've seen in this sport and yet they seemingly get no respect at least if you listen into what Dabo Sweeney has to say we win to the team that beat South Carolina. And it's we we get clemson out. It's the dad gummed state so it's big because you know they can't vote us out. I mean we gotta we gotTA WE GOTTA go thirty. You know I mean we got no choice forced but Stewart I wanted to talk to you about some of the things Clemson has had to overcome to get where they are today because in some ways it makes her accomplishments even more remarkable. So let's start with the schools location. This is a school that is in the tiniest towns announced in college football. The main drag is a half mile if that they have one of everything and only one of everything one starbucks Fox Walmart. You've got this eighty thousand seat stadium hundred fifty thousand people rolling into the town on the weekends. it's incredible bull and but then they all leave. You know Monday through Friday. We kind of have our own world and it's named Clemson. It's not named university. University of their state and Frankly University of South Carolina has a much bigger fan base in that state. CLEMSON's not even the biggest Followed team in their own state. And I imagine it's harder to build that fan support when you don't have the state name in your school's name 'cause fans can identify so strongly with the state there from. Yeah I mean obviously the one big exception in College Football History Notre Dame that has a true national following but that goes all the way back to the nineteen twenties and and new rockne is taking them on the train and playing games all around the country. It's truly unique when you think about the kinds of programs that we're used to seeing at the top of the polls the Alabama is the Ohio states. It's the US's these are schools with big huge national fan. Bases Clemson truly is still even with all the success mostly a regional school well and a lot of people might not realize this but clemson has had to recruit locally for the most part I mean. It's remarkable if you look at their roster. How many of the guys as our from North and South Carolina Georgia in Tennessee every program? You know the the core of their recruiting class is going to be in their backyard. But clemson's up until recently. He was almost entirely from their backyard. And really that mirrors Funston as a school their alumni base something like seventy percent of the alums live in three states South Carolina North Carolina and Georgia. This is not the kind of place where anywhere in the country you go. You're going to find clumps in Bar And one other big thing. That's working against Clemson. Is They play in the ACC weaker conference where where they don't really have a rival and it's almost like people forget about clemson during the regular season because you know they don't have very many marquee games. Yeah everybody watched. Trevor Lawrence and Travis E. T. N. and and T- Higgins in last year's national championship game and saw how great they they were and then the season starts in people. Stop watching the game. They played against Texas. Ain't ammon week to was the most watched game they played this season A little over six million viewers. That was not even one of the top twenty most watch games in college football this season. And if you look at that list of the top Twenty Games Ohio Hi oh state was in five of them. LSU was in four of them Michigan. who wasn't even all that good was in three of them? When talks about lack of respect the thing that bothered him most is this year? was that none of those star players Trevor Lawrence WHO everybody assumes will be the number one pick when he's coming off his junior season travis? CTN has been one of the best running backs in the country the last three years. None of those guys made the heisman ceremony. And none of those guys were even finalists for the award for the best is player at their position in. That's not because they're not great players. It's because nobody watched them this season. How has clemson been able to overcome some of these kind of systemic? Systemic challenges. The fact that they aren't this historical powerhouse. The fact that they're in this tiny town in the middle of nowhere South Carolina would have been the keys to to them building this program into what it's become. Yeah well it really all starts Dabo swinney. He is a extremely unique personality in college. Football one moment along the way that I think have stuck with everybody was Dave beat Notre Dame in practically a monsoon in twenty fifteen regular season and they interview him after the game on. ABC what nine listen. We're giving scholarships give you stipends in tails in a place to live. We're giving nice uniforms. I give you good service tonight. It was big. Well Gee Bring Your own God put some dads and to me that personifies daboh like. That's not something. Most coaches coaches would say in a post game interview and kind of set the tone I think from their Dabo. Swinney is the fun coach. He's the coach who when they built their new football facility. They put in a PUTT. PUTT course welcome to the outdoor pavilion miniature. Golf Renfro just happened to catch the game winner in the National Championship Against Alabama. We'll see what he's got here. Your place on Punsalan rest for the weary. We'll at hunter and so that became their brand there. The Fun School there the place you want to go if you WANNA play college. Football get an education education and have a lot of fun doing it and to amplify that message. Clemson was really ahead of the curve. I think With how they used social media to appeal to recruits they are constantly putting out videos And other images that show exactly that that show that take you inside side. The Locker Room and inside the facility in show you how much fun they're having Show you Dabo swinney dancing in the locker room after a win Stewart. How would you describe Devil's dance? Moves dance moves are about a clunky and awkward as you'd expect from a middle aged dude but but certainly in keeping with his his personality. There's also a video that they posted of Disney filming a football ball movie at Clemson last night. Any five thousand people here. We have to shoot three plays and the entrance from valley in a half of a half time. Half time the real players went off the field and a whole bunch of actors and Clemson. Uniforms came running onto the field and the and the the crowd cheered them on. And and you know made it seem like a real football game and the footage is going to be spectacular. It's one of the three loudest crowds in Clemson visit history. And what role has the rest of the Clinton coaching staff played in the rise of the Tigers when Dab oh I started getting a going at Clemson they weren't a national powerhouse yet. They were starting to get better. He did something that was a little unusual at the time and basically took a lower salary for himself in order for them to spend more on. assistant coaches. Because at that time. They weren't necessarily rolling in money like some of the programs that they were trying to compete against. They they were paying their coordinators top dollar money and those coordinators played a huge role. I mean they were the ones that certainly Chad. Morris was the one that recruited and coach Sammy Watkins Skins and certainly does Shawn Watson. The guys that got this run started now. They are rolling in money. An data was making nine million dollars a year. And that's you know that there's no longer a disadvantage for Clemson. But they were very smart about how they went about managing that in the early years of this run.

"The and you gotta be willing to put the work in and the one thing about football. That's never changed is it's still hard work and its commitment and sacrifice and his dedication. And it's it's stick to this. And it's team and its structure and all those things, and you know, and you have to start over you know, you have to homeboy yourself. I mean and just kinda come in with the right month that I mean, most these guys I mean, you always tell them, listen, you're better players, a senior in high school or freshmen in in high school, and you know, they all usually say obviously much in here. Why is that more experience? More knowledgeable more poise stronger smarter, all those things, and it doesn't mean you can't be a good freshman, obviously. But enjoy all the journey and just come in and put the work in, you know, everybody wants to be great. But not everybody's willing to do what it takes to be great. And and you know character is matters. You know, character matters that any anybody your talent, and your your your knowledge could get you to the top of whatever it is. "He here's PIN radio. ESPN news. I want to transition because I want to get your perspective not about these players, but about player accountability. And some of the things that young guys out there need to recognize if you're going to come and play collegiate sports you had a Dexter Lawrence. You had zag laying Brandon Galloway they got suspended because national championship game because of some failed drug tests with some muscle growth supplement, or whatever the case may be. But most of them have forget about those guys for a second. You are. A coach going into kids home talking to their parents, their family members, etc. Etc. Because of how things have changed from a societal perspective. Even from the business of the NC, double A, how individuals players programs, etc. Held accountable. What show message to kids that want to come and play collegiate sports that they really really need to know and the grasp if they're going to succeed at this level and keep their head above water is what are some of the minefields. You think they need to watch out for coach? First of all, there's no entitlement. You know, we we we live in this world now, especially with a lot of young people. They get armed with this entitlement. Whether comes from, you know, outside people in their life, or whatever or the recruiting process. You know, listen, there's no elevator to success. You know, you gotta take the steps period. The and you gotta be willing to put the work in and the one thing about football. That's never changed is it's still hard work and its commitment and sacrifice and his dedication. And it's it's stick to this. And it's team and its structure and all those things, and you know, and you have to start over you know, you have to homeboy yourself. I mean and just kinda come in with the right months that I mean, most of these guys I mean, you always tell them, listen, you're a better players a senior in high school or freshmen in in high school, and you know, they all usually say obviously much in here. You know, character matters that anybody your talent, and your your your knowledge could get you to the top of whatever it is. Whether you're a great radio host TV host like yourself or football coach or a football player. But only your character is gonna keep you there. "Nick save. In this phenomenon is one of the all time greats in some people's is the all time great, we get that. And there's nothing to dismiss or poo about the Alabama crimson tide. But when you look at clemson's program, I think the biggest thing is that a guy like Justin Ross left Alabama to comment play for your program. What do you think that says not just about you? But what's going on at Clemson? Because you've got a lot of kids out there that are looking at Clemson differently. Yeah. No doubt. I mean, we think we guys this this year this classroom. I think fourteen different states. So I mean, we've we've gone to Pennsylvania and got the top player in the state. We got the top receiver out of California this year Josephine God of the top receiver out of Florida. Frank lanston. I mean, we'd gone all over and but getting Justin Ross last year was was huge for us. I mean Trevor Lawrence last year out of Georgia number one player in the country. So, you know, we we we. Recruit guys that we think, you know, fit our culture, and and we're transparent because I won't go to know what they're getting into when they come in here. What the expect -tations on? It's just really cool to see young people that are just great great football players and how they recruit and all that. But yet they still they they walk family. They won't disciplined they won't structure, they want accountability. And and you know, that's not that doesn't mean that that's not a lot of other schools have the same things. But it's just really cool that our brand has grown to that point. And guys know what we're all about. And you know, for young man like him to to want to come and be a part of it. But he knows that we're explosive on offense. He knew that he would be able to come in here. And I have a chance to to grow and mature with Trevor lords along the way, and he came in here and got behind T Higgins, you know, he had he's the second freshman I've had to have a thousand yards the Sammy Watkins, and and he was a backup. You know? He backed up t- Higgins most of the year and. And then as the year went on we kinda had different packages where we got them both on the field at the same time. But he's an amazing talent. Those catches that you saw the night. You know, that's like just, you know, another day at practice for what we see around here. And he's a great kid with a tremendous work ethic. So much fun to coach. And man is they're going to be fun to to work with that guy for a couple more years does a couple more questions for the great one dabbles. We need a coach at a rainy defending national champion. Clemson Tigers right here with Steven. He has PIN radio ESPN news. "But if the whole way I was gonna ask you about that in terms of your conference, or what have you because every time somebody's talking about football. Obviously in almost stops and starts with the SEC. Now, obviously you played in Alabama for the national championship. You played Texas A&_M second game of the season. And that was a hell of a game that ended up winning twenty eight to twenty six. So when when you talk about your conference and conference in the lack of respect per se is it that everything goes to the SEC and everyone else's suffering from receiving lack of respect or do you think specifically more attention needs to be given to the ACC is which one is? I think it's definitely more tension giving the ACC this league is is is very very challenging. I mean again we had eleven bowl teams this year. I think we had ten last year Levin. A year before that I think no no leagues had more bowl teams over the last three years. It's just very competitive. You know, I mean, anybody can can can beat anybody in my opinion. And you gotta come to play every week. We have a bunch of great coaches in this league. And and that's he sees a greatly to there's no doubt about it. I mean, you can go all the way back two thousand twelve when when beat LSU, and and it's it's been a, you know, every year we get into some of these postseason games. And you know, you shake Kansas told Nick afterwards. I said I'll see you next year because they're not going away. That'd be that'd be. Right back next year for sure and and they've been unbelievable champion, but this particular team that we had here slump just so special from day one coach Dabo Swinney educate me on this. You know, as you said everybody all year long was talking about Alabama put tick Uley when it came to its quarterback tour talk of Ola and everybody was talking about two or as if he were invincible what is one thing for two to ask what coach says to the players to get them ready cetera. What did the players or what were the players saying to you leading into the national championship game Monday night. Total confidence. I mean, we we felt like we had the better team. And we felt like we matched up. Great great respect for them. Unbelievable defensive personnel and offensive personnel to special. I mean, this really really special. But, but we we felt like we could we were athletic in our front and could could create a little a little strain, and maybe disrupt their timing a little bit. You know, we went into the game, you know, kinda won't allow to them a little bit pre snap and give give to us some different looks and hopefully force a few mistakes. And and the first big pick six there was was, you know, a great call a great well-designed coverage that with a pressure look, but we really played a cloud corner to the field. And and we were kind of fooling night there. And it was a big play for us. But our guys were confident. I mean, they they they've been that way. All. All year this team. You gotta understand the makeup of this team. Do this was a a very deep team when it comes to leadership. We're twenty six guys voted for captain, you know, that got boats for captain and thirty four guys that got votes for most inspirational player, so it was just a a unbelievable team..

"ESPN news any minute now out hopefully, have dabble Sweeney coach at or any defending champion Clemson Tigers on but until then let me say this. Car Kouzmin looked explosive last night. For the Los Angeles Lakers. He looked incredibly impressive last night for the Los Angeles Lakers. There is no doubt about that. But let me tell you something. All the glitters ain't goal. You. See? Here's the problem. You arrive in. We were raving about Brandon Ingram. We'll get into all of that. In the second. He's on the line right now. And let me tell you the laser gentlemen, if there was ever a man that could shut me up. It is this individual. He is my next guest. He is a man that for four consecutive years. I have picked against him. And obviously two times of the national championship game. I was dreadfully wrong, particularly with this one. I'm talking about the great one himself the head coach for the Clemson Tigers. The reigning defending national champion. Clemson tigers. Davos Sweeney is on the line with me right now. Coach, how are you, sir? Congratulations. Oh, good. Happy new year. Happy new year to you. I gotta admit. But it's rare the this happy to be wrong. But I gotta tell you you guys were sensational out. So you're imitating me before the game. When I pick Alabama five four three two one. But. That running on loop for like weeks around here. You're the one that created the ROY bus. You didn't even know it. I didn't know I didn't know I just taught to me coach. How did I mean when you put into perspective what happened just this Monday night? How did it go down like that? What transpired in your mom? Well, we're the best team. And I told our team. About midway in the season. I felt like we had the best team in the country. And I said we're going to have the opportunity to prove that let's just keep our head down keep grinding keep going to work. And you know, we want thirteen to fifteen games twenty points or more. And and we had just that we were the first undefeated playoff matchup with Notre Dame. And and then the first undefeated national championship match-up. And and you know, when when you beat Alabama forty four to sixteen there's really no it's so funny to hear all the people trying to make excuses and explanations, and instead of just you know, what we were the best team simple as we were the best team. I thought we were the most talented team and that game this year. And that's all that matters. And these guys proved it it was kind of a drop the mic moment for those guys. So happy for our seniors. And we it was a dominant performance. I thought we were better in the trenches with they had zero sacks. We pressured their quarterback. We we were able to get something going in the run game just enough. And then we felt like we had great matchups. Skill on skill. And we had explosive plays or quarterback played great. He played great all year. I'm not sure why everybody was so worried about him all of a sudden turned into something that he wasn't. But from matchup standpoint, we felt like it was a great match up for us, and you know, all year long. Everybody was this is the best Alabama team they've ever had. And so, you know, we were just the better team and played better made great plays one in the trenches. They had turn overs. We didn't we had Saks. They didn't we made plays. They had not very many. We were good in the red zone. They weren't. And that's really what it comes down to and games like that. But I mean, they're a great team. But we were the best team this year. And you know, you say Kansas told Nick afterwards, I said, I'll see you next year because they're not going away. That'd be that'd be.
