"Where you have a certificate that's issued by a federal agency, such as the FAA, they have zero tolerance policy. And if you're tested for these substances and you're like, well, I was only using CBD. Yes, that trace amount of THC can show up. And that can have very serious legal ramifications for you. You might lose your job. You might lose your certificates. And this article is absolutely correct. It is not something that's regulated. So up to 3% or .3% is legal, but it's not regulated. So how do you know how much you're really getting no one's actually, I don't know that any of these manufacturers have a good process for really teasing out how much THC might be their present with the CBD. Most of them probably have little to none of the THC, but you can't guarantee that you have no way of knowing. And it's in a lot of things. You have to be careful. I've seen it in beers. I've seen it in. Really? CBD. Yeah, be careful. This is your public service announcement for the day. It's in beers, it's in all kinds of creams, lotions. Is it like in that one that sweet water does that? No, no, no, no. Not that one. The one that talks about is like, it's something they talk about hemp. And other things. You have to be careful. So look at the labeling very carefully if you're not sure ask, and if they don't know, maybe pick a different beer. Would it be on the label? Sometimes it is. I've seen it on the label. Sometimes it's advertised as such. Yeah. Like a feature? Yeah. Okay. But it's, to me, it's the potential benefits of it, whatever you think you're getting out of the CBD. Probably doesn't outweigh the serious negative consequences that if you ingest a small amount of THC and it shows up on a drug test and will have consequences that are negative for your job or if you're especially if you're a federal employment or involved in anything FAA related for pilot, it's really just not worth it steer clear of it. The evidence isn't that great that it makes that big of a difference for whatever you're trying to treat with the CBD, in my opinion. Yeah. If you're retired, you never planned to fly an airplane. You just want to sit on your back porch and, you know, enjoy the sunset and evening and all of that. That's probably a different story. But if you're part of the workforce, if you're part of anything where you might be drug tested at some point for whatever reason, I would steer clear of this stuff. I was going to make another point about this to you. Oh, so the wording that they said were the drug tests can't differentiate between THC and CBD, the drug test is testing for THC, but because it contains up to .3% of the THC, that's why it's coming back positive when you think you're only taking CBD. So it's not really that it's not differentiating between the two as far as I understand. And I haul boxes is absolutely correct. Those products can show up for quite a long time. They have very long half lives in your body. They take a long time to be metabolized and fully eliminated from your body once you ingest it. So if you use a product that contains THC, you know, within a couple of days, a couple of weeks, sometimes even a month or two, it may come back as positive on your test. Be careful with this stuff. It's not worth it. The beer that I was thinking of from sweetwater. Well, it's not four 20. It's actually strange strain for 20 G 13 or something like that. See if I can share this on the video here. This year round four 20 strain G 13 IPA. And I've had this before. Yeah, it doesn't say that it actually has CBD and it says that the hops that they've chosen mimic the mimic a legendary cannabis strain. Yeah. So I don't know what that means. That is one that if I read that on the label before I consumed it, I would probably ask for something different just to be on the safe side. Yeah, I mean, I didn't even cross my mind when actually I've had it before, it's been a while. But I swear. But I didn't really like it. I didn't think it was that good. But it wasn't until the news or feedback item that I thought didn't even realize that it could be in beer. I'll readily admit that I can't wait until I either retire or go out on medical because I want to try this out and see what everybody's raving about because I've never done it in my entire life. I've never done it. Ever, period. I tell you what, everybody in my boat dock are always doing it. They're aficionados. The aficionados. And they all look at me and say, you know, you can have to give a damn right. I am not going to have it. Unless I am not the worst game. I mean, when I say long period of time, I'm out on medical with a 6 month 6 months off, or more likely when I retire, that's what I'll probably wait for. But you know, it's kind of funny I went home this summer and my brother became a doctor. In Massachusetts, you have to have your doctorate dispensary. What's this all about? It's just this thing is going absolutely crazy. But yeah, we have to be very, very careful. Be careful to who's giving you the advice because it is in I think pretty much almost every state now, if not all, you can buy these products over the counter, the drugstore, but just be aware that they're not closely regulated. They're not regulated at all by the FDA. They can legally contain up to .3% of that THC, and that's enough to show up in a drug test. And who knows what that actual percentage actually is. Well, just be careful. 5, ten PSA from the APG, lots of letters there. All right. Don't do it. Just don't do it. Just say no..

It's all like gamers dog food? Yeah. I'm gonna try a one and a half gains burger. Into the trunk, and emerge. This is exciting. The winner. And then what happens? What? The winner. That person, and that person's guest is going to win a trip to Boston for the weekend of the contract saw cop that's the weekend of what June 21 two and three something like that. "Coffee that we can brew sale. You know by the cup and also sale by the bag and so he came up with a dark roast guatemalan blend. That's personal favorite amman. And so that will be something that will keep all the time at the store to collaborate with the locals that have different products and the more we all work together and get you know customers in like you know. He can sell some of his product. They may vice versa. People hear about all of us when we all get together and to have that network and that's really important is because you can put hagan pull off my customer base. Pull off his customer base. And when you go to these markets you know collaborate with other folks on different things you know. It's the same same thing and and a lot of customers have mentioned it. I think that's so awesome that you're sailing somebody else's stay for the gel work together so great you absolutely that you mentioned you're going to begin. Permit to serve food is. Does that mean you're actually going to be cooking the food onside and serving it to customers. You're gonna do some little. We're gonna do breakfast biscuits in the morning using our sausages and are meat products and then for lunch. We'll do some sandwiches easing some of our mate products and then also some soups. I i do recipe cards So a lot of my recipe card. That people have been picking up. I'm going to do some of those soups to go along in the fall and winter. And it's going to be simple. Nothing fancy but just another avenue to move our meat and Selling another cheese from East tennessee sweetwater valley cheese. Ob's and their cheeses on our sandwiches. Everything's going to be you know local as local as i can get it. That's yo y'all have a lot going on not to mention tobacco in itself because y'all y'all still grow tobacco and and how many acres of tobacco and y'all grow if you don't mind thank cut us. You know pretty good. Every year we've dwindled back down to about thirty two acres. We always like to stay about fifty not really wanna get any more than fifty because the more you get you know the less you can handle it unless quality but fifty is a good good mark but we're down to thirty tae which is still. It's still a lot. This is probably the first year that. I've heard steve say. I don't know how much i can handle. So i mean that's kind of like what we're hoping this mate can kind of take the place for that which you know. I don't know where tobacco is gonna end up in coming years. You know if the less people smoke unless people you know to unless people are using it and they're making it harder and harder to raise it. A lot of farmers are getting of it. Because i don't want to deal with the extra paperwork can.

"Eighty six something like that so as long ago. Listen to took great pictures. It was a great camera. I might still have it around here somewhere now. It's film so of course we wouldn't use it. No it's phil that's phil. Yeah yeah it's it's it's old school. I think i yeah. I don't make gave it to somebody. I can't remember if we have. It needs to go in my graveyard technology on a show that yes that for a while show funk technology in my closet maybe get some other folks to join us for that and and walk through the graveyard. Joe says in a six eight six thousand was when he was looking at before last vacation but never pulled the trigger. Joe i didn't why didn't you pull the trigger on it. What what stops you from doing that. Just the price. it seems Is i was looking on a at amazon on those they they range from old. Let's say seven hundred to a thousand different packages. Sammy i think you know this may be one. I don't know maybe you want to go to a local camera store if they if those things maybe just like best buy. I think i think there is though like i think if we ought to rock brook. I think there's a camera store out there. I don't know of many of them. That are still open. Anders got a great suggestion. I've got a now i'm thinking of sweetwater. I was gonna say gotta rep at sweetwater that i could probably paying and say. Hey i'm thinking about this. I dunno sweetwater sells cameras I i could. i could ask be h As well Tony tony says watching the alpha. The sony alpha channel on youtube just stunning and Anders says bien h better than best. Buy so we don't we don't have one. Maybe we have to take a trip to the new york store. The new york being aged. I will take any current new york. Oh yeah tony says his return to be an h. was flawless So yeah i guess we got a little. We got a little work to do. And maybe this is Maybe i need to give you a little homework. Which is to watch some review videos on youtube Maybe you need to google. Best cameras for photojournalism. And then you'll get some. I'm sure you'll get a whole bunch of different kinds of cameras. And then you know maybe watched him watched him reviews. See what you see. We can We can talk about it and and kind of conversations that would give him time for your contribution so if you got. If you feel strong about this. I know there's a little You know like java versus dot net. There's a little war that goes on in between for camera. Owners between i think canon and sony. I think that's the canon and nikon. Maybe it was those maybe it was those no loyalty to any of the above. Although i think it's always cannon can although i think our video gamers might have been sony. Cover yeah i don't know i would originally i thought i'd buy it for you. And then use it for a camera for podcasting and now alberto has one. That's a little bit cheaper than that. That's a little step up from the the The logitech seen twenty that. I have so. I may go that route. I may go that route instead so Yeah love to hear from you. If you've got some ideas some kits like you need to buy it with this cheaper chief. You buy this way troop e and h loyalty in the chat today on this day. Yeah well i think they're. They're pretty great right. And and you don't have to go to new york. How we know that they ship them over. Andrew conrad rainer about youtubers preferring smaller cameras. And i think that is like a lot of dsl lars lars have gotten a lot smaller because of logging because people are holding their cameras up like this and they do it with the blog arm and they don't i mean unless you really want rich triceps but this is exhausting. We're good at it though lighter. I'm seeing a lot of loggers or a lot of youtubers putting it on a tripod and then they hold the try pie. Tripod like role. So you're not holding the camera. You're hailing. I think that six thousand we should check. I think we want to make sure that that the the video you know you have the by the viewfinder that pops out right and i think that thing you want to be able to spin that myself because filming myself right Mostly be filming my hands. But i wanna feel my face. I want to be able to see myself. Yeah kind of framing purposes. We gotta get some you know we ought to think about getting the getting something set up so you can film the process of knitting one of these. You know one of these dice bags. Bet that might be counterintuitive. Most people to give it to to'real and how to make the thing you're selling but i think that there's a lot of people who will buy it regardless because they just don't wanna learn to crochet just wanna watch do it they wanna watch you make it but there are a lot of there. Were some people in the comments of that post. I put in that facebook group who were crochet. Who are asking me for details of how i did it because i made up my own pattern and so i think it would be nice for those bulls just share economy rate in from a youtube standpoint. The more people that like it they share. They get you get views. You get everybody's bags to hold dice or whatever you want to hold we gotta we gotta set up your youtube channel. What we gonna do working on it. Get that technically. Have videos on youtube channel of me we get. We gotta get We had to get that thing we've got to put a plan together and get a grind so if you wanna send me some camera recommendations. I think we got a couple of weeks. Don't we so send us Senator email senator recommendations sooner the better jim at the average guy dot tv. We'd love to kinda we'd love kennedy today. I have to admit. I want old school. I wrote our show notes on paper funny like when an artist has a physical set list. You steal it after the show. Yeah no right on. The drummer usually has a list. That something like this..

"Contact list. Just i know seems very harsh to me but me and my husband just obeyed because you're under a court order and that's what you bill. The judge calling the shots on the case was nina james in two thousand nineteen. She stepped down after running the juvenile court in sweetwater county for close to twenty years. She doesn't remember the specifics of larissa's case but was willing to talk more. Generally about her approach to juvenile justice. I think the reason. I was so passionate about kids because i have kids of my own. I sat there as a mother as much as a judge. She says she wanted. What was for kids and that meant holding them to high standards. Something she was worried wasn't happening at home or in school. Kids are allowed to retake tests that they do bad. And i'm only thinking what is bad about. We're preparing kids for the workforce. They can't not do their work on time. This is awful when kids appeared in her court. The buck stop there. Her approach was to hold them accountable and hopefully get them back on track. And so i saw out of home placement in some cases a very very beneficial thing to keep the kids safe. Keep them alive for you can help them and then to you know. Get them that. Help the counseling and the resources that we didn't have locally. This is something. I heard a lot in my reporting because wyoming is so huge and many counties have such small populations. The can't support local programs to help kids who've gotten in trouble but judge james says sending kids away is not just about resources she believes it also teaches them an important lesson and hope that while they were out of their home. They kinda grew up a little bit. Sometimes you have to have things taken away from you before you understand. How much really like him. You know james says. She's heard positive feedback. I have gotten so many letters from so many kids. Who have told me that. If i hadn't intervened in their lives.

I am like you know when you're sort of sweaty so you take your shirt off but then it's like air conditioned sinn. I just feel freezing. Yeah i'm like have completely transformed to cold naked vannice at record this episode. God what a low point for you and on a monday to yeah classic. Hashtag mondays starting off the week long. we tweeted from making a mirror twitter account. That's right for some lightning round cues to a health care through. I like this question from Mo money mo problems darkness. poppy tweets who could eat more of their favorite food by mass or volume in one sitting out of the two of you. Wow that's a good question. I wanted to answer that. I think it's me well. What would your food be annie's. Macaroni and cheese. Okay and i could genuinely never stop eating. The only reason i ever stop is because there isn't more. Yeah so. I guess that sounds like a good video. There has to be at theoretical point where you start feeling so sick and you. I guess you've never been there. I know i've liked definitely taken down two boxes solo. Which is like there. Have been times where. I ate a box of annie's alongside mcdonald's french fries and a chicken sandwich. That's big that's a lot. Mine would probably be french fries. Or if i really wanted to take this seriously watermelon. Watermelon is very big. And i can eat it without getting filled up with oil and salt. It would just write sweetwater. I guess if we did it strategically like that. We're like you're eating watermelon. And i'm eating and it feels like by volume. You'd you'd have to win. Yeah but i think back at the college humor off old college humor office. Remember bet where somebody said. I bet you can't eat three pounds of food from the deli hot bar and i think it was zach klein who ended up just buying three pounds of watermelon and eating it fairly easily beat the system because a lot of water. He's a smart guy very delicate. I don't think anybody like three pounds of turkey meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Kevin corrigan. Did that's correct. What is your preferred amount of time to wait between watching tv episodes Like what was the last show you binged and did you do nightly or deep prefer like let's take a few days off and come back chill and i got really into this show called. What was it called. What was it called halting to it. You've already talked about this. Show okay so. I'm not like the kind of like been ger- like let's stay up late and keep on watching like yeah. I think i want to go to bed by. I want to start getting ready for bed by eleven so like usually too But i like back to back but yeah bit like back to back in the next night. That's kind of like a vibe. I prefer like the the live succession cadence of like awesome episode. Let's wait a week. I don't have the like. I need to wait. And then fucking watch six and tonight like that it it away from me a little bit. I you become numb to the story and like the excitement. I guess i that's true but i i think a back tobacco and then you could wait a couple of days. I feel like it's nice. It's really nice to get that like that. Second atta boy that lake second dopamine hit like you you have a great sandwich and you finish one half and you still have the other one ready to go. I like yeah that yeah but you also you have. Sports is the thing and i do too. I like that but it it makes watching. Tv a lot easier because you're not like constantly looking for something new like when i like something. I'm like great. I'll watch two episodes of halt and catch fire tomorrow. It's game four of this playoff series that i'm invested in And on the weekend. I'm watching football and it. It's and i. It's football in the worldly sense not american football which i am actually out on Really yeah i only watched. I only watched the What was the big one called the super bowl. What's the big one called. I almost go out dare you. Yeah no. I only watched the super bowl. I watch places. yeah. I always talk to like friends of mine. Who don't watch any sports at all. Like good friends of mine have not watched a single football basketball. Like i don't know anything. And they just like. They need to have a like from eight to midnight. They're watching something else and it's like they watched so much like netflix. And like how do you have time to watch all these random shows. I watch five hours of sports day. They watched hours of a movie edward. Tv show that. I've never heard of and so it all adds up to the same amount of time. What do you do when basketball's not on your watch american football yet but in between basketball football there's a few months of just like not knowing what to do. I can't even tell you what i do at night. Wow and then. During the pandemic there was like no sports for like four months straight. That was a real low point. Yeah i'm a. i'm got a good sports clip. going now the soccer's gone The worldly soccer the worldly football. But i'm into formula one. I'm watching the the grand prix every sunday. Now wow. maybe i could do that. That'll fill up one morning. But then do i really need more. Shouldn't i just like purposefully. Avoid it. So i don't watch more sports so sports. I think sports are really beautiful thing. It's like human drama. That's like unfolding. Oh the olympics are coming up. That'll be great. Two weeks of non basketball non football sporting event. And they have they've got basketball are all of the Basketball players like i saw kevin love's not participating because of a the you know the fucked up nature of them forcing the I thought he was just injured old. Maybe that's it is all the nba's star is going to be on the team. Know a bunch of them. Don't wanna go. Lebron said he was kind of old and he's already won three gold medals so he doesn't need to do again chris. Paul same needs to recover. Anthony davis also one doesn't need to play. James harden was gonna play. Didn't play the one the one player that didn't need to play an is there any ways. Kevin durant is a yeah. I'll go to tokyo and keep playing basketball. Are you sure you got a long seasons. Like i got nothing to do. I'll go to fuck japan. It's kevin durant and a few others and then three people who are playing in the finals. So devon booker. Jrue holiday and chris middleton are all on the olympic team if this series goes to seven. It's like game. Seven is on thursday of this week and then like the olympics begins three days later tokyo so all the ultimate battle each other then take a private jet together maybe across the world and then start flying again together in a few days with a with a group of strangers that they've never played before that's bonkers. I mean it's it's the olympics so even though they always win handily but it's still hard not always. Yeah really they used to. Yeah they used to always win handily and then more and more of the stars were like. Oh we don't need to play and then it's like they started losing again like in two thousand or two thousand and four They didn't medal or finish in third or something because the world caught up the us got worse. And then there was the redeemed team in two thousand and eight. Were like kobe. Lebron dwayne wade. They all like all right. Let's go back win. Chin louisiana gold medal and then they did and then i think.

"sweetwater" Discussed on Beer Guys Radio Craft Beer Podcast

"Guy's radio show welcome back to bear guys. radio show. All episodes are available on demand. So if you missed the broadcasts get the podcast beer guys. Radio is available in all popular and unpopular podcasting apps. Now let's get back to classic american craft beer so guys getting into this Next segment who do you think about when you think. Og craft beer like the original squad of craft beer. You got on the table right here. Well the yes. We do have a little bit of a cheat here. We we did open up an anchor. Steam beer anchors up. That's right. I mean that. The story of of anchors. There's american craft beer at its finest. I'm more familiar with southern crafts. But i mean you got to mention sierra nevada. Sure yeah we already mentioned sweetwater. Sam adams of course course yes. There's there's big ones we're missing out there. There's ones that. I don't even know because they never left their states before they went out of business. It's i a lot of people. Bring up new albion. We they started in seventy six or something like that. They didn't survive. But i think they are credited with creating maybe not the first but one of the very first american style. Ipa's out there. So we we do hear about that this dogfish head dogfish forget. Don't fish with sam adams. I almost kind of think of them. As being kind of the second part of the second wave in fact you know. Sam adams definitely part of the i. I always think of dogfish kind of coming in that dividing line in craft beer where we had the late nineties. Where things kind of took a hit. But then out of that though technically dogfish head did start before that happened. They didn't really get going until after that happened. So i mean. We got them mention to highland brew out of carolina highlands. They've been around for over twenty five years. There's just so many it's hard to even go over all of this thinker. That's the cool thing about anchor. I looked into that. A fair amount for this and That story is pretty amazing. The guy fritz maytag didn't start anchor but he was a big fan of the brewery and he had some good inheritance yet some some maytag money some family money and he heard that they were having trouble. They were circling the drain. Potentially going to go out of business is like hey. I'm going to invest. So he bought fifty one percent of the company thinking. All right i'll be involved in. This will save a beer that our love. I'll advise them well. Pretty quickly creditors came after him because well they needed some money and he had some money and he was the owner so the way i read it he almost immediately got into improving the quality of the beer to increase sales and From what i read it took him like a decade to actually break even or start turning a profit but he came out with so many crazy. I i mean just think anchor. Steam first american craft beer generally acknowledged nineteen seventy-one the anchor liberty mail the first modern ip nineteen seventy five anchor christmas the first seasonal beer in nineteen seventy five. He's also credited with the first american porter in one thousand nine hundred seventy two so all of these. I like when you think about. It's like i had no idea. I knew that they were early on and they really set the bar but they really came up with a lot of stuff. It blows my mind. How often do you guys drew. Wind up drinking an anchor. You even see them around very often. I mean this is my first anchor steam. In as long as i can remember and we even had a. Is that another one. Yeah hazy app over there. I didn't even know they made his. Epa you know it's funny. I saw that on the shelf. I was looking for anchor. I struck out where i was at. And i thought oh that's interesting. They're getting into the hazy. Ip a game and like. Oh that's weird. It turns out that they were one of the pioneers and dry hopping beers. They were dry hopping beers back in the seventies and early eighties before anybody even heard the term. It's amazing to me how much these craft brewers have affected the industry as a whole. Oh yeah i mean what. It's done to the big boys out there and the the innovations they've had to make and they were making products that people didn't know about yet the people didn't drink as out of nowhere. I mean i guess you can probably dig back and world war. Two people came back craving these beers they experienced in other parts of the world. But really i mean they were making stuff that they didn't know people were going to buy. Yeah and i gotta say to talk about craft beer versus macro. It is a little strange drinking anchor. Steam out of a can and craft beer cans. Go hand in hand. It does now true the threesome. In due to another pioneer in craft. beer dale's pale ale right before that. And that was exclusively only ever oskar blues. Got to get the name in there right. Only ever in cans in kind of normalized it before that. Everybody thought he as like. Oh you don't want cans. Mad beer goes into cans. Good beer goes and glass now completely. Everything's yeah now. It's the only reason people are doing glass right now because we've had show because it's so popular so it's amazing how things change over the years. Although i will say this. So i'm a retailer and i do still get customers coming in saying oh. I don't want that nakane and has that metallic flavor to it and in the entirety of my lifetime at least the entirety that i've been drinking in my lifetime. I've never had that metallic flavour advocate. Because of can now. I've had it in beers before but that's because of an off flavor. Yeah that's definitely something that it can occur when you brew improperly gets old budweiser. Yeah well they used to. I don't think they used to have the same kind of lining inside the cans back in the day as they do now. It's like a it's like a class lining or something. Some interesting polymer or something like that but Manso back in those days. Back anchor in the seventies were less than one hundred breweries in the us at one point time. Nineteen seventy eight. There was just like eighty nine apparently while it's amazing to think how far down at once that's at the very beginning of craft beer. Now we've got eight thousand eight hundred and eighty four as of twenty twenty the latest figure ice on that and it wasn't until two thousand fifteen that the brewery count exceeded the number of breweries. That were here in the us in eighteen seventy three. So that shows you how much beer and general dropped in the us in the twentieth century you know and the late nineteenth century so it's pretty devastating so four thousand one hundred thirty one breweries in eighteen seventy three. We never have of magin there. Were that many bruce in the us in that in that period of time so where they craft. I think they would qualify if they're around today because there were neighborhood stuff. It wasn't consolidated. So i mean at least microbreweries. Do you think that number dropped. Because of prohibition oh for sure i mean obviously the i was looking at a line and and it drops to the floor during prohibition and it takes a long time to recover from that peru's you can't stop making beer and still stay afloat and then thirteen years later. Oh you know. Hey sell beer. Turn off the taps. Know everybody's gone everything sold so well and also like the legislation didn't support burs anymore. I mean look at georgia. It wasn't until twenty fifteen. We will start doing some to go beers from our breweries. And now i mean it's great that we have that modern day. Take on what you can get away with going to a brewery. But coming right outta prohibition you know thirteen years after the fact i'm sure breweries just were completely stonewalled from going into anywhere. Now we're spoiled can't keep track of which ones are out there now. You look at a board somewhere and it's it's new beers every day. Yeah it's one six. Yeah there's a little bit of analysis paralysis for option fatigue or something you go in there and boy. I used to be really into that habit. Just because it's new. But now i kind of want i just want to..

"Spray your ginger ales your orange sodas i feel like more people should be adding cucumber soda to that very regular mix and this is the only company i would just to do that right. I don't want to shame anybody but the sprite people sprite continues to mystify me. It's neither lemon nor line mass. Not both yes. It is does not approach. Either of those citrus. I don't why don't they just call it sweetwater yet. It's i would love a lemon lime flavored soda. But i've never had a tangy. I expect that to be tangy. It's not tangy. It's not sour. It's just clear liquid with sugar. You should try bubble up bubble up bubble up. Is the bottled cane. Sugar under the radar. Sprite type drink that. I think you'd i think you'd enjoy it. It's a better. It has a lemony flavor to it. It's it's much. Closer to what you're describing. Then sprite is. That's kind of a dream drink for me. You know. I love lemon. I love a lime. I love a soda. There's another one. Ooh what is the name of it. How am i blanking claiming to be a soda expert. And they haven't there's another even harder to find lemon lime soda that uses actual lemon and lime oils and now on is great. And i'm so mad at myself that i'm blanking on it right now. It's not lemme lemme is just a straight ahead lemon soda. I hope i think of it by the end of this. And i will not forgive myself if i don't devote at least part of your brain energy for the rest of this podcast trying to remember. Okay this is wonderful. I'm going to reserve the rest of this to be have cold. Because i do feel like that will add an extra element to it. I think people should seek this out. It's delicious this should be in more markets absolutely can can you imagine. I always say this to people first of all. I don't drink alcohol. But i've been told by many friends of mine knew that this was introduced to this that this is a great mixer that make sense to go. You can make a cocktail with this. And i've always said if you were having a back yard and you had a cooler full this stuff and you this drink when cold on a hot day outside. It's i can speak from experience..

Announcing The Ridership, a free community and resource for the gravel cyclist

"Random to the show Yeah it's good to be back with you. I'm not really a guest at this point craig. I think i think. I'm i think i'm a regular buddy in co hosts at this stage so you don't have to commute to the show video. Thank you thank you good to you. Good to speak. I guess always is always as an i love that. We're on video. And because i'm in southern california. I'm in shorts and a tee shirt and you're in northern california in the morning wearing a ski hat. Yeah some definitely must say. I can't complain My family's back in boston. I'm not sure what the weather is right. Now but There's a reason why i'm not there for the winters and this is definitely a good place to be so i'll take the cold. Yeah absolutely. I feel like i'm really turning a corner down here into panga with the help of the community i've mapped out several real key important ridge lines and canyons between here and santa monica. And now i'm i'm really Experiencing asunto euphoria. Because i'm starting to kind of make connections between the two and i got lost on a rotten single-track that lead nowhere yesterday but also found. Just this rad single-track connector that i just. It's a point of discovery of new areas. That i really love when you've got the basics down and you can start digging into some of the lesser known trails. Yeah i'm starting to get that similar. Sense of familiarity with my surroundings have been here only for a couple of weeks. And i had done some writing here before but not much information's on it in the Again you know in the santa cruz mountains. Just north of skaggs point and so. I'm doing a lot of writing kinda to the west of there towards the coast backup. Then yesterday. i wrote king's ridge up in Outside of grenville. Unbelievably gorgeous out there. the grasshopper what is it the super sweetwater and the old caz racists go through their train is unreal and we were on the road the whole time so that i know there's a lot of good dirt but The vistas just unbelievable. Yeah and frankly cinema. County roads are often worse than the trails in my ex. Well i was writing six fifty. So i was. I was in good shape but one of our one of the two people i was with we were riding in a socially distant way. Everyone into we'll be talking about that in a moment One of the people we were with only have thirty. Two's and was definitely feeling the extra you impact and so on. So i was glad to be on fat rubber. Yeah exactly and you reference the grasshopper series. I had miguel crawford the founder of that series. He's been doing it for twenty years Which is kind of crazy Twenty one years. Now i guess and you can imagine what the equipment was like back in the day and in our interview he kinda often joked about. You know you just as soon see a mountain bike on the start line as you would proper road bike and everything in between over the years. In fact one of the people i was with at their brakes. Were starting to fail because it's so steep and fast and so on that just The the compounds in their breaks was seemingly anomalous classifying. Or something where they're just losing breaking power at the extremes kind of sketch. I didn't have those problems. Fortunately and i won't name names in terms of who's brake pads. They were either but well. This is great. I mean i feel like these conversations and the discovery process. We're going through in. Our new locations is on point with what i wanted to talk about today. Yep yep Before we jump into that because it will be a jumping off point. Do also want to talk about a listener email and dialogue. I've been having with the member of the community named silas. He brought up something that i've been grappling with someone. New to an area without local friends is just kovic safe riding and obviously did an interview with dave from unpaved about the event they did and all the changes they made to make covid safe but for for all of us on the day to day we've got to think about how to ride as covid safe individuals and is it safe to ride with others and what techniques can we do and what i recommended to silas is since neither you nor i are experts on this is let's let's put in the community forum and let's have a discussion and see how we can provide information to one another and have a dialogue about how individuals are comfortable in terms of writing with others. Today yeah and it's certainly not something that we are qualified to discuss ourselves You know we're not epidemiologists. We are not medical professionals and so on norway claiming that you know we have actually if we have anyone in the community Who has that sort of expertise can point to articles and so on This would be the channel To contribute to the conversation. Because ultimately i think for all of us including the experts that there is a this is like an an ongoing iterative optimization function. We're trying to find the right balance between you know. Mental health comes through social connection and that we are safe from A disease a pandemic that know is i mean. It's not like ebola so it doesn't have that extreme seriousness but it is serious enough especially potentially to other people that we might transmit to where we wanna take precautions. Striking that balances is something. We're all trying to figure out.

Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career

WASP Documentarian Erin Miller

"I'm talking today to Aaron Miller. Now, Erin is not a pilot, but she is the granddaughter of a wasp that's women's airforce service pilots, and she has a fascinating story to tell. So Aaron, thank you so much for being with us today. Thank you for having me your welcome so What I'd like is for you to to share with us what what your grandmother has shared with you about her flying story, and then we'll get to your story of how you how you made things right for your grandmother. But can you tell us how she got her starting aviation? So. My Grandmother. Elaine. Dan. For harmon was born in Baltimore Maryland in Nineteen nineteen and she grew up in the city and was born at home in her house. And had two siblings and was very independent. sporty did a lot of rotor bike and very athletic growing up and she attended the University of Maryland in College Park. Maryland for college. and. She did lots of activities there as well. She was a cheerleader she was on the rifle team swim team. She was in a sorority in all kinds of things very active and her senior year of college. She saw an advertisement in the school newspaper for the civilian. Pilot Training. program. Which I'm sure your listeners are familiar with but it was a program in the nineteen thirties to have more people in the United States prepare to get a pilot's license and Senate was I guess subsidized by the US government and it was offered through a lot of universities and university. Of Maryland was one of them. And Anyway. So they had an advertisement for this program where you could learn how to fly and it costs thirty five dollars. Or forty dollars and you got thirty five hours of flight training and ground school and whatever. So my grandma thought that would be cool. So she applied and at the time which doesn't sound like a big deal you're signing up for a class nowadays. But back, then if you were a woman, they only accepted one woman for every ten men in the class. So you kind of had to I don't I never asked her if there were comp competition about this or she just happened to be the only woman that applied I don't really know but anyway. So, she asked her dad for the money and she also had to get a permission slip signed because she was female and under the age of twenty one and not married. So her dad had to sign a permission slip and that's how she initially took pilot training lessons West, through this program at the University of Maryland. Very. Cool. So after she got her thirty five hours, did she continue to fly on her own? Not Really she I think she did a little bit but she basically that was in nineteen, hundred forty, sue her last year of college. She got her pilot's license and then not too long after that, she got married in the summer of nineteen forty one. To my grandfather, and then as your listeners I'm sure. Well, aware six months later Pearl Harbor happened. So I don't think you flying around was generally something that happened. A Lot. So at that point, my grandmother and grandfather were moving around a lot to support the war effort they lived in Ohio at one point for a while and we're kind of working at different places. And and so how did she get back into? So in nineteen, forty, three, I believe there was an big. The Women Airforce Service pilots kind of became newsworthy and there was a little bit of news about them. Newsreel. The old newsreels are in life magazine, and so my grandmother heard about this program called the WAAS. And thought she could apply and she asked my grandfather. If he thought it would be a good idea and he thought it would be a great idea for her. So she applied and she kind of didn't really think she would get in because she really the most she had done was that civilian pilot training program she didn't have a lot of hours. And she kind of applied and thought oh well, we'll see what happens but they accepted her. So that's how she ended up becoming one of the Watson. Then she started training in April of Nineteen, forty four where did she go for Carini? She was in sweetwater Texas Avenger field, which is in western Texas. About an hour west of Abilene Texas. Now. Did your grandfather go there with her when she went there No. So my grandfather was an engineer and he later became a patent attorney, but he was not in the service because he had a physical defect so he was So, he couldn't serve in the army. But he was I think recruited I would say by a company to actually manufactured airplane parts called Jack and Heintz which some people may not because I've seen their parts in the in the warbirds He got sent to Asia to work on a plan to repair aircraft for the US military in theater in the Pacific. So the planes didn't have to be sent back to the continental United States to be repaired to save time. So he got sent over there to work on that program as a civilian, and so he was gone during this time when she was trainy. tweet water. Aircraft was she trained in? So she was trained on I think they were all trained on basic plane. So things like the the steersman PT, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, eighty, sixes, bt, Thirteen's neither all planes that she was training on. And what did she eventually flawed she I assume she was multi current and flew a lot of different airplanes as wasp. Yes. So all the WAAS flu lots of different planes and there were groups of wasps that were trained to fly every plane that was produced during World War Two from little trainer planes all the way up to be twenty nine bomber. So not every wasp was trained to fly every plane obviously but they're little groups trained to fly like you know pursuit crafter bombers or whatever. So. She was trained to fly bt thirteen's to train men in instrument training. So that was her job after she graduated. So she was transferred to Nellis Air. Base. In Las Vegas. And with her best friend from the WAAS Maggie Gee and Magnesia was to- target pilot in Las Vegas. So they were transferred there and my grandma trained men on instrument training in the thirteen. And she was also has some time as a co-pilot on the B seventeen.

April Is Podcast Experiment Month

"I talked to you about abundance yesterday and podcasting from a place of abundance one of the benefits of having an abundance mindset. Is that you get to do weird things if you're not living hand to mouth in the thing that you're doing in your business and your art in your profession you whatever. You have some bandwidth to do interesting things. And that's why I am declaring April twenty twenty as podcast experimentation month okay. It's just me that made that declaration but nonetheless. I think it's a good idea and I'm hoping other people will jump onto this idea especially those working podcasters who have have finding themselves now with different circumstances maybe more time maybe less time whatever but just different circumstances especially because we're all as I said before locked inside let's experiment. Let's try different things. You can try for example experimenting the location of how you record. I saw great post on Reddit which I will linked to here in the episode details. That showed someone setup as they were podcasting now from their garden and it's great in a captured a totally different ambience. You can't go to the park and record but you certainly might be able to go into your backyard or your garden or some other place and capture the sounds around you. Maybe you could also changed location by podcasting in a different section or room of your house. You know each room. Each area has a different tonal quality. Maybe that will enhance what you'd maybe you're podcasting from the exact wrong place in your home. There's a much better place. Maybe it's in your car which you have driven in two weeks right. As long as you're not under a shelter in place order you might be able to go take a walk and take your recording year with you. Take your phone with you find a way to get your microphone on your phone working together look. Amazon and sweetwater and BMW are still shipping equipment. So if you need to Bhai dangles red actors to do things give it a shot capturing the noises and sounds of your neighborhood again. Staying six feet away from people can make an interesting addition to your show. You can experiment on different equipment. I just mentioned calling up all their from places. But if you're like me you probably have more microphones than you know what to do with. I talk on an SM seven. Be Every time I do this show. But why wouldn't I break out that Samson? Cue To you that I bought because it was cheap. And give it a shot. Gaza mess him fifty eight. I've got some level and microphones. Heck I even have an old blue snowball which might have an interesting character. Wanted these days Maybe I'll try that or what about the other equipment that you have that you might not be completely familiar with a lot of people still like to use the. Blue Yeti microphone and fine okay but do me a favor now during April podcast experimentation month. See exactly how it works. Those three settings on the back that you think you know. Try them out. Try Different things with them. Try Different Mike placements. Maybe don't put it in the middle of the table and shouted across the room. Maybe try it differently or if you need to open up the manual. See exactly what that thing you have. That piece of equipment is designed to do and are you using it the right way. Now's a great time to experiment with that. You can also experiment with a voices on your show. Are Your kids at home? Like all too many. I have had to cut out a lot of kids. Sounds for some of the shows that we help engineer around here but maybe bringing those kids all on would be kind of fun. I have heard some cool podcasters who are trying that using what they have. Maybe now's a great time to bring on Co hosts or guests if you just do a monologue show like to. Maybe that's a way to play it with new voices on your program.

Confidence is the Key

"What if I walked through the world with the confidence that I have like I do when I'm singing in the shower when I'm singing in the shower. Can't nobody tell me. Thank I mean. I can hit all the notes I can hit this. I can hit that nothing matters to me. Nobody could critique that like I feel like I could win American idol. If I was singing in the shower, but my confidence is such that I may belt out notes that I would never do in person. I would never tip to do those. But with that confidence that I have when I'm just me in my own little shower. I'm doing my thing. Go to places I never thought I could. And you couldn't tell me that I'm not a rockstar. So let's land the plane here by thinking thought for you today on Wednesday, April third, here's what I want to tell you walk through the world with the kindness of the Chick-fil-A employees and with the confidence that you have when you're singing in the shower write that down right down with a sharpie. So it doesn't go anywhere because you need to see it you need to fill. It you need to see you need like just Blair it wherever it is. Okay. And and put that somewhere where you can it's a daily reminder to you of how you should live your life because I think, and I believe strongly that a lot of people really and truthfully struggle with confidence they have all the -bility in the world all the ability to do whatever they wanna do. But their confidence has been broken by several things a negative spouse, unsupportive, boss or mentor. What have you, and then they get frustrated, and they lose that. Step that rocket power that will project them into the stratosphere, but they lose it because they let somebody else's opinion of them or their dream determine their reality. Ooh. That's that's pretty good. So I ask you are you one of those people is somebody else's opinion of you determine your reality. And if it is let's talk about it. So here's what I wanna do if you like this podcast, please share it. So somebody else. Will stumble across it like you did. And maybe it'll have an impact on them because I'm here to help you and learn along the way there's a I have a gift I can't help it. I've been given something I have to get out. I can't hold it in. If I do it's called greed, and I'm hoarding something that has to be out and given shared. It's just like you you probably the best watermelon grower in the world. But if you don't grow the seeds who the hell's gonna know that you were the best one you got to see you got to plan them and got to nourish them. And then let it come out. Do you ever think that do you ever see those Mellon people selling watermelons on the side of the road? And how many times have you walked up to one? I remember I never forget this. I was in Sweetwater Alabama. Okay. Sweetwater look that up. It's a little place in Marengo county for those of you doughnuts and southwest Alabama north of Clark county. Can they have a fantastic football team? They were one a at the time little bitty school. But may and they can play and I remember being a sweet water Alabama stopped at a street off a dirt road somewhere in. This guy will sell water mill didn't have a tooth in his head. Maybe have one right a male. Hey told me coming here. More chewing on something. I don't know what it was. This is the best watermelon in the state Alabama better yet. This is the best one this side of the Mississippi. I said whatever do that's what everybody says he cut. This watermelon up super-duper ran and juicy in at that moment. I believed that that was the best watermelon in Alabama. I bought four watermills that day. I wouldn't have eaten four watermelons in a year. But he had me convinced that that was the best watermelon Alabama. I damn sure listened. So you'd probably say why is he telling me story about Waterman because here's why your confidence is a hindering you from being able to be the rockstar that you are you're created to be something great stop walking through the world being a copy being original be yourself and watch the things fall where they

Plotted From A Prison Cot, Wrongly Accused Man Whips Smoothie Dream Into Reality

"Support for this NPR podcast and the following message. Come from NBC's new drama the enemy within Erica shepherd betrayed her country. Now, she's the FBI's only hope in stopping America's greatest enemy. But can she be trusted Mondays beginning February twenty fifth on NBC? A man went out of prison and into business. Mark Shand spent almost three decades in Massachusetts prison for a crime. He did not commit New England public radio's Karen Brown reports on his effort to make up for lost time. Heavily tattooed and muscular, Mark, Shan, pours, a freshly blended pineapple and coconut smoothie into a plastic Cup. He lets it overflow into the dome lid and passes it to his five year old granddaughter recap. Wait a minute use two hands. She passes it to a customer at shands smoothie cafe Sweetwater. So you go. Welcome. This year old Connecticut business is meant to reboot a career. Shan says was stolen from him at the age of nineteen in the months before he was arrested for murder he'd been preparing to open his first clothing store sign. The lease got LLC had not been locked up. Where would I be known, Shan? Now, fifty four always insisted. He was nowhere near the nineteen Eighty-six nightclub shooting in Springfield, Massachusetts that killed a young woman in two thousand thirteen new evidence convinced a judge to let them go. But as an exonerate Shand was not eligible for job training housing or other reentry services offered to people on parole. So we had to take manual labor jobs with long hours dictated by boss. It wasn't exactly the same as prison, but it wasn't different enough plan on the person. Again, if I could help it but to start his own business he needed money, and he says, no Bank would. Him alone. So he turned to a Massachusetts statute that compensates the wrongfully convicted at that time, the maximum was half a million dollars. He thought the state would right? It's wrong without a fuss. But he ended up spending three years in a legal fight for that money. Some might look at say, well, if the court it to release this person, then why don't you just write the check? That's massachusetts. Attorney general Maura Healey whose office represents the state against exonerates, but the statute only permits recovery if that person has established has proved actual innocence as is common in many states exonerates have to go back to court to prove they didn't get out on a technicality, which takes time and resources we found that the lot wasn't working the way we expected it to Massachusetts state Senator Patricia Jalen co wrote the compensation law in two thousand four and last year, partly because of Mark Shan helped rewrite it the cap on. Restitution was doubled to. Million dollars, plus attorneys fees and claims are now fast-tracked Massachusetts is one of nine states that have recently expanded or created new compensation laws, according to Rebecca Brown of the innocence project, but seventeen states still offer nothing pushing for monetary compensation for very small constituency is politically very difficult across the country. Restitution ranges from eighty thousand dollars per year in prison to no money at all what Brown would like to see in every state is immediate cash and services and a less onerous process to get full compensation when people come out of prison, they have nothing. So they're really in this no man's land in limbo waiting for. You know, just the most basic subsistence when Mark Shans case finally settled a couple years ago, he ended up with three hundred thousand dollars that's about eleven thousand per year in prison and while that paid for startup costs on his smoothie business. He doesn't look at compensation. As a start over grant. It's a moral debt. They should become something because they've wronged him. And it can't give you years back. So the fact that they yanked me and incarcerate me for thirty years the money. They gave me means nothing. Shand also filed a separate civil lawsuit. But that could take years for now he relies on his business acumen to make a living his best selling smoothie is called. Belinda and John Thomson after the lawyers who helped get him out of prison. Russia's whine up green apple ginger last year. He opened a second location. Eventually he'd like to hire ex inmates coming out of prison. Both the innocent and the guilty for NPR news. Which Democrats are considering a 2020 run for President?

"More. During last week's supreme court confirmation hearings. It was the two most junior Democrats on the judiciary committee who made the most headlines New Jersey Democrat Cory Booker threatened to break confidentiality rules. I'm going to release the Email about racial profiling. And I understand that that the penalty comes with potential ousting from the Senate and California Democrat Kamala Harris probe judge Brad Kavanagh about whether he had discussed Robert Muller's investigation with anyone tied to the law firm of one of President Trump's lawyers the really specific question. I would like to know the person you're thinking of because what if they think you're thinking of someone in you don't wanna tell us neither has said they're running. But both lawmakers are frequently on the list when it comes to possible twenty twenty presidential candidates. So this is about the closest I'll probably ever have in my life to an IM Spartacus moment. But it turns out it really wasn't a Spartacus moment. The emails had already been cleared for release and didn't reveal much about Cavanaugh and Harris's questions about a mystery meeting never really went anywhere despite that Republican political strategist Alex Conan thinks both Booker and Harris helped their potential twenty twenty campaigns more than they hurt them one way to break through by fighting harder than anybody else. I you certainly don't want to be flanked in terms of your energy and your willingness to fight on behalf of the base Conan would know. He was Marco Rubio spokesman when the Florida Republican was in the same position as Booker and Harris, a high profile Senator viewed as a likely White House Conteh. Tender. I don't think all them have made up a final decision, but just to keep the option open. There's certain things that you have to be doing right now that to do list includes generating buzz like Booker and Harris did last week also showing up in key states like a high. Oh, we're Los Angeles. Mayor Eric are said he recently spoke to the city club of Cleveland. It's it's funny. Sometimes people ask mayor ever be a president. Could you ever be president a few years ago could an African American ever be president even more shorter than that could reality star ever be president from television. And since it's twenty eighteen showing up on social media or Biden posted a new video today every country needs to control, but that does not require ripping infants and children from the arms of their parents. There's one more thing on that to do list. And it's very important. You need to deny that you're positioning yourself for a presidential run.
