"For another time and we should have an episode about like what happens when we make rules and like other people refused to follow them and that would be pretty. Well we just ranted like two episodes ago right. So yeah yeah. Last week was sweeny Well this is not at all controversial kate. I included this one. Because i do this. And that's the ruling cates house. Is that kids. Make a handmade birthday card for any birthdays that they are invited to. She said cards are expensive. And a handmade card is so much more personal. And i'll admit that i had a baser reason for this. I felt like if my kids were going to get to go jump on a trampoline. Eat cake get a goody bag that. I wanted them to have some skin in the game and often it was. You know saturday or sunday morning. And we're all doing chores around the house. And i wanted them to have a physical and experiential skin in the game for this party. I was going to drive them to drop them off at or stay and so We would put out the markers and the construction paper and it was literally their ticket to entry. And i'd i. There were times where i'd be like. Oh it seems like maybe. You don't really want to go to this birthday party because you're having a hard time even just making a simple card for your friends. So maybe maybe you don't want to go and they're like no no i do wanna go. I knew how to go. I in our family making a handmade card ticket to entry to anything you've been invited to even more. I know we haven't talked about. Thank you know yet and we will get to it. I don't have hard festival about. Thank you notes. I do have the heart and fast rule about making a nice. Doesn't have to be your best work of art but making a nice and writing a nice note and signing your name and putting a little thought into it has always felt like they. They they don't have to do very much. They get dropped off at this wonderland of fun and eat a bunch of sugar and pizza. And i want them to suffer a little bit before so it doesn't to the well. We've talked a lot about gift-giving. Let's talk a little bit about gift receiving on the other end of that transaction right and thank you etiquette and i think i want to set the stage that i do think gifts. In general are the place. You probably see the whitest like the widest range of differences. In opinion about how things should be handled. It's a little different than like number of kids to have it a party. 'cause they're doesn't feel like any implied judgment in that or like it's like a a value choice is just like here's what i.

"I'm Sweeny Murti Yankees win Game one of this double enter over the Mets, 8 to 7 a wild affair. They scored five times the bottom of the seventh and then walked it off in the eighth. The game winning it by Ji or Shelagh. Game number two will get underway in just over 30 minutes. First pitch will be in approximately 5 20. The pitching matchup is Davy Garcia, making his big league debut against Seth Luego. The next game pitching matchup is brought to you by Montefiore. Doing Mohr Mohr on Garcia in just a moment getting ready for Yeah, one of the Yankees top prospects. Finally getting Teo get his call here and we'll tell you more about his journey here in just a moment. Right now, Let's listen. Aaron Boone is comments on the wild comeback win. That was game 1827 over the Mets Sounds of the game. He's brought to you. By Ramsey, Mazda choose wisely choose Ramsey. Mazda usually don't win many of those, but they just continued to battle and put up good at bats there in the end, and then You know, Dixie? You know who can really hit a fastball and controlled his own enough, you know, been grind and lately been battling, finally got to a really good heater and put a great swing on it. Um And then Geo, you know? I mean, I think the shadows were absolutely a factor there those last inning and a half, probably not seeing the ball real well off ideas and and just kind of fights, one off with two strikes there. But just ah, a lot of good job by but by people Me back from that type of deficit, especially essentially with two outs in that inning. What is the emotional roller coaster like for you? As you're watching things unfold? Yeah, I mean, you know You know the hit batter? Obviously void kind of check. Swing it through the other side. And all of a sudden, you know that the table set for something strange toe happen there and you know for us to have Hicks he up there against Diaz, you know, not that anyone's a good matchup ideas, but you know, he's got a good shot there with his ability, handle the heater and and he put one big swing on one. So that was huge. But you're just a good job by these guys. Obviously, we're going through a tough time of of continuing to grind away on. He took Ella Mae you out there is that they're easy behind that. It was kind of just being A little proactive because I wasn't going to play him in Game two, and I felt like if I get him off his feet there for, you know, an inning and a half for what turned into about an hour. You know that I get him in the second game, so I'm gonna d h him here in the second game. Erin, are you OK? Pitching wise against way should we've made a move? We've option Kris Key. Ah, and a brave you will be here for the for the second game. Greg Joyce. Go ahead. Go ahead. MEREDITH. I was just going to say that that inning That was a rough one. For Michael King. Not a lot of hard hit balls. Just what's the level of frustration when you see an any kind of unfold like that? Yeah. I thought, Michael, look this a tough line to go through, Especially with all the lefties they can throw at you and and Michaels. You know, with his stuff really plays against righties. I mean, and lefties as well, but especially against righty So I thought he threw the ball Really? Well, I did think he got a little bit. You know, tired, even though they didn't have a lot of hard contact. They're awesome. Not being out there in a while, obviously probably wasn't going to go more than 60 65 with them today. I thought he threw the ball. Well, you know, I thought I thought he made some good pitches with his secondary, which really helps, then make his really good to seem fast ball play. So I thought maybe a look right ran out of gas a little bit there at the end, but it wasn't a ton of hard contact like, he said. And what did you think about the way chat? Green bounce back? Yeah, he was great. I mean, that was you know against, you know the heart of their lineup. Obviously, you know, really came in and executed with, you know, at the top of his own. I thought he mixed in some good curve balls to keep him honest and make that pitch and play forum. So You know, not surprised to secret income bounce right back like that. He's he's not overly affected by great highs or or or failures at any time. He's really good at turning the page, and he was able to do that today. Chad Green, bouncing back with the three strikeouts in the top of the eighth. He was in the ballgame because the five run rally and Aaron Hicks the game tying Homer Ji, or shall I get the game winning hit? Yeah, they're all today's Mike's amazing players in the game presented by the Yankees official Mayonnaise makes amazing Mayo made locally by Shuffler Foods from one chef to another. Don't try any other now get set for game number two is the big League debut of Davy Garcia. He's a name you have heard quite often the last couple of years. If you've been listening to the post game shows, and when they used to have minor league baseball games almost every time in the last two years, and Davey Garcia took the mound, I would give you his line because it was always something glittering, mostly with strikeouts. Garcia was signed out of the Dominican Republic in July of 2015. For a $200,000 bonus. It is a relatively small bonus when you consider some of the millions that others have gotten like Jason Dominguez or Gary Sanchez. On the other hand, Mariano Rivera got only $2000 back in 1990 on and so Garcia signed for $200,000 as a 16 year old. He turned 21 just this past May. He will be the youngest picture to start a game in the big leagues this year when he takes the mound. Four game number two, which again starts in about 5 20. He is the youngest picture to start for the Yankees since Bill Hughes in 2007. He did not have a great spring training in summer camp, allowed seven or runs in nine innings total, but his strikeout numbers have always been strong, his ability to get swings and misses. And he has pitched well, really throughout the achey system. With one exception in 2019, he started the year That Sari in 2018. He started the year classic tip and really got everybody's attention. But you owe 1 to 70 are a there and striking out 35 batters in 28 innings. Last year, he pitched across three levels. Tampa Trend and Scranton. He was 20 years old. Meaning by the time you reach triple A. He was six years younger than the average in the international league. He was also at a time of the year, which is probably ll tired, which accounted for the 5.40 e R a U had a triple A Nevertheless, scouts from around the majors and inside the Yankees organization all very excited at the prospect of Davy Garcia, who, as I said, just turned 21 this past May. Baseball America ranks him as the number three prospect in the entire Yankee organization Beyond Jason Dominguez and Clark Schmidt. MLB pipeline has him as the Yankees number one rated prospect, and they as Faras tools are concerned. They say Garcia has the best curveball off all minor league pitchers. Garcia getting set to make his big league debut. Here are our in Boone's thoughts. Yeah, excited. Made his way here last night he Ah slept in a hotel nearby. Yeah, he's done well down in summer camp, too. And So you know, the reports that we've been getting have been have been strong and excited to see him go out there and compete, whether it's with the fastball and you know life at the top of his own with it, You know, really good feel and spin on the breaking ball. It's just about him. Controlling his delivery, you know, is a little bit of that crossfire, making sure he stays on line so he can You know, if he's commanding the ball into his lanes, then he's going to pitch really well. Last year, Davy Garcia appeared in the futures game at All Star Weekend. He was an Eastern League All Star..

"Back in Yankee Stadium. I'm Sweeny Murti. That tarp is on the field, so the start of Game two is being delayed. How long we do not yet know it hasn't actually started to rain yet, So it tells you that something is moving in. And we will wait. Official word Yankees lost Game one of this double header to the Met's by the final of 6 to 4. It was a four. Nothing lead. Ah, five runs sixth inning. With three home runs allowed by Chad Green. After Jordan Montgomery pits very well over the first five put the first two runners on in the sixth gave way to Green and then Mets unloaded on green for the 6 to 4 lead, Let you of 64 win. Rather, I'll let you hear from a couple more people in just a moment Election. Oh, when this game does start the Met's air starting David Peterson, left hander. And the Yankees will start Jonathan Wise together right hander and then its bullpen game from there for the Yankees, and we'll see exactly what time this goes off. The next game Pitching matchup is brought to you by Montefiore. Doing Mohr now Aaron Boone at the media a short while ago to discuss his latest loss. Remember the Yankees, now over the course of the last couple weeks have lost six in a row, the three to Tampa Bay, the two to the Braves and the doubleheader and now Game one of this double header to the Mets. Here's Aaron Boone meeting the media a short while ago. Aaron. You opted to take out Montgomery after 68 niches and go green in that situation against Alonso. What did you like about green in that situation? I like greeny in just about any situation, You know, Obviously he's had a couple bumps here. But, um, you know once once we're there Just a lot of confidence in greenie at that point, and you know, Alonzo put a great swing on him on 32 count, and, you know, so it wasn't a great day but felt like he got a couple of pitches to where they want. They just put better swings on him. Why did you think it was time for Montgomery? Um, I just felt like You know, at that point, we're Greenie and Chappy set up. You know, First two guys on going through again. There was a great outing. Thought, you know he really had his only Anywhere you know, had to work a little bit in that fifth where it got a little long and just maybe not quite as Chris first couple pitches up there, even though not overly hard hit balls against them, but felt like it was the right time. It almost looked like Boyd grimaced when he hit first that his final at bat. Is she okay? Yeah. Yeah, He's OK. He's just been dealing with some foot stuff, but nothing that you know, keeps him out. What do you mean by quit stuff? Yeah and Aaron, now six straight losses for your team. How do you get back on track and we get to go out right after it again. So that's that's a good part and No, We just got to find a way. No Last couple of games. That's um, obviously some great starting outings. You know, I haven't been able to finish off the win and we'll get to try again tonight and and we got to go out and get after it again. Who else has a question? Brian Hope Go ahead. Aaron. What do you see?.

"Welcome back everybody. Sweeny Murti on the fan 805 on a Tuesday night and the Yankees were supposed to be in action. They are rained out in Atlanta. They will play two for the price of one tomorrow. It is a 4 10 for speech. 3 30 prion coverage here on the fan. Garrett Cole. Masahiro Tanaka should be. You're starting pitchers for that game. Uh, we're here till nine o'clock and we'll take your calls. 877337 66 66 to jump onboard. Steve Summers comes to 89 a quick break right now. Well, not a whole break because we're gonna talk some Yankees because that's what this guy likes to do. I found that out. But earlier today, I think it was today through the reunion, part of Entertainment Weekly AA whole announcement was made of a West Wing reunion. I mistakenly called it a reboot. It's not a reboot. It is a reunion that is going to air sometime. Leading up to the election to encourage people to get out and vote and, well one of the, um One of the cast members from the West Wing who happens to be a huge Yankee fan is Richard Ship. He played Toby Ziegler in 145 episodes. And Richard's Kind enough to give me a couple of minutes here on short notice with the rain out by Richard, How are you tonight? I'm a untiring. Um, but I'm okay. I'm actually in quarantine. In Vancouver, Canada, Um, for this TV show, I shoot up here on we just figured out all of the the union standards for protocol and all that stuff got negotiated. We were delayed two months. And Mike want. I just got up here and have to quarantine for 14 for 14 days on the Yankees, and I just got the baseball practice today. Yeah, I was gonna ask you about that turned on them of MLB. And it was on there was no picture and no game And I'm thinking what's going on. Then I found out it was a rainout. Yeah, I can't tell you how they can't do that to me because of the hours a day. Did I forget? I'm in quarantine. I get to watch the Yankees. Well, is that are you into it? Just like just like normal. There's are a lot of fans who get turned off because of the short season. All these other things are you into it, just like you always are. I'm calling it a stupid season. I mean, it's a stupid year and really stupid season on DH. I don't mean to disparage, uh, baseball what they're trying to do. But you know, it's it's stupid because all these guys getting hurt because of the short spring training That's stupid because one team Mike and the playoffs having played, you know 58 to 60 games. Another team might get in having played 39 to 40. And then you know all of us, You know, fans going way back R. Who are statistical. Nerds. How do you? How do you measure this season? You know, we're all thinking. The judge stayed healthy. 20 home runs that That's you know, that's had 30 home runs. He was on pace to hit 38 at some point, you know? How do you measure that against 77, you know So it's Ah and then a deejay LeMay who had 400 on had the qualifying it back. How do you measure that? And you know, that stuff makes you kind of silly, But I could stop and watch. Um Ah Junior High school. J. V team played baseball and I could watch baseball from anywhere anytime and when it just gets down to watching whether a pitcher's going toe, you know, challenge a hitter up on end, though that slider down in a way I'm going to watch because I find that fascinating and I love it. You know, I just I just love it. Yeah, I just looked at it, Richard, and we've done a bunch of shows here you only because there weren't games for a long time. But I kept coming back to the idea that you know, we don't need asterisks for individual records or team records. I mean, we all were. We're all going to know what 2020 wass. You know, it's not like it's not like you somehow would forget that this this year happened. So I'm not in favor of marking it in some form or fashion. The scarlet letter asterisk type of thing he'd say, Listen, use your brain if you know if if you want to think the deejay le milieu it 400 or Aaron judgment of ammonium runs, then go ahead. If not, well, that's fine because he didn't But, you know, I think that the records could just be whatever records they are. And not that we don't have too complicated with different things because none of us are going to forget what 2020 actually meant. And what happened. Well, some of us kind of let slip by what 94 men drive down right here. Yeah. Andi, No, we forget that. Ah, um You know that had the Yankees. Ah. The Yankees, for instance, today, Ah had been a normal season, They would have finished first place for the first time in quite a while. So did the 45 years. They won after that, not make up for that for you. 95 they lost to the Seattle? Sure, but 90 90. I mean, you know you don't want to talk about 96, 90 and 2000 That didn't make up for 94 for you. But it's done..

"Couldn't quite hear what he was saying that the house while he was stopped, but somebody else but tells no stopping people. And he was talking about Carter and barren Gary Cardio. Yeah, let's um let's break from this discussion will come back and we'll rejoin that one. Joining us now on the phone lines from Yankee Stadium. Carlos Mendoza is the Yankees bench coach. Aah! And he's kind enough to give us a couple of minutes here. Carlos, Sweetie, I'm here with Ed Coleman. How you doing today? Any How you doing, man? How you doing, guys doing right. Good. Carlos, How are you doing? Good doing good. Just finishing a work out here. There you go. How's Ah, You know, I mean, you kind of forced into these situations when you have a schedule in front of you that just kind of gets pulled away. What's the level of intensity You guys were able to get through today's work and kind of make sure you can pick up Where you left off on Tuesday. Yeah, I mean, basically pretty much feeling like a spring training to point Always, you know, kind of like keeping guys in shape and ready and Hayden ofthe battle machine for body practice, which is Something new and different Frost in nowadays, But so that way they guys are facing some villa, you know, and have us from moving around running wife and some defense work and guys throwing live BP and all that, So he's been great, you know? Do as much as possible. So the guys stay in shape and ready to go, Carlos How difficulty has this been through the injury phase that the Yankees have gone through, and it's almost mind boggling when you list them all. But how difficult hasn't been too kind of, you know, keep this together during this time. You know, Obviously it's hard. When when, when? When you're losing guys like that? But you know, like We went through it last year, you know, And you know, it's unfortunate, but, you know, obviously, the death of the organization has been tested again. And, you know, obviously you guys got to step up and and contribute and, you know It's unfortunate. Obviously, we got guys they're going to be back sooner that rather than later and that's good news. We're getting a lot of positive reports from the training stuff, and that's encouraging. And you know, In the meantime, we just try to get guys ready and and keep guys healthy. So so Uh, we continued winsome some ball games. Carlos, you work with the infielders as well for people who don't know. And so you worked for last couple of years with Tyler Wade and tire astronomer. These two guys were not being thrust into the middle of the diamond as a starting double play combination for the Yankees, and you know they have a little bit of experience here. But how do you How do you balance preparing them for this for a long a zany DH to fill that Not putting too much pressure on them. Ah, but making them ready. Preparing them for what they have to do here is it's It's got to be a little bit of a balance your strike there. Yeah. You know what, sweetie? We feel like the way we prepared these guys even when they're not playing every day, you know their mentality is like they're going to be in the lineup day in day out, even when they're not, you know, so that transition where they do have to step up and play every day on our own. And, you know, contribute. Ah Ah, It's not that big of a transition, you know, by the way, does a really good job of preparing and staining shape and getting work in multiple positions. Toys tied Australia because these are guys that can play multiple positions around the field, so You know nothing changes as faras the preparation again. Obviously, they want to be playing a bigger role now plain everyday. Ah, but, you know, like they're having looked pretty well and they're ready to go there. Prepare And like I say their routine never changes so Carlos. We won't find out how this little break affects the Yankees until after you get back to playing. But you guys are used to playing every day kind of in this, you know, truncated season that we have, and all of a sudden you've hit this patch were you're going to be sidelined here for a little while. However, you weren't playing that. Well, you just You know, I have gotten swept before this. Good break. Bad break. What? How do you How do you rate it? At this point? I guess you could say it might be a good break for us, You know, especially after those three games against Tampa when you know we didn't play. Too well, but, you know, obviously, he starts taking breaks. You know, we have the same same issues when we went to Philadelphia, where we have, you know, we're playing and they were shut down for a couple days and then we got we got to get going again. Eyes. What were dealing 2020, you know, But, you know, I feel like guy sort of ready to go now, Uh, physically mentally, and you know, I can't wait to get back on the plane ing can go to Atlanta. We're talking with Carlos Mendoza, Yankeesbench coach, Infield coaches. Well, Sweeny, Murti and Ed Coleman on the fan. We're here til 6 20 Carlos before Glaber got hurt, were still seeing some of the struggles defensively that he showed in spring training and the only part of the season Mohr inconsistency than anything else because he convey so spectacular in the field. What are you seeing from him? As faras, the work he has to do to become more consistent and not let some of those plays happen. Yeah, I mean, you.

"Welcome back to our virtual old timers Day I've Sweeny Murti, Shane Spencer, a 10 home runs for the Yankees in 1998 and was a September phenom. Even land on the cover of Sports Illustrated. That home run was not one of the 10 that was actually for the 1998 American League Division Series against Texas is the Yankees completed their phenomenal season. After 114 regular season winds. They blew through the playoffs and capped it off with World Series Victor of the Padres. Shane Spencer, joining me now on the phone. Spence How you doing? What's going on My brother? How d How does that hearing that call? What comes back to your mind? The sounds of the stadium. The curtain calls everything like that. What comes back to your mind? I'm old. That's quite sold Thursday. Shane they so it seems so long ago. Ah, you know, obviously is a magical year for everybody on that team, and especially for me, even in Triple A was great, but Yeah, playing at the old Yankee Stadium with the packed houses this Ah, this electricity in the air and it just what a great place to play and very fortunate the playoffs. I'm really good teams. The curtain calls do you might like, Did you have to get pushed out? Do you remember like what do they feel odd for you? Because I mean, you kept getting them to. And that is that Is that September 1? Yeah, I I didn't know a few times. I feel like, okay, cool. There was a few times where they pushed me out there like no, This is this is the right time. You know it's early in the game or whatever. But You have taken while you can, because they don't come very often. Yeah, listen, your ride was different. You know you're you came up through the minors. The same time is is all these other great players, But your ride was a little bit different there. What did it feel like to join them in 98 kind of be alongside guys that you had played with, like Jeter and Mariano in Masada and finally get to taste a little bit of what they had tasted. Yeah. You know what? For me. I swear those those guys were more excited for me than I actually for myself, you know, like, felt like ah, You know, I just want to get a chance to play him and make it and I put a lot of work in the minor leagues doing having good years. See those guys. You know, they're all great players that played forever. But the In the reality they were. They were more excited than I was probably. So that made me feel pretty good and Knowing everybody pretty much already for a couple big league camps and you know the transition was was pretty smooth. What Now? What did you think you could? You have been up a couple of different times. But you come up in September and the Yankees are blowing the doors off of everybody. I mean, what's your thought? Coming in and getting playing time? Almost. You're almost helping guys rest of the playoffs because you're getting a place so much, But I mean, you obviously became ackley. A very You know, you'd be a very big part of that. Yeah, I got called up like three times before that, and really not until third. My third call If I got some playing time and did pretty good, and I have been, you know, found my swing in the minor leagues because Like the first time I had called up I was up there for a month. I think I played one game. So now you've come. All right. That's right out of spring training. I never started the Triple A season, so I go back. It's like spring training all over. So it took a while, Tio. Get adjusted by my swing again and find some good rhythm and then My last call. It was like right at the end of August. I can, you know, possibly be eligible for the playoff roster and And it's such a big lead that actually got more playing time and you gotta take advantage of those moments. And it's tough to crack that line up. When you got your definitely gonna deviate. You got Chili Davis and Del Strawberry. You got O'Neill on Bernie every day, so split time with Chad Curtis Tim Raines. It was tough to get playing time on that thing. Yeah, And when you got he had to take advantage of it. I mean, do you remember you remember, Was there like a can't believe this is happening? Feeling mean? Listen, your your big league player, You know what kind of talent you have. But the idea of hitting home runs in such a short period of time like that at the big League level was there. I mean, were you confident have to know that this was your ability or re kind of like, man? I can't believe this is happening. You know, I never thought of that way. You know, I was running a very few in Triple A and I'm really good spring training. I had good winter ball that year in Venezuela Just continue the whole time. And really, I tell the story I get Ah. Some events sometimes, and it's AH, On the last day I hit a grand slam of the regular season and you could see me almost smiling. Come around the bases, and it's like all you can believe you could believe it Yourself said. Actually, the truth is I was basically loaded. I thought there was one out. I was just trying to distract libel and little scoreboard was two out, so I'm trying to sack line. There's two out and end up leaving it parked all cocky, just laughing myself with you in another home run, that it gets kind of lost, and I forgot it in myself. To be honest with you song. You know, I'm gonna I'm gonna call myself out on this. But in game for the 2000 won world Siri's Thegame is known for the game time home run. The Tino Martinez hit the game winning home run. The Derek Jeter hit the Mr November home run, but The Yankees got what had one run in that game off occurred showing and it was a home run. You hit earlier in that game, you know that that one run ends up being pretty huge. And you consider that the Tino Tuan all Marines of tying and send it to extra innings if they're being shut out. It's a whole different story right there. But I mean, what do you remember about hitting a homer Yankee Stadium in the World Series? Well, it's pretty awesome. And it was off feeling and we have done some charity work down in Florida together through our agents, and you know for some youth programs, so I know I just first time I ever face him. And I remember hit the home run and win the game that you know that serious was really crazy. The comeback wins, But Schilling Jackie came to the club house the next morning, but today and was like yelling for me to come out there. And so I come out of the out of our locker room. He's like eight. I seem to know what the first strike. I have very good bitch, because that's what it is. I died. Alright, There's a lot of people don't like feeling. You know there's a lot of stuff, but we'd actually done some charity work together in in Florida, and so I've known him for a while. So it was pretty funny. I'm like, okay, I'm going to yell at me for what? So it was pretty comical, but at to do that off somebody that has always given the Yankees problems even when he was in Philadelphia, so I thought of all really good off you might. You know, I hit the ball hard all time off him and I don't think I only got one hit off. That was there, I think But I felt really comfortable against him. It was a good one as an important when we consider what happened the rest of that game and unfortunately, the Siri's didn't end the way several others did for the Yeah, Yeah, that was a hard one, once a slow, long walks in right field in Arizona. Right? Because you're in the field when Luis Gonzalez bloops it over the over into center. What? What do you What was your view of it? What do you remember seeing of it? I just like I was hoping to get snap. Is that what you almost did? And you just, you know, got enough barrel on it to get it over their head and you're like I remember being so loud. It's so weird because my 1st 3 years of big league you, you know we want and then you go there and your distant out away and and you've got the best pitcher of all time on the mound, and it just it just wasn't this wasn't our time..

"If you're 73 seeds and knock off one of the better teams, and then what happens, you make a little bit of run. He gets around, put it, so I think he's gonna be more willing to buy. With a couple of more minutes with Steve Phillips, Steve Aah! You're you're GM long enough to go in this league where there were deals made that were need for need not simply player for prospect dumping salary for prospect That's almost every trade we see nowadays. But given the nature of what you're talking about, Can Can we see Maybe some more of those need for need Tina Tran types of trades where one team needs an outfielder. Another team needs a picture and you kind of move those pieces around to make this playoff push. I think it's possible. The challenge for that is, you know the idea of robbing Peter to pay Paul. So I've got a little action of pitching got access and outfield. We match up. We could make that deal. Is that when you create a void on your team, you better actually have a surplus. Know those need Bernie deals more often than not are off season trade. Where I might be able to say OK, I'll give you just satisfy your need. I'll take a player back who may not be ready, but I've got another pool players to go to find it. Now We've got a pool of players that are there that are practicing, ready to go. But typically, you know that's going to your triple A cast and crew. I think there's a chance for the need for need deal in one of the things you could be a challenge is the need for the prospect deal's gonna be tough, but they're all old reports on prospect because many of them aren't playing true. Don't have scouts at these camps to watch him right now, so I think it's you know, we saw team's draft players and old reports. I think we'll see teams trade players based off report. But I think they're going to make some mistakes along those lines because of that, and so I'd be more inclined to be a buyer, believing that teams are going to make some mistakes and some of the prospect they like because the report's over a year old. So the people that are making these decisions are they on the hot seat right now in a 60 game season, when one injury or one small losing streak could have so much sway? Ah, do you see people like kind of Playing for their jobs. A manager GM Is he in a position where he's working for his job for next season based off of this? Yeah, if I'm an owner, it my GM and my manager There's nothing about this season that I'm going to hold against them in any way. Nothing. You know this is going to be a you know, we're going to put the help safety protocols in place. You're going to get bring guys back to camp but strained muscle here a false positive test. If that's what's happening with Soto, you know we got a nerve issue for Strasbourg. You know, I'm not gonna put anything on it because it's a rough spring training Covert 19. Have a guy contract killer 19. That's not anybody's fault. It just happened. So I would just I would hope that every manager and general managers say for the rest of the year. Steve. I got one more minute for this one. The Met's air clean to a 2 to 1 lead. They might have bring it when Diaz in to try and clothes out a second straight. Does the lack of a crowd. I had this discussion Ole Richard near this morning. I don't think it affects a position Players much a guy batting but the lack of a crowd with a pitcher like Diaz when every ball out of the zone or every walk doesn't you know? Bring the crowd, you know, into some sort of a frenzy. Can this situation help a picture like that, as opposed to maybe a player who gets booed a lot? Whether it's Stanton or somebody else. Oh, I think Diaz and Stanton both benefit from not having a crowd right now, now later in the year, If Diaz gets he's going, he might benefit from the energy of the crowd lifting him up. But I think that that every you know where he was last year, threw a ball. You know, Paul won and the booze would start exactly seen that before in for Stanton, not feeling like he's gotta live up to every reaction of every pitch and every bat. And that 3800 was a failure for him in his first year. I think there's a relief for both those guys and maybe some other players, and for some guys, the lack of energy they're going to find a way to generated on their own. Steve, you're on with Eduardo. Most of time. What time can we hear you 7 to 10 a.m. On MLB, No Radio series 209 x m 89 Monday through Friday 7:10 a.m. With Eduardo Perez most of time and a few others along the way, Steve Thanks so much for giving me a couple of minutes really appreciate it. "Tap. There was a full slate of games yesterday. The Yankees gnats off after Thursday's opener, and you've got all 30 teams in action today. We'll get you to the pre game show with John Sterling and Susan Waldman. And just over half an hour you'll hear from Yankee manager Aaron Boone. You hear from the winning pitcher Gerrit Cole from opening night. Technically, it is a complete game for Garrett Cole, although remember was rain shortened, Hey, went five innings largest one run on one hit home run to Adam Eaton and the anchors were victorious. A big game for Giancarlo Sten. He homered in drove in three. In game number two Yankees have a similar line up except Tyler Wade, who did make a very big contribution. Starting on opening night. He is out of the lineup in DJ LeMay, who was back At second base. Remember LeMay, who had a very brief summer training because of testing positive for covert 19 at the start, and he kind of got himself up to speed with a lot of SIM game at bats. And work on the machines, and he is ready to make his debut in game number two. The Yankee lineup is LeMay, You judge and Torres at the top. Stanton, Hicks and Voight in the middle and Sanchez or Shelagh and Gardner rounding it out. It's going to be James Packs thing is Eric Fetty. It was supposed to be Stephen Strasburg, but a nerve issue in his right hand. Has scratched Strasberg, and that might be particularly bad news for stance on more than anybody else. Standing is a really good track record against Strasbourg all their days. Battling in the NL East, 48 bats. He had 15 hits, including eight doubles and three homers. Now remember going back to last season? One of the reasons that they really like Giancarlo stands ability, too. Maybe have a better second year was familiarity with pictures. They said His stats in particular always seem to see an uptick in all the important categories When he sees the pictures more often, the more exposure more bats he has Well, obviously a picture. These familiar with like Strasbourg would be advantageous to stand not as much with with Betty so we'll see how how that affects the nationals will see how it affects the Yankees, and we'll get you to the game action in just a little bit. John Sterling Susan Waldman of pre game coverage beginning at 6 35 I'll take you up until then, and when we come back, we're going to talk with Steve Phillips, the former general manager of the Mets, who is now a morning host on Sirius, six, M's MLB network radio will kick around some ideas, including what baseball looks and sounds and feels like in these first couple of days that were back also the expanded playoffs and what that means. And ah, little bit more. Hopefully before we're done get chance to place comments from Aaron Boone about the commended playoffs. Ah, when he addressed reporters about two hours ago. All the zoom. That's the way we're doing it in 2020. We come back the conversation with Steve Phillips all things baseball in opening weekend, Sweeny Murti all the fan. We're back after this. "On the fan. Ed Coleman Sweeny Murti. We take you another hour till 11 o'clock on this Sunday nights, and we've had a lot of fun talking with Like Stanton and Ron Bloomberg this evening, and he wants to retire was that Does that so That was it So far, yet so last last night's blending into this little bit It's kind of true, but we have a lot of fun now because we're going to welcome in the esteemed columnist of The New York Daily News and our friend as well. Kristie Acker, who has been well, she's covered the Mets. She now covers the Yankees. And my first of all, Christy. It's great to talk to you, but I have to ask you. What's new at the Tampa Zoo. What's new at the Tampa? Zoom watching that got spies everywhere. You can figure out our source either. Oh, no. Now I know you're right about that. Ah, Hey, I was watching on TV at home. Do the show tonight, so I did not come out. The stadium today and watches in person. But it was kind of fun to watch Garrett Cole on TV and I know we're texting during the game was was an impressive up close in person as close as we can get as as it appeared to be on TV. Yeah, He looked really good. He looked really crisp and sharp. He knew what he wanted. I think there is Was that pitch to talk, man. You know, you could see he knew right away. It was like, okay, more spins. He seems yeah, He looked really good, and he seems like he's getting to a point where he feels like he's He's ready. Christy, you know. Ah, you know, Jake very well, Jacob deGrom on And I don't know how much you've gotten to know Garrett Cole, because the situation that we're in but you've got to know him a little bit anyway, in spring training one. I just want it How you know, kind of similar. You thought they were mindset wise. The way they approach the game because it seems similar to me. I would say there's probably a similar Approach towards competition, okay, and a similar approach towards a job. I think cold seems a little more wonky. He's very ensued, describing You know exactly. We know the fin rates and and why you're doing this play that Jacob seems to be more of a feel pitcher for May. He knows what worked for him. He knows how to do it. I can't explain it to you that many times where Cole will go into, you know the of it. I think I think I think it's the corps probably very similar. They have the same kind of reaction. The reaction that you know, Cole had to giving up the home run the other, You know, the other day that antique car No, I remember take of his first start in the major leagues. You know, you could just see how angry he would get when there was something that you know happened the way he did want it to happen, so just learn that way. Yeah, I found it kind of interesting. I think this has come out, Maura. Actually in this last week or so. The effect he has had on the other pitchers. Christy, You know, they all seem to recognize one how good he is, so they can obviously learned something from him. But like you talked about how much he loves to talk about pitching, they've latched onto that, and it seems to be creating. Even in this weird environment where they can get close to each other. They seem to have gotten pretty close. Yeah, you know, and that kind of established itself a lot in spring training for the first spring training or whatever. We're calling it. You know, you saw him talking. A lot of pictures were going out of the way to talk to him. And even some of the younger pictures, which is sizing. Clark Schmidt told me back in February that you know they want to have the frozen to Seymour. You know, he went over Gerrit Cole Kind of like, Hey, you know they've asked me to do this, and Cole got into the into it with him. And so I think if he's so open to so many, you know the younger pitchers and the other pictures. It just really, You know, it's become like a pitching, you know, clinic wouldn't take clinic. It's just kind of like a group that likes to talk fistic. You know, you mentioned this before Christie that it would have been nice. You know, to see Cole Saturday. I think to Graham is going to pitch Sunday. I'm pretty sure he is anyway, and it looked like Cole was going put Saturday. But apparently that is It has changed a little bit, huh? Yeah, I don't think they I don't think he's gonna pitch in an exhibition game, you know, Boone said, has nothing to do with the fact that they're going to get that six times in 60 again, but I think there's probably a little some of that, too. You know the mess. He's not Subway serious games. They're huge down. You know, 60 games out of 60 is a big cardio schedules. So you know, do you really want to show all you've got Yeah. No. Yeah. No, Absolutely. We're talking to Kristi Acker to the New York Daily News. Christy. Um, we we talk. We talk about injuries a lot. We had a lot of practice doing it last year, right? Yeah, And And we rightfully so get a little suspicious about the timeline sometimes knowing we know about concussions. I'm a little you know, I don't want to be scared is the right word. But I just don't know how to pinpoint anything regarding Masahiro Tanaka until we see him start to progress to one mound session after another. I mean, the season is 11 days away. He is there he came into the season is basically their number two starter. I don't know yet what we can count on from Tanaka because he could go backwards at any moment, depending on what happens. He hasn't yet, but I mean, the nature of concussions tells us we're a long way from figuring this out, Wouldn't you say? Yes. I mean, that's the ones injuries that you don't really even have a timeline in the back of your mind about you just don't know because it's based on field. And that's how they feel. It's not like you could see them walking and limping or something. This is something that is based totally on how they tell you they feel So you've got to give him a lot of time. I think that's why Aaron Boone being very vague about it because they don't know the timeline and you know, I I can't imagine. At this point that they are thinking he's going to be in the rotation right now. I mean, Only because they can't count on. You know when he's going to throw off a mound when he's going to face, you know, it's a very specific buildup for pictures, and they don't even have a 30 point Yes. Christy I mentioned before that it looked more like a bandanna. But Clint phrase you're wearing a mask and whatever it is, I don't care. I thought I thought it was that was great. Sweetie and I were kicking around before but I think the end result is that he Seems to have matured seems to have grown up a little bit on the reasons behind doing that, probably more important, you know that he's looking out for others, etcetera. The Logjam around home plate with the empire and the catcher, etcetera. So ah, to me. That was a good sign today. What is interesting here is reasoning for it. He doesn't want to be the reason that anyone else gets sick. So that was I mean, that's a very mature way to look at it. It's a very you know, smart way to look at it. You know, I think the maturity was showing through a little bit in some of his other answers today, too. He knows he's got to be a big year for he needed to have a big year this year before all this happened, but I mean, he's starting to realize that he's he's got a Be consistent on the major league level. He's gotta prove it. You gotta win the job. It's not going to come to him. That outfield is very crowded. He knows he doesn't isn't necessarily fit in right now. So you know, he's he's definitely shown signs of understandings..

"Ah, Josh and howl, New Jersey You're almost Sweeney and Randy Cohen. How you doing? Anyhow, you're Andy. Hey, guys, my questions like this. I am ah, on average ink event and a huge deejay LeMay, a fan, and I hear the news that he's tested positive for the Corona virus, not at the summer training. I want to get your thoughts and what you think. Is there any chance or what are the chances that he'll be ready for opening day? Well, you know, Listen, I think you're still a couple of weeks away, and it's probably different for a position player is opposed to a starting pitcher. If this was the happened, Louis s also for those who haven't heard, Uh Aaron Boone announced after today's practice that DJ LeMay you and Louise Sesa Are not with the team right now. They both tested positive for covert 19 before leaving their homes. Eso they're still in quarantine right now. Their homes. Listen. DJ Yella Mayhew is such a professional player. I'm thinking the idea of him jumping in after if he gets a week of practice in Or, you know it is a missed the first few games because he's a little behind. I would think he's able to recuperate here, but also depends on like, I don't know how this virus has affected him. He says. The positive I don't know how sick he is. I don't think he's going to get Um, I think there are a lot of unknowns here, but he was a terrific player for the Yankees last season, you know, possibly Nbp, almost a magnificent postseason home run that got negated a few minutes later in Houston, but I don't think there's any telling how this is going to affect anybody. Because this is Jody. This is not pulled a hamstring. This is not a you know, a bleaker anything else that we've been dealing with. This is a little bit of an unknown. Well, I think you make a great point their money because a lot of those especially hitters at home, especially top level players have maybe have their own cage. I've been to plenty of guys houses who have their own cage or private workout facilities. And depending on how much it affects him will really depend on how much you can get in that cage and hit you know, And obviously for hitters, timing's everything you know, playing in the field. Ah does obviously didn't play in the field. I was a pitcher, but I know it takes it out of them. But a Zafar as far as hitting if if he's feeling good enough, and maybe not even really showing any symptoms, But he tests positive for it. Ah, you know, he could. He could be an occasion. He feels just fine. It is not affected by somebody. Who you know, maybe has to go into the hospital or potentially being on a ventilator. So I think what you said was great. Is there so many unknowns and so much? You. You can't You really know about any of what's going on and really be able to give a definitive answer about how someone's going to perform when they come back. You know, maybe that maybe he's at the end of it. And it's He's on Day 13 and you know if it's if it's a 14 day quarantine, and you know he'll be just fine and he'll come in and he'll be able to get this wrapped. So there's just a lot of unknowns out there and I think that's what's going to make this season. Even more interesting as you move forward are hopefully it's foreign. And you start playing games. How? How That kind of stuff's going toe to toe determine the outcomes of games. Sweeney murdered on the fan. Let's take one more for me and my potential new co host Randy Choate. Jose in a Bronx. You're next up on the fan, Jose and I went before I ask the question. I just want to commend you, man. That's ah, A Yankee fan from the sixties 62 was my friend. I was nine years old. My first Yankee game, though. And when the actors played the Giants in Siri's, Yeah, but I want to stay. I want to stay you. You're You're a great guy. You know, for a fact pretensions. I actually I've actually set next to you. But you were behind the glass, but, yeah, yes. Yeah, you should behind the glass and I see you there. I've never I've never approached whatever when they let us in again. Next time, please come over and say hi. Yes, I will come over your very, very knowledgeable and very humble and I and I still hate that I used to hate when Madame Roussel. Just try to bull you your eyes. I like back with him. That's always good. I love when dog comes at me and we know TV. Now I am worried that now we do it on TV together. It's fun. Yes, on the fan and the I I have to. I have to say to the moment. Trump Yankee fan because what what? Iwas the earlier today about an hour ago. He was trying to get on you about the crush. It was a trump Yankee fan. Ignorant, but you're very humble, and they took it easy, But Ah, I don't want you coming on that. Thank you. But thank you guys write but by Randy, I went up. I want to pitch for a long time. I think I'm not going to America to play when the ball down in the Dominican at one time. I played three different times. My first place playoff. Really my first time. Hey, that was that was Yeah, That was that was right after I got treated from the funny enough. Omar man, I suggested suggested that I get ah, my agents that I go down and play down there when I got traded. I love Let me rephrase that. Nick Johnson one, Rivera. And Randy Choate got treated for Javier Vazquez, and then he's like, I think it's a good idea, and so I went down there for the playoffs and play for Lee say that year And then there was the time so you won't like this if we saved your team, you'll like this, but the two more or less filling your plate I played for I was I was arugula. And Ah, I played for them. And I think off season of 07 and only if I'm not mistaken and basically almost played the whole winter ball season for both those by God. I would, I would say as far as I'm concerned, I left my mark in arugula, but I'll never forget my beginning. We say that play was like Jose Juan Jose Offerman yet and you know, I understand, amigo with definitely Is definitely special, but I will tell you this. I definitely enjoyed my time down Dominican. If I had to do all over again, I wouldn't change one thing. I'd love playing down there. It was super fun to go down there experience that whole culture and t do that in the way they look at Ah American players because Eric Byrnes is on that lease a team and they called him Captain America. It was just like I'm in a passion. Passion. When Lee say plays arugula is whether it's home or away for either taking on all those feet thick and fan the crowd noise. That's what Sweeny was talking about earlier raised, like Oh, you're gonna miss that well. Years ago. If you goto you really miss it because the crowd's really come alive down there, and that was ah, great part of my career and I love going Dominican. Great. "Didn't know it was George's birthday, but You know, it was an odd day input will tell you this. It was. We know it was hot, but The Yankees never did anything on the field. And that day was strange because Phil Rizzuto had to sit in the stands and Frank Messer and never doing giveaways and stuff, which they never did in Yankee Stadium. So that part was odd. You know, they had checked me and Joanie sitting down there in the first row with with with prosciutto. I said, that's going on down here today. But anyway, it was July 4th. That was the last thing I thought was gonna happen. I thought I was going to get tired to be quite honest. And ah, I was hoping to go seven full innings and then you know they'd probably call it good news, but Honestly. Yeah, I was very fortunate the rest of my life. You know, I've gotten newspaper articles from all over the world for people to sign things and everything. It's I just picked the right day. Bush. What do you remember about the warm up that damn enigma is 94 degrees of game time. We all know that it was a hot day in July 4th. Do you remember anything specific about the warm up for you guys that day? Not not so much the warm up in everything. I just, you know, the in ragged catching everything I was concerned with the 94 degree heat, maybe was concerned more about myself. I don't know how hot it was gonna be back there, but I mean, it was pretty obvious from the get go that rise. He had had something special going on. They'd never really entered my mind so middle of the game or something like that, Because I was always Aware of the scoreboard, but I don't think rags and I talked very much during the game because everything was going pretty 30 well, but when he struck out seven of the 1st 9 guys that came to the plate and everything and said, Wow, this could be a special day parade. My only concern was with the heat and keeping right pitches down as much as we could his number of pitches. And for me attorney point That game really was the fourth inning when right. He only threw five pitches. Yeah, we got which really got you back in the line. For the number for your number of pitches, everything and then it was kind of sailing. Smooth sailing after that, but, um, Stevie Palermo's the home plate umpire. He was one of the best in the league, and I love you. I love him back there. We talked the whole game. And I thought I could have punched him in the ninth inning when he when he had me. Why. Why didn't you tell me drag? You had a no hitter going. He turned to me and said that because the stadium was going crazy. I said, Come on, Stevie. You knew he had a no hitter going cause I swear, Butch, I didn't know I'm thinking back on mine. You son of a gun. You distinct ragged, So Yeah, there's that one to pitching. Sorry that want to pitch. You could've ring him up, but he couldn't do it. He told me I had to earn it. I said, What's that through 150 pitches out here and under? I don't know how hot it was. Figure in that lineup, I said You know what? My brother but you remember when Palermo in the eighth inning, he ran back to the backstop. And I don't know if he ever told you because I never asked him. Did he break his leg or Terrapins? Nique? I know he's definitely got hurt. We got a plane on the ground. Good. I saw that. On the whole I saw that story is Jason after when there was a foul up and he ran after the catcher. He did Tera bisney, and it was actually something he needed surgery for and he would miss it in time. But he stayed in to finish that game. Even with that, and right, I think we all know the late Steve Palermo. I think I gained a lot of respect for him after what happened. And that all Star break incident 1991. I would see him around the ballpark after that, especially in Kansas City will come out and evaluate umpires. He's fun to talk to, but But, boy, I mean, you talk about what you guys had to go through in that heat. You know, it sounds like you had a lot of respect for what he had to do in that situation, too. You go ahead, But I'm gonna say no. You know what I admired about? Tedious. How number one. How much in the game? He always wass you. And if you watched the video and you watch your clothes, you see him behind me and behind Jeff Newman doing a lot of clapping during the game. He was like, Okay. Hello. He was trying to get people moving. For Sunday's game. Neither he was very, very energetic, always on the move. I mean That's why it was so skinny, but yeah, I used to throw knuckleballs back to you, sweetie. Used it. So I said Do I need to catch a knuckleball from you? Give me the damn ball back, please. You know? Hey, I got a funny story. So when that happened, Penelope was the hitter. And he already had a frustrated because he had a couple balls way out The left center and I've been home runs anywhere else, and he he was kicked off. But when he went down and you standing there, Nettles was sit next to me. And he says, Hey, you know what The great part is, he said. What did he goes? Nobody's called him out yet But he goes when Palermo calls about what what is little going to dio, you know, but fortunately loose Eddie because he knew the no hitter was going and it was already a delay. He didn't want to make it even worse. For May toe sit on it. Sit on the bench any longer, but Anyway, Newman did Cats Ball came up with a handful of the popcorn box stuck to his right. Yeah, we're talking with David Getty and Butch Weininger. The battery that combined for the no hitter on July 4th, 1983 Yankee Stadium. Sweeny Murti on the fan here till 11 o'clock, thes 1st 1st inning when you struck out the side of his books, said seven strikeouts over the 1st 3 innings. Did that tell you something about what you had that day day? Was there something specific you were doing? One that helped you get through. Not just there, but set up. Maybe the next couple of turns to the order. Well, you know, they beat our rear ends for two days. I'm Friday and Saturday and I was just trying to get us off to a good start. It's funny years of the next year when they made me a closer Steinbrenner related that to me goes, You know you're always good in the 1st 3 innings. I know what you want me to be bad in the 1st 3 innings said So they turned, you know, they used that against me when they made me a closer But when I back went back to look at that and my ball, Adam moving fast ball, but And I did. I pumped it in there a lot. I did pitch enough a lot like a closer. And so we got in the middle of the game when Bush started calling those change ups and a little bit of curveballs moving, Yeah, that was much better. I enjoyed pitching like that, to be honest, but I had a lot of pressure on me. Believe it or not over the for my 1st 2 years because Everybody fought. How over Calais should pitch. Should I go right at everybody and use my fast bar? Mix it in, So I really had a lot of going on there with Finding myself a pitcher and art barred..

"That use your Bloomberg business flash this is Bloomberg markets with Lisa over on as in Paul Sweeny on Bloomberg radio well I'm trying to understand the significance of this story they came out earlier today the United nation experts now weighing in saying that Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Selmon was possibly involved in hacking the cellphone of Amazon dot com CEO Jeff Bezos this was revealed after an Amazon investigation this has to do with a what's app account that was infiltrated according to investigators back in twenty eighteen Greg feral here to give us a little bit more clarity he's the best the reporter for the legal enforcement team here Bloomberg news great he just sort of set the stage of of what actually is alleged to have happened here well from what we know it is after Jeff Bezos's your photos from his personal life that contribute to or you know a lot you know okay a year ago came out they his team started going through like with a fine tooth comb everything is like a clearly he had been hacked clearly stuff had been stolen from him digital images etcetera from his personal devices so that started the process in addition to that federal prosecutors in New York started looking to see if there is any involvement by the national Enquirer with you know a basically some you know unlawful activity regarding this part of the investigation went through you know chapter and verse every interaction with what the source had and then you know so this it is a criminal investigation in minute happen here separately at the United Nations there are a group of people dedicated to you know justice for extrajudicial killings who've been very focused on the the murder of democracy Shanti in October of of twenty eighteen they got involved with this as well and they're the ones who put out a report today and this is what the news reporting starting late last night indicated is that their findings based on the digital the forensic digital analysis of these as phone indicated lots of evidence that at the time in may of twenty eighteen after a B. nine what's app you know transaction or what's that message from the prince to bees always then suddenly afterwards there was this malignant you know coded file that god and cynical Pegasus which I don't understand I've got was was placed in because his phone and started exfiltrate in massive amounts of data far far larger than the normal amount of data that would normally come in and out of the phone so Greg is there do any sense of what Jeff pesos would like to see happen I mean it looks like I've seen his security was breached and as the Hobbs had implications for him his personal life but as he stated what he wants to happen if in fact the crown prince is guilty of this or did do this no I think right now he's playing this carefully because there is a criminal investigation in New York into some of the context surrounding that it's proceeded very slowly but I think he's smart enough and he's getting the right advice not to get in front of it and decide what he wants to do but to let the you know the most important thing the criminal investigation desiccation proceed is the U. N. investigation somehow implying a connection between the killing of to market Shoghi and the Jeff Bezos hock or the leak of his personal information is that part of it or just was that you have to make their drawing that line they're not there's no proof that this led to that but you know that's what these people at the winner vested getting there they're trying to get to the bottom of how and why you more details and hold those responsible for the killing of Chris shoki so you know it's this is another element to that whole story line that the Saudi government has started denying completely and then denied in part and then found some people find guilty in a trial of sorts a closed around Saudi Arabia earlier this year and when when people staying on this and what's Jeff Bezos's connection to the tomorrow show he can just that because of the work for The Washington Post okay and so over the watch imposed most of the major newspapers and news media in this country have been very supportive of efforts to get to the bottom of this but no one more than the Washington post because he was one of them Greg guesser do we know whether the investigators are looking more broadly or they just looking at Jeff bases are there other prominent people that could be the targets of M. B. S. is it worse the Saudi government's hacking of phones okay SO two things here one we don't know what the prosecutors in Manhattan doing that seems pretty clear it's focused on behalf back in the national Enquirer and whether nothing choir was culpable at all and there's no evidence to suggest there was several you know it's a much bigger question and you've had a very important point now that we know with a high degree of confidence but not absolute certainty that something some part even of was in the crown prince himself but somebody in Saudi Arabia was interested in hacking into a prominent wealthy Americans phone this opens up the question well what other prominent American officials or figures with close ties to the government is the trump administration or Congress or in the business community who did a lot of dealings a and we had a yeah what they thought was a personal relationship what's appellation to put the crown prince or other representatives of Saudi rulers family has anybody else been hacked we just don't know yet so that's that's the bigger issue here is that you know as the Saudi big government been doing this to a wide variety of people and if so who right very interesting fascinating story that I think it's just a developing here Gregg investigative reporter for the legal force the team at Bloomberg news joining us here in a Bloomberg interactive Rooker studio with a fascinating story of Jeff masers The Washington Post the crown prince of Saudi Arabia what's at packing so interesting story so I think this is probably system that's gonna be developing over time I don't think this is the last that yes this of the U. and that panel is coming back with the same conclusion as.

"Is Bloomberg markets with Lisa over on as in Paul Sweeny on Bloomberg radio so we know the US economy is slowing there were three percent growth just a year plus ago now most forecasters are looking for something in the low to mid to percent range but that is still growth and that's still compares very well with a lot of other parts of the world to get an update on kind of fed outlook economic outlook we turn to our next guest David person he's the chief economist at nationwide financial joining us on the phone so David again let's start right there give us your sense for the GDP growth that you are looking for for twenty twenty one of the key drivers and wrist to that well I think you needed light on the on the head and it was probably going to see growth in the low to percent range for the coming year driven in large part by by the consumer and and hopefully no additional decline in business investment spending I think that the the phase one of the trade agreement what will may not encourage businesses to invest in the clinical but but it may lead to get some of their worst concerns can get closer to your phone or something we love to hear what you have to say but we're having a little trouble with the line to maybe can I don't know moving closer or something so you know it's interesting I think we have a lot of questions about what twenty twenty will hold trade is still probably going to be an issue and I do wonder you know will there be a big enough or high enough wall of worry for CEOs that they hold back on spending hold back on hiring hold back and making major decisions you know it's awesome election year and that that somehow contributes to slow down in our economy well I think the concern about trade will cause businesses to hold back just as it did this year I think in the absence of that we probably would have seen another strong year of economic growth that's not a strong pleasure but probably something pretty close to three percent but I don't think that the wall of worries going to get bigger next year so I think we can sort of maintain grow at around two percent maybe just a tad above that for this coming year so interesting David a lot of folks here as we head into twenty twenty are saying as I look at the federation of and as I listen to some of the commentary from chairman pal it looks like if it's gonna be on the sidelines here for the majority of the year how do you kind of you the fed's actions in twenty twenty as it relates to rates and maybe even the balance sheet why is it almost certainly will remain on the sidelines this year unless as as chairman powers said things get either much worse or much better enough we see growth maintaining around two percent we see inflation the tat below the fed's two percent goal I think you said will stay on the sidelines what's important is monetary policy impact the economy with a lag so that part of the slowdown we've seen in the economy this year came about from the hike in interest rates that we saw last year easing that we've seen this year will help the economy next year given that lack that's one of the things that we think will help the economy sustained growth at around at two percent pace it was kind of interesting and it's fun to watch you know I would agree degree in economics and I just think they were at a time to where we kind of question right Paul exam of the economic indicators you know there's no inflation but man I feel like I'm paying a lot more for everything in my life and I'm just curious David specially you know there are a nationwide financial you understand the housing the mortgage markets in is so important what are the economic indicators that you think are the smartest to watch when you really want to understand what's going on in our economy point the most important thing is still the job market people have jobs and they believe their income earning prospects are strong they will spend them with consumer spending two thirds actually will more than that of all spending the economy with the consumer goes the economy is going to go and and of course the real time indicator nearly real time indicator is what's going on with weekly jobless claims and we've had some fluctuations because of the late date of thanksgiving but there's no sign the jobless claims are going up businesses are holding firm to the workers because they can't find a lot of workers who qualified for the jobs they have and I think we will start to see wage growth pick up as a result so look at what's happening happening with wages look at what's happening with jobless claims I think those are both will look pretty good in the coming year so they were just real quickly we did have an inverted yield curve earlier this year for almost four months no recession coffee when twenty twenty you know the risks clearly are higher than they have been I'm one of those who have said in the past you know it's not different this time because it is rarely different this time but we have had occasions with the yield curve has inverted up it and we haven't gone into recession I think this is probably one of those times but the rest have gone up I think the risks are as high as twenty to twenty five percent we get a downturn in twenty twenty but I think at this point with the fed having used certainly quickly in and probably soon enough we won't go into recession next year I really was on that note David person thank you so much chief economist at nationwide financial he's based in Columbus Ohio his company but a course today were funny I'm on the phone in Maryland and I gotta say Paul I think what's interesting is you know you talk about the inversion of the okay that's really was one of the stories but we have definitely seen a steepening the talk you know about recession has really faded I'm really has yeah it really has and I think the when the fed says it's stated dependent you could argue that it with no recession in sight they can you know for to stand aside and a little bit yes we will certainly see what twenty nineteen holder twenty twenty I should say hold for investors ever ever wrap it up a year are you are listening to Bloomberg markets I'm Carol mass along with Paul Sweeny coming up or get a check on the markets for it also take a look at one of the most read stories on the Bloomberg it has to do with tick tock and bite dance we'll get to that in just a moment anytime let's get a check on world and national headlines.

"This is Bloomberg markets would release from as in Paul Sweeny on Bloomberg radio the fed meets today most likely it will be boring that is certainly what they hope but it does set the tone going into twenty twenty when it comes to trying to figure out what credit returns will look like to know what we're joining us now to talk about that had a fixed income and senior portfolio manager at BMO global asset management overseeing two hundred and sixty billion dollars she's normally based in Miami but you want to see what snow look like so she came up here to our interactive brokers studios Janelle I want to start with he's me the outlook for twenty twenty when it comes to credit investment grade debt is poised for its best annual return since two thousand and nine how much further can echo yeah up over fourteen percent this year I think it's somewhat remarkable only look at the total returns we are still very constructive on credit even with valuations rather act going into two thousand and twenty and a lot of this comes back to the positioning the fad accommodation what we've seen out of earnings and some the opportunities that exist within some of that specific quality back to Jimmy here you're still constructive on investment grade debt a lot of folks that we talked to were saying boy were so far into this economic cycle a you know might be too late we might start seeing some concerns about credit quality or something along those lines what kind of the the foundation for your view going to twenty twenty sure a couple different things I think one of the things is that sure there's been a lot of concern about triple bees in particular but as we look at the ratio of upgrades verses downgrade in and out of high yield it's actually five to once we've actually seen credit quality moving higher and the other thing is I think earning surprised flat overall for the year but fairly resilient considering some of the pressures and then with the expectation for earnings growth of ten percent next year even if we see that moderate it should be overall supportive of credit quality so the emphasis is on investment grade over high yield you say any at spreads are pretty tight the extremes that investors earn over page mark rates is about the lowest since last March in more than a year and we're also looking at sort of a questionable outlook in terms of how much further the fed will cut what's going to be driving the returns spread compression or benchmark rates going lower so I I think a little bit of both anger outlook is that rates are really fairly range bound in here so it's largely gonna come from the Kerry of credit as well as some additional tightening I think what gets overlooked when we think about overall what's the what's the option adjusted spread of the index of a hundred is really that dispersion that takes place within investment grade it's a interesting if you move the seven not just from a triple a credit to a high double be you pick up the last thing you move to go from high triple be too although triple be credit and so low triple be credit at one eighty double the yield of the ten year treasury there's some interesting opportunities that have been overlooked for us though this is about allocating within and not just to credit quality and we do acknowledge where we are in the cycle so do you know your titles global asset management head of global asset management globally how are you guys thinking about allocation of your capital into twenty twenty yeah I think we are we we still continue to favor the UMass in terms of the resilience of the overall economy I'm in terms of valuations we go back to that there are some opportunities thing opportunities as we move down in the lower call the spectrum and especially in emerging market died considering our rate outlook going forward we like a flexible approach we think you should all be completely incorporates and we we think that you've got to go again allocating within and not just to specific quality buckets there was a survey that Bloomberg data of global investors that found that the consensus is that emerging market assets will outperform developing markets that developed market ones next year do you agree so I think part of this is just the Kerry where you're starting from so you're starting from a yell that significantly higher and do you have that perpetual income component that supports it so for risk stays flat we're still not returned the there this is so interesting Paul it's sort of this idea that as long as there's nothing major that happens the macro economic backdrop which seems to be the consensus right now it's just a Kerry games or anything he gives you a dividend or anything that gives you interest is going to be pretty good yeah that kind of suggests you kind of the mid single digit kind of return environment so lets it is fed Dade jail let's get your thoughts on what you expect to hear from the fed and from chairman pal today what is your expectations so as far as the move today as far as policy consisting of consensus we don't expect any change in terms of rates I think the part of policy will be focused on is really the for guidance and we'll see that both in the dots as well as the communication I think what we're looking for is an update in terms of economic projections and also what happens if we look at the floor of the dots currently it's really where policy is and so how do those converge over time and how do they still keep the option aliki to be able to act in an intentional way for wired what do you see so far in terms of twenty twenty predictions by some of your competitors that you think is totally wrong I think I think just what we we see the recession peace come down a lot I you know honestly I think that there's going to be a tremendous recovery in some the deepest segments of high yield I think that's one of the pieces of the market that's really surprised we actually see in both emerging market debt and high yield this year so triple sees return five percent investment grade corporate fourteen high yield as a whole double digits there's there's definitely been pockets that have been left out as we've kind of gotten later in the cycle and we've seen this fall out and I think this is interesting am I hearing that you think that the shell patchwork cover with the energy idea is a good one to take that risk we're hearing that we think there are selected there are some eighties now energies been under tremendous pressure this year and that's definitely contributed to both IGN and high yield returns but there are opportunities you know what we're thank you so much for joining us we appreciate you making the trek up from sunny Miami here to New York to know what we're just ahead of fixed income and senior portfolio manager for BMO global asset management it but two and sixty billion dollars under management joining us here in a Bloomberg interactive record studio I mean beautiful beach yes No why why not because honestly this is this is tis the season its reverse migration she made as everybody turns around heading down south for the winter looking at the markets here we are again still quite here headed this fed meeting with the S. and P. up seven the downtown for the nasdaq up a little bit of twenty five points do you think it's going to be boring I do think it's going to be exciting I think that's been a born I think it's gonna be focusing on that fed repo what that's kind of what I want to look for that any solution for the fed report to make it is boring and bill as they possibly can exactly right but will carry it all.

Paul Sweeny Bloomberg fed
