Luther and Difficult Times

"On this episode of five minutes in Church history, we are returning to spend some time with a good friend of ours Martin Luther, and we are looking at Martin Luther. And Difficult Times actually luther had many moments of difficulty in his life. But one of those moments was the peasants revolt of fifteen, twenty, four to fifteen five. Other uprisings in Germany immediately prior to the reformation. But in fifteen, twenty, four to twenty five. This was a much larger insurrection historians estimate that as many as three hundred thousand peasants were involved in this rebellion at various times and in various places. One of the flashpoints for this was in a place called Swabia. Swabia is in southwestern Germany. It's pretty far away from Pittsburgh, a good four hundred or five hundred kilometers or so to the south and slightly West it's down near Munich. It's beautiful country with rivers and. and. Snow. Capped Mountain peaks and fabled castles dotting the landscape in. Swabia is the city of Berg. Will in a few years after this peasants revolt will come into play in a major way and Luther is life. But back in fifteen, twenty, four, fifteen, twenty, five, the peasants in Swabia produced a document called the twelve articles of the peasants in Swabia. It called for in. The list of serfdom they raised various points of contention. and Prince's of the land. It's prefaced with an idea that this is rooted in the Gospel and that their understanding of the application of the Gospel has led them to this. So they published this and this was right in the throes of the peasant rebellion, and of course, the Lord's in the prince's were responding and both sides were claiming luther. Luther was brought into it in fact even the Roman Catholics. Sitting outside of Germany and watching all of this we're blaming Luther for this tumult and for this troubling time in Germany. So Luther responds he writes text that is simply titled a reply to the Twelve articles of the peasants in Swabia. He addresses his thoughts and advice to the peasants. He addresses advice to the nobles and he walk through each of the twelve articles and then he gives a conclusion. To bottom line his advice to the prince's Luther says this for rulers are not appointed to exploit their subjects for their own profit and advantage, but to be concerned about the welfare of their subjects. His bottom line chastisement of the peasants comes a little bit later in his document when Luther says. Preface, that is the preface of their document. You are conciliatory and claim that you do not want to be rebels. You even excuse your actions by claiming that you desire to teach and to live according to the Gospel, and then Luther says your own words and actions condemn you. So Luther was trying to draw attention to both sides of the issues they were having and draw them back to the. Table. So to speak to discuss what Luther says to pursue natural law and to pursue justice and he said to both parties used to do so without assuming that God is on your side and rather just act whether you are Lord or Prince or whether you are a peasant in a way that is keeping with the natural law of God has revealed in the natural order and in the pursuit. Of Justice. So Luther will give us the final word here in a classic statement now dear people there is nothing Christian on either side and nothing Christian is at issue between you. Both Lords and peasants are discussing questions of justice and injustice in natural or worldly terms. Furthermore, both parties are acting against God and are under his wrath as you've heard for God's sake. Then take my advice take A. Hold of these matters properly with justice and not with force or violence and do not start endless bloodshed in Germany for because both of you are wrong and both of you want to avenge and defend yourselves. Both of you will destroy yourselves and God will use one rascal to flog another.

"This is native America calling I'm Tera Gatewood. Many native artists are taking part in this year Santa, fe Indian market even though this is the first time, it's happening only online. Usually the streets of Santa Fe are packed with artists and art enthusiasts, but like nearly every large public event in the country, the in person gathering is deemed to be too risky because of the coronavirus pandemic organizers of the Southwestern Association of Indian Arts or Had A different plan. They decided to take things online in addition to artists selling their work, their other popular parts of the market. There are still taking place including the fashion segment. We'll hear more about things have gone online in this hour, and we'll also hear from native artists about how they are reacting to the coronavirus and the threat to the economy. in also events like this, we have two guests who are participating in the virtual market in two that decided to sit out, but you are also welcome to join us to if you are in need of artists who's looking to attend. This year Santa Fe Indian market. What are your plans now go ahead and give us a call. Are you watching what is going on online? You can share your thoughts. Anybody is welcome to join us. We really hope we hear from artists, today your thoughts, and maybe even how the pandemic has changed. The way you do work again, if you WANNA join us one, eight, hundred, nine, six, two, eight, four, eight is the number that's also one. Eight, hundred, nine, nine, native today we're starting off in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We have Kim Pian. She is executive director of Swabia, and she is from the Komo Colleville confederated tribes an eastern band of. Indians our pleasure to have her here. Kim Welcome. Thank you Tara. In Kim this is definitely a different year for Santa Fe Indian market, and tell us a little bit about how we are How things moved into this point of having a virtual market. Go ahead, share your story. Sure So this scenario when hired force, why and April it was April fifteenth. The board had already cancelled the Santa Fe Indian market, and at that time there was definitely a vetting process that was occurring on what are the options regarding virtual and so I came on board and evaluated what those options look like and within a two week period. We quickly pivoted and began to start that journey regarding a virtual Indian market. In Sioux, when you present this market in a lot of times people pay attention to the numbers. In India, market has been taking place close to a hundred years. What is this when labeled as and also people who are covering this? What's the proper way to term the virtual market? Is it the ninety ninth or something else? It's actually. I get asked that question a lot. It's a ninety eight and a half. Because they had made the decision to make next year, the ninety ninth year in our centennial will be in twenty, twenty two. In. So with that, tell me about the ritual market, what is it and what happens? Yeah. So it was definitely This is for us has been very tiered approach of how we were doing this. So first.

"As Swabia Americaine federally listed species. Hemi parasitic species that occurs in Longley Fan. It's one of these species that grows on the echo thome so between the land and some of our depression wetlands here in the southeast. It's very rare not many populations of it remaining. I think South Carolina as most of the populations that are extent but it will bloom after fire Usually don't see it unless you burn the area and then you see these flowering stalks coming up but a lot of our species are induced to flowering by fire but the system really does need fire in order to thrive in. So if you don't burn it the system becomes something else becomes a mixed pine hardwood forest. That is not going to have that open. Herbaceous ground cover that is so iconic in so typical for lovely systems and so we do a lot of work in trying to change people's perspectives on fire. And so I think you made a really good point is if you don't have prescribed fire and you're not using fire as a management tool. It's not a matter of if it's going to burn is just a matter of win and how it's GonNa burn and so we feel like if you're managing these systems properly with fire on a regular basis than you can somewhat not control but you know have more influence over the narrative and how and how things end up so We feel like with prescribed. Fire if you're using it properly than you're going to be reducing your wildfire risk in addition to supporting the ecosystem but in terms of the relevance to human populations That wildfire risk is really important and so We encourage people to use that fire. Because in the southeast we're fire system here you know fire region and so we try to minimize those risks as much as possible and so we obviously want to teach Currently in owners is and Get MORE LANDOWNERS. Involved with burning on their properties because a lot of land owners are fearful of applying fire because of liability concerns in that kind of thing but there are a lot of really neat programs going on now in terms of setting up prescribed burn association so these are groups of landowners who get together. They share resources. They share knowledge. They work with some of the local agencies and prescribed. Fire people to really learn how to do it properly safely and be able to of lean on each other to do that which I think is really helpful there. Lots of learning burn workshops that are that are popping up all over the southeast as well which really do a great job in training private landowners. How to burn? Because that's kind of that's so aerobic limitation is people just don't know what to do and so being able to teach them and certify them to go out and use fire on their lands is important the other piece of it is just really changed training the next generation so teaching Kids that that fire is good. So there's a difference between good iron bad fire and so- applying good fire is really beneficial to like said that it gives systems but the whole community as a whole. It's important and to kind of deal. Give a little push back to to smokey bear. Smokybear has shifted. Its message so now. It's you know can prevent wildfires instead of forest fires so that's good but one of our board members has created a character named Burner Bob. Any Bob Light Quail and he is a prescribed fire advocate. And so it's a neat Character to us with our next generation educational materials who got coloring books and stickers and t shirts and all these other other outreach materials that were distributing to people and really teaches about a prescribed fire and how prescribed fire is important for critters like Bob White Quail and his friends gopher tortoises and RC WS and wild turkeys and such so. It's it's a neat tool. We've really enjoyed working with him. We take him to festivals all over the southeast and really try to get the message out. That good fire is a good thing that we should be using more of it on the landscape. Gosh love that you could not have picked a better mascot few things warm my cold heart like a Bob Way Quail. I mean just hearing their calls brings Blake makes me misty. I love it yes. Yep He's his nate and his really cute. So it's nice to have like have cute mascots wonderful and so thinking about these private land owner holdings and that's a big component of any successful conservation effort anywhere in the world but especially in this continent because most land is tied up in private holdings. It's not in parks. It's not in nature preserves and it would be great in idealistic to think of all of these wonderful restoration efforts going on in protected areas. That will never be logged. But that's just not the reality of the system people own the land. They're making money off of timber and and really would can be a great sustainable resource if done correctly. So it's really encouraging to see organizations like the LONGLEAF alliance working with private landowners not excluding forestry from the conversation because again. It's such a huge part of the economy. It's such an important livelihood for people but it can be done so much better. And that's all part of what you're trying to do. Correct that is correct and so private landowners are a key part of this whole initiative to increase Longleaf Here in the southeast the majority of our lands is in private ownership and so we want to be able to include those private landowners in this lonely frustration effort and private landowners. In many cases Need to earn some income off their land and so having a working forest. Is I think really important especially for your private landowner and it's not exclusive from supporting the ecosystem so you can have a working forest and you can also be supporting our CW's and gopher tortoises You have to go at it with a different mindset and so Looking at you know using different civil cultural techniques like uneven aged management to really be able to pull products from the land while at the same time still maintaining habitat so we work with private landowners of all shapes and sizes from small ownerships to thousands and thousands of in ownership. It's important for each one of those landowners to be able to get something from the land but at the same time they're all very dedicated to maintaining the habitat so we we try to work with landowners to kind of guide them on that path in terms of the stewardship that they apply to their lands in order to maximize that lonely frustration for the long term. It's the only way I could see something like this. Truly being successful into kind of circle back to what you had mentioned earlier as I really love that idea of starting with okay. You want this plantation. You WanNa grow good sturdy trees start with fire start managing it it's about management and then letting the kind of pieces fall into place and letting them make the connections like Oh. I noticed this year that these flowers came up. How can I keep this going arm? Really interested these birds suddenly appeared. You know it's kind of letting them take their own path throughout the experience but always couching it in this idea of ecosystem health and a working forest that like you said can both earn new capital but also be a functioning ecosystem at the same time I think. These conversations are so often missing from conservation efforts. Yeah we don't take the tack that we come in and basically dictate to landowner what they need to do. are gonNA premise on how we apply technical assistance outreach for landowners as we listen to the landowner we figure out what their objectives are What's important to them and we help. Guide them through that process trying to come up with a management management recommendations that will help them achieve those those outcomes but at the same time we want to present them with as much information as possible in terms of ecosystem restoration because I mean at the core that's our mission is to ensure a sustainable future the lonely pint ecosystem. But that doesn't mean that you are not going to be able to harvest timber from your land or anything like that. So there's a way to basically combine all of that into one plan moving forward with your land and so it's important not to dictate to a land owner. You need to listen to them. Work with them to guide them on the Best Path. Forward in order to achieve their their long term. Goals and private landowners are really important. Because if you look at the numbers of acres that are established each year with Planting of LONGLEAF comparing private lands to public lands privately and far outnumber the public land in terms of LONGLEAF establishment. And so we like to work with these private landowners guiding them on that process so that they can start out on the right foot and set up those management practices that will encourage a long-term healthy forest. Yeah for sure and really encouraging to hear stories about these burn groups getting together. You're almost building communities centered around sort of ecosystem stewardship in management. But it's it's getting people together. It's it's trading ideas it's building community in. That's really good across the board. I mean it's not again this idea of while. Humans are the problem which is get rid of him in. Ignore them and write them off. It's it's embracing the fact that we're here we're GONNA be here to stay. We're GONNA make money on this place You know and that's that's just inevitably our society set up but we can work within those bounds to be better at what we're doing Absolutely yeah it's like you know with this property management. You're also GONNA have more wild Turkeys on on your property. More wildlife so a lot of our landowners are hunters obviously and so Encouraging that healthy wildlife habitat it provides them with recreation opportunities as well so you know it might not just be income but there could be other benefits to a landowners. You have to kind of figure out what's valued by that landowner to help them reach that in goal right and so beyond thinking about just land owners. I mean other people can get involved in the LONGLEAF alliances mission here. What are some ways that even non land owners can get involved or help support Longley frustration efforts of yet. Thank you for asking that We are a membership organization. Longleaf alliance And you can join as a member at different levels. We have individual memberships. We have corporate memberships agency memberships. We have you know lot of variety there in terms of how you can help support the LONGLEAF alliance. You could also volunteer. So there are tree planting opportunities around the southeast popping up from time to time so get involved with that Get involved with a local group. That's doing longleaf restoration. But we would love to have you get involved with Longley Flights. However you are able. I encourage everyone to check out the LONGLEAF alliance website so that's Longleaf Alliance Dot Org and you can learn more about longleaf lonely ecosystem but also about the LONGLEAF alliance itself and the work that we.

"Cucumber and fruit and protein powders and hemp powder and to Merrick and ginger root. And that's about it in one. I think. Oh you're speaking my language. That's all I do that. At least once a day sometimes twice a day and then in the middle of the day juice beet juice and cucumber and celery. Because those are all good for the stomach and gut health in the gut. Health helps me because they're seeing that rheumatoid arthritis also lives in the gut. Day are now finding a just to interject a little tidbit of information here. That inflammation as the number one leader to all disease and it starts in the gut. So if our gut is inflamed we're going to be inflamed everywhere else in the body. I wholeheartedly believe that. Yes with something I learned from Dr Young Phone actually He's one of the first one started meal nut. Yeah Oh they're one hundred percent now you said earlier and we're GONNA continue with your protocol here and we're GonNa because I want to finish on that. You said anybody who wants to know specific things from they can email you and I want our audience to know that email is one more thing b. y. g. at gmail.com so you're going to get flooded with emails now But it's one more thing does one for the record. I'm not a doctor so I can give you medical advice of any type. I will give you my personal experience over twenty five years of research and practice. That's amen that's all we can do. Okay continue. We've got to juices that? We've done now our smoothies to smoothies that the one in the morning and usually when the evening sometimes I skipped when the evening but most of the time. Not because the THA Merrick actually talking about a thousand milligrams a day so as five hundred in the morning five hundred new evening if I'm having a slight flair because I still have the disease that is not curable which is manageable. If I'm having a flare up that new three three a day but the beet juice in the celery and Greens that I do. Those are also kind of heart healthy so like do a beat salary. Greens cucumber in a juice juice. Where I gotTa extractor fat so I do those knee like an afternoon and sometimes in the early evening and those are kind of heart healthy stuff so keep that the way supposed to be an keeps my gut healthy. Yes it end. The aside from that would be the other herbs that are us or Krill oil K. R. I. L. L. and take two thousand milligrams of Krill oil a day and that's an anti inflammatory. It's heart healthy. It actually attacks the rheumatoid nice. It helped my joint stay healthy pain. Keep away and it keeps the inflammation down so a thrill all of this all of your injury. Your surgeries your recovery's. You've never taken pain medication. Correct very rarely I mean even now I the one of the urban. I'd take a bow Swabia as well as a natural anti-inflammatory in it's similar to prednisone right. But it's a natural former apprentice on no side effect of it so when I was in the hospital the first time and the second time and the third time I actually the first time get an argument with the chief surgeon of the hospital because the nurses kept coming in trying to give me Vicodin and I kept saying I really don't need it. Thank you so much I woke up I had to take one and then I think about noon ish or something I took one and then I believe the second in the third surgery by the time out of the hospital of his own. No vicodin whatsoever and even when I was there they were recommending two Vicodin. Every four hours. They were coming in with one every six or seven so and that was only for the first day Second Day it was down I think to during the daytime and then the third day I was known them at all. Immolate him home. I didn't take bike. And after that at all so no narcotics whatsoever then my wife did give me occupied church. That used to be known on taught my wife how to do architecture. Why thinks there's some daring natural ways that we can support our body to fight that inflammation and you know support the pain without putting narcotic in our system where exactly in to golfers my surgeon by the way rubber golf fantastic orthopedic surgeon with his staff? Clara his visions assistant and I were discussing the fact that I had healed up so quickly. 'cause I do follow with her in. She attributed to lot of that to number one the Vegan lifestyle and number two that I wasn't taking any narcotic So typically the people are on Connex. It takes them longer to recover longer for the rehabilitation throat. So in my case again I I was released. The first one was five weeks or six weeks. Second was five weeks. Five weeks nice early from rehabilitation. Yeah and that alone is saw inspiring to be able to know that you know? There's things that we can do to support so as we come to wrap up here tell us I wanna get into kind of our minds that we've been talking about the things that we do as a protocol and we've got an email out there but mentally because I believe that deliver toxin free lifestyle. There's five pillars of mental as one of them. What did you do to support yourself mentally because a lot of this stuff had to been devastating? We talked about the anger that you went through. But can you give us? You know some of the tips. Maybe the top three things that were just beneficial for you. I would say that if you're in this position or any other position and actually just day-to-day stress learn meditation. Meditation is extremely beneficial. It helps you to focus. It helps you to relax. You can lower your heart rage. You can lower your blood pressure. You can get peace of mind if you start stressing out. Meditation is key and you can do it for a minute day in any situation. You can do it for thirty minutes a day if you have time. But Meditations a key factor in tact so. That's the first thing that I would recommend. Second thing is is that don't necessarily take the first answer because there's always another answer. There's another way if somebody tells you WanNa be careful with this. If you were told that you can't I in Asia look deep inside yourself in your mind in your heart your body and your soul and say that I can and you need to have the self confidence in the ability within yourself to be able to confirm dead you have the ability to change your life for a positive way.
