"Here's one of the videos of women at the forefront of protest in Belarus. They hoped flowers and gather weekly in defiance of President Lukashenko's crackdown. Olympic athlete. Levchenko managed to leave Belarus for Greece, but one of her cell mates was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for trying to tear off a policeman's balaclava at a protest. It's like that time you just realized that you they're not because you did something, it's not there because you committed a crime you there because you fighting for freedom and And this is the spirit of people. I mean, I was so amazed, the WN Ba center told her story at an online event hosted by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security. It's run by former ambassador at large for global women's issues. Milan Verveer, the face of what is happening in Belarus is largely the face of women. Unexpected in a region largely male dominated consistently certainly in politics on and the struggle I think needed to be spotlighted the protests continue, though key leaders of the opposition have been jailed or forced into exile. It's the kind of Story real life that is happening in our world that I think we need to know about here about on act on State Department officials have met with the woman many believe won the elections. Svetlana Tikhonov Sky up Congress recently weighed in with legislation to support the protesters. But Veer says President Trump's effort to overturn his own election loss has tarnished America's image. I think it does not just Undermine our credibility but our ability to promote democratic values to promote democracy to be what we have always claimed to be. Still, the women of Belarus are looking to the U. S for support, and they have high hopes for President elect Biden, according to activists Natalia Qaeda of the Belarus Free Theater. Protesters clash with police in Belarus after Lukashenko sworn in again

"To Belarus, where protests continue a month and a half after a presidential election and election, the U. S and its European allies say was neither free nor fair. Now the country's long time leader, Alexander Lukashenko, has been inaugurated for 1/6 term in a secret ceremony. NPR's Lucien Kim reports from Moscow on Wednesday morning Alexander Lukashenko's motorcade's race down Independence Avenue in the Belarussian capital Minsk. He entered the presidential residence filled with hundreds of his loyalists. The inauguration had not been announced, and no foreign delegations, not even from Russia. Lukashenko's strongest backers, Lukashenko took the oath of office with his right hand on the constitution, swearing to serve the Belarussian people. Whether they still want to be served by him is another question. Lukashenko's claimed have 1 80% of the vote in August presidential election sparked weeks of protests and a brutal police crackdown on demonstrators condemned by human rights organizations. Lukashenko's main opponent, Svetlana Tekin. Oska called the inauguration ceremony a farce and said she was the only leader chosen by the Belarussian people. The Russians again took to the streets rat. You're fired, demonstrators chanted in the town of breast and video shared widely on social media. Lukashenko has angered many Belarussians by calling peaceful protesters. Rats.

Belarus' Post-Election Crackdown

"Nearly 7000 people have been detained in Belarus after protests erupted on Wednesday. This follows the presidential election results that came over the weekend. Several demonstrators who were arrested have sense accused the government of torture. Jen, What's going on? Why are people upset? Well, so this basically kind of started going back a little bit before this election, so they had an election on Sunday. But a little bit. Before that there were some protests going on and Is a lot of had to do with Alexander Lukashenko and his he's the president and his kind of failure more long term in terms of the economy in terms of managing the Corona virus. But then there was this election coming up. And because Lukashenko he's been in power for 26 years now. He was basically elected in the first, you know, nationwide Democratic elections in the country. After you know, they declared independence from the Soviet Union. It was the first nationwide really free and fair election. It was also the last nationwide free and fair election. Hey, has since then consistently crackdown on all forms of opposition. He's rigged all the elections to make sure he stays in power. And this coming up election that was coming up this past Sunday. He was planning to do the same thing. He detained the opposition. You know, the key opposition leaders. But he didn't factor in that there was basically a homemaker, a woman named Svetlana ticking off scale. She's a 37 year old former English translators stay at home Mom. She's also the wife of one of the lead opposition figures who was detained and she said, Okay, fine. You want to arrest my husband? Then I'll run for president in his stead. And she took to the streets and basically said, You know, I'm not gonna let this happen. She basically helped unite the opposition and thousands and thousands and thousands of people came out to the streets in support of her. In a way that had not been seen basically in its entire post Soviet history on DH. Then, of course, the election was rigged. As expected, she, you know, contested the results. She ended up having to fleet of Lithuania she was feared for her Children's lives. But people are angry and they're back in the streets in the thousands and tens of thousands and true to form, Lukashenko's government is again cracking down brutally and trying to repress it. Well, Courtney, we got this message from Dave, who says the situation is so fluid. How will the US respond to Lukashenko's efforts to be seen to be looking for a political solution where he still stays in power? Well, General. I mean, the U. S. Has already said that they don't believe these were free elections. We heard that from Mike Pompeo just this week, and the EU has said that I mean, pretty much the entire international community has condemned these elections. It's interesting because this comes at a time when you there have been terrible relations between the US and Minsk for years. In fact, In. Lukashenko has been under sanctions by the U. S. Since 2006 after another round of election irregularities, so knows general saying free and fair elections that have been a thing of the past. In It has been a thing of the past there. But earlier this year in February, Mike Pompeo became the highest ranking administration official to visit there. In years. He went to Minsk. He met with Lukashenko in April. The administration nominated ambassador for the country, Julie Fisher, would be that she would have been the first ambassador there in more than a decade and actually just went up for her confirmation about a week ago. But now it looks as if there are some people on the hill who are saying while we need to hold up this nomination, If we send a diplomat there, it would appear that this is an endorsement of the crackdown. There are others who think well, if ever there's a time that we need someone there Help advocate for democracy. It's now but it looks as if that nomination is held up. So what's interesting is this All comes at a time where there really was this effort, toe warm ties between Washington and Minsk, and now it looks as if once again, Lukashenko going back to his ways of Trying to rigging an election of really maintaining his title as one of Europe's last remaining dictators that may end up destroying any chance for some kind of riel. Diplomatic relations between the two countries. Well, David on Thursday, thousands of women wearing white flooded the streets to protest that violent crackdown on demonstrators that happened during the week of protests. What comes next in Belarus. Well, it's going to be obviously down to developments inside batteries but also kind of slightly grubby great power politics because how his Alexander Lukashenko survives the dictator of this country. Just on the 10 million people for 26 years. It's part because he has been incredibly adept at playing the West and Russia off against each other. So he's taking a lot of money. Over the years from Russia, he has had Vladimir Putin as a patron of last resort, but he is also Occasionally flirted with Europe in first with us because he doesn't want to be taken over wholesale by Russia. China is also a player. President Xi Jinping of China was the first major leader to congratulate Alexander Lukashenko on this kind of grotesquely rigged election as though it was a perfectly good election. China is poured money into Belarus. It's one of its hubs Fishy Jinping's Bolton Road project, so This kind of constant playing back and forth. But the problem is that he is running a road because if he gives the European Union what they want, which is for him to liberalize on back down from crushing these process. You'll probably get swept

Belarus Election: Svetlana Tikhanovskaya Flees Country Amid Protests

"The leader of the opposition in Belarus, Atlantic sky has fled the country to neighboring Lithuania following. Sunday's presidential election in Belarus protests have continued in the country following the election results in which the country's longstanding President Alexander Lukashenko claimed a landslide victory with some eighty percent of the vote. A result opposition claims was rigged Chris Show Max Fat Lana. Posted an emotional video to supporters explaining why she'd fled the country predominantly she said to ensure the safety in the well being of her children she ran for the presidency in place of her husband. Of course, Sergei T Shanansky who we know is in prisoner political charges in Belarus what's the latest reaction from other countries around batteries speed looking on at the fallout from the election on Sunday Chris well. The reaction has been one of, of course, criticism of the vote that took place and calling for calm in terms of how Belarus Belarus majorities should deal with protests. The European Union, which you know is argued be key of course, the EU and the US have criticized the vote but the E is is particularly key with Belarus being you know sort of between the European Union and Russia if you will. In terms of the spheres of influence, and there has been some talk of renewed sanctions from the EU. A lot of that sanctions talk interestingly is coming from Poland while the on another side neighbor Hungary's against sanctions. So it'll be interesting to see what kind of developments come from the EU in terms of what they can actually do to try and to try and influence anything that is happening in Belarus. The irony is that the EU actually lifted many of its sanctions back in two thousand sixteen ended asset freezes and travel bans against Lukashenko and about one hundred and seventy other people. The decision at that point looking back was actually unanimous among foreign ministers they cited improving relations. With Belarus although an arms embargo was still kept in place a certain amount of sanctions. So not everything was. Returned to normal. But there for the question now is could the e U reintroduced those kinds of sanctions that it had in the past on targeted individuals including Liquor Shaneco the question is whether this will really have any major effect was under Lukashenko has not been particularly interested in joining the e U along running sanctions already in place you know were put in place after the disappearance of opposition politicians way back at the turn of the Millennium gives you a sign of how long this has been. Has Been going on. so that you could try to react with further sanctions, but it has tended in some ways to see as in Russia's sphere of influence perhaps in terms of Russia. Putin was of course, quick to recognize the results. will be watching closely. You would imagine if anything near what amounts to a revolution starts to to come about in Belarus but the there has been also some talk from analysts saying, of course, they may favor a certain amount of instability if it helps to keep Belarus under wraps as it were an in Russia's sphere for the time being

"Am six forty live everywhere in the I heart radio app in a few weeks we come to the point of the program where we bring in the mob members led by Svetlana to throw a hack in a dumpster somebody that pops up in the news this week or last week that we decide just has to be thrown in the dumpster thanks to a Ukrainian mob who did that several years back we saw the video thought we gotta do that on the show every week we picked up on the insanity in Ukraine way ahead of everybody else way ahead of trump and Biden the way we did bring this Ukrainian a politician's thrown in the dumpster wearing his suit at and and then they dumped water on his head is beautiful we thought this is what our happened here in America remember only through his briefcase into but yeah he got out and they threw him back in yes and the since it we were colonel Ukrainians but Serbs we have French we have Donald Trump loving Serbs also the French shell of esters the Turkish body guards Turkish bodyguards the Polish you built Donald Trump said tower right even a good Polish and the this week because you know we have this corona virus scare all of the mob members are wearing safety masks well that's a good idea are they wearing the special respirator man yes they are they are they are they are well educated as to what they need to prevent catch from these politicians that we throw in the dumpster well right and it was Wednesday night when we had the first debate between Jackie Lacey the LA county district attorney and her quote progressive opponents they debated each other like a month ago but it's Jackie Jackie didn't go it's George Casco who comes from San Francisco and listen to this he was the DJ of San Francisco he was appointed by mayor Gavin Newsom January twenty eleven to fill the vacancy left by the departing Camelot Harris and that's important because I've heard people when you criticize San Francisco and you say well that's Gavin Newsom city they say no now all the degradation happened after Newsome left knoll the degradation is because Newsome made the gasket on the district attorney and Gascon stopped prosecuting crimes and got prop forty seven passed which meant that the most down a lot of felonies drug felonies and theft felonies would become misdemeanors the prisons are the work emptied out by Jerry Brown one of those prisoners went to the local jails so nobody was arrested anymore for misdemeanors because there's no room in the jails so that's why you have all the drug addicts in the street and that's why they still so much stuff in order to finance their red drug habits and this came from gas bones mine he wrote the bell is the single most destructive politician in terms of quality of life among all of them in California and he's coming here to be the DNA that yes so outrageous he started his career as an LAPD assistant chief apparently his mother still lives in southern California so it's not exactly a carpet bagger situation he had lived here before he went up to San Francisco to take that posted Gavin Newsom gave him but if you listen to him he does have an accent and I just found out he was born in Havana Cuba that's where he's from I was given he's Cuban right well it does but he hit his his terribly destructive ideas and by the way he had his chance alright we tried prop fourteen now for five years yeah the only fourteen it passed yeah so it's been over five years and look what happened so I have and that is the most disastrous proposition even Garcetti says it's a contributor to the veteran by the way you know what the big lie was you know you know why the title of it on the ballot was a lot of people just read the title the safe neighborhoods and schools act yes dad safe neighborhood in schools act like to all the homeless and all the drug addiction and all the fast and the burglaries and the and the the the car theft that goes on and the shoplifting that goes on it's all from gas guns tiny little brain now come March third when there is a statewide primary in the most attention will be paid to the presidential race specially among the Democrats here in California will also be on the ballot if you live in LA county is this vote for DNA Jackie Lacey took over for Steve Cooley and is pretty much carried on what we thought was a pretty good prosecution record we had a little difference with Herman what was going on at USC but for the most part I don't think there's anything wrong the only county DA's office what we see here and nationwide is this movement and we've talked about it before George Soros the progressive wealthy guy is backing attempts in many cities and counties throughout the country two one seat what the progressive think is people who were too tough on law enforcement and send too many people to present a want to send or death row they don't want to send anybody to prison they don't send anybody to death row is to incarceration than we do you think these terms came from we've laughed about them but you know how they call it the no longer called a fella just call him a returning resident there is of someone who is been experience with the criminal justice system this it came from this crowd they're trying to get the media and all of us to change the way we describe things they have a well funded national organization that finds candidates funds the candidates creates the talking points and the arguments to dismantle the justice system as we know it they're doing it actively in San Francisco you look at what San Francisco's doing now I mean the other day there was a there was a guy had a cop in the head with a bottle the the the the criminals not being charged he hit a cop in the head there's no question he did it they did a there everybody soccer chess abode Boden Yahoo Q. Q. is a public defender and in fact one of Jackie laci's opponents not George Gaston is actually a public defender another of the candidates I mean that's what we all right now public defenders gonna take over the top prosecution offices in cities and counties are you kidding me that that's how bad this is become because their viewpoint is John just said is nobody should go to prison so must figure a way out of this I think most people disagree strongly with whatever the San Francisco DA is doing and what gas con represents but you have to vote and you can't be fooled by the fakery why everybody got fooled by the safe neighborhood in schools act you got you got you got con stand so you have to vote and you have to be aware of what and who you're voting for it's all good that's gonna tries to cover this up by going racism racism racism and that's a cover story yeah that's the view point of the progressives that the whole system is racist and we have to unravel it but there was Troy it's a real thing is they'll stop prosecuting everybody they didn't know but nobody's going to jail in the driveway and.

"Internet technologies. It was at universities where I finally got access via interpreters and captions but even with interpreters I could not understand them in the beginning because I didn't know American sign language even though I knew written English well so I had to learn American sign language as my fifth language in order to be able to use sign language interpreters the majority of deaf and hard of hearing people don't know sign language. Rely more on captions. That's how I learned about. TV captions and eventually live have captions and became a consultant. In that area. I also didn't have access to information on TV. When growing up until I was around fifteen years old this episode is brought to you by cloud ways? Are you facing performance and security issues or launching your ambitious project with with wordpress look no further outweighs has got you covered there. Aw including cloud providers like Digital Ocean Amazon web services and Google cloud and you can quickly and easily get up and running with your wordpress this website without the need to be a Sys admin you get a CDN skill ability staging and backups. Out of the box. I recently set up a wordpress website website on aws with cloud ways and it was by far the easiest experience I ever had with. Aws Cloud ways works as an extended did team for individuals and businesses handles all of the server management and. Let's focus on building amazing website for your ever-growing business if you like like what you've heard start with a three day free trial of cloud ways now and don't forget to use the Promo Code H. I. V.. I two zero for for a free twenty dollar hosting credit head over to how I built dot it slash cloudy today. I've always wondered how different the American sign language is from. Well Non American sign language. And I guess it's very dependent on the spoken language is that accurate. Asl S. L. is totally different from Russian sign language just like spoken languages are different. ASL is even different from British sign language and even more different than American. Doc in English is different from British English. I can understand both American and British English but I cannot understand British sign language and their finger. Spelling is is also different from Finger Spelling and ASL finger spelling and uses two hands while finger spelling and L. involves one hand. Well I they had no idea I know most of the alphabet in Asl and can definitely spell my own name. But I just assumed that since it's the same letters it's the same signs no finger spelling and ASL is totally different from finger spelling and Bso good to know so now before we get back to Tekken can accessibility. I'm curious do you think that you had access to more services here. In the United States and his services the correct term because of the government regulations relations here in the United States generally. Yes but even here we still have to fight for access despite the ADA Americans with disabilities act being around for almost thirty years. It was passed in nineteen ninety. Sadly many businesses violate laws and there is an increasing number of lawsuits. Lately I have never understood why some and businesses would try to fight for exemptions from laws instead of investing into accessibility. From the beginning people with disabilities make up the largest and most ignored word minority of over one point three billion of people in the world. This is the market size of China. Well I have seen some of that myself. My mom is wheelchair bound and luckily these days perhaps due to lawsuits many places are accessible but a good example is my old apartment complex. My mom couldn't come come visit me because I was on the third floor of the apartment complex and I had no elevator. Yes it's hard if there are older buildings that make it hard to be accessible but there are also many different solutions. One thing I wanted to add is that there are specific terms. That disabled people don't like like wheelchair-bound rebound many wheelchair users don't feel they are bound to wheelchairs. They treat wheelchairs as tools that help them move independently. Well thank you you for that clarification. I'll keep it in for the lesson. My mom doesn't seem to mind and uses the term herself so I didn't really think much of it but thank you so let's get back to the very big number you mentioned as we wrap up here. There's a big benefit to being accessible aside from the fact that you should or your require two and that is more visitors or attendees people coming to your events can you give us a general idea of Roi or attendance improvement for or accessible events and content. I wanted to share some irony as a foreign born myself. I noticed that people try to help me with translation from the English to Russian even though I know English well because it's easier for them to use spoken language than to communicate with me in writing so I feel. They are resistant when I asked them under right down in English yet some who know Russian are trying to translate to me from English to Russian. I have no problem speaking Russian if it's not part of translation and so it's frustrating when non-disabled people seem to be more willing to help non-disabled foreigners with translations even without any prior request while we deaf people people are frustrated with resistance from non disabled people when we ask them for same language captioning access or sign language interpreters especially when it comes to interacting with disabled people people in their own country besides accessibility benefits everyone and not just people with disabilities or example wheelchair ramps and elevators benefit benefit parents with baby strollers captions benefit people in noisy environments voiceover benefit people. Who want to listen to books while traveling and so on as a parent of two year old yes to ramps and elevators? But you're right. I know several people who enjoy the show because we have transcripts and they prefer or to read instead of listen yes agreed. So you've provided lots of great information today and on top of wonderful story but I do need to ask you my my favorite question. Do you have any trade secrets for us. I don't think I have any to share. I think making things accessible is not a secret I love it. Thanks so so much for joining me today. Where can people find you? Hey everybody and welcome to another episode of how I built at the podcast that asks. How did you build that today? My guest is spent. Lana who's she is being voiced by Aaron Casabona. My wife because at Lana is deaf and she is a user experience and accessibility consultant. That helps people make their their products media and events accessible. So we're going to start with the interview now as it was typed out in Google. Docs we're going to read this verbatim. Aaron are you ready to go. I'm ready all right. Hi Lana thanks for joining me on the show today. Why don't you tell us a little bit about who you are and and what you do? I Love Joe thanks for having me. I'm an independent consultant specializing in user experience and accessibility. I work with business. Owners media producers corporations event organizers and educational institutions to help them make their products services and events user friendly and accessible all. I'm also a founder of audio accessibility and provide consulting and training to media an event producers on how to make high quality captioning Xinning and other types of communication access for media and events. I'm an international speaker and author of a book. Sound is not enough captioning running as universal design. It's currently undergoing the second edition last year. I gave a tax talk about captioning access and I'm based in the NYC area. Great so I'm a big participant in the wordpress community and there's been a big focus on accessibility over the last few two years especially with the latest version of wordpress and the new editor. I've also been getting transcripts of my show done for the past three years and I've seen a big jump jump in audience since launching them. Is this something you find is common the more accessible a website podcast or event the bigger the audience well wordpress events became more accessible. Because of my initiatives originally they were not accessible. So I started advising organizers in NYC about how to make them accessible via interpreters and captions. I also gave three presentations one local in NYC at a meet up and one at a word Camp NYC and one at a Word Camp USA without my initiatives. I don't know if they would be accessible or maybe would have become become accessible later. Also there editor has accessibility problems and I hear stories of how Accessibility Folks resigned because Gutenberg was published without accessibility. Eddie Considerations Gotcha. So you've actually helped bring live captions and interpreters toward camps and they're generally at every event now. Yes and I'm glad. More event organizers are following my advice and recommendations I also have a team of captures providing live captions at events and off line nine captions and transcripts for videos and podcasts. Can you talk a little bit about the importance of having these services available to event and online content when planning events it's important that not just events themselves be accessible but also to make event websites and event recordings accessible. It's a huge project that will benefit from services of inexperienced consultant. That's also why event organizers contact me for consulting to ensure that all bases are covered and that there's a budget ready to cover accessibility expenses. It's also important to plan events accessibility as early as possible. Not Close to the start of an event I I know. That budget is often in concern for both events and podcasts for example I didn't have transcripts for the first year or so of this show because I couldn't really really afford it. Do you have any advice. For folks. As far as Costco's either through getting funding or doing things on a shoestring budget. I would say that. Accessibility is is not charity and is a cost of doing business. Like with any business expenses you will need to consider return on your investment if people can spend on other things things like advertising or renting venue or hiring certain specialists spending on accessibility. Expenses is different. You would need to have experts to help you with accessibility accessibility in the same way. You hire experts to help you with other things. Gotcha I think that's a great point especially on. Roi and other event costs if we look specifically at podcasting or creating videos for a minute. Those are pretty cheap to do a pick up a microphone recording. So what tips do you have for those those folks. Anyone can do transcripts captions but for formal media it strongly advised to hire experts who are well-familiar with quality standards. It's not enough just to transcribe. You need to know many guidelines to ensure that people who depend on access via text have comfortable reading experience cheap solutions Sion's do not always guaranteed good quality. It's hard for me as a deaf person to follow poorly formatted text in the same way that it's hard for people to listen to poor audio you. High Quality Captions and transcripts are as important as high quality audio to provide optimal experience. I actually have a follow up question regarding writing this. I've heard different answers on this question. When you do transcribe something that is prerecorded? Should it be a verbatim. Transcript or should it it be cleaned up for readability. What do you mean prerecorded like podcasts? and video recordings yes exactly text needs to be verbatim word for word rid of everything you hear. Plus Speaker identification and found descriptions for transcripts tax need to be broken down into paragraphs or captions and they need to be chunked into one. Too Short lines with logical grammatical breaks. This episode is brought to you by Pantheon. Starting a new project looking for a better hosting platform Pantheon is an integrated set of tools to build launch and run websites. Get high performance hosting for your wordpress right press sites plus a comprehensive toolkit to supercharge your team and help you launch faster on Pantheon. Ends up on Pantheon so you can head over to Pantheon Dot. Io today again to set up a free account pay only when it goes live. You've thanks so much to Pantheon for their support of this episode and this season of how I built it to your previous point. How can we have a proper verbatim transcripts as well as something readable you would need to hire experienced specialists? That's why I offer those services by a team of captions and transcribers who work with me. I also offer editing services to clients who made captions and transcripts themselves but need to get feedback from me on quality assurance sure aunts and educate on captioning and transcribing quality guidelines. Some experience and expertise is needed to create good quality captions and transcripts. It's it's not something that you can learn overnight a C.. So what are some tips. Maybe a checklist for someone like me. Who Does podcast and online courses to make sure my courses are properly accessible? What are the steps that I can take myself before hiring someone like you? It's a long list of guidelines. That's that's why I provide consulting on this but the major tip I give is not to just to turn on auto captions or have speech. Technologies take care of auto generated texts. If you use automated tools you will need to clean up to make sure that it's properly transcribed and has proper grammar and punctuation at a minimum and also add speaker identification and sound descriptions. That's a great point. I've heard other podcasters. Basically say they upload their shows to Youtube and then use the auto generated captions. But I've always felt that the auto generated captions falls short unless you invest more time into cleaning up and at that point so you might as well hire somebody to do it. Yes you're right. It's a very bad idea to turn on auto captions to think it's a solution to the problem. Another thing I wanted to know is that I spent seven years in regular schools as the only deaf person. I did not have any formal access to services and learn mostly from textbooks. I had difficulties difficulties with two classes because one had discussions and another one didn't have a textbook the solution was to have them recorded with teachers permissions. Of course course and then have. My mother transcribed them at home. She transcribed in verbatim an average of seven hours of recordings every week for two two years. She did using low tech tools paper and pen so I get frustrated. When I get complaints for media producers? How hard it is for them to make there media accessible using more modern tools in the twenty first century? I went to school long before we used computers or the Internet. Wow that is incredible label. So if you don't mind me asking have you been for your entire life. No I was born with normal hearing like my other family members I lost all. I bet when I was two years old after contracting meningitis. Well so you spent seven years in a school without help outside of of your mother helping. Did you eventually eventually go to a school with more available to you so long story short. I'm originally from Russia so my first language is Russian. I spent the first four ears in a school for the deaf where I used. Russian sign language but wasn't satisfied with the education there though I asked my family to transfer me to a regular school where I spent seven seven years. I also learned English and French as foreign languages. Mastering English allow me to attend American universities and I got a master's degree in.

MFC Brendan Byrne has the story it's the first all female space walk and space policy analyst Laura for sick is celebrating of course I'm excited that they're both women and off the most is walk into a long overdue a previous attempt at an all female space walk was scrapped back in March when the correct size space suits for the would be walkers couldn't be ready in time instead a male and female astronaut perform the task NASA's Megan macarthur says all for NASA astronauts on board the station now two women and two men can perform the power replacement task but I think the fact that it will be two women just as a reflection of the fact that we have so many capable qualified women in the office and you know many coming in through the different career channels that bring them into the astronaut office women in space walking for decades the Soviet union's Svetlana Savitskaya followed shortly by NASA's Catherine Sullivan became the first woman space walkers back in nineteen eighty four on separate missions and since then more than a dozen women had ventured outside in space but self described friends cook in mere understand the significance of their schedule walk here's cook speaking from the station in the past women haven't always been at the table and it's wonderful to be contributing to the human space flight program at a time when all contributions are being accepted when everyone has a role floating next to cook inside the station mir agrees what we're doing now shows all the work that went into the decades prior all the women that work to get us where we are today and I think the nice thing is for us we don't even really think about it on a daily basis it's just normal were part of the team were doing this work as an efficient team working together with everybody else so it's really nice to see how far that we've come so have criticized NASA and the media for the recent focus on gender diversity in space flight when women have been in space for decades retire NASA astronaut nickel Stott has lived in space more than one Hundred Days and participated in a space walk back in two thousand nine she's worked to get more women into engineering and the astronaut corps are we train astronauts is astronaut doesn't matter what flavor you are I love seeing now that we we are in a place where we have a much larger balance of women and men

But it's not gonna last because it's becoming cloudy in though, it is warming up today at forty four to forty eight the rain arrives by tonight, and it's heavy at times one to three inches of rainfall. Wind gusts to forty five miles an hour and coastal flooding with near full moon. If only it ended tonight, but Craig says that's going to be the case throughout the day tomorrow as well. A wind driven rain fifty five to sixty for the warm high. So no risk of anything. Freezing up on us. Rain tapers off to showers Friday night and by Saturday early morning showers if any will give way to some sunshine, windy and cooler high in the mid forty sunny on Sunday with a high of forty to forty five for Monday Christmas Eve, the sun giving way to clouds with a high temperature of forty to forty five degrees. This will mess with a lot of travel plans. I think over the next day or so, but then it gets dry after that forty now with sunshine. Shine fading behind increasing clouds.
