"I'm Jim Metzner. And this is the pulse of the planet. It's 2 39 When President Trump announced yesterday he would work around Congress to offer aid to Americans hurt by the pandemic. He may have been writing checks that his administration can't cash. CBS News, White House correspondent Paula Read says, although he promised in additional unemployment benefits that just may not happen. Not only is the Constitution pretty clear that the tax and spend power belongs to Congress, The president also doesn't necessarily have the power to coopt states into contributing to what is actually a federal unemployment benefit that he was trying to convey. The president said he would give unemployed people an additional $400 a week and expanded benefits and 100 of that would be coming from the states. Okay, It's the big mystery in Washington. Well, a big Mr Across the country former who's going to be the former vice president Joe Biden is pick for vice president as he runs for the presidency. While he is set to announce that pick for a running mate and lay Congresswoman Maxine Waters weighs in on it, she tells CNN. She is certain it will be an African American woman. She thinks it's either Senator Kamala Harris or Dr Susan Rice. They have gotten down to Possibly just too, And that is Pamela on that is Susan. And so I believe that it will be one of them. I do have a preference. I'm not going to say what is at this point. But I think my preference is going to be the one that will be selected. The Biden campaigned through a bit of a curve ball this week when Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was someone to Delaware for a meeting with the vice performer vice president Ah, community demanding justice for a soldier from Gino, who was killed while camping in North Carolina. The Fort Bragg paratrooper died during a memorial weekend outing with fellow soldiers. Army says the 21 year olds partial remains later washed up near the campsite. His sister says she's upset over the 9 11 recording where the caller suggests Martinez may have hurt himself. He wanted to live. He was A hippie, You know, he loved life. He wanted to travel the FBI, an army offering a $25,000 reward for credible information leading to the conviction off that killer. Election 2020: Biden's VP Pick

"There's plenty of general reporting out there about each of the possible women who Joe Biden might pick to be his vice president. We're here now to understand the Jewish angle for each of these impressive women to learn what American Jews should know about each of these candidates that might make them more supportive or concerned. So we're going to go one by one and get the Jewish angle from our guest Jacob Corn Blue, the national politics reporter for Jewish insider. Jacob. Thank you for joining us to be back. Let's start with Comma Harris a former candidate for the Democratic nomination a popular senator from California the State with the second largest Jewish population in the country. What's the Jewish angle on Senator Harris? First of all, she married to a Zionist of that Iraqi gets her a Jewish scientist. Yes. So that gives an upper hand in this Jewish of IPE stakes I think that Kamala Harris gives a lot. She adds up to the ticket number one just because she was a popular candidate and people. So her at the start as a rising star and somebody who can really take this to the very end unfortunately it for ourselves she didn't win the primaries should take on. Joe. Biden pretty early which gave. That rise in the polls in the only of twenty twenty. I will say that Biden. Biden comes to see who is preferred choice for Veep Kamala Harris has a big name recognition. Is Obviously arised star and her background, a label as being a black woman from California. But was so high tides in the Senate and in the Jewish community. So the pros are out. The cons are that I'm not sure Biden Israeli looking for someone on the ticket would potentially overshadow him not because Harris Donald understand that if she's on the ticket, she's number two and she's there to serve the presidential nominee and possibly the president. But Because Camera Harris ran on the same slop because she is a bishop you know she can overshadow him in media appearances and potentially as vice president of being a little more independent and vocal than let's say, Dick Cheney and pence on camera beyond the you know the happy coincidence of the Jewish husband is there anything in particular that Jews should know about Senator Harris is policy stances? What has she? Done on issues Anti Semitism, what has she done on supporting Israel, other issues of concern to the Jewish community I guess close ties with APEC obviously. She's spoken at several APEC conferences but she also appealed to the mainstream of the Democratic Party She's not seen as a controversial figure amongst progressives say as someone who is too pro Israel for them she will reflect the same policies that Biden Obama and. Anybody, else running a Democratic Party other than on the an Warren's she would you know align herself with the second policy views? So I don't think she's outstanding. She's not too long in the Senate to look back at a record by think, she has a strong provisions record and she is aligned itself with the mainstream of the Democratic Party next, let's talk about political MIA fights, Susan, rice, Susan Rice served. As US ambassador to the UN in President Obama's first term and his national security adviser in his second going even further back in time actually I think I think she was the youngest ever assistant secretary of State She was you know thirty three or something like that when President Clinton in Nineteen Ninety eight made her the system secretary of State for Africa what did you need to know about Susan? Rice. Well Susan Rice first of all is A. Mixed emotions about Susan, Rice obviously, she has good ties with prominence numbers of the Jewish community and she has a record serving as national security adviser and embassador to the UN on their Obama Democrats SAPORTA. Mostly Obama's policy when it comes to how other than the last UN Security Council. Two, three, three, four, a resolution, and just mind our listeners about two three four why that was controversial. The only time when Obama. ABSTAINED ON APRIL then. All on settlements that you know really couldn't dent on Obama's record when it comes to a majority of American Jews talking about Republican Jews, all those. In Israel who soul Obama as being the more salt when it comes to the Palestinian issue. But Susan Rice obviously had a this overlap from being a national security adviser and the to the UN. Obviously, she was a controversial figure on this front. She was criticized by Dennis. Ross by the full hug combative style. When came to the Palestinian issue on the other hand, she has very strong ties with somebody like a Fox who is very vocal in his pro Israel stats

Biden Won't Travel to Milwaukee to Accept Democratic Nomination, Harris or Rice as Potential VP Running Mate

"Joe Biden's choice for a running mate apparently is Kamala Harris or Susan Rice. Axios says Biden is narrow the choices down to those two. He's also decided to skip the Democratic Convention. The committee, citing health risks due to the potential spread of covert 19 former vice president Biden is instead expected to accept the party's nomination in Delaware. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. "Contrast, President Donald Trump cut taxes for the American people, and we're going to keep fighting for tax really for the American people for four more years more broadly pencil saying the Biden is going to set us on a path toward socialism in decline now. Here's the thing. The Trump campaign basically has to make a two step argument when it comes to Joe Biden. Step number one does not control himself. Step number two people who are in control of the people who are radical. The good news for them is that Biden is providing evidence of that every day, and whoever he selected his as his VP pick is going to go a long way toward opening a door. For Republicans. This is why I think his smart make is probably Susan Rice. She appears somewhat more moderate in public. Then, for example, a communist like Karen Bass, she's not nearly as off putting as common Harris. I think it'll probably end up being Susan Rice. If I had to beg but money on it, But with that said Whoever he select whomever Biden's Lex is likely become the focal point of the campaign, Penn says. Listen, Biden is going to set us on a path towards socialism and decline, and he's not going to bore in favor of any of the values of capitalism or Americanism that America historically has stood for. But the truth is Joe Biden and the radical Democrats.

How to make video meetings more real

"On your first box. Everyone's Jefferson brand. Here you're listening to talking tech spending a Lotta time actually talking to people about video meeting and how we're living with them during this very challenging time and twenty twenty today's topic. How do we make the meetings that are virtual? Feel the same as it for their in person. So I taught allow people for this. What you gotTa do at work a lot harder to make them entertaining to make them fun to reach out to people to game affi- everything's one of the people I spoke to her name is Camille Schmitt she works at a streaming service called Filo. And what they do is they do getting to know your day they basically every day is like kindergarten. Tell us something we didn't know about yourself share something with us. It's a little Corny but Camille tells me that it works also spoke to mark Hohmann who is a small business owner he's got a camera store in L. A. called Paul's photo, which has nonstop classes during the pandemic he had to shift the all online. How do you replicate the experience where students come in really to interact with other students and with the instructor? By starting early. Starts every class a half hour early. So people can just sit there and talk to each other sounds like a pretty good idea. Randy. Lerman he is a DJ. He works the Wedding Bar, Mitzvah and Party circuit in Los Angeles. He's lost a lot of parties. This year as most have because parties have stopped. What does he do? He is moved to do Trivia Games on line four corporations and for anybody else who's interested he gets people involved by playing trivia it's working for him. I talked to a guy who is a classic salesman he works for Schneider Electric going from town to town. Selling his electrical outlets to hotels, and now can't do that. He told me what he really misses the handshake walking side by side the opportunity to finish the meeting grab lunch afterwards that's what he misses. But for Tyler Hake what he can do is have a lot more meetings because he's not traveling. So he can see more people in it's working out. Susan Orlean has been meeting with high school students for years consulting with them on how to best prepare for college? Not, at our office anymore she's got rid of the office. She's having video

"A banks stores along with K and G fashion superstores. Moore's clothing from men. These are all the companies owned by tailored brands. Chapter 11. This is the restructuring bankruptcy. This isn't you were shattering our doors, but Who isn't that this one was reading. Was it over the weekend was that Friday or so kill dept. Ola had the ongoing list on the Journal Sentinel. You know, Js online about the restaurants and some of the coffee shops that are closing. And not reopening anytime soon. If ever. I know Wagner has talked to about the loss of desire for suit, wearing also, and I know men's warehouse does other things and suits. But like that was a big part of the game. There was buying suits and people just don't buy tailored suits anymore. Where they are. They're just not buying CIA suits just aren't necessarily up on the lists like they were way back. When, well, look, I will tell you what In this day and age where people are working from home or are working off a zoom conference. You don't need suits for that, either, but he had it with the millennials and the younger generations. Just not wearing suits. Now you have this where people are working from home without pants on. This is the way we play the game. How they haven't played that game for years for you. You know, I'm right. Speaking of working without their pants on big decision for Joe Biden? Yes, is ready to rock with the Segway. That one just didn't make any sense and completely derailed. Thank you. Well, he said in his basement way, Just see him from the chest Tended geese in around. Yes, Outside. So, yes. Oh, Joe Biden. Many assumed this week. I mean, his campaign is that this week we will learn who is VP pick will be and it sounds like it's basically down to three women. There's been talk of Susan Rice. But who knows? That name is kind of come and gone. The other ones are Val Demings congresswoman from Florida. Karen Bass. I believe a congresswoman from Caliph, California, the other from Florida. And then, of course, Camilla Harris from California Elizabeth Warren, I don't think so. No think so. I well, I mean, her name has been on the list are many who would be invigorated by that would be super charged by that. But there's also that it factor that you need, especially when he said he was looking and you assume he's looking for a woman of color. Elizabeth Warren, who's in her seventies. Dwight may not think that I do not underestimate Joe Bynes ability to screw this thing up. And I think if you pick the ones with war, and that would be AH, mistake. It's hard at this point. As I like. You am intrigued by the O's hers at her. What's the rumor? What's the scuttlebutt changes by the hour? Who knows at this point, How much is legit? And how much is intentional interference sent by Biden's camp sent by Biden opponents within the Democratic Party sent by the camps of the various women whose names have been thrown out as possibilities. So what's real? What's not what's interference? What's legitimate reporting? Tough to tell? We do know this DNC starts in two weeks and he's going to have to have somebody by so usually last time around. It's about a week before. We did anticipate this week Bill. I mean, his campus said this week, Major Garrett told us a couple of weeks ago. You know, it'll be the first week in August. That's when they're planning to do this. So I anticipated. I thought it was going to happen over the weekend. And it didn't so we'll see. Could be the next thing to drop here in the next few hours. We'll see if you still remember when Romney picked Ryan Yeah, That was what tipped it off that whether he was announcing it wasn't here. Now. It's ended on a on a boat, wasn't it? Something like that. It was a Friday night in front of a ship. I think it was in North Carolina. I think it was the North wasn't in North Carolina. A ton of the military, you know? Naval base is right there along Yes. And then Paul Ryan came down member and he had to walk down from the ship, and it took him forever. Gentlemen, Paul, my my vice presidential nominee, Paul Ryan, and whatever song they played. I'm I have Ah, American and he's walking. But it took him forever because to get from the top of a ship down onto this platform, he had to walk in a zigzag pattern. It wasn't like it was. It was just it was drawn out. Didn't stumble Ernie Walker them. No. Yes, And he was. Yeah, it wasn't tiny little steps either. Some politicians are known to take when they're walking off the stage. I think buying was off. I think he was on a weekend to and he was down in Springfield in Illinois when Obama announced him Ember, Palin and McCain. Palin was announced by McCain and everybody but who are the biggest issue is the biggest stories biggest form for talking about what matters. They just stick in the state now live from the and its wealth.

"Supplementation with natural support. And so we're able to see these amazing results. You know, for instance, Susan I lost £30 so she came in down £30. This is a 42 year old female. She lost £30.40 days, and she's off for cholesterol. She's off her thyroid meds. So she came in. We did. The by energetic testing would personalized those formulas for Then we also took a look at the blood work. We saw that she needed G I She needed liver support. She needed sideboard support. We're able to do that, and she's down £30 in 40 days off the cholesterol medication off the thyroid medication. And it's It's fantastic. She's going. You know, the DNA is going to show her how to hide what supplementation is need to go forward. We're going to keep taking a look at her bloodwork going forward. She can always send it to us. We'll be able to see You know how to tell you that as well for functional purposes, And so it's an amazing thing that way. Well, you know what's interesting with the blood work is that it doesn't have to be. You know, like blood work that you got last month. If you've had your blood work done within the past six months to a year, that's totally fine as well. Because, as we all know, really, By the time things show up in our blood, it's you know, it could be years that we've already had something or didn't have something. So it doesn't have to be something that your doctor just wrote you a script for, you know, like last week, and you had it done last week, So that's really that's about functionality. Exactly. So that's really what's great. You don't have to, you know, run around before you come to us, because, you know Right now, this is you know, this is kind of we're in the homestretch here right before we start wearing bathing suits. So I do want to say that we have about 6 to 8 weeks left until it gets really warm and we have to start shedding all of our clothing. And I think it's very interesting because this is kind of like the couple of weeks when everybody starts calling and they're like I have to get in immediately immediately. I have to get in immediately, and I love these conversations, You know? I think it's really great for morale for our office is because I think you know it's wonderful that everybody has to come in immediately. I think it's great to have an urgency. But what is amazing is that this is only about six weeks. And you learn very, very quickly and you drop a lot of weight and you drop fat. You don't drop water. And I think it really gives you an amazing outlook on you know how you're going to feel how you gonna feel for the rest of your life, you know? We had several gentlemen walking out of our office this week that have just finished the program that air down 50 plus pounds some which came in. Yeah, I mean, I'm going to talk about them separately. But you know, some which came in really, really sceptical to begin with one of them, Right? Well, I mean, you know, because some of these folks I speak with at the beginning, some of them I don't sew some of them. I see on the back end. The's thiss one gentleman I actually happen to have spoken to at the beginning. When he started the program. He's actually a chef and a Pastore and a pastor on DH. He had been wanting to lose weight a really, really long time ago for a very long time, and what's interesting is actually so he came in, and he signed up for a program. Over a year ago. And this is so interesting, but you know his head was never in the game right? So he could never really put his head in his motions together to really start the program. So he called us at the beginning of the year, and he said, I have all my stuff is all my stuff's still good. We said yes. It's also good as long as you kept it, you know, a normal temperature and whatnot. You know, I'm ready to start now. So he starts the programme about weekend too, because you know this is a chef. So you know he knows what he's doing Clearly, so he calls up, he says, I'm in panic mode had been losing weight and installed. And I'm like, all right, well, I said, will you mean by stalled so he really didn't stall? What happened was he was losing weight consistently for about 10 days. I think he was down like 14 or £16. 10 days in 10 days, and he won didn't lose what I think he didn't hey, did not lose weight He actually gained. I think eight ounces, so he was out of his mind. He was like, I don't understand. I'm doing everything right. I'm doing this and I said, listen, I said, I'm sure it's just your body kind of checking in with itself, because that's exactly what happens right about 10 to 14 days into the program. This happens to everybody. Your body kind of does a You know, controlling a little control Delete. I like to call it a kind of says Wait a minute. Now I've been losing, you know so steadily and quite a bit of fat, and it tends to just Yeah, I just need to adjust. So I'm going to hold on to a little bit of fat and water for the next 24 to 48 hours, and then I'm going to reset and get going. So anyway, Alex's £50 or more down by the way s O. He just finished the program this week. And you know, he needs some new clothing him and I discussed this every time he comes into the office, But you know, it's great, and he's like my wife is ready to start now. So I was like she was waiting for you. You were her guinea pig s O, You know, I think it's great on what I think is great about it is that you know someone like him and It's interesting because he's been posting a whole bunch of pictures of his food that he's been cooking for himself, and we're going to add some of it to our cookbook, and I asked him to send some of that in..

Primary results: Kris Kobach loses Kansas Senate primary

"Primary season and in yesterday's contests, Progressive Democrats scored two high profile victories. While a conservative aligned with President Trump lost to a more mainstream Republican in Kansas. NPR's Susan Davis is here to sort through results and tell us what this might signal about November. Let's start with the Republican contest where former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach lost the GOP Senate primary to Congressman Roger Marshall today you wrote that this is a win for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. How so? Well. Marshall was McConnell's preferred candidate. The Senate Leadership Fund, which is an outside Superpac align with the leader spent over $2 million to help Marshall win. McConnell, like many Republicans believed that if Kobach had won, he would've tanked the party's chances of holding to the on to that seat in November and very likely could have taken the majority down with it. A word of caution here, though, Marshal is still not a sure bet. There's still interesting things happening in Kansas, and that race looks like it could still be competitive. And I've talked to GOP strategist who say it's gonna You know they're going to keep investing in Kansas to keep it in their column, but ultimately this is a seat that will be harder for Democrats to win and the battle for the Senate carries on.

Betty Ford's Healing Legacy: A Conversation with Susan Ford Bales

"Today, we're joined by Susan Ford Welcome. Susan. You are aid author, photo journalist. The youngest of four children to President and Mrs Ford. We are appropriately here at the Betty Ford Center, where you're also on the board of trustees of the Hazel Betty. Ford Foundation. Your mother's legacy. was as a breast cancer survivor and advocate, and as a woman in recovery, and as an advocate for being a woman in recovery. How has the legacy of your mother? Affected your role here at the Betty, Ford? Center. Wow Her shoes were really big to fill your So when she stepped down from the board and I became chairman. I. Think it was harder than living in the White House actually because. We mother and I come from two different parts of recovery. She is a patient and the family member. So we have very different opinions of things than and what's important to us One of the things that she made me do, which was extremely painful with sit on every city every single committee. And participate on my witness finance. Finance. But I learned it. Sure. And so I feel like she did a great job of preparing me to be chairman. So it's it's just we come at it from a different angle in a different perspective family and children's services is extremely important to me because that's how I was affected by this disease. Did you come to the the role of being the chair here at Betty? Ford, did you come to that reluctantly? No because I had been on the board for cheese, probably fifteen years I'm it had just been a long process Mother was gracious and allowed me to raise my children before I came on the board because I was pregnant when the. Betty. Ford. Center open. So. I don't think I came on the board until my youngest was first grade or second grade, and so she gave me some time to get my children raised in at least in school because it required several days travel and all of that in childcare and all the complications that we go through to participate in something like that. Let's go back a little bit and talk about the history of the Betty, Ford Center there's a lot of people who think that when your mother found her own recovery in the late seventy s, she went to the Betty Ford Center. It wasn't even here now was, how did the Betty Ford Center come to be. Johnson from Eisenhower Medical Center decided that. They wanted to have a treatment and it had been in the plan at Eisenhower for some time, they wanted to have an alcoholic treatment center on the campus. and. So Leonard firestone mother's dear, friend was also on the board of Eisenhower. And so Johnson Leonard. Kinda. Tag. Team. Durham. and. She was really in a recovery about four years. But she agreed and I and I thought that was a very courageous step to be so early recovery. So she came to all of us children and she said. When I'm long gone. You're the ones that are going to have to live with the fact that your mother had A. Drug and alcohol treatment. Centre, named after you. How do you feel about that? Wow, and we also we don't care. I mean. It's what a great Lexi you know. She was one of the first to step out and and share her story So once we got past that it was just a matter of mother and Leonard Raising the money. To get this place started and of course. Way? Back, then in the early nineteen, Eighty S. The Hazel and foundation played a role also in the birthplace. Can you share just a little bit about that? Well, mother spent quite a bit a time when to Hazelton, because Hazelton had done it. So well, they were probably the leaders in the in the sense that they had been around the longest And it was successful There's lots of treatment centers that haven't been successful. Some other went back and spent probably close to a week there visiting with counselors visiting with a staff talking, how do you do this? What did you do? Right? What did you do on? Why? What makes Hazelton successful because we basically wanted to copy what they had done, but in a different location sure who would have ever imagined decades later. The two organizations would come together and I WANNA to come back to that in just a minute. But First Susan I want to address an issue that. Always bothers me and then set the the Betty Ford. Center is seen as a place for. The rich and famous for the exclusive for those who can pay out of pocket. But that's not at all what's happening here is no and less than one percent of the patients here are what we would think of as celebrities. Yes. We've had some celebrities, but so was Hazelton I mean. So as other places everybody needs treatment, it doesn't matter what you do that determines you need treatment. So, and they don't get treated any different than. My Mother didn't get treated any different Long Beach. The women, she shared a room with. So it's the same.

Biden’s Top Running-Mate Contenders Emerge as He Enters Key Week

"So here's the thing with Biden's process. NBC reported that he is supposed to meet with all of these potential picks this week by midweek and judging counting on my fingers, let's see mid week that would be tomorrow. So if you're going to meet by midweek that's tomorrow. Hump Day. Kamala Harris, Karen Bass are two of the front runners Susan Rice. She's 100 front runner and then Additionally, NBC says Congresswoman Val Demings from Florida is under consideration. And Senator Elizabeth Warren. But there right now considered the also rans that he is in a position right now where he's thinking Kamala Harris, Karen Bass or Susan Rice for his top three Now, This is pretty interesting, because one we were familiar with Susan Rice. She's you know, a neo con, deeply conventional person in Washington D C very much to return to the status quo. She's very Lying comes very easily to her. She's been doing it for years. She doesn't mind doing it to the American public s o. She would do whatever it is that the Biden campaign needs and restore the status quo to Washington, which everyone's really amped up for. It can't wait to get back to the old days on. That's what Susan Rice would represent. And then there's Kamala Harris, who, for whatever reason, is under consideration in the midst of this giant conversation around police and law enforcement injustice. They decided to go for a prosecutor who treated people deeply unfairly left exonerating evidence off the table that would have helped people on death row in prison people for marijuana usage and then later laughed about her own marijuana usage, flaming hypocrite in all of those ways, so she's out there, both of them rather well known, but there's 1/3 person. And it's congresswoman, Karen Bass from California, and she is one of the least scrutinized people at the national level in all of American politics. And for that reason, Boy, have you noticed how many stories and headlines have popped up in the last few days about her past and about what she has said and done. I wondered to myself if she's regretting being part of this screening process for VP If she's like, Oh, man, the senator not well for me all my skeletons air coming out of the

Possible VP Pick Susan Rice Says She Can Handle Pandemic

"Rice is one of a handful of women on Joe Biden's short list for a running mate. She told us she is the right fit for the job. Yes, I think I could bring my experience of almost now. 20 years in the senior levels of the executive branch to bear to help tackle the most pressing problems we face. And while this would be the first time she would campaign for herself Ambassador Reiss told our co host Steve Inskeep that she's ready for him. Regardless of your experience in government, a big part of the vice presidency or seeking the vice presidency is campaigning, of course, which is not something that you've had a lot of experience doing. Do you have any eagerness to to campaign? Well, Steve. Yes, I've not run for office on my own behalf, but I've run for office on other people's behalf, where I did actually quite a bit of retail politics and speaking to groups of people. But I think unfortunately, in the current context with the pandemic, this will be quite an unusual campaign. If you were in office, you would face the fundamental problem of trust in government or lack of trust in government that is playing out. Now, Many people are refusing to wear facemasks. It seems evident from surveys that many people would think the same way about a vaccine once it's available. What would you do about that? Well, I think that's a huge challenge. And we have had vaccines many in many stages in our history. Still, today, Children need certain vaccines to be able to go to school. And I think that we're gonna have to take a similar approach that you know for kids to be able to go back to school and in Whatever jurisdiction they ought to be vaccinated and the localities ought to consider also requiring the people in the household with the Children to be vaccinated for the very reason that's obvious that this is You know, something that affects the entirety of the community. I want to ask about a couple of foreign policy problems that any administration would face on January 20th 2021 1 of them is deteriorating U. S relations with China. Now I know you've been critical of the way that President Trump is approached China. But at the same time, there are foreign policy experts across the spectrum, who said China's a problem? We don't know how to confront China. Maybe it's time for a confrontation with China. Would you want to roll back U. S relations with China to the way they were in 2016? Steve. No. I don't think you can roll back the clock on any critical issue to 2016. The world has changed and we have to deal with the world as it is. But having said that my criticism is Based predominantly on the fact that we have approached the challenge the China poses economically and strategically in isolation rather than in partnership with our allies in Asia and Europe. You know, instead of, for example, approaching our concerns about trade and economic policy, collectively with our European and Asian partners, who share many of those same concerns, and who Joining with us could add to our collective pressure on China to change its policies and approaches. We started separate trade battles with our closest allies. If you've got more partners behind you, is there some value in a confrontation with China? Well, if by confrontation you mean is it smart for us to start a hot war? I think absolutely not. No. But what about in other ways, diplomatically or otherwise? Well, diplomatically. Sure. First. What we don't need to seek confrontation for its own sake. We need to be strong and smart in how we compete with China. And push back on China's policies on the economic and the security front that threaten our interests. We also should be speaking up vocally and and forcefully about China's egregious human rights abuses from How it treats the Uighurs to the people of Hong Kong. It's common to say that a lot of the divisions of the last few years are merely highlighting what was already there. You could say that President Trump talks the way that a lot of Americans talk and believes what a lot of Americans believe, which is why millions of people voted for him. For example, it is often said that the pandemic Has struck the most vulnerable communities because they were vulnerable over a long period of time that we're just having American society exposed in a different way. Do you believe that? Well, I believe that What the pandemic has done is show how much disparity there is among Americans from a socioeconomic point of view and to a large extent of racial and ethnic point of view, And you know if it wasn't obvious to people before it, it ought to be now. But I don't think that that is the same thing is the first part of your question, which is To suggest that you know, all Donald Trump has done is shined a spotlight on some of the underbelly of our society. I don't think that's right. I think Americans at the end of the day Are not people who like to hate and to fear one another. Do you feel that you understand the roughly 40% of Americans who approve of the job the president is doing. I do think I have a good understanding. Maybe not a perfect understanding in part, Steve, because, as I write in my book, I have a 23 year old son whom I love dearly, whose politics are very, very different from my own, and from the rest of our family. Talk more about that. What are his politics? Ah, you know, I have a very conservative son in a very progressive daughter. They're both wonderful, intelligent. Passionate, committed kids. My son and I will have some robust disagreements are over some matters of policy. Not all. And yet at the end of the day. I love him dearly, and he loves me. As there have been an issue where he is almost persuaded you that maybe you're wrong. Yeah, I'm sure. I'm sure there is And you know the thing is, and I read about this in in the book. In the last chapter. I write about the areas where we agree. And the areas where we disagree, So we agree, for example. On the importance of the United States, playing a responsible principle leadership role in the world. We agree on the importance of having strong alliances. You know, we disagree. On things like, Ah, choice. I'm pro choice. He's pro life. That's the kind of difference that we oughta be able to respect. Ambassador Susan Rice. It's a pleasure to talk with. Thank you, Steve

"Trying out short stories always your first story when you I mean not so much the first one that you can. Write maintenance sixteen and Seventeen I was reading science fiction I. there's a there's a story called repent Harlequin said the tiktok man by Harlan Ellison and it was in one of those you know world's greatest science fiction's nineteen, sixty, six, nineteen, Sixty, seven is a collection. And I would read those things back and forth I just loved them. I remember sitting in bed. Reading that story again but TIKTOK man story and I thought I could probably do something like this and And went downstairs and got on the Family Commodore Amiga. which had at that point had been just used for defender of the crown and there was you know a pre wordpress or not were pressed but a pre word program that we had on there and I sat down and wrote a story and it was a science fiction story it was absolutely horrible. It was something about trying to be. Satirical without even knowing satire was at that point is trying to be funny without really having a sense of irony or I had it but I didn't know how to portray it online on on the page. Yeah. and I. Remember. It took it took me a couple of hours and finished it. brought. To my girlfriend at the time I said, hey read this she looked at it. She read it kind of is like, what are you like you should keep trying? All right. At least you didn't say stop. Yeah Yeah exactly. Yeah. It was very nice her was there someone in your family because I mean getting into English and you're talking about some of the books that you read and then into writing? was there someone in your family that? Product you towards. Your joy for reading. Would you even define it as a joy for reading because absolute our devour books? Yep well, maybe not as fast as some people but yeah, I am constantly reading Yeah my mother she she got me into reading very very early I I. What I finally decoded everything figured it out. I, brought a stack of my. You know my doctor seuss books down to her while she was watching the. Cable Net. So I think and just started reading to her out loud and and from that point on there was always a there's always book around it was something that I could always retreat to I didn't know it at the time but just personality wise I'm fairly introverted doesn't mean that I don't like people just means I need to have some alone time and that's where I would get it. I could go home. I'd read a Stephen King Book Re. Short Stories I. Got Into. A. Clockwork. Orange. And all those dystopia novels and you could use that to kind of relax and recharge by between her and my brother. My brother was the one who also use like, Hey, you should read this your one flew over the CUCKOO's nest. Now here's a coke orange like I said, hey, did you get the new Stephen King? They would just feed me stuff and then you know there's All over the house and so I just had my pick I just walk around and you know. GonNa re I didn't know Stephen King wrote four books. You pick that one up and move on from there and then start developing your own tastes and and move on. I think you might mention of it. What was your first piece of writing that you handed into someone besides your girlfriend for a critique? That was junior year. and we're supposed to write a fictional story I ended up fictionalized event that. You know that we want to up at my mother's Relatives House up in Jersey and that crashed and burned really really. Well, it's. I was I was up against another kid in class meaning we we've been partners. and. He wrote this amazing piece of course and then and he wrote I of course to read his out loud and then I read mine and it was just frigates. Suddenly found in this as well But he you know go ahead go ahead. Well I. got the feedback that that at the time. I needed you know. Every writer when they go into writing for the first time especially that age you don't know what revision means you don't know really what constructive feedback means, and so that's that's what the teacher is trying to say look it's not going to be perfect. The first time this is a rough draft, and so you get the positive stuff in the negative stuff and you go back and Redo it and I I went back and wrote a different story instead because I was embarrassed and I didn't know how to you know handle that particular situation. But I I, I, put it through three or four drafts, and then my teacher was like, yeah, that's what I'm talking about it. That's that's how you do it, and so you learn from those particular situations. How is your your balance of confidence with your writing even though it needed Some revision is standing there in reading in front of your your classmates, the confidence. Could did you have a balanced with that because personally I remember my first year university might first communications class in my knees were shaking and I was scared forty people in the class I looked at my communication Susan. Shut up. Even. Though I had a paper here in front of me. How was your balance with that? Probably. Mighty pen. Yeah, exactly you know naked in front of the class. Yeah well, that's that's exactly I. I. Don't know if if my voice was shaking, my knees were knocking at that point I? Do Remember one of the things I was trying to make sound. Funny. Did Not come off as funny. and there is just silence and it was that the that feeling in the pit of your stomach in front of your, you know this is an advanced English class eleventh grade and. I was like Oh man I blew it. You know from that point on he's going to. And finishes. Waiting for you to be over. And there's been plenty of those moments too. Yeah exactly especially following the other guy who? It was he was I. think he ended up being the Valedictorian and just he just knew what he was doing at an early age You know. There wasn't any ever like any jealousy of my my half. I was just always like man he's so much better. But that takes humility right like just to say no. That guy's talented. Suppose just recognizing it. Yeah. Recognizing I mean acknowledged that wow, that guy's talented I have some ways to go. Yeah and Also. Just being a nice person but also I think. It wasn't a secret how good he was everybody knew that because he was he was killing across all of the subjects and it was just one of those things I have no idea where this guy came from it he's amazing. and I think he had transferred over freshman year so we didn't know. Nobody knew who why non horses exactly. Wow. You're awesome in everybody's Askar you. Just for you just to realize, okay, you gotta work on it a little bit more and then you'll succeed. Yeah that's why people like that exist. It's it's. A It's what gives you drive sometimes I. I gotta hit that level. So after university, what was your? What was your mission? I was a drummer and punk rock bands and we were touring up and down the east coast playing basements in bars and small clubs, and we recorded a whole bunch of albums and that was what we were trying to do. I did that for about three and a half four years? Yeah. Yeah Absolutely yeah. It in me see in. One of the band's had a few in there even though I did not play guitar if I got a base and I kind of plunked around and figure out what the notes were and showed it to the guys who knew better than me and we fashion. A song out of that, I could I could yell scream. Or sorry y'all sing. With some sort of melody in there, some sort of harmony. Another band was I started getting more confident. Now is a fifty percent songwriter with that group. and then you know, 'cause you hop around from band abandoning. You know they last a year or two so that there was another band you know those those I who were punk rock ish or just rock bands then got into like an old country band where I was a one third singing partner in writing partner. After that, I got kind of got tired of of writing and I just WANNA play drums. I played A. Backup not. WanNa sing right now I, just want to play drums. I'm already doing five things at once and adding in their six so. Let. Me just play drums but yeah, it was it was a Lotta Fun. How much will even bringing up the confidence level? How much was that good for you to be on stage? I mean. Did that add

Marijuana in California: How the state's legalization of weed has not destroyed the black market

"For decades, pot farmers have hauled their weed on this winding, remote road. A lot of it grown on family farms like Casey O'Neil's. They've been here since the seventies. He's he has just 45 marijuana plants. He calls them his ladies and their tucked between his rose of vegetables all the canvas in this row Strawberry Valley. Good show. O'Neill, who spent time in jail for cultivating marijuana before it was legal, was one of the first to get a license after Prop 64 past. I grow cannabis because I really love it. I like to consume it. I like to be around it. It's something that Provides my being and consciousness with tremendous love and support. But his being in consciousness is getting strangled by red tape and a laundry list of requirements that don't make sense to growers like weighing marijuana leaves. Which is the part of the plan. You don't smoke and can't get you high. I must take all of the leaf that comes off the plant. I must weigh it. I must record the weight and I must put it in a locked compost facility, so it's just side. Big brother. The worry with believes that it's his hand smoke, believe. Why does it matter? Exactly Then there's the cost of operating legally a major reason, O'Neill says. Farmers he knows have decided to keep growing and selling marijuana illegally. For most people out here, the opportunity to participate does not exist the barriers to entry or too high. Costs are too high. The skill sets are too low. The flip side of it is, people are not going to jail for cannabis. And what's the cost to you? So when you factor in consulting fees You know, I just did a back of the napkin calculation. And over the last 34 years, I'm well over 50,000 into it $50,000 for white permits for permits for consulting $2500 a year for the Waterboard discharge permit. It's $750 a year for the pond permit. It's 1350 application fee to the county, plus another 6 75 when they actually give you the permit annually. Farm, this tiny for the smallest farm that there is, and that's one of the problems. Is that what does that do Your profits? What profits you not make any money right now? So where's the money being made in California? Turns out in the very place legalization was supposed to destroy the black market, which often operates out of storefronts like this in strip malls around the state. Susan listen, shops don't have to pay for state and local permits and conceal marijuana much cheaper because they don't charge customers marijuana taxes, which could reach as high as 45%. So it's cheaper and easier to buy pot on the black market, which is three times larger than the legal one. Unlike other industries, we have this kind of in the shadows unspoken about competitors, right and So it's like it's not like California's fully raging, fully legal really were building to fully regulated state, but we're not. We're certainly not there yet

Joe Biden's Potential Running Mate: Who Is Karen Bass?

"Campaign Campaign 2020. 2020. We We don't don't have have long long to to wait wait for for Joe Joe Biden Biden to to announce announce his his running running mate. mate. It's It's expected expected to to happen happen next next week. week. As As the the list list is is narrowed. narrowed. California California Democratic Democratic Congresswoman Karen Bass is considered a key contender. She's 66 chairs the Congressional Black Caucus. We talk about Bass with Washington Post political analyst and data columnist David Beiler, who has continued his Siri's looking at various potential Biden. Runningmate. Karen Bass would be governing choice rather than election choice. You know, she's a representative from California, California is not exactly a swing state so she doesn't have exactly those advantages. But her advantages would really come into play. Actually, when buying is in office so fast is widely known as someone who is a compromiser who sort of an incrementalist, not someone who is necessarily a purist, which really sets with Biden's governing style. He talks a lot about wanting to negotiate and compromise with the Republicans as much as possible. She is the head of the Congressional Black Caucus. On DSO. Dominating paths would be a real nod to multiple different groups that have been important to the buying campaign. There's black women who are the most Democratic demographic group in the country. There are black congressional leaders like Jim Clyburn, who helped revive Biden's campaign when it was really on the ropes in late February of this year. Andi. She's someone who I think you've seen in recent interviews has some instincts that are a little bit Biden esque When asked about the defund the police slogan she sort of did to step that. I think you reminded me. A fine one was to say, I don't like defund the police as a slogan, which is smart because that collection of words does not pull well. At the same time, we're sort of able to say they're these elements of the plans that I support. And those are elements of the plans that her constituents like so she kind of has a lot of stylistic things and a lot of talents and abilities that I think makes her sort of governing pick if you well, you alluded to this about the fact that she's from California, and you're not gonna get a Republican victory in California at least on this level. Is that the one downside to abiding bass ticket or are there others? I think the other downside is that the vetting Been relatively minimal compared to some of the other candidates. Now, Obviously, the buying campaign is doing their own betting with every candidate right now, and you know, putting him through the paces and seeing if there's something going on That they wouldn't want on their ticket. But Bass within the last couple months has come under fire for remarks where she called Fidel Castro commandant and Hef and sort of had a tone that lot of other people. Democrats from Florida in particular did not appreciate so the question with passes. Is there more baggage? When you look at someone like Kamala Harris or Elizabeth Warren? They've already been through the wringer and a presidential primary. Susan Rice has already gone through a Senate confirmation hearing. So the question with bass is also just Is there anything that you don't know that might be harmful, and the answer might be know that by knows everything and that there's nothing else there. But You know, there's some amount of risk in a pick that hasn't been in the public eye so much. David Beiler, political analysts and data columnist for The Washington Post, joining us on Skype.

That's one of those fetishes. Where even when consensual yeah okay. We don't have much time. We keep saying we've said ten minutes five. It's ten minutes quite a bit more than two but okay go wrong information. All Right Ford Lord you. Are you ready to relax now. For ten minutes. Yeah so It's close up we're going to close up so Let's let's see. Can I talk to her for a little bit. I WanNa ask you some things and ask you some things okay. So what are you find erotic Oscar. Yeah You oh yes. What do I find erotic? Yeah what's in your head when you are getting off. Yeah Oh my gosh. I don't even know say I made you like someone being in charge of you. D like being submissive. Is that a thing I'm actually a switch. But it's easy for me to be submissive with strangers interesting. Yeah I could become a dom with someone that I know and trust and have really strong chemistry with or like with hate sex. Eight secs onto rain. Mm Yes okay you know. Bonobos have angry sex sometimes you'll pay to do that they make up sex and I think too when you're really young and pretty and there's a lot of people that want to have sex with you and do all these things with you. You sometimes don't know what you like because you're very busy so you know being beautiful and living out other people's fantasies but that doesn't mean you won't learn what you like as life goes on but it makes sense is that you might not know. Does how porn helps in a way. I mean everything has its good and its bad. The good thing about porn is it opens you up and allows allows you to explore all different things and there's not a lot of shame involved but the bad thing if there's a bad thing is that you might just take on what other people want to the point that you don't know what you want exactly so always try to tune into that intuition that feeling of what you want and it might not be easy to hear that that when you're young and but as you get older it'll be a stronger voice within you. Yeah Amen Amen at a women and thank you very much sure Kind.
