"You heard I miss SE, based upon report just received From Mark Chernoff was in the studio at the time. Plane has just hit the World Trade Center. Now, ordinarily, every other day for like, oughta know, 30 years, it would have been Bernard, who would've told I missed that. But Bernie it just so happens that morning. Was not in studio, you know, and we'll tell you want a second. But that day was a gorgeous, sunny blue sky Day. And for most of this morning, it's been somewhat overcast, but very eerie fashion right now, If you look outside, we have windows surrounding our brand new studios. It is a blue, sunny sky. Almost the same exact sky We saw back 19 years ago today when you Bernard, We're not in studio today because you were on 96. Broadway. Yes, I wass. It was a cool It was a crisp, beautiful, sparkling sunny morning. Today, a little humid, some clouds clearing up, but either way, I remember it vividly. It's a CZ. Many of us till we were out there was the Republican primary Republican primary was delayed for some reason. A Merrill primary. And I was out with a couple of Ah, comedians Monty, the late Monteria Ivey these black eyes and stuff on Dweck, and we should do stuff with MSNBC and W Fe and, you know, ambush people with Ah, goofy interviews or whatever. And we had a satellite drug there, and they were like, guys. We got to wrap this up. Ah, there was a 46. Of course. Ah, playing just at the world trades and we've got to go down and cover it. And for a while, you know, we thought, okay. It was an accident. It was some sort of, you know, Mistake plane flew past it took him a while to pack up and get ready and in the interim Of course, 903 came and went and they were like another. Another plane just crashed into the other tower. And at that point we knew and I got in my car and my car. I would have jumped on the subway and went down there. Would've been could have been totally different outcome, but my car was there. So I actually got in the car and I'm driving north and as I'm driving north, all the emergency vehicles are driving south to perhaps there. Ah, Their demise, though some of the know it, But in a way, that's that's essentially the story of the first responders. Police firefighters. They've run to danger while people like me are driving away 17 minutes later, that second plane hit Now Wanna Wolf? The great sports guy. I'm issue was fine. He was really great on Channel two on television. He was he. He made his mark. Let's go to the videotape. And then of course you did spend many years with I miss after that, but He lived right across the street, literally in Obama building right across the street from the twin towers, and he called in to the second plane hit. He heard the plane. Over his building. He said his appointment actually shook. That's how close the plane was. It was right above his building before it made impact with the World Trade Center on his phone call to miss after the second plane hit. Did become somewhat historical that day, right? His phone calls. I guess so. Yeah. I mean, he was very descriptive yet was an eyewitness alive. Eyewitness. So it was. Ah. Yeah, it was memorable to say the least. And I love water by the eyes of one of his gravelly guy. Great. Great, right. A cute old man. You know, I remember back to those days. And I was off the air after that, because at the time I was not yet, um, hosting the midday show. Yet a blood was still lost Susan Waldman and enjoy the MacDonald. I replace Susan Woman months after that, when she went to the network, so all I was doing was sports on Imus and overnights. But they scrapped all the sports and all that stuff. After that, there was basically I'm a soul day and then Mike and the mad dog. But I remember I was living at the time in Chelsea on 21st Street, Nathan Avenue. And I would walk in on every morning because I wasn't working. I'd stop doing sports. To the West Side highway. And for hours and hours and hours, almost like a pep rally. Thousands of us stood on the West side highway, cheering all of the cops and firemen and first responders who were driving towards the site. To rescue people. And after a couple of days we came to the Really depressing realization. That there were very few, if any, to be saved. That if you were in that building that day, you had made it out. Or you died. That was it. I remember ST Vincent's Hospital down by my by my apartment. They are units set up triage units for the wounded. And no one came. No, it was it went from. Ah, well, rescue. Ah, not even though the rescue a cz you say there was nobody to say? No, he not even recovery because bodies were pulverised. I mean, there were a lot of people who jumped out of the windows and I guess sadly. They had to recover those bodies. But yeah, not a lot of people survived actual injuries, no injuries and I'll tell you For about 23 weeks. Everybody loved the cops right. Everybody loved the cops of environment. There were heroes and then and then George Bush came down, so you know what they're going to hear a soon or whatever, he said. I think his approval rating when he did that, with the bullhorn on top of the records is like 98%, and he was great that Tony was growing throughout the first pitch in the World Series. And with all the peril and all the nervousness, and only two months after that, you and I were working together for Amos on the Intrepid won That plane happened to crash in Rockaway. It had nothing to do it a terrorist attack, but we thought it was Dominican. In fact, Thomas is on the phone with Tom Ridge at the time. How ironic is that? He was was running homeland Security, land security and I was anonymous is here We have another plane crash, but With all that said. I still felt hope. Because people loved each other. We respected police and firemen. We we worked together as a community, especially in New York, and they were angry. Everybody.

"The leaders in batting average, last year's batting champion Tim Anderson of the White Sox leads again He's hitting 3 30. And the rookie Kyle Lewis of Seattle is sitting 3 28. In the National League. Two players from Washington head the list Trade Turner is hitting 3 77 Juan Soto is sitting 3 67. Well, now, time for the Lido spot. Susan and Mike Hawkman, and that's brought to you by laborers. Local 7 31 feel the power up here in the booth. I am Susan Woman And downstairs is Tonight's left fielder Mike Hawkman and haven't gotten to talk to you all year. How are you? You okay? Everything good. Everything. Okay? Let me ask you about What's going on here? You know when when teams go into whatever slumps or whatever you wanna call it for all these different reasons, injury or whatever, you know what you're going to come out of it, but it's going to be really awful going through it because you, you know you don't know what it's going to start in you and you know it's going to stop. But it was the hard part as you're going through it, trying to know that it's going to end. Um, yeah. I mean, losing isn't fun. You know, Losing it is Um You know, way show up to the ballpark every day Expecting to win. Um, there does always seemed to be a little bit of a Murphy's law thing going on when you're going through a stretch like this, where it's just You know, got kind of every field of show. You know, every border When Petra goes, it gets to you. Ah, you know, every every ball you hit hard happened. Speak right at someone. You know you had a blooper or something that makes a great play. Um you know you you make your pitch and and the other team, you know, sticks too bad out there and he bloops one in or you know, whatever it it just seems like No, that that's kind of how it feels. But I think that Um Just continuing toe, prepare and work and, uh, you know, stay focused on you know. Whatever you're doing in the moment is is kind of keyed up, too, You know. Moving forward. You know when you get when you have so many injuries like this, and I know it's it's maybe not even conscious that people try and you know that you can't make up for not you, particularly, but everybody else is in this line. If you can't make up for the fact that Stanton isn't there, and judges in their and Glaber isn't there. You can't be anything but you and sometimes you know, you want to do too much. Are you sensing any of that through this lineup? Um, I mean, I think I think the natural reaction is to press a little bit when, um, you know the teams Struggling a bit offensively. I think that you know. Yeah, as a group. I mean, maybe there's a little bit of doing too much, but you know, like I said, um You know, sometimes You know, it's just it's It's a tough one. When there's when there's a few guys line up, just not feeling great at the same time, but I really do think that we're about to bust out of this thing and, you know Just as confident as I am every other day. Show him to the ball Park and this, this all being said, it's It's pretty good to have Masahiro Tanaka on the mound to try and break this losing skein here. Of course, you know, I mean, he's he's He's about it, You know, dependable as a guy as you could want. You know, when he takes the ball, we know that gonna work fast, and we're going through a lot of strikes and you know, going to be in inducing a lot off. You know, soft contact. So you know, it just kind of keep the game moving and keeps you know the defense on their toes and ready And, you know, I think that that just kind of, uh you know, we kind of just feed off that energy and just kind of feed off that momentum. Mike, I thank you very much is great to talk to you Not just see over a zoom call. Yeah, maybe someday. All right. Thank you so much. Have a great game tonight. Of course. Thank you. We'll be back with more of the Nissan Yankees free game show in the WFP and Yankees Radio Network Vision Zero initiative reminds you speeding is never worth it slow down and watch for pedestrians and.

"Back with us. Glad that we could have Gordon Witmeyer. I've given little idea of what's going on. In the central and there really is an eye opener. But joining us now from sport Ako has, uh, it's been great to talk baseball with Barry throughout this whole pandemic, and the years before Veteran veteran baseball sports writer and that is Barry Bloom. Barry, How are you? Hey, Good morning, Marty. How you get good? How are things in Arizona? By the way, things evening out a little bit down there. Yeah, I think that it's a toad a little bit since Now, the implemented no make hitori masking a lot of places close down bars again and, ah, you know, endure eating, and now it's not. Ah, rocket science on what keeps this from spreading all over the place. And they also delayed opening up schools. So, Yeah, We've been a little bit of a of a downturn in the last two weeks. That's good. Hey, We just had Gordon Witmeyer on from NBC Sports Chicago and you know he was very concerned. Ah, you know about, of course, everything that's happening with the Cardinals. And how careful the Cardinals are as an organization and how this thing happened. Ah talked a little bit about the East. But here in the West, it's sort of baseball as usual. But ah, throughout the the other parts of baseball, there's still a lot of concern. Just your thoughts on where we are as a baseball season right now, with with what's gone on Well, I just think that come hell or high water. Now you know how I stood on this. I just think that the baseball owners are going to get through the season no matter what they have to dio. And if sometimes can play the full 60 game schedule, they're not going to play it. Obviously, guys Who go down because of covert. They're gonna wind up getting paid their paraded salaries. Because the whatever it's been there, there's no real teeth in the health and safety. Regulations that restrict players from going or doing anywhere. They're really on their own honor, and you know Medford and the owners can threaten all they want, but really, it's up to the players to be Cohesive and police themselves and you see it on teams like Like the Yankees with Dodgers, the Diamondbacks the Angels, you know they're pretty that players got together. I mean, trout has talked about it. They got together very early on, and they just said We're in this together for each other, and nobody is going out because we can't keep doing this and play ball and have our family friends whatever in jeopardy and bring it home from the ballpark or bring it in, and we just don't know. No, obviously. You could do everything that you possibly can do a strict this thing. Get in the way and I'll be decided to play the Susan once you're out there and in hotels, and they've made a lot of the stakes, not only the players, but Believe in the way they they put this thing together. I? It was meant to have the problems that they're having. I mean, before we go on to the next question without going on and on When you look at NHL and N ba in the bubble, and they haven't had a positive cast because of the way they put this together, and baseballs had 141 tests. Through Friday, not including the latest. You know people with the Cardinals to Europe even higher above that it was 111 players. Now it's about 112 113. We don't know what's been reported around the rest of baseball because they're not particularly transparent about it all so I still think that with all of it, they're going to get to the posters on. They're going to try and play the postage. Well, it looks also like they've tightened up the protocols and I know after the cardinal outbreak now that there are monitors on the road, you can't leave the hotel room and all that kind of stuff. So That sort of creating the bubble from the hotel to the park back to the hotel, and if people adhere to it, they've got a good chance of making it. That really Marty. I mean, big mistake they made was and it really was so simple. Then I'll be could've set a A hotel in every city brought out that hotel. There are plenty of hotels with low occupancy in every city in the country. They could have taken that city and every team would have played there. No other people could have stayed in that hotel. You eat their address. There. You have a training table there if you need it. That's it come back and forth to the ballpark and and that's all. And then you police that hotel and make sure that people don't come in and out, but no, They didn't do that. Players are staying in hotels with other people. They're eating in restaurants where other people are eating on the protocol. Say you're not supposed to do that. But if you put people in those places then then then you're putting them at risk. It became really crystallized to me. I was listening to a Yankee broadcasting nearly going when the Phillies were caught in the vortex of the whole Marlon thing, and the Yankees had to have a serious issue with the Phillies four games postponed. And then they rearranged the schedules so they would go down to Boston. I made two Baltimore so By the way, the traveling secretary of the Yankees is it was a nice kid, Dan. Actually, he was a Ah, it in turn with my son, but the Padres many years it does. So I've known him for a long time. Susan woman saying We don't know whether to come back to New York. You know whether you're going to Baltimore? Then all of a sudden, 20 minutes were told We're going to Baltimore and then had to get on the phone and find a hotel. Really?.

"When Chapman's coming back, but hey, was there last night and sitting on the bench in and it depends on you know how how fast he gets himto. Condition, but he's in pretty good condition, so I'm not. But if you go back, the only thing that'll be missing Evan because of Cain Lee is because every one of those those relievers does something different. Right field. There's none of them the same. And Tommy check McCain Lee with the change of change up change of change up There was nobody like that Chad Green. I can see that he's he can do anything. And last night he was mostly fastballs, which I found very interesting because this team does hit fastballs, but he was so good with it and and moved it around. It was just so terrific with it and JAG Green. You don't dance is used to say that Chad Green had the best arm in the staff. And and he showed some of that last night, but he can open. He's very kind. He also was very calm. I could do this. Yeah, they want me to open. That's fine. I'm gonna close. That's good, too. So I think someone like Chad Green is going to be very, very valuable. So where they think they're playing the Phillies next week? I mean, it's amazing that we're up in the air about this, but I I have no idea. I have no idea if anybody is playing, you know, it's just it's it's day today. This really is day to day. I know with you know what? I'll tell you what I didn't like the four more ST Louis Cardinals. Tested positive today and they said, Well, it's only one player and three staff. Well, hello. I mean, they're people, too, and they're probably not the ones going out and doing whatever I am not sure that blaming the players for being lax on this is the way to go here. Maybe some people were in hotel bars, and maybe they were. I would be terrified to get on an airplane. I would be terrified to get on a bus. To go into a hotel. You don't know who's there? And how about the poor bus driver who has to drive the Marlins back to Florida of the sick ones? Yeah. What a bus ride data has met suit. Yes, seriously, I don't know what's gonna happen. I mean, you're right when you say it's day today, like right now, Yeah, There's baseball tonight. Maybe baseball tomorrow, but I don't know what I think it really is going to come down. What's the threshold for the Commissioner Players Association? You know, they've already evidently they they have told the networks to prepare alternate programming in case they shut it down on Monday, and I've read a couple of good ideas. Some He had said. You know, close it down for a week and start again and play 50 games and go from there, because if you're going to have these little outbreaks, I mean, it's it's It's in some broadcast booth is Bruce. It's two of the three Texas Rangers radio people got it. Todd Callous, announced that he would tested positive down in Houston. He had no thank goodness he had no Symptoms at all, but did get a test because he was near the place and found that he had it. It's it's not because I don't think it's totally because people are going out and saying the heck with this. I'm going to go out and do this, and nothing's going to happen. I think you know people are forgetting what this is, and people are forgetting that a pandemic is a pandemic, and it's not a joke. And it's it's you know, you can say Well, these guys they went out while maybe they did, But my guess is the staff guy who got on the bus who talked to the bus driver who was not. I'm not quite sure there's too much going on here for to keep going. We got now we're gonna wait for the next city to get it Now. What happens to the Brewers that fill is because one guy didn't just Positive and Phillies. They're going to have workouts today. Staggered workouts. Are they going to come here? Does anybody want to go into that filly Visiting clubhouse? Know we're gonna want to go to South Florida play the Marlins. Yeah. How about poor Richard Bleier from the Orioles, who was just traded to the Marlins? How about being do you go? I don't. I don't know that I'd go. No, and I think we could see players decided to opt out. There was a healthy Marla Nissan Diaz was one of their young prospects. You decided I'm opting out. Don't do this, and he didn't even test positive. He was just around this and said I can't blame him. Who the heck could blame him? He says. I'm out and we may see more players do that well and and everybody is until it hits someone near you or someone. I was kind of stunned it that when I'm hearing about Texas, you know the engineer and Matt Hicks, the Second number two radio guy. They're both positive on its and they'd in Texas did a lot. They had the plexiglass. They had everything. Her and it's you know, you don't know you were in the grocery store. Was it in an elevator Did did you pick up a letter? I don't know, You know, but Yeah, yeah, on that cheery note that Thomas Jefferson Well, that sure Here's Here's what we know. There is a baseball game tonight. The Yankees are playing the Red Sox at 707 And will there be a game after that? Who knows what we do know? There'll be game tonight will be listening. You and Ricky Ricardo filling in for John and Well have a good broadcast. American Sphinx is the name of the book. It's an excellent book. Americans thinks Okay, and then go get the book that written by John Chernoff about Iran Journal about Alexander Hamilton. You love it. Oh, yes. Thank you. Susan Susan Woman she'll be calling tonight's Yankee Red Sox game pregame show it around 6 25 The Yankees are gonna look to start six and one Masahiro Tanaka, making his first start of the year after that scary, scary moment. A few weeks ago, he got hit by the line Drive, and Zack Godley is on the mound. Make fans know full well, the pots that godly he pitched great out of the bullpen against the Mets a couple days ago. And actually had a pretty good performance against them as an Arizona Diamondback. He's on the mound tonight. Yankees Red Sox the Fox game, so get ready for fake crowd noises. This may be the perfect night to just watch it and listen to the radio. That may be the way to do it is Fox has gone full bore and they brought back the fake crowd. I thought they weren't doing the fake rat. I didn't see it last weekend when the Yankees played the nationals, but then I saw it the other night with the Mets Braves game. So they brought back the MLB. The show crowd. Quickly with the hockey In the 1st 8 minutes of this Ranger Carolina game, and it's tough. I I'll tell you this firsthand with anything. It is very tough to watch a sporting about while doing a show, and I've tried to do it many times with the Mets with whatever But I did see Carolina go up one. Nothing about a minute in I did see a fight featuring the former legendary island or Ryan Strome, and he did get kind of the best of the fight. So in the 1st 7 minutes of this game in which Henrik Lundquist is indeed the starter, we've seen the Rangers go down one Nothing and we've seen a fight. And we saw the Rangers have a power play opportunity. All that's happened in the 1st 7 minutes. We'll keep you posted. As the show rolls on, We'll come right back and get back to your calls. At 877337 66 66. We'll talk a little hoops later on with Jared Greenberg, who was inside the bubble for TNT..

"From Yankee Stadium in New York. It's New York Yankees 2020. Baseball. To night, the first game of 60 in this abbreviated season, the Agnes here in Washington to play the world champion Washington Nationals, Garrett Cole is on the mound for the Yanks. Max Scherzer for Washington. The game will be seen nationwide. And what a kick off to this Craziest here we've ever spent. And the 60 game abbreviated Major League baseball season with coal and Scherzer, along with our producer engineer Jack Candy Maldonado. And my Yankees company era Susan Waldman. This is John Sterling. And this is the Nissan pre game show. And here is what's on the menu brought to you by food, John bringing you savings Value and rewards everyday shop Food town Now that smart but later on You'll hear from Brett Gardner's staple of the first game of the year on with Susan recorded obviously earlier today, and we'll have that's the leadoff spot and we'll have diamond notes who's hot? Who's not this state in Yankees history. And much more. But first of all, it's Susan on the manager's show with the skipper Aaron Boone, brought to you by your Mercedes Benz tristate dealer's shop online, over the phone or in person at your local Mercedes Benz tristate dealer in my both at Yankee Stadium. I'm Susan Woman, but down at Nationals Park in Washington, D C is the manager of the New York Yankees. That, of course, is Aaron Boone and it's sunny here and very hot. What's it doing down in Washington? We're going to play this game. You think it's Same. It's sunny and extremely hot. We had we had early hitting for about four or five guys, and it's pretty steamy out there. Summer in D. C like summer in the Bronx, you know it could get a little steamy, but And we're hopeful. I mean, I haven't heard anything. It looks like all systems Go on. You know I'm not a weatherman, but I hope I'm hopeful that we had that that window that let's just get this. You know, one of the things that I've noticed, and I heard Liberatore's this morning talking and I was talking to Brett Gardner. People are actually very emotional about this. That it's actually starting. You have eight people on this team, including Kyle Negocio Con who's 30 and Mike Ford, who was it was let go, is a rule five and came back and wasn't even on the roster. They are making their first opening day rosters and the emotion that Mike Ford put on his instagram. I mean, that's going to be wonderful for you to look around and look at all these kids, and I know it's a very strange year, but it's their first opening day roster. Um, you know, I think you know me well enough to know that, you know, Opening day is something that's very significant to me has been my entire life. You know, I feel like it's it's a celebration. It's it's a holiday. It's a celebration of not only our sport. Um, but You know, I've been going to opening day since I was in diapers. And, you know, this year is unique on so many different fronts. And, um, you know, maybe finally getting to this point here in late July. In a lot of ways. When we go out there tonight, it could be the most emotional one. I've been a part of and I think that's for a lot of people and I do see in the lineup Deejay LeMay. He was not in it, he said. He's being funny is just giving him an extra couple of days to come back and get a strength going. Yeah, um, he's he's doing really well. I just thought it was best to hold off at least another game here and, you know, especially with the off day tomorrow, and we've got money throwing a SIM game tomorrow, so he'll be able to get a number of that tomorrow as well. Um, I just thought it was best to hold off and then we'll see where we're at on Saturday. I just want to keep taking it day by day, and you know, in my conversations with deejay with strength and conditioning and training, I just want to make sure you know we're doing right by him as well. OK, and tonight the debut of Garrett Cole, who's been waiting for this moment for since he was a little boy, evidently who came out yesterday and was talking about how pressure is a privilege when somebody asked him about about pressure. How much are you looking forward to that? This is a matchup made in heaven if you'll if you'll look at it. How much are you looking forward to seeing this? Yeah, these air to heavyweight to me. Cole insurers are on the other side. Yeah, I'm excited for Garrett. Obviously, for me having the privilege of getting to know him, you know pretty well, you know, spending the last few months around each other quite a bit in the downtime, You know, just getting a peek behind the curtain about just, you know. The kind of special player person competitors that he is, and I know it's you know, It's been a long time coming for a lot of this, but I would imagine he's at the top of the list for this is a long time coming. I know he's really excited. I know he's ready to go. I know he's physically mentally and and a really good place. And, you know, I'm looking forward to him going out and And starting off his Yankee career. Aaron, Good luck. Have fun tonight. I hope you get this in beast Beast for the rains come Mike Trout. By the way, Who's a big weather person? He was talking to somebody, and he said, you might be delayed a little bit. But there's a window till about 11 o'clock after that. Yeah. I mean, that's what I'm saying. But I know Mike would know better. Good luck, Karen, and we'll talk tomorrow. Thank you. That was the manager's show Brought to you by R. W. J Barn of us..

"Three on two on two out two of our radio program. Joe in evidence 877337 66 66 is the phone number hit a six o'clock of cause. Mike France has a big Mike. He will come your way. Acosta Manhattan with life of the camp, a tie's studio where nobody, nobody, nobody. Nobody on top of that beats down high and nobody So, Susan, do you want to do the update at four o'clock and five o'clock? Because that was brilliant. Like, you know, maybe if I had been that good back then they wouldn't have tried to fire me now. Thank you. That's okay. Hold on a minute. Now, now, Susan. Now that you have brought this up They tried to fire you back then. You didn't know that. Did I? What would I know that I don't know that it's it's folklore, Bullets. War. It was. There was the first day. It was the first day it was like that. Maybe the second update. I heard Get that smart Alec bleep off my air and well with get that smart Alec belief with the Boston accent, lost my heir in prime time. What was the smart Alec thing you said during it up who setting? That's forget that it was the owner's one of the owners. Okay? Yeah, one of the owners of the radio station went on to own these Seattle Mariners. I don't know. Jeff says He never said it so somebody said it, He's somebody said it. It was one of the owners and I was sitting there with Jim Lampley and he said, Just keep going. Just so I did. Oh, yeah, and you didn't get fired. Well, they couldn't. Well, they couldn't know. I did updates for a little while longer. That's how I met John Sterling, actually, cause he did one of those weeks. But they they couldn't fire me because I had a non fireable contract. Yeah, well, my agent was pretty smart on Eso. What they did was was shift me to the overnights thinking I would quit. Which I don't Susan told me told me over the summer. Steve Summers was wonderful. I adore see Steve Summers and I He taught me how to put put together little tape sound on tape and all the things because he knew all of it and it became some back Then, if you remember we were toid for updates on for updates. Five minutes long on the 15th wasn't 2020 was every 15 minutes. And there was no computers. This was ripped and read back there, so I'd make mistakes. I would read what would be on there. And if it was wrong, That's what went on the air because you didn't have time to do it because you had to do a full update. Well, once the games are over in the middle of the night, summers and I would just you know I'd schmooze too. I said I would sing the national anthem to truck drivers at four. In the morning. We will talk to college kids. We had a great time I I allot to Steve Summers. He taught me an awful lot, and then it became something else. Then it became It backfired on them, because not only did I not that I not leave, you know, I got more things to do self. Anyone help put together a hell of a career. Susan Mink always used to say that maybe you disagree, but that the early days of FAA and it was all about the update. That's the way he looked at it like the station was around the update. You just kind of touched on it that there were four updates per hour. They were long Did you get that sense, too? That it was? Update first hosting of the show's second. Well, the only reason maybe he would think that is I see I hated the updates. I know I wasn't because I can't talk I can't read. I mean, I make mistakes. I just wanted to. I wanted to give opinions. I wanted to do that. There wasn't a whole lot of that. What there was. We had a lot of national broadcasters on And I knew at the at the very beginning. If we could get a New York flavor here, it was, too. It was to national. I mean, you got guys coming in from Houston talking about Houston football. Nobody cares. Nobody cares about that They want to talk about there's enough sports here. We didn't need people coming from out of town to talk about. You know to be like referees for for fans calling it and I always knew if we could just get back get to just New York stuff. There's enough here to talk about. Don't need to talk about Oregon. You want to talk about Oregon go ahead, but not Not with so much else going on here. I hated Tio case. It was awful. So you know, make love door that and he was better at it than I I couldn't do it. I was busy trying to figure out you know, took all this time to write these things because she had the little word processors. Remember? They were green. Evan doesn't remember. But Joe, you probably do. It was a green background and white print. Those were word processors, and that's the only thing that you could do if you didn't write it by hand. It was on those things always awful. Awful. Did you that first day. And of course, you're talking to Susan Woman that first day. What was your thoughts on this radio station me on this whole sports station. Did you think it was going to make it? I mean, what was your thoughts about that? You know, I did, Joe. You know, I thought if they did it right it really There's so much sports in this town. There's so much and people talk about it all the time. You know, I was one of those guys. When I was in theater, I would have Kids that worked backstage called Sports phone and get me the scores of shoves of teams. So if it was me doing that, just think about guys like you. I always knew it would work. I know that they did it wrong. And then maybe they paid too much money and they brought in national guys. But of course it is. And it's New York. You got two of everything. Sometimes three of everything, and I didn't see unless they really messed it up financially. Ice had no idea how this could fail. I really didn't see it. What year? Did you start covering the Yankees 87. That right from the beginning, All right. Well, here's here's the thing that I know I did everything. Well, Here's what What happened? One of the things I saw the writing on the wall with the foot the update thing, John Shan. And who was the first general manager thought, you know, I'd like to talk and fight and stuff. And they thought it would be pretty cute to have this girl talking with Pete Franklin, who was you know, one of those nasty guys yelled it people and hung up on all that stuff. They thought it would. Kind of cute. Well, Pete Franklin didn't show up for four months, so they had to do different kinds of hosts when I when they move into the updates, which was really fast was just a couple weeks, I guess, And I actually went to the to the program director than the late John Kruger and I said, You know, you've got all these guys had like lost Klein and maybe Bill Madden and all these people calling Greg Gumbel in the morning. Greg Gumbel was the morning host. And talking, you know? Well, let's talk about the Yankees last night, and you had all these newspaper guys who weren't going to give you anything.

"I am Susan woman up in Westchester down in Florida is my partner for the day, the one and only how he rose, and now we're going to talk to the brand new pitching coach. Of the New York Yankees. By what a way to start a year you start your careers of pitching coach And that, of course, is met Blake. Hi, Matt. It's Susan and how we're here in New York. How are you? Hey, How you doing, guys? Manuel? Okay. Okay, So there you are. It's frustrating. It's your first pitching coach job and you're getting to know all of us. You explain to me what a rap soda machine is. We did it all perfectly. You're getting to know everybody and then it's It's gone now forgetting anything. Everything except baseball for one second. What do you do? Because you're getting people out schedules. They're looking at people. What happens to all your plants as a brand new pitching coach with all these kids? Yeah. Yeah, we throw him out the window at that point, the hard part two is we didn't know how long it was gonna be, because originally it was two weeks. So guys kind of had the idol a little bit. And then reality was it was not going to be two weeks so You know, we're trying to get guys to figure out how to settle in and you know, really adjust the plans for the next couple of months to kind of keep guys somewhat ready shape in case we start back up, but not really knowing. Ah, timeline or day that you know the program for his kind of just You know, flexible in that sense, so it was an interesting experience to go through. Well, I know Yankee fans are to take comfort in one thing in particular that even though Matt might be, you know somewhat of an unknown commodity cross Major league baseball and certainly with the Yankees one guy who loves you is Trevor Bauer. And have you can keep Bauer happened. You're doing a pretty good job so ahead of that. I think we both valued objective information on so we could relate around, you know, you know, trying to stick to the science of pitching and know I let him have his own personal opinions. You know, weight from our conversations and Don't let that bother me, and I think he valued that in our relationship, So I think we kind of just stuck that pitching and you know things around that and think just valuing just all the tools that are valuable to us. You know how pictures get better. You know, and Matt? I don't know if you know this highly. But Matt when he was at a Holy cross was actually a philosophy and psychology Major along with playing, and I'm kind of wondering because you are at the You know one of these people that at the forefront with all of the metrics it go on and the and the different machines that you now use. But I would imagine the psychology and philosophy is part of it. Was there a point in your college career when you were playing that? You thought if I can put this all together, maybe there's something there. When did that all happened? Because you had to me. You have to have both just can't be a numbers in machine birthday. You have to be ableto infiltrate other people's minds. People are not the same and you have to be able to do that. Was there a point where you thought, you know there's something to this integration of all of these things. Yeah, I think as I was playing in college, the writing's on the wall that I was not going to be a major league player. So I was thinking like, you know what the next steps in my background being psychology and philosophy? I thought I Related to people well and kind of understood kind of things that might have made them pick or how they encountered information. And I think for me it was navigating to the other side. The you know I didn't necessarily have a math background or statue background. But my dad is a mechanical engineer, so I kind of leaned on him in terms of how he's approaches problems and we kind of just started talking through, you know, pitching delivery and a science involved. You know, kind of learning more about the body, and that's where actually I met Eric Cressy and kind of girly dove into a lot of the you know, anatomy text and, you know, built on what he was doing, and then I got to Cleveland to their very analytically driven and just kind of leaned on a lot of people there, So I think just trying to piece it all together. As I went with my background in social science was kind of the backbone of it all, and kind of added the other pieces as I went. What do you expect? Then? Maybe you have a handle on it already because there was a truncated original spring training period. But you know you're succeeding. Clearly an old school guy, Larry Rothschild, basically career pitching coach, and now that you arm or of this new age genre What kind of difference did you sense in the way you might have been received by pitchers who had been used to doing it one old school way and you presenting them, perhaps with a different set of ideas. I think the biggest thing I was trying to make sure was. There are obviously a lot of things that Larry did really well to be in New York for nine years, and he had really good relationships with the slayers and the people around and so I want to be delicate of, you know the things that they had done together, but also present the You know the options for you know, there are other tools and other things out there that you guys may not have been, you know, utilizing on a daily basis, so at least want to expose you to those Whether it's some of the pitch tracking technology like rap Soto or track man or some of the you know, camera stuff we're using without the high speed cameras. I think just trying to give them or tools in their tool box, too. You know how they're doing and you hold them accountable to be the best version of himself. You know, A lot of the stuff Larry was doing is going to stay in place, and it's just kind of hopefully adding on to the experience they were they were getting, You know, obviously one of the people who was he's very analytically drivel in and probably just laps up. This stuff is is now Gerrit Cole. And I remember how you don't know this Garrett Cole actually asked Matt, Have you ever made a mound visit on Hadn't And when Matt made his first mound visit, I put it on the air, and we talked all about it and we went through. We actually analyzed it If I had had a record, so I would have done that, too. But how much does it help when all kidding aside when the guy you just sign who is the I think is good. A pitcher in baseball is there is Is really into this and is already talking. You just got here and he were talking to everybody and what you can learn and wants to learn from everybody. How much does that help that Garrett Cole is.
