Senate defeats motion to call witnesses in Trump impeachment trial

"A fifty one forty nine split. The Senate has blocked emotion to subpoena new witnesses in the impeachment trial. The trial is now in recess. Senator Susan Susan Collins and Mitt Romney were the only Republicans to cross party lines and vote in favor of hearing witnesses. After days of arguments and questions from senators a vote on whether to acquit president trump is still outstanding to discuss where things go from here as Wall Street Journal reporter Natalie Andrews from the capital Natalie. Now that this motion the Senate has failed to pass. What's next Senate leader Mitch? McConnell and Chuck Schumer are working to negotiate some sort of resolution to end and the trial would democrats have power right now. They have leverage to bring in a lot of motions which could result in a late Friday nights and given the partisan nature of the Senate. Most of the motions aren't likely to pass so Mitch. McConnell is trying to negotiate a deal that gives Democrats something they want on timing and also oh results in Democrats yielding. Maybe on the floor control that they that the resolution gives them Hong Timeframe. Are we talking about potentially aides. It's around the Senate and senators themselves seemed to be thinking that the trial will end on Wednesday. The schedule that has kind of been pitched to them would be that Monday in Tuesday could be speeches. The senators could give up about the trial on the floor and then the final vote could be Wednesday but that is not set again. That is why the leaders are shading. Isn't the mood likely to become more partisan than ever. Now that this vote has been taken again. It was very interesting to see the reasoning of that. A lot of senators put out about why they opposed the witnesses. Senators like we. We him Kawasaki. Who is considered an unknown possible? Swing vote. She said that she didn't have confidence. That Congress could give the president of fair trial so she was was voting to end the trial early by not voting to bring in new witnesses and information. She's a member of Congress so for her to acknowledge that Congress can't give the president a fair trial. It's striking Republican. Senators have acknowledged. The president has done some wrong. Doing but say the impeachment will be harmful for the country or that. The offense doesn't rise missile of impeachment. So certainly the reasons that we're seeing on. Why Republicans want to end? This trial are broad and speak to the partisan. Addison divides in the country out of the timing work. And all this there are a lot of things happening over the next week What were the state of the Union speech and campaigning? Having vote on Wednesday means that you could break in Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders Mea Culpa. Michael Bennett all presidential candidates will probably go to Iowa this weekend and campaign. Because they're looking at the Iowa caucuses on Monday and then you would have Donald. Trump's stated union speech each which is scheduled for Tuesday and then acquittal. Vote or vote that will likely end in acquittal of the president on Wednesday so pretty big weaken American politics next week. We're looking at

"This is one A.. I'm todd's Willik in Washington the historic impeachment trial president trump began with the swearing in of senators six Democratic presidential candidates debate in Iowa. Virginia tips the scales els in favor of the equal rights amendment. But will it wind up in the Constitution and Major League baseball hands out punishment after the Houston Astros cheated during the two thousand seventeen season and playoffs. It's the domestic our news. Roundup joining me in studio to talk about the week's top headlines carol-lee she's correspondent with NBC. The News Carol. Great to see you. Jonathan Tamari is national political reporter with the Philadelphia Inquirer. PHILLY's Fan. Thanks maybe he is. Maybe he isn't and neutral professionally neutral from Billy Emma Green from NPR NEW YORK. She's a staff writer with the Atlantic. She covers politics and policy and religion. Emma Emma great great to have you things for having me well as I said folks. The impeachment trial in the Senate has officially begun the charges against the president of the United United States abuse of power obstruction of Congress. Chief Justice John Roberts was sworn in on Thursday to preside over that trial. The house impeachment managers enters walked the articles of impeachment across the Capitol to the Senate in a rare ritual. This week the Washington Post called it. The world's slowest missile heading toward the Senate floor the speaking of those impeachment Managers House Speaker. Nancy Pelosi name them to do the job of prosecuting. This case in the Senate Carol who who are these managers are there any surprises there. There were There seven house managers A couple of them were expected. Obviously Adam Schiff. WHO's chairman of the Intelligence Committee? jerrold Nadler Chairman of Judiciary Committee Hakeem Jeffries who's the leader of Democratic Caucus and then there were some who were couple of freshmen Ashman Sylvia Garcia. She's on the Judiciary Committee. But she kind of came out of nowhere surprise she's and the other freshmen is Jason Crowe who's one one of the quote Unquote National Security Freshmen. That were elected In the last congressional elections and and then you have a couple folks who stood out during being the questioning of the during the house Hearings and the VAL demings Is One of them from Florida And then another person who another congresswoman who worked on Who Actually has a lot of knowledge about impeachment who worked Nixon And that impeachment was involved in the Bill Clinton's impeachment and and so you have kind of this this mix and you can see what the speaker was aiming at which is some season folks As well as some of the younger folks to try to give a good representation Asian of her caucus. Emma does this team. That Pelosi has chosen. Tell us anything about how the trial might go. Well when Pelosi announced her choices for the impeachment managers she really emphasized that she selected people who had courtroom and litigation experience. Who would be comfortable in that? Let's setting because the people she selected the burden of this entire process is on their shoulders. They really are the seven people who are are responsible for making the case before the Senate the other thing that she really seemed to emphasize but didn't make this quite as explicit as that. These are Democrats who represent the future of the party. The represent the makeup of the party they come from all over the country from Texas and Colorado California New York doc and they also represent different ethnic backgrounds different points of view from within the Democratic Caucus so with those two pieces the courtroom experience the answer and this diversity. I think Nancy Pelosi was both trying to make sure these were people who can bring a strategic in for the Democratic Party but also symbolically considered represent who the Democrats are now. We also learned earlier today. HOW PRESIDENT TRUMP IS GONNA stack his legal team? We have pat simple on the White House. Counsel Jay Secolo uh-huh trump's personal lawyer wanted his personal lawyers a Ken Starr famous for Bill. Clinton's impeachment Robert Raya former independent counsel and Jonathan Tamari. A lawyer named Alan Dershowitz. Yeah we've heard of him. I mean he's obviously been a hugely prominent attorney for a very long time. Now up to the durst GONNA do for for the president on the Senate floor. Well I mean. He's been one of his most outspoken defenders for a long time. Now and he's a guy who is we know the president likes people can go on TV and make the case in a compelling way in that medium and he's someone who's been doing that for a very long time and He's a combative. Well known. litigator gator and and look the President Lakes again people can go on TV and he likes famous names and Dershowitz checks a lot of those boxes. Carol the question of whether there will be witnesses in this trial on the Senate floor there are forty seven Democrats in the Senate you need fifty one to do anything and that means for Republicans could would compel the Senate to call witnesses Mitch. McConnell has said he's not interested in many Republicans and we'll talk about more of them have said they're not interested what Republicans are now l. saying something different about whether they would want additional witnesses or additional evidence well it seems that the Republicans at least have a are unify a a unified front on witnesses in the sense that they're not going to support witnesses. Vote on witnesses. In the first phase of the trial island they would kick it to after opening arguments which begin on Tuesday and where it goes from there remains to be seen Susan Collins put out a statement statement there are some Republicans who have said that they are interested in hearing from witnesses particularly John Bolton former national security adviser and perhaps now at least on the democratic side. love Parnasse. The associate of Rudy Giuliani Susan. Collins has said she is interested in hearing during witnesses a sheet checking the polls back home. What she's doing that's making her break with the rest of Republicans? Well she has a history of this also I mean. She supported witnesses in the Clinton trial. Roland then voted To vote voted to it. And and so she. She's that there's that piece of it and then there's also She is looking at her election. And she's not the only one I mean. Mitch McConnell this is all a political calculation by the majority leader on you know trying to balance his caucus. Doc is in the sense that there are some who really want witnesses. There are others who it's just not gonNA be politically beneficial for them to take these sorts of votes and then there's the White House and they've been all over the map on this. The president has said he wants a trial he wanted to show and now he's saying he doesn't want that And so I think Susan Susan Collins is looking back home as are several other Republican senators. Now when we talk about witnesses in new evidence this trial is about to get started as new evidence is as emerging and it did this week. Democrats released text messages. voicemails photos shared between left Parnassus and indicted Soviet born businessman and Rudy Giuliani. Trump's personal lawyer others were in those exchanges to Parnassus was working hand-in-hand with Giuliani to pressure Ukraine into investigating Joe Biden and this week left went on. MSNBC talked to racial motto and told her exactly what he was up to. What do you think is the main inaccuracy or the main lie? That's being told that you feel like.

"I love it and i mean we saw that unless primary contests like the people who spoke out against trump. They're not politicians anymore. I wonder how many <hes> in in the house in the senate how many republican politicians are looking at his approval rating in just hoping it'll go down because look they want their president of our guests. They wanted to be reelected. They want republicans to to be in power but as long as he has a chokehold on republican voters across the country they mean nothing they have no autonomy. If they turn against him they will be thrown overboard like imagine being in that position. You've worked your whole life decades rising position a position to become a senator or congressman and nobody what he cares about you. If you turn against the former reality star the sharpie guy you're done. They'll replace you in the next sad. Is that for that party. <hes> you know this is an opportunity for democratic opponents though anybody honestly smile get primarily republicans on the woods. One of them are up for reelection but this opportunity to point out to your state locally. Hey this guy is supporting president that is taking money that has already been allocated for the state to cope with these types of things us guys. Put me in office. Because i'm tired of this uh-huh. It provides an avenue for someone who will speak for the people since we're talking about popular song. Everybody likes members of the armed forces and so the fact that you're taking this away from u._s. Basis assist like that's enough to give me pause and if you end up having these bases in need or you know these servicemembers in need. There's going to be significant outcry. There should be some problems there yeah you would think historically. That's generally one of the things you want to avoid happening. I personally in favour drastically slash the military budget but you have to make the case for why why that needs to be done. They're not making that case. They're taking the money while pretending that they support the soldiers so let's see if we do have someone who will speak for the people we have <hes> senator susan susan collins hopefully not long <hes> but she's still there now so she said each of these projects was recommended by the administration passed by both the senate and the house signed into law by the president and while there is some discretion that he has to move money around. I think that his executive order exceeds his discretion again the week i think stuff stuff and i think that you're not allowed to do that. I think and then you have to say he has the right. You have to preface everything you say couch criticism with he's right though but i understand n._y. And it's okay if but so that he won't read it directly because he won't repass the first phrase of your sentence like okay. I think my criticism was buried. Deep enough to the the democrat and read it and okay so we we do have someone who's fired up. They've all been really milquetoasts mitch mcconnell and he should be <hes> kentucky is going to be hit nearly sixty three million dollars and so he's fired up saying we wouldn't be in the situation of democrats for serious about protecting our homeland and and work with us to provide the funding needed to secure borders during appropriations providence who's trump. I don't know it's the democrats. The democrats did it. I mean sure it's trump is taking the money from it and sure i'm losing using sixty three million dollars to be probably democrat..

"Make no mistake America. A great American again. The Buck Sexton show begins. Analysts. Remember the end of my PD sex. Yes, right now, it's the Buck Sexton show one more night with the godfather, Michael palca in for my friend, Buck Sexton what a night to be here. What a week to be on the radio what a remarkable turn of events today in congress. There's other stuff going on. But I think it's appropriate. It's incumbent upon me to get out of the blocks and say, thank you. Thank you. Thank you to Susan Collins of Maine, just an amazing speech. I I don't know if you sat through the whole thing, I'll try and give you some highlights. But tonight, we are going to pay tribute. We're going to pay tribute to the women of the GOP. And we'll also give some props to Mitch McConnell. But it was the women of the GOP who may judge cavenaugh a almost. Well, I don't want to jinx it because Jeff flake said unless something big happens. I'm yes. But. It looks like judge Cavanaugh will become Justice Cavanaugh within the next twenty four hours. It really does. And it's just exciting. You want to join in on the discussion tonight, you know, the number eight four four nine hundred two eight two five eight four four nine hundred. I'm so excited. Eight four four nine hundred buck which is to it too far. We're we'll happy to talk about this happy to get into some of the other stuff out there. The economy is just in a great place. Unemployment the lowest it's been since nineteen sixty nine three point seven percent. It's almost at the point where. We're at full employment because there's a certain percentage of the population that can't work for whatever reasons physical, mental, just whatever. So we're almost at full unemp- full employment, minimal unemployment just a great thing. And with four weeks to go before the midterms. This is something really good for President Trump. Let's hope people are paying attention. But I just can't I'm bullion if I were doing a word of the day, maybe I'll pull a word of the day out today. I will get some of the some of the big hits from Susan Collins speech today, did you watch it or did you listen to it because I was listening to it. I was not in front of a television this afternoon. I happen to have it in my ears listening. The. Sirius XM satellite radio thing. Had it in my headset. And as I'm listening, I'm thinking, she's laying out the case, she's taking apart every argument against cavenaugh and doing it with logic and style, and then I went back just before the show, and I sat down I watched some of the clips. And then I watched it. I realized the Republicans have gotten it, right? The Republicans figured it out. They staged this moment beautifully. And I'm talking about casting. And everything if you watched it, you know, what I'm talking about. Because Susan Collins up there in the Senate, delivering this speech gave us an absolute masterclass in how to bring your argument to the forefront and delivered it with style. And as I said with perfection, the construction of the sentences, something that should be taught in government, classes, and law classes, how to give a winning argument. It just was epic. But what made it even more important when you watched it on TV, and I'm sure we're gonna hear the numbers are massive. There were two women prominently featured behind Susan Collins. Now, so often we hear that the Republican party is the party of a bunch of old white guys. We had three women featured you couldn't see Joni Ernst she was off to the side, but she was up to. But you had Susan Collins front and center and a very professional. Look, I think she got a new haircut to I'm sure she did, you know, it's all about image. It's all about optics. Susan Susan Collins up there on one side Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia. Republican Senator to the other side Cindy, Hyde Smith a Senator from Mississippi right behind her. So now, you have this moment where we as conservatives have had the tar beaten out of us for the last three weeks being accused of being just the worst people in the world the party. That does not understand women, and you have a woman. Delivering the knockout punch a woman who's known to be pro choice. So now, you have someone that other women, especially boy that was that argument that judge Cavanaugh is going to destroy rove e Wade, you have a pro choice. Women standing in front of the world talking about how Cavanaugh can't do it that in fact that the the people that the the Democrats were worried about tearing apart Roe v. Wade years ago, not only did they not do it. They wrote the argument against overturning Roe v. Wade. So you have brilliantly staged brilliantly written delivered for an audience that would then turn it into prime time response. So after all of the theater this week after all the circus like atmosphere for the last eight days in Washington D C you ended with an epic finish. So Bravo to you GOP Bravo to you, and to the what was it five hundred plus protesters arrested today, I think I'm not sure I think Spartakist got arrested today. I'm not sure I think that that would make sense for him because that would be a good campaign commercial for twenty twenty presidency hopes for for Cory Booker or should have we call them sugar as I taught you guys last night. I found the yearbooks from some of the angry Democrats on the judiciary committee started going through their senior yearbooks to say. Gee, what was in your yearbook Cory Booker had his nickname sugar? And I don't know about you. But I lived in the New York New jersey metro area where Cory Booker lived and went to school in those years in the late eighties and Booker we called cocaine. Referred to as sugar. So why were you sugar Senator? Is there something you need to tell us? And also the guy who said he had groped a young woman at the fifteen in the article he wrote called stealing second or something. Like that Booker. Also had his senior, quote was let's go all the way. So Cory Booker has some spleen and to do, but he may be got arrested today, it's not really an arrest as we saw with Amy Schumer yesterday. It's kind of like being scurried off to get your picture taken. And then somebody pays fifty bucks. You get a ticket, and you go home or you go back to the protest, but there's so much to get to today so much. I'm just so happy about this. And we will take into it. But I want to remember what sparked all of this. And it was Donald Trump nominating. Mr. Cavanaugh, judge Cavanaugh and on the date when that happened. Chris Matthews, the elder statesman and MSNBC have to wonder how much longer he's going to continue in his role. Chris Matthews was on the air talking about revenge. And I tell you all of this all of this anger towards anything. Donald Trump does towards any nominee. He brings forward all of this resistance and obstruction which started the day after Trump was elected. It's a dangerous thing for the Democrats. When you go out and develop all of your missions in life based on revenge. They tell you to dig two graves because you're going to be joining whoever you think you're going to take down remember this from June twenty eighth this year. Chris Matthews on MSNBC following the announcement of the supreme court pick from President Trump. This is time for vengeance. For what happened two years ago? And if they don't wreak the vengeance now with four and a half weeks four and a half months ago before the election. They will not look very strong to their base. And I think they'll be under attack. Yeah. Yeah. That was a good plan. Wasn't it? It wasn't a Chris Matthews. If you don't if you don't go after vengeance. And he's talking about Merrick garland. He was talking about Hillary's loss. I'll tell you talk about backfiring. Because the way the shrill arguments came out without facts, which is one hundred ninety degrees from what Susan Collins delivered today, they sounded like a bunch of sheep oil, especially when you hear the chanting, the chanting, the nonstop shrill, chanting, it just great, and greats and greats. Now, I like to say this is a. A good sign for the midterms, but a month in political terms is an eternity. It's an absolute eternity. So I have sort of a plan that I think the GOP should lay out in advance of the midterms that will keep the interest of those of us who are conservatives who want to try and save the house, although it's a really tough tough event to try and pull off to save the house when the president of the other part when you know, what happens when you get the house and the Senate and the presidency in the very next election, the midterms history tells us it always balances out and the voters will give power back to the other party. So for the GOP to retain the house would be a little bit of a miracle. But I have a plan and will share with you. I also want to hear your thoughts on today. If you have any thoughts on teddy, it's Friday, let's have some fun. And I have a really ridiculous question for you. I know the other day I asked a question about was the what was the scariest movie of all time? And a lot of you.

"I've had a couple of conversations over the last twenty five minutes or so talking through some of this, the president, as you know, does not have a relationship with Senator Jeff flake that relationship is toast, right? So that's gone. He does not have a particularly positive relationship with Susan, Susan Collins or with Lisa Murkowski. It's not like he's going to be able to get on the phone and if he is it. They frankly are not going to find that particularly persuasive coming from President Trump. They have other considerations that they're taking in as they decide where they go on this front. So the president can get out there and this is the lever that he does have to pull and try to persuade public opinion by being very vocal to his base by getting out there and tweeting like he did about forty five seconds after that, hearing wrapped up tonight. Blaming Democrats and demanding that senators vote. He can call, for example, Mitch McConnell, or Chuck Grassley, or his allies over on the hill and tell them that he wants to get this done. He knows exactly what is riding on this and I'll tell you you talk about the arc that we've seen over the last twenty four hours in these reports of grim pessimism. Midway through the day to day. That's because the people that I was talking to in and around that room were grim and they were pessimistic. They knew that so much was riding on judge Brett Kavanagh's opening statement. I am told that the president was particularly pleased with that. That search and destroy line, not advising consent. You can bet he took notice. So at this point, the action is really not at the White House. It's down. Pennsylvania Avenue, Lawrence, join our discussion now, Andrew Mitchell NBC news, chief foreign affairs correspondent and host of injury. Mitchell reports on MSNBC and Nina totenberg Legal Affairs correspondent for NPR, Andrea. I know you've seen it all in the United States Senate, and now you added another chapter to the, you've seen it all memoir it merely for the senators for the audience because the American people, it's a stomach churning chapter because it's a, he said, she said, as it was twenty seven years ago, there were senators who said as Jeff flake was aim to my colleague, Casey on their conflicted, they don't know what to do. The obvious pressure is on those Republicans, and some Democrats from red states who would assumed would vote to confirm because of their their races are on the line there. But the fact that we saw the senators on the panel going after each other, Lindsey, Graham, the cheers that he got from the Republican caucus, but there was a moment there. There was shot. Doc and and applause in the eyes and in the in the affect of some of the Republicans. But a lot of shock because usually, as you know, as a former chief of staff over there, the, it's the my good friend gentlemen from such and such. And this was none of that. And even at the at the Thomas hill here he's twenty seven years ago that I covered. There was a lot of anger, but it was never this kind of visceral breaking of the system. And the other piece of it is that his opening statement was so fiery. And so you know exactly what the White House clearly wanted with the president wanted to hear. We, I saw a tweet from Don Jr. which was the tip off also as to what the president was going to tweet the afterwards. But he broke some China there and Nina's a better perspective on this than I the institutionalists that she is of the court and its history and of the judiciary. But when he it's one thing to come in and qs the demo. Democrats of holding back covering up coming in late, but there couple of things he did to bring up the Clintons and the twenty sixteen campaign a left wing conspiracy in the context of politics. I know a lot of the justices I've been around Washington long enough Republicans, the Democrats they socialize together beyond the the legendary Scalia Ginsburg relationship..
