"She is the only character who calls it very bluntly as it is yeah yeah just don't not going to have dinner with a lot of mummies every night. She says I love that scene of her telling all her different men where to sit and who's going to be and then are you jealous of whichever soldier who got to sit. He's not jealous of you think that character she she does call it like you see it. She's maybe a little severe at times but that's such a moment of you know you get this kind of humor release of her character which is nice right. Because can you imagine how powerful that woman was no I can't I mean it's just it's we'll. We'll never see that again probably hope I hope not but you know but he humanizes her by having her talk about her you know she can't she is so powerful but you can't iron out of single wrinkle right. It's a fascinating character and it just balance everything else in the film because the Alexei sort of Saturnin so lurking so yes menacing <music> a handsome and dietrich goes from from wide eyed everything to just you know she's has to survive somehow indeed. I mean the film Tom. It's so her growth in terms of her. I mean she does lose her innocence but obviously she becomes so cunning so manipulative so powerful in the end ultimately it's there's almost a slight chain that the film is centers that growth so much just entirely in her sexuality but thematically of this woman's rise to power not wanting it but at the same time understanding in order to survive she would have to become that powerful and then being able to execute that plan in terms of a story you know you reference these other stories of great queens that were prevalent in the nineteen thirties this one does really set her apart in that way where you say it is so much about her her growing into that role and taking that power. We don't really ultimately get to see what she does with it but I mean the way it kind of balances her growth. I just can't get away from this film. Being an absolute visual feast. I mean I just the way it combines you mentioned not necessarily having the vocabulary for it but people could say oh you like the music the music as lavish as rich as everything else as as a feast of the senses if you will this film is does not disappoint in that regard. It's just totally sensual when when you know that scene where her she throws the the lock it out the window of the balcony and then it falls through all these tree branches one by one and each each shot it's like a little painting so zooey lit and composed and then she goes down to this foggy or the trees or spray painted white or aluminum actually used aluminum on one side and white on the other interesting yeah I love those scenes set and that kind of those tangled trees palace and you know Sternberg bent twigs on each tree to get the right composition of course he was famous for that spray painting and sculpting the trees and so forth I mean every every object in every frame of this film was twisted bent or broken to to suit his is vision and people to I mean I. See this is the one film where you don't hear that many behind the scene stories but on other films he was he was very very harsh to people needlessly so and that surprises me because he is notoriously harsh and he was notorious for taking the entirety of the credit for a film which are obviously not to say he didn't have strong opinions about everything in the film but there were other people who in fact worked on them that it surprises me there aren't more behind the scene stories of people just out of a certain <hes> resentment I guess of saying why isn't my work being acknowledged and all the credit goes to him. Oh there's one yeah yeah forget about the Sam Jaffe who plays the insane yes Peter Yeah towards has ended production just got fed up with Sternberg and said I'm. I'm walking and Sternberg yells. After you can't leave me you know who I am. I have millions of followers and Jeffey turns and says Oh Jesus Christ only had twelve didn't need millions I yeah and that performance as Peter I mean he so off pudding. I guess which is obviously meant to be but I mean if Alexi is one note menacing handsome he as an entirely kind of eerie performance that Sam Jaffe gives and he does grow into the does has an arc he's so he's so oh childlike at the beginning in a way and become so sadistic by the end right right no. It's just anybody who says Oh. It's only a a bunch of images carefully created images. That's not true it's very wchs carefully structured plot and and each character has an arc. It's it's a fascinating film but it just was too much for the average filmgoer to absorb nineteen thirty four this was I mean Andre Central Walton New York Times who was brilliant critic the best writer they'd ever had in terms of film criticism until nugent came better than crowder better better than policy rather because he didn't dislike dislike movies on on principle and more Donald Hall the previous had disliked movies on principle because it wasn't theater but Sen- weld said no person in America who wants has to understand film as art can afford to miss this film. I'm not saying it's successful and everything it does not saying it's palatable of not seeing that it's entertaining but it it does things that no film has ever done and it doesn't awesome extremely well and I just he said the music alone took once theme from terminates dream and created entire score from that one small passionate by changing the notes and minor key the and stretching them out and all kinds of just brilliant every aspect and that's so true and I love that quote that you were sharing that because it is it's not to say that this you know we're talking about this film on on a podcast podcast called classic movie must where you almost assume a certain kind of everything has to be a masterpiece or flawless and this isn't a flawless film by any means but there is no question that von Sternberg understands what film what cinema can do to set itself apart. What are its unique traits? What are the qualities that make it special and he elevates those things to the highest level he I mean as we've talked about right? It's that combination of lighting and camera work performance but also music and the way you can blend them all at the same time very few films especially I think at this phase of the nineteen thirties were doing it quite on that level where you're saying this is a more than visual feast. This is a cinematic feast of what cinema can be capable of and it's going to get one hundred percent perfectly but it's truly something quite special to see now interestingly enough when he wrote an autobiography he's spent his son told me that he spent many years writing about he finished it in one thousand nine hundred sixty five <hes> and he was on a radio show in New York City called <hes> whatever became of that was Richard Lamm Barsky show and and he would get all these people veterans from cinema to come on his show in New York City those who were there or like Sternberg passing through doing a book tour so he asked her and Burke's Oh i just saw scarlet empress. How did you like it when when the theater he asked him essentially were you happy with the finished product as Turbo said? I never see my films after I write them. I didn't see it okay so Portland parties. He's like well don't you. Don't you think it's important to to see what your finished product is. In Sternberg pauses well hardly Portland Kartesky but I make great interview view but listen. The soundtrack had to be mix of course he saw the finish thing yeah yeah especially if he's I mean he did. He said he conducted the L._A.. Philharmonic to to record the music yes is the score so and he also there was a violin pieces that he wrote. It's in the film correct so come on he. He makes that soundtrack so he did see the finished he hit. You have seen an answer print yeah. I'm not. I'm not buying it but maybe he didn't go. Oh into an actual theater run it with one thing that occurred to me recently was that you know I have seen a lot of still photos from this movie lots and I've seen the laws still voters from Grand Hotel and <hes> name naming the film from the pre code period. I've seen a lot of still photos from them sure okay. How is this one different? There are no stills of a scene. That's not in the finished film whereas the say Susan Lenox Grand Hotel there are still still photos and you say I don't remember this scene in the movie well yeah they shot it but he decided for reasons of pace to leave it out to speed up the film in this movie the everything he shot his in in that movie it's in other words he made the film exactly as he wanted to yeah and that was very very rare and the next film he made they cut that smithereens out of it. I mean it really was severely cut and <music>. <hes> blonde Venus was cut the film before so this scarlet empress being a made the way he wanted it without any interference in the studio extremely unusual and then that it managed to get through the studio relations committee and then the Production Code Administration within a matter of months Ch- I would say miraculous because what happened was I believe that it may have been held back for a number of years but then it was reissued in nineteen forty nine along with love me tonight Morocco Shanghai Express okay. All those films were cut. Yes we discuss love me tonight on this show and how it's when it was reissued issued taffy compared to its original form. It was a big reissue campaign by paramount. I don't know quite why in any case this one again was not cut and so then so the negative existed complete which did not for many other films the fine green positive which is what you use to make sixteen millimeter negatives video transfers four K. transfers whatever that was intact so I mean nothing less than a miracle. This film didn't turn into animal crackers all quiet on the western for all these movies that were just King Kong ripped. Yeah ripped here was cut. You know makes you wonder I mean you could almost endlessly speculate but you have to assume it's not just by chance I mean we don't know but you just can't help but feel like maybe there was some intervention somewhere along the way that someone knows the right way around around the only the theory that I have was that paramount rewarded him out not because his fills weren't making money which this of course did not was terrible failure yeah but they just detested him. They just disliked him intensely. Sleep so they were just they probably told bring look no one seeing this anyway. We've had the lowest box office of any film this year. Don't worry no one's GonNa see not gonNA hurt. Children because children are going to see it right. No one's GonNa take us and indeed on his next film they they went after him and they did punish him and they got rid of him. That's fast and I did see a memo. It's in the the production code convection code files at the Academy or the paramount production files in the says. Let him do what he wants or giving him enough rope to hang himself and that was when he's making devils a woman which was called Capri each capricious on your so it was definitely they didn't want him to have an excuse to say well. My vision didn't get properly executed right. You know what look you made the movie one to make and no one was interested yeah all the what's. What were these seal? The deal was the Spanish government objected to the portrayal of the Civil Guard in devils woman and <hes> some executive there was not in the office of Breen. I think within New York office said how did you let this through this this woman a prostitute you've got to cut this so they could a good ten minutes out of devils woman but didn't happen to scarlet empress and aren't we lucky aren't we lucky because in the early seventies when there was rediscovering.

von Sternberg Peter Yeah New York City Sam Jaffe Alexei New York Times dietrich Portland Tom Alexi Jeffey Susan Lenox Grand Hotel Donald Hall Richard Lamm Grand Hotel Production Code Administration Civil Guard Morocco Shanghai Express America King Kong
