New Depths (MM #3824)

"The mason minute. With Kevin mason. I've always gone through life trying to get people to benefit the doubt, thinking for the most part were all good people. Of course there is the bad, and sometimes I'm amazed at the depth of that heinousness. The new depths we go to each and every day, and this is specifically talking about the condo collapse outside of Miami, back in late June, where 98 people died when the condominium collapsed. Just the other day saw a news story about criminals trying to steal the identities of people from that Florida condo collapse. Three people were arrested in Florida, accused of trying to steal the identities of 7 victims from that condo collapse and surfside Florida and spending an estimated $45,000 through credit card fraud. They didn't get away with $65,000 worth of credit card fraud, because that's when credit card fraud prevention kicked in. And that's the sad news about the world we live in today. Even in times of tragedy, there are always scammers out there trying to get away with something. I want to think that people are good. I really do. I'm just really sad right now.

Belmont Apartment Building Evacuated for ‘Structural Concerns’

"Of residents are out of a home. They were evacuated from a seven storey apartment building yesterday afternoon over fears the condo could collapse. It's an old building, so you know, I just felt like had they been on top of it For all these years, we wouldn't be here. Cora notified her landlord of the crack in her sixth floor ceiling in late July. Engineers came to inspect and on Friday they deemed it unsafe. Recommending everyone evacuate. Actually, it's like a movie. I suddenly like. Refugee is the first I don't have this experience before Towns building inspector says there was no imminent threat of a collapse just structural concerns. But officials say the memory of the deadly building collapse in Surfside, Florida in June ramped up their response. All of us are on a heightened sense of awareness. I think that goes for public safety officials. I think it goes to building owners and building occupants. That report came from WBZ TV S Cristina Rex. Engineers will be back for a thorough inspection on Monday.

Southern's is to remove this elephant from the room. We don't want to see this elephant any longer. We want the room to be empathy for other challenges that we face. I think this government if there's any government in israel's history it is able to resolve this crisis crisis over the issue is this government which is so much i would say united so i mean let's say eighty percent of the cabinet members are all the way for this old agreement which supposed to be renewed. "It's monday july fifth and it's usually not a good sign for rescue teams when you're bringing in explosives we start here. Half a condo building collapsed will now the other half is gone to the best way to continue to search a collapsed building is to blow up the part of it that is still standing gut wrenching. Decisions have been made in florida overnight. Our team is on site. President biden declares independence from ovid. America is coming back together. But officials are still concerned that we're not getting enough americans vaccinated and what's it like to be a college athlete. This morning asked their agents if they do endorsements they can leverage their social media. They can do coaching sessions and get paid the seismic shift. That just changed how college. Athletics work in america from abc news. This is start here. I'm brad milkey pay. Hope you had a good fourth of july wherever you are. Maybe you got the day off today. Maybe didn't either way we're here so let's get up to speed together on what's happening. I realized i said oh my god. Where's the building. there's no building. Don't take anything rob something. That wasn't the way we've just run this morning. The national mystery continues to be. How did a twelve story building with hundreds of residents to suddenly crumbled to the ground in surf side florida and how many of those residents were caught inside sadly it almost seems like we know more about the answer to that second question than the first because in the last several days more and more remains of residents had been found to have someone or a piece of someone that they could bury and and have closure and just have somewhere to prato is so important bresso and since we don't know a ton about what allowed this building collapse that is added a layer of anxiety to an already tragic scene. In fact they canceled fireworks shows in miami last night but after the sun went down a different set of explosions did go off and actually brought what remained of that structure crashing to the ground. Abc's alters their ensure site florida trevor. what happened here. well brad. what we've seen is essentially florida officials. Making what could be considered an unfathomable decision in the past that they say the best way to continue to search a collapsed building is to blow up the part of it. That is still standing. We have experts right now on site evaluating and the contract has been signed for the demolition to begin and that was something that they really have wavered on back and forth over the past several days. They said that it was going to take weeks at one point and then they hurried it up because of the threat of tropical storm elsa moving in this will protect our search and rescue teams Because we don't know when it could fall over and of course with these gusts potentially that would create a really severe hazard and they have to do it in a very careful fashion because as you can imagine on top of wanting to preserve and protect the people who could very well be buried in the rubble they also have an investigation into what caused this collapse and they need to be able to determine which part of it collapsed in which part of it is demolished the carefully demolished it like we saw the explosions go off like they imploded this building. How did this work. Our understanding from demolitions experts is that they have to drill into columns which in itself puts that building with its structural instability at further so they deposits to rescue. Put the dynamite into the columns. And then you wrap the columns with geotech material chain link fence and more geotech material. That takes time. They've gotten really good at demolition. Certainly you've seen videos of maybe former sports arenas they can bring it for the most part straight down the first columns to go. We'll be the streetcars. The next columns to go will be the next. And then the next columns in the next comes. So you're steph lagging the building so the gravity will put almost straight everything straight down but it will have a little tilt to it and the design is that the building comes down to the west away from the rubble of the already collapsed building but that is a very very tricky assignment and actually bred when we talked to a demolitions expert on saturday and told them they're going to do this tomorrow he didn't believe it at first he said there's no way because these things take weeks or months of planning and it is expected as i said as soon as the all clear in the middle of the night our search and rescue operation will resume and we'll go to that pile we'll and that's the thing like so this is i mean this was a huge building. They've been saying they're still in a search and rescue mission even careful not just to go like demolishing the rubble that's already on the ground right which brings all of this. Sounds like would just bring a ton more rubble down out of the sky. So i i guess the uncomfortable question here. Are they saying that. The rescue part of certain rescue is is done here. The way that they talk about it yes they insist this is still a search and rescue mission and they are stressing that by bringing down the rest of the structure. It is actually going to help them with the searching and rescuing because they no longer have the threat of a building looming over them and they will be able to access more areas when the site has been deemed secure and we are given the all-clear which should happen very shortly after the demolition our search and rescue teams will immediately resume their operations. Having said that now we're now closing in on two weeks of the search and rescue operation of a building coming straight down and since the operation began bred to be blunt. They have not found survivors alive in this rubble. How would you describe what you've seen I've been around the water disasters from us. Twenty something is and for me to be straight back to september eleventh. I talked with one rescue worker. Who told me that. She felt like the crews were at the gates of hell. But the only difference this time is you know. We can't find the door ends even more grim a member of the israeli defence force. They have been on the ground helping out from the beginning. They have since left this weekend. That member the ids said when asked after the demolition. Can we find someone who is still alive. And he said the chance of that happening was zero and but circumstances as we saw at the last few days are tuned. Difficult for me to say professionally. That i believe that there is a solid chance to find somebody alive. Wow wow instill over hundred people unaccounted for then trevor. I'm still just confused on the cause of this right like what. What are the realistic scenarios. That could have resulted in this kind of catastrophe because it seems like other residents in the area like some of these buildings remain in similar timeframes. They're all on similar beachfront. Soiling i would wanna know of course and what we know at least so far from the structural engineers who are looking into this is that this investigation will take months. We've also heard from engineers who say that. This building probably had some kind of catastrophic flaw or damage that went unnoticed and maybe construction of a nearby building is what triggered it but beyond that we don't have a lot of answers filmed inside of me. Said run because these building will collapse and what we do know is that there are multiple lawsuits. That have been filed against the condo association board. There are multiple tenants saying there were tens of thousands if not millions of dollars of.

"Welcome to skim this fun fact. Twenty twenty one is halfway over but while the last six months were probably better than the first six months of twenty twenty things are far from perfect. Parts of the us have been baking under extreme heat. A high rise fell down despite multiple safety warnings. A cova variant is wreaking havoc around the world and even the job market is wacky. It's a lot but we promise we're here to make you smarter and the news less overwhelming. I'm alex car. Let's skim this before we get into this week's top story. We just want to note. This story mentioned sexual assault which could be triggering to some listeners. On wednesday bill cosby was released from prison in two thousand eighteen. He was found guilty of aggravated indecent assault. For drugging and sexually assaulting andrea constand. He was supposed to serve a three to ten year sentence but yesterday after only two years the pennsylvania state supreme court ordered cosby to be released to get some context on what happened and why the sudden release was surprising to a lot of people. We phoned up. Fatina goss graves. She's the president and ceo of the national women's law center and one of the co founders of the times up legal defense fund. Starting off i would love to just ask you to break down. Why bill cosby was released from prison. Well the first thing. I should say it was a highly unusual opinion. Mckee amount of the pennsylvania supreme court and so in some ways i wonder if this opinion will end up applying to bill cosby and only bill cosby going forward but the court basically said was that the prosecutor in the case had made the sort of promises to bill cosby that led him to believe he could never be prosecuted then subsequently prosecuting him and using information that had been revealed in a civil case that that violated his due process rights under the constitution. You know sometimes prosecutors will come up with an agreement that says i won't prosecute you on this issue. So people understand that there is no written recruitment but there was a press release and the prosecutor main suggestions. That bill cosby probably wouldn't be prosecuted. I have to say it is odd to suggest that those sorts of loose and non-enforceable promises by bill cosby from being prosecuted around this specific case. But that's basically what the court said. Yeah frankly that was the part that confuse me the most yesterday. It almost feels like a pinky promise. And i didn't know that that was a legal version of a pinky promise. It is illegal version of the premise. Unusually pinky promises. Don't get you very much in the criminal justice system. So that's why. I feel like it's a bill. Craftspeople bad is applying here. I don't think we're going to see an expansion of the pinky promise school. You've mentioned that this feels like it's the bill cosby when you think about the broader impact of what happened yesterday on other sexual assault cases. What comes mind. The thing that is weighing on me is whether survivors will see this very high profile case and think why would i ever do it. I would i ever tell my story. Why would i ever count on a system. That doesn't really serve me. Well and and the truth is they're not wrong to believe our systems don't serve survivors while 'cause they don't ray so i have deep deep worries about the message. The public message that has being sent. I have worries about the cultural conversation. I saw you know celebrities on twitter celebrating. Bill cosby's released it is just so gross in the face of the sixty people who have very similar allegations i think a lot of people associate bill cosby specifically his conviction as a major milestone for what is kind of broadly known as the me too movement. In your mind when you think about the cultural message like what is your deep fear as it relates to broader justice for survivors. You know the me too movement has ever been about one powerful or even a handful of powerful individuals seeing accountability. It has been about survivors. Supporting survivors mean. That is the thrust if makes you that very act of saying me to sort of been circles. People let them know that if it can be okay and that collectively we can drive change and so what i did see yesterday what i hope to see in the coming days if survivors sir rounding the cosby survivors. Saying we are here freeview. We're fighting for something different. And that's the hope and promise in too. It's why i do this. Work is well on super focused on what it is. We can do going forward so that the next generation the next generation is very different experiences. all right. Let's get to a few headlines from the week's news and give you some context on why they matter first up breaking news in washington the supreme court's ruling in a major voting rights case. Here's what went down this morning. The supreme court issued a major judgment about voting rights this case involved to voting laws in arizona. The first says at ballots cast in the wrong precinct on election. Day can't be counted and the other restricts who can collect ballots to deliver the polling places. The democratic national committee said hold up these practices disproportionately harm minority voters in arizona like members of the native american community who often live far away from polling stations. The dnc's lawsuit also claimed that by enacting these voter laws. Arizona was violating the federal voting rights. Act which prohibits racial discrimination in voting laws but in a six three vote on thursday the supreme said actually these laws are legal and the impact of their decision goes way beyond just arizona. At least fourteen states have already passed laws that restrict voting access and this this ruling could make it harder to challenge those restrictions and court analysts. Also say this ruling could dilute the voting rights act because it makes it harder for voters of color to prove that certain factors like distance or unreliable mail service makes it harder for them to vote next up as people get ready to gather for fourth of july. That extreme heat is baking both coasts right now and turning deadly with more record-breaking temperatures on the way here's what you need to know it's been topping ninety degrees this week across the northeast but we felt less like complaining when we saw the pacific northwest experience. One of its most severe heat waves ever towns throughout washington. Oregon broke their all time temperature. Records roads literally buckled in portland and the city had to stop running it. Streetcars after cable started. Melting one town in british columbia reached one hundred twenty one degrees fahrenheit the hottest temperature on record for canada. So what pushed temperatures up this week. Apparently something called a heat dome which is when hot air gets trapped by the atmosphere and starts to pile up over a certain area kind of like putting a lid on a saucepan when you're cooking. The good news is heat. Domes typically only last a few days to a week the bad news. The pacific northwest is not equipped to handle them. Way fewer homes have. Ac and the heat has sent hundreds of people to the hospital and because conditions in the region are normally so different. There's more risk of wildfires and the scariest part as a result of climate change. Heat domes are becoming more frequent so even though this heat dome may be an outlier. This likely isn't the last.

"You'll get fifteen percent of your first set of sheets and experienced an entirely new standard of comfort rights as bomb branch sheets so then. We have a brewing debate about communion and joe biden and his support for abortion. And we had the distinguished writer. Gary wills weighing in with new york times. Op ed that. You were not enamored of what's going on here. Yeah so this this piece at an op. Ed that the new york times ran over the weekend. And it's the latest in a very extensive genre in mainstream publications Often of opinion pieces but it also has a reporting piece flavor as well when journalists attempt to understand what's going on in the catholic church and can't comprehend that it it sort of occurs in different categories than united states political labels like conservative and liberal but when it comes in an opinion form it's generally a catholic or or someone who was once catholic describing why You know a particular church teaching on sexual ethics usually having to do with birth control or portion of why this is not either a progressive enough or consonant with modernity or something the church needs to move on from and get with the program or why conservative catholics are wrong and actually real catholicism or the good way of being catholic is to support abortion and this piece unfortunately falls somewhere in that latter camp gary wills as a very well known. Prominent historian has written quite a bit about the catholic church. He i believe still practices catholicism but the piece is riddled with falsehoods about the catholic church about its teaching on abortion. He claims that the church no longer says abortion is wrong for any reasons based in scripture which is obviously not correct one need only look at thou shalt not kill as the root of why the catholic church opposes abortion a he. Has these very odd lines about how His clipped fingernails or hair. Our human tissue in the same way that a fetus or embryo is There's these very odd just asian. It's that argument so sophomoric here in college dorm it is. It's it's things. I've heard in in classrooms and in undergrad and so to see it in the pages of the new york times i feel our colleague. Michael brennan was right to say that the editors at the times would have done wills a favor by spiking the peace because these very silly adolescent arguments in defense of abortion. And what drives me crazy about. It is not that it defends abortion. I think plenty of people do this. The new york times every day. It's nothing new nothing surprising But it's one in this this like i said drama of pieces claiming that the catholic bishops are wrong to try and central joe biden. That catholics shouldn't be upset with joe biden at all for publicly promoting taxpayer-funded wego abortion without limitation out. And one as i said can support that but don't need to pretend not pretend that the catholic church in some way actually supports this or that good catholic should just turn a blind eye to it. Jim what do you make look. I don't wanna. I'm going to imply something without making a direct accusation here observation that gary wills last month turned eighty seven for perspective. That's almost a decade older than joe biden and think about how old we think. Joe biden is right Is one of the few guys that biden can call old timer My dad is not quite eighty seven. I don't know if i'm going to let him use the remote control. He's eighty seven. Never mind having writing op. Eds in the new york times so let me just float. The possibility that gary wills may have had some help Writing this because he. Oh god bless him if he did you know and and i mean that quite literally a whole bunch of different levels god bless him show him a little wisdom that appears to have eluded him At just recognized that. If this didn't sound like what we've come to expect from. Gary wills. Maybe it wasn't completely written by gary wills but that just as for the second thing it is it i think this demonstrated the catholic catholic bishops are for a long time have made this very clear point. It is one thing for any catholic to say. I don't agree with that part of the church policy and distributing the church unlike any of it but on abortion. It's a different matter. It is a big flashing neon signs. Say what were you know. There are lots of stuff about eating meat on fridays during lent. That's no no but supporting the ending of humor. Innocent life is a completely different. Stephen a completely different category than the death penalty. Which you know. The catholic church doesn't support that one either but they recognize killing life in the womb. That's totally that life hasn't even begin. It's it's all the experiences of human that that is a creation of god. You don't have the authority to say no. That's not necessarily you're out of there. And along comes. Gary wills age eighty seven to come along on the catholic bishops. Are bis. Pulled this out of there. You know from under their robes reasonably. This has been a long standing church thi this is inconsistent with churches. Newnan but i think freaks out the the A certain number democrats and certainly idea that joe biden who you know. Wears his faith on the sleeve when it's convenient The idea of him being denied communion. I think this will be a slap in the face to the biden family to whole bunch of democrats. And i think this would really democrats who are willing to soft pedal their anti-catholic anti-catholic attitudes Their knee jerk bigotry. Their snyder jokes and all the stuff that comes out against evangelical comes out against mormons Really anybody of any religious faith of the christian sect and certainly the orthodox jews other forms of faith. Muslims buddhists are really afraid saying that the critical of they wouldn't dare think of that. Because that's that'd be seen as being anti anti multicultural. But i think if the bishops make this move. I think you'd see democrats. Just come way more open about this and they'd be really livid about this unfortunately like the catholic the catholic bishops do not. There's this entire metallic. Well it's not popular may polls indicate that many catholics disagree with us. The bishops don't care they're not in the popularity business. They're not they're not running for any office it's the entire concept of inst- a one catholic estelle church the comes along and says this is right and this is wrong and we don't care what anybody else says. We're not going to bend to popular will. We don't care if the media doesn't like it. This is what we've said. This is almost inconceivable to vast portions of the political world by their Approval ratings observe. Is that we live in a world. Rescue crews are still searching for survivors, but no one's been pulled alive from the rubble since the early hours after the building fell Thursday. NPR's Brian Mann joins us now from the site of the collapse in Surfside. Brian. Good morning. What do you see Right now? I mean what's the status of the recovery effort? Good morning, Rachel. Yeah, it's a massive operation. Here. You'll hear emergency vehicles around me where I am. It's a searchers are already out again through the night and into this morning. One thing, though, that has just plagued this effort is terrible weather. We just went through another massive lightning storm rain just pouring down on the rubble pile. It's It's tough work here. There is some good news. They managed to extinguish that terrible fire that had burned through much of the weekend inside the debris field. That's a major success and structural engineers are down with these teams as they dig trenches through. That's that's helped them to find more remains, and what's happening now is that authorities are taking the debris to a warehouse to look for more human remains. There also Starting this investigation into why this building collapsed. A lot of questions, of course, swirling around that 2018 engineering report that raised concerns about the building structural integrity and also errors that it found with the construction of this 40 year old condo. Right. So this is been central to your own reporting down there. This report in a story that aired yesterday it shed details on this engineering study. You found there was a meeting with residents and a city official in 2018 a document that you got your hands on indicates that the town building inspector assured Residents of the condominium that the building was in quote. Very good shape. This is despite that engineers warning that things weren't so good. Structurally, the mayor of Sir Side I understand was asked about this yesterday. What did he have to say? "Did you know that. The hot seat for coaches was meant to represent the electric chair. I just think of the green mile. And i think of the electric chair that we taught me a lot scary times taught you a lot what to teach you just about how terrifying that whole process was back in the day. You didn't know the sponge and if there wasn't a spun it is you didn't share was terrifying. Of course i did walk to your death puts it in front of you and it's like here. This is exactly how it went down. And if you were a jerk to the guards they could not what your sponge and that was not good so you thought being walked esca what. You're giving me a look like you had back in the day. They had to wet the sponge to make a more pleasurable experience holidays. They did because then when that one guy didn't do it that one lady got one guy. Got cody what am i doing here. That's wrong well. You didn't know that you learn could imagine that you learned from the green greenway. I was like sixteen ninety. And that's when you learn about things like this ninety nine it was twelve. That's when you learn about walking to your death being an unpleasant experience all around right. I mean i guess my look is that like. Did you think that the death penalty was humane. Before you watch the great the green mile. I would've back. I'm going to bet chris here. It's just a concept that you understand the you know but until you see it you're like holy shit. They really do. Just fry a human being like that. That is startling to see agreed. No disputing that. The frying of a human being is startling to see when you know it. Let's get back to my wheelhouse. What would you guys. Final meal be asked again. Why is jason lockenfora. Putting brian flores. In place being fried. Mike zimmer is also there. But don't think zimmer minds like you don't think reminds hans no guys. We just learned that. It's the electric chair mike zimmer. He's like i'm with stu. Gods on this mike. Zimmer doesn't mind a good. He's he's like my this is what always read me because i'm perpetually. I'm perpetually suffering from winter in minnesota and that's fine. hot seat is fine. This is why. I like to think of it more as a person walking with white gloves. Just kind of turning up odile. Lana seat not an actual electric chair. That's been more. Morbid is just like someone maybe like butler s kind of walking in white gloves and just like either turning a knob ra like pushing the once or twice and then you know worst case little redskin like you know. I'd say you know second degree burns not even second degree second degree. Look a little sunburn if it's like ninety five degrees on your butt. Second-degree burns are still bad. I think we need to re appropriate the hot seat to mean like what billy. It's a car seat heater and the person is driving around in a hot climate. I think that's you know you get a little trap. Daf years do never escape. The origins ultimately every time as conversation about the hot seat. It's going to be googled. And it's going to be referred back to the electric chair. I think we need a new phrase. I think you've gone too far. Once you've taken away. Stu gods his hot seat. I think i think both culture has gone too far where we need to keep in sports. Yeah was divided by walls says the guy who celebrated a day home run by miguel. Rojo's my starting a lawnmower and waking. But i'm not the voice of the marlins dan. I'm the voice of billy gill. You just apologize to the marlins for saying you have less interest you publicly apologize to the marlins for saying that you have less interest in than publicly. Say listen i i have more important things in my life to that you to anyone really right so like i don't mean to say anyone but legates it's it's just a matter of fact i have more things going on right now than watching meguro. By the way they're giving away like a bobblehead that's just giant shoes and like a tiny body on top of it of macau has because he's a shui as chris would say i still love giveaways. I love him. Did they purchase all your allegiances by sending you one of those beautiful red uniform shirt. Now what do you mean. Purchase my allegiances. Now dan i was. I was eight you know. You're like sea level influence. Serb still still in the mix which is fine. You just want to be in the mix you know. Things have gone down. I'd say with this show. That may have moved his off the a level list but sea levels fine. You know what has gone down with the show. You guys got downgraded. You were the only two got anything here. I don't know why weighty as my giant and were why only you to marlins guys. I'm a mall guy but we talk like we're actually enthusiastic about it like enthusiastic about anything. Let's limits a fair comment argument against gotta care package from the panthers. Yes yes right smile when you got it though and i. You know. I didn't do everything i don't know who on the show is someone that the dolphins think highly of but i was surprised to see that a cbs. This is to gaza's alley right here. Cbs sports just had a list. They put out a list of coaches in football on the hot seat. Saw that did you see the surprising thing on that list yet. Bryant florez was on it. How brian flores doing on that much lie. That'd be a lie but this happens all the time i think. It's jason lockenfora. Doesn't this happen all the time. Like he's pretty credible and he tends to report things and they tend to be right and fan bases often say this guy is getting it wrong but he doesn't actually get it wrong that often. This one's a little more nebulous. It's a little harder to prove. But we're in agreement that brian flores has exceeded expectations every every season correct. Like that's not. I don't know how you go from exceeding expectations every season two. You're on the hot seat. I don't know how that happened. I would think they would punt onto honestly before they would. If like this season upcoming season goes poorly for everyone. I would think that they would get rid of two of before. They would get ready of brian floor. One you have to have nine coaches on the hot seat in july dan. You just start picking out names. Okay like you just start making cases for anyone. No he had david kelly on the hot seat. He's never coached a game before. But when you have to have nine it's an awfully random number nine actually writes in the story. If things go poorly in miami. I believe floors would actually win. A power struggle if it comes to that so he's writing in his own column that he thinks brian floors won't get fired if they have a bad season. So that was on the hot seat. I think the blurb underneath this story is him trying to tell you that. There's things brewing in miami because there's a suggestion of a power struggle. There's a suggestion. It says here. Constantly running out coaches and players who are just selected the previous year and put him critical praise positions as an unusual way of breeding chemistry and cohesion. creating that other played out seaward culture. So i feel like there's kind of a little bit of the van. Noy thing happened. They changed coordinators little bit. And there's You know maybe some things brewing there. And i think jason lockenfora just wanted to tell you that he knew that by including flora's on this list now wants clicks that it works. Look you clicked on it. I did on its to god's clicked on it. It's the reach. He's got five clicks going regardless. I mean it's coaches on the hot seat. I don't care it's july. September november december. You put that article out working on it. I feel like the articles should be headline nine teams where things are brewing while i was just jessica because wittingham brewing other than coffee..

"Their jobs. Some measure of competently. I just i don't know what else to say and forgive me for being at a loss for words. And i'd also don't know how to transition out of that into the normal stuff that we do every day but just know that there is plenty of grief to go around in south florida because this sort of does force empathy on you because any of us. Can you guys think of any other examples like this. The only thing. I could think of was plane crash where we could all just sort of see ourselves in that position of life taken away in a flash should probably just encourage people to support right if they can she go to support surf. Side dot org if you can give anything. They said they have plenty of supplies. Now and they're just looking for money to help out with any funerals and stuff so forgive the clumsiness of transitioning from that into our normal sports conversation. Because there is no real good way to do that but billy i did want to talk to you a little bit about what is going on with the marlins because first of all they're run differential suggests that they're better then their record would indicate in last place that they're run differential is kind of what the mets is. The mets aren't quite as good as they seem. And the marlins aren't quite as bad as they see matchup plus nineteen marlins plus seventeen only two teams that are plus in that division. But what i wanted to ask you. Billy is and i know it's easy to make fun of the marlins. But their attendance figures this over three the first three games of that washington series. They drew sixteen thousand total fans which is worse than the minor leagues. And one of the things that i'm concerned about when it comes to that team because i've told you before that it's so very hard to outsmart everyone else who has money now that all the teams with money no how to exploit market inefficiencies and there are fewer of them because now the dodgers are doing the same sort of stuff that the razor doing that. Everyone's doing but the thing. i'm pretty sure. Do i have this right. That chisholm is the only position player that they have. Who's under twenty eight years. Old the regulars billy. Because i know they've got some guys in double a. That are super exciting. And you you got to start thinking about when it is that. They're going to be here. But i do find a bit concerning beyond you know last year being something of a mirage in a small sample size even though they're better than their record would indicate i find it concerning that they don't have young players who are contributing at regular positions. That's not that's not great. No matter how good your farm system is i mean. They have young pitching at an ahold. Brian anderson is. He's twenty eight. So i guess he's right there I mean yeah. It's the best but you could replace some of those if you have people come up. It seems like they're going to trade starling mar day at the deadline. Which is disappointing if they do. Because that's the guy that wants to be year and someone that they got. I mean he's not a one on team he's probably like a two or three at best but that someone that you could probably get reasonable price but if they trade them for prospects that it's kind of a lot of the same i mean in terms of attendance. There's still not open at one hundred percent not that necessarily changes but they do limit how many people can sit together so like if you wanna go with a group of people. You can't right now that'll change in july. I think july fit. They open up to full capacity. But yeah i mean. I don't know it's a it's it's a strange thing. I think that surprising. What's happening this year. If you were to have looked at last year you say hey. This is good. People are taking steps forward right. They've had lots of injuries this year but every team has injuries But i don't think anyone thought like this is the year that they're going to win the division. I'm just concerned about the fact that the position players that they do have march as the one you're most attached to as a among all of them were him and chisholm or the ones you're most attached to as position players correct I don't know. I don't know i don't know that i would be that attached to i think right now. Jazz is the person right. If you're looking long term because it seems like the writings on the wall with starling. Why haven't they talked to him about an extension if they were actually interested in bringing him back the deadlines coming so it seems like he's probably going to go. It's so rare for a guy like that to say he wants to be here. But you're saying you're going to be bad. Be bad with young people right. I i just i didn't even realize i'm clicking. Some of these names their thirty thirty one thirty years old doesn't offer you a lot in the way of promise and i know. I know that they have guys in aa who are coming up but when they're starting lineup. When you can't find young people on it and anderson is no longer a young person and you kind of know what he is at this point right. You're not still sitting around waiting for anderson to blossom and develop into something enormously. Wonderful right you kind of i. I don't even know how attach how attached argue to anderson leaving sterling taste thirty two and this is by far the best seasons ever had in his career. The thing that is concerning you're talking about the lack of youth and the team. They made the big trades to get rid of everyone. This is the fourth season since that happened. And the fact that you only have really chisolm the show for in terms of top level hitters and even he. He started really well. But he's kind of tapered off a bit but it's really only top level pitchers you have as a result of all these trade cody. Are you following this. Have you lost interest in this team again. I will say this again because everyone loves to. The marlins fan loves to say that. I'm always bashing on them. They're better than their record. They are not a last place team. It's a lousy division. They are not a last place team even though the record says there are a last place team but i would imagine that the confluence of events where the park is kind of dead. You don't have young players. The the the the sport is now in place. And i didn't think this would happen in my lifetime where no hitter is just another game where nothing's happening another boring game where nothing's happening because the no hitter is so common and you've got so many guys out there who are able to throw like ninety three mile an hour. Shane jumps it's just this offense. I can't get into it. I mean it it. The pitching is great. I mean sandy alcon tires legitimate stud but it's just like i miss lewis castio. I'm i'm not like i know i'm kind of going for the joke. There with these like old marlins players but there just maybe a time in my life like i cared so much about that in field. I won't point when we had directly. Alston's alice lewis castio. Mike you were also like seventeen years old. Which is why you cared a lot different now. You have a life with responsibilities. Child that you're taking care of. That's why you don't care as much because jazz isn't as exciting as louis. Casteel at good arguments more excited steel has never sliding into third base crossing his arms. Pimping out a triple what seat. Dan don't pregnant. My way interrupted him soon. Back sentences negative no hitters just any other day words a boring game right now there. I mean you can't tell me the no hitter negative evaluative. He's right though bill. I mean nobody cares. There was like few this weekend that no one knows about. That's not true but if you would know if we leave you shouldn't have stopped on that train of like niamh okay if we don't care about no hitters we definitely don't care about combined no hitters right. That's no stays. I saw the cubs tweeting combined. No hitter on thursday income on but our high school kids caring about this field. The way we cared about mike. Low allison's all hysterically know that infield won a world series man. That's part of it. You mentioned lisa. Casteel he's He's a reds pitcher. And i don't know if you guys saw this. I don't know if you guys saw this over the weekend. This was crazy though this this guy throws a lot of guys throws ninety mile an hour changeup but he threw a pitch to a kuna..

Brian anderson sixteen thousand seventeen south florida Mike Shane last year Billy louis fourth season mike july three Dan ninety three mile an hour this year first three games two anderson twenty eight
