"Discussion about the fact that the Bush campaign was arguing equal Protection Clause case, essentially saying there were gonna be different standards for counting the votes in different counties in Florida. There 67 counties, and as you know, there are many been machine recounts, hand recounts started and stopped in a number of different counties. So part of their argument is that the boats were gonna be treated differently if they were counted in different ways in different counties by telling us our federal jurisdiction. Where's the federal question here? Federal question arises out of the fact that the Florida Supreme Court was violating Article two Section one of the Constitution and it was conducting itself in violation of Section five of title three of federal law. It was a claim. That having wildly different standards for counting ballots in different counties, all for the same election, with no uniformity violated the equal protection clause of the Constitution. I have to admit when we drafted that claim, which was just a few days into it. Every one of us thought. Wow, this is this is pretty weak. I mean, we were kind of like I look. Much of the complaint was outlining what we believed was likely to happen, but it hadn't happened yet. It was simply looking forward. Here's the chaos we believed could could unfold and if that chaos did unfold, It would violate equal protection. What was fascinating. About how that litigation played forward is is. It is a claim that started out quite weakening every day got stronger and stronger and stronger. Essentially, what happened is everything we had predicted that initial complaint came true. The other standard lists Arbitrary chaos, County by county voted destroy spring for his health. Queer. A voter's intent can be discerned. Even if they don't do what they're told that supposed to be counted, it was clear that Broward and Palm Beach counties Had applied different criteria to difficult balance that that's just not rational. Bush folks also arguing that there was essentially a changed the Florida law that the Supreme Court Florida Supreme Court had made changes to the law. After the facts kind of usurping the Legislature and what they had already decided about these counts. But you remember to the secretary of state at that time, Harris Had gotten involved had stopped and started counts had said deadlines for she couldn't stop. It's like the counts herself. But she had set deadlines for when they would be certified, which states secretary of State does so There were a whole host of issues, but you know, essentially it was about those votes and whether they would be treated fairly. If you could treat them differently and help them differently..

And we're not going to try and stop anybody this time around excuse me. During the Bush gore election, if your member back during their election. Okay. Be gore was actually winning in Florida. Yep. And there was a story out that night at the worst brothers got in a fight down there in Austin, where do you cover? And then all of a sudden the next day, you know, they come up with the hanging CAD deal and all that stuff. You know what I mean? And, and then it turned around and want and, and I you know, I think it's a travesty that this kind of stuff is is allowed. Oh, it is the Florida constitution requires that when any any election that's within a half a percent has to have an automatic recount. So the state of Florida's supreme court Florida's surpreme court ordered an automatic recount, and that was when all these lobbyists, and staff members mostly from time, delays office, and Brad Kavanagh and John Roberts went down to Florida and did the whole Brooks brothers riot, and, and, you know and. Took this to the supreme court. The supreme court stopped that recount from happening. When is so, so this consortium of news agencies got a hold of all of the all of the ballots, loaded them up into trailer. Trucks, took them up to New York City. Cowherd them for the entire year two thousand two thousand one and in November two thousand one published an article excuse me, two thousand two. Yeah. No, it was. Yeah, it was a two thousand. Yeah. It was it was the after two thousand one so it must have been December of two thousand one. They published an article that by any measure, no matter how you countered at hanging chads pregnant chads, you know, missing CHAD'S ten voter, however you measured. It Al Gore actually won Florida but they buried that in the seventeenth paragraph because nine eleven just happened and they didn't want to diminish the credibility of George Bush during a time of national crisis, but absolutely spring court stole that election. Yeah. Yeah, I just, you know, I I don't know. You know, I think people time for people to stand up and say enough that stuff. Yeah, I'm with you. Absolutely. With thanks a lot for the call. Erica, albuquerque. New mexico. Hey, erica. What's up? Com. Great respect for civil just wanted to let you know that sort of thirty some years experience with this abortion, debate, I grew up in her life in a very Catholic family in Wichita Kansas, during the rental Terry days. Oh my no longer pro-life. I remember being drug alone to rallies, I had an uncle who literally chained himself to the doors of George killers of worship clinic to try to keep it from opening day. And of course, we know what happened there years later towards Keller was killed walking out of church family, right after the twenty fifth time Bill O'Reilly called him tiller the baby killer. Yeah. Yeah. So all that said, I moved away from Kansas, the young adult just to get away from all the toxic city and, you know, came to my own understanding in my own beliefs. Now, I completely support woman's right to choose and have promotes in my life. Once I got out of that bubble. But what I'm saying is being around that bubbling, how most of the people in my family haven't they haven't changed. They've never even left that little bubble very much ever experienced anything else, and truthfully when we talk about hanger, abortions and protecting women. Do you realize that they don't care if we die, they actually think that that was like a well, that's a consequence of you, having sex thing is, is that they're all hypocrites, because my mother had many children, enter family. I think eight girls and I can speak to the fact that I know that I was conceived before my mom was married a lot. 'cause we're Q and you know, this whole sex is only for marriage, and we don't believe in. Control and all of that, that's always bothered me too, because they all supposedly practic-. Is it called the career method? I forget what it is. But basically, they count the days on the calendar, when they shouldn't have sex because they don't want us to call the rhythm of I was a kid. Isn't that plane God? You don't wanna you don't wanna take birth control. Because you say that you're trying to play God as getting pregnant or not. But if you're counting days, telling to get pregnant on certain days, you're still playing God. It's just a different riskier. Method hypocrisy is just had it. I've had it up here. I'm sure people in this town are hearing, my voice and saying, oh my God. I can't believe she's actually coming out against it, but I've had it and in an saying what I think we are. We are in danger women are going to die, they don't care because that's less people at the pool, and they'll finally have their wish to make this a religious state instead of a free one. And thank you for your time, and respect so much they welcome. Thank you. And thank you for sure, in that story, I would submit to you the women are already dying there. There are large chunks of this country, probably majority of this country, where the nearest abortion clinic is hundreds of miles away where the states of impose requirements that make it very difficult very expensive for a woman to get. Abortion women are once again doing back. Alley abortions women are doing.

"Sugar. Yeah. But it was we went I remember sitting with one of the other writers, whose none of her sketches also got in the show. And just like this is great. But also like, ooh. Got. Yeah. The head writer of that who I wrote like some other comedy for our calls newspaper weekly magazine had a comedy page. So I wrote that might co writer for that was the head writer of this sketch group senior year gosh, and he just got nominated for Golden Globe. He's killing it. I'll watch got in. He was the person who created and is executive producer of kidding. Oh, yeah. Very show. Have you watched? It all I have not sorry tape whole, STAN, we're still Facebook friends because we are good saucer out college, and it's like really cool to see how like amazingly successful. He is and like hell talented. He was college writer like he was like my writing bud college. That's great. What we're where he writing in the in the paper. So we Hanuman type articles or. So we would take SOS page three of our magazine called n new. What have the top part of? It would have the space for a real article written in a funny fashion as we scour the news and find like actual things that happened insane. So you'll weekend update kind of kind of inspiration, but maybe a little longer than. Yeah. So it was like real real news. We would rewrite just throw jokes and nice. The only one I could remember this is also morbid was like in like this woman in Alaska got mailed. Her father's feet like the morgue messed up, and they mailed her and she opens packages like her dad's speed, which is horrible is horrible. And we're just like that's insane. And wrote like this whole piece about like like. Like if this is true. What else is true like jokes? I have them somewhere in my apartment. I have should find them. Shocked. She graduate from northwestern in journalism. Minor minored in psychology. Okay. And then from there you that move immediately to DC. No, I moved to Florida Florida. Okay. We're in Florida. I was in south Florida. I was working in Fort Lauderdale. Okay. Yeah. I it took me a while to get a job out of college. Like journalism started going downhill before a lot of like other industries, like the two thousand seven eight recession was kind of like a few years before that was preceded by like all that happening in the journalism industry. And so none of my friends could jobs off college. Like, I remember everyone who graduated the year before us. We're like picked up to New York Times, the Washington Post, and you know, San Jose Mercury news, and none of my friends, create jobs. And so I get this job in Florida, which I hate fitted. A hated it. I remember leaving my job interview and driving actually airport and crying because I knew they're going to offer me this job. And I knew I knew I had to take it as I moved on there. I covered the courts and the legal system. So Florida Supreme Court Florida legislature. Broward circuit court, which was famous because that's where the body fight over Anna, Nicole Smith. Body fights took place mostly covered as there for four and a half years while and then I came here. Holy cow there for that long longtime. Did you do anything with like improv comedy theater when you were there? I did not it was your creative output during that time anything. No, I worked a million. I worked like a million hours a week looks. Yeah. It was I hated it. And I think a lot of it was just like just so many hours of work and working for people who are just like bad, humans sucks. There are few areas. Where I remember writing an article there was like a lawsuit over thread counts where they filed a class action suit against bath. And beyond claiming that they were lying about their thread counts. I remember writing the lead the article like the first sentence of the article was something like consumers are are claiming. They're getting short cheated and they're not going to. At lying down. And I was like now. And that was. That sentence was my creative output for four and a half years. Oh, remember, my boss being like, okay. That's a little. Well, let it they let it. Oh. That's that's great. That's awesome. What inspires you? Or what motivates you moved to DC or so I always want to live here. Okay. I grew up Philadelphia's on super fire shirt and become here. A lot for field trips. I'd friends who lived here. They lived in Bethesda. I went to journalism camp with them in school, like cool cat. Existed in journalism camping's s and I want and they love him, but thous-, and I remember coming down and visiting them senior year and being like, the fessing the greatest place in the world. And I wrote like a college essay talking about homeless. I wanted to live with that stuff. W was like Where'd you either GW university of Maryland one of them asked like where do you see yourself in ten years, and I'm like living in Bethesda? Thousand. Like every like every normal twenty eight year old in America who who's making it. But that's sorry. Does. I loved it. And it just always wanted to live here. And like the one thing that I that. I hated about more th- western was I wasn't in DC. And I applied for jobs here for years. And finally, my my mom got sick. And I knew of this paper the paper where works before this. And I never super wanted to work there. And it just reached the point where I was like I can't job in DC everyone in DC in journalism is like to cover journalism DC you need to cover journals in DC, I'm like, well how. Like, I can't get the break into that. Sure. We'll give it to me and this place. I knew would. And so a resupply was like all right to just not be in Florida anymore. I wanna live closer to home. Sure. An applied for this job. And got it. Cool. Brought me to DC which is great. If it's here for almost eight years now. Eight years was Krino. That's mathematically wrong. Almost nine years almost nightmares. Wow. I did something very similar to what I did. When I started college. Which is I joined a million things like when I first moved here. I play social things I play on a softball team kickball team, which we named the Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Great. I was in like a Jewish dinner group of beer level club during like a million things. Yeah. And met this friend, Amy and Amy found out about what and just hung about this. And she she's about this guy. She liked and in the process of Tommy about this guy. She likes. She's like he does improv and I took this improv workshop, and I told him and he wasn't even excited about this. And I was like I'm gonna pause your story. We'll talk about those guy in a second what improv class, and this was about a year after my mom passed away. She passed away pretty shortly after I moved to DC and part of by doing all these things was just to like not be sad distract yourself like to just be busy. So what? So what I'm be sad. An Amy told me about cold wet improper all workshop, and I. Google that. And I was like we're taking this. Yeah. We signed up in fall of twenty eleven okay. And like immediately fell head over heels in love with it. And that sort of how I found it was very chance like off the cuff being like I took an improv shop, and he didn't even care. And I was like I care tell me. And then I literally have done it almost every week since then it's crazy. So do you know who was leading that first class, but he chance who is leading her workshop. Yeah. It's like a stretch. I think it might have been Bill DP arrow. Okay. I think I could be wrong. That's my guess. Okay. So you take you take this by yourself or you went with this Amy, so Amy I registered for level one which will stop by JC. Okay. Laura Westman was his TI because she was amazing and an Amy is she's very Taipei. Like, I am and we made our level on class or one. I at the time we made them practice almost every Saturday while instantly started a practice grow instantly, and silly we're like we're going to nail our student. Showcase an only one by level one. Took it and not only not only that. But like AJC coaching ear view self coaching just coaching

Because I don't know if people realize the long the. Oh. These gentlemen, had and how they had a relationship. It really is true. And it's real hard to trace, but you can trace their relationship back to the nineteen thirty seven election in Austin for new congressman. Special election was necessary because the congressman had died, and I called in and Johnson was elected with thirty eight percent of the vote. This was his first election that was critical, and he warned because Kark was secretary of state the secretary of state issues all the business licenses and certificates for everybody in the state of Texas back in those days, if you wanted to cooperation see the secretary of state well knew everybody, but he also being a stadium. Paulie was in close contact with all the state employees. So he could enlist them to vote for Johnson. And it was the margin of victory for Johnson. It was a bad. He can never repay. I mean, here's his first elected office. And it was a good one. And from then on Kark was his lawyer. We had the Senate election in nineteen forty one the Johnson loss because he didn't steal enough votes. Clark helped him he got in trouble. Because a lot of the money that he had us for the for the campaign was contributed by Brown and root employees, those employees who are given a salary with the understanding that they would contribute it to campaign violated IRS rules left and right Johnson get called into IRS for criminal charges. Well. Johnston's case to be taken to FDR himself. Drop the case. So here's another big city. Freed lawyers, and of course, the famous one is the forty eight election where? Johnson had learned how to steal votes. I want to answer in a car. Probably get enough. Thanks. Half of the cemetery. Everybody. I voted them alphabetically. It was enough for the vote to be taken to the state democratic committee. They vote by one vote for Johnson. It goes to the supreme court. Florida's convention supreme court Justice, you owe black drop the case it's dropped. And guess what? Johnson is president. He was. This gets a little complicated, which you wanted a little here. What happened next is Johnson becomes famous as lion. Lemon. Well, that's very scandalous and everybody in the state was getting ready to run against him. But turned out he had a sister. Who was? Flamboyant and she was in a sex circle. And it was necessary that that sex circle be terminated so Johnson arranges for a guy. He had got a job for with agriculture department to go shoot the cell.
