"Maybe work a few extra hours. That's kind of like you know what i've had to do with. This show is that i've had to work a few hours at my flying job because during the pandemic we had no income and so those are the things that you have to do. Sometimes in life you have to shift. You know what you're doing and why you're doing it and figure out why you're doing it and when you figure out the why it's real easy to to motivate yourself the why being i wanna get my instrument rating say and i want to get my commercial rating. So so start doing that. Set up your financial goals. Also make sure that you look at all the different avenues of financing all the different avenues out. There for instance scholarships. We have that here at aviation chris. Podcast dot com slash scholarships can get one for free aviation podcast dot com slash. Free and start researching. Doesn't matter what age you are. You should look towards scholarships and keep trying to apply I know a lot of them are for the younger folks. But there are some out there for folks that are your age also during this process of setting up financial goals. Set up your own personal goals. You listen to that person talk about. They were an engineer at the beginning of the show and he set up goals and said okay. This is what i'm gonna do. I'm gonna become an engineering stays in engineer. I'm not going to quit. And i'm gonna get my ratings and i'm gonna work on the weekends and at some point adequate and do this fulltime. Now he's flying as an airline pilot. That's what you need to start looking at visit. And when you do those goals don't just write them down. You have to constantly revisit those goals. It's like checklist i mean. People always ask me. How do i get so much done And it's really simple and this should be just a whole another video about how to how to be. Be very efficient. But it's real simple is put a checklist of things that you have to do. And just do each item on that checklist and just do one at a time. And don't go forward until you finish the first one if it come to a roadblock and you can't do anymore go to the next one but just keep working down that checklist and just move only to the next item when that item is done or you can't do it anymore. A lot of people look at a big check like twelve items and they try to do all twelve at once. Don't do that. Just start with one and go to the next. It's really that simple. And that's how i'm able to do so many different things another. I think a really important thing that you should do and this helps me stay motivated and it helps a lot of people go to events meet. "Interests and i think it's good to kind of diversify inspired out. It keeps me involved in in different aspects of aviation and aerospace and it keeps life interesting for me. You find yourself doing flight reviews during the pandemic to keep ends meet. Make ends meet No haven't gotten that far yet but maybe next pandemic. I'll be doing that. That's great sean. Anything you want to tell us about or anything you want people to know other than how to get a hold of you or or the products. Is there anything we should be talking about that. I didn't think of. I'm just want to say if you have any suggestions or anything else you want to be worked on. We take a lot of customer feedback and we're constantly improving the product. So the whole reason. I got involved with electron electrononics buildings tracks receivers as i want this to be accessible to everybody and i want stuff that is not going to expire when the battery dies and you have to buy new products every single piece of equipment that is on our aid. Espn receivers is sold on amazon. So you can fix the antenna you can replace the battery. Everything and i want this the last four years. So if you have suggestions for improvement or something else you wanna see made You can neither contribute to the open source. Offer project or give us suggestions for harbor improvements and we'll try and develop something for you. That's great you know Community is a theme that we cover often in the airplane. Geeks podcast and There are places to find or create communities throughout aviation and so this is just another example of of using a community and being part of community to improve the whole community. So i think that's really cool so if you're out there and you wanna be part of a gadgetry of maker community and you want to blend the maker community with the aviation community Getting involved in some of these open source aviation products. Sounds like a really great way to go. Yeah absolutely a lot of the innovation that we've had as ben from community contribution one of the developers right now is out of germany and he's actually taken straps imported that over to farm so that's kind of the protocol that they use over in europe and so the glider pilots generalization pilots over in europe are now using a strategy receiver that can receive farm information. So the community's been huge. It's what keeps project going and it's allowed us to have so many different use cases. That's great sean. So could you tell us how people can find you. I guess your website or other places that you're on the internet. yeah absolutely. You can find criag. Electron ix on. Www dr dog electronics dot com on facebook. Youtube instagram twitter. And if you want to get involved with a project strategy dot com and all the development happens on the slack channel and also very active on reddit slash our strikes so if you cannot figure all that out yourself just come to oshkosh next year. And fine sean. In one of the hangars absolutely we're in hangers see this year will probably be in hangers. See again next year. And if you're at the event this year will be giving a live demo tomorrow one pm at the forums. it'll be a strategy user group. Meet up at two thirty so all of us have been talking with each other on the internet can actually meet face to face and see there. Were real human beings. Well by the time anybody here is. I don't think that it will be an option but keep in mind for next time here at our venture to a look for sean in the forms and get involved with the community by being here in person again. Thanks so much. For being with sean and hope you continue to have a great. The show's going good for your so far. Absolutely we've had a lot of traffic and you know. I think it was a rough year for everyone last year. And it just so good to be out here and me personally i most. I only do sales online. So this is the one time every year. I get to meet customers. They tell me about how they're using the product and it kind of reinvigorates me and gives me a lot of energy. And i'm elated to be here. That's the perfect and thanks so much on and have continued to have a great show. Thanks for having me. It'll be interesting to see how that evolves since today Was monday today There was an announcement that raytheon bought Flight aware so Of course flight aware is the is the law. I believe they are the largest network of independent eighty espy receivers anywhere in the world. And so will that mean more business for people. That by sean stuff or or less or all the same. I don't know we'll see what happens because raytheon certainly a eight hundred pound gorilla and That is currently yet we seen. But we'll we'll see what happens over the next few months and friend of the show isaac alexander. Who's on twitter. As jet city star sent me that announcement earlier in the day as well and it's collins division of raytheon which purchasing flight aware flight where. I was surprised now has one hundred and thirty employees. But they've been around for at least ten years that i recall so they've built up a lot of business. I think most of us think of them as the free place where we can go out to track individual flights but of course they have a lot of paid services for companies Both airlines and fbi does Which are servicing aircraft landing at various small generally aviation airports and so they've got a lot of business that's just not You know readily apparent to those of us who use it as individual consumers. Just pull this up really quickly. I don't offhand. See anything about what collins aerospace paid for flight aware. That would be interesting while but it was a significant amount. I bet it was a i bet. Some people are easily going to retire now. I'm sure fascinating. So thanks so l. for for doing that i think that's the last interview that hill recorded at sunan fund. We do have some oshkosh. I mean yeah oshkosh. Sorry well you know why because oshkosh has been over for almost a month. I know but we know that. No i'm kidding. I'm not a material here. We have some more from brian and michael to coming up. So can look forward to that. One Email from listener that we wanted to mention from gabe. Gabe sent us a link to an article. Team pilot aims to be youngest woman ever to fly solo around the world. And this is our rutherford whose nineteen who left belgium on august eighteenth and she's Looking to cover thirty two thousand miles over fifty two countries five continents and She hopes to finish up her journey back in belgium on around november third so This is pretty cool. it's I guess a way to raise awareness About the lack of women in aviation and also stem In in that sort of thing and she's doing it in a shark that's right in a shark ultralight. Yeah one of our favorite airplanes. So that is very cool. There is a A.

"I don't know how to start this up so we got a whole bunch of things on this list that are like somewhat old because this happens every year after sunt well twice a year after sunan fund and after oshkosh because things have been building up on the list while we were off having fun or or not having fun or as the case may be. This one's were wild back but the jetpack guy reappeared jetpack guys back. Yeah and. I don't know what to make this. I looked at the story and a couple of weeks jeb. You put it on the list. What's is it. Does it more reputable than any of the others. Well this is the l. a. cbs station so. I'll let you make your own judgment on that but Aquatic accorded the story quotes of an faa official spokesperson. Quote a boeing. Seven forty seven pilot reported seeing an object that might have resembled a jetpack. Fifteen miles east of lax at a at five thousand feet altitude out of an abundance of caution air traffic air traffic controllers were alert alerted other pilots in the vicinity. I don't know maybe the problem. The seven forty seven pilots seven. Thirty seven five seven four. Oh i thought you said three okay. Seven four well. I don't know i don't see this. A seven forty seven joking. There's someplace i don't know what it is. Yeah so jetpack. But he i'm sorry. Did you say what altitude they estimated this jetpack beyond thousand. That's not okay still. It's kind of up there. I wouldn't wanna fall throughout high. No no neither would i dude. You wouldn't be able to thing. Yeah that's probably the sudden stop. that's well there is a show. I was watching last night in there. Is there's this chasm below this this walkway and one guy asked the other guys. How deep is this. He says how long will it take the hit bottom. He says he says the rest of your life. Okay a so the jetpack again. I don't know what to make of this. I don't know how can it possibly be that. This is a real thing whatever. It is possibly be that we haven't figured it out yet all right. This is the twenty first century. We got sensors and cameras everywhere. All right and and and i continue to. It's an area fifty one thing all right now own but if i okay i believe it could be a balloon except that if it were a balloon. They would've figured this out by now all right. I think it's an area fifty one thing where the government knows what it is and they're keeping it a secret from us. This is what i believe. Why would they be doing this on arrival corridor at lax. You know what have you been paying attention to our government these days. Why would they be doing anything. All right okay But you know what it's like It's an alien jet pack. That's it is it's alien jet pack. And they don't wanna. I don't know what i was going to say. They don't wanna make us. They don't want to start. They don't wanna panic us but we're past that too. Aren't we feel. I on jet packs as their mode of transportation. Yeah well that's not. Well i don't know that's the cover story anyways it's the truth is out there. Truth is out there. that's right. You're on this podcast. So all right so yeah. We're all be careful out there or at least when you're on that approached lax. Yeah you know. We should send one seventy drew out to reconnoiter and we gotta get into fly. That approach a couple. That wouldn't that wouldn't anger anybody. Well i was going to say okay. Maybe late at night analog doesn't matter yeah well i don't know so okay area fifty one. That's what i'm saying. The truth is out there. The truth is if it's area fifty one suckers got pretty good rain well over lax. I mean area fifty one symbolically sort of sort of so anyways. David your awful quiet on this. What's going on. I'm not sure what to think of this. The indus lack of decisiveness on some of the spotters. It's like you sure you saw that flying to florida once and the better half an hour getting down the panhandle and we saw the arrows stat. That's down there to watch for drug smugglers and other usurpers and got came on. We were on a knife. Our flight plan came on the frequency and said he does saudi shaw epo and the controller very formal and taken seriously ask for more information like what direction from you. What altitude. How far away. Oh never mind yeah. it's it's sierra steady. He was looking at it head on. And it's like this round thing with cable tax to it when the winds shifted a little bit and he got to look at it from the port. Todd realize what it was. He said it's either a ufo or the biggest unmanned blimp he'd ever seen. Yeah okay. maybe there's a. Maybe this is some sort of pilot thing you know and the like someplace. There's a pilot lounge with a list on the on the wall that says on on this particular day. It's your turn to report that you saw jetpack and and you know they're just kinda messing with us are. Maybe it's a hazing thing. I don't know there's a secret airline pilots society and and in order to you could have been the f. o. He could have been on iowa. And the captain made him do this. That's right that's right. It's your turn today. do it's really come on. There's enough aerospace industry in the l. a. basin that it's not a stretch to conceive that one of those companies. There is come up with something which innovative. But why they're justifying it in that airspace just brings me the baffles. Me brings me full circle to my area fifty one. the truth is out there. "As were recording recording this in early may but it shouldn't. It shouldn't be too long of a turnaround by the time we get everybody together. So we're looking for For a couple of different things. First of all How are things going. Forwards in of america what's What's news over there. What's going on in that organization. Well you know i. Everybody is kind of expecting and not be surprised by. It's kind of a coming out party. Time with the covid cases and deaths and things reducing the protocols Being lifted Here where i am in florida Lots of lots of activities going on so the warbirds community is starting to get back together and and have events to go to and probably the most important note on there and it probably jumps into a couple of other topics. We're gonna talk about later but Sunan fund had their spring break for for pilots and aviation enthusiasts Early april and. I'm happy to report that. They have had on every metric that they measure a forty seven year record breaking event. They had more campers than ever before. The campers stayed longer than ever before they had more aircraft than ever before the aircraft stayed longer than every before they had more people they had more gross revenue And slip back to warbirds commentary. a normal number of tending registered or birds for sun and fun for us is in the one fifties or we had one hundred and seventy-eight warbirds show up so there's pent up demand and we have every reason to expect that frosh cashier venture.

Checklist // Approach Plate Best Practices
"Leaders will come back to the finer points and good morning it is seven thirty. AM here in San Francisco on a rainy Sunday morning. I have a cup of coffee. You got my microphones. You're here with me and we are GonNa talk about spatial disorientation and a little bit about the recent video. I published on power on stalls But I wanted to start with spatial disorientation. 'cause I got this podcast question from Gary and Gary Says Jason. I've heard you mentioned it multiple times in both the podcast and on the Youtube Channel to hold your checklist or approach plate up to the instrument panel. But what if your checklist or approach plate is in four flight and it's on an ipad mounted to your yoke. I understand I could print out on my checklists but what about the approach plates etc.. I truly enjoy the information. Please keep up the good work. I'm awesome Gary. Thank you for that question and it is a great conversation because we're living in a time of transition right now. I know this sounds funny but you might have heard me compare the period. We're living in now to that of the Titanic Manic Right. I mean we've got this new technology But we don't really know where the proverbial icebergs are. We don't really you know it's brave new world. We're doing things we could never do before. So one of those things is integrating digital tools into the cockpit. And let's just start by talking about why I want people to hold hold the checklists and approach plates up It's really multiple reasons. You know when you're via far pilot and you're on the ground and you're in a busy airport environment or even cruising along trying to maintain a sight picture for example the hold altitude. It's wise to pick things up and keep your eyes into the field of view. Where you you need to be looking right so not at the instrument panel? If you're via far you hold your checklists up to the window so you can keep your eyes looking out the window while you read the list your is just Kinda Dart right back and forth on instruments there's an additional component here. There's the component of spatial disorientation. Now you've probably also heard me say that the FAA takes a spatial disorientation simulator. Around to shows like Oshkosh's I think Sunan Fund so if you ever have a chance to use that simulator. It's a profound experience right right. I mean it's a spinning box spinning central y axis as you stand there on the outside. You can see this thing spinning but once you get inside. You don't really know it spinning all that Motion Ocean is invisible to you. They're not a parent and you're in a flight simulator. You know you're inside this spinning box flight simulator. And you're doing things that are pretty much normal you turn to this heading turned to that heading climbed. Descend at some point. The voice in your ear tells you to drop your Pencil and point your head down ninety degrees that is look at your feet to pick up the pencil and when you do that motion with your head in the ninety degrees from looking forward to looking straight down. It's unbelievable it's like someone picked up your feet and three. Are you backwards spinning through the air. It is completely disorienting. And this is what we're trying to avoid an instrument flying anybody that's ever been in in the clouds and experienced spatial disorientation. Knows just how uncomfortable that can be. Uncomfortable is not the right word. I was GONNA say scary. It's really you know you're trying to control this airplane in the Cosby. You're feeling Dizzy Wright. And then you're you start to feel the stress of holy cow it if I can't control this thing. This is a life threatening exercise. I'm engaged in here right On so you don't want to go down that road. You WanNa avoid that as much as possible so when you're in the clouds we all just to review we have fluid in our inner ears. Here's rate we've got little semicircular. Canals that help us detect pitch forward or role laughter around a vertical Axis. And the more you move your head had the more likely you are to move the fluid in your inner ear and experienced spatial disorientation. So when you're in the clouds you should typically weekly try to limit your head movement and move your eyes In you know and as we've always done you pick up your checklists and hold them right up to the instrument panel or your applaud PLO approach plates right up to the instrument panel for two reasons. One is that first reason just like via fire you want. Your is moving quickly back and forth between the data. You're trying to took hold old and the information you're trying to read but now also this new component of avoiding spatial disorientation or eight. So that's the lesson that's the way we've always taught it and like you know Gary you're saying here what we're starting to see this. Little proverbial iceberg. Moving into our way is that everyone is now attaching these this giant ipads to their knee boards or to their yolk or maybe better up somewhere on the window but still blocking the window So how do we deal with this. You know and It's a real thing you know it's in. It's precisely due to the technology. It's not a major difference you know but it's much easier to pick up a small paper checklist West than it is to pick up a giant ipad attached to your lap. So people put their head down. I need agrees. They do exactly what we've always coached them not to do you know. So how do we deal with that. And that's your question. I recommend with four flight. That you've got to devices period for flight allows you to have to devices for your log in And you also need a backup device right so I don't believe everyone is backing themselves up fully with paper. Maybe some people are but not everybody so I recommend. Do you have one IPAD. That's fixed in position. Maybe on your yoke or even on your lap I suppose And that is you're low altitude en route chart that is is your chart supplement. That has all the extra stuff you get with four flight. That is your imagery. That's everything you need to access and then in your hand something you're able to the pickup is your phone or an IPAD mini. I use an IPAD mini. That's on a little clipboard. So I can literally just stick my finger between the IPAD the clipboard and Sorta hold my hand up. And it's kind of attached to my finger on it certainly light enough to to use for approach plates and checklists. So my advice to you gary is to dedicate your your devices to different purposes and run to like run for flight onto devices. And if you have it on your yoke or you have to put it on in your lap stay conscious of the intention here and just try to move. Your eyes. Don't move no don't make large head movements in certainly not looking down ninety degrees degrees. If you ever have a chance to ride the Giro I think is what the FAA calls it And that is their spatial orientation simulator. Definitely do it. It will change the the way you think about this stuff and help you take it seriously. Thanks for that awesome question here
