How Pleasant Hill Plans to Boost Economic Activity With Councilwoman Sue Noack

"Development is always a question I ask, what is Pleasant Hill doing to attract new business as to the city? Whether a it's new restaurant, a storefront location or an employment center, what are some of the things that Pleasant Hill is doing to attract those customers? So really what we're focused on right now is bringing back the businesses from COVID, right? And we lost some businesses in that and some were struggling, and so we want to bring that back. So there are two things that we're doing with some of our IRPA funds. And one of them is this Pleasant Hill perks card concept, right? So if you buy a Pleasant Hill perks card for 100 bucks, the city gives you 50 out of our IRPA funds. And so you can only spend it on those organizations or entities within Pleasant Hill. So that's trying to bring money into our businesses that survive COVID and that still exist. The other thing we did is we use some of the IRPA money to provide grants to businesses that may have not had as much of an online presence as was so helpful during COVID. So we have a grant program so business can apply for grants to get assistance dollar wise and also connections to other entities to provide them with that assistance to make their online presence better. So those are two things. The other thing that we focus on is making our city vibrant so people want to move into our city, right? And that's keeping the roads nice. We have free parking. We don't have meters anywhere in our city at all. And that's a big deal. A lot of people like to come to a city where they don't have to worry about paying for parking. And so we get a lot of people from outside Pleasant Hill coming into Pleasant Hill. So those are some of the things we're doing that are more soft items, making the city just more pleasant. Downtown is being redone. Some of the owners of downtown are redoing a plaza to make it more friendly for people to come and take food and sit outside and relax and chat with people. So there's work being done there as well. So I think there's a lot of good work being done. We're never going to be a super big retail site. We're just not big enough. We have some on the edges, right? So the Coles Crossing area is a good shopping area and then up by Target and Safeway. Those are Pleasant Hill. The Sun Valley Mall is not, but further west of that is Pleasant Hill again. So those areas we want to make sure traffic can flow. That's tricky up there. We're 680 and Contra Costa Boulevard are, but trying to make those entities vibrant as well as making sure people can access them easily and get there. So those are our bigger retail areas. So, and we have an economic development person who spends a lot of time talking to businesses that might have an interest in coming into Pleasant Hill. And I think as everybody is facing, there's a change in how people buy things these days, right? Whether they go online or whether they go to the store. And so we have to look at those changes and see what services still require bricks and mortar. And that's what we need to attract.

"Something about roe, which he's set to discuss here in a moment. That's highly unlikely. Look, there's a chance that everything I just mentioned doesn't happen. And we cruising in November with nothing coming out of this Congress. Well, and there isn't really a chance that the Democrats are going to do well in the midterms is there. I mean, this is going to be very difficult for the Democratic Party. Absolutely it is. I mean, look, you've got a president with approval ratings in the upper 30s. You've got inflation at what are we calling it a 40 year high now. We've got a war cooking overseas. And just remarkable division in this country. By the way, the January 6th committee is set to drop supposedly some pretty big bombshells next week. That could further exacerbate the division or the sense of unrest in this country. This is a remarkable time that we're living in. And so maybe even fast forward a little bit to 2024, I was going to ask the same thing. What do you think that Democrats would like to do in 2024 in terms of the president? Who have they got? Well, look, the Joe Biden does not love the columns about how he should step aside and not run in 24 and Democrats are worried about this, but we keep hearing a lot about Gavin Newsom, governor pritzker from Illinois. Look, nobody knows that so far out and it's unclear if Donald Trump is going to be running as well. That decision is what's going to probably prompt everyone else to make up their minds here because you've got Republicans and Democrats in waiting and incumbent in a former president. What an unusual scenario here who could be doing battle again and not a lot of people want to step in front of them are way too old to be a law. Well, there is a law for a minimum age. You think there should be a maximum? I mean, it is my personal opinion and unrelated to, and by the way, no one cares about my opinion. I wonder what Democrats think about Joe Manchin. Is he despised or do they say, wow, thanks to him, we really dodged a bigger inflation bullet. I think it depends which Democrat you're asking, right? If this is a center or a progressive Democrat, by the way, did you see he's out at sun valley? I did not see that. Joe Manchin, you better believe it. You know, he left the houseboat here in Washington and went out to sun valley to, I guess, Hopkins makes some deals. I'd love to know what he's talking about with people and what parties he's attending, but yeah, he's basically the most powerful senator in Washington right now. And this is why The White House can not live without him. They were apart for months. They weren't talking. Everybody was upset at the beginning of the year. But he sees an opportunity here as well. And he can go home to West Virginia, potentially and say, hey look, I got you guys a lower deficit. I got you guys lower drug prices, both are big in West Virginia and we're doing it at the expense of the wealthiest people in the country. And when was the last time you paid this much for coal? Or cared this much about coal? Or need to pull this much? Indeed. All right. Joe, thanks so much for joining us. Sure. It's Friday, but I'm still tuning in at 5 p.m.. Absolutely. What's going on? As I do every, yeah, every day. Sound on with Joe Matthew at 5 p.m. on Bloomberg radio. All right, so we are still waiting for the president to come out, obviously he's going to be very late. Yeah, I mean, he's the president he can be. Did we have a president in your lifetime who's been on time? Oh, God, I can't remember. I can't imagine, but Greg Jarrett will have the answer to that. We should ask Greg, but I just remember that Obama was very late as well. And I don't know if that's because a lot of Republicans were angry about punctuality. But there must have been a president who considered who respected your time, right? Exactly. Who wanted to hit the mark? Apparently not this one. There was a great story on the Bloomberg yesterday that President Biden, he just wants to download so much information. Right. He wants to have meetings after meetings after meetings and just get so much data before he makes decisions that he's constantly busy. I mean, I'm sure every president's constantly busy, but he's just, yeah, totally filling up his schedule. That's probably a little bit different than from his predecessor who wasn't necessarily so big on the detail. A policy. Yeah, I mean, I spent the entire Trump presidency in Germany. So it wasn't really my focus. But Germans, they show up on time. Sure. Even if their Chancellor, you know? All right, let's look at these markets here, Matt. You know, I'm going to call it a quiet trading day here quite a Friday in the summer. We have the S&P up about one tenth of 1%. The Dow up about one tenth of 1% as well. And NASDAQ a little bit better up about a quarter of 1%, 11.650 on your NASDAQ. But again, the jobs numbers, I'm taking them as pretty good. The jobs numbers were good, which is bad news for markets, right? Because now that the fed can continue to hike and really the top story I'm going to say of the day and the most shocking and really tragic story is the assassination of Shinzo Abe. We've got Kathleen Hayes in here. I saw her walk in and I said, grab Catherine Hayes. Because if there's someone who knows anything in this building about Japanese politics and about the bank of Japan, it is Kathleen. Thanks so much for coming in for just a couple of minutes. I wonder if you think anything changes now, especially since the bank of Japan is in a pretty unique position already with a 25 basis point cap. They own more than half. Of all of the JGBs, do they move? Not yet. I have to be very surprised that they did. First of all, the well, actually, the meeting that's coming up in late July is one where the issue of monetary policy report and change their forecast. So they could. But so far, governor cro duet number one has stuck to the idea that look, we've got a lot of downside risk in this economy. We've had negative growth recently and he thinks they still need stimulus and the kind of inflation rise they're getting is the bad kind. It hurts consumers. You have to pay more for gas and food. So that's been his position. And remember, mister Abe, a former prime minister Abe, was still the head of the LDP. He was still the man in power in many ways, although kushida kishida had replaced him in the last couple of years. And so far, the ministry of finance, there hasn't been no big message from the kishida's team, which would suggest that Abe was still behind this, that the BOJ has to move now. There has been some comments like one of the government officials saying that being in Japan, we know that they will take appropriate responses to the weakness in the yen, for example, that's another thing that's really bothering a lot of people. But until we get to one 42 or one 45 is what we've been hearing today from Ben emmons, for example.

"Let's get back out to sun valley, the conference there in Idaho, where many of the world's top business leaders are indeed gathered to talk deals. It's talking about them about deals. We've got a special guest there. Yeah, I do, and the conversation in and around some valley is a big picture one about inflation about recession about private markets, public markets, startups, venture capitalists. So I'm delighted to be joined by Kevin Hart. Of course, eventbrite, cofounder and chairman, now in the world of venture capital general partner and cofounder of a star capital. So given that spiel I just gave. Explain where we are in the world right now. But you know what one would say about an entrepreneur and an investor is that I'm not a macro person, but unfortunately I'm old enough to have been through a few cycles of ups and downs in I think we're really just in the beginning act of this process, I think with the fed stimulus and the action taken in March of 2020, we kind of delayed and pushed out and then now amplified what's happening now and that's a very dire outlook on the economy over the coming years. So let's pivot to your other role. Your other live chairman of event bra. And there seems to be these two competing currents, right? And sun valley kind of captures that. We've come out of a pandemic and now we're concerned about a recession. But people finally for the first time in a long time are getting back together through your eventbrite lens. How do you see the world? Well, we had in Julia the CEO did a brilliant job of navigating us event right through the downturn. We had sold almost 5 billion in tickets in 2019 in March of 2020. We had negative ticket volume, meaning there were more refunds in Julia really moved insanely quickly to shore up the business and raise funding in the public markets. So we feel we've kind of been through what's happened over the last 6 months back in March of 2020. And we're now seeing the kind of return of the live experience people are just so hungry to get out. But they're not spending, you know, we've got this inflationary cycle. They're not spending what they used to for like the large concerts that they'd maybe travel to or so on. They're going local. And that is really what eventbrite primarily covers is the local events in one's community. And they tend to be at a lower price point. And so we're really seeing a great surge based on that. Brian tuskegee Airbnb has pointed out similar phenomenon and that is that people are going local. Now that was during COVID, but that habit has stayed, especially in these inflationary times, so staying local is really what it's about and we think our business as well positioned for it. It's interesting you bring up Airbnb, Brian chesky, we've seen recessions and financial crises before 2002 1008 and startups, big names came out of that and went on to become giant companies. You know, how do you see that? Are there opportunities here for the next Google the next Airbnb to emerge? I don't want to sound morose, but I get a little bit. I get a little bit giddy during these downturns because it really separates out the kind of tourist those that could come to the valley or go before investors and raise $5 million off a plan. This is really when great businesses are formed when people thinking against the grain are starting companies and will really endure in a capital efficient manner and we'll see well absolutely see some great businesses. So putting on my a star capital hat. I'm just excited. I'm seeing a pickup of investments coming coming in and we are very excited to find that next Airbnb. I had the good fortune of being a seed investor in Airbnb back in 2009. It got to know Brian Nate and Joe and they were scrappy and they were hungry and it was a recession and they had what it took to survive. They had what it took. Talking about survival. I hear a lot of competing things over the last few days, some say keep your powder dry, do not deploy capital. Because of volatility in public markets, there's spooked. Others say, no, I'm going to go out there. I see opportunity. Are there any industries or is any sort of thematic direction that you're taking with your investment thesis? That's a very important question. I've traditionally been really founder focused, so like a Ryan Nate and Joe at Airbnb, for example, or an extraordinary team was the investor in Pinterest spent silverman who actually after a dozen years is just stepped down as CEO, but

"All right, coming up, we're going to check in with masa Takeda portfolio manager Hennessey, Japan fund, get the latest on what is going on with our friends in Japan, the Japanese yen continues to weaken and then Ed ludlow, West Coast correspondent for Bloomberg news. He's not on the West Coast he's in sun valley, Idaho. That's all the media moguls are, and he's hobnobbing. So we're going to get the latest from what's going on in sun valley. But right now, let's go to great Jared, get a Bloomberg business flash. Great. Yeah, I'm jealous of Ed, I love that part of the country. Stocks are up. Extending a positive trading stretch as markets weigh recent drops in commodity prices against recession risk. The prices of oil copper and other key commodities have tumbled from recent peaks. A drop tied to the weakening growth outlook. But oil is heading back up again. Right now, the S&P 500 is up 1% up 38, the Dow's up, 7 tenths of a percent up 210, and the NASDAQ up one and a half percent of a 171 to ten years down 9 30 seconds. The yield is 2.96%, but Texas intermediate crude as I intimated earlier is up 5.1% of a hundred is that a $103 60 cents a barrel comic goes up four tenths of a percent at 1743 20 and ouch. The dollar yen one 35 73, the Euro dollar O one 77 of the British pound, a dollar 1994 Bank of America says customers spending continues to show signs of resilience despite surging inflation banks at spending on credit card and debt debit cards was up 11% from a year earlier in June compared with a 13% increase in April and 9% in May. That's a Bloomberg business flash Bloomberg markets continues now Paul Sweeney and Matt Miller. Greg Jarrett, thanks very much. Now I'm going to bring in masa Takeda. He's a portfolio manager for the Hennessey, Japan fund. And this has been to my mind one of the most interesting stories that doesn't get the coverage it deserves. Let's give it some coverage. The bank of Japan is insistent that it's going to hold rates to a quarter percent or lower and the market, mister market is testing them out. Now, traditionally, this trade is called the widow maker. You short JGBs, you short the yen and so many investors have gotten burned that's earned that moniker. Masa Takeda, are you one of those investors that's trying this again? No, I'm just a terrible amount of stuff they care to make money by taking groups of companies. Well, what do you think about the bank of Japan's will to hold out against the market? I mean, can they keep it pegged at a quarter percent or will they have to let it slide like the Swiss national bank did a couple of years ago? Well, it's hard to tell, but it seems like a bank of Japan is still very much committed to the zero rate policy and the control. Now they're in a dilemma, obviously if they choose to raise rates then, of course, it's going to hurt the economy. We're just coming out of the pandemic. So it's still their fragile. If they don't choose to raise rates, but then the yand will continue to depreciate on widening interest rate differential and that's going to also drive inflation further. So and that includes isn't going to be good for the economy either. So I think in a very tricky situation right now, so that's my take on this. Just pointing out Paul, right now we're at a 135, 72, which is we're having around the 1998 low. The last time we saw this was long term capital management. Exactly. I'm looking at the one year chart for the Japanese yen. We started the year or a year ago, 12 months ago at about one ten. Now we're at one 35, so just significant weakening. Masa, I love to get just your overview based upon your experience at the folks you talk to in Japan. How has the pandemic impacted Japan just broadly defined and how has it impacted the economy and how are folks they're dealing? Honestly, economy was severely damaged. And also, that's been not as resilient as we hope to as we hoped. And still enhance the economy has been a very fragile state. So as a culture manager, I mean, I'm in Japan, including manager, but my investment style is to invest in great companies that have global footprints. So try not to put all our eggs in one basket. One geography. And there are a lot of great companies out there in Japan that have strong presence worldwide. And if there's going to be a strong uptick in Japan, before the company should also benefit from it. So that's my sort of defensive investment strategy at the moment. So talk to us about maybe some names that might fit that kind of framework that you and your team are doing some work on right now. Yeah. So our investment manager is to invest in great business with exceptional management attractive clients. So we are a growth growth management. We're in the gross management bucket. And obviously, market rotation from growth to value has been has taken a toll on us. But we continue to remain invested in our long-term holdings and growth moves. But at the same time, we've been actively searching for what I would call growth names in disguise. And what I mean by that is companies whose growth prospects are just as strong as any pure growth name we're talking about earnings growth in a case of campus and plus, a bit of trading at a value stock out multiples due to misperceptions in the market. And I would highlight the touch as an example. And then there's another example, another type of growth in disguise where the growth earnings growth rate might be in the midst of single digits, but they come with significant ability to buy back shares and fund even if you add them all up, you could take some return of the shareholder. And I would highlight general insurance companies as primary examples. I just want to quickly ask you about the election House of councillors election on Sunday. What are the market implications of that, what could they be? Well, it seems like the ruling party is going to win the majority ships. And I think right now, prime minister tisha, in Haitian promoting so called Japan's new capitalism. And the market was once by the prospects of an issue potentially introducing not to shareholder not to spend policy measures like higher capital gains tax rates and minimum wage hikes. So depending on what policy measures will come out going forward, it may have some repercussions in the market. But I would look at it more positively where this is really marks a shift from shareholder friendly capitalism to sustainable growth capitalism. So we should take it as a positive movement. All right. Thank you so much for joining us there. Mase Takeda portfolio manager for the Hennessey Japan fun getting an update on the developments out of Japan and again election is not just a pointed out coming up. This weekend, so it's good to get an update there. Still some pretty strong performance in these markets, that kind of holding these gains got the S&P up just about 1% this morning. Yeah, it's pretty interesting, especially after the fed minutes yesterday indicated as we were talking with Jonathan about that the fed is going to fight inflation over worrying about a recession. The market doesn't seem to buy it right now. The dollar coming off a little bit, so you do see a little bit of a well, I was going to say recovery in the Euro. But in fact, it's down now against the dollar at one O one 71. But the pound is at one 19 9 gaining after Boris Johnson's resignation. All right, let's head down to Washington, D.C. world

"And they're out there. And you got to our next guest. Look at what I'm going to Brian. Why is she right now? Do I have to talk about that? Brian, good morning to you and thank you for joining us. We're a little punchy or it's been a hugely political day for us. When we look at the markets right now, they're going to come off a jobs report. It is a jobs report. It's not a historic, but it has a certain weight to it. How do you trade off this job's report? How do you reallocate off this jobs report? I think the market is still coming to terms with the fed and the slowdown and the idea that we're just going to easily hike and then ease. The bond market has a lot of adjusting to do. So I think this report will give us a slight window into what's coming. But it's not going to settle anything. I think the markets are going to be just as unsettled after the number tomorrow as they are today. Just reading another downgrade, Tom, from the S&P John stealth of Oppenheimer, did you see that one comment? I think many of us were waiting for it. 4800 is his new price target. The previous read from him, the previous target, 53 30, of course, as we know. We had Jonathan governor Credit Suisse come down from 4900 to 43. So still pretty bullish John stoff is looking for 4800 year end. Bran, I've been catching up with people in the bond market and as you know, one of the questions we've been asking is whether we've seen the higher the ten year yet for this year. And I think a lot of people in this equity market would take comfort from that. If you think we have, do you think we have? I'm not sure we have. I think we may have come close. I think we have to revisit it. I think we got that nice balance off of that three 50 ish level and stocks felt better about. Again, the ease that's coming. I read the fed minutes yesterday and look at the data and I don't think it's going to be that easy. I think inflation is not going to slow down as quickly as they wanted to. Growth is certainly slowing, but I don't think it's a disaster. So category recession maybe, but is that they going to stop? No, and I'm not sure we've seen the highs yet. Ryan is a partition seriously at sun valley between companies minting money down the income statement. And a lot of others, maybe with some good revenue pop, but that's about it. In the recovery out one year, two years, when Mike Wilson tells us that it's finally stocks up, will there be will there be a partition between free cash flow and those that don't have it? I think so. I mean, the way we look at it in the bond market is a little bit different, but certainly I think that the idea, the idea that we're going to get free money again, the idea that you can buy any bond, it's not going to default. I think that's going away. Which is why I think you're seeing Trump on struggle, which is why you're seeing loans struggle a bit. There's great value out there, but there's also great danger, right? So the idea that you can just buy any bond and that you're going to be okay to answer your question directly. I think it cash flow is going to matter in a matter a lot. Well, I wanted to bring this up Brian because it's so important to bond market is a surprise going to be the issuance of more debt by the haves by the companies with huge free cash flow. I think they'll continue to issue. I'm not sure it would be a big, big surprise. I think people are going to be surprised at how much the curve inverts and that means that's okay. I mean, it's not great, as you say, it means recession. But as far as being an issuer, you can issue out the yield curve, right? These are still historically low rates. Companies are still growing faster than the rates are going to issue at. So I expect that we'll continue to see issuance out the yield curve from those companies for sure

"China accusing the U.S. of technological terrorism in its push to stop ASML and Nikon from selling key chip making technology to the country. Now joining us now is the man who helped break that scoop, Eric Martin, and it really is interesting about how the U.S. is leaning on SML cause the Dutch equipment maker and Japanese make an econ as well, China responding pretty aggressively to it. That's right, Caroline, but we've seen is China rejecting the pressure that the U.S. is putting on ASML as well as on Nikon of Japan. But ASML having by far the biggest market share of this technology do deep ultraviolet lithography that etching equipment for chips. I can not tell you how much I had to look into that sort of technology when I used to report an ASML's numbers and some of the other European equipment makers. What do you think China could do in response? What about their own innovation within the country to be able to develop such equipment? Well, we've certainly seen efforts by the Chinese to develop their own equipment. To date, they haven't had a whole lot of success with it. ASML remains the by and large, the sole provider of DU V two China. And these are not the most advanced etching etching equipment. The second generation is slightly older generation that we're talking about, but still the most commonly used in this industry. And so this is something that the Chinese definitely have a desire to steal a march on the advanced countries, the rich countries that are selling and making this equipment, but that they have thus far not been very successful in that effort. So when the U.S. realizes this is the way it can really apply pressure from a technological standpoint. Do you think it will bear fruit? I know ask this previously, but have we heard any further from Nikon from ASML as to whether they are willing to respond? Well, what we understand is that ASML so far has not gone along with and has objected to the U.S. push on the Netherlands for ASML to be cut off from these kinds of sales. They're feeling is that this is not something that the U.S. should be should be doing. But we've seen broad U.S. push on China and Don Smith and some of these chip producers in China and it's something that the bureau of industry and security is on a daily basis looking at in terms of trying to stop China from matching or overtaking the U.S. in this kind of technology on the national security concern. Next thing you're looking for, Eric. Well, whether ASML eventually does go along with this or whether more aptly if the government of the Netherlands goes along with this with blocking the sale of this kind of technology because this is a real choke point for China's chip industry and something that could really hamstring China going forward. Eric Martin, with all the scoops, we thank you. We look forward to how that story continues to progress. Meanwhile, that does it for this edition of new big technology. "I could probably start telling more fish stories, but one more was three weeks before the turbine was to be delivered. GE did not like our lightning arresting capacity. And they wanted to make sure that the turbine wasn't going to get fried because it had to be grounded. And so we had to drill 300 feet away from the turbine in both directions. A 200 foot well. And we had to take copper wire and put it in what's called rounding soil, which is black gunpowder type soil, not gunpowder, but it looks like that. Consistency. And you had to make sure that when it got to the hole in the ground, it had an arc. It couldn't have a right angle to it, because the lightning needs to come down and get right down to the ground within a millisecond. And we had to find the solution to that, you know, within days. And nakamura would find a band Missouri who dealt with lightning, arresting nationally, and he helped us get through the process. So the turbine had lots of hit gun center. Yeah, well, and it was like the first time it had been done at a ski resort, which it shouldn't be that much different, but like you're putting it on top of a mountain versus probably near a waterway. Like somewhere flat and then but that was the standard. You guys set the gold standard for what we come to know as like clean energy at ski resorts. I don't know. I mean, you might know the number, but it's a common thing now. It's what ski resorts are trying to achieve is to be efficient. Use the energy you use and have everyone else buy the rest back. And what has happened because we end up developing a solar project Tyler did that was too rich for our blood to develop, but we sold it to a developer, and we take half the power from that solar system. The combination of the turbine and the solar system means we now produce more power, things we created than we use. So we can truthfully say, you know, we're a 100% able to put out more than we use. And then they buy it back, right? Like not to get into like finances, but that also helps the resort with influx of cash. Bad snow year, bad anything that can only help amenities, chairlifts, the customer experience. That's correct. Yeah, go ahead. The turbine was a milestone in my career. And it's one of the reasons I think I got selected to the Hall of Fame was because that was a spearhead move along with the short skis and in 2017 NSA recognized me with a lifetime achievement award and that probably further facilitated my getting elected into the Hall of Fame because there were three major things that happened by my involvement in NSA. Besides being active on the board, did you ever think as a 23 year old that you were going to have all these achievements in your life or you just like, because I've talked to you for 20 minutes now and you don't seem like a banker, you don't seem like an owner or a president. You seem like a skier who just happened to fall into some things and make the ski industry better. So I'd like to think that you're a ski bum at heart. I'm a ski bone at heart and you're absolutely right. I never, ever even had the thought process that I'd be elected in this Hall of Fame as recent as 5 or ten years back. It wasn't, you know, like that's something I wouldn't say I was aware of it, but I didn't believe that I would be credible enough to be elected. And it happened. But I did. So yeah, I mean, it doesn't really get any better than that. I mean, you're in the Hall of Fame. And there's been some, you know, the Hall of Fame is coming back east this year, which is like a big talk and a big to do. How important do you think it is for the Hall of Fame to be back on the east coast? Well, I think it's really important because of an interview like this is taking place because of that. So the awareness of the Hall of Fame becomes important to the Hall of Fame because we don't have we have like 500 members from the Hall of Fame and we need 1500 members. So anybody that comes to the induction ceremony is going to be exposed to the Hall of Fame in a way. They've never been exposed to it. We got forced to come back east and do two inductions. One's being done at sun valley later in March. And the one Woods because of COVID, we couldn't have a Hall of Fame induction two years ago. We couldn't have one last year. And so next year there'll be one at killington and there'll be one at Aspen. So we are, I'm sorry, no, it's going down. It's a big sky. Okay. And so we have. Pretty sure I'm right about that. And so the ability to take advantage of the opportunity to say, let's spread our wings and where we're doing it, the problem created that opportunity. So we had to necessarily find a way to recognize having a banquet with 18 people speaking. It isn't any fun for anybody. No. Having a banquet for 6 people to talk and I've got my speech down to like four minutes. And kind of sharing what I'm sharing with you. And so that became much more palatable in terms of what we're doing. I would say probably when we get through the COVID scenario, we will probably do one in the east and one in the west most years. And we'll take turns will go to the east coast one year and we'll go back to the West Coast and other Europe, the proximity that there may be one that happens in Michigan..

"So it's really, really complex. We've you know, we turned Back on Afghanistan before when the Russians left because we saw it as just a proxy war. And at that point, and so you had, you know the nineties where you had Al Qaeda taking root. Taliban regime, right coming into being and we all know where that ended up 9 11. Right? So you know, I mean, uh, I fear the future. For the Afghanistan people, certainly, but also for America because there are people out there in the world. It's easy to forget because we haven't had a terrorist attack on the homeland for 20 years, but there are people out there. We wanted to do evil to us. And those people are going to be in Afghanistan, you know, feeling victorious, and then once again going to have governed space? No, no CIA station there. "Welcome back to fast money. Check out the media. Stocks closing mostly in the red along with the broader markets. How should you be trading some of these big names. Let's bring an engine media's executive chairman town rogers he's also a former nbc cable president and a cnbc contributor. Fast money friend. And now we should note the executive chairman of a publicly traded company. Engine media just listed today. So congratulations on that tom before we get to that. I do want to ask you about the media. Space sun valley is going on right. Now will any deals come out of it you think. Well there's usually conversation that if there is an immediate deal announcement there's something that lingers and ultimately turns into a deal announcement so maybe months down the road but they'll be conversations that lead to some deal. You wanna give us a prediction of what what conversations will well. Traditional media has a lot of challenges that traditional media has got to find a new path and when companies find that they need a new path. Usually they find their way to some deal. So something involving traditional media going someplace as my broadest prediction. Okay carrying you. Got a question for tom. I do. i'm going to take your broadest prediction and just overlap that with something. I have in my portfolio which is viacom and so you know you sell the crazy ride that the stock had maybe having nothing to do with valuation whatsoever. But they did do an offering. They did raise money. But do you them as i mean. We'll still be a public company will give you a lot of time in five years. Well my guess is that they will have to find a path to value beyond being independent. But i wouldn't think that would necessarily happen near term They have some very challenge. Cable assets Some of the more challenge cable assets particularly in the kids area and they have a sub scale streaming effort. that's gaining a little momentum but clearly on its own. It's going to be very difficult. I think to break into the to the top four or five streaming services that people have in their homes so I would keep my eye on that one as something in the intermediate term that transaction someway. Hey thomas. Dan congrats on the listing. Here at the nasdaq media. Listen combine some really hot trends in digital trends together with each sports in gaming and you have the programmatic advertising. You're doing it with a influence on here. Tell us about why all those pieces worked so well together and the opportunities specifically i guess in these sports to thanks dan well. We talked on the show about media trends. We've talked on the show about gaming trends. What engine media real uses a combination of gaming and media assets where the to really reinforce each other and each has a differentiated way for people. To play the the gaming sector and how the media world reinforces the gaming sector so we have a company that provides viewing experiences for people who are watching sports on tv and game. Gema is it. The same for the hundreds of millions of global viewers of e sports and game is that we have platform that allow east sports competitors to play against each other major tournaments that we hold for the likes of ten cents riot and microsoft and we broadcast those tournaments out to the fans of the sports world. Which again are hundreds of millions. A lot of people thought that the east sport viewing trend was a pandemic thing that would fizzle where actually seeing that viewership across the major east sports platforms twitter facebook gaming youtube gaming or actually up eighty percent year over year as we're coming out of the pandemic so as you said dan. We also combine that with How to reach influencers in a gaming environment how to sell programmatic advertising and gaming environment very importantly the data and analytics for gaming that are so important for media companies to navigate. How they reach the younger demographics. That are there. So it's really a collection of businesses. Where gaming meets media how the to reinforce each other with again a very differentiated way of playing the gaming sector takers game up. Eighty percent year on year. That's just staggering. Tom thanks for joining us. Always good to see you. Well we got game and we have the symbol game so allow me to talk game with you guys. Thanks very much. On rogers guy dummy. You know, it's heard you talking about it earlier and you've had a year off from Sun Valley, and that's got to be tough on these media moguls because they love getting together and talking deals. So I suspect that we're going to see a lot of things come out of Sun Valley because you look at the it's really the haves the super mega companies, whether it's an Amazon or Facebook, or, you know Amazon apple, and then you've got so many smaller capitals even like, um, CBS. Do not stay in your condo because that's where you're going to run into some of the you go moguls and you standing at the bar or getting a steak at one of the saloons out there, and there's not that many places to go. "Twit It's open to everyone worldwide. And it's been a lot of fun. It's been really great. Mary jo foley is in there by the way. She's in the discord responding to people. Thank you. We didn't do our discord. Qna today. but. I think we're running long enough after we debated the fate of windows. Eleven points. no no no no. It's time for mary. Jo take a few seconds. Oh days of the week. It's been a while since you've had a good all out. War between microsoft and other cloud vendors aired out publicly like showing their dirty laundry in public. But we're having one right now. It's involving sap who is one of microsoft's biggest and titus partners and everybody else so i think it was two weeks ago. I saw an article somewhere that said Microsoft an sap kind of does personally dissolving their packed and they. They're connected in many different ways with marketing packs and sales paxson. Sap says microsoft preferred cloud for a lot of different reasons and a lot of different workloads but This article said that that sap quietly starting to sell google cloud to customers and not azure. So i was like. I wonder and then microsoft of course deny and saying the person from sap you said this didn't know what they were talking about And then another article came out. Saying sap is now going with customer choice and not telling them they should use azure as as their preferred cloud Instead they should just like customers you know. Pick what they want and they'll just build on top of any cloud any of the big public clouds. So again i was like i don't know. Is this really happening or is this. Just wishful thinking. Well today microsoft kind of confirmed it makes up. Put out a blog post entitled. Why customers including sap choose asher for their sap solutions. And it's a whole as this is awesome microsoft defending. Hey sap loves us. They love so much their own. It department uses asher Here's a list of all our giant customers. That use azure There's a pie chart. Sap customers bradley favor. Microsoft azure with asher being forty seven percent of the pie and google cloud twenty one and eight s only eighteen But yeah it's it's funny to see this all kind of coming to a head now because a lot of people are asking me like what is going on with microsoft sap. I don't know how many of you are old enough to remember this. But microsoft actually tried to buy sap back around two thousand four or so and so ever since then they've swapped executives and Done a lot of joint partnerships joint sales joint this joint that and so it feels like ever since julia white over there. Like there's been a little unraveling and i'm not blaming julia white kind of an interesting. Why my hating on julia white not. I'm not actually of i. Like i love julia. Wait i was sad when she went to sap But yeah it's it's a little interesting to see this because you know all of the cloud vendors. They loved to claim you know so and so says were their preferred cloud which is kind of meaningless thing. Anyway it just means yeah as we're not their exclusive cloud. We're just one of the clouds that they might happen. Recommend a little more than the other clouds But yeah i. I love these battles. They're always fun. And and it's fun to watch the back and forth and tit for tat and we'll see we'll see who fires the next salvo. Maybe google put something like why. Sap loves the google cloud most companies that are multi homed right. Everybody's multi cloud narrates. It was funny. Wouldn't want anybody claims. Like oh everybody's all in on blah only use us exactly yes What is sap's business They are big aarp e. crm price up giant enterprise salesforce their salesforce competitor but even oracle. Yeah then salesforce and finally not finally second to finally ultimately the codename week. Yes okay so. I did a couple of weeks ago. Cherry hill as the coding piccola. Week which i said. At the time i thought it was something around like the user experience for sun valley And now today we have another one to add to this weird. Mix of mishmash of codenames right. So zach boden overt window. Central said in response to the walking cat on twitter. Who was asking about some codenames. He said well. There's also this codename called fire. Steel and wire steel is supposed to be the microsoft tool for building. Cherry hill experienced ges for sun valley very convoluted very and then. Brad sam's our friend in the bunny suit chimed in and said yeah in fact there's gonna be a cherry hill store and a cherry hill this and a cherry hill. That and i'm like oh so. Cherry hill is definitely like the u x piece of sun valley. And then i. I don't know who said this next. They said yeah and everything is red. I guess because of cherry hill. But i'm like what does that mean. Red design or what. I don't know there are all these crazy codenames floating around and you know because it's panels. There's probably multiple codenames for different things to try to catch the leakers Beyond the newest one. I hadn't heard till today was fire. Steel which is the tool used internally. I don't think i would leak that name if i were you. Sounds like you're getting a little close to the source this is what's wrong is that we're maximum. I don't know. I know it's in my head but i don't remember who sang chat room. Please a little help here little health. Who saying we are the fire. Is it bonnie tyler. Is it No is it I think it's called fire and steel. I think it's chris rea-. I don't know i know this bad. The Tulsa race massacre was one of the worst incidents of racial violence in American history. Today we revisit a story from Radio Diaries, the story of a witness to that day. She was six years old at the time of the massacre. My name is Olivia J. Okay? The black part of Tal for it was a neighborhood where you could be treated with respect. My father had a very nice store. Samuel be hooker and son. It was a story that didn't carry shadowy things. They had a row shirts, coping hammer suits Florsheim shoes. And that's in the hat..

"That is unique to America. We believe that privacy is a fundamental human, right? And that Z basically like saying, like, you know, Unlike Facebook, we actually care about your privacy and that that seems more explicit. Right? Right. And I mean, at that point, Mark Zuckerberg respond. You know, the reality here is that If you want to build a service that helps connect everyone in the world. Then there are a lot of people who can't afford to pay. He goes on the Ezra Kline show and basically throws it back and cooks face and says, I mean, look, if you want to build a service, which is not just serving rich people, then you need to have something that people can afford. The whole point of advertising is that we're making our service free and you don't have to pay 1200 bucks or whatever exorbitant price to use our product. Unlike some other companies, and Cupertino, California I think it's important. We don't all get Stockholm syndrome and let the companies that work hard to charge. You more convinced you that they actually care more about you because that's that sounds ridiculous to may. So they trade some more shots in the press. And then in 2019, both sides think they need to have a talk. They need to, like, sort of come to terms and come to a peace between each other, you know, And every year, there's this retreat called Sun Valley that basically all the billionaires go to kind of commune with one mother. And so Tim Cook and Mark's Achterberg and they're sort of respective teams decide. This is where we're gonna hash it out. So they sort of get together in this room with a small group of executives from both companies. And Mark basically says the Tim, You know, what would you do in this? Situation, you know, like the whole world's coming down on us. You know, what would you do? And Tim's response is essentially, you know, I think you should believe every bit of information about people that you've collected outside of your main Facebook. APS. You know, one person said that Mark seems stunned. I mean, the CEO of Apple, telling you that your whole business model is broken and wrong. Probably wasn't the best way to start out peace talks in this summit that they were supposed to have. It doesn't seem like someone who's very interested in the peace talk to respondents in such.

"Microsoft, apparently wants to do a shakeup to the windows ten UI, which has been pretty static for a while. "Nancy. Hey I'm so glad to be here with you. Thanks for joining us well yet. Maybe we should start with your ear passes food writer. Tell me about that Schumer. So when I first started working as a journalist it was in nineteen ninety four And I had a knife column in in Los Angeles where I lived at the time and But you know and I was also reading with really super long on features I interviewed cereal. Kalaniiki see and just like really chunky sort of more difficult stuff but you have to bring money right and I thought well what do I like and I was like. Well let food in writing so maybe it dabble in that and get a call one day from this woman that says hey this is Barbara Fairchild from petit and I've been reading your work and I'd like to if you'd like to go skiing for us. In in Sun Valley it was literally those like who is moments call but she had read my narrative. Work look into start. I had a good voice and I wound up writing for not on and off. Mostly travel pieces. They send me to these places for about ten years I did some food writing in La when Jonathan Gold Gourmet for awhile took his column over at the L. A.. Week later it was just something I always kind of did but the reason I n WanNa keep moved up to Portland. I wrote for I wrote restaurant reviews for a week and I had a column in the monthly. But the problem for me is that I never primarily considered myself a food writer. I was doing like really long features and articles and profiles including stops that really I really was invested in but I kept getting known as a food writer. I actually just at some point said I'm not doing it anymore because my my first love was writing different kinds of journalism so I kinda ditched. Yeah well I mean your work as hard hitting and you tackle really really difficult subjects things that tend to fascinate me. I have to just keep following the thread so so so What what have you worked on recently listeners? To check out well I Have I've been waiting for reason magazine And and sort of having to do with with sometimes with free speech or wait now where people are not interested interested in other people having free speech. I've written several articles Roy them having to do with Berlin stuff that happened for instance the city council Banning hate groups but not naming who they were and then the big sort of big got a thing down by the waterfront between the problems and Tika everybody screaming free meet each other. You know we live in a very a very polarized environment right now. We're nobody wants anybody else to be allowed to say anything and that's been sort of fascinating waiting for me. And what a journalist to cover and you've really experienced this personally. In a way that intersects with the food industry Yeah and exercising sizing your free speech Maybe we can talk a little bit about. It was just about a year ago that you launched your video blog right. It actually trait about last December and other journalists nine nine New York. We kept having these really long email threads about stuff. We saw going on in the culture that we thought needed to be aired out One incident was Gento Zinat talion actress. She was Anthony Dance girlfriend. She'd been sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein. Then onto have like a ten year relationship with him on and off she really had become sort of the face of the metoo movement one of the phases of metoo movement. I written about her already. I'd foot night interviewed reviewed her years ago and then After her boyfriend Anthony Bourdain killed himself. it turned out that she'd had sex. The seventeen year olds and Dana had been paying off the seventeen year old and then she denied it and she sort of got caught in a a bad situation that maybe should fessed up to But she didn't initially and my friend. I were questioning whether she was really the best face of the me too. It's like you Wanna be able to have this incredible momentum be able to fly straight and we just didn't think she she was and so we talked about it on air. We talked about some other stuff. My friend had written about some of the heads of the women's March who were deeply anti Semitic and that it was problematic so we talked about things that I didn't think that they were particularly controversial. I thought that they were pretty sensible. And pretty data-based but we live in an environment right. Now we're if you are not sorta according to some people if you're not on that party line like you can only believe this way and if you're not forest against us and Some people in Portland decided that my views were very dangerous. And in order to make their beliefs known went to the press about it and decided the way to to state their displeasure was to a boycott and and really slide. My husband's business restarted roster and It was pretty effective in terms of Really getting the entire city who for fifteen years really loved her husband's business like never problem. family owns. I never. That was something mistake they thought and I thought that was really just wish people would come to talk to me. Because that's what I do. I host shows I interview people all and if People WanNa have a conversation with me I opened that door and we have a lot of writing bad people go online and they can website and see wherever about it but happily we all move on and we go onto the next interesting phases of life and work with more information than we had because when these kinds of things happen can you really try to sit and think all right. So what was this really about. What is really what is really animating people And how do we you better conversations. That's what I'm super committed to always work and and now probably never. Yeah and I just. It's kind of stunning. Yeah I mean your husband. Didn't Johnson is an artisanal coffee roaster and he really just cares about high quality coffee and he had to close one of his locations He lost asked loses biggest customer. Will we have a location at Nikolai. That was the lease was up in a month and the temperature was just so hot and so not that we just want like. Let's just close this early early. Yeah wholesale definitely definitely did flee but one of the reasons was because I mean I know this only because Blah Blah but you know the people that were angry. They called all his customers. And said you know you will drop or Streto or else and that was the problem. People believe me I can understand not wanting to be in the middle of the stuff. It's not fun. It takes a lot of time very stressful but it was. You know super unpleasant situation nation having said that did is doing well. And I'm to lots and lots of projects and you. You know these things happen in your life changes but in many ways it's changed for the better so there you go. Yeah but you know what strikes me as interesting is as if it were another if you had this video blog and your husband had a different sort of business like an accounting firm or an insurance agency. I don't know that this would have happened. I I feel like right now. Food and beverage are so much in the in the public eye that played a role. Well it's visible okay. Like if if my husband had been an accountant it's like frankly. His appliance would have been like whatever they would. They're not the demographic that's going to get super woke up about this kind of stuff right right. So you've got who goes to coffee shops you know young people and then we'd have reading series and we'd always had it had been a very sort of friendly and social environment. So you know they're going to try to hit you. Were you hurt. I mean if they come around like wow. Nancy is a terrible frisbee player. Like I don't mm cure but they make sure that you know it's going to affect you and it's going to be public because that's we're sort of I guess The satisfaction what really does make me SAM on. I've talked about this a lot before the idea that people will take pleasure in uh other people's suffering I mean seriously catherine I just cry. It's like that's this. This way is really lies madness. You know if you just think the way to forward in the world is to make sure were that people. You don't like suffer publicly. This is a this. Is Everybody's what he's doing this on the left and the right right now. I watched the impeachment hearings today. It's not a good way to live and I don't think it's a good way to live for the people who are proponents of it either. It's just it's unhappy

Jason Brown on Automating Your Financial Life

"Hello and welcome. I'm nick and this is moving up a podcast about secrets to success. Struggles along the way in life in general then the pod Jason Brown down the CO founder and CEO Tally. If you don't know a tally is that oh man. You're really going to enjoy hearing this conversation but quickly. The gist is that it's an automated finance platform. That can do some pretty incredible things and really just hearing Jason Talk about what the future of consumer finances is so intriguing rigging okay. That's all for me. Let's get into the conversation with Jason Jason Slocum. Welcome to the PODCAST. Thanks for having me. We're we're in this weird room at money twenty twenty. I'm glad you found it. Three or six is nice and quiet so all we got that and I just mistakenly said you were an la guy. But your San Francisco are you. Are you from San Francisco. Is that what you grew up. I grew up in a little ski town in Colorado called Breckenridge who grew up in Brook Park City. Oh No kidding I actually prefer park city to Breckenridge so Nothing to complain about Breckenridge but it's a lot a lot faster to get to park city. So that's what proxy has going all the places in Colorado and Sun Valley in Miami and stuff are prettier than park city because they're more remote but easy to get to it is records is a cuter town though. Oh Yeah I mean. That's everything about the Callao towns prettier better everything. Actually all has is the easy to get to. Oh well has more than that but for the I was a good to talk to another mountain. Did we actually have a long comment. I've actually had several not several zero but like three or four other people on the podcast that we uncovered the same thing. Then like you're kind of bonded actually one of the five founders. FACEBOOK Grew up in Sun Valley located. No kidding wow were you on the scheme in high school and I mean pre high school I would ask and then I'm sure with you. It's going to be really serious about school or are you. It sounds like you guys have a winner school. We can go to school all summer. Long have the winter or summer. We did not but I think in steamboat. They did. That's where a lot of Olympians came from but one of the one of the guys on my ski team I went to the Olympic. So it was it was it was still pretty Hardcore data is awesome dickey missing. Yeah I did but it was cross country so proper entry. Yeah freestyle cross-country. It's the it's the kind of skiing you see in the Olympics where they're like skating That was okay see. I don't I don't know anyone that in proxy that that does that kind of scheme. Yeah it was. It was the kids because you have to wear SPANDEX. I love it and of course sucks. Thank you these tally. Sorry for those of you. That are listening if you If you download the tally APP which is fully automated manager. The core experience is the home screaming. And it's actually really a picture of a person sitting drinking coffee with their feet on the table and I wearing socks going no sock. Yeah wearing these socks and so we We've built An automated platform that can do financial thinking financial work for you and we have to financial jobs. We do Which is have my credit card debt and then set money aside for me so are are kind of ethos? Is We set very high bar for what automation means. It's not recommendations it's not advice. It's actually doing the thinking and the work so so that you can have your feet on the table. So everybody at tally. When you join you get you? Get a pair of tally sucks. I love it and we got into a little bit of of of tally there. But like let's let's start earlier in the background. Like where do you up in cool. Ski Town Kid You WanNa like go to a big city for college like I want to do. What's going through your mind? Will it was for me. Actually I had always wanted to be an entrepreneur actually I've a little flyer that my mom saved. She showed me a couple years ago but I went door to door offering would stacking and poop scooping services when I was nine and actually when I was a freshman in college I started my first company which I ended up growing to four hundred employees dot. I built a one of the largest residential house painting companies in Massachusetts so I actually moved moved to To Boston to start this company. Anthony as a teenager and that company got acquired and I built a a couple of other companies thereafter. So I've just always been in love with the idea of You know taking an idea that you're passionate about from scratch and turning it into something and At least for me tally is the thing that's been closest to my heart. Because growing up there was just a lot of There's a lot of anxiety in our household around money and my mom in particular. Is this really dynamic eccentric. SMART person she works. It's really hard. Runs her own business and despite all of that She just there's just a lot of A lot of financial financial stress and she really hasn't been able to reach Chennai ever financial goals. So I was just like man. I want to build a service. That's capable of taking the load off of people and allow them to live their lives lives and so my mom. She's an exercise and she's a Ravi again. It's like you do all that okay and we're GONNA pay all your bills and manage everything for you just like if you had like a team of five. I people working for you and I want to build that into software so that we cannot take take all that All that off of off of the human experience plate and allow people to just do what they love right so this is an interesting kind of play. I always get to it so you grew up in an entrepreneurial family like this was instilled in you from from day one it was never. I'M GONNA go work for some big bank or something you know any my parents were Were Very Encouraging that we we should charter on path. And Actually I was home schooled for the first All the way through sixth grade and end you know I mean even my mom. She's like. Hey what do you Wanna learn and I was like well. I WANNA learn about taxidermy. She's like okay so she went through the yellow pages and cold. Called taxidermists is and found one that would let us camp out in their workshop for a a week or so and like we'd go there and you learn about the taxidermy business in all the chemicals they use and everything things so it was just this idea of. Hey the world is your oyster. You just have to be willing to go you know make phone call or knock on the door and go explore and you can learn anything. You want You just have to be willing to go after it so Feel really really fortunate. It's really empowering way to to educate here's some crappy don't Wanna learn learn it memorize. Yeah like learns actually care about exactly and it's just that that intrinsic motivation. My parents were always. It was all about curiosity and chasing your curiosity so for me. I was never at a point where I dreaded school like I always like. I couldn't wait to go to school like me when I hear my friends talking about. Like the next game of thrones. I haven't watched that here. It's over but when they were talking about the next episode that excitement and anticipation. That's kind of what I felt going to school because I was like. What am I gonNA learn? And what new ideas am I gonNA the House. Oh yeah that was definitely thanks to my parents okay. So then. What's the start of this of this house painting company? Yeah it was just I mean when you're eighteen years old old end Wanting to start a business I was like. Hey I want to do something. That will require a lot of employees because I really wanted to learn about leadership and I wanted to learn about on just like the actual people side of running a business and so that seemed like an accessible thing for me and the first year I had about Fifty employees and then ended up going from there to About four hundred when I sold the company and honestly I mean I I did eventually get an NBA from University of Chicago. But I learned more in those couple years running house painting business than I. I haven't any other point in my life and just just a complete crash course in you. Know recruiting in hiring firing managing on challenging situations on creating a management structure. All all of that was It was just this really really stressful. Suppose the most stressful point in my life but it was the place where I got A. I don't know if you've heard of the ten thousand arose but I I got a good chunk of my ten thousand hours of of building. It managing a company in the in College Shar so you started it in Colorado or Massachusetts in Massachusetts so I ended up going to school Boston University and I went the two classes at Bu but other than that. I was working the entire time. So I don't know a single person from view at least that did you graduate. I did I'm a buckner so I I graduated highest honors but literally. I'd be sitting in the back. I'd have my laptop open. I'm like sending emails like dealing with issues. And then I'd have my notebook on the other side taking notes so it was a very multitasking signs. Do you regret that. I do not I did go to business school for the reason that I wanted in intellectual vacation and when I was in business school I really enjoyed myself. I worked at a venture capital firm. I wanted to. I thought for a little bit I wanted to be a VC. But I realized that. I'm an operator Raider. But I took like a machine learning courses like I just went like super deep in finance and I just had a blast in college or I'm sorry and business school so I made up a little little bit for the sacrifice. Is The path Painting Company Sell Painting Company business. School no I started a new company after the painting company when I graduated. And we It's called Bass Dot Com and We ended up Boo Shopping the company. All the way till seven years in The only money we took was twenty twenty million for maybe S. capital partners after it was already very successful and You know kind of more to the private equity stage but we actually actually wrote our own screen sharing software so this was way way back in the day and what our vision was is that you know. This was in the birth of spyware and like people's computers were constantly having issues so he said we want to have a PC care subscription service so that any normal consumer Ken Press a button and have remote tech support instantly without having to talk anybody and then every quarter. Our our technicians would remote into the computer and maintain it to prevent issues like changing oil in the car. And so that was our our brain child right out of college in down built that up and then I was like. Hey you know what I. It's been a lot of hard work. I WANNA go take this vacation Chicago and it was. It was wonderful two years. That's actually where I met my co-founder from next to company so awesome and so you said you intern. During between years one and two the I did YEP in Chicago. Ah note was in Silicon Valley so there's a A Pacific Northwest Venture capital firm. They do a series they investing called Voyager capital and. I actually really was just supposed to intern. But they kept. Were having me look at deals and do work when I went back to Chicago. Yeah so it really taught me a lot. I learned a lot about fundraising and how bad most pitchers are. I learned how painful it is to be on that side of the table when pitches a really bad And I also learned that. It's I mean no offense to anybody who is a V. V. C. but it's a very passive sort of world you're like you're trying to identify and pick value creators but you're not like creating value yourself in for for at least my disposition. I just love
