We know there are some history that none of us really knew about. Even he didn't know about about his own grandparents. He has a father whose abusive but talented. They weren't a destitute family by any means In their neighborhood louisville it was. It was a family that was probably doing better than some others. But i think the the foundation of who ali became as a person. How did he develop this kind of unpolished. Personality is non compromising personality at such a young age. That's really one of the central questions to understanding. Ali and i think it goes to understanding american history. You know when. I interviewed dick gregory for this book. He said to me e books not going to be worth a damn. If you can't explain. What made a kid from the jim crow south same age as emmett till think that he could talk back to white people and get away with it that he can call himself the greatest when everybody around him was telling him he was a second class citizen. You got to be able to understand what made ali capable of that. And it's a really difficult question. I mean it's really complicated. Part of it is that he grows up in. Not the deep south louisville thinks of itself as more progressive. There are some opportunities That wouldn't be available to him anywhere else For example to to walk into a boxing gym at age twelve and have a white cop offer to help him and to be to get in the ring and mix it up with white kids. You know so great and it kind of it kind of reminded you told you what's wrong with boxing today that you don't have the best fighting each other that you have promoters won't allow it. But i mean you got these these power brokers three or four five of them that control the a little realm and a they get paid by the networks. So that's what makes them healthy. That's what makes them. You know powerful. And they just protect their staple fighters on that in that network every once in a while they sell out and they go across the street fight so because they have to they they're mandated to they don't have enough guys to continue to fill the cards on network so they have to do that. But for the big big fights you know just one poster child right now would be spence and qualify. It's it's not getting made and and it's it's not getting me because of what i'm talking about. Because the promoters owner to control the different fighters and then i couldn't allow them to fight other if they don't have control unless it becomes sta magnitude of become so enormous like it did with our mayweather that you have no choice.
