Suffolk Coronavirus: County Beaches Open To Residents Only
"Suffolk executive Steve alone announced that county beaches will be for county residents only Mr baloney joining us on ten ten wins before we get into how would actually you're going to enforce this let's be clear which beaches you're talking about because Long Island as county beaches town beaches state beaches so we're talking about the two ocean beaches in Suffolk County Smith point beach and cop saga beach okay and how exactly will you be enforcing this county residents only so we'll be enforcing that at the gate as people come in we'll be checking they would either have their green card the green key card or they would have their license indicating the residents in Suffolk County so you're going to be checking up people in the car personally not just the car with the badge we're going to be checking the drivers who are coming in to determine whether the car with the people are from Suffolk County because we know that we have limited capacity with the state's order and we know that other municipalities have made the determination not to open their facilities we have to make sure that Suffolk County residents will have access to their beaches okay joining is Steve alone Suffolk County executive I just want to go back to the point that you just made you you said you're checking the the driver of the car are you you will you be will people be speaking to each person in that car no they'll be checking the driver to see that the car is the driver the car has a Suffolk County address no license or green key card which goes to Suffolk County residents okay so this will be by vehicle so if your vehicle okay so if you're on your bike out there and you're not a Suffolk County resident do you have your on your bicycle and you can buy your way and then you would be able to gain access I also we were wondering how you were going to enforce this precisely I know that the Nassau County executive has been somewhat critical of mayor de Blasio's order keeping beaches closed in the city they are expecting so does spill over in Nassau County how do you see this affecting Suffolk County well I mean we do have a concern about that you know you see most of the major beach facilities in the region are opening up even across state lines and you know that's important because you want to provide as much access to people my feeling on this is when you get to Memorial Day weekend people are going to be looking to go to the beach if the weather is right you're going to get crowds there no matter what you do it's far better to have safety protocols in places people are coming and start that right from the beginning of the season that's why it's it I think it's important to to open those beaches let's go back to the two county beaches with these restrictions Smith point park cuts on what are the restrictions once you get there they're not going to be to capacity right that's right so they'll be a limited capacity the governor's order has fifty percent production when you are in your space on the beach there will be staff on the beach that we working to make sure that groups household groups of socially distance you can have your your chairs and a blanket there and while you're in that personal space you can remove your face covering when you're in the water we can have more more lifeguards we can spread people out you'll be able to social distance in the water you will obviously require face covering there but when you're moving about the rest of the facility on the boardwalks or using the restrooms of the concessionaires when those are permitted to open that you'll be required to wear this face coverings will also be taking temps of the staff they'll be wearing face coverings and will have bathroom attendants will be cleaning on a continual basis and in addition to the county beaches do you know what the plan is for the town beaches and we're all waiting to hear that the towns I have been having conversations about re opening they were expected to release a a planned but we have not heard what exactly their plans are and before we let you go were speaking to Steve along county executive Suffolk County executive where to Suffolk stand now when it comes the seven benchmarks governor Cuomo is requiring for the phased reopening can you make any predictions about a time line about some businesses that will be able to re open we're making a lot of progress we're now at five of the seven metrics once we have contact tracers online will have six of the seven we're hiring working with the mayor Bloomberg team at the John Hopkins university we're onboarding people this week because we're getting close elective surgeries are able to start again in Suffolk County so I'm very hopeful that we will be moving towards that phase one opening in the next couple of weeks and one more question about the beaches and I want to go back to the county beaches how long will this is this just for the holiday weekend this enforcement for county residents only or is this going forward for the time being this will be indefinitely but we'll be monitoring and to make a determination as we move forward this could change and it just as the season progresses but for right now this will be the this will be the rule that's in place for the foreseeable future okay thank you very much Steve Bellone Suffolk County executive joining us on ten ten wins with the beach rules going forward as we head into the holiday
