I feel like I am constantly pitching celebrities and publicists. So let me ask you before we even get into the making of this. How were you able to score and interview with Bad Bunny? Luckily I had interviewed him before I interviewed him at the Latin grammys in two thousand eighteen. And I seem to have caught him at a time where he was definitely. You know making it big in the Latin space but had just you know started to crack the anglophone market and I went to the Latin grammys and figured what this is where I'm going to find him. Generally bad bunny is a bit of an elusive chanteuse. So he to quote Mariah Carey He doesn't like doing very many interviews and at the time I got like maybe fifteen twenty minutes with him honestly. He's just such a freak. I love it. I feel like Latin music has been sorely lacking in legit freaks. And I'm someone who had described myself as a freak by that. I mean people who are not afraid to try new things people who aren't afraid of like breaking ground who aren't afraid of experimenting whether it's like you know like bad bunny. I think it's in both his style like personal style and also in his music and in the ideas that he shares so I kept in touch. With the publicist. Sue Haley. Sola in I told her I was like I really want him on the cover of rolling stone and she was like okay. Let me know how we can make that happen was like well? Let me know the next time. He's putting out an album and we'll start to work on it. I think lake just every time they would talk about the cover. I be like I think bunnies GonNa do something really big soon. We should be ready for it. there's also the Jaylo insecure a super bowl coming up. I didn't know he was going to be performing with them but I suspected because he did that song with Jaylo before He might be one of their surprise guests. And then he appeared. Soi in Swarovski crystals in so I went back to my bosses and I was like look this dude. He's blowing up like he performed for the biggest most mainstream television audience in the United States at this point like come on and they were like. Okay let's talk about it so I talked to sue Haley and I was like I think we need to make an impression and she was like okay. He's going to be on fallon. Why don't we stop by your office? I was like stop by the office. Bring a few of the songs I'm going to invite my editors and then they can hear the music and like chat with him a little bit and so he came to the office and I only invited like maybe six or seven people and within like two songs. The office just filled up with people. Once they realized bad bunny was in. The office went from like ten people to like fifty sixty people crowded into the conference room. Just like listening to his music. He played a few songs and people were super stoked. I mean the energy in the room was just like so. It was just like dynamite. You know like people were dancing. Kinda grooving with it editors for like are a we can. We can see the appeal and he's so charismatic even for people like who don't speak Spanish. He's his charisma. Just like shines through. They were like all right. Let's do a cover like that's how it happened. How did Gabriela Bailing Gary Get to shoot the cover? Oh it was. It was an idea our creative director had. We couldn't fly anybody there. So Katrina was like. Why don't we ask bad? Bunny if there's anyone like within close proximity to him who might be able to take some nice photos and like she'd already taken photos for him a lot of the photos that you saw in his instagram. I mean over the past three years. She's taken those photos. They've been dating for three years and he hadn't gone public with her and I didn't go into this in the story. A lot of people they say nasty things about people's partners especially because she's a civilian. She is not involved in any of this. She's not a celebrity and so he kind of wanted to protect her. But of course in quarantine. It became apparent that he had someone there with him. And who better to photograph him than the Woman? Who's been secretly photographing him this entire time. At least like his assent in so she took amazing photos. She really did and she did it with an iphone which. I love did it. Add an element then to also be able to have the first let the Anna shoot a cover for ruling. Yes absolutely I mean. I think I'm going to get in trouble for saying this. Because it's it's a fact like most of the people who shoot covers and it's not just at rolling stone but it's across the board in print journalism. Most of them are men. I think it's amazing in a way like how this worked out. At first we were so scared we were like. Oh my God. Are we going to make this happen? Are we GONNA have to shoot this cover over zoom like what take I just really love? The gabby like agreed to do this and she knocked it out of a park. I'm like really proud of her. And Benito's really proud of her to. I told him in an interview I was like. Did you know that your girlfriend is going to be the source To cover? He was like he's like. Oh this is gonNA saw It's GonNa be such an unremarkable cover story because up to report it over video But I do think that as the story came along as I worked on it with my editor Christian hoard I mean I think he was really encouraging and he was like look. "Thank you so much and welcome back to the show Mattila Karen. Lyle live with you now. And we're efforting as as they say to bring into Robin Knox Johnston one of the great sailors in the history of Solo sailing How did you Karen this? And so we're here the whole time before we can get Robin on the phone How did you find to make a connection with Sir Robin well? We've been I've been in connection with the clipper round the world race. He actually May. I make a comment that we have people in Peru listening for The La- we're GONNA do on the young And that's going to be played at the end of our segment at nine fifty four instead of nine thirty seven so we have those little commercials That through segment will be at nine fifty four. So you're saying that's that's that's the free minute break is what you're talking about. Yes yes 'cause the three minute breaking. We healthcare commercials. Who said of that that we have you know anyway? It's going to be at nine fifty four. Okay so Robin Knox was the founder of the clipper round the world race and I have been in contact with the cup around the role race. We you know. We just interviewed goal. Stoker in the studio Not Too long ago and also Wendy Tech when she was here with the Navy who was a captain the net and Sir Robin Knox was the person who actually was the first person to Solo circumnavigate and he founded the race and so His staff connected with him for this interview. What would you say about? He did all this the first time in one thousand nine hundred sixty eight on a thirty two foot bermudan catch but when I say Bermudan catch what comes to mind. Karen catch is a is a A boat that has to mass and the one in in the in the back towards the aft of the boat is smaller than the one in front which is a little bit above above center towards the valve the boat where at worst the longest. You've Gone Solo Karen me I'm not a solo circumnavigator. I am a crew here. I usually I usually. I use double hand in hand with with a partner which double-handed doesn't mean I have to it doesn't mean that we have two hands between us. It's for him between us. Got You so. Have you put any more thought into Were you when you get. Outta Dodge and you have to get onto your boat and escape alien apocalypse where you're GONNA go Yes and I've got my my stash of seven and block and cocoa powder so you're welcome to join me and we can. We can have chocolate and wine not a wine drinker but thanks for the offer anyway plus before we got to the Golden Gate right all right. Karen. What are you When when I say th- There things you hear anything. Oh yeah yeah the the whitbread round the world race. You know. That's something that you always hear of but I remember as a kid hearing that it would be you know like every three four years but it wasn't exact and then I heard like it no now. It's the Volvo race. Where did that all come together? The whitbread well each each race is is basically hosted by a race committee oftentimes sponsored by their A nonprofit organization or DOT COM and And the names like Volvo or Rolex are usually the names of the sponsors of the race has helped pay for Part of the the expenses of of organizing so there there really are Probably about forty or fifty world races. That are that are of note and then just even along the California coast over five hundred races. That happen every year. Just on just in California and So then that's that's not all of the same. As the Whitbread Bama roll rates the ocean maces but getting a lot of sailors fair allows China sells part DOT com. We're shooting the s while we're waiting for Sarah Knox Johnson. Maybe maybe we don't. I think what's amazing if you know me. I'm a big history. Buff and Sir Robin or you know you have. We have gotten coming because it's not. I can add him on my phone college. Where if we're having difficulty connecting there you can go ahead and try to add him and then I'll watch you can you? Can you can shoot the breeze while I did that. Hold on all right. I'll sing a song feelings. Nothing Mauve and no one of the titles that Sir Robin Knox Johnston has said. He's a sir. Now this is all you know as you say you go up through the ranks and I think it's interesting when you think about how a Duke is beneath the Prince and then you go to earls and counts and something. I never thought of until recently that when you say the county that was like the earldom or the Of the princely realm the county means the area that is run by the count. The we don't have we have county supervisors the county that comes from the term count. Anyway when you are going to be a night and you are knighted by the monarch of course all of my lifetime. Maybe there's as well has been Elizabeth Regina the second some butthead. They do say Regina the it's like in Canada but you get to the title of Knight Bachelor. That is the first one you get. So you're knighted but you are not inducted into the orders of chivalry. That's the next stage. But if you think I'm only a Knights Bachelor if you are a Knights Bachelor though. That is the oldest sort of Night Knights Bachelor was introduced by Henry the third that Henry the third ever have I have. I have rather than knock night. I Knox Johnston on the same night on the phone with me. And so you can say hello there. Yes Sir Robin. Thanks for joining us. Can you I was just talking about you being a knight of the round? Can you talk about putting on your top hat and getting suited and booted when this all went down at Buckingham Palace? Yeah it's a pretty special occasion Extremely efficiently run. The nicest thing about it is that your wife becomes a lady and she just recognized for once all the support. She's giving you very important to say yes. I should mention that one of the reasons that he was knighted. He became the first person to singlehandedly. Non Stop circumnavigate the globe. That was in one thousand nine hundred ninety nine and then he went it again and did it in two thousand seven. I can just imagine from your original sue. Haley Bermudan catch to all the equipment that you might have had a no seven was almost being on a spaceship. The second time around good parallel. It's rather like comparing the Wright brothers. The phone call the differences that could in saving Yeltsin equipment and the cost things satellites Suddenly we've got instant communication so she certainly didn't have fifty one years ago now. Grassy thinking the satellite that I was able to bring you into the show today. Well that's right but I had the same problems at that. Time can with we just type trying to get through to you on skype omits work in Syria. Never Buddy Rogov right right a lot of STRESS TO BE INTERNET SYSTEMS WITH EVERYBODY. Sneezing home Surviving tell me an instance in one of your first trip around the world of of of what it was like to be in isolation for so long did you were the only one on board and and doing that journey by yourself. Someone else we this the other day because now shutdown over here and someone said well you know what should people do. And I said we'll get a project and he said well look you went to sail and that's hit me busy I I think people. Just sit with a glass of Gin and tonic in your hand. And that's it no you don't. It's not just you've got to navigate the thing in those days by the stars and the Sun. No satellites again. You've got the constant maintenance you've got comes from thinking of your tactics know whether inflammation so you're watching the crowds watching the barometer watching the wind direction you gotta feed yourself in the middle of it. You gotta get some seat so actually every street and busy when you had your problems around Cape Horn with yourself stirring problems and others and then you know that guys like then Watts Sea is on hot on your tail. What was that like knowing that you couldn't see him that you knew people were racing behind you. Like that that an impetus. I mean you I discovered All New Zealand when I spoke to journalists on a fishing boat that I go to good lead but he was still there some other people that appeared and disappeared. But I you know I got a lead my talk. This is too good to give up. I gotta hold onto this lead. I've just GONNA keep pressing on hot out out and keep this boat in one piece. Look after I'd make sure she can make the voice because no one unit for Bait would stay one piece at home and seventy minor precious in a way because you accepted them at the time. You set up for Competition you're feeding competitive. That site alive. I think it's great that y'all go ahead carry a lot of times. It is the relationship you have competitors that keeps you going isn't it would it would it be encountering if I've had any contact with them Before I said I didn't I hadn't met any of the others the other. I knew some of them. I knew Matteo the the others shaped by that. New enriched way but the others will need to me We didn't have time to see each other before we we had no communication between each other bother out there see but my overheads. The communication was a single side band. Radio set with Fayed Limited pop. And you'd have to arrange in the bouncing to each other so he compares tune in at the same time and you know that was that made it almost impossible anyway so be honest your house to my radio down south of South Africa then limited communication. I couldn't Mitt to tell them I was. I could listen in but I couldn't. She respond to any calls. Made me that is a that is a big time for one more question and I know Peter Nichols urine some books with Peter. Rick Nicholls wrote a book about that race. Nine men set out to raise each other around the road. Only one made it back of books called the voyage for Madman. You are the one that made it back to you. You seem. You don't seem like you're quite barking. Mad To me Sir. Robin do you think you have to be a little bit mad to do this? Type of that book was sounders own. Think quite the same ones. We're getting away from bureaucracy. We're getting away mobile pressures above them live with with nature in the raw. That's what we're focused on. But he was a C. Which is unforgiving and the other studio I think. That challenge is spiritually uplifting. It's something we can cope with that we didn't open. Because you felt you cope with it so I think in a way where the ones who showed that we were probably noble of most is Sir Robin Knox Johnston sailing icon and legend. Thank you so much for your time. Sir Sorry about the technical problems. Glad we got you on. We really appreciate and we'd love to talk to you again sometime if you could thank you. "It is. He's everywhere. He's like the fat heads now at college basketball games. He's all over, Twitter and social media. He's this is his legacy now. And it's unfortunate because we're very loyal. And he told a great story if you a company, wouldn't you hire him for that dedication? Absolutely. I'm sure he's I'm sure he's making some money off of this publicity. But this. Owning owning owning. I'm all for our man. It's a great story talking about going into the office and committing sex acts to get water for your festival because you have no water that is. I mean the way that he was just so genuine and real about. Yeah. They were running out of water on this island. And the only way he thought he was going to be able to get it was to go into one of these big wigs his office and perform sex acts for the water who's willing to do it. He goes, okay. I'm loosening up here because I'm going to have to get water for for what was it? How many people were going? Something like a thousand thousand thousand fifteen hundred people. Yeah. But think about the way that he said it was like, dude, I totally understand your panicking. You have got tens of millions of dollars on the line. I think the guys get knocked for that. Obviously that he. I applaud the guy. Yeah. No. It's not like he was doing something outside of what his sexual orientation was either. No, no, right. So what I mean? That's the only thing actually, but you are seriously trying to save this festival to any length. Any extreme that you can go to I think it'd be degrading if it was someone that was otherwise, I still think that's what I'm just saying. If somebody made me do that too. I I applaud the guy was a phenomenal statement that he made I thought it was complete honesty and just extreme extreme just being a genuine person in interview, which is so rare. That's why that documentary so damn good. Because the people that they talk to really were impacted by really felt the stress really felt the panic, and you can feel it as you're watching the documentary again fire festival this guy Billy McFarland screwed over so many people out of so much money. He's the mastermind when it comes to creating Capers. And taking advantage of people. But he's paying for it. Now only six years he's paying for it. Anyway, that's the last thing I'm going to say about fire festival. Two more quick dates, and then we'll move on McFarland is imprisoned with jersey shores, the situation who is actually in there for tax. Asian what's he and therefore tax fraud? So they're gonna do a fraud scheme together. Probably and then all the models that made that big promo video for the fire festival KENDALL. Jenner ability sued Haley, Bieber are facing subpoenas or have to testify in court whose Haley Bieber Justin bieber's, fiance wife. Yes. Use behavior. Question for you guys rhythm. Everyone loves the babes right people. Love beads. The guy went the route that everyone thought what are you doing you idiot, like just follow Timberlake in a way? You don't have to be destroys route. And you'll be fine. Now, he's just like he's obsolete. The other the the kid making the way is that Shawn Mendez kid. He's following. Oh my God. You know? I just saying the only reason why I bring it up is like dude, if you wanna go career path go with the most successful entertainers ever, if they're giving you like all the options, the follow take it who you're going to benefit from it in the Lou hell is Shawn Mendez. No, this is it was like ten least favorite song when she was a little kid. You know, how I knew it was a favorite song. Fell asleep. Everytime. Stop crying. So it was amazing fantastic. That's funny. You can take the Derek Jeter out. A-rod route. Okay. Which would you? Well, I like the route. It sounds a little less than Timberlake. One doesn't it doesn't be bad sound a little bit more fun. There's no gift baskets there. If you know what? I mean sure there was didn't Alex Rodriguez day Cameron Diaz. They both did a lot of work off camera. I saw cameras in the mask both. That's her best movie best movie. All right. There's one more thing. I want to get round. Yes. This is pretty important to me personally, actually, signed a petition for this to happen. Oh, great. There are reports that Roger bumps the voice actor of Squidward tentacles on SpongeBob squarepants scheduled to introduce the halftime entertainment show at the Super Bowl. Do you know the SpongeBob episode when they play at the Super Bowl called band geeks? The balloting do not I've never seen the best thing of all time episode of that. And you I hate SpongeBob squarepants you hate that. Yeah. You guys just hate fun. Makes sense. Why did you hate sponge? Because when it was every ten AM game that we had the minor leagues. Yeah. It was kids say okay that song Blair minimum three times. Ooh. See? You're going serious. Just bagging my way. I've never been more paranoid in my life than those games. The place is packed all little kids not paying attention. And it just it at minor league parks. They're so close it scared. The crap out of you get in trouble in the head with a nice side. And it's not fun. It's like the fact that like, these these Myrlie organizations, do it is awesome. But at the same time. There's no one paying attention. It's lease Marlins at Marlins park. They did not early ten AM game. But they did the SpongeBob. Yeah. Talk about hearing that song in a stadium. Not packed. It's echoing. I love it. I love it. I love everything about SpongeBob. It's the greatest thing ever. And they're doing this by the way, because the creator died recently, and they want to pay tribute to Judy so guy who wrote and created the character. Yes. And band. Geeks is one of the first episodes. It's fantastic. Superfan of SpongeBob. Our house. Thing we talked about in baseball westbound. Are you one of those guys who is Simpson Rosen's that always has crap everywhere on their desk? College crap. Sorry. I can't close the yearbook just got back from Santa Barbara anyways. How was that? By the way. Do we ask you? That was good. It was good. Good time had fun car baseball. We can was great. And then anyways, there's a prop bet on it that maroon five will play the song, and it's actually favored. Yes that they will play. The SpongeBob song started off. It's fantastic. If you haven't looked at the video band geeks. Who were that's that's who the halftime show is as maroon five maroon five Travis Scott. And I think big boy from Atlanta. So big boy cats, I love I love outcast Alcazar. So great. I always thought you know, how tool is to metal. Metal has always they they absolutely except tool. The band tool into the end of the John Mara. That's how Al cast is where I think for hip hop. It's different. It's completely different. But it's accepted by the hip hop heads that outcasts is a part of that shopper. There. They're one of my all time favorites for sure last thing. Are you kidding me? Everything about that album, Mustang Catania. Can we get some outcasts coming back? Yeah. Well, we'll get you lined up here. All right after the phrase of the day for millennials. Oh god. And then we'll and this godforsaken segment. God you guys are having no fun. I'm having fun talking to you. I'm having fun. Talking about SpongeBob. The phrase of the day is STAN do you own a Stanton's stand? Like Eminem song STAN where your super fan of something? Yes. You got it. I got it. Right. Yeah. Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. You gotta win. I got some. Yeah. I did. I was like just you got those things stand. I was like thinking stands donuts is. So if he's Anna Claire. That's way. Well, that's a pretty good dance donuts. Also in Wayne's world. Stanley Cup or Stanley's who's the guy that owned the Donut shop and Wayne's world stan-? Stamp Makina donuts. Yeah. But so okay. Sorry.
