Why Are Republicans Putting Up With This Energy Crisis?

"In Sturgis, Michigan, it is $2 89 cents a gallon. I guess that's better than in California. What is the Granholm plan to increase oil production in America? Oh my God. That is hilarious. Wood that I had the magic wand on this, as you know, of course, oil is a global market. It is controlled by a cartel that cartel is called OPEC, and they debated decision yesterday that they were not going to increase beyond what they were already planning. Incredible. The cliche would take would be, that would be to let them eat cake responsive it. And by the way, the commentator wasn't going for it at all. He asked a very serious question from Bloomberg, and she just starts cackling and laughing. Like, oh yeah, like I could control that. They destroyed the Keystone XL pipeline. They remove fracking and fracking licenses and leases. So incredibly arrogant. And I've called for this for quite some time. We have to tell Republican governors to disobey Joe Biden and resume construction on the Keystone XL pipeline immediately. We've said this on the show for a while. I say this when I travel. Let's just put it into a piece. Have I wrote that PC? I don't think I have yet. I can't remember what we're doing anymore. Write the piece. I will write the piece this week. We'll get it done. And it's very simple. It's that wire Republican governor's putting up with this. Republican governors could fix the energy price crisis now. And people say, well, Charlie, the federal government says that we can't do that. Oh, you mean like how San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland and Seattle? They say they don't want to enforce immigration law, and they allow rapists and murderers to go free without giving them to immigration customs and enforcement. You mean like that kind of disobeying with the federal government? You mean like Colorado, Nevada and Washington and Oregon, saying they're going to legalize marijuana against federal drug law? You mean kind of like that? No, I'm saying that it's long past time that we start to put our country first and say, Joe Biden, thanks for playing, man. You're destroying our energy grid, gas prices are going up in one of the most expensive winters on record. We're going to build the Keystone XL pipeline. And we're going to force you to bring federal agents in and arrest them, but that would require. Let's just put it nicely. Courage

"Is a lot more people than we expect. Everyone's been cooped up. They're ready to get out. Everybody's doing crazy. They're just ready to be out people drinking. Oh my god drinking so much people feel like two. Pm already. They're just going crazy. They're they're all the house or just and i'm hearing wide open. Friday was the busiest first friday. They've yes at the chip. I've been here for seven years. And that was the busiest friday of ever seen like the first friday of the rally we were. We were downtown sturgis last night and at two. Am when they shut everything down the bars and stuff like that people were just getting started like it got rowdy because it was like no. You're cutting off a two and we're ready to go till setup like what's the matter with you like literally we walked out of this bar and there's a line of police officers like fifty of them and it was just like we're like what they're like expecting chaos and i'm like this is. I've never seen this before. It was like. I know. I felt like you were marching to your death or think i've seen this many people two years since the seventy fifth bigger. I think it's going to be bigger hope. So so all the human become sturgis for for quite a while then Yeah i think the lowest deficits four years. At least we've been here eight years ears just one of those town it every year like you look forward to. I know that's my goal ten years in row and i'm like okay may retire after that but who am i kidding album. It's one of those you retire from this but then come back and just hang out right exactly right. This is riding as beautiful. It's one of my favorite things. I make one day a year to try to hop on the back of a bike and go ride somewhere. I was like yesterday. We had a little bit of downtime so we went to spearfish and we went up to the canyon hike to these water. I say hype. It was like really kind of way. Mike trails like literally like wooden trails but it was kind of like just everything around here is so beautiful. I'm glad i took a day to just go and kind extremists some stuff and everybody's riding their bikes to the canyon. But it's like it's beautiful such an amazing area you know. Obviously there's all the fun stuff happening here the chip but outside of that. There's so much cool stuff around here because not rushmore yet. Have you been there so like four years of being here before finally made a trip to a tourist trap at the car.

Montana just didn't work out so that's unfortunate that you have to say no to stuff but it's coming back and i think we're going to be easy later this year. We've got some data kid rock in nevada. What does that fifteen sixteen. October laughlin in spa. There i am there. It is on her own wet t-shirt concert competition are we. We're the judges. And we're in it by tommy. They were due to well-heeled contest. We gotta have tommy in the mix which is always the white flag. Tommy you in right say more. What's your prize for for for jim. Tim and tommy doing thing though. What's the winner. Get no kidding. We should get something. I mean. i've got a bottle of bourbon. Here began giving you some whiskey. I beat him at racing. But i don't know if i could beat him with a wet t shirt contest. Tommy did like with again the trick. We played so true store up there. Dirt fish in tommy and tommy thought he was going to win well. He ended up having a fast time. But we stop watching running the stop. Watch and tim and i. We lied to tell me about his time. Tagged on about five seconds Showed tim one. And tommy about las. It is fight off. I mean he lost. It was funny. Oh yeah yeah. And then. I got called on that technicality. I'm still mad. I think it got me about two seconds. Said i hit a cone. Still coned right. "And people would just stand the pvc pipe dripping on him in cold water. So we've come a long way. We've got a full city like you said here. We've got hundreds of vendors we've got a water and electrical. We've got a full one of the largest stages in south dakota and everything you need is here so you shouldn't need to leave once you get here. Yeah that's a cool thing. I mean not. I mean obviously. We know the musical actor playing this week. I mean you've got some aaa talent. That's playing here. But i mean over the history of the buffalo chip. I mean looking back you guys have had to have some of the most iconic bands and musical acts of all time hall of famers here at the chip. That's got to be. Something are pretty proud of. Yeah we try and keep it top level Topnotch entertainment and usually somebody. That's on the charts yet. Each night and You know for example this last This week we had kid rock in z. Z. top shinedown and we're about to close it out with o. D. so all. I know you've been around this since you were pretty much born. You gotta tell me you gotta have some stories in your back pocket that you've seen here and stuff that you can actually tell about it. Others probably plenty that you can't talk about but there's been some moments that stick out in your mind where you're just like. Wow that was. That was pretty pretty insane. Yeah before we got on the on the on the Recording here we were just talking about how role sands drove his motorcycle off the front of the stage. That's pretty memorable As he was doing it somebody was saying there's no front brakes on that as a reminder just a split second too late and then a couple of years before that. We've got some pretty good national attention when steven tyler of aerosmith in the third song in spun around in just dropped sideways off the front of thrust and broke his collarbone There was the year that John mccain was on his presidential run in he stopped here with cindy and we got some press out of that because he had offered that cindy mccain would be the first first lady to also Been in the midst buffalo chip contest so us offer up in a modeling contest out here. There's all kinds of stories like that. I grew up listening to bands. Like hang keratin. Who's our emcees. Been here for thirty five years and he used to sing in between all the main acts these funny songs like sleeping with to the wall and hoping the lawyer will call and sheep. Don't tell all kinds of razi stuff growing up. It's changed a lot since nineteen eighty two though it's pretty Pretty tame by many means. But you know that's funny though. Because i mean look at the crowd and you gotta mix you said like you got a lot of first timers this year for a lotteries and you know i know. Motorcycle industry exploded last year. You know and people tired of sit home. They went out they bought indians. They bought harleys. They like it's time to have a good time. Hit the road. Lot of first timers here. But i'm looking around the crowd. Go and there's a lot of people have probably been here thirty forty years. You know that have been coming back year after year and you probably see some of the faces of people you see once a year and and they've almost become family over the years. Yeah that's it The whole i think it comes down to human connection. You know that's why people come here. It's music is the How to put it to music is the soundtrack but the real the real root of what we're doing here is building memories for life story and People come together. You make an best friends here. I've made them growing up here and People just keep coming back. We've got the guys that have been here. eighteen years. We got the guys that have been here. Five years Some point along the way they started bringing their ladies too. I remember seeing in in the early nineteen eighties. If you look at a photo out in the front of the stage it was just sausage fast. It was all and at some point. They said that. Hey you guys got to get some electrical water out here. So i can bring my woman and that changed the whole dynamic. When that's what's crazy. I mean you you know obviously you know. There's a lot of women around here. There's all kinds of wet t shirt contest. Got the bikini bike wash. But i'm looking around going. You know it's not just women right on the back of the bikes now. There's a lot of women ride bikes themselves. And i think that's actually a pretty cool thing you know that they're like nah. I gotta ride on the back of your mom too. Yeah that's true. I think they're saying twenty percent of the market now is is women. purchasing motorcycles and we just recently announced the women's day celebration and that celebrating the women's role in motorcycling with full day of activities of women's workshops working on bikes Welding workshops and women ride But it's also it's not exclusive it's inclusive so it's Male and women supported events Just celebrating that fact right there that you're talking about well. It has been awesome catching up my friend. I mean i'm taking this all in first time for me at the chip. I've been here last I think this is number. Three for me but Just an amazing venue. You guys have done a phenomenal job. I mean i can't wait for some of the music to come. I've been having a great time. And i got to tell you for a first timer this year for me. I would definitely be back this year. You gotta tell me what the What stuck out the most so far to be honest with you so far like you walk into the property and you hear a lot about it but to me the magnitude i mean. We're standing up here on the second deck and i'm looking and you just see row after row of motorhomes rv's people. I mean bikes. I have never seen this many bikes in one place at one time in my entire life. I mean it's just a see motorcycles. It's just it's just awesome. Everybody's having a good time. Everybody's got smiles on their faces. People are living life here. You know and it's they're out there experience life. They're not chained to the to the couch. And i think that's what's great. I mean people out here. You know just doing what we're supposed to do and that's enjoying the world and that's to me that's the biggest takeaway here. It's just. I'm looking at the people. All having a blast. Yeah and that's that's a special thing about it is to be involved in this. Is this that people legitimately want to be here. And everybody's happy to be here and it's some of the nicest people ever and When you get people together we want to be there and have a good time. You know what happens. Is you have a good time absolutely well. It has been a blast catching up with you. Thanks for coming on the show and Thanks for everything. You guys are doing here. Buffalo chip thank you so much. All right we har- here with my boy. Tim montana. I gotta tell you tim. I don't know if i told you the last time you on here. I actually got him in trouble. The fcc so yeah i got. I got a little trouble. National networks is there's too many f. bombs s bombs. I said no no. We added those happy now. You did and now you know he added to those out. You missed a few. Oh my god it was actually funny. We didn't find anything. But i got. I got a little slap on the hand warning from big brother. Well gee wilders that's terrible news. I think it's great. It's a good story. It's a good story tim. i'm just gonna. Pg today now. We'll believe anything that slips up telling stories but man we're out here you know. It.

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Sparks Fears of Super Spreader Event

"Now for the second time this week, the US reaching 100,000 new cases of Covid 19 in a single day even as cases soar, massive events are taking place around the country. In Sturgis, South Dakota, 700,000 people are expected for the annual motorcycle rally, leading to fears of a super spreader event. This as hospitalizations grew from 12,000 month ago. More than 61,000. Now. Florida setting a new pandemic record high pediatric admissions are climbing one of those hospitalized 17 year old David Espino. High school football player now battling Covid and pneumonia for the last 10 days. I'm pretty scary. Actually, you can get to anyone they get you if you're 10, If you get you if you're 60, it doesn't matter in Mississippi, where the state health officer says Delta is sweeping over them like a tsunami. Hospital workers feeling overworked Once again, it is almost impossible to put into words, the frustration that they feel in many places. It's not a lack of beds, but a lack of stuff that's stretching hospitals thin. Like at Willis Knighton Medical Center in Louisiana. We don't feel like we have a time to devote to the patients that we need. It's just it's Sorry. I'm getting emotional. Just talking about it in Houston Harris Health System in Crisis mode. This 11 month old patient sick with Covid forced to be airlifted to another hospital because none of the pediatric hospitals in town had room the level of sick visits that we've seen this summer. June, July. And now August. I've never seen in 20 years of practice here in Houston, this as officials hint There could be major developments on booster shots, a source telling ABC News. The FDA is expected to reveal their plan for immuno compromised Americans by early September. We are now working on that, and we'll make that be implemented. South Dakota is about ready to begin and they're expecting seven hundred thousand people. During normal years when we're not dealing with covid-19 Delta variant, I wouldn't want to be around seven thousand. People know I've done the Indy five hundred upwards of over a hundred thousand people. I've done concerts where there have been seventy-five eighty ninety thousand people. I've been in the midst of all these crowds and back. When I worked in radio, I had to be. And so, on my concert up in the music business, I've had to do that too, but I never wanted to be around that many people and what doesn't make sense to me again, with a CO visit around or not is why people want to subject themselves to that many other people. Now, I realize at a big sporting event, a big concert, you got all the action and now that the Delta variant is here. I'm even more terrified of big crowds. I realize we've all got choices to make, but big crowds, I didn't like him before, and I sure don't like them now dead.

Trump Defies Nevada Directive as Thousands Gather for Indoor Rally

"It appears that corona virus doesn't seem to affect Donald trump or indeed any of his supporters at a rally in Nevada. This weekend supporters mostly mask free stood cheek by jowl as president claim that the US has nearly conquered. The virus O'Brien classes assistant professor in global politics at UCLA AND CO author, how to rig an election and he joins me now for an update on the week's election events in the United States Brian Welcome back. Good Morning. Let's begin with this latest rally in Nevada. There's widespread coverage of the fact that social distancing rules will broken practically on every single level going against Nevada state regulations and indeed the national regulations. Yeah I. Mean it's it's just remarkable in mind boggling I mean here in the UK we have new restrictions in place trying to limit the spread of the virus on Friday. There were six new deaths in the UK in the US were over a thousand and you have the president of the United States not just talking about how public health measures should be further rolled back but actually leading by example in doing. So by putting people at risk at his rallies and remember. That in a previous rally that he held indoors in Tulsa. Oklahoma this summer, a former presidential candidate Herman Cain seems to have contracted the virus at that rally in died. So I mean, this is not just putting people at risk in the abstract could actually kill some of the people who are at the rally not to mention infecting others who have made no choice to go to rallies and have been infected by by trump supporters. The many people have said that rally in Tulsa was. A turning point for Donald trump insofar as because of the deaths and because of the large infection rate that followed it, and the fact that that's that whole was pretty one-third empty when that happened it kind of changed his attitude towards everything. The fact that he has so openly you'll. have so openly defied all of the regulations isn't this now just a clearer sign that there is a, there is a public rift now between Donald Trump, the White House, and effectively all the rest of the world science. Yeah, there's there's no other comparison in world leadership I mean you know when? When Donald? Trump. Talked about the virus in the beginning. He called it a hoax. He down played it repeatedly, he lied to the public as we know now with these revelations from Bob Woodward's book in which he privately was saying that this is a very deadly virus in publicly saying there was no risk that it was going to disappear like a miracle but then recall in in April when public health measures were put in place in various states donald trump called on people to liberate those states that was the language used in tweets from the public health measures when masks were recommended by the public health officials, he said they're not required and he took it. Pains to say that you don't need to wear them. So you know there's a reason why the US consistently is having about a thousand deaths today while most most countries in Europe are in the either single digits or low double digits, and you know it's it's just an ongoing problem where the US is effectively given up right now in the US, the worst states are in the upper midwest and the reason for that is because just weeks ago, two hundred, fifty, thousand motorcyclists descended on a small town of seven thousand people in Sturgis, South Dakota, which is allowed to go ahead and it spread a massive outbreak. Of Two, hundred fifty thousand people meeting in the middle of a pandemic doesn't exist doesn't compute in other countries in the world and yet it's being done with Republican leaders sanction. Where is the drive coming forward to defy the regulations into to go in a different path you mentioned the the infamous interview he gave to Bob would march when he said I wanted to play it down I still like playing it down because I don't want to create a panic but at that time he did recognize the he's huge risks of a place by corona virus. Is there a sense that the the decision to make everything feel normal put everyone together in the same room is coming directly from trump or is this a campaign move? I think it is coming from him and I think it is a campaign move. I think it's coming from him trying to argue that he is putting the economy I A lot of this has been with his sort of mindset that we must open the economy and the fundamental mistake that he made in some other world leaders made, and then quickly realized that it was mistake is trying to divorced the economy from the virus. The economy will grow in the virus goes away. The economy will improve when the virus comes under control and so you. The what's happening in the United States is very, very bad as or equilibrium where you have high levels of virus transmission and therefore you have a very low levels of economic recovery because people are still scared and I think the campaign is going to have serious implications for trump not just because of how bad the virus outbreak is for everybody. But specifically, because the people who don't want him to put the economy, I are those who are most vulnerable to the Virus Aka those who are. Sixty five plus and vote a lot. Especially, our key voting demographic in places like Florida and Arizona where they have large retirement communities in their swing states. So if he continues to do this to sort of model behavior that clearly shows that he is willing to put their lives at risk, it's a it's a very big opening for Joe Biden to say to those voters. Look I'm I'm worried about the economy to, but I also don't want kill a whole lot of Americans before you know. Before the virus comes under control through a vaccine or or petering out through her immunity God forbid. So I think this is a very risky strategy and one that could end up backfiring for

South Dakota emerges as new U.S. coronavirus hot spot

"Just before the fourth of July this summer the Republican governor of South Dakota Christie gnome one on Fox News to announce of excitedly that president trump's big July fourth campaign event at Mount. Rushmore would not require attendees to wear masks Hooray and definitely there would be no social distancing she said yeah and sure enough a big mostly mask lists crowd packed in for president trump's rally. Then South Dakota refused to have mask requirement or any kind of changing plans actually for the annual sturgis motorcycle rally last month, which attracted upwards of four hundred, thousand people. The sturgis motorcycle rally has now been linked to hundreds of new coronavirus cases, and at least one death cases in south. Dakota doubled in the two weeks after that event, there's actually a study out today that projects that the Sturgis rally alone may have led to an almost staunching number of new covid infections. South Dakota Governor Christie gnome has defended the sort of covid denial list approach of the state under her leadership saying that South Dakota will not listen to quote in elite class of so-called experts. Under her leadership, the state also ahead this past weekend with its state. Fair. No Corona virus walls for that gathering either. Now, as a few days ago, South Dakota has the highest number of corona virus cases per capita in the whole country. South Dakota's leaders refused to take measures to stop to stop the spread of it. They rejected the warnings of those pointy headed so-called experts. And now, here we are.

"I'm Mary Louise Kelly. And I'm Sasha Pfeiffer last month more than 460,000. People from all over the country descended on Sturgis, South Dakota for the city's annual 10 Day motorcycle rally. They gather there, despite concerns the event was primed to spread Corona virus. South Dakota does not require masks in public or prohibit large gatherings and a majority of residents in Sturgis were against the rally. Now we're starting to get a sense of the impact of that event, including one death. NPR's Will. Stone has been tracking the story and joins me now. And will this rally wrapped up on August? 16th sounds like Kobe 19 cases have been connected to the rally is people who opposed it feared would happen. That's right. The running total is more than 250 cases, according to state health departments and media reports, and these air scattered all over the country. Colorado, Wyoming, Wisconsin, New Hampshire more than 10 states. But the place with the biggest share connected to Sturgis is the home state, South Dakota. It currently has one of the worst infection rates in the country. And now they've linked more than 100 cases to Sturgis. And this is just our best estimate. Every day. We learn of more. So you've said that about 250 positive diagnoses at least But nearly a half million people came to that rally. So 150 doesn't seem like a huge number. Given that a half million people came. No, it's not. But this is far from a complete picture of first, and it hasn't been that long. And experts say we just can't draw too many conclusions yet and tracking this is really hard and we have this patchwork of states reporting the data. Also, people need to know they have the virus and then voluntarily share that they went to Sturgis. Plus, we don't know how many secondary infections there are. So that's how many people caught the virus at the rally and then went on to infect others who never went. So public health experts say We'll probably never know the total number of infections associated with this rally. But of course, there have been cases popping up all over the country, which was exactly the concern that bikers would bring the virus home and spread it. What our public official public health officials saying about that Well, they're pretty frustrated. They say that this was really predictable. One state that's dealing with the aftermath is Minnesota. They've identified more than 45 cases. And one person has actually died. Here's what Chris Ares man had to say She's the infectious disease director at the state's Department of Health. It's definitely frustrating because we certainly are surprised to see cases and we recognize that it is really a result of this competing values so obviously from public health. Their goal is to reduce morbidity and mortality for other people, their value, maybe that their freedom is more important. And this rally became just another flash point. The state's Republican governor, Christie Gnome, who's a strong ally of President Trump, encourage people to come even though cases were starting to trend upwards even before Sturgis Sturgis has about 7000 residents. How did this play out for them? Sturgis actually did some follow up testing for city employees. People who worked at the rally and for residents who wanted Teo just 650 people were tested, but they found only 4% were positive. And that's about what they would have expected to find if they had tested people even before the rally, So, city officials say this is evidence that they did a pretty good job keeping things safe, at least within the city when they held this event. That's NPR's Will. Stone will, thanks for updating us on the Sturgis motorcycle rally. You're welcome. All right to another story now at the fight at the heart of the current fight over the post office is this issue is mail delivery, a public service or is it a business? Keith Romer from our planet money, podcast explains. That is a question that goes back 50 years in 1970 President Richard Nixon sent in the National Guard to deliver the mail because postal workers wouldn't do it. We wanna work. They've gone on strike for better wages. Either they give us what we should have all we will stay on. Like until hell freezes over. The post office has been inefficient and highly politicized for a long time, and both Democrats and Republicans wanted to reform it in 1970 after the strike, they did. Congress gave postal workers the Rays they wanted, but also fundamentally transformed the post office from a pure public service to something more like a business. Until that point, the post office was a department of the federal government. That's David Trimble from the Government Accountability Office, he says. The old version of the post office Made a lot of its money from stamps, but the rest of it had come out of the federal budget. They received about 25% of their operating expenses in the form of appropriation. But under the new law, Congress was no longer going to fund the post office. The new Postal Service got to keep its physical post offices, the mail trucks the uniforms, but it still had the obligation to deliver mail to every address in the country. And the government was going to be the one to set prices. So you want himto operated business, but you're telling him what services they have to provide in. You're telling them how much they can charge for a while. This new business version of the Post office actually worked year after year. Mail volume just kept increasing meant so did revenue. But then in the early two thousand's email, it was cheaper, faster. Like anything. First class mail delivery peaked in 2001 at 103 Billion letters just went downhill from there. So in 2007 Congress, said the Postal Service could increase some of its prices. But at the last minute it slipped in another requirement, said the Postal Service would have to pre pay its workers retirement health benefits. So when the final bill came out, there were many of us who were very surprised. What is thiss payment? We have to make That's Ruth Gold Weigh, who at the time was a commissioner at the Postal Regulatory Commission. No other government agency and almost no other business puts money away for future health care. Retiring benefits claims, But now The Postal Service did it had 10 years to put together this giant pool of money to cover millions of current and former workers. $5 billion a year. Which for an organization that was already struggling to turn a profit was devastating in 2011. It just stopped paying couldn't afford to anymore today. The post office owes a lot of money, not just to prefund. It's retirement health care benefits. It also owes tens of billions of dollars for pensions and worker's compensation. In 2019, that liability totaled $161 billion. That's David Trimble again from the Government Accountability Office. $161 billion is more than twice the money the post office brought in last year. The current business model is no longer feasible. It's financially not sustainable and its missions at risk unless there's significant reforms made. Right now. The Postal Service is kind of a business, except it has so little control over how it makes money. War cuts costs and it's kind of part of the federal government. But except for overseas voting and mail services for the blind Congress doesn't pay for anything. The Postal Service did get a $10 billion loan in the cares act, but it has to pay it back. Trimble says in order to fix the fundamental contradictions at the post office, it's up to Congress to decide is the post Office of business or is it a public service? Keith RUMOR. "Welcome to the deadwood the beautiful black hills deadwood in many ways is the most vibrant part of the black hills community and the black hills community is made up of many talents that we have deadwood here lead just up the road Sturgis on the edge spearfish to the north Rapid City pretty much on the central edge of the black hills to the east all these towns fit together in my mind as one community communities need a sense of place that they can all identify and we all identify with the black hills tell us it's our touchstone we with your worth from Rapid City deadwood or lead you all know about what goes on the black hills so it's a great place that we all share this shared sense of community now each town with a little bit different in its origin deadwood by far was more ruckus an exciting time to begin with you know this were gold was discovered in late eighteen seventy five eighteen seventy six other prospectors flooded in and this is the great gold rush calamity Jane came while Bill Hickock came and well bill was dead six weeks later on August second eighteen seventy six and brought up here and bear just very down the hill there but that his body was moved to write over here so while bills right behind us calamity Jane was here at the start of the gold rush but she left came back left came back died in nineteen oh three a small town called Terry just over the hill the people of deadwood never wanting to mystic commercial opportunity one up there grab the body brought back and planner next the Wild Bill Chris calamity Jane storyteller would always say that Hearn while bill were lovers perhaps more than friends undoubtedly well bill newer but probably didn't really associate with her nevertheless the buried together right on the hill behind us about Mariah cemetery so deadwood is a big tourist town today and as it was the origin with the gold rush part of that tourism is based on the gold rush part of is it really on this cemetery not Mariah were Wild Bill and calamity Jane lie now dead wood from the start of the gold rush eighteen seventy six was founded April eighteen seventy six officially up until the mid eighteen eighties was the largest community the black hills the first sheriff was self Polack and I did a lot of study on sept blocked the for sheriff in part because he was the first sheriff I want to connect that violence and when he was sheriff there was well it was only sure for nine and a half months when South Dakota or should be called a territory took control of the black hills separating seventy seven when Congress removed the black hills the great Sioux reservation because we were you know the the gold rush was illegal it was an invasion of Sioux reservation block came in August eighteen seventy six initially in violation of the fort Laramie treaty of eighteen sixty eight but by February eighteen seventy seven Congress removed the black hills from the Sioux reservation and then probably blocks appointed for sure so for nine and a half months he sheriff and he's the first guy trying to impose law and order well as I said he had about one violent death a month under his watch and and what is the deal with his amongst those he had to deal with the first stage coach robbery Johnny slaughter is blown off the coach out here and that's that the the run for about a lot of stagecoach robberies all he got was saloon violence and there were people getting shot in saloons and and not a lot and well built kit was killed before block arrived I dealt with the claim jumpers and that would seem to be his when he was here in eighteen seventy seven there are more people then claims to be claimed and so became competition and gunfire but bullock was I was calling a reactive share he wasn't going out trying to solve problems before they existed when he heard gunfire he went running after and so he he really solve any crimes he didn't stop I don't think much violence except by being a share an interesting character being sure for nine and a half months distressed Polack he came here from Montana because he thought he was Mister law and order he thought he'd hold political office but people don't like him you can never win elections they did like it probably because he was the first guy to try to establish law and order his vision of being a lawman faded away with his defeat and became what you would on an environment like this not a newer it in what a pan gold too much he wanted wealth but he got he was in a business with his partner sol star in Iran a hardware store but he had lots of other ambitions who I want to get on that capitalist run and speculated what's out there so he does partner star opened a ranch out north of the black hills out were bill through shoes today call the S. in the ranch for the SMB off the first Star ball lock he also got into the mining business eventually eighteen eighty five there were some silver mines developing north west of the black hills and he got all bored with it called the iron hill mine he became president and they produce silver bars they brought the silver to deadwood all my gosh this big silver fine well luckily our dollar ICJ unlikely mistaken there there wasn't much silver there and my one broke and block lost everything you put into it even though we tried you know tried innovative processes you cannot get more silver David wolf block black hills long eventually what really kind and he eventually build a hotel downtown deadwood get data block hotel was hardware store was I didn't want to run a hotel he built the hotel and somebody else ran a put the still with his hotel the Spanish American war came along and as we know from three to Roosevelt experience Congress authorized the creation of three Calvary units Walter Calver units a thousand in each Roosevelt and Leonard wood organized a company a the first year the Attorney General South Dakota guy named Melvin Grigsby was authorized to coordinate the third unit unit see and he recruited a thousand at any point Seth blocked the captain and recruit men for his volunteer cover unit here in the black hills and surrounding region which self Polack did he loves he loves being capped at a as he said in his to his son in law I was cut out to do this in fact his son in law wrote in his diary that is the dart the somewhat kept a diary said that I'm sure block did not pass the physical is fifty one of the time and I'm sure the congressional delegation fix that so you could get it but that's another story but anyway he recruits his men and they go trading at in fort Meade then they get shipped to camp Thomaston Georgia Chickamauga Georgia and in there they train and there they state why theater Roosevelt was capturing San Juan and cattle hill in Cuba the South Dakota because they were called the groupies cowboys stayed in Georgia well the war ended and they were disappointed they were dismayed and they sauntered back to the black hills disappointed but with tales of glory well after the war Roosevelt love to get together with his rough riders in any other veteran that was part of his volunteer units from then on blocks a big Republican goes to Republican conventions they stabbed a close relationship we have block this true man at the front here you know he spent years in Montana was a pioneer in deadwood you ran ranches mines and here's Roosevelt this one of the rancher one of the cowboy you know he's earned the New York a patrician place cowboy for a few years before he loses everything in his ranch and and then block becomes to symbolize the him this many of the west the western spirit that the great things in this country came from the western frontier spirit so he's kind of this man that keeps Roosevelt grounded in this sentiment he has for the western spirit so they come close because of that in nineteen hundred when McKinley and Roosevelt running for the office rose will take a train ride across South Dakota and block joins him on the train for a week and a you know rose like to have old Roughriders with them to you no charge the sound the charge and all that the block road with them and help in campaign and those of of a somewhat famous story they stopped in Butte Montana and new Montana was William Jennings Bryan town of silver rights and all that and so there would there be a hostile crowd and block was pretty worried that when teddy Roosevelt took the stage that he get a very nasty reaction but indeed Rosal took the stage and the crowd was quiet respectful and Roosevelt later said that he thought his oratorical skills had the crowd mesmerized were in fact blocking cruiser spread the word that anybody raise the west southward against Rosa he shoot him and he sat back and stayed with his gums exposed keeping the crowd choir Roosevelt spoke now every says that story's true why not Roosevelt arranges for McKinley to appoint block for supervisor and this is the black hills National Forest one block became for supervisor he got the black hills as an independent forced and for for half years he'd run the forest and and block with the man that Roosevelt wanted so we wrote a letter so you're the man that the character of Amanda to run not forced and blocked apply his western ways as he is set immediately I don't want a lot of eastern dudes out here trying to be my Rangers anyone back east and lobbied so I'm gonna put my all men mendicant right horses that can camp under the open stars and he got that authority he had about twelve Rangers and restorative any any picked him and he got him out here and he was very much in mind with Gifford Pinchot affect your potential came to admire it and we're calling back to Washington to speak at a believe that it was a balance out here you need to force to keep the water viable and the fourth in the water would keep the industry's viable to very very important figure at the time David wolf block black hills long well he's forced to revise our four and a half years and then when Roosevelt president he points in US marshal and for six years and US marshal is quite get back there in years at this time but and the papers congratulate him and Rosa and with boxes that's the promise more of my life being US marshal but as the papers point out also this is the job that block retire to he did work as hard as probably some US marshals death he did however go to Washington a lot in nineteen oh nine Roosevelt had a retirement party when he left the presidency and he's one of the thirty one invited guests to go to the White House a part of the tennis cabinet many of them are our cabinet members and other people but blocks a month this handful of people from the west that Roosevelt wanna make sure were there it felt a block to give.
